Johnny Bos Tribute Tuesday at Ring 8 meeting in New York

Ring 8 will pay tribute to the late, great matchmaker Johnny Bos tomorrow night (Tuesday, May 21 starting at 7:00 p.m. ET) at historic Waterfront Crabhouse, in Long Island City, New York.

Many of Bos’ friends, family and associates have been invited to attend tomorrow;s Ring 8 monthly meeting in an effort to raise funds to help defray the costs of Bos’ funeral. One-hundred percent of all proceeds raised tomorrow from new Ring 8 membership fees ($30.00 per year entitles each member to a buffet dinner at Ring 8 monthly meetings), as well as any group or individual donations, will go directly towards Bos’ funeral expenses.

The eccentric Bos – known as “The Wizard of Bos” – helped develop the careers of countless boxers over the years, particularly in New York, as a matchmaker and advisor. Some of “Bos’ boxers” include Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield. Pernell Whitaker, Gerry Cooney, Paulie Malignaggi, Joey Gamache, Yuri Foreman, Jameel McCline and Tracy Harris Patterson.

“We just became aware of this situation (funeral expense needs) over the weekend and Ring 8 wanted to help,” Ring 8 president Bob Duffy said. “All monies raised will go directly to Johnny’s family towards his funeral expenses. Ring 8 member and Johnny’s close friend, Don Majeski, was the driving force in this effort.

“Anybody from New York who has been involved in boxing for the past 25 years or more, if asked to identify one person in New York boxing, would say Johnny Bos. He was a boxing icon who everybody knew and respected. He was a tough guy to make matches with, though, because he always knew what he was doing. Johnny Bos was a great guy and Ring 8 is privileged to pay tribute to him.”

ABOUT RING 8: Formed in 1954 by an ex-prizefighter, Jack Grebelsky, Ring 8 became the eighth subsidiary of what was then known as the National Veteran Boxers Association – hence, RING 8 – and today the organization’s motto still remains: Boxers Helping Boxers.

RING 8 is fully committed to supporting less fortunate people in the boxing community who may require assistance in terms of paying rent, medical expenses, or whatever justifiable need.

Confusing the Enemy - The Cus D'Amato Story

It is often said that he who controls the heavyweight title controls boxing. For several years during the late 50's and early 60's legendary boxing trainer and manager Cus D'Amato held a grasp on the division as Floyd Patterson became a contender and, eventually, the youngest boxer ever to win the title. He was also the first to reclaim the title, having lost it briefly to Ingemar Johansson.

Patterson was only D'Amato's first titleholder. In the 1960's, he helped Jose Torres claim the light heavyweight championship and, in his early 70's, he discovered 12-year old Mike Tyson who was introduced to him by Bobby Stewart, a social worker at a school for troubled boys. D'Amato took Tyson in and taught him everything he knew about laying claim to the championship. Tyson won it in 1986, a year after Cus D'Amato died of complications related to pneumonia.

This biographical novel explores the enigmatic life of Cus D'Amato with all the accuracy possible, given the fact that everybody you talk to has a different version of the facts and a different spin on the truth. Many people loved and respected Cus. Others thought he was crazy. To this day, hundreds of boxing fans think he is one of the greatest trainer/managers who ever lived. Just as many think he so carefully matched his fighters, that they ascended to the title more on strategic selection of opponents, than on ring prowess. He is often characterized as a knight in shining armor on a quest to clean-up the sport of prizefighting. Several others suggest he was the biggest gangster of them all. Regardless, of your position, if you love boxing, you will not be able to put this book down.

Along the way he was an advisor and strategist for Muhammad Ali. D'Amato worked feverishly, during the period Ali was unable to obtain a license to fight, to put together the match with Joe Frazier. Cus also worked in an advisory capacity with Wilfred Benitez, Gerry Cooney, the Hilton Brothers, and Wilt Chamberlain.

Cus had close friends in high places - Roy Cohn, Howard Cosell, and "Fat Tony" Salerno. He was revered by the members of the Lion's Gate writer's circle - Norman Mailer, Pete Hamill, Budd Schulberg, and George Plimpton. He was arrested, had his license suspended, chased by the tax authorities, and adjudicated bankrupt. And his life was threatened on more than one occasion by the likes of Rocky Graziano, Sonny Liston, and various associates of the Five Families of New York.

The authors have interviewed virtually everyone in the boxing world willing to discuss Cus D'Amato. Many don't want to be quoted. Others only want to rehash the same information that has circulated on the grapevine for years. Very few wanted to take a stand. Weiss and Stover have worked tirelessly to get to the essence of this man who dedicated his life to covering his tracks. This book raises as many questions as it answers about the life of Cus D'Amato, but in doing so tells a captivating story about one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the heavyweight title.

Mike Tyson on his criminal past, new stage show, and going vegan

Mike Tyson on his criminal past, new stage show, and going vegan

“I love Mike Tyson because he did it his way.” –Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Today, Mike Tyson finds happiness in simplicity. During our visit to his home in suburban Las Vegas, the former heavyweight champion was a bit reserved until he got the opportunity to show off his beloved pigeon coop.
Tyson explains the nuances and habits of his pigeons just like an accomplished trainer would break down the fundamentals of boxing. Once Tyson allowed his pigeons to fly, he pointed out how the tumbler pigeons would roll over backward during flight. Some pigeons would do so at speeds so fast that they would often kill themselves or come close to death because they didn’t have time to land correctly.
In a sense, the tumbler pigeons mirror Tyson’s life during his younger days. Living fast and reckless only to narrowly escape death or destruction.
Growing up poor in Brooklyn, N.Y., during the 1980s could have that type of effect. Tyson became another soul consumed by the tragedies created by poverty.
“All of my friends were animals,” Tyson revealed while reminiscing about his turbulent childhood.
“We would rob guys. I grew up in a dysfunctional situation where drugs and violence were normal. I would’ve been a drug dealer. When I was starting my pro career and only making like $500 per fight, I used to always hook my boys up with money for crack to sell. But my whole life changed when they killed my friend over a drug deal gone bad. From then on, I never went back to hustling and I stayed focused on boxing.”

Tyson’s gift for obliterating opponents in the boxing ring rescued him from the poverty and criminal activity that gripped most of his peers. Under the guidance of legendary trainer Cus D’Amato (who died in 1985), Tyson became the youngest heavyweight boxing champ in history at the age of 20.
Indeed, Tyson found a way to escape poverty, but he couldn’t escape the allure that comes with money and fame. He slept with countless numbers of women, purchased dozens of exotic cars, threw wild parties, and delved into drug use.
One prison stint, a controversial biting of Evander Holyfield’s ear and two divorces later, Tyson lost nearly $400 million of the money he earned throughout his career.
“When I was younger, all I thought about was fame, fortune, girls, sex and drugs,” Tyson says. “When my career was over, I left a massive wreckage in my past. I realized I won a lot of superficial victories such as sex and money. I’m now trying to make amends. I love moral victories more. And that’s real love when you care more about morals than anything else.”

By the late 2000s, Tyson found himself attempting to walk the straight and narrow for the first time in his life. However, the tragic death of his 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, in 2009 caused Tyson to briefly relapse. She was killed in the family home after playing with a faulty treadmill.
“Where I come from, people aren’t happy, so they get hooked on drugs,” Tyson says. “People get drunk, snort cocaine, smoke marijuana and use syringes because they can’t stop [the] pain. They’re trying to kill pain. Drug use won’t stop until someone can stop the hurt. We’re in pain out here.”
Tyson walked away from drugs and alcohol and has been sober for three years. He’s a devout Muslim and has adopted a strict vegan diet for the past 12 months. The diet allowed Tyson to flush many of the impurities out of his system and he eventually lost 100 pounds.
Tyson now looks back on his past hardships and realizes that they made him stronger and led him to approach life differently.
“I’m glad I went through those experiences because I survived them, and look at where I’m at now,” he says. “Nothing’s perfect in life and I love who I am and who I’m becoming. I’m establishing a relationship with my wife and staying committed. I’m really enjoying this stage of my life.”
This stage of Tyson’s life actually has him on stage. Nearly two years ago, Tyson sat down with his wife, Kiki Tyson, and the two found an interesting way for him to tell his story to the masses. They came up with the one-man stage show, Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth.
The nearly two-hour show, directed by Spike Lee, features an unfiltered Tyson divulging stories on fi ghting Don King; time in prison; his mother’s drinking issues; his sexual conquests and how he once caught Brad Pitt making out with his ex-wife, Robin Givens.
“There’s not much of a difference in preparing for boxing and preparing for the stage,” he says. “Everything must be precise. You just have to possess a great deal of confidence and understanding of where to go and how to maintain energy.”

SEASON TWO OF JIM ROME ON SHOWTIME RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH ICE CUBE, FLOYD MAYWEATHER AND RONDA ROUSEY Season 2 Premieres Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®

JIM ROME ON SHOWTIME returns for its second season tomorrow, Wednesday, in front of a studio audience with guests Ice Cube, Floyd "Money" Mayweather, Ronda Rousey, Dhani Jones and Dr. Harry Edwards.  The episode premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®
Media mogul, actor and rapper Ice Cube sits down with Rome for a one-on-one interview to give  his thoughts on current sports and entertainment topics including the L.A. Lakers, the Oakland Raiders, and his new album.
Coming together in a free forum discussion, the first female UFC champion Ronda Rousey, noted sports sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, and former NFL star Dhani Jones join Rometo debate cheating, sex and religion, and how all three play such a large role in today's sporting world.
Plus, undefeated, eight-time world champion boxer Floyd "Money" Mayweather joins the program via satellite to tackle Rome's 10 Questions segment.  Mayweather recently announced a unique, groundbreaking revenue-sharing arrangement with Showtime Networks Inc. and its parent company, CBS Corporation. He returns to the ring May 4 to face Robert Guerrero in "MAY DAY: Mayweather vs. Guerrero" produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV®.
When Rome asks Mayweather what the one thing is that he won't mess with, Mayweather responds, "A married woman."  To which Rome replies, "Good answer. Good policy."
JIM ROME ON SHOWTIME, in its second season on SHOWTIME, airs Wednesdays with multiple replays each week on SHOWTIME and SHOWTIME EXTREME® and availability on SHOWTIME ON DEMAND.
Following are excerpts from this week's episode:
JIM ROME: Do you trust Dwight Howard at this point?
ICE CUBE: No. Not yet. Not till he re-signs. That's what it's all about. How could we when he could just get up and leave on a whim. Until he makes the commitment to the Lakers, how can I make the commitment to him? I love Dwight. I want to see him a Laker. I think he can get up there on the wall and be champion for the Lakers. So it's on him. Him not being committed has to affect his play. It has to. What's going to determine it for me is if he remains long-term with the Lakers. And he wears the Laker jacket, you know what I mean. It seems like right now he's a visitor.
ROME: Between Kobe, LeBron and Michael Jordan, who do you got as the best ever and why?
ICE CUBE: Kobe's never been cut. I don't think LeBron's got the mental fortitude like Kobe Bryant has. I think it's just what he had to go through in Italy. I just think he's cut from a different cloth. No disrespect to Michael Jordan and years ago you would never hear me say this.  I just think Kobe had the benefit of looking at Michael in a way. I think he's kept his body in more condition than anyone has ever seen and he's doing things 17 years later that are just amazing. He never walked away from the game and came back. For some reason I just think Kobe is the true definition of a baller, with nothing else on his mind.
ROME: What's the difference between someone like Kobe Bryant and Ray Lewis, who have bounced back from adversity, and Tiger Woods? Why hasn't he bounced back? What's the difference between him and all the other guys that have come back?
RONDA ROUSEY: I think Mike Tyson said it best when he said a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter. I think you need to enjoy what you're doing and compartmentalize what you are doing with your professional life. Whenever I see Tiger Woods play golf, he looks pretty miserable. If he could just enjoy what he's doing and have fun out there and return to where he was at the beginning then I think he can.
Top highlight from Rome's Quick Hits:
ROME: Used to be the question wasn't whether or not (Tiger) Woods would run down Jack, but rather how badly he'd smash his mark. But it says here he won't get there. And it won't be because of his knee, Achilles, driver, putter or rebuilt swing. It'll be because of sex. He had too much of that and not nearly enough heart.
Rome's Sincerely Yours takes on the Bracket Guy in your office pool:
ROME: This year, you're even more insufferable now that you've gone online with all your garbage. Now, you're the jerk who drops all his 12-5 upsets into his Twitter timeline. Bad enough you're going to lose all nine pools you entered.  You're also going to lose all 12 of your followers because they'd all rather get catfished than get subjected to one more of you sleeper picks with a 'please retweet' chaser. Tell you what; this year, instead of laying out your Elite 8, why don't you go get an elite date. And don't talk about your NCAA picks until someone asks you about them, because no one will. Bracket Guy, you are a 16-seed in this tournament we call life. A guaranteed loser every single year.

BERNARD “THE EXECUTIONER” HOPKINS PHILADELPHIA MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES‏

“Tavoris Cloud is an aggressive young fighter.  I heard him at the press conference in New York City.  He described himself as the Mike Tyson of this era.

“Ive been on a path that I keep my body on the right track and duck more punches than I take.  I can fight until I’m 50 years old.

“The less you get hit, the more you can speak and count your money.

“I am going to be glad and excited to be at Barclays Center.  It is the new Mecca of Boxing in New York.  It used to be the hood.  Now it’s known as ‘Hello Brooklyn.’

“I get a chance to leave my legacy in Brooklyn.  Not only am I honored, but I ‘ve earned that.

“I’m past the stage of breaking records.  It’s my legacy that I want to protect.  It’s important to me that in my last couple of fights I didn’t put myself on the line by doing one third of the work that I’ve put in all of these years.  I refuse to surrender to that kind of mentality.

“Anyone that can beat me, any one that can embarrass me, will become an instant star.

“I believe that Cloud’s aggressiveness will make this an action packed fight because he’s thinking of himself as number one because he has the belt.  He needs to come in and make adjustments to my style.  If he can’t make adjustments, you will see a repeat of the Kelly Pavlik fight.

“I’m different.  I’ve set records and broken records.  I have to concentrate not only on what I did yesterday, but what I’m going to do tomorrow.

“People ask me, ‘What does it feel like to be 48?’  I say that I don’t know because if you ask most people in their late forties or even late thirties how they feel, they might say they’re ready to die because they aren’t healthy and don’t have longevity like me.  You can’t put me in the same category as a regular guy.

“I don’t expect Cloud to dance like Ali.  I don’t expect him to do anything to buy time.  I expect him to come forward.  That’s what I would do if I was 30 fighting someone who is almost 50.

“I have to stay busy and I’ll win every round.  The cat is out of the bag because I’m not coming to get beaten up.

“There is no one saying that I am going to get blown out on March 9 when I step into that ring.  There is no one saying that I’m going to lose the fight.  They are saying that Tavoris Cloud’s style is my forte.  Cloud comes forward and throws bombs and anyone I’ve fought that comes forward, I’ve beaten.  The only thing they are saying is that ‘He is 48.’

“Maybe I’ll go down a pound or two before I leave this sport, or maybe I will help my partners at Golden Boy and help them find new talent as a promoter or maybe I will find a little fat stomach that makes me look like I am retired.

“There’s a lot working against me, but there is also a lot working for me.  I have the conditioning to adjust to the times.  The game didn’t change, but I’m ready to face someone that is young enough to be my son and in some cases, my grandson.

“I am leading the 40-and-up club.  There are a lot of 40-year-olds rooting for me because they have interns looking over their shoulders trying to take their jobs.

“I am living out what we talked about 10 or 15 years ago.  I knew I was going to be here.  We talked about this moment.  I knew I could do this.  I know I can still win or compete on this level.

“I am so competitive; I know I have the body and skills to still do this.

“I love this game and sometimes love can hurt.”

Tune into “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch Terry Moran’s full interview.

Former boxing heavyweight champ Mike Tyson said his role in “The Hangover,” the hit 2009 film about three groomsmen and their drunken Vegas debauchery, actually helped him become sober and get his life back on track.
Tyson, who has had three stints in rehab for substance abuse, said he was still in a “dark place” when the movie was filming. But after it came out, he said one day he was swarmed by a tour group full of kids, who hugged him and asked him all sorts of questions about his “Hangover” performance, in which he played himself as the owner of a stolen white Bengal tiger.
“That changed everything for me, which I’m so appreciative,” Tyson, 46, said. “That was just some good stuff.”
In a brutally honest interview with “Nightline” anchor Terry Moran, Tyson opened up about his turbulent past, dealing with substance abuse and moving forward. The champ said he has been sober for over three years now, but still grapples with his demons every day.
“I’m just constantly working on turning. It doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. “I may have a good few years in me but it’s still not out of me. You still have to work consistently. Every moment of the day you have to work because your demons always — that’s who you are.”
Tune into “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch Terry Moran’s full interview.
After years of reigning supreme in the boxing ring, Tyson’s career has been marked by struggle and heartache. Tyson served a three-year sentence in the ’90s for a rape conviction, a crime he still denies he committed.
“I didn’t do that,” Tyson said. “I’m never going to say I did something I didn’t do… I’m just so happy that it’s over.”
The champ’s boxing career then suffered another major blow in 1997 when he bit off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a fight. He has been married three times, and has sought treatment for his issues with drugs and alcohol abuse.
“Being in rehab, that kicks you’re a–,” he said. “If you really trying to do this thing and you have your demons still banging on you and you want to do the right thing, this is kicking you’re a–, it’s kicking you’re a–, I don’t care how tough you are… it’s killing you but you have to do it.”
Then in 2009, Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter Exodus Tyson died in a treadmill accident at her home in Phoenix, a devastating loss that still pains the champ today.
“I’m traumatized,” he said. “But I know if I dwell on it, I’ll be a psychopath.”
Tyson now has two young children with his third wife Lakiha Spicer. He is on a vegan diet and said he is “constantly working” on turning over a new leaf.
From the boxing ring to center stage, Tyson is about to embark on a new adventure on Broadway — a one-man show about his life called, “Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth,” directed by Spike Lee.  The show will run six times between July 31 and Aug. 5.
“I like to describe it as me just being naked onstage, not physically naked, but just naked spiritually and emotionally onstage,” Tyson said.
But despite all the good that has come to him in recent years, the champ said he believes he could still fall off the wagon.
“I have to always believe it can happen to prevent it from even going in that direction,” he said. “I’m so weak… [but] I see my faults, I know my flaws, I know my faults, and I’m dealing with those issues in my life to improve my life.”
Tune into “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch Terry Moran’s full interview.

Mike Tyson in Mexico, By Gabriel F. Cordero

Mike Tyson in Mexico

By Gabriel F. Cordero

No Holds Barred: Mike Tyson, Keisha Morrisey

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the June 18 news conference in New York featuring former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, director Spike Lee, and producer James L. Nederlander to announce the opening of the show called "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth". This one-man, autobiographical show, featuring Mike Tyson and also marking the Broadway directorial debut for Lee, will run for a limited engagement from July 31 to August 5 at the Longacre Theater in Manhattan's Theater District. At the news conference, the media present participated in an extended question-and-answer session with the speakers.

After the news conference, we spoke with our correspondent Keisha Morrisey, who has known Mike Tyson for over 25 years. We discussed whether or not this show, which premiered in Las Vegas in March but may be altered for Broadway, will actually provide the undisputed truth about the controversial life and career of Mike Tyson both inside and outside the ring.
