“Relentless” Pride of PR, MIGUEL COTTO defending his WBA super welterweight title against 2-division world champion RICARDO “El Matador” MAYORGA

“Relentless” features the Pride of Puerto Rico, MIGUEL COTTO defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight title against two-division world champion RICARDO “El Matador” MAYORGA, on Saturday, March 12, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev. Cotto vs. Mayorga will be produced and distributed LIVE on SHOWTIME PPV®, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

MIGUEL COTTO: “Welcome to the first press conference where Ricardo Mayorga talks. I am a professional fighter and I know what my job is. My job is to fight in the ring and make good fights because nobody wins a fight with their mouth.

“Yesterday I was with him and he was playful and serene but today I guess he gets excited with all the lights and cameras on. When we get to the fight there will be lots of cameras on there also, but you will have to fight to back up your words.

“I didn't interrupt you so don't interrupt me – the door is over there if you want to leave. With those little pants I beat Shane Mosley. Do you remember him? Shane Mosley?

RICARDO MAYORGA:
“I made a promise to Don that I will never fail him. Don is the best promoter in the world and Bob is a close second. I will prove to everyone on March 12 that I am the man and you are the woman.

“That belt you are holding, polish it up for me because I will be taking it on March 12. I will make a promise here today that I will knock him out in four rounds.

“I have been watching all of your fights for the past two months, you are punch drunk – you can't take a punch anymore and I will retire him. You and your trainer will fail.

“Like Margarito after the Pacquiao fight, you will be thinking about retiring when I am done with you. I will make you think twice about getting in the ring again. Don't let your mom or your family suffer anymore by watching you get in the ring. I will knock him out and prove to the people in Nicaragua and here that I am better than you in that ring.

“This is the first time I will fight someone that is as small as a kid. I think my pants are taller than you.

“Christy, it is an honor to be fighting on the same card as you the way you have always stood up for women's rights. I don't even have tapes of all of my fights but I have all of yours.

“Buy the pay-per-view so you can watch the retirement party for Miguel. Your hands are like a woman's. Look at my hands – they are man's hands. You came to Nicaragua and talked smack and told everyone I was a nobody. On March 12, all the Puerto Ricans are going to be wearing black for your wake. You will pay for what you said.

No Holds Barred: Keisha Morrisey and Bob Carson Critique Strikeforce
and HBO Boxing, and Analyze Shine Fights Cancellation

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman had a late
night discussion with two of our correspondents, Keisha Morrisey
(http://www.bloodlineboxing.blogspot.com) and Bob Carson (http://
carsonscorner.podomatic.com), about the fight festivities from
Saturday night, May 15. Right after these shows concluded, we spoke
about the Strikeforce card from St. Louis shown on Showtime, the HBO
boxing card from New York headlined by the Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi
fight, and the cancellation of the Shine Fights mixed martial arts
card which was supposed to feature former champion boxer Ricardo
Mayorga against mixed martial arts veteran Din Thomas.

Who is chiefly to blame for the cancellation of the Shine Fights card
following an injunction granted to Don King against this card because
of a claim that his company has exclusive rights to promote the fights
of Mayorga? Which card was better between the Strikeforce-Showtime
card and the HBO boxing card? Will Strikeforce heavyweight champion
Alistair Overeem, who stopped Brett Rogers in the first round of their
fight Saturday, ever fight top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko? Should
fighters in mixed martial arts and boxing insist on drug testing based
on the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency? What do we think of
the various athletic commissions, which use different tests if any at
all? Are fighters with steroid-laden bodies effective or even sexy?
What is next for Strikeforce? How impressive was Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
great Roger Gracie, who submitted Kevin Randleman in the second round
of their fight with a rear naked choke, in his Strikeforce and
American debut? Why is the promotion of boxing to the public so awful?

These and other key questions are answered in our discussion, which is
almost like hanging out after the fights and chatting with our trio of
combat sports aficionados.

MARTINEZ DEFENDS INTERIM WBC 154 LBS. TITLE VERSUS CINTRON FEB. 14 ON HBO

***Interim WBC Jr. Middleweight Titlist Sergio Martinez Takes on Kermit Cintron as Part of HBO “BAD” Tripleheader, Feb. 14, at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL***

New York– DiBella Entertainment serves up a Valentine’s Day treat with the addition of a potentially explosive 154 pound title fight between interim WBC champion Sergio Martinez and former IBF welterweight kingpin Kermit Cintron, to HBO’s Boxing After Dark on Saturday, February 14, at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

The scheduled 12-rounder will be the first bout of 2009 for both fighters. Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KOs) was supposed to defend his interim belt against undefeated Joe Greene on the recent DBE-promoted Berto-Collazo welterweight championship card in Biloxi, MS, but illness forced WBO # 4 rated Greene to withdraw. “Maravilla” Martinez was then briefly scheduled fight Daniel Santos before the WBA junior middleweight champion changed his mind…claiming lack of proper preparation time. Cintron (30-2, 27 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over former IBF 140 lbs. champion Lovemore N'dou on the Taylor-Lacy DBE show, seen on HBO this past November 15, in Nashville, TN. “El Asesino” Cintron is currently rated the # 2 welterweight in the world by the IBF.

Sergio Martinez has been anxious for the opportunity to build on his spectacular knockout win over Alex Bunema on HBO this past October, while Kermit Cintron is riding high again following his recent victory over N’dou. It says a lot about the character of two great professional fighters when Sergio and Kermit are willing to put it all on the line against each other. Both guys want to be the best and neither one will pass up an opportunity to prove it!” said DBE president Lou DiBella.

Madrid, Spain’s Martinez, by way of Buenos Aires, is 33-year-old southpaw and former IBO 154 pound titlist, who put the American boxing audience on notice in October, as “Maravilla” produced a dazzling TKO victory over then WBA # 1 rated contender Alex Bunema to earn the interim WBC 154 pound title.

One of boxing’s hardest punchers, former welterweight champion Cintron won the vacant IBF title in October 2006 with an impressive display of power punching – halting Mark Suarez in six one-sided rounds. Born in Carolinas, Puerto Rico, Cintron, 29, now fights out of Reading, PA.

Martinez vs. Cintron is part of an HBO tripleheader also featuring unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell defending against Ali Funeka and Alfredo Angulo vs. Ricardo Mayorga in a WBC 154 lbs. eliminator.

Tickets information for the Feb. 14 boxing tripleheader will be announced shortly. The BankAtlantic Center is the home arena for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League.

See you at the Fights.
