Maidana vs. Lopez & Angulo vs. Lara Press Conference Quotes For June 8 Fights At The Home Depot Center, Live On Showtime‏

Maidana vs. Lopez, a 12-round fight for Maidana's WBA Intercontinental Championship will take place on Saturday, June 8 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, sponsored by Corona and AT&T and will be televised live on SHOWTIME  CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING beginning at 10p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.  Also featured will be a 12-round super welterweight showdown between all-action warrior Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo and number one rated WBC super welterweight contender Erislandy Lara.SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is available in Spanish on secondary audio programming (SAP).Maidana vs. Lopez is presented in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions.Preliminary fights will air on SHOWTIME Extreme at 8 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

MARCOS MAIDANA
"I know Josesito is a great fighter. I know he likes to stand and trade and fight. That's what I do and that's why it's going to be such an exciting fight.
"My plan is to go toe-to-toe. I don't know what Josesito is going to do, but that's what I plan to do. Pressure is the key to the fight.
"I'm feeling great. I've been in Oxnard, California for over a month already. I love training there. The weather is great and it's where my coach (Robert Garcia) is. It's going to be a great fight and I'm going to defend the honor of Argentina.
"The 147-pound division is where I feel best. I didn't feel that way at 140. Now I'm free and I can eat more. My body is different and you can see the definition."
JOSESITO LOPEZ
"When you're fighting a heavy puncher like Maidana, you have to be smart. The move up to 154 pounds helped me now that I'm back at 147. Now I feel I'm a true welterweight. I feel great in the gym; stronger and faster.
"I'm so excited about this fight and I'm the one receiving the punches. I can only imagine how excited the fans are. Years ago before I was at this level I thought, 'Man, this would be an exciting fight. I would love to get in there and bang with him.' Now we're here. It's a hell of a match-up. It could be the fight of the year.
"This is a fight I have to win. It's a fight that keeps me on the map. This is where I want to be and I'm working my ass off
"He's a strong puncher and I like to think I have a little punch myself. In the ring I just have to be smart whether it's defense on the inside or boxing on the outside. I have to be the smarter fighter and whatever works that's what I'm going to have to do
"We have to be smart and shoot our jab. We have to pick our spots and not let him. He's an inside fighter and he likes to bang. Well, I like to bang too. I've got to be in a position where I want to be, not where he wants me to be."
ALFREDO "EL PERRO" ANGULO
"This is my third fight after my time off and conditioning-wise I'm feeling like my old self, feeling like I used to feel. There's no doubt I'll be in better condition than I was for my last two fights. There was just too much time off. Now, I'm in a rhythm
"It's going to be a very good fight, the bull versus the matador. I have a lot of respect for Lara. He's a really good fighter and he wants to show he's the best, but he's going to have to come out and fight.
"He may think he's just going to box, but he's going to fight."
ERISLANDY LARA
"There's always a lot at stake when I fight, so I know I can't look ahead or take Angulo for granted. He is my total focus now. After I win on June 8; I can start thinking about a world title shot again.
"Angulo is a good fighter. I give him a lot of credit. He always comes to fight. I've worked very hard and am preparing for the best Angulo possible.
"The fact that I'm favored to win means nothing. Once the bell rings, it doesn't matter what the odds are. It's what you do in the ring that counts.
"Style-wise this is a perfect fight for me because Angulo likes to come forward. It's the classic boxer versus the puncher. I expect to put on a boxing clinic, so you can expect a smart fight from me.
"Obviously, the most important thing is for me to win, but I want to put on a great show for all the fans."
OSCAR DE LA HOYA
"We should have called this 'High Stakes' because you have the welterweight division where you have Floyd Mayweather. The winner between Marcos Maidana and Josesito Lopez automatically puts himself in line and at the front door knocking to fight the very best.
"This is how important this event is. This is high stakes here for everyone on this card. Saturday, June 8 will be explosive, that's for sure.
"What's most exciting for Alfredo Angulo's team is that he's just now putting everything together and really learning the craft of boxing under Virgil Hunter. It's going to be very exciting to see him fight such an incredible fighter like Erislandy Lara
"Stephen Espinoza (Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME SPORTS) has now taken SHOWTIME to a whole new level. This is the home of boxing and it will continue to be the home of boxing for many years to come."
KEN THOMPSON, Josesito's Lopez' Co-Promoter
"Here we go again...one more time in L.A. and in every city thanks to SHOWTIME. We have the best fighter in the world in Josesito Lopez, the 'Riverside Rocky.'
"When Josesito and Marcos Maidana enter the ring for the main event on June 8, no judges will be needed. This fight will end with one great fighter laying in the middle of the ring, while the other great fighter will be standing and getting his hand raised in victory and that fighter is the 'Riverside Rocky,' Josesito Lopez.''
LUIS DECUBAS JR., Erislandy Lara's Manager
"This is going to be a great fight. We're happy to be on such a great card. Erislandy is ready. He knows he is in with a very tough, aggressive fighter.
"Angulo is a hungry and determined fighter, but so is Erislandy. We're excited about fighting on June 8."
ROBERT GARCIA, Marcos Maidana's Trainer
"We're training hard for this fight and we know what type of fight we have in front of us. We cannot take this fight lightly.
"We've gotten some great sparring in for this fight and I know Josesito and his coach have done the same. We're actually pretty good friends with Henry (Ramirez). We just know this is a fight that fans are really going to enjoy.
"We know both fighters' styles and we know this could turn out to be one of the best fights of the year. As everyone who has seen the last few of Maidana's fights knows, he is starting to use his jab a little more and using a little more footwork, in and out, so we're going to fight smart. I know this will be end up in a war and whoever is the best conditioned has the best chance to win
"I fought most of my fights on SHOWTIME so I'm just so happy to be part of SHOWTIME again.''
HENRY RAMIREZ, Josesito Lopez's Trainer
"Josesito has been living with me at my place the last few weeks. He wanted to do it and it was his idea. This way there are no distractions. Just eat, sleep and think boxing. It's been working out great.
"The return to 147 pounds will do him a lot of good. I think the time off will do him a lot of good, too, but we didn't really plan to be off this long.
"This fight, Josesito and Maidana, is a Fight of the Year candidate. Robert Garcia and I are good friends, but this is a sport and I know he has been preparing Maidana like I've been preparing Josesito.
"This will be a terrific fight."
VIRGIL HUNTER, Alfredo Angulo's Trainer
"I want to thank SHOWTIME and Golden Boy. This is going to be a great fight. We have great respect for Lara, who's a great Cuban fighter, but we know what a big chance this is for us.
"I believe Angulo has been judged a little harshly; after all, he has only had two fights after spending nine months in detention. That's tough for a fighter to be away that long. His first comeback fight lasted a minute. The last fight, he went 12 strong rounds and closed the show. He'll be even better on June 8.
"I don't think the styles will make a difference. The winner will be who wants it more. I expect Alfredo to hit another level. He's prepared and excited to fight Lara.
"Don't miss it. Tell a friend."

Mayweather has six approved opponents for six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has already approved six opponents for his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS. According to the Boston Herald these are the fighters that Mayweather has approved of to fight for his 30 months $250 million contract with Showtime/CBS: Guerrero, Marcos Maidana, Alfredo Angulo, Danny Garcia, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Devon Alexander.

Of that list, only Canelo would be considered a dangerous opponent for Floyd. Garcia is a light welterweight, Alexander tends to clinch a lot, Angulo is a slow 154 pounder, Maidana is also very slow, and Guerrero is a straight up fighter with little in the way of defensive skills. Missing from this list is Manny Pacquiao, the fighter that boxing fans feel would be Mayweather’s biggest threat. If all Mayweather Jr. has to do is beat Canelo, Angulo, Guerrero, Alexander, Garcia and Maidana in order to complete his six-fight contract within 30 months for Showtime/CBS then they’re not putting a lot of pressure on him. Pacquiao’s name should be in that list as well as Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse, Keith Thurman and Austin Trout. Alvarez is a good fighter, but he’s pretty slow and is like a bigger version of Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mayweather already proved that he can beat Marquez with ease, so it’s likely that Canelo will be no problems for Mayweather. Canelo obviously will be coming next after the Guerrero fight because Mayweather is going to want to get the most difficult fight out of the way as quick as possible in order to avoid facing him a year or two down the line when he starts to lose more of his skills.

It’s still a very winnable fight for Mayweather no matter when he faces Canelo because his style is made to order for him.

Garcia is someone whose situation is kind of precarious right now. Unless Golden Boy keeps him away from Matthysse and Amir Khan, we could see Garcia beaten in 2013. At that point there will be no reason for Mayweather to fight him. He’ll have to switch out Garcia’s name and insert Khan or Matthysse.

Molina Calling Out all 154-lb Champions

Chicago's "King" Carlos Molina and his team are sending out a challenge to the rest of the world's best junior middleweights.

Molina (19-4-2, 6 KOs) established himself as an elite fighter with a near shutout unanimous decision over former world champion Kermit Cintron last Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, and live on the SHOWTIME network.

"It's no longer a secret that Carlos Molina is the world's best 154-lb fighter," said Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing. "This is an open call to all the champions, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, Austin Trout, K9 Bundradge and Sergei Dzinziruk: Carlos Molina is ready and able to take any of you on."

In the comeback story of the year, Molina has gone from sitting on the shelf for two years to the breakout fighter of 2011 in the span of four months.

He returned for the first time since 2009 in March at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and fought to a controversial majority draw against Cuban sensation Erislandy Lara (most observers had Molina winning). He returned there on short notice a month later to take out hard-punching Allen Conyers via TKO 7. Then came Saturday's dominance over Cintron.

"If you think about it," stated Luis DeCubas, his advisor, "Lara beat Paul Williams and Cintron beat Alfredo Angulo and Carlos beat both of them, so he could be considered the top challenger in the world. We hope the sanctioning bodies will recognize his amazing accomplishments and move him into a position where he can fight for a world championship."

Margules says that when Molina finally does challenge for a title, it will be the end of an era.

"Once he's a champion, he'll finally stop being considered the underdog in every fight. That might take him some getting used to."

The Boxing Standard

Alfredo Angulo

Here’s what I don’t get: HBO takes Alfredo Angulo, a guy who is no better than a tough, willing club fighter, and constructs a clunky narrative around him (even though he’s had an entirely unexceptional life—more the norm for a fighter than anything out of the ordinary), dolls this blue-collar worker up in a stupid dog collar (which totally nullifies the image they’re trying to build for him), affixes a racist stereotype to his promotional interviews (Mexican fighters are all willing to leave their hearts in the ring, apparently), doesn’t take into account the remote possibility that his opponent (a recent beneficiary of similar HBO star-building treatment, but jettisoned when he failed in his first bigtime slot) might actually beat him a non-fixed fight, and then gets him bumped off in his first major exposure fight.

Could anyone get it more wrong? Why can’t the guys at HBO tell when they don’t have a particularly good fighter in front of them? Last night, they featured this poor kid (who’ll now be summarily—and justifiably—discarded) and the athletic but clueless Andre Berto. Neither guy can fight at anywhere close to elite level. And neither ever will. I still can’t get over hearing the announcing team cautioning the audience not to expect Berto, a putative world champion, to be as good as the A-list fighters in the division. Why shouldn’t subscribers expect him to be? And if he isn’t, why use him? It’s not as if he’s an exciting fighter to watch.

Sometimes I think I take too many shots at HBO. But it’s hard for me to figure out how an organization with so much money and so many resources can have such poor instincts when it comes to their boxing development.See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

FIREWORKS GUARANTEED BERTO VS URANGO and CINTRON VS ANGULO HEADLINE HBO BOXING AFTER DARK ON MAY 30th

HOLLYWOOD, FL– Hype and brash talk have become a part of most boxing promotions in recent years, but for May 30th’s HBO Boxing After Dark doubleheader at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida, none of that is necessary when Andre Berto defends his welterweight title against junior welterweight champion Juan Urango, and junior middleweight knockout artists Alfredo Angulo and Kermit Cintron meet in the center of the ring.

Simply put, this is a can’t miss event in terms of high stakes, power punching, and excitement.

“When Lou DiBella and I discussed this event, the first thing we thought of was that this card goes back to the early days of Boxing After Dark and what the series was designed to do,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “We’ve got four hungry fighters, four action fighters, and only two can leave the Hard Rock with a victory. These guys are all going to leave it all in the ring to get the win, but the real winners that night are going to be the fans. I haven’t been this excited about a single event in a long time.”

Margules has good reason to be excited, considering that the Ferocious Four of Berto, Urango, Angulo, and Cintron possess a combined record of 90-3-2 with 74 KOs. That’s an amazing knockout percentage of over 82%, almost ensuring that on May 30th, somebody’s going to be hitting the canvas.

Berto vs Urango, a 12 round bout for the WBC welterweight championship of the world, is presented by DiBella Entertainment and Seminole Warriors Boxing and will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 9:45 pm ET/PT. In the televised co-feature, junior middleweights Alfredo Angulo and Kermit Cintron will slug it out.

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

MARTINEZ DEFENDS INTERIM WBC 154 LBS. TITLE VERSUS CINTRON FEB. 14 ON HBO

***Interim WBC Jr. Middleweight Titlist Sergio Martinez Takes on Kermit Cintron as Part of HBO “BAD” Tripleheader, Feb. 14, at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL***

New York– DiBella Entertainment serves up a Valentine’s Day treat with the addition of a potentially explosive 154 pound title fight between interim WBC champion Sergio Martinez and former IBF welterweight kingpin Kermit Cintron, to HBO’s Boxing After Dark on Saturday, February 14, at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

The scheduled 12-rounder will be the first bout of 2009 for both fighters. Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KOs) was supposed to defend his interim belt against undefeated Joe Greene on the recent DBE-promoted Berto-Collazo welterweight championship card in Biloxi, MS, but illness forced WBO # 4 rated Greene to withdraw. “Maravilla” Martinez was then briefly scheduled fight Daniel Santos before the WBA junior middleweight champion changed his mind…claiming lack of proper preparation time. Cintron (30-2, 27 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over former IBF 140 lbs. champion Lovemore N'dou on the Taylor-Lacy DBE show, seen on HBO this past November 15, in Nashville, TN. “El Asesino” Cintron is currently rated the # 2 welterweight in the world by the IBF.

Sergio Martinez has been anxious for the opportunity to build on his spectacular knockout win over Alex Bunema on HBO this past October, while Kermit Cintron is riding high again following his recent victory over N’dou. It says a lot about the character of two great professional fighters when Sergio and Kermit are willing to put it all on the line against each other. Both guys want to be the best and neither one will pass up an opportunity to prove it!” said DBE president Lou DiBella.

Madrid, Spain’s Martinez, by way of Buenos Aires, is 33-year-old southpaw and former IBO 154 pound titlist, who put the American boxing audience on notice in October, as “Maravilla” produced a dazzling TKO victory over then WBA # 1 rated contender Alex Bunema to earn the interim WBC 154 pound title.

One of boxing’s hardest punchers, former welterweight champion Cintron won the vacant IBF title in October 2006 with an impressive display of power punching – halting Mark Suarez in six one-sided rounds. Born in Carolinas, Puerto Rico, Cintron, 29, now fights out of Reading, PA.

Martinez vs. Cintron is part of an HBO tripleheader also featuring unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell defending against Ali Funeka and Alfredo Angulo vs. Ricardo Mayorga in a WBC 154 lbs. eliminator.

Tickets information for the Feb. 14 boxing tripleheader will be announced shortly. The BankAtlantic Center is the home arena for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League.

See you at the Fights.

New York-based Irishman James Moore heads to Los Angeles to train for December 13 challenge of NABF junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman

New York-based Irishman James Moore heads to Los Angeles to train for December 13 challenge of NABF junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman on Showtime.

The extremely popular James Moore, 16-1 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, New York, will depart for Los Angeles on November 5 to train for his December 13 challenge of NABF junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The 10 round-bout will open the ShoBox: The New Generation broadcast that that will be headlined by the rubber match between WBO lightweight champion Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres. Top Rank, Inc. is promoting the show.

The 30-year-old Moore is looking forward to this tremendous crossroads bout between two foreign-born, New York-based fighters. The 28-year-old Foreman, 26-0 (8 KOS), was born in Belarus but began boxing in Israel.

Moore will train at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, where plenty of sparring is available. Moore is also looking forward to reuniting with professional middleweight Craig McEwan, 13-0 (7 KOS), a native of Scotland who now lives and trains in Los Angeles. He and Moore were amateur rivals who have become good friends. The southpaw McEwan is scheduled to fight unbeaten sensation Alfredo Angulo on November 22 in Las Vegas.

“I should be able to get a lot of work with Craig, as well as all of the other speedy fighters in L.A.,” said Moore. “In order to beat Yuri, you have to chase him down and take away his legs. There are lots of fighters at the Wild Card who can emulate his style.”

Since an injured hand has completely healed, Moore says that he is physically, mentally and emotionally ready for the tough challenge ahead.

“Fighting an unbeaten boxer on ShoBox is just what I need for my career right now,” said Moore. “Somebody has to be the first man to beat Yuri, so it might as well be me. I’ve been looking to move my career to the next level for quite some time now. This is a very big step in the right direction, and I aim to fully take advantage of it.”
