No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on Bernard Hopkins and the 2013 Fighter of the Year Award

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on Bernard Hopkins and the 2013 Fighter of the Year Award
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell, who is also co-editor of The Boxing Standard (http://boxingstandard.com).
With his commanding and impressive unanimous decision victory October 26 over the 30-year-old challenger Karo Murat (25-2-1, 15 KOs), the 48-year-old IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard "The Alien" Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KOs) is still doing things in the ring perviously thought to be impossible or at least highly improbable. He has thus, in his 25th year as a professional fighter, legitimately put his name into consideration as a candidate for 2013 Fighter of the Year.
We spoke about this phenomenon with Charles Farrell by phone Tuesday.
"Absolutely he should be considered," he said. "Whether he wins it or not, I don't know. But he's had two good wins. And I think if you frame it historically, which I think it's a fair thing to do, I think that's a legitimate element of what you look for, he's very, very much in the mix."
His preference for Fighter of the Year is the unbeaten 122-pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, who essentially put on a boxing clinic against last year's consensus Fighter of the Year, Nonito Donaire, with a unanimous decision victory in April. That was, he said, the best performance by a fighter he had seen "certainly in recent memory."
But, he added about Hopkins, "If he were to win it, I think it's a deserving win. He's not the guy I would choose, but I have no quarrel with him winning it."
We also discussed how Hopkins quickly analyzes his opponents in their fights and responds accordingly, why he believes it is unlikely that Hopkins will fight Floyd Mayweather next, the dwindling talent pool in boxing, and much, much more.

MACKLIN TEAMS UP WITH FAMILIAR FOE AHEAD OF DECEMBER FIGHT

Matthew “Mack The Knife” Macklin will return to action in the US before the end of the year with a familiar face in his corner. Macklin faces the world rated Willie Nelson in Atlantic City on December 7th in a fight that will be broadcast live by HBO. Leading his corner on the night will be former opponent Jamie Moore as the duo link up over seven years on from their epic British title duel back in 2006.

That bout has entered boxing folklore as one of the greatest fights in British boxing history as the two men engaged in a toe to toe, back and forth war that eventually saw Moore emerge victorious. The Manchester native would go on to add the European Light Middleweight title to his British crown before retiring in 2010, subsequently embarking on a second career as a trainer.

Meanwhile Macklin gave up his battle with the scales and moved up to middleweight to win the British and European titles in devastating fashion before going on to fight for the World title against Felix Sturm, Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin. Now Macklin wants to rebound from defeat to pound for pound contender Gennady Golovkin in June and put himself back in line for another World title shot.

“Obviously I was very disappointed with the loss to Golovkin but I have to keep things in perspective and it’s pretty clear that Golovkin is a special fighter”, said Macklin. “In hindsight I probably used the wrong tactics in that fight but I’ve no excuses, he’s the best I’ve ever fought. That was my third world title fight but I was robbed against Felix Sturm in Germany in my first attempt and then pushed Sergio Martinez very hard in my second crack. Obviously things didn’t go my way against Golovkin but both he and Martinez are in pretty much everyone’s top 5 pound for pound list so I know I still have what it takes to win a world title.

“I think working with Jamie will definitely be a fresh start for me and I’m very excited about working with him. We’ve have known each other for years and our fight back in 2006 only strengthened the respect we have for each other and obviously he brings a wealth of experience from his own career.”

Moore is equally excited about the opportunity to work with his former foe. “When you go through a fight like we went through then you form quite a bond”, revealed Moore. “I was already friends with Mathew before we fought and that only strengthened the bond and over the years we have always kept in touch. Since our fight I’ve watched him improve, adapt and become a world class fighter and I want to help him realise his dream of becoming a world champion. To be part of that journey would be very special for me as well because of what we went through in our fight.

“It’s not about making any major changes to Matthew’s style at this stage in his career. It’s more about ironing out wrinkles and getting Matthew to box to his strengths and come up with the right game plan. I actually covered Willie Nelson’s last fight for Sky and he’s a very capable fighter and has a decent pedigree but I believe that his style will suit Matthew and I know he’ll want to put on another devastating performance to get himself back in the world title picture again.”

Macklin shares his new trainer confidence in getting the right result in Atlantic City on December 7th. “It’s a dangerous fight but I’m not one to duck a challenge,” said Macklin. “He has quite a few early KO’s so I’ll have to be careful early on but I’m confident that I can get the win so I’m really looking forward to it and getting back to winning ways.”

The stacked, nine-bout event is headlined by an exciting flyweight showdown between reigning Inficta FC champion Barb Honchak (8-2), of Bettendorf, Iowa and three-time "Fight of the Night" winner Leslie "The Peacemaker" Smith (6-3-1), of Pleasanton, California.
The 34-year-old Honchak, a protégé of living legend Pat Miletich, reeled-off her seventh straight victory on July 13, dominating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Vanessa Porto to become the first Invicta FC 125-pound champion in history on July 13.
Smith, a dangerous 31-year-old striker, has become a crowd favorite, engaging in all-out slugfests with her opponents on the five Invicta FC cards that she has appeared on.  On July 13, competing in her first fight as a flyweight after campaigning as a bantamweight, Smith defeated Jennifer Maia by way of a unanimous three-round decision.
Invicta FC strawweight (115 lbs.) champion Carla "Cookie Monster" Esparza (9-2), of Redondo Beach (CA), takes on undefeated Brazilian superstar Claudia Gadelha(11-0) in the co-feature.
The 26-year-old Esparza, a student of famed trainer Colin Oyama, will step in the cage for the first time since sustaining a knee injury during training earlier this year.  In her last effort at Invicta FC 4 on January 5, she registered a unanimous decision over
"Rowdy" Bec Hyatt for her fourth consecutive win.
Unstoppable since turning pro in 2008, Gadelha has improved her striking to go with her outstanding submission game.  The 24-year-old fighter will make her second start under the Invicta FC banner having scored an impressive win by third round (3:58) TKO over JEWELS champion Ayaka Hamasaki last July.
In the first-ever Invicta FC bantamweight (135 pounds) world championship bout, KO specialist Lauren Murphy (7-0), of Anchorage, Alaska, meets fellow unbeaten star
Miriam Nakamoto(2-0, 1 NC) of Dublin (CA).

Murphy has been perfect, thus far, in the Invicta FC cage, earning back-to-back unanimous decision victories over Kaitlin Young and Sarah "The Monster" D'Alelio on April 5 and July 13, respectively.  Prior to her Invicta FC debut, the 30-year-old had scored TKO finishes in all five of her fights.

Veteran Muay Thai champion Nakamoto extended her perfect record at Invicta FC 6, scoring a first round (2:08) TKO on Duda Yankovich off a knee strike and series of punches, earning her "KO of the Night" honors.

Riding a four-fight win streak, Felice "Lil' Bulldog" Herrig(9-4) of Buffalo Grove, Illinois will make her highly-anticipated Invicta FC debut in a strawweight match against unbeaten prospect Tecia "The Tiny Tornado" Torres (3-0), of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Also fighting on the undercards is Scotland's Joanne Calderwood (7-0) versus Finnish strawweight Katja "Killer Bunny" Kankaanpaa (8-0-1) in a battle of unbeaten; Canadian featherweight (145 lbs.) powerhouse Julia "The Jewel" Budd(5-2) puts her three-fight win streak on the line against fellow Canadian, submission ace Charmaine "Not So Sweet" Tweet (4-3); Cincinnati (OH) flyweight Zoila Frausto Gurgel (12-3) collides with Porto (15-6), who plans to rebound from her aforementioned loss to Honchak; Minneapolis (MN) bantamweight Kelly Kobold (18-3) makes her long-awaited Invicta FC debut against Tonya "Triple Threat" Evinger(11-6), fighting out of Odessa, Missouri; two Invicta FC newcomers,New Jersey flyweight Munah "The Perfect Storm" Holland (5-2) and Nina "The Strina" Ansaroff (5-4), of Fort Lauderdale, square-off against each other to round-out the card. http://myemail.constantcontact.com/Invicta-Fighting-Championships-7-Dec--7-on-PPV.html?soid=1107899787415&aid=W4ojUE1pNt4

Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, filmed while the former #boxing champ performed his one-man show on Broadway, premieres on November 16th at 8PM. Only on HBO.

*HBO just released a new trailer for the premiere of “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth,” the Spike Lee-directed film version of the boxer’s one-man stage show.
In the clip, Tyson figures that he was arrested “over 38 times” by the time he was 12-years-old, dishes about infamous anger problems and takes a few mock swings.
The film is drawn from the Lee-produced show that Mike Tyson performed in Las Vegas, Broadway and on tour.
While a previously released teaser had set a serious tone, the new trailer showcases more humor. The clip trots out a memorable one-liner from the boxer: “I know many are probably wondering, what the hell is Mike Tyson going to do up here onstage here tonight — you know, frankly, I’m wondering the same thing.”
Here’s HBO‘s official trailer:

Michael 'The Brazilian Rocky' Oliveira Headlining First Time in Florida at 'Knockout Night at Hard Rock Live' November 12 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida; NOT A TYPICAL BOXER Michael "The Brazilian Rocky" Oliveira away from the gym

Despite coming from a wealthy family, world-rated light middleweight Michael "The Brazilian Rocky" Oliveira (21-1, 16 KOs) believes he was born to box.  Oliveira headlines in his home state for the first time on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 7 p.m. ET during "Knockout Night at  Hard Rock Live," presented by MO Productions, at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

"Knockout Night at Hard Rock Live" will air live on SporTV, a Brazilian Sports television broadcast affiliate of TV Globo Network and TNC in Argentina.

Oliveira's grandfather, Joao Oliveira, was a sparring partner for Hall of Famer and Brazilian boxing icon Eder "Golden Bantam" Joffre who is one of Oliveira's most ardent supporters in Brazil.

"Boxing is something you are born to do," Oliveira remarked.  "You can't teach heart. You either have it, or you don't. Every day in boxing is a learning experience. Fighters need to be open-minded; like a sponge where you take everything in and apply what you've learned to be a better fighter."

Oliveira continued, "I was more of a brawler when I first started boxing. I've applied boxing skills to become more of a complete fighter.  I also learned how to play with my opponent's mind to confuse him during a fight.  Even after I'm a world champion, I won't be a perfect fighter because there's no such thing. Styles make fights and those change from fight to fight and you need to adjust to every fighter and situation."

The Brazilian-born Oliveira, who has lived in Miami since he was an infant, is rated No. 7 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 11 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).  He is the reigning Fecarbox and World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedebol light middleweight champion.

Oliveira takes on Noberto "Demonio" Gonzalez, a former Mexican Welterweight Champion, in the 10-round main event.  The 23-year-old Oliveira will be fighting in Florida for only the second time. His first fight there was four years ago in his fifth professional fight.

"This fight is very important for me because I live here and so many of my friends, family and fans haven't had the opportunity to watch me fight live," Oliveira said.  "I'm an international fighter but I'll have a little advantage fighting at home."

Oliveira is known as the "The Brazilian Rocky" because he has always idolized the late, great heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano whose son, Rocky Marciano Jr., will walk Oliveira into the ring on Nov. 12.

"It means the world to me," Oliveira explained.  "I loved the way Rocky Marciano fought and we have a somewhat similar style.  To look up to somebody and then have his family member walk me into the ring is such an honor.  He has never walked a fighter into the ring."

In the eight-round co-feature, former world champion Yuri Foreman (31-2, 8 KOs) faces Mexican knockout artist Javier "Pelon" Gomez (14-11, 10 KOs). One of the few modern-day Jewish world champions, WBC No. 14 ranked Foreman is an aspiring rabbi who was born in Belarus, moved to Israel, and resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Undefeated light heavyweight Yunieski "The Diamond" Gonzalez (12-0, 8 KOs), a former member of the Cuban National Boxing Team, faces former WBC FECARBOX champion Jinner Guerrero (7-1, 6 KOs) of Ecuador in a 10-round fight.

Also fighting on the undercard are unbeaten Cuban featherweight Hairon "El Maja" Socarras (7-0, 5 KOs) and Bahamian super featherweight Valentino Knowles (1-0) in six-round bouts; Cuban super middleweight Vilier Quinones (5-0, 3 KOs), heavyweight prospect and 2008 Cuban Olympian Robert Alfonso (2-0) and Egyptian light heavyweight Ahmed Elbiali (2-0, 2 KOs) in four-round matches.  Gonzalez, Socarras, Knowles, Quinines, Alfonso and Elbiali are all fighting out of Miami.  Their opponents will soon be announced.  All fights and fighters are subject to change.
