Byron Mitchell replaces Berrio as
LAS VEGAS – Former two-time world champion Byron “Slama from Bama” Mitchell has replaced Alejandro “Naco” Berrio as light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov’s opponent, Saturday night in the main event on an all-star card, outdoors at Khadkimukan Stadium in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan. Berrio had visa issues in Colombia.
Saturday’s show (May 9), presented by KZ Event Productions, owned by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, will be taped live for later broadcasts in North America.
2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles will all be on the line, as well as the vacant IBA world crown, against present NABA USA light heavyweight champion Mitchell (27-4-1, 20 KOs).
Reigning NABA USA title-holder Mitchell first captured the WBA super middleweight belt in 1999, stopping defending champion Frankie Liles in the 11th round. Byron, 1999 Ntional Golden Gloves middleweight champion, recaptured the WBA crown in 2001 via a 12th round knockout of Manny Siaca. Two successful title defenses followed against Siaca (DEC12) and Julio Cesar Green (TKO4). All four of Mitchell’s four career losses have been to world champions – Joe Calzaghe, Sven Ottke, Bruno Girard and Richard Hall.
“Although we’re disappointed Beibut won’t be fighting Berrio as planned,” Chingis Shumenov said, “we’re excited that Mitchell accepted our offer to fight him in the main event. We’ve been targeting Mitchell, who is a world-class fighter that’s fought some of the biggest names in boxing.”
Former IBF light middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin will fight at home for the first time in seven years against Luis “Tyson” Augusto Dos Santos (24-15, 20 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature. Born in Russia, reigning NABF middleweight title-holder Karmazin (38-3-1, 24 KOs), rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 10 by the WBC, was stationed in the military and later lived in Uralsk, Kazakhstan, where his son, Oleg, still resides and studies.
Also fighting on Saturday’s card 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), making his KZ Event Productions debut, versus WBC Latino and Brazilian title-holder Luzimar “Tiger of Itacre” Gonzaga (25-4, 20 KOs), in an 8-round light heavyweight match.
Former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (33-11, 19 KOs) meets former Brazilian lightweight champion Sidney Siqueira (12-3-1, 7 KOs) in an 8-round bout
The undercard is loaded with undefeated Uzbekistan light middleweight Ravshan Hudoinazarov (7-0. 5 KOs) vs. former Brazilian lightweight title-holder Isak “Iza” Tavares (16-6, 4 KOs), plus Chimkent hometown favorites such as light middleweight Kanat Orakbaev (2-0, 0 KOs) vs. Umid Soliev (1-1, 0 KOs) and pro-debuting heavyweight Doszhan Ospanov. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
See you at the Fights.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with wrestling legend Kevin Jackson, who has just been named the head wrestling coach for the Iowa State Cyclones. Kevin Jackson has been an Olympic and world champion wrestler, as well as a mixed martial arts fighter in UFC and Extreme Fighting.
We had a lengthy and in-depth discussion about his new position as well as many issues facing the sport of wrestling. Among the topics were the importance to him of returning to coach at Iowa State, where Kevin was an All-American wrestler and a member of the 1987 team, the last time Iowa State won an NCAA team championship; the storied rivalry between the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones; what Iowa State can do to recapture an NCAA title; the ongoing support of wrestling from the Iowa State fans and supporters, known as Cyclone Nation; Cyclone wrestling history and culture; the plans to enhance the training of college wrestlers in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling; some of the problems with the ever-changing rules of international wrestling; why many college wrestlers have been turning to mixed martial arts; how college wrestling can better market and promote itself; the important role of African-American wrestling coaches; and much more.

KO Artist Brunson Signs with Triple-Mac
Virginia-based Triple-Mac Promotions is proud to announce the signing of powerhouse Philadelphia middleweight Tyrone "Young Gun" Brunson to a promotional agreement.
The sharpshooting Brunson (19-0-1, 19 KOs) set a boxing record with 19 consecutive first-round knockouts to begin his career before fighting to a draw in his last outing.
"Tyrone was beginning to go stale by chasing that record and not facing the kind of opposition he should have been to develop properly," said Triple-Mac President Freddie Mac of his new client. "We believe in Tyrone and we intend to bring him to the top levels of the sport properly. He has the talent and the natural punching power to become a world champion."
24-year-old Brunson surpassed the North American record with his 15th first-round stoppage (vs. David Johnson, March 9, 2007) and tied the world record of 18 set by current WBC Lightweight Champion Edwin Valero of Venezuela - in June of last year against Jamie Waru in Auckland, New Zealand. He then broke the all-time record in 72 seconds against Francis McKechnai on March 29, 2008.
Brunson is the first big signing for Triple-Mac who have established a respected reputation doing shows in the Norfolk area. "We are ready to make a dent in boxing by treating our fighters right and giving our fans the quality of fights they don't mind paying to see. Tyrone will be our first world champion and will clear the way at the top for a long line of Triple-Mac fighters.
See you at the Fights.

Mayme Hatcher Johnson, author, and widow of Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson, dead at 94
Mayme Hatcher Johnson, a native of North Carolina who spent most of her life in Harlem, died in Philadelphia on Friday, May 1, 2009 of respiratory failure.
Mrs. Johnson was born in 1914 in NC, and moved to New York City in 1938, where she found work as a waitress in a club owned by singer/actress Ethel Waters. In 1948 she met and married Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, the legendary Harlem gangster who was depicted in the movies The Cotton Club, Hoodlum, and American Gangster.
In her book, Harlem Godfather: The Rap on My Husband, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, she told of meeting Bumpy for the first time in a Harlem restaurant.
Before long I was known as Bumpy’s girl. It was a good title to possess. It meant I could get in anywhere I wanted to go, I was treated as queen wherever I went, and I was showered with gifts and jewelry on a steady basis. It also meant that I was constantly accosted by other women who were in love with Bumpy and wanted me out of the way. At first I was upset, but then I pretty much learned to ignore them. Like Bumpy said, they wouldn’t even be stepping to me if they didn’t realize that I was the one real woman in his life. And hell if I was going to let them back me away from a man who treated me as good as Bumpy treated me. . .
Bumpy and I met in April 1948. In October that year we were driving past 116th and St. Nicholas Avenue in his Cadillac when he suddenly turned to me and said, “Mayme, I think you and I should go ahead and get married.”
I was stunned, but I kept my composure. I said simply, “Is that right?”
He said, “Yes, that’s right,” and kept on driving.
We were married in a civil ceremony just two weeks later.
She remained married to Bumpy until his death of a heart attack in 1968, though he was incarcerated at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary for ten years of their marriage.
Mrs. Johnson was a long-time member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Harlem, and was known for her charitable and volunteer activities.
“Mayme was a class act, and had a big heart,” said Henry “Perk” Perkins, a Harlem restaurateur who was a close friend of both Bumpy and Mrs. Johnson. “She was the sweetest woman in the world, but she didn’t take any nonsense. She carried herself like a real lady and expected to be treated as such.”
In 2004, Mrs. Johnson moved to Philadelphia, and three years later decided to finally write a biography about her husband, so that “people could know the truth about him rather than all the myths.” Harlem Godfather was published in February 2008. More than 200 people attended the book launch party held in Harlem.
“Yeah, she was tickled pink to tell people she was an author at age 93,” Perkins said with a laugh. “Boy, it really made her proud to finally get that book done.”
Mrs. Johnson was notified two days before her death that a film production company was negotiating to purchase a book option for Harlem Godfather.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by a granddaughter Margaret Johnson of New York City; a grandson Anthony Johnson of London, England; a sister Lily Andrews of North Carolina; a brother Melvin Hatcher of North Carolina; and two goddaughters Karen E. Quinones Miller and Camille R. Quinones Miller of Philadelphia. A daughter, Ruthie Johnson and stepdaughter, Elease Johnson both died in 2006.

A Tribute to Tony Petronelli May 20 in Brockton
BROCKTON– Former world title challenger Tony Petronelli will be honored for 40 years of dedication to boxing May 20 at Joe Angelo’s Café in Brockton.
Petronelli was co-managed and co-trained by his father, Pat, and uncle, Goody, the same combination that handled world middleweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler. Tony (42-4-1, 22 KOs) captured the NABF, United States and New England light welterweight titles during his seven-year pro career (1972-79).
A bevy of boxing dignitaries are scheduled to attend the May 20th tribute including Tony Demarco, “Irish” Micky Ward, Kevin McBride, Vito Antuofermo, Goody Petronelli, Paul Poirier, Beau Jaynes, Mike Pusateri and Doug Pendarvis. Veteran trainer Pit Perron will serve as master of ceremonies.
Petronelli made his pro debut July 27, 1972 in Portland (ME), knocking out Jose Pagan Rivera in the opening round. Later that year, Tony fought at the old Boston Garden on the Emile Griffith-Joe DeNucci undercard, defeating Ivelaw Eastman by 6-round decision.
Highlights of Petronelli’s career include a New England title-winning performance in 1972 against Carlos Garcia (DEC12) in Brockton and a successful title defense the following year versus Beau Jaynes in Boston, five U.S. light welterweight championship victories – Petronelli headlined a 1974 show at the Boston Garden against Johnny Copeland and Hagler fought in the co-feature – and NABF title belt winning fight in 1976 off a 12th round knockout of Gaetan Hart. Tony was stopped in the third-round of his only world title shot in 1976 by Wilfred Benitez for the WBA light welterweight championship.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER RETURNS TO THE SWEET SCIENCE
Las Vegas, NV- Sixteen months after one of the greatest fighters ever to grace the sport of boxing had his last fight and subsequently announced his retirement, the former six-time world champion and 2007 Boxing Writers Association of America Fighter of the Year, Floyd "Money" Mayweather announced his return to the sweet science at a press conference today in Las Vegas.
"When I made my decision to retire last year, I felt like it was time for me to go as I had been boxing my whole life and felt like I had done all that I could do," said Mayweather, whose success and popularity in and out of the ring made him a household name and one of the sport's biggest attractions. "But after I had time to rest, enjoy life with my family and friends, I started to miss the competition and my fans. I am ready to return to boxing and give people another dose of the Mayweather experience."
Much to the surprise of the sports world, Mayweather left the ring at the top of his game, having amassed an undefeated professional record of 39-0, 25 KOs and championships in five weight divisions. The then-recognized best pound-for-pound fighter in the world was coming off of back-to-back 2007 mega-performances with his historic May 5 victory over Oscar de la Hoya - in the highest grossing pay-per-view event in all of sports history - followed by his stellar December 8 tenth round knockout over the previously undefeated Ricky Hatton. These fights catapulted Mayweather near the top of the all-time money-earning list in the sport.
That same year, Mayweather's star-power and crossover appeal were reaching new heights. His appearances on ABC's Dancing With The Stars and his main event performance in the WWE's WrestleMania XXIV helped to elevate his worldwide recognition to even higher levels. Proof of Mayweather's staying power came with his recent appearance in an AT&T High-Speed Internet commercial that has been showing nationally, including multiple airings during CBS's coverage of this year's Masters Golf Tournament, despite him having been a retired athlete.
More importantly, while Mayweather stepped away from the sport, the world's top fighters continued to ask to fight him and fans everywhere were asking for him to come back to the ring.
"I retired from the sport, but it was as if I had never made an announcement," said Mayweather. "Fighters were constantly calling me out and fans would stop me all the time and ask me to make a return. It feels good to be back and trust me, I will deliver the same electrifying performances I always have throughout my career."
Mayweather makes his return against the dangerous and highly-touted five-time world champion in three weight divisions Juan Manuel Marquez, who is rated among the top fighters in the world today and considered to be a very aggressive selection by Mayweather for his first challenge after his long layoff. The bout will take place on Saturday, July 18 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live on HBO pay-per-view
"I am not wasting any time with a tune-up fight," said Mayweather. "I'm going straight to the top. Marquez called me out immediately after his victory over Juan Diaz in February and now he gets his wish. What he is going to find out is that you should be very careful what you wish for."
Mayweather continued, "the rest of those fighters who called me out can get in line too because they are going to get their chance...one at a time and slowly but surely. It's going to be a great return and a wonderful 'experience.' Don't blink - I'M BACK!"
See you at the Fights.

Storm Center Warning:“Irish Lightning” heading East Unbeaten Dean Byrne fighting May 15th in Yonkers
LOS ANGELES– Fresh off of his impressive victory last Friday night in Las Vegas, unbeaten light welterweight sensation Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne is heading East to fight in New York for the first time May 15 against an opponent to be determined on the O’Shea Brothers Boxing-promoted card in Yonkers.
Crumlin-native Byrne, 24, floored Mexican southpaw Jose Reynoso (10-3, 1 KO) three times in the first four-rounds en route to an entertaining 8-round win by decision at South Point Hotel Casino to keep his perfect pro record intact (11-0, 4 KOs).
Byrne, trained by the great Freddie Roach, has found a home at the famed Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, where Dean has benefited from sparring with Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Juan Marquez. A veteran of more than 200 amateur fights, Byrne was an Irish National champion who turned pro in Australia, capturing the New South Wales State belt in only his fourth pro fight, and adding the Australian crown one fighter later in a 10-round bout. On his way from Australia to relocate in Boston, Dean stopped in Los Angeles and trained at Wild Card, where Roach took an instant shine to his now protégé.

ABREGU KNOCKS OUT GARCIA IN THRILLER; QUINTERO EARNS UNANIMOUS WIN OVER FERGUSON; DON’T MISS THE REPLAY WEDNESDAY MAY 6, 10 P.M., ON SHOWTIME
SANTA YNEZ, Calif.– Undefeated Carlos Abregu met the canvas twice Friday night before sending Irving Garcia there with just one second remaining in the fourth round for a TKO win in the welterweight main event on ShoBox: The New Generation. It was an action-packed fight that had the Chumash Casino Resort crowd on its feet cheering for more.
Abregu vs Garcia – Irving Garcia surprised everyone, especially Carlos Abregu, with his first-round knockdown Friday night on ShoBox: The New Generation. But it was Abregu who got the win with a technical knockout when referee Jack Reiss called the fight at 2:59 in the fourth round. Abregu vs Garcia – Carlos Abregu recorded the knockout punch with just one second remaining in the fourth round against Irving Garcia. Abregu vs Garcia – Carlos Abregu said after the fight he was surprised by the speed and power of his welterweight opponent, 30-year-old Irving Garcia.
Abregu (27-0, 22 KOs), of Salta, Argentina, overcame two knockdowns in the first and fourth rounds, finally connecting on a straight right followed by a right uppercut sending Garcia (17-4-3, 8 KOs) to the ground before referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight to Garcia’s visible displeasure.
“That was one of the most wildly entertaining fights I’ve seen in years,” SHOWTIME announcer Nick Charles said afterward. “Wow. Some guys would have come unwound after being hit like that. It was all bullets and gun smoke tonight."
Abregu said he “just got caught” in the first round on a right counter by Garcia but came back in the second round with a flurry of combinations that had Garcia off balance the entire round. “I don’t know how I survived that second round,” said Garcia, of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. “I’m very disappointed
Said Abregu, sent to the floor on a left hook by Garcia with 1:27 in the fourth: “I thought my hand was going to hurt I was hitting him so hard in the second round. I knew I had hurt him, but he kept coming. He wouldn’t go down.”
Abregu said he was surprised with the performance of the 30-year-old Garcia. “On the tape I watched of him I didn’t think he would be that fast,” he said.
In an entertaining co-feature lightweight bout, Marvin Quintero (16-1, 12 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, dominated Wes Ferguson (20-4-1, 6 KOs) of Las Vegas, over eight rounds winning on all three scorecards, 78-74, 79-73, 78-74. The evening was presented by Gary Shaw Productions.
Marvin Quintero dominated Wes Ferguson for eight of 10 rounds, winning the lightweight bout Friday night by scores of 78-74, 79-73, 78-74 in the co-feature.
At the end of the second round Ferguson staggered Quintero and then swung big, missing and slipping to the canvas. “I had my opportunities to knock him out but I wanted to prove to people that I could box,” Quintero said. “It was a very tough fight but none of his punches really hurt me. I give myself a nine out of 10. I could have worked harder training for this fight.”
Undefeated super middleweight Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell was in the stands watching his brother Anthony win a super middleweight undercard bout in a first-round knockdown against Alexander Quiroz of Miami, Fla., in just under a minute. Andre was interviewed by SHOWTIME’s Steve Farhood between the telecast’s two fights about his future plans.
Dirrell grew up in the same gym as Ferguson in Flint, Mich. “I’ve known Wes since he was 8 years old,” said Dirrell, who hopes to fight again at the end of June. “I thought he hit the jab perfect tonight. He just didn’t counter. He’s slick enough to be a top prospect. I think he can do it.”
Dirrell last fought on SHOWTIME in March, winning a sixth-round TKO over Derrick Findley to improve to 18-0 with 13 knockouts.
2008 Olympian Gary Russell Jr. fought on the undercard, beating Alvaro Muro (6-14, 5 KOs) of Moreno Valley, Calif., in a four-rounder by decision, 40-35 on all three judges’ scorecards. It was the third straight win to no defeats for Russell, who turned pro in January. Russell was interviewed between fights Friday.
Russell vs Muro – Olympian Gary Russell Jr., won a unanimous decision over Alvaro Muro, 40-35, on all three judges’ scorecards.
“I give myself a B tonight,” Russell said. “I’m glad I fought someone who didn’t just go down right away. He was tough.”
Charles called Friday’s action from ringside with boxing historian Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox was Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.
“That was the most exciting fight I’ve seen in my eight years doing ShoBox,” Farhood said after the Abregu fight.
Friday’s ShoBox telecast will re-air on SHOWTIME 2® on Wednesday, May 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The telecast also will be available ON DEMAND from May 4-May 31.
Mixed Martial Arts is up next on SHOWTIME as the network will premiere a new series for the next generation of MMA stars entitled Strikeforce Challengers.

The debut of Strikeforce Challengers will take place on Friday, May 15 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. In the main event, unbeaten 155-pound sensation Billy Evangelista (9-0) will face BJ Penn protégé “Iron” Mike Aina (11-6-1). The SHOWTIME telecast will air live beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast) and feature up to five fights.

Open letter from John Ruiz to the Top American Heavyweights To America’s “Top” Heavyweight Boxers
I’ve been told I’m not the most fan-friendly fighter in the world, my style often criticized as being ugly, but I’m proud to say I’ve never ducked a worthy opponent. For the past month or two, though, I’ve read and heard a lot BS about how I shouldn’t be the WBA mandatory title challenger. A few totally unproven, so-called contenders have whined about them deserving a world title shot more than I do.
Why? Who have Chris Arreola, Eddie Chambers, Kevin Johnson or Brian Minto beaten to deserve a world title shot? Nobody! Just compare my list of victories to yours. You guys haven’t come close to doing what I’ve accomplished.
I’ve been where you’re trying to get – 11 world title fights (2 WBA titles) -- and I’m even willing to risk my WBA mandatory title shot next year against the Chagaev-Valuev II winner just to show everyone that I’m entitled to another world championship fight. Prove me wrong. Stop all of the smack talk, try and beat me in the ring – the only place it really counts -- to be the real No. 1 American heavyweight. Next year, I’ll be fighting for the crown again unless one of you pretenders step-up and change my schedule.
Show the boxing world that you’re a true contender, not a pretender. You want it, come and get it – put your money where your mouth is. No more excuses, just contact my attorney Tony Cardinale (your promoters know how), and let’s make it happen.
See you at the Fights.

Lashley-Sapp headlines “Ultimate Chaos” MMA PPV June 27in Biloxi, MS
BILOXI, Miss.– The cage may have to be reinforced for the “Ultimate Chaos” headliner as former WWE star Bobby Lashley and mixed-martial-arts legend Bob “The Beast” Sapp battle June 27 on a special pay-per-view event live from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The chiseled 6-3, 265-pound Lashley (2-0), 3-time NCAA champion (1996-98) and 4-time All-America wrestler at Missouri Valley College, takes on the 6-4, 350-pound Sapp (10-3-1), who played in the NFL for four years before becoming an iconic combat fighter in Japan.
“Ultimate Chaos,” presented by Prize Fight Promotions and Fight Force International, in association with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum, Treasure Bay Casino and Budweiser, is being produced and distributed by Gotham MMA and Integrated Sports at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN and DirecTV for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.
“There is a huge MMA fan base down here on the coast and this card speaks for itself,” co-promoter Ricky Derouen (Chairman of the Board, Fight Force International) said. “I’m very proud to have this event in my hometown. That really means a lot to me. Just to give an idea of the hype surrounding this event, the tickets go on sale May 8th. We have 1,300 floor seats available and 1,100 of those are already gone. The tickets aren’t even for sale, yet, so that’s a good thing.”
After graduating from Missouri Valley College, Lashley joined the U.S. Army and was a 2-time Armed Forces Champion and 2002 Military Games Championship silver medalist. Two years ago, Lashley became a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) superstar, joining Donald Trump at Wrestlemania 23 in a bet against WWE president Vince McMahon.
Lashley won the match and helped Trump shave McMahon’s head in the ring. Bobby made his MMA debut last December 13, stopping Joshua Franklin only 0.41 into the opening round, and March 21 he won a 3-round decision versus 37-fight veteran Jason Guida in Pensacola (FL).
Sapp starred as an offensive lineman on the University of Washington’s football team, winning the prestigious Morris Award, and he was selected in the third round of the NFL draft in 1997 by the Chicago Bears. Bob turned to pro wrestling after football and was later recruited by Pride in Japan, where his incredible size, strength and bull-rush style made him an instant fan favorite. He went on to star in K-1 as well as become an actor, playing roles in movies like The Longest Yard and Elektra.
In the co-feature, controversial Dutch heavyweight Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel faces Brazilian striker, Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (16-8-0), former UFC heavyweight title challenger.
Lightweight Din “Dinyero” Thomas (24-8-0), star of The Ultimate Fighter 4, meets former KOTC and Gladiator Challenge champion Javier “Showtime” Vasquez, while hot Canadian lightweight prospect Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (12-1-0) tangles with dangerous William “The Bull” Sriyapai (12-4-0).
Also fighting on the card, welterweights Brett Cooper (8-4-0) and Waachiim “Native Warrior” Spirit Wolf (5-4) throw-down against each other, Affliction vice president Tom Atencio (1-0) moves from the office to the cage against Randy Hedderick, middleweights James Oros (3-2-0) and Colby McMahan (1-0-0) also square-off.
See you at the Fights.

“Chop Chop” Corley chasing one more world title shot Fighting Sigueira May 9 on Shumenov-Berrio show in Kazakhstan
LAS VEGAS– Former world light welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley is traveling halfway around the planet in hopes of keeping alive his dream of becoming world champion once again.
Corley, fighting out of Washington D.C., faces former Brazilian lightweight champion Sidney Siqueira (12-3-1, 7 KOs) in an 8-round bout May 9 on a star-studded card, headlined by undefeated light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov against former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio, outdoors at Khadjimukan Stadium in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan.
The May 9 show, presented by KZ Event Productions, owned by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, will be taped live for later broadcasts in North America.
Corley (33-11, 19 KOs) has been on a comeback that took a bump hit this month when he was outright robbed, losing an 8-round decision to hometown favorite Hector Sanchez in Arizona.
“It was a great fight,” the slick southpaw Corley said. “I won but I lost. Everybody who saw it knew I won that fight. My head was down until I spoke to the promoter, Oscar (De La Hoya), who told me I really won the fight and he didn’t know what the judges were looking at. I felt better after that. We knew going in that I had to knockout my opponent to win. I tried to do that and hurt him, but he kept coming. Fans will be watching the rebirth of ‘Chop Chop’ on May 9th. I’m a different fighter today – much more aggressive. The Shumenovs are great promoters. They run clean shows, no delays. I’m looking forward to fighting on their show in Kazakhstan. I’m confident of a win and we’ll pick-up from there because I really want another world title shot. Right now, though, I’m trying to get somebody to translate ‘Chop Chop’ into Russian for me.”
The now 34-year-old Corley captured the WBO light welterweight title eight years ago, topping Felix Flores in the opening round, followed by two successfully title defenses via 12-round decisions against Ener Julio and Randall Bailey. Nearly half of DeMarcus’ pro losses have to world champions such as Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Zab Judah, Miquel Cotto, Junior Witter and Bailey.
2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles will all be on the line, as well as the vacant IBA world crown, versus Colombian knockout artist Berrio (28-5, 27 KOs), rated No. 9 by the IBF and No. 11 by the WBC.
Also fighting on the May 9th card is 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), making his KZ Event Productions debut, versus WBC Latino and Brazilian title-holder Luzimar “Tiger of Itacre” Gonzaga (25-4, 20 KOs), in an 8-round light heavyweight match.
The undercard is stacked from top to bottom with undefeated Uzbekistan light middleweight Ravshan Hudoinazarov (7-0. 5 KOs) vs. Andre Marcos Nascimento (13-2, 9 KOs), plus Chimkent hometown favorites such as light middleweight Kanat Orakbaev (2-0, 0 KOs) vs. Umid Soliev (1-1, 0 KOs) and pro-debuting heavyweight Doszhan Ospanov. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

No Holds Barred: Anais Ninja and Rat-A-Tat Kat of Gotham Girls Roller Derby
No Holds Barred: Anais Ninja and Rat-A-Tat Kat of Gotham Girls Roller Derby
http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-04-28T05_22_47-07_00
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two rookie skaters for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby (http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/), Anaïs Ninja (http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/girls/profile.php?player=anaisninja) of the Queens of Pain, and Rat-A-Tat Kat (http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/girls/profile.php?player=rat-a-tatkat) of the Bronx Gridlock.
The intraleague season opener for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby was held Saturday, April 25, at the Hunter College Sportsplex in Manhattan, New York, between the Bronx Gridlock and the Queens of Pain. Da Bronx avenged their only loss of the 2008 season, which was to Queens in the 2008 league championship bout, by outscoring Queens by a comfortable margin, 121-78. These are two of the best individual teams in the U.S., as the Gotham Girls Roller Derby won the 2008 Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) (http://www.wftda.com/) national championship, and the Queens and Bronx teams were the best in the best league.
The halftime entertainment included an electrifying performance by world champion trick roper, performer, and singer Chris McDaniel (http://chrismcdaniel.net/), which drew a loud and enthusiastic reaction from this largely New York crowd.
Right after this game, we spoke with Anaïs Ninja and Rat-A-Tat Kat about their first official league games, why they have become derby girls, what the appeal of this sport is to them, and much more. Anaïs Ninja also told us about her transition from martial arts and boxing to roller derby.
Roller derby is considered by many to be the fastest-growing sport in America, so make sure to keep up with what is going on in this fun, sexy, and exciting sport. The next Gotham Girls Roller Derby game is Saturday, May 16, between the Brooklyn Bombshells and the Manhattan Mayhem, also at Hunter College in New York.

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we focus on the top fighters in boxing in the UK today. We compare where the careers of Joe Calzaghe, Junior Witter, Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton, David Haye, and Carl Froch were one year ago with where they are today. And we comment on the thrilling come-from-behind 12th-round TKO victory Carl Froch scored over Jermain Taylor this past Saturday night, April 25. Ricky Hatton, of course, will be facing Manny Pacquiao, regarded by most as the current pound-for-pound king, this coming Saturday night, May 2, in Las Vegas. This fight will take place at 140 pounds, where Hatton is presently regarded as the best fighter in the world. We spoke with a confident Ricky Hatton on a media conference call this past week to get his take on this fight. David Haye, the former cruiserweight champion who relinquished his belts in that division to move up to heavyweight, will get his wish for a crack at a heavyweight title when he faces the top fighter in that weight class, Wladimir Klitschko, June 20 in Germany. David Haye was in New York this past week for a news conference, and we caught up with him there for some very poignant comments.
