No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro Previews 2009 Mundials and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship
http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-06-03T16_27_44-07_00
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with our colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), and a correspondent on our show.
Our main topic is the 2009 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship (http://www.ibjjf.org/mundial2009registration.htm), also known as the Mundials, which take place Thursday, June 4, through Sunday, June 7, at the Pyramid at California State University Long Beach.
We also discuss the recently completed West Coast Trials for the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship (http://www.adcombat.net/adnet/Wrestling/), and the East Coast Trials (http://www.adccusa.com/), which take place the weekend of June 13-14 at J. Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. These Trials are qualifiers for 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, which takes place the weekend of September 26-27 in Barcelona, Spain.
In a lengthy interview, we discuss who will compete at these events and who are the favorites to win. We go through the history and significance of these events. We also analyze what they need to do in order to advance to the next level of popularity among the legions of grappling, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and combat sports aficionados around the world. And as always, we highlight the many benefits and positive values grappling and jiu-jitsu offer to both their competitors and fans.
Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

Team Ruiz officially files petition with WBA demanding purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III
LAS VEGAS– Team Ruiz has filed an official petition with the World Boxing Association asking that heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev be stripped of his “Champion In Recess” status and demanding an immediate purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III to be held by August 30 for the World Boxing Association heavyweight title.
Two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) is the WBA mandated Official Challenger for WBA heavyweight champion Valuev.
Team Ruiz’ petition stated, “As you are aware Ruslan Chagaev has been medically disqualified from participation in the fight against Valuev. According to the express ruling of the WBA on this issue he must accordingly be stripped of any title and Valuev must be ordered to fight John Ruiz, the Official Challenger before August 30, 2009.
“For the record John Ruiz is ready, willing and able to fulfill his obligations as the Official Challenger within the time dictated by Championship regulations, and he demands that no decision regarding this issue be made unless he has an opportunity to be heard by the Championship Committee, unless it is to order a purse bid for the bout between he and Valuev no later than August 30, 2009.”
WBA ruling dated Feb. 2, 2009.
Relating to Chagaev’s obligation to fight Valuev: (par. C, p. 3)
"If Chagaev should incur another injury or other impediment that would prevent him from defending against the Champion, he will vacate whatever title he may hold and will be correspondingly lowered in his ranking."
“I’m ready to go,” Ruiz said. “I’ve been in the gym working hard because I knew something like this would happen. The WBA has to stand by its rules and order a purse bid for Valuev to fight me for the WBA heavyweight title and strip Chageav. This is the third time he hasn’t been able to fight for one reason or another. In baseball he’d be out. How many chances is the WBA going to give this guy? I wish they’d let the fighters in-line for a title shot know, so we’d all have a better idea about when somebody else will be fighting for that title.”
“According to the WBA’s specific rulings,” Ruiz attorney and advisor Anthony Cardinale explained, “it’s over for Chagaev as ‘Champion In Recess.’ Chagaev was medically unable to engage in this fight (vs. Valuev) and the WBA ruling stated he would lose his status if he was unable to fight - no excuses. The WBA mandatory rules revert back and Valuev has to make a mandatory defense by August 30, 2009. The WBA heavyweight title can’t be held hostage. It’s obvious that unsafe medical regulations in Germany regarding Chagaev’s medical condition do not apply anywhere else.”

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Liborio of American Top Team on Art of War 12
No Holds Barred: Ricardo Liborio of American Top Team on Art of War 12
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the
fourth and final show in our series reviewing the historic Art of War
12 mixed martial arts card, which we covered live from Beijing, China,
Saturday, May 23, 2009.
For this show, we had the pleasure of having a lengthy discussion with
Ricardo Liborio, the founder and head instructor of the American Top
Team (http://www.americantopteam.com/) in Coconut Creek, Florida, and
the National Coach for USA Grappling, the grappling program of USA
Wrestling (http://themat.com/). This chat took place on an airplane
headed back from China to the U.S. following Art of War 12.
Liborio has been spending a lot of time on airplanes of late, arriving
in China directly from the Netherlands, where he was part of a crowd
of about 25,000 people who witnessed the May 16 It's Showtime (http://
www.itsshowtime.nl/) kickboxing card. That card was headlined by a
fight between two of the top heavyweights in K-1, Badr Hari and Semmy
Schilt, with Hari scoring a stunning knockout of Schilt in just 45
seconds of the first round.
So on our trip back from China, we had a lot of time to discuss many
topics. We spoke of the phenomenon of the It's Showtime card and
kickboxing in Europe, and the potential of kickboxing around the world
to grow as a sport. We analyzed the Art of War 12 card, and the
potential of the Art of War Fighting Championship (http://
mmachina.com) to grow and become one of the most popular mixed martial
arts promotions in the world. We evaluated the top fighters in Art of
War, including Wu Hao Tian and Rolles Gracie, and where they stand
right now as fighters and what their potential is, and much more.

Don King: ‘The WBA Should Strip Ruslan Chagaev’
Don King:‘The WBA Should Strip Ruslan Chagaev’
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—Boxing promoter Don King believes the World Boxing Association must strip Ruslan Chagaev of any claim to its heavyweight championship after the Finnish Boxing Federation reviewed blood tests and refused to allow Chagaev to participate in Saturday’s match against WBA champion Nikolai “Giant Russian” Valuev in Helsinki.
Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports states his position in a post at: http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_ylt=AlxFNu4ZKgQu0_WIeRyKYT.UxLYF?slug=ki-wbatitle060109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
“Unfortunately for Ruslan Chagaev, he has suffered from a number of different medical maladies that have prevented him from participating in matches since at least 2003,” King said. “Nobody was more familiar with his medical history than the boxer and his promoter, but they still refused to submit to multiple requests for blood tests from the Finnish Boxing Federation until late in the week before Saturday’s match. This was a risk they should not have taken. It resulted in the cancellation of a contest for the WBA heavyweight championship.”
Rumors have swirled regarding Chagaev’s health since at least 2003 when blood tests forced Chagaev to be taken off a card in Australia headlined by Kostya Tszyu vs. Jesse James Leija.
Chagaev’s German-based promoter, Universum, claims their fighter recovered from Hepatitis B in 2006, but the Finnish Boxing Federation, under whose rules Saturday’s match were governed, refused to allow the contest to take place in their jurisdiction for undisclosed medical reasons.
Chagaev won the WBA heavyweight championship by handing then-champion Valuev his first loss in 46 fights on April 14, 2007. While Valuev hasn’t lost since—and in February 2008 won a title eliminator for the right to face Chagaev in a rematch—the Uzbeki has yet to receive medical clearance to be licensed.
The rematch was to have first taken place on May 31, 2008, but Chagaev pulled out with what was described as a protracted virus infection. (In addition, Chagaev was unable to appear in a previously scheduled heavyweight unification match in September 2007 against then-World Boxing Organization titleholder Sultan Ibragimov due to undisclosed medical reasons only described by Universum as “an acute inflammation of the body.”)
Chagaev vs. Valuev II was re-scheduled for July 5, 2008, but Chagaev suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon 10 days prior to the fight on June 26. After discussions, the WBA announced revised rules whereby a titleholder can be considered “champion in recess” due to medical reasons for up to a year after sustaining a recognized injury. Hence, Valuev vs. Chagaev II was scheduled for the third time to take place last Saturday (May 30) in Helsinki.
“I wanted the WBA to strip Chagaev after the Achilles injury,” King said. “The WBA said ‘let’s make him champion in recess’ and I saw that they were simply trying to do everything they could to help this man. It wasn’t my first choice, but I understood it.”
“Now it is my job as co-promoter of Nikolai Valuev with my partners at Sauerland Event to point out that the WBA ruled Chagaev had until June 26 to face Valuev, and he did not accomplish this. The Finnish Boxing Federation rejected Chagaev for medical reasons, and the rules of the WBA clearly state that they recognize and respect the rules of the local governing authority wherever a match may take place—in this instance, Finland.”
King added, “I applaud the Finnish Commission for standing up for the health and welfare of the fighters. It goes beyond money; they chose health before wealth. I believe the WBA will do the right thing as well by announcing Nikolai Valuev as its undisputed heavyweight champion.”
“I don’t believe the WBA will ignore the objective, empirical proof presented by the Finnish Boxing Federation.”

“I don’t believe the WBA will ignore the objective, empirical proof presented by the Finnish Boxing Federation.”

No Holds Barred: Wu Hao Tian, Rolles Gracie, and Carlos Santos on Art of War 12
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the
second in our series of shows reviewing the historic Art of War 12
mixed martial arts card, which we covered live from Beijing, China,
Saturday, May 23, 2009.
We begin by commenting on some aspects of the international economic
situation which affect the growth of the Art of War Fighting
Championship (http://mmachina.com), in which the economy of China is
rising while those of the West and elsewhere are declining. We also
comment on some positive and helpful suggestions which have been made
to the Art of War Fighting Championship about making their fight
videos and information more available online.
Right after the Art of War 12 card concluded at the National Olympic
Sports Centre Gymnasium in Beijing, we had a chance to speak about
this card with Carlos Santos, the head coach of the Emirates Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu Team (http://emiratesone.blogspot.com/).
We spoke with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu star and now mixed martial arts
fighter Rolles Gracie of Brazil and the U.S. about his first round
victory over Baga Agaev of Russia on this card by rear naked choke.
And, at the postfight banquet, we spoke with the top star of this
show, the 22-year-old phenom from China, Wu Hao Tian, who defeated
Yutaka Kobayashi of Japan by TKO in the first round.

“Tank” Abbott & Jimmy Ambriz challenge Bob “The Beast” Sapp on Fight Engine web site
LAS VEGAS– The revolutionary www.fightengine.com state-of-the-art website has picked-up steam with the registration of the first “name” fighters, David “Tank” Abbott and Jimmy Ambriz, who have challenged combat fighting legend Bob “The Beast” Sapp through the site’s “KO The Pro” section.
Fight Engine is changing the way mixed-martial-arts fighters – professionals, amateurs and even neighborhood tough guys -- market themselves and develop strong fan bases.
The “KO the Pro” section is where top-level fighters post action videos as other fighters battle for selection in a “KO the Pro” match-up. The first “KO The Pro” features Sapp, one of the key advisors for www.fightengine.com.
Abbott and Ambriz are legitimate challengers, true fighter’s fighters who have never backed down from a good fight. They’ve been in the cage and ring with fighting monsters. The 6-0, 250-pound “Tank” fought in the UFC for nine years and he’s brawled with the likes of Frank Mir, Pedro Rizzo, Kimo Leopoldo, Vitor Belfort and Dan Savern. WCO and former King of the Cage champion Ambritz, all 6-0 and 315-pounds, has mixed it up with Josh Barnett, Jeff Monson and Ricco Rodriguez. Fans may checkout his trash talking video at www.fightengine.com.
FightEngine.com works with MMA fighters to gain International notoriety. Registered fighters from around the world, whether a veteran or novice, may post his or her video and challenge other registered fighters, allowing each participant to accept or deny challenges, as well as express their semi-uncensored opinions about any posted challenges.
Equally valuable is the opportunity for MMA fighters from around the world, even those under contract and prohibited from participating in Fight Engine’s “super card,” can still use the web site as a marketing tool to get an edge on the opposition and build fans bases. Smack talk is allowed, challenges encouraged, and the Babes of Fight Engine constantly drive traffic to the site.
Even fighters contractually prohibited from fighting in the FightEngine.com event can benefit from posting action videos instead of forcing fans to work their way through and around You Tube. Registered fighters may gauge their popularity through one web site, at one location, through www.FightEngine.com and its fan feedbacks.
Promoters and managers have a brand new way to scout talent and fans become real matchmakers, publicly criticizing video-posted fighters as well as arguing with other fans regarding which fighters they want matched against each other.
A non-discriminatory source providing male and female fighters, as well as ring girls, FightEngine.com also offers opportunities to gain invaluable exposure on its popular website. Promoters and managers have started closely monitoring fightengine.com to scout and discover their next street fighting prospects and future MMA stars.
For a few selected MMA fighters, Fightengine.com offers a unique opportunity to earn a guaranteed five-figure purse, sign a potential six-figure promotional contract, paid travel expenses and, in the not too distant future, hopefully, other life-changing benefits through membership.
Fans can get in on the action simply by registering on the website to become quasi-matchmakers, picking fighters they’d like to watch in matches, in addition to commenting about fights other spectators propose.
A thermometer can be found on the right-hand side of the website, which illuminates on a rising basis, according to the amount of registered fighters and, subsequently, fights will be arranged when the thermometer reaches its full apex.
See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

Pro-Am boxing card to rock historic Plymouth “Brawl At The Hall,” June 12 at Memorial Hall
PROVIDENCE– Pro boxing returns June 12 to Plymouth as Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) presents a rare pro-am card, “Brawl At The Hall,” at historic Plymouth Memorial Hall.
“Brawl At The Hall” is the second of four shows in “The Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor Fight Series,” scheduled in 2009 at Plymouth Memorial Hall and exclusively promoted by CES.
Iraqi War veteran Chris Traietti (7-2, 4 KOs), a light heavyweight from Quincy, is in the 6-round main event. U.S. Navy veteran and Plymouth firefighter, light heavyweight Benny “The Hornet” Lescarbeau (3-0, 3 KOs), is back fighting in front of his hometown fans.
Also on the undercard in 4-round bouts are light middleweight Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes (0-1), a Plymouth High graduate now fighting out of Marshfield, and a pair of pro-debuting boxers from Cape Cod, super middleweight Paul Gonsalves and heavyweight Jessie Barboza. Gonsalves, fighting out of Harwich, is a 2-time Southern New England Golden Gloves champion, while Barboza, of Barnstable, is a 3-time New England Golden Gloves title holder. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
Five amateur matches featuring some of the area’s top non-professionals are also scheduled on the “Brawl At The Hall” card.
“We’re excited to be back in beautiful Plymouth and hope that people will enjoy a mini-vacation there with CES,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “This will be one of the few pro-am shows ever held in Massachusetts. It’s so appropriate that an Iraqi War veteran (Chris Traietti), as well as a US Navy veteran and Plymouth firefighter (Benny Lescarbeau), are fighting on a card in ‘America’s Hometown,’ one of these most historic areas in this great country. We hope locals will support their fighters and tourists enjoy a different, entertaining night out after visiting Plymouth Rock, The Mayflower and so many other places of great interest in Plymouth.”

Alfredo Angulo
Here’s what I don’t get: HBO takes Alfredo Angulo, a guy who is no better than a tough, willing club fighter, and constructs a clunky narrative around him (even though he’s had an entirely unexceptional life—more the norm for a fighter than anything out of the ordinary), dolls this blue-collar worker up in a stupid dog collar (which totally nullifies the image they’re trying to build for him), affixes a racist stereotype to his promotional interviews (Mexican fighters are all willing to leave their hearts in the ring, apparently), doesn’t take into account the remote possibility that his opponent (a recent beneficiary of similar HBO star-building treatment, but jettisoned when he failed in his first bigtime slot) might actually beat him a non-fixed fight, and then gets him bumped off in his first major exposure fight.
Could anyone get it more wrong? Why can’t the guys at HBO tell when they don’t have a particularly good fighter in front of them? Last night, they featured this poor kid (who’ll now be summarily—and justifiably—discarded) and the athletic but clueless Andre Berto. Neither guy can fight at anywhere close to elite level. And neither ever will. I still can’t get over hearing the announcing team cautioning the audience not to expect Berto, a putative world champion, to be as good as the A-list fighters in the division. Why shouldn’t subscribers expect him to be? And if he isn’t, why use him? It’s not as if he’s an exciting fighter to watch.
Sometimes I think I take too many shots at HBO. But it’s hard for me to figure out how an organization with so much money and so many resources can have such poor instincts when it comes to their boxing development.See you at the Fights.

No Holds Barred: Todd Hester of Gladiator Magazine on Art of War 12
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the
third in our series of shows reviewing the historic Art of War 12
mixed martial arts card, which we covered live from Beijing, China,
Saturday, May 23, 2009.
Todd Hester, the veteran mixed martial arts and grappling journalist,
who first trained with the Gracies over 20 years ago, and covered the
first UFC live, was also in Beijing for Art of War 12. He is now the
editor and publisher of Gladiator Magazine (http://gladmag.com/), as
well as a correspondent on this show and an old friend and colleague.
We had a chance to speak with him at length while we were in Beijing.
We began with an interesting discussion about our observations about
China as a society, refuting some common misconceptions held primarily
in the West about it. We then reviewed the Art of War 12 card,
discussed star fighters Wu Hao Tian and Rolles Gracie, analyzed the
potential for the Art of War Fighting Championship (http://
mmachina.com) to become as popular and successful as the Pride
Fighting Championships were in their heyday, and much more.

MIKE JONES – LARRY MOSLEY TO BE STREAMED LIVE ON WWW.GOFIGHTLIVE.TV ON SATURDAY JUNE 6TH
PHILADELPHIA— Some have called him the best prospect in Boxing. One thing for sure is that he provides excitement and on Saturday night June 6th, Mike Jones will face his toughest test as he take on former amateur standout Larry Mosley in a much anticipated main event from Bally’s in Atlantic City and all the action from this terrific card can be seen live on www.gofightlive.tv at 7:30pm eastern for a low price of just $5.99
Jones, 26, is one of boxing’s hottest and most-avoided prospects. His 17-0 record includes 15 knockouts. He is ranked No. 10 in the world by the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 10 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 11 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
A pro since 2005, Jones won the vacant NABA title last summer when he knocked out Juliano Ramos, a Brazilian living in Boca Raton, FL, in six rounds at the New Alhambra in South Philadelphia.
Jones also has beaten Doel Carrasquillo, of Lancaster, PA; Israel “Pito” Cardona, of Hartford, CT, and Germaine Sanders, of Chicago, IL.
The Jones-Mosley title fight originally was scheduled for March 6 in Philadelphia, but Mosley withdrew six days prior when he injured his back in training. Jones knocked out late substitute Dairo Esalas, of Miami, FL, in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the Blue Horizon. More than 300 customers were turned away after the 1,346-seat building had been filled to capacity.
Prior to the Esalas fight, Jones K0d rugged Mexican Luciano Perez on Dec. 5 at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA. Jones also has boxed in Las=2 0Vegas, NV; Spokane, WA; Niagara Falls, NY, and Salamanca, NY.
Mosley, 29, has a 15-3-2 record, 6 K0s. This will mark his second trip to Atlantic City, where he K0d Alexis Divison, of Miami, FL, on Aug. 4, 2005.
Jones and Mosley boxed on the same card March 3, 2006, at the New Alhambra. Most ringside observers thought Mosley was unlucky to be held to a 12-round draw that night by Miguel Figueroa, of Camden, NJ. Jones K0d Chris Gray, of Miami, FL, in two rounds in his second pro fight on the undercard.
Mosley followed the draw with Figueroa by boxing another 12-round draw, this time with world-rated Golden Johnson in Houston, TX, Johnson’s backyard.
In his last fight Oct. 24 in Carbazon, CA, Mosley lost a unanimous 10-round decision in a solid fight to 18-year-old Mexican phenom Saul Alvarez, who is 24-0-1, 17 K0s. Scores were 96-94, 97-93, 99-91.
Undefeated super bantamweight Teon Kennedy, of North Philadelphia, will box Lucian Gonzalez, of Reading, PA, in the scheduled eight-round co-feature Saturday evening, June 6
Kennedy, 22, is coming off the toughest fight on his pro career, an eight-round victory over lefty Andre Wilson, of St. Joseph, MO, on March 6 at the Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia. In that fight, Kennedy suffered a cut left eye and the first knockdown of his career, but he bounced back to earn a split decision.
A pro since 2007, Kennedy is 12-0, 5 K0s, and ranked No. 12 by the United States Boxing Association (USBA) at 122 pounds.
Kennedy, the 2004 National Golden Gloves champion at 112 pounds, also has defeated Thomas Snow, of Washington, DC, and Castulo Gonzalez, of Lowell, MA.
Gonzalez, 25, comes to Atlantic City off a seventh-round TK0 loss to undefeated (14-0) Miguel Garcia, of Oxnard, CA. Gonzalez accepted the fight in Maywood, CA, on four days’ notice.
A pro since 2005, Gonzalez is 9-5-1, 1 K0.
Against common foes, Gonzalez and Kennedy each have beaten Arthur Parker, Castulo Gonzalez and Robert DaLuz.
“To have Mike Jones, who is a future star of boxing, and be able to broadcast a fight promoted by a Hall of Famer like Russell Peltz is an honor for us at www.gofightlive.tv”, said David Klarman if www.gofightlive.tv
“Mike Jones is a dynamic fighter and when you combine him with Teon Kennedy plus a battle of undefeated fighters such as Mundy and Majewski, June 6th looks to be one of the best shows we have had on gofightlive and this is a cant miss show considering we are showing eight fights for such a low price.”

Tomasz Adamek to Defend IBF World Cruiserweight Title vs. Hackensack’s Bobby Gunn Saturday, July 11th at Newark’s Prudential Center
Totowa, New Jersey— The “Main Event Boxing Series” brings world championship boxing back to Newark’s Prudential Center on Saturday, July 11th as World IBF Cruiserweight Champion Tomasz “Goral” Adamek of Jersey City puts his title on the line against popular Hackensack Cruiserweight Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn, promoters Main Events and Ziggy Promotions announced today.
Also slated to appear on the show are a quartet of unbeaten standouts, including Paterson Welterweight Henry Crawford, (21-0); Morganville, N.J.’s promising middleweight prospect Denis “The Momma’s Boy” Douglin, (2-0, 2 KO’s) and undefeated Polish standouts Piotor Wilczewski, (22-0, super middleweight) and 13-0 cruiserweight Mateusz Masternak.
In his previous two appearances at “The Rock,” Adamek, (37-1, 25 KO’s) thrilled his legion of fans with his non-stop action packed performances. In December of 2008, Adamek took the IBF Cruiserweight title and earned recognition as the linear “Ring Magazine” Cruiserweight Titlist, when he knocked down Philadelphia’s Steve Cunningham twice to rock the house with a breathtaking upset victory that was cited for “Fight of the Year” honors. Two months later the native of Zywiec, Poland successfully defended his title against Jonathan Banks of Detroit’s famed Kronk Gym before a house full of partisan fans with a blistering eighth round knockout.
Adamek promises his fans more of the same when he takes the ring on July 11th. “I love performing in front of my fans at Prudential Center in Newark,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back there in July and give them another good show.”
“I’m over the moon,” the hard punching Gunn (21-3, 18 KO’s) said when he learned that the bout was made. “I’m going to make everyone proud of me. Just wait and see. I am so excited.”
A Fan Festival will be held outside Prudential Center at Entry Plaza, Edison and Mulberry Streets prior to doors opening, time TBA. Food, beverages and music.

Team Ruiz demanding purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III
LAS VEGAS– Upon today’s announcement that Valuev-Chagaev II has been canceled, Team Ruiz is demanding an immediate purse bid in order for Valuev-Ruiz III to be held by August 30 for the World Boxing Association heavyweight title.
Two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) lost to Valuev last August 30th in Berlin by 12-round split decision. Team Ruiz petitioned the WBA for a variety of reasons regarding the conduct of the fight and in response to the appeal, the WBA declared Ruiz as its mandatory challenger for the winner of the Valuev-Chagaev title fight scheduled for this weekend in Finland.
“Enough is enough,” Ruiz said. “Chageav has never fulfilled his obligation to fight mandatory defenses. German promoters have gotten their way with the WBA in the past, but the WBA has to do the right thing – strip him of his title and drop him from the ratings. I knew something would happen because he is either injured or it’s something else where he doesn’t fight. That’s why I’ve been working so hard at the gym in Las Vegas to get ready. I’m glad that this situation will finally be settled and I’ll be fighting for the title.”
Team Ruiz believes the consistent rumor that Chagaev has Hepatitis B was the reason he failed his medical exam, noting that since the rumors began, Chagaev hasn’t fought outside of his home-base in Germany.
“We believe Chageav’s ‘Champion in Recess’ is now completely meaningless,” Ruiz’ advisor Anthony Cardinale explained. “He last fought for the WBA title in April of 2007 and he owed Valuev a mandatory when he got hurt last year. Now this has occurred and he should be stripped of that title and removed from its rankings. If the rumors are true, where can he fight outside of Germany, and how was he even allowed to fight there? Valuev hasn’t defended his title since August 30, 2008 and John is the mandatory challenger.
“The WBA ruled that, no excuses, Chageav had to engage in this fight or he would be stripped of his ‘Champion In Recess’ title. The WBA is legally obligated to follow its ruling in this regard. Without this ‘Champion In Recess’ nonsense, Valuev is obligated by WBA rules to defend the title against the mandatory challenger – John is the WBA mandatory challenger -- before August 30, 2009, which is why we’re asking the WBA to set-up an immediate purse bid so the fight can occur in a timely fashion. ”

Don King Calls for the World Boxing Association to Declare Nikolai Valuev As Its Undisputed Heavyweight Champion
NEW YORK— Boxing promoter Don King has asked the World Boxing Association to declare Nikolai “Giant Russian” Valuev its undisputed heavyweight champion after Saturday’s match between Valuev and WBA “champion in recess” Ruslan Chagaev at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, was cancelled.
“The World Boxing Association should act swiftly and unequivocally to designate Nikolai Valuev as its undisputed heavyweight champion,” King said from New York just before boarding a plane bound for Helsinki where he will make his case in person. “Nikolai has been patient in waiting for Chagaev to become medically fit to fight. We applaud the WBA for making every effort to allow Chagaev to return, but it is clear now that we must move on.”
Valuev and then-WBA heavyweight champion Chagaev were scheduled to meet on July 5, 2008, but Chagaev was unable to fight after rupturing his left Achilles’ tendon. The WBA subsequently named Chagaev champion in recess and allowed Valuev and John Ruiz to fight for the WBA heavyweight championship on Aug. 30, 2008—a fight Valuev won by decision.
King is scheduled to arrive in Helsinki on Saturday morning at 8:50.

Yvel wants to put Rizzo to sleep Lashley-Sapp headlines June 27MMA PPV show in Biloxi, MS
BILOXI, Miss. – Dutch knockout artist Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel has relocated to the United States and plans to put his June 27th opponent, 3-time UFC heavyweight title challenger Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo, to sleep in the “Ultimate Chaos” co-feature live on pay-per-view from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (3-0-0) headlines against K1 and PRIDE combat fighting legend Bob “The Beast” Sapp (10-4-1) on “Ultimate Chaos, presented by Prize Fight Promotions and Fight Force International, in association with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum, Treasure Bay Casino and Budweiser.
“Ultimate Chaos” is being produced and distributed by Gotham MMA and Integrated Sports at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States and Canada on cable and satellite Pay Per View via iNDemand, TVN, DirecTV, Bell TV, Shaw, Star Choice and Viewer’s Choice for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.
Yvel (35-13-1) has stopped 30 of his 35 victims but he has fought only once in the United States, losing this past January to highly-rated heavyweight star Josh Barnett on “Affliction’s – Day of Reckoning.”
“I used to fight in Europe and Japan,” Yvel said. “It was okay, but I’m now living and fighting in a place where fighting is so big, the United States. This is the beginning of a new career for me. I’m a fighter and, in my opinion, takedowns are BS. I don’t want to fight on the ground. I believe there should be one man left standing and the other asleep. If both fighters are still standing, to me, it’s like a draw. I want to win by knockout, not points.
“Pedro used to train in Holland where I’m from and I know a little bit about him. I hope we have a stand-up fight but he’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu and if he’s smart, he’s going to take me to the ground. I hope he fights standing up so I can knock him out.”
Yvel, who won seven straight matches before losing to Barnett, has stopped top fighters such as Valentijn Overseem, Cheick Kongo, Carlos Barreto, Gary Goodridge, Kiyoshi Tamura and Brian Dunn. Gilbert’s career, however, has been surrounded by controversy due to three losses by disqualification.
“Everybody makes mistakes,” Yvel explained. “I don’t live in the past and that was years ago. Every day is new and I’m training to fight to my full potential. I’m a real fighter, the type fans want to see. I’m just being myself. I just want to go in there and hurt somebody. I’m the guy the American public has been waiting for. I bring something new into the cage or ring.”
Always dangerous lightweight Din “Dinyero” Thomas (24-8-0), star of The Ultimate Fighter 4, takes on former King Of The Cage and Gladiator Challenge champion Javier “Showtime” Vasquez (12-2-0), while Canadian lightweight sensation Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (12-1-0) meets 4-time World Muay Thai champion William “The Bull” Sriyapai (12-4-0)
Also fighting on the card are welterweights Brett Cooper (9-4-0) vs. Waachiim “Native Warrior” Spirit Wolf (5-4-0), Affliction vice president Tom Atencio (1-0-0) vs. pro debuting lightweight Randy Hedderick, middleweight James Orso (8-3-0) vs. Colby McMahan (3-1-0), The Ultimate Fighter 3 star Danny Abbadi (3-4-0) vs. veteran middleweight Lance Thomson (4-2-0); welterweight Eric Bradley (2-1-0), 2-time All-America wrestler and 2003 NCAA boxing champion at Penn State, vs. Belfast, Northern Ireland brawler Colin McKee (3-2-0). All fights and fighters are subject to change.See you at the Fights.
