No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with "King" Mo Lawal.

"King" Mo, of course, has been in the news a lot recently. On Thursday, it was officially announced that he had signed a deal to fight in the Bellator Fighting Championships MMA company, where he will start fighting in their light heavyweight tournament scheduled for January 2013, as well as perform for the TNA pro "wrestling" company.

After a hectic day of interviews, meetings, and a media conference call, we caught up with "King" Mo right after his last appearance late Thursday night, May 10. We then hit some of New York's best night spots: Jimmy's Corner, owned by the legendary boxing trainer Jimmy Glenn, where he had a soft drink, and Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar, where he had a soft drink and dinner, along with our colleague and correspondent Keisha Morrisey and Darryl Satcher. Finally, at about 3 AM Friday, we sat down to record an interview.

"It's been a rollercoaster ride of a year, and now we're back to the top, top of the ride," said "King" Mo in this interview. He said that he will be training in TNA's developmental group with Al Snow. "Maybe some of the moves that he teaches from the catch wrestling I can apply to MMA," said Mo.

He also expressed support for Bellator's tournament format, where contenders first have to win an eight-man, three-month tournament to earn a title shot. "I feel the best way to find out is deserving of a title shot is through a tournament," he said.

We also discussed the issue of drug testing, about which he said he is open to any type of drug testing, already having been a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for many years, where state-of-the-art drug testing is done. And we discussed more on his participation in the Bellator light heavyweight tournament, his training for MMA while performing in TNA at the same time, his desire to return to the Sugar Bar and Jiimmy's Corner when he next visits New York, and more.

WBF Doubleheader in Hungary‏

WBF Doubleheader in Hungary

Tibor Feja and his Feja Promotion is staging a major WBF doubleheader on
Saturday May 12 in Budapest, Hungary, featuring an interesting female
world title defense, and two local boxers clashing for the vacant
Intercontinental Super Middleweight strap.

World Boxing Federation women’s World Bantamweight Champion Renata
Szebeledi, 15-9 (8), is making the first defense of her title against
tough Romanian Eva Marcu, 7-3 (2), in a rematch.

The two fought last June, with Szebeledi coming out on top after a rough
encounter, and now Marcu will get her chance at redemption and her first
world championship.

In her first bout after defeating Marcu last year, Szebeledi travelled to
Germany to capture the WBF World title with an inspired performance
against local favorite Pia Mazelanik. Since then she has racked up three
non-title victories, before dropping a close decision in an IBF Super
Flyweight challenge against Simona Galassi in Italy. Now back at her
natural weight, Szebeledi is looking forward to defending her world
championship in front of her local fans, and with Marcu coming off a fresh
victory last month she is sure to be in for another hard challenge.

In the second WBF title fight of the night, Budapest-rivals Attila Baran,
9-2 (4), and Janos Olah, 10-8-1 (3), will duke it out for the vacant
Intercontinental Super Middleweight championship. Both have mixed in minor
championship territory in their careers, but Baran (19) has youth on his
side, while Olah (30) is the more experienced and tested.

It shapes up to be an interesting night of championship boxing in Budapest
on May 12, and while Szebeledi and Baran must be considered slight
favorites, it is bound to be competitive action in both fights.

The show is promoted by Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions.

Pierson of Paterson, New Jersey has a record of 11-2 with eight knockouts and is coming off an impressive fourth round stoppage over durable Charles Hayward on April 18th at The Robert Treat Hotel.

An outstanding undercard is being assembled that will feature some of the best prospects and most popular fighters in the tri-state area.

In the six round co-feature, Bantamweight Qa’Id “Kid Dynamite” Muhammad will see action.

Muhammad, 7-0 with six knockouts is one of the best prospects in the lower weight divisions.

Also seeing action in separate six round bouts will be Lightweight Nicky Demarco (4-2, 2 KO’s) of Staten Island, NY; Jr. Middleweight Tommy Rainone (17-4, 4 KO’s); Heavyweight John Lennox (10-1, 5 KO’s)

Team USA’s Marcus Browne Qualifies for the 2012 Olympic Games with a Quarterfinal Win in Brazil

Light heavyweight Marcus Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) officially qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games with a quarterfinal victory at the Americas Qualifier in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday afternoon.

Browne is the first American boxer to qualify at the event, which features the top boxers from north, central and south America. The 21-year-old took on the Dominican Republic’s Felix Valera in the light heavyweight quarterfinal contest. Knowing the high stakes, Browne grabbed control of the bout early and enjoyed a 7-2 lead after the first round. The pace slowed over the next two rounds with Browne taking a 9-3 advantage into the last three points. He held on to his lead in the final round to win a 12-6 final decision and a light heavyweight berth in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Browne, who began boxing at the age of 13 after following a friend to the boxing gym, was one of the three Olympic Trials winners competing in the Americas Qualifier in Rio de Janeiro. He fell just short of qualifying internationally at the 2011 World Championships, but stayed focused on his Olympic dream despite the obstacle.

“Well it’s been a long road, but I finally got to where I wanted to with sacrifice and hard work,” Browne said. “I just want to thank all of the people who stood behind me through thick and thin. I can’t wait to get home and get focused on winning the gold in London.”

A product of the Atlas Cops N Kids gym in Staten Island, N.Y., and trained by Gary Stark, Sr., Browne is a two-time National PAL Champion the 2012 USA Boxing National Champion. A southpaw noted for his strong punching power, Browne recorded first round stoppages in his opening bouts at both the 2011 World Championships in Azerbaijan and his Americas Qualifier first round contest in Brazil.

He will represent the United States in the same weight class as the most recent U.S. Olympic gold medalist, Andre Ward, when he takes the ring in London. In 2008, the United States did not have a light heavyweight representative as Christopher Downs failed to qualify.

With Browne’s win, the United States has four boxers qualified for London with the light heavyweight joining flyweight Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), bantamweight Joseph Diaz, Jr. (S. El Monte, Calif.) and welterweight Errol Spence (Desoto, Texas).

Light welterweight Jamel Herring (Coram, N.Y.) will look to bring the total to five when he takes the ring against Yoelvis Hernandez of Venezuela at approximately 6:45 p.m. ET.

"Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto" Post-Fight Quotes

Floyd Mayweather; Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion

“Tonight we gave the fans what they wanted to see. We matched the best with the best. Cotto was a very tough competitor and he won some rounds. He pushed me to the limits and this is what it’s all about.

“Miguel Cotto fought his ass off tonight and I want to congratulate him and his team.

“You’ve seen me in flashy cars, but I want you to know that I do give back to the community. This is what it’s all about. It’s not about making a lot of money. It’s about giving back.

“I don’t want be on TV and not give you guys [the fans and media] what you deserve.

“Cotto is a good puncher. He didn’t win more than 30 fights for nothing. I was the first fighter to fight him at a weight that he was comfortable with. I actually came into the fight weighing 147.

“Things happened tonight and we both had to fight. But the main thing is that we got the victory.

“I think tonight was a cool fight. The fans were happy. It’s about impressing fans and giving them what they want to see.

“I sensed that sometimes Miguel was breaking down and then he would come back sharp. Miguel Cotto is in shape. The right hook and the uppercut were working for me tonight. I had watched tapes of Shane Mosley [when he fought Cotto] and I saw that the right hook was working. And I also watch Zab Judah use the uppercut against him too. So I knew I was going to use those shots tonight.

“I knew the right hook was going to be my money shot. A lot of times and these days you don’t see fighters using the right hook, only the left. But tonight I wanted to use the right hook and that is what I did.

“Tonight I got a few bumps and bruises, but that is part of the sports.

“I could have made it a very easy fight, but I was going for the knockout. Cotto was in tremendous shape. He was tough.

“Our game plan is always to win. Cotto surprised me and his record reflects where he is today.

“It’s about winning and that’s what I did. I’m not going to fold to pressure. Cotto can keep his head high as we are both winners tonight in our own way.”

Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“Floyd fought a fight that you guys hadn’t seen in some time. We knew coming into the fight that preparation was the key. He was pushed and he had to come out and fight hard.

“Cotto never gave up. The fans were going really wild.

“Miguel Cotto is probably one of the classiest guys in the sport of boxing. I would like to give him, his team and Gaby a lot of credit.

“What can I say but another one down.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“What I noticed with Floyd is that people are more appreciative of him and realize that he comes to fight. To see him come in tonight with Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and 50 Cent is really great for the sport of boxing.

“Beside his amazing skills, Floyd brings amazing numbers to the pay-per-view sales

“Floyd Mayweather is a rock star. He really is.”
