THOMPSON BOXING PROMOTIONS TIDAL WAVE HITS THE SOUTHWEST WITH A TRIPLE THREAT THIS FRIDAY, JULY 20!!!
A massive Thompson Boxing Promotions tidal wave hits the Southwest as three different fight cards from the Orange County-based company will take place on Friday, July 20, from Laughlin, Nevada to Santa Ynez and Ontario, California.
A regional title fight between Mexican contenders Juan Carlos Burgos and Cesar Vazquez erupts at the Edgewater Casino in Laughlin, a lightweight collision betweenMiguel Acosta and Art Hovhannisyan will be the main event at Chumash Casino, and Charles Huerta faces Eduardo Arcos in a junior lightweight main event from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.Few promoters have ever dared this feat.
Tijuana, Mexico's Burgos (29-1, 19 KOs) has proven several times that he's capable of winning a world title and seeks to prove it against equally impressive Cesar Vazquez (25-0, 16 KOs) of Mexicali, Mexico in an expected war for junior lightweight supremacy. Both will be battling for the WBO Latino junior lightweight title in Laughlin, Nevada. ESPN2 will televise the event along with a semi-main event pitting East L.A.'s Aron Martinez (17-1-1, 4 KOs) against Prenice Brewer (16-2-1, 6 KOs) in an expected welterweight war. The event is co promoted by Art Pelullo's Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions.
North of Santa Barbara, CA, former world champion and lightweight contenderMiguel Acosta (29-5-2, 23 KOs) of Venezuela battles Glendale, California's Art Hovhannisyan (14-0-2, 8 KOs) in the main event at Chumash Casino in picturesque Santa Ynez. The boxing main event will be televised live on SHOWTIME's ShoBox: The New Generation and it's promoted by Gary Shaw Productions in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions.
Further south, Thompson Boxing's newly signed, Charles Huerta (16-3, 9 KOs)heads a list of outstanding Southern California prizefighters appearing at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. The popular Paramount prizefighter always brings his caravan of fans. But it won't be easy against the always-dangerous junior lightweightEduardo "Latigo" Arcos (16-7-1, 13 KOs) in the main event set for eight rounds. Don't count out Tijuana's Arcos. Any time he connects it's for good.
Allentown's Miguel Diaz (8-0, 3 KOs) returns to the Ontario faces Evaristo Primero (15-14-1, 7 KOs) in an eight round bout. Despite living in Pennsylvania the hard punching Diaz has become an Inland Empire fan favorite with his aggressive style. Primero has faced the best. Will his experience be too much for Diaz?
It's Colombia versus Mexico when Daulis Prescott (24-1, 18 KOs) fights Pablo Torres (6-4-2, 5 KOs) in a featherweight bout. Prescott is the younger brother of Breidis Prescott who knocked out Amir Khan several years back. Both Prescott brothers wield serious firepower. Torres also has a punch. All of his wins have come via knockout.
Rigoberto Flores (4-1, 2 KOs) of Northridge, Calif. meets Hector Garza (3-6, 2 KOs) of Texas in a six round junior welterweight contest. Flores is making his sixth appearance at the Doubletree and must deal with left-handed Garza. Lefties are puzzling for everyone.
In other fights Sylmar's Sergio Nuñez (6-0-1, 4KOs) fights Houston's Jesus Mendez (3-2, 2 KOs) in a junior lightweight clash. San Pedro's junior bantamweightIsaac Zarate (3-0) opposes Corpus Christi's Jeremy Longoria (3-1, 1KO).
San Diego's junior welterweight Giovanni Santillan (2-0, 1KO) meets Laredo'sAlberto Espinoza (1-1).
Tickets for the "Path to Glory" card are priced at $74, $45 and $30 and may be purchased by calling: 714-935-0900. Bouts subject to change. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the first bell rings at 7:45 pm. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 North Vineyard Avenue in Ontario. The hotel phone number is 909-937-0900.
It's a triple-header for Thompson Boxing Promotions just take your pick, make the drive and set your DVR!

Tune into “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch Terry Moran’s full interview.
Former boxing heavyweight champ Mike Tyson said his role in “The Hangover,” the hit 2009 film about three groomsmen and their drunken Vegas debauchery, actually helped him become sober and get his life back on track.
Tyson, who has had three stints in rehab for substance abuse, said he was still in a “dark place” when the movie was filming. But after it came out, he said one day he was swarmed by a tour group full of kids, who hugged him and asked him all sorts of questions about his “Hangover” performance, in which he played himself as the owner of a stolen white Bengal tiger.
“That changed everything for me, which I’m so appreciative,” Tyson, 46, said. “That was just some good stuff.”
In a brutally honest interview with “Nightline” anchor Terry Moran, Tyson opened up about his turbulent past, dealing with substance abuse and moving forward. The champ said he has been sober for over three years now, but still grapples with his demons every day.
“I’m just constantly working on turning. It doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. “I may have a good few years in me but it’s still not out of me. You still have to work consistently. Every moment of the day you have to work because your demons always — that’s who you are.”
Tune into “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch Terry Moran’s full interview.
After years of reigning supreme in the boxing ring, Tyson’s career has been marked by struggle and heartache. Tyson served a three-year sentence in the ’90s for a rape conviction, a crime he still denies he committed.
“I didn’t do that,” Tyson said. “I’m never going to say I did something I didn’t do… I’m just so happy that it’s over.”
The champ’s boxing career then suffered another major blow in 1997 when he bit off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a fight. He has been married three times, and has sought treatment for his issues with drugs and alcohol abuse.
“Being in rehab, that kicks you’re a–,” he said. “If you really trying to do this thing and you have your demons still banging on you and you want to do the right thing, this is kicking you’re a–, it’s kicking you’re a–, I don’t care how tough you are… it’s killing you but you have to do it.”
Then in 2009, Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter Exodus Tyson died in a treadmill accident at her home in Phoenix, a devastating loss that still pains the champ today.
“I’m traumatized,” he said. “But I know if I dwell on it, I’ll be a psychopath.”
Tyson now has two young children with his third wife Lakiha Spicer. He is on a vegan diet and said he is “constantly working” on turning over a new leaf.
From the boxing ring to center stage, Tyson is about to embark on a new adventure on Broadway — a one-man show about his life called, “Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth,” directed by Spike Lee. The show will run six times between July 31 and Aug. 5.
“I like to describe it as me just being naked onstage, not physically naked, but just naked spiritually and emotionally onstage,” Tyson said.
But despite all the good that has come to him in recent years, the champ said he believes he could still fall off the wagon.
“I have to always believe it can happen to prevent it from even going in that direction,” he said. “I’m so weak… [but] I see my faults, I know my flaws, I know my faults, and I’m dealing with those issues in my life to improve my life.”
Tune into “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch Terry Moran’s full interview.

Jorge Paez Jr vs Omar Chavez, a long waited rematch Saturday July 21st
HOOK TO THE LIVER By José Sulaimán;The conversion of the Baddest Man on Earth
July 17, 2012 – Mexico City.
From the office of WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán:
The following is one of the weekly “Hook to the Liver” columns by WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán that are published in El Universal every Sunday. From July 15, translated from Spanish:
HOOK TO THE LIVER
By José Sulaimán
The conversion of the Baddest Man on Earth
A moment in our lives comes when fragrance, music, taste, old photos, make us remember times long gone, about beautiful places where you ate a certain food, danced with someone that you enjoyed. A smell that makes you remember long-gone loves, but which have gone away forever. The presence in Mexico of the boxing destroyer Mike Tyson took me to countless mementos that make me live again the thrills and emotions of past boxing
The opening press conference in Mexico City had as many cameras as I had seen in a long, long time. It brought me back to a long time ago day when my dear friend, the late Jim Jacobs, brought to me a video showing the future bomber, even more than Joe Louis, he said, with his 18 KOs in the first round of his first 18 fights. I was impressed, but recommended Jim to keep him fighting to really become what he said.
A few years later, Don King came as his new promoter and Jim's associate, to give him the opportunity to fight champion Trevor Berbick for the WBC heavyweight world title. Tyson became the youngest heavy weight champion of the world at 20 years of age.
A kid, an orphan, and in jail since he was 14, received a gift from God with the coming of Cus D'Amato as his trainer. D'Amato could not enjoy his boy becoming champion, as he passed away about a year before. That evening, Tyson went all over the hotel, casinos, lobbies, and more, wearing his WBC green and gold belt. The following day, with the style of Don King, Tyson was crowned, yes, he received a diamond crown that Muhammad Ali and I gave him, embarrassing for me, the red robe of a king. That night the poor child jumped from poverty to a first step to become one of the greatest of all time.
The day came when he set the highest income in sports by winning more than $30 million in only a little more than the one minute when he defeated Michael Spinks, who stayed on the canvas as long as the fight lasted. Some said that Mike did it out of his outrage caused by Butch Lewis, my late dear friend, for making him wrap his hands twice. It is impossible to ever forget that little piece of Evander Holyfield's ear, which fell to the canvas very close to where I was sitting, after two bites on the ear from Tyson. Nobody in the arena or on TV could explain what had happened. Tyson was desperate for the many head butts from Evander, without any action from the referee. Tyson showed that night what he always claimed: that he was the baddest man on earth.
During the last WBC convention in Las Vegas, I asked Evander to present Mike with his Lifetime Boxing Excellency Award, that he hesitantly presented, while those two boxing barbarians hugged amicably with esteem and mutual respect, an example of what boxing is. What would I give for politicians and promoters doing the same…
How can I forget the savage knockout of Larry Holmes, also one of the greatest ever. I was sad to see that, but it was the punishment that life gives to all those that don’t understand when their cycle of glory is gone. It also happened to Joe Louis, Ali, Ray Leonard, J.C. Chavez, and so many, many others, including Tyson himself.
Tyson, in his prime, married an artist who pushed him into decline, a real drama of someone born in a humble bed, reaching the skies and being dropped mercilessly by one he loved. The same happened when he was blatantly discriminated against by an all-white jury who sent him to jail for the accusation of sex abuse of a girl who went late at night to his room in a hotel — like, for an autograph?
He could not mentally accept the actions of his first wife, and later going to jail. The life of that extraordinary fighter who always had sold-out arenas, who provoked passion and excitement with the power of his fists, with the cheering of his race and the discrimination of others, fell all the way down in the deepest of vices and disgrace. It looked as if the great Mike Tyson was following the path of most fighters who are born in the humblest of beds: to reach glory, money, and beautiful women, then to fall after the lights of their career are off into poverty, hunger, pity, and only dreaming in nostalgia with tears of their times of glory.
But no, Mike Tyson flew from his ashes again into the world, after finding a gracious new wife who has led him away from the dirt to send him back to live in glory. A new Mike Tyson, representing still the greatness of his career in boxing, but now into the lives of those who get up from the canvas and continue their lives struggling for being good, and with success. I will leave the life of this man, whose life I lived very close to during all of his career with his ups and downs, as an example for the young of the world of how to struggle to leave the night behind and move into being someone to follow with his deeds of a good man, carrying with pride his life, like a diamond in boxing, to leave an indelible mark of his passing through life.
Mexico received him in victory with millions of flashes, the applause and admiration that he has always had from Mexicans. Mauricio and I took him to the airport with a feeling of being so proud of the man that once was the baddest man on earth, to one who today is a good human being with a history of glory.
Thank you for reading my thoughts.

Mexican Boxing Sensation Canelo Alvarez To Face Breakout Star Josesito Lopez In "Knockout Kings" Quadruple-Header Sept 15 @ MGM Grand live on SHOWTIME
Mexican Independence Day weekend will come alive in one-of-a-kind fashion on Saturday, September 15 when "Knockout Kings" featuring undefeated Mexican sensation Canelo Alvarez taking on boxing's breakout star and upset-minded Josesito Lopez for Canelo's World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Welterweight World Championship, takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME. Fans can expect fireworks all night long with the unparalleled quadruple-header, which also features WBC Featherweight World Champion Jhonny Gonzalez defending his title against former World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon.
"Knockout Kings," a tremendous evening of pure Mexican power and pride, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. The quadruple-header will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be televised live on SHOWTIME. Additional co-featured fights will be announced soon.
SHOWTIME Sports will also produce a new edition of its ALL ACESS sports documentary series. ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Lopez will premiere on SHOWTIME, with multiple replays on additional SHOWTIME and CBS platforms. The exhibition schedule will be announced shortly.
"We know the exceptional talent we have in Mexican superstar Canelo, and certainly Josesito Lopez deserves the opportunity to face him after his stunning upset victory over Victor Ortiz on June 23," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. "It is going to be another prideful Mexican Independence Day weekend for Mexican and Mexican-American fans having their most celebrated fighter, Canelo, fighting that night along with Jhonny Gonzalez and Daniel Ponce De Leon, who are going to deliver their own electrifying championship battle."
"It is a great pleasure for Golden Boy Promotions to be working with MGM Resorts International and SHOWTIME Sports on this exciting night of boxing," said Richard Schaefer, CEO, Golden Boy Promotions. "To be able to showcase top-caliber boxing talent in Canelo, Josesito Lopez, Jhonny Gonzalez and Ponce De Leon on the same show packs a lot of power and pride into a tremendous evening for attendees and viewers watching at home. It's also a special gift for Mexican and Mexican American fans who have supported the sport for so long to have Canelo appear once again on Mexican Independence Day weekend. If there is anyone who deserves a shot at Canelo, it's Josesito because he showed that heart and will can determine the outcome of any fight. I've never seen a fighter show that."
"SHOWTIME has fully committed to promoting this tremendous night of boxing as if it were a pay-per-view, but instead is offering this quadruple-header to all boxing fans across the country," continued Schaefer. "We are very pleased that CBS will also be committed to promoting this event on various platforms."
"We are excited to be able to offer SHOWTIME subscribers a chance to see boxing's newest star, Canelo Alvarez, in what promises to be a dramatic fight," said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. "Canelo's talent and charisma has re-energized boxing and drawn legions of casual fans to the sport. Josesito Lopez may not be as well-known as Canelo, but he has already shown that it would be a mistake for any opponent to overlook Josesito Lopez. Many counted him out in his last fight against Victor Ortiz, but he stunned the SHOWTIME audience and boxing fans worldwide with his gutsy performance and earned his shot at Canelo. This match-up, and this entire card as a whole, promises to be non-stop action and we are proud to deliver explosive fights to our viewers."
Richard Sturm, president of sports and entertainment for MGM Resorts International, said, "We look forward to celebrating Mexican Independence Day weekend with one of the most exciting events of the summer. There is no doubt that Golden Boy Promotions will deliver a fight that has a major impact on boxing fans worldwide."
Already a phenom in his home country of Mexico, Canelo turned professional at the age of 15 and has amassed a record of 40-0-1, with 29 knockouts. Since 2008, he has knocked out 14 of 18 opponents and is coming off of a dominant unanimous decision win over future Hall of Famer and former Three-Division World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley in May. Now, the 21-year-old considered to be one of boxing's fastest-rising stars will make his SHOWTIME debut on Mexico's biggest holiday weekend of the year, Mexican Independence Day weekend. Canelo will look to continue his meteoric rise to international superstardom as he follows in the footsteps of De La Hoya, his childhood idol and current promoter.
"I am happy to be fighting Josesito Lopez on Mexican Independence Day weekend and to give all of our fans a tremendous battle," said Canelo. "I was ringside for his fight against Victor Ortiz and saw the talent he possesses. It will be very competitive, but nothing can take away my desire to be the best in the sport. I am also excited to be fighting for the Mexican people and Mexican American fans on Mexican Independence Day weekend. I look forward to showing so many people who will be watching me across the United States that I love being a champion. I want them to think of me as one of the greatest fighters ever."
In June, Lopez emerged from relative obscurity and scored the biggest win of his career over the heavily favored Ortiz in the main event of a SHOWTIME Championship Boxing. Lopez shocked the boxing world by stopping Ortiz, one of today's most popular and talented fighters. Lopez (30-4, 18 KO's) of Riverside, Calif., has the opportunity to recreate his "Rocky moment" on Sept. 15, when he challenges for his first world title against a man that many believe to be boxing's next superstar.
"I am so happy to have the chance to continue my career fighting another great champion in Canelo Alvarez especially on such a big weekend like Mexican Independence Day," said Lopez. "I know they put me in the ring with Victor Ortiz to have me beat and now they are doing the same thing with Canelo. I was a big underdog with Ortiz and now I'm a bigger underdog with Canelo, but I'm up for the challenge."
Also featured on the SHOWTIME telecast will be reigning Mexico City's Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KO's) who once ruled the bantamweight division with his iron fists, winning two world titles and defeating the likes of Fernando Montiel, Irene Pacheco and recently inducted Hall of Famer Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson. Reinventing himself at featherweight, where he has gone 12-0 with 11 knockouts, he won the WBC 126-pound title by stopping Hozumi Hasegawa in the fourth round in April 2011. Four title defenses, including an April 2012 decision over Elio Rojas, have followed, and on September 15, the 30-year old will seek a fifth successful defense against De Leon.
"This is a fight I have been wanting for a long time and now to have the opportunity to do it for my Mexican people is so great," said Gonzalez. "That is a big weekend for everyone and I am going to show the world why I am still the best in the division."
Power puncher Daniel Ponce De Leon (43-4, 35 KO's) has long been one of boxing's most dependable warriors. Former WBO Junior Featherweight World Champion De Leon defended his crown six times during his 2005-08 reign. After losing the title to Juan Manuel Lopez in 2008, he began the next chapter of his career, winning nine of his next 11 fights following that defeat. In 2012, wins over Omar Estrella (KO6) and Eduardo Lazcano (W10) at featherweight have put him in line for a shot at 126-pound gold, but to get it, he will have to beat countryman Gonzalez on the 15th of September.
"Gonzalez is a very good fighter, but I have the experience and ability to beat him and take his title from him," said De Leon. "The Mexican fans will all be watching and there is going to be tremendous pressure on all of us to win our bouts and look great doing it. I will become the new champion that night and my career will move up to a new level."

Henry "The Western Warrior" Coyle returns to the Royal Theatre, Castlebar on Friday, August 17th to make the first defence of his WBF Light Middleweight title against experienced Argentinean Marcelo Alejandro Rodriguez on another big night of professional boxing in County Mayo.
Coyle won the title when he stopped Italy's Elio Cotena last year in front of a packed audience at the Royal Theatre which included Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Sport Michael Ring and he will be hoping to recreate the electric atmosphere from that night as he bids to repel his South American challenger.
The card will also feature the return of Cavan's Andy Murray as he looks to get back to winning ways following his points defeat to European Champ Gavin Rees in Cardiff last year. Murray, like Coyle will face an Argentinian opponent in the shape of Sergio Omar Priotti.
Cork based Cuban Alexei Collado will also be out to impress as he aims to take a step closer to a world title challenge with his impressive undefeated record currently standing at 15 wins and all but one of those wins coming via stoppage.
The undercard will have plenty to interest local fight fans as well with an intriguing all Connaught middleweight clash between Galway's Alan Donnellan and Roscommon's Darren Cruise. Two Ballyhaunis boxers will punch for pay for the first time on the card – against each other as welterweights Michael Waldron andBrandon Peake face each other on their professional debuts in an all Mayo affair. Sligo's long time Irish amateur stalwart Stephen "Block" Reynolds is pencilled in for his second pro outing on the card in what promises to be a busy few weeks for the cruiserweight with his debut already set for Belfast later this month.
With that line up the Royal Theatre is expected to have another full house and Coyle knows that all eyes will be on him as he looks to make a successful first defence of the WBF Light Middleweight belt.
"Winning the WBF title was undoubtedly the highlight of my career to date," recalled Coyle. "To win the title in front of my own fans in Castlebar was a dream come true and I'll be looking to deliver a repeat performance next month. The support last time was massive, I've always had great support right throughout my career going back to my amateur days but that night was something special and hopefully we can do it all again next month."
The Geesala native knows he can't afford any slip ups against Rodriguez, a veteran of 79 pro fights with 43 knockouts on his resume. "I have to give credit to my opponent, he's coming all the way from Argentina and he's not coming for the weather, he's coming to take my title," said Coyle.
"He's a big puncher and very experienced. He has been in there with some of the best in the world and he's had over twice as many knockouts as I've had fights so I have to respect that. My Dad and my trainer Sam Colonna will watch some of his past fights and come up with the game plan and then it will be my job to implement it on the night."
Having made a flying visit home for today's press conference at McHale Park in Castlebar Coyle returns to his Chicago base this week to continue his training camp for the bout. Father and manager Gerry is confident that they can repeat the success of last years event. "I know that everyone who was there last year will be back again because we got so many message, calls, emails and text afterwards from people saying what an incredible night it was. We knew we had to run with it again and we are very grateful to the people of Mayo because they have been so supportive.
"The Royal Theatre is a wonderful venue for boxing, there isn't a bad seat in the house and the atmosphere the people of Mayo generated there last year had to be seen to be believed. We're delighted that Henry will be able to make the first defence of his title at home and we're very happy to be working with the World Boxing Foundation again. Henry will have his hands full with Rodriquez because he's vastly experienced and has travelled the world to fight some of the very best around but Henry got a good eight rounds under his belt in his last fight in Chicago last month and that will all stand to him as part of the preparations for next month."

PRIVATE SCREENING FOR NEW BOXING FILM ‘SPLIT DECISION’ ANNOUNCED FOR JULY 29 AT INDIESCREEN IN BROOKLYN
It was recently announced that a private screening for the short boxing film ‘Split Decision’ will be held at IndieScreen in Brooklyn on July 29. Created by film maker Antoine Allen, ‘Split Decision’ identifies with the struggles of a young bisexual Latina boxer dealing with the challenges inside the squared circle, while facing adversity and scrutiny outside of the ring based on her personal choices.
In ‘Split Decision’, Allen tells a story of a young woman’s dreams of rising up the ranks of a predominantly male sport, and the emotional roller coaster she embarks on to prove to her family and herself where hard work, perseverance and an unrelenting drive to succeed can take her, while balancing her unequivocal passion for boxing and a love for the sexes.
“I was working on a few scripts and since this was going to be my first production, I knew it had to be something everyone will remember,” said Allen about what prompted him to writing ‘Split Decision’. “So I came up with an underdog story, and watching Clint Eastwood’s amazing movie ‘Million Dollar Baby’ sparked the idea.”
The private screening will entail a viewing of ‘Split Decision’ as well as an intimate meet-and-greet with the cast and crew members of the film, including director Antoine Allen, who will be available for press interviews and to answer any questions about the film.
“After people watch this film, I want them to realize that you can go after your dreams in life,” said Allen. “You do not have to be afraid of who you are.”
New York native Antoine Allen had dreams like any other kid growing up. A little after his career started to develop in the music industry as A&R Representative/Manager for a couple of independent hip hop labels, the phrase "Dream Big or Don’t Dream at all’ really hit hard due to several eye-opening incidents.
