FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS. JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ RESCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 19
LOS ANGELES- Sports fans around the world can breathe again as it was announced today that the highly anticipated 12-round welterweight showdown between
Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez has been officially rescheduled for September 19, after Mayweather, who suffered a rib injury while training for the originally scheduled July 18 date, received clearance from his doctor to participate on the new date.
Mayweather vs. Marquez: "Number One/Numero Uno," which will still take place at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View, will now take place on what on what is historically considered boxing's biggest weekend, and falling on the time-honored tradition of Mexican Independence Day.
"I am relieved to be cleared to fight as I was already looking forward to getting back in the ring," said Mayweather. "Trust me, September 19 is a great weekend for boxing, and all of my fans, of which there are many Mexicans too, can certainly hold on to their hats and sombreros when I get back in to the ring and show them what they have been missing these past 18 months. I will destroy Marquez and reclaim my rightful place as boxing's pound-for-pound king all in one night. Don't miss it."
Marquez, who has also agreed to fight on the new date, is excited about appearing yet again on the time-honored tradition of El Grito de Independence.
"I am happy that Mayweather has been cleared to fight and we can get down to business on September 19," said Marquez. "This weekend is not just an important weekend for boxing, but even more so for all of the Mexican and Mexican-American people I will be fighting for who will have a great reason to celebrate my win over Mayweather, which will be for all of the people and for the entire country of Mexico that night. I am sure of victory and si se puede- yes we can and yes we will!"
Mayweather vs. Marquez: "Number One/Numero Uno," is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Marquez Promotions and is sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines.
See you at the Fights.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our
correspondent Matthew Kaplowitz of Fight Nerd Radio (http://
thefightnerd.podomatic.com/), a new mixed martial arts podcast.
With just its third episode in production, Matthew Kaplowitz is
creating a formula for his show which combines interviews, fight
reports and discussion, analysis of the broader scene in mixed martial
arts, and, of course, steady doses of nerdy humor.
We had a chance to sit down to talk with him both for his show, which
you will hear on Fight Nerd Radio, and our show.
On No Holds Barred, we focused the most on the rise of the Bellator
Fighting Championships, which just completed their first season of 12

impression of how these shows came off in person, as well as
discussing what Bellator needs to do to parlay the success of their
first season into making their promotion even stronger than it is now.

DiBella Entertainment signs undefeated super middleweight Marcus Johnson!!
DiBella Entertainment is proud to announce Marcus “Too Much” Johnson, one of the brightest young prospects boxing has to offer, as the latest to join the DiBella Entertainment stable. Johnson will be co-promoted by DBE and Antonio Leonard Productions, and managed by James Prince.
Johnson (16-0, 13 KOs), a resident of Houston, Texas, is undefeated through his first 16 bouts, with all but three coming via knockout. In his last bout, Johnson, 23, stopped former top contender Julio Caesar De la Cruz in seven rounds. Under the DiBella Entertainment banner, Johnson expects the big wins to keep on coming.
“Being with Lou DiBella is going to help dramatically,” said Johnson. “He’s going to push to get my name out there and get me recognized. He will get me a title shot.”
Johnson’s conquests have hardly been limited to just the professional ranks. A former US national champion at 178 lbs., Johnson holds amateur victories over the likes of Anthony Dirrell and DeAndrey Abron.
Johnson plans to campaign at 168 lbs. as a pro, but those amateur days, he says, were invaluable to his growth as a fighter.
“My dad taught me a professional style growing up,” said Johnson, who is coached by his father, James. “As an amateur I was sparring with professionals. I got exposed to many different styles. It has helped me out a lot.”
In Marcus Johnson, DiBella and Leonard believe they are investing in one of boxing’s best young practitioners. Part of their plan for Johnson is to make him a household name his skill dictates he should be.
“Marcus Johnson was a tremendous amateur and a spectacular young athlete,” said DiBella. “He has been flying under the radar for some time. With the proper team by his side, the potential for his future is limitless. I plan to provide the backing he needs to become a star.”
Said Leonard, “I am so excited about this kid. He has all the goods. Being with Lou DiBella is the best move for him. No one is better at keeping young fighters active. I can see Marcus fighting for a world title within a year.”
Like his new promotional team, Johnson has been waiting for his big break, and is confident that his will have on him top of the boxing world in no time.
“I have moved a lot slower than I had hoped,” said Johnson. “Now we are taking a new step towards bigger and better things.”

Giovanni Lorenzo wants his turn
Number One World Middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo of New York and the Dominican Republic has waited very patiently for his shot at the world title. The former Dominican Olympian has compiled an impressive 27-1, 19 KO record while quietly toiling under the tutelage of trainer Pastor Ralph Farriett of Yonkers for the past seven years.
“I want to be the world champion,” the soft spoken Lorenzo says. “That is my goal and nothing will stop me.”
Lorenzo should get his chance this Fall. He is currently in line to be the mandatory challenger for Arthur Abraham, the undefeated IBF Middleweight Champion, in his next fight.
“I’m already training and I want my chance at the title,” Lorenzo said from his home in the Dominican Republic. “I am tired of waiting in line. Tell Abraham’s people to get on the phone and start the negotiation.”
Today IBF put those wheels in motion when they sent a letter to Abraham’s promoter, Sauerland Event, advising them that negotiations for a Lorenzo fight should start immediately.
Rumors are swirling that Abraham, who defended his title successfully on Saturday night against former sparring partner Nahir Oral, can no longer make the middleweight limit and will move up in weight class rather than make his mandatory defense against Lorenzo. In that case, the IBF would order Lorenzo, the Number One Contender, to fight Sebastian Sylvester, an Abraham stablemate who earned the Number Two IBF ranking when he soundly defeated Lajuan Simon of Philadelphia Saturday night in Germany.
“I’ll fight either one,” the low key Lorenzo stated. “If Abraham won’t fight me, I’ll knock out Sylvester to win the title instead. I’ll fight either one of them right in Germany if I have to. Now it’s my turn and I’m going to come home with the title. I’m just waiting for them to tell me the date.”
Lorenzo promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events said, “Giovanni has been quietly learning his craft ever since he turned pro. I believe that by staying under the radar and avoiding the hype that sometimes causes young contenders to lose their focus he has been given the opportunity to prepare well for his world title challenge.” She added, “We expect that negotiations with Sauerland Event will move forward this week and we will have something definitive to announce very soon.”

NTH Promotions seeks injunction to stop Rigondeaux fight July 17 on ESPN FNF
CORK, Ireland– Irish boxing manager Gary Hyde, president of NTH Promotions, is seeking an injunction to prevent 2-time Olympic champion Guillermo Rigondeaux from fighting on the July 17th ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rigondeaux (1-0, 1 KO), fighting as a bantamweight, now lives in Los Angeles after defecting from Cuba, where he was a 7-time national champion. The 28-year-old southpaw also won multiple World Championships titles, as well as a gold medal at the 2003 Pan-Am Games, during his incredible 243-4 amateur career.
“I first met Rigo in Belfast at the 2001 World Boxing Championships and subsequently traveled to Cuba,” Hyde explained. “Rigo signed a 5-year management contract with me in March of 2007. I am currently battling in the Miami courts to enforce our management agreement because he made his pro debut under the management of GSMG LTD and Marcus Concepcion, who work closely with the Arena Box outfit. I could find no record of either holding a manager’s license.
“I made an application for a temporary injunction to prevent Rigondeaux from boxing May 22, but the presiding judge allowed him to box in the interest of the public, although his purse was frozen. Our case is getting stronger by the day. The only contract with Rigondeaux, on file with the Florida State Boxing Commission, was dated May, 2009 with GSMG and Marcus Concepcion as managers. When GSMG and Concepcion learned of the 2007 contract with me, they showed-up with a 3-year contract dated July, 2006 with Antonio Gonzalez, director of GSMG, as manager. There are numerous contradictions in their contract that are coming out. I have the only valid managerial contract for Rigo and we are hoping the honorable judge acknowledges.”
Hyde also manages three other Cuban boxers who defected and are now fighting as professionals out of Ireland – heavyweight Mike “The Rebel” Perez (8-0, 6 KOs), winner of the World Junior Championships; bantamweight Alexei “The Hurricane” Acosta (5-0, 5 KOs) and super middleweight Luis “El Leon” Garcia (5-0, 4 KOs), both World Junior Championships champion in 2006.
“I applied for and was granted a European Union work permit for Rigo,” Hyde continued. “My intention was for Rigo to make his pro debut on a Brian Peters Promotions show in Ireland and then head to the United States, where Brian had laid the foundation with some of the major TV companies. We would then have a stage to showcase my ‘Cuban Young Guns.’ Rigo decided to go ahead to Miami because he has more connections there. Now, I’m battling for the guy I have signed to a contract, who was the best amateur boxer on the planet. We recently contacted Freddie Roach to ask about his roll as Rigo’s trainer. Freddie said that he wouldn’t be getting involved, but when I’m awarded a judgement as Rigo’s manager, I hope to have him as his trainer.”

Quotes from Bobby Gunn Workout Hackensack P.A.L., Hackensack, NJ From Bobby Gunn
“I took this fight because I wanted to fight the best. Tomasz Adamek is the best. The man is a champion inside and outside the ring. I would have taken this fight for any amount of money they gave me. This is not about financial profit. This is about my chance to show everyone that I can be the best.”
“None of the Top 10 would fight Tomasz Adamek. I call them ‘Nancy Boys or ‘Fancy Pants’, they’re like prima donnas. What’s the sense of being ranked if you don’t want to fight the best in the world? When you are Top 10 you have to fight all the best. I want to fight Adamek, he is the best and I want to beat the best”
How has the training been going? “Are you kidding me? I am going all out for this fight. I am training to the best of my ability and I have the greatest team you can have. I have Kendall Holt’s trainer, “Terrific” Aroz Gist, I’m telling you the best! We have been studying the tapes. With cardio I went through the roof. I’m training really hard, harder than I ever have before. I am in great shape and I am ready.”
“To tell the truth, I’m kind of sick of Tomasz Adamek. I mean I go to sleep with Tomasz Adamek, I eat with Tomasz Adamek, I train with Tomasz Adamek. You know what I mean? It’s all I think about. I just want to fight him and get it over with.”
What do you say to all the people claiming this is not a good fight? “No one should pass judgment until they see the fight.” “They say styles make fights. Remember the Briggs – Adamek fight? That was a great fight. I think I am like Paul Briggs.” “I think the fans are in for another great fight on July 11th.”
“My dad would tell me, ‘There are a ton of mediocre fighters out there, but often when you fight a superior fighter, the fighter who was perceived as mediocre will rise to the occasion and surprise everyone.” “I am going to fight like a Kamikaze pilot. – I’ve got nothing to lose! That makes me a dangerous fighter.”
“In boxing things can change on the turn of a dime. All it takes is one punch. I am going to throw that punch.”
“I learned something in Polish for this fight. ‘Ten pas bedzie moj’. That means the belt is mine to take!”
From David Feldman, Bobby Gunn’s Promoter:
“Tomasz will think July 11th is his birthday because he will have a lot of surprises…but no gifts!”

See you at the Fights.

DEREK “POOH” ENNIS SET TO FACE JOHN MACKEY AT THE ARENA IN PHILADELPHIA ON JULY 10TH
PHILADELPHIA—Rising Jr. Middleweight Derek “Pooh” Ennis will take on the tough and durable John Mackey in a six round bout as one of the main undercard bouts on July 10th at The Arena in Philadelphia that will be a part of a huge night of boxing that will feature Two title fights and will be broadcasted across the country on ESPN 2.
The card is promoted by Blaine Garner’s Shalyte Entertainment in association with Jimmy Burchfield’s CES Boxing.
Ennis, of Philadelphia boasts a record of 17-2-1 with twelve knockouts
Ennis is on a roll as he has racked up five consecutive victories with three coming by knockout and is looking to get back in the ring after a couple of unforeseen circumstances have cancelled his last two bouts.
Ennis was scheduled to fight Joshua Onyango this past Friday night in Sailsbury, Maryland when Onyango was in an automobile accident on his way to the weigh-in.
Ennis successfully made the 154 pound limit and is in great shape and ready to ride the momentum of the win streak.
Mackey of Montgomery, Alabama has been in tough and has come through very nicely as he has a record of 11-3-2 with five knockouts.
Mackey won his first nine bouts which included victories over Timmy Leonard (3-0-1), Tony Cygan (12-1), and Alex Mancea (7-1). In his most recent fights, Mackey has suffered a few losses but most of them have been disputed.
Take for instance his last two bouts. He dropped an eight round split decision to Cecil McCalla (6-0) and drew with Jesse Nicklow (19-1-1) in front of a pro-Nicklow crowd. Ringside observers thought that Mackey could have won both fights.
The Nicklow took place this past June 18th.
In the main event on July 10th, Matt Godfrey will defend his NABF Cruiserweight title against Shawn Hawk while Shaun George and Chris Henry will engage in a ten round Light Heavyweight tussle.
Tony Ferrante of Northeast Philadelphia risks his undefeated record against Billy Bailey for the WBF All-Americas Light Heavyweight title.
Those are just four of the eleven bout card which will include Coy Evans, Olivia Fonseca, Jackie Davis and undefeated Super Featherweight Issac Suarez.
See you at the Fights.

No Holds Barred: Joe Soto, Bellator Featherweight Champion
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with
mixed martial arts fighter Joe Soto, who became the featherweight (145-
pound) champion of the Bellator Fighting Championships by winning an
eight-man tournament.
Although he is undefeated as a fighter, the 22-year-old Joe Soto was
not the favorite heading into this tournament. That distinction went
to the better-known Wilson Reis, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, who
was also undefeated and had gained notoriety by winning the EliteXC
bantamweight title in 2008.
When Joe Soto and Wilson Reis met in the featherweight semifinals on
May 8, 2009, however, it was Soto who emerged victorious, winning a
three-round unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the
fight 30-27. Soto then went on to dominate and defeat Yahir Reyes with
a rear naked choke in the second round of their championship fight on
June 5, 2009, and become the first Bellator featherweight champion.
We spoke with Joe Soto about his emergence as a new, young, rising
star in mixed martial arts. We discussed his background as a wrestler
at Iowa Central Community College, his transition from wrestling to
mixed martial arts, his training and skills in both boxing and jiu-
jitsu, his crucial victory over Wilson Reis, his plans for the future,
and much more.

GODFREY-HAWK; GEORGE-HENRY ESPN2 DOUBLEHEADER ADDED TO JULY 10TH ARENA SHOW IN PHILADELPHIA
PHILADELPHIA— Two major bouts have been added to the already packed July 10th show at The Arena in Philadelphia which will now be seen all over the country on ESPN 2
In the new main event, Matt Godfrey will take on the undefeated Shawn Hawk for the NABF Cruiserweight championship.
The co-feature will be a Light Heavyweight tussle between surging Shaun George and Chris Henry in a scheduled ten round affair.
These two fights are added to an already nine bout (eleven in total) is promoted by Blaine Garner’s y Shalyte Entertainment in association with Jimmy Burchfield’s CES Boxing and DiBella Entertainment.
Godfrey (18-1, 10 KOs), rated No. 6 by the WBC and No. 7 by the IBF, will defend his NABF and SNBC belts against unbeaten challenger Hawk (18-0-1, 16 KOs) in the 10-round main event.
“Both of these cruiserweights were highly successful amateurs and now they are two of the top young contenders in the division,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield said. “Both are Native Americans, too. When Matt won the first Sovereign Nation Boxing Council (SNBC) belt, Shawn fought on the same card last November at 4 Bears Casino in North Dakota. This is the match-up American boxing fans want to see – two top fighters in against each other. Matt and Shawn have wanted to fight each other for a long time and now it’s finally going to happen.”
The Ring magazine’s No. 10-ranked Godfrey, who has Narragansett blood in his family, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships, four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics. He was a Bronze medal winner at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver Medalist in all four of that year’s national major tournaments – National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge -- and six-time New England Golden Gloves champion.
As a pro, three of the 28-year-old Godfrey’s most impressive performances have been knockouts of Emmanuel Nwodo, Felix Cora, Jr. and Shaun George on ESPN. His lone loss was by 12-round decision 15 months ago in a WBC title eliminator to Rudolf Kraj in Germany, in which, Godfrey came on strong down the stretch only to run out of rounds.
Hawk, 25, is a full-blooded Sioux who comes from Crow Creek Reservation, North Dakota, which is the poorest Native American reservation in the country. Shawn had a 108-12 amateur record, including victories in four national championships, highlighted by a gold-medal performance at the National PAL Tournament when he was 14.
"I'm excited to be back in the ring doing what I love," George, 18-2-2 (9 KO), says. "Good old-fashioned boxing without the politics. I'm fighting in his hometown; a lot of people wouldn't want to do that."
The 30-year-old George exploded onto the scene last year with a dominant nine-round blowout of two-time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd on ESPN2. Since then he has only fought once, knocking out former world title challenger Jaffa Ballogou in 86 seconds this past February. George is promoted by Dibella Entertainment.
"I feel like every fight is life or death for me. I'm not getting the opportunities other fighters are getting so I have to treat this fight like it's all or nothing. Chris Henry is a dangerous fighter and I respect him. It's going to be on ESPN2 so I want to show the world what I'm capable of doing with a top ten contender."
Henry, 28, brings a record of 23-2 (18 KO) and has the experience of having fought for a world title. Last year Henry went to Romania to give unbeaten Adrian Diaconu a serious run for his money, losing a bid for the World Boxing Council light-heavyweight championship. Henry also took Yusaf Mack to the wire, winning the fight on one judge's card but losing a close decision.
"I'm not coming to show mercy to any of these guys," says George. "I'm on a mission to prove to myself that I'm the best fighter in the world. Chris Henry is a world class contender, but I believe I'm the best in the world. I don't think this fight will be easy, but I will win. Our styles make for very fan-friendly fight. So everybody go and get your tickets."
Tony Ferrante of Northeast Philadelphia risks his perfect record of 7-0 with four knockouts as he takes on the “Philly Upset specialist”, Billy Bailey in an eight round Light Heavyweight bout for the WBF United States Light Heavyweight title that will headline a massive undercard of Philly’s finest.
Ferrante is on a three fight knockout streak which includes his last outing when he stopped Anthony Pietantonio (6-1) in five rounds on May 1st at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
Bailey is no stranger to pulling off upsets in Philadelphia. He has a record of 8-3 with three knockouts which includes his last outing where he stopped Philly’s own Brian Cohen (9-1) in Cohen’s backyard of South Philadelphia.
The native of Bakersfield, California has been in with prospects Roger Cantrell (12-1) and Brandon Gonzalez (4-0) so many in the Philadelphia fight scene believe this is a pick’em fight.
In a six round Super Featherweight affair, Coy Evans of Philadelphia will take on the durable Darrell Martin of Baltimore.
Evans has a record of 4-0-1 with his last outing being a four round unanimous decision over Jose Espinal (5-3-1) in Brooklyn, New York on February 2nd.
Although he is from Baltimore, Martin is more or less a Philadelphia fighter as six of his thirteen (4-9, 1 KO) fights have come inside the Philadelphia city limits.
Martin scored his career best win when he stopped Jules Blackwell (8-1-2) in three rounds last December at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
The ladies will be front and center on July 10 as two big bouts featuring females will take place.
Jackie Davis, 1-0 with one knockout will look to build on her pro debut knockout on March 13th when she battles Rachel Clark (2-1, 2 KO’s) of Colombia, South Carolina in a four round Welterweight bout.
The very Popular Olivia Fonseca (2-2-2, 1 KO) of Philadelphia returns after a ten month hiatus when she takes on the capable Lisa Bolin (2-2, 2 KO’s) of South Carolina in a four round Welterweight bout.
Fresh off his exciting pro debut on May 8th, Derrick Webster (1-0) of Glassboro, New Jersey will take on Roger Locklear (1-2) of South Carolina in a four round Middleweight bout.
In a battle of pro debuting Heavyweight, Kareem Harrison of Philadelphia battles Winston Thorpe of North Carolina.
Also making his pro debut will be Angel Ocassio in a four round Lightweight bout.
See you at the Fights.

“DiBella Inks Antwone Smith!!”
New York- DiBella Entertainment has announced exciting welterweight Antwone “The Truth” Smith (16-1-1, 8 KO’s) as the newest addition to their stable of world class boxers.
Promoter Lou DiBella expressed his excitement at the signing of Smith. “I became more and more impressed as I watched Antwone win four consecutive nationally televised ESPN fights as the underdog,” said DiBella. “He is a special talent and will be a significant player in the welterweight division.”
At barely twenty two years old, the battle tested Smith has beaten experienced athletes such as Richard Gutierrez, Norberto Gonzalez and Juan Camilo Novoa. Boxing since he was a young teen, Smith compiled an impressive amateur record and won several tournaments including the Florida Golden Gloves.
Despite his youth, Smith is already a polished fighter. He is a calculating and entertaining boxer/puncher who lives and trains in Miami, Florida with Jorge Rubio and is managed by Donnie Herron. His only loss was a highly controversial six round unanimous decision to Ed Paredes, a loss he intends to reverse in the future.
“I think Lou DiBella is a brilliant promoter and person in general,” said Herron. “Antwone is very intelligent and smart fighter. So together they should be a great team.”
Smith, who is newly engaged and the father of two kids, is happy to have a promoter backing him. “It hasn’t been easy so it feels good to have someone in my corner, helping me out,” said Smith. “Who better than Lou DiBella?”See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

"Shaun George/Chris Henry Showdown is on in Philly!!"
The anticipated match-up between light heavyweight contenders Shaun George and Chris Henry is on for July 10, 2009! The fight will take place at The Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The ten-round bout, which will be televised on ESPN 2, was added on to an action packed card as the co-feature to Matt Godfrey v. Shawn Hawk.
George (18-2-2, 9 KO’s) is considered a top contender for the light heavyweight title. He captured the attention of the boxing world when he destroyed two-time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd last year. George’s most recent win came last February when he knocked out former world title challenger Jaffa Ballogou in the first round in stunning fashion.
“This is a great fight for Shaun on his path to a future title shot,” said his promoter Lou DiBella.
Henry (23-2, 18 KO’s) is no stranger to fighting top notch competition like George. He has been in the ring with the likes of Adrian Daiconu and Yusef Mack. The styles of both George and Henry should make for an exciting and fan-friendly match up.
“I feel like every fight is life or death for me,” said George. “This fight will be no different. I am on a mission to prove I am the best.” See you at the Fights.

“Allan Green Targets WBC Champ Froch!!”
Ever since Allan “Sweetness” Green stole the show on April 25 with a second round knockout over Carlos De Leon, Jr. he has been waiting for the big showcase fight he deserves. With no one stepping up to the plate, Green has set his sights on Carl Froch, the man he shared top billing with in April, in his quest to prove he is the best super middleweight in the world.
It’s no secret Green (28-1, 20 KOs) is the world’s most exciting fighter at 168 lbs. His stirring knockout wins over top contenders such as De Leon, Jr., Jerson Ravelo, Darrell Woods, and Jaidon Codrington have been captivating boxing fans for years.
However, in recent months, with not one fighter showing a willingness to step in with him, he remembered the words of Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) who said he would welcome all challengers for the WBC title he won on that night in April.
"I want his belt,” said Green. “We both scored knockout wins on the same Showtime telecast, so to me, and the Showtime viewers, it would make perfect sense for us to fight each other next. I have a lot of respect for Froch and his skills, but he doesn't go more than six rounds with me."
Green’s promoter, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment isn’t surprised people are so reluctant to fight his charge, given his tremendous boxing skills and unparalleled power. But, he believes Carl Froch is one fighter who wants a challenge, and that Green-Froch is the best fight that can be made in the super middleweight division.
“A fight between Allan Green and Carl Froch is one of the best that can be made in boxing,” said DiBella. “It’s reasonable for Froch to want to defend his title on his home turf, and Allan Green is willing to travel to Britain for the fight. If Froch is really committed to fighting the best the division has to offer, he will take the challenge of a fight with Allan Green.”
With Froch on his mind, Green is done waiting patiently for his chance to shine, and wants the WBC champ to know they have the power to put on one of the most intriguing fights in boxing, and he is ready to get it on.
"He came to America and made his mark,” Green said of Froch. “I’m willing to go to his backyard, knock him out, then go back to Nottingham for an immediate rematch and knock him out again to make an example out of him. It's only going to be a short amount of time before I'm the sultan of the super middleweights."
See you at the Fights.

Kathy Brothers (http://www.kathybrothers.net/) was the first American woman to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She has also been a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and a two-time Pan American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion, as well as a World Free-Fighting champion and a World Pancration Council champion. Bernard Fernandez: Chambers is America's heavyweight hope By Bernard Fernandez of the Philadelphia Daily News
EDDIE CHAMBERS intends to celebrate the Fourth of July in the traditional way, which is to say with fireworks and some flag-waving. It's just that he'll be doing it in the ring, and far away from home.
Hamburgers may or may not be on a grill anywhere near the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany, but the Pittsburgh-born, Philadelphia-based fighter said he will take the occasion of the United States' 233rd birthday to spectacularly demonstrate that at least one American heavyweight is capable of taking a lead position in what long has been considered boxing's most prestigious division.
"A lot of people say the best U.S. hope among heavyweights is Chris Arreola. I disagree. I say it's me," said Chambers (34-1, 18 KOs), who squares off with Russia's Alexander Dimitrenko (29-0, 19 KOs) in a WBO elimination bout, the winner of which becomes the mandatory contender to WBO/IBF titlist Wladimir Klitschko (53-3, 47 KOs), of Ukraine, who is widely considered to be the best heavyweight in the world - at least by those who don't think his older brother, WBC titlist Vitali Klitschko, is more deserving of that designation.
Wladimir Klitschko presumably strengthened his case for occupying the top spot Saturday with an efficient, 10th-round stoppage of Uzbekistan's Ruslan Chagaev, the WBA heavyweight champ "in recess," before a sellout crowd of 61,000-plus in a soccer stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. That fight was seen on an incredible 58.4 percent of all the televisions in use in Germany during its time slot.
There might not be any country where boxing is an easier sell now than in Germany, which is why Chambers is headed back to Deutschland, the site of his only professional defeat. Money talks, and no U.S. TV outlet expressed a serious interest in televising Chambers-Dimitrenko here, there or anywhere.
But by going into an hostile environment and knocking off one of the Eastern Europeans who currently dominate the heavyweight landscape, Chambers, 27, and his manager-trainer, Philly's Rob Murray Sr., hope to demonstrate to HBO and Showtime that "Fast Eddie" is an American big man worthy of their backing. At the very least, Team Chambers intends to return to these shores on a victorious note, which was not the case following Chambers' 12-round, unanimous-decision loss to Russia's Alex Povetkin on Jan. 26, 2008, in Berlin.
In that bout, Chambers had his moments early, but thereafter fought with a curious lack of urgency, which allowed Povetkin to come on in the middle and later rounds.
Chambers replaced his father, Eddie Chambers Sr., as his trainer after that bout with his manager, Murray, who learned some cheesesteak-and-scrapple-flavored tricks of the trade by observing such legendary Philadelphia cornermen as Yank Durham and Sam Solomon. This will be Murray's fifth outing with Chambers in a dual capacity.
"We talk all the time about what went wrong in the Povetkin fight," Murray said. "It's the one that got away. Eddie's mistake was that he prepared for a fight, but not the fight. Nobody in his corner that night knew what buttons to push.
"If I had been in the corner for the Povetkin fight, I would have pushed the right buttons."
Some of those buttons already have been pushed, during Chambers' training camp in the Poconos. Chambers, who weighed 219 1/2 pounds for the Povetkin fight, has gotten down as low as 205 in camp and he said he will enter the ring against Dimitrenko no higher than 211, which would be his lowest weight since Feb. 10, 2006, when he was 211 for a bout with Andrew Greeley at the Blue Horizon.
"Eddie's not only the underdog, he's undersized," Murray noted. "He's fighting for short money. We're going over there to take on these big Russians that nobody else wants to fight. But we're not ducking anybody.
"This is a guy who wants to be the heavyweight champion of the world, not just the heavyweight champion of Pittsburgh or Philadelphia or the state of Pennsylvania. To do that, he has to kick the door down. He's going to do it, too. After Eddie beats Dimitrenko, we want to fight Povetkin again and then both of the Klitschkos."
That's a pretty ambitious agenda for someone who has logged 51.4 percent of his pro bouts at the Blue Horizon, where he is 18-0.
Not always beautiful
So stunningly attractive that she once was featured in a Playboy magazine pictorial, Mia St. John understands that some fight fans never have taken her seriously. She was derided by critics as the "Bunny Boxer," a bit of eye candy who gained prominence as the lead-in to some of Oscar De La Hoya's pay-per-view bouts in the mid- to late 1990s.
"I knew how they were marketing me. I don't blame them. I was what you'd call a willing victim," St. John, who turns 42 tomorrow, said during an appearance in Philadelphia last week to promote her new fitness book, "The Knockout Workout."
But life wasn't always lovely for St. John, a divorced, Mexican-American mother of two. In her latest instructional tome, St. John reveals that for years she battled alcoholism and bulimia, the result, she said, of self-esteem issues stemming from a childhood spent with a father who was "an angry and oftentimes violent drunk."
She never used to refer to her ugly past, but now that St. John (45-10-2, 18 KOs) is nearing the end of her boxing career - she is only 2-4 in her last six bouts- she said it's important to let women know that it's not the diet but the mind-set that can set them free.
"Diets don't work, because it's not about the food," said St. John. "It's about how you feel on the inside. Unless you learn to love yourself for exactly who you are, you're never going to stop the cycle of overeating."
Punch lines
Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall is the setting for "Latin Fury 9" on Saturday night, the main event of which has Puerto Rico's Juan Manuel Lopez (25-0, 23 KOs) defending his WBO super bantamweight championship against Olivier Lontchi (18-0, 8 KOs), of Montreal . . . Hall of Famer Pernell Whitaker makes his debut as the trainer of former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora when Spadafora (41-0-1, 16 KOs) squares off against Ivan Bustos (25-12-3, 8 KOs) in a 10-round junior welterweight bout tomorrow night in Spadafora's hometown of Pittsburgh. *See you at the Fights.
