Brett Rogers wins debut, Bellator 71,Brett Rogers 'not perfect' but ready to 'change and make it right' in Bellato

In the first fight of the evening, heavy-handed heavyweight Brett “Da Grim” Rogers made his Bellator debut against former friend and training partner Kevin Asplund, who came in to the fight riding a 19-fight winning streak. After a dominant first round that included a beautiful throw and devastating uppercut that opened a cut on Asplund (19-2), the much larger Rogers (12-4) opted to use his size and weight advantage in the second to control Asplund on the ground. After two rounds of punishment, referee Robert Riley deemed Kevin Asplund unfit to start the third round, awarding the TKO victory to Brett Rogers

“It was definitely a tough fight,” said Rogers. “We trained together in the past, so I knew it was going to be a hard fight.”

Rogers was also optimistic about his future in Bellator going forward.

“I just want to continue getting better here in Bellator. I just want to get in here and knock these guys out.”

"Viva Don King II" boxing event Saturday night in Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., RESULTS + QUOTES

Post-Fight Ring Quotes

The 3,158 patrons attending tonight's "Viva Don King II" boxing event Saturday night in Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., were treated to a great card culminating with a staggering heavyweight knockout by Hartford's Tony "TNT" Grano over DaVarryl Williamson. Grano claims the vacant NABF heavyweight championship.

Tony Grano: (Won the vacant NABF heavyweight championship): “DaVarryl caught me with a good right hand in the second round. I didn’t want to get caught again, so I started moving to my right and resetting before he had a chance to try and tag me with those long arms.

“I had him in big trouble and tried to take him out in the third round.
To be honest, I expended a lot of energy, so I regained my composure in the fourth and caught him right on the button with a right hand for the knockout.

“I think I showed everyone tonight that I have a knockout punch.
I’d like a shot at Vitali Klitschko before he retires. Right now I can’t wait to get back to Connecticut to celebrate.”

Angelo Santana: “I was very happy with my performance tonight. I didn’t know my opponent (Justin Savi] was going to switch to southpaw on me. I trained for a right-hander but it turned out well at the end.

“He kept coming in and we kept butting heads from the opening round.
That happened because he kept changing his stance. Savi was a very strong fighter tonight but I trained for 12 rounds and I was able to stop him early.”

Joey Hernandez “I was a little flat in the beginning but I found my groove quickly.

“A lot of people tell me I look a lot like Victor Ortiz but I sure have bigger balls than he does.
I heard he quit on his stool tonight in Los Angeles. Now Canelo Alvarez needs an opponent, so if he wants to fight a young lion, I’m here in Miami. I’m calling out all the junior middleweights”

Omar Henry “I tried to knock him [Tyrone Selders] down but he was a tough guy. I was full of speed tonight. I was prepared well and felt great. I loved putting on a great performance for the fans. I turned it up at the end of each round because I wanted to finish strong for the judges.

“I’d like to fight K9 Bundrage or Cory Spinks after they fight for a world title one week from tonight.
I will fight anyone at 154 pounds.

“I tweaked my right hand but I’m sure it will be alright.”

Thomas Snow: A lot of people thought I couldn’t make 115, so I defied the odds to take it a weight class down [112 pounds] just to show I could. The people who thought I couldn’t make 115 can kiss my ass. Thanks to everyone and I’ll take all challengers at 115 pounds.”

YUSAF MACK TO TAKE ON SABOU BALLOGOU ON JULY 7TH AT THE PENNSYLVANIA CONVENTION CENTER IN PHILADELPHIA‏

Plus Philly Favorites Dhafir Smith, Tim Witherspoon Jr., Eric Hunter, Wahid Raheem, Tyrone Crawley Jr, Alex Barbosa and More as well as some of Philadelphia’s finest amateurs

On Saturday night July 7th at the beautiful Pennsylvania Convention Center, James Shuler Gym Promotions presents a night of boxing that will feature some of the best boxers in Philadelphia.

In the main event, Former world title challenger and currant USBA Light Heavyweight champion, Yusaf Mack will take on upset minded Sabou Ballogou in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.

Mack of Philadelphia has a record of 30-4-2 with seventeen knockouts and is coming an impressive performance when he scored an emphatic twelve round unanimous decision over former four-time world title challenger Omar Sheika on April 28th in Atlantic City.

Mack previously challenged for the IBF World championship and gave undefeated champion Tavoris Cloud all he wanted before being stopped in the eighth round.

Mack has victories over Donnell Wiggins (21-4-2); Jose Juan Vasquez (16-1-1); Daniel Judah (22-2-3) & Chris Henry (23-1)

Mack’s only setbacks have been to world champions Cloud, Alejandro Berrio, Glen Johnson and former world title challenger Librado Andrade.

Ballogou of Paris, France has a record of 8-5 with three knockouts.

He is a former IBC International and IBF Pan African Middleweight champion and is coming off a performance when he dropped an eight round unanimous decision to highly regarded and undefeated Derrick Webster in what was Ballogou’s American debut.

In that bout, Ballogou dropped Webster twice in round seven and Webster seemed seconds away from being knocked out before the bell rang to signal the end of the round. Webster was able to compose himself and hang on for the victory.

In the six round co-feature, newly crowned Pennsylvania Light Heavyweight champion Dhafir Smith (26-22-7, 4 KO’s) of Philadelphia will take on Bobby Jordan (8-3-1, 4 KO’s) of Norfolk, VA.

GOODWIN MAIN EVENTS LEON ‘SOLID’ WILLIAMS Vs. TONY ‘CONQUEROR’ CONQUEST Southern Area Cruiserweight Championship 7th July 2012 @ York Hall, London

Former Champ Williams Ready For July 7th Title Showdown With Conquest.

After three false starts, the long awaited showdown, between former British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams and Southern Area Champ Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest, is finally set to take place, on the Olivia Goodwin promoted ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall on Saturday 7th July.

The last time this highly anticipated Clash of the Titans was due to take place was back in January, as Williams’ first defense of his British Crown, however Conquest was forced to withdraw due to a viral infection.

With Conquest out Williams instead defended against Nottingham’s Shane McPhilbin.

For eleven rounds Williams totally dominated the proceedings, including sending McPhilbin to the canvas twice. However after just thirty seconds of the final round things took a dramatic turn, for the worse, after McPhilbin landed a powerful clubbing shot, to the back of the defending Champ’s head, which ultimately lead to the fight being stopped and a new British Champion crowned.

With no quick rematch with McPhilbin, or a shot at current British Champ Enzo Maccarinelli on the horizon, the only way Williams could get back into the Championship mix this year would be to challenge his good friend Conquest.

A situation that wasn’t lost on the former Champ, as he made clear when he spoke briefly, following a training session at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, earlier. “Yeah it’s a stepping stone, I know I gave up the Southern Area title before I beat Rob Norton and became British Champ, but it does lead to bigger and better things.

God willing, I’ll get the chance to get my Lonsdale belt back after beating Tony on the 7th.

No make that Johnny willing, Johnny, my manager Johnny Eames, will do the business side for me, I’ve just got to win.

Preparation has been very good, sparring has been the best. I’m Dereck Chisora’s main sparring partner, so that’s good experience and I learn from it all the time.

This is really going to help me with the fight. Dereck’s a very big, strong guy and after all this work Tony will feel like a lightweight in comparison - Thank you Dereck Chisora.

I’m not trashing Tony, he’s a good friend of mine and a very good boxer, but there’s no friendship when you step in the ring, you fight, and that’s what we’re going to do - fight.

Team Solid is back...and climbing the ladder to the top. Team Solid all day, every Day...Yeah.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest for the Southern Area Cruiserweight title co-headlines Olivia Goodwin’s ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 7th July 2012.

LeGrand Joins Team Fight to Walk!‏

Eric LeGrand is the newest member of Team Fight to Walk.
Created in 2011 by boxer and West Point graduate Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson, Team Fight to Walk’s goal is to raise awareness within the boxing community as well as the entire nation about the importance of bringing Clinical Trials to the United States to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. In association with Team Fight to Walk, Melson, who has a record of 8-1 with 4 knockouts, donates all of his fight purses to Justadollarplease.org to help support the trial.
A New Jersey native, LeGrand was one of the Garden State's top recruits and earned a scholarship to play football at Rutgers in the fall of 2008. On October 16, 2010, the 6’2 275 lb Avenel native severely injured his spinal cord while attempting to tackle Malcolm Brown of Army. The two violently collided and LeGrand remained on the ground for more than three minutes before medical personnel took him off the field.
LeGrand was transported to the ICU at Hackensack University Medical Center, where doctors determined he was a quadriplegic. Doctors told him that every day would be a severe struggle but LeGrand refused to give up. Within three months, LeGrand was able to move his shoulders and felt sensation throughout his body. In July 2011, after working tirelessly during rehabilitation sessions, LeGrand stood upright with the aid of a walker.
Later that year, LeGrand led Rutgers onto the field prior to their game against West Virginia. Sports Illustrated readers voted the best moment in 2011. On May 2, 2012, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now coached by former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, signed the courageous 21-year-old to an honorary contract.
"I’m very happy to be a part of the team and a part of the journey to find a cure for spinal cord injuries,” stated LeGrand. “Everything happens for a reason and miracles happen every day.”
“Eric is the ultimate fighter,” said Melson, who is connected to LeGrand through Dr. Patricia Morton and the Rutgers Foundation. “My best friend Christan Zaccagnino was paralyzed in a diving accident when she was a child and I’ve spent countless hours with her, so I truly understand what Eric goes through to the best of my ability without actually being in a wheelchair myself. He’s an inspiration to people from all walks of life and his inner-strength is unbelievable. We’ve received an excellent response from the boxing community and our roster of fighters supporting the cause continues to grow, but Eric’s presence will help us reach new heights!”
LeGrand will be honored for his courageousness July 11 at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles and Melson’s next bout is tentatively scheduled for August in New York City.
In addition to LeGrand and Melson, Team Fight to Walk is comprised of former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr., 2008 US Olympians Demetrius “Boo” Andrade and Shawn Estrada along with prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Will “Power” Rosinsky, Floriano “Italiano” Pagliara, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

Hector Camacho Jr. Looks To Begin Title Run Saturday Night

Hector Camacho Jr. Looks To Begin Title Run Saturday Night

This Saturday night Hector Camacho Jr. will be stepping into the ring against Bernardo Guereca and looking to get back on track to working towards a potential middleweight title fight.

Camacho Jr. (53-4-1, 28 KO) is 10-1 in his last 11 fights, with his only loss coming at the hands of David Lemieux for the WBC International Middleweight Title. Coming into this fight on a 16 month layoff, Camacho Jr. is ready to get into the ring.

“I am very excited for Saturday night,” said Camacho. “We have had countless fights fall through, and then I dealt with the hand injury. But everything’s great now. I had a great training camp. Guereca is a strong fighter and also a fellow southpaw. I can’t wait to get in there and go to work.”

When Camacho Jr. is not training he donates a large part of his time to working with inner city kids and is a Board Member for the nonprofit organization Find A Dream.

“Find A Dream is a great organization with the best interest of the kids in mind,” said Camacho Jr. “They strive to help build facilities for inner city youth to go to, to keep them off the streets and out of gangs. Too many kids nowadays lack direction or any kind of mentorship, and Find A Dream provides them with that outlet.”

Camacho Jr. is joined by an all-star team at Find A Dream, including former Olympic gold medalist and heavyweight champion Ray Mercer, former cruiserweight champion Bobby Czyz, Don Steele, amongst a few others.

Find A Dream is adamant about its boxers and Board members staying active within their community and portraying a positive image and role. In upcoming months they will be hosting several events to spread awareness and promote their cause.

Hector Camacho Jr. will be going to battle against Bernardo Guereca this Saturday night at La Villita Maverick Plaza in San Antonio Texas.

Former World Champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO's) of Ventura, Calif., former NABF Champion Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17 KO's) of Riverside, Calif., former Three-Time World Champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto and hard-hitting, top rated contender Lucas Matthysse took part in a final media workout on Wednesday at Fortune Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, just days before they do battle on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, June 23 live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

The vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Welterweight title is on the line in the 12-round Ortiz vs. Lopez bout while Soto (59-7-2, 34 KO’s), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, will battle Trelew, Argentina native Matthysse (30-2, 28 KO’s) in 12-round co-featured bout for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight title.

VICTOR ORTIZ:

“Fans can expect a great show on Saturday night. There haven't been many changes in this camp. I have always had a goal to be one of the greatest fighters of all time and that goal is still there. I have trained hard for a good fight and I am ready.

“Josesito is a hell of a fighter. I’m not taking anything away from him, but right now he is stepping into the wrong den. I will show it Saturday night.”

JOSESITO LOPEZ:

“I just recently started watching tapes. It does make a difference. I used to just let my coach watch, but it does give a clearer idea about what you have to look forward to. Training has been going great. I moved up in weight and it’s given me that much more energy. I’ve had the energy, power, and strength throughout camp to not have to slow down.

“I am at a position where there are bigger things I want to achieve, and that’s motivation right there. On Saturday it all starts. On Saturday the smarter fighter will win.”

Regarding the Canelo Alvarez vs. Ortiz announcement:

“I find it disrespectful to announce the fight ahead of time, but if anything it gives me more motivation to achieve what I want to achieve. I think (the result) is going to surprise everyone.”

HUMBERTO SOTO:

“I am a very professional fighter. I feel very good at 140 pounds. Whoever said I lost speed and power, well that’s not true. I proved with my last three fights in this division that I can handle it.”

With regards to his game plan:

“Things change in the ring. I have my game plan, but once the bell rings I am going to see what’s in front of me, but I always prepare to win. I know Matthysse has as well, so it’s going to make for a very good fight.”

LUCAS MATTHYSSE:

“I expect to win by KO. I think I was robbed against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in the United States, so expect a KO. I don’t want it going to the judges on Saturday, so expect a good fight.
