A pair of young lightweight prospects battling to get to the next level, Verquan “The Show” Kimbrough and Jason “The American Boy” Litzau, have been added to the August 15th “Hook City” pay per view event in a 10-round Special Attraction.
The “Hook City” pay-per-view show, headlined by two of the best left-hook punchers in boxing, 8-time world boxing champion Roy “Captain Hook” Jones, Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) and former 2-time super middleweight title-holder Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy (25-2, 17 KOs, will air live from the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.
The “Hook City” pay-per-view show, presented by Square Ring Promotions in association with Left Hook Promotions and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, is being distributed by Square Ring Promotions, Inc. at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network for a suggested retail price of $34.95, as well as on Super Channel in Canada.
Kimbrough (21-1-2, 7 KOs), 26, has a rich amateur pedigree, highlighted by his gold medal performance in the 2002 U.S. Nationals (AAU) Championships as a lightweight, the same tournament and weight class that produced champions such as Aaron Pryor, Pernell Whitaker, Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley and a host of other world champions.
A member of the Roy Jones, Jr.-owned Square Ring Promotions stable, Verquan at one time held several titles, including IBA, NABA, NABC Americas, IBC Americas, and West Virginia State. A slick, consummate boxer from Pittsburgh, Kimbrough is looking forward to his fight against Litzau, who has already challenged for the IBF featherweight crown.
“I feel very good about fighting on this show because it’ll be my first time on pay per view,” he said from training camp. “I’m eager, especially where I’ll be fighting on the same card at Roy Jones, Jr. The fight itself will be exciting and is a big step for me. I look forward to getting in the ring with an elite athlete and putting on a great exhibition.
“I’ve watched a lot of Roy’s fights and what I like most about him is what he brings to the table. He’s a great champion who is also a promoter. There’s an edge with him because he’s still a fighter, unlike most other promoters. I signed with him because I liked him and his team the most. They are all very ethical individuals who are united in their efforts. My word is my bond, let the cards fall where they may, and they’re like that, too. I’m enjoying training with Roy at camp. I know what to expect from him -- when it’s time for business or to play. You can see it in his eyes. He jokes when it’s play time, but he’s all business in the gym.”
Litzau (24-2, 20 KOs), fighting out of St. Paul (MN), already had a taste of competing at the next level, losing an IBF featherweight title fight 1 ½ years ago to Robert Guerrero. The 26-year-old Litzau is a flashy fighter who also had an impressive amateur career, posting a reported 125-10 career, including top honors in the National Silver Gloves Championship, and later earning a spot on the 2001 U.S. National Boxing Team.
“Fighting him is going to be a little awkward for me because he’s so tall (5’ 10”),” the 5’ 5” Kimbrough noted. “We both started boxing when we were young and are good athletes and competitors. He is the toughest opponent of my career. We’re at the level where the fight’s going to come down to who is more mentally and physically capable of getting to the next level. I’ve developed my skills where I can fight well against anything brought to the table. I guarantee that I’ll have the answers for anything he brings into the ring.
“I think it’ll come down to the stronger, more focused fighter that night. I expect a tough fight and I’m up to the challenge. I’m looking forward not only to the fight, but winning. I think this will be the biggest win on my resume. I don’t look too far ahead, career-wise; I leave that up to Roy and Square Ring, whether my next fight will be for any type of title or at the next level of competition. Australian import Danny “Green Machine” Green (26-3, 23 KOs) takes on South American champion Julio Cesar “La Furia” Dominguez (20-4-1, 14 KOs) in the 12-round co-feature for the vacant IBO cruiserweight championship.

Bradley Defends WBO Strap With Controvercial Victory Over Campbell On SHOWTIME
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif- Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs) retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Welterweight title with a highly controversial third round TKO over Nate Campbell (33-6-1, 25 KOs) on Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast from the California desert.
Referee David Mendoza ruled that a Bradley punch, not an accidental head butt, in the third round caused a cut and damage to Campbell’s vision that forced the ringside physician to halt the contest on the advice of Campbell’s corner before the start of round four.
In the SHOWTIME® co-feature, young gun Devon Alexander (19-0, 11 KOs) outworked Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KOs) to win the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Lightweight (140-pound) Championship by TKO after Witter quit on his stool after eight rounds.
The evening was promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions in association with Don King Productions and Agua Caliente Casino • Resort • Spa.
Bradley, of neighboring Palm Springs, Calif., was the overwhelming house favorite with his fans cheering wildly for him and booing his Jacksonville, Fla., opponent. Both fighters came out strong in the first round landing punches and pressing the action. In the third, after an accidental clash of heads, Campbell signaled to Mendoza to acknowledge the mishap as Bradley unleashed a fury of punches before the bell.
Campbell returned to his corner with blood surrounding his eye and was heard saying, “I can’t see, I can’t see. My eye is blind. I have spots in my eye.”
Ringside physicians could not allow the bout to continue and Campbell offered no protest as the fight was called.
When the decision was announced—a TKO victory for Bradley, rather than a No Contest—heated arguments ensued from Campbell, his camp and promoter Don King.
Campbell told SHOWTIME reporter Jim Gray, with Bradley standing close by, “Of all the fighters in boxing, I am the only one who has fought anyone you put in front of me and I never complained about a decision. The camera caught it and the ref said it was a head butt. He never hurt me with nothing. I’m not mad with Tim. He did his job but this is wrong. I shouldn’t have that TKO on my record. It’s wrong.”
To Bradley, Campbell said, “Be fair. Be honest (about the decision). It’s about what is right and what is wrong.”
Mendoza stood by his decision, explaining to Gray, “They both were head butting each other as they were fighting and after that last head butt, Bradley threw a punch and that is when he started bleeding. The blood didn’t start coming out until the punch. The last thing I saw before the blood started coming out was a punch and I have to go with a punch.”
When it was Bradley’s turn to talk, he said, “I don’t know, I was just in there fighting. I felt our heads collide and I see him get a cut. But I attacked and the ref was doing his job. I don’t know what’s going on. I’m here doing my job taking care of my business in the ring. It’s not my job and not my problem. It didn’t even matter. He was going to get beat tonight anyway. As the rounds kept going on, he was getting older and older.”
In the co-feature, Alexander, of St. Louis, Mo., was able to withstand and eventually conquer the unorthodox fighting style of England’s Witter. Witter, who kept switching stances and throwing wild shots, wasn’t able to hurt Alexander who kept moving forward. After the eighth round Witter walked over to Alexander and told him and his corner that he could not go on.
After the fight Witter explained, “My elbow went in the fourth round and basically I couldn’t keep him off with one hand. I battled through for a few rounds. I kept switching, which was working to an extent, but I couldn’t box the way I wanted to. I didn’t feel good. I didn’t feel good at all.”
When asked if the decision was his or came from his corner, “It was a mutual agreement. We decided to let this one go. As much as I wanted to do it, I just wasn’t able to. It’s not that I wanted to quit, I wanted to win. I think it was a close fight.”
Witter was down 80-72 twice and 79-73 on the official judges scorecards.
Witter followed by saying this would not be his last fight but that he just needed to get with his promoter and trainers and decide what the next move will be.
An extremely emotional Alexander was humbled by the win and remembered his father who passed away when he was a teenager. He said, “This feels good, baby. This is to my dad. I got it now. I got it. I train hard everyday. I didn’t miss a day at the gym when I was an amateur and I stay dedicated through my professional career. Now, I have the green belt, the title. My coach (Kevin Cunningham) never gave up on me and now I got it. I had Don King with me and he never gave up on me. We are taking it back to St. Louis.”
The 22-year old continued, “I’ve got a dynamite team and we had a game plan. We had an A-plan, a B-plan, and a C-plan. We had all of it. I told him in the press conference there is nothing he could do in the ring to stop me from walking out with that belt.”

WBA champ Campillo hits road to defend title vs. Shumenov August 15 in Astana, Kazakhstan
LAS VEGAS– World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo is a true road warrior who defends his title belt for the first time August 15th against undefeated light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov at Palace of Sports “Kazakhstan” in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The Aug. 15th show will be presented by KZ Event Productions, owned and operated by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, in association with Sampson Boxing, LLC.
Campillo (18-2, 6 KOs) is a slick Spanish southpaw who last month (June 20) traveled to Argentina and won a 12-round majority decision as a decisive underdog, taking the WBA crown from Argentinean favorite and defending title-holder, Hugo Hernan Garay (32-3).
Fighting 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (8-0, 6 KOs), reigning International Boxing Association title-holder, in the Kazak’s home country doesn’t faze Campillo because of his history of success in other fighter’s backyards. He won the European Union super middleweight championship this past March by 12-round decision against a Dane, Lolenga Mock, in Denmark.
“I went to Argentina as an underdog,” Campillo explained. “I was well prepared and I defeated him (Garay) the same way that I am planning to beat Shumenov in his own backyard. I agreed to fight Shumenov because none of he other champions risk their titles and I plan to defend my title against anybody that challenges me. To be a great champion, you have to defeat the best, and Shumenov is one of them.
“I am a pure boxer and my plan is to box Shumenov. I will win by decision but I do not discount the possibility of a late knockout. The only date that I am looking at is August 15th. I will not entertain any future fights now because my mind is set on Beibut Shumenov. All of Spain is behind me and I will not betray my country.”
The 25-year-old Beibut will make history if he defeats Campillo in his ninth pro fight, eight less than the fewest ever for a world light heavyweight champion, Michael Spinks (17). A Kazakhstan native now residing and training in Las Vegas, Beibut is currently rated No. 9 by the WBA. Two months ago in his hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan, he stopped former world champion Byron Mitchell in the fourth round, continuing his ambitious pace that also includes victories against former world champion Montell Griffin and world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza, respectively, by 12 and 10 round decisions.
Two other members of KZ Event Productions, 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov and Uzbekistan light middleweight Ravshan Hudayaynazarov, will also be showcased on the August 15th card.
Ahmedov (11-0-1, 7 KOs) takes on former Eastern & Central African titlist Douglas “Daggy” Otieno (19-1, 9 KOs) in the 12-round co-feature for the vacant PABA and WBO Pacific light heavyweight titles, recently relinquished by Shumenov. Hatton backing Macklin to conquer Europe and the World
Ricky Hatton is backing British Middleweight Champion Matthew Macklin to conquer Europe and the World over the next 12 months. The Birmingham man is the latest addition to Hatton’s new promotional outfit and “The Hitman” has moved quickly to secure a European title shot for his newest signing.
Macklin will contest the vacant European Middleweight title with World ranked Finn, Amin Asikainen at the Manchester Velodrome on September 25th as he looks to move within touching distance of a World title fight. Having won 5 World titles himself Hatton knows exactly what it takes to get to the very top and he believes that Macklin has all the right ingredients.
Hatton, who has yet to make a decision on his own ring career said, “I’ve had my fair share of success with World titles in the ring but now I want to start producing World Champions as a promoter and I firmly believe that Matthew Macklin will be one of them.
“I’ve known Matthew for a long time, we’ve trained together, sparred together and worked each others corners over the years and I’ve always believed that he has the ability to go all the way. He won the British title in very impressive fashion last time out and I think he has the ability to step straight up to European title level and I’m delighted to be able to give him that opportunity on one of my shows.”
However Hatton believes that Asikainen represents a huge challenge for Macklin. “Matthew’s facing a very tough challenge because Asikainen is a vastly experienced operator and he’s been European Champion before but I believe that it’s a fight Matthew can win and use as a spring board to a World title fight next year.”
Macklin says he’d delighted to be linking up with long time friend Hatton and he’s already looking ahead to September 25th. “It’s fitting that I’m working with Ricky as my promoter now because we’ve been good friends for so long. We’ve probably sparred over a hundred rounds together and we’ve always supported each other throughout our careers.
“Ricky promised that he would deliver me the big fights and in my very first fight with him I’ll be fighting for the European title so it’s a huge opportunity for me. I’ve seen quite a bit of Asikainen and I’ve got a lot of respect for him because he’s been campaigning at European title level for the last three years. He’s a big puncher and brings all that experience to the table but he has frailties as well and I believe I’ll be able to set a pace that he can’t cope with.”
Macklin believes he can use the European title as a launch pad to a World title shot next year. “I really feel that things are starting to come together for me now since winning the British title. To be honest I had planned on winning the British title a lot earlier in my career. I’m 27 now so the next few years are going to the most important so when the chance at the European title came along I knew I had to grab it.
“The European middleweight scene is red hot right now and particularly in Germany where they seem to be dominating the division even on the World stage. Obviously Arthur Abraham has just moved up to super middleweight and you have Sebastian Zbik who just won the interim WBC title while Felix Sturm has held the WBA title for the last 3 years.
“Another German, Sebastian Sylvester is fighting for the vacant IBF title in September and Asikainen is rated number 4 with the IBF so a win over him would leave me knocking on the door of a World title shot.”
Asikainen however has World title ambitions of his own and is also targeting a rubber match with old foe Sylvester, the two rivals currently have one win apiece in European title fights.
“Winning the European title for the second time would be great,” said Asikainen. “The European title is the most meaningful belt in boxing after the World title. Of course I dream of winning the World title too some day but right now I am totally focused on Matthew Macklin.”
The flying Finn says that fighting on away ground holds no fears for him. “Coming to Manchester to fight is not a problem for me. As an amateur I fought several times outside Finland and as a pro I have won 3 of my 4 fights abroad including a knockout win over Sebastian Sylvester in Germany. Actually I think that fighting away from home kind of suits me better as it takes some of the pressure off.
“I have power in both hands. I knocked out Sylvester with my left hand and I stopped Yori Boy Campas with my right hand so I am armed and dangerous. I am known as a knockout artist, but I never come looking for the knockout. If it happens, it happens but I will prepare for twelve hard rounds and I believe I can win either on points or by KO.”
Asikainen’s promoter Pekka Maki is equally bullish about his fighter’s chances. “Macklin is not a bad fighter, he has heart and skills but I see some big weaknesses as well. He makes a lot of mistakes in the ring and if you make mistakes against Amin Asikainen you will get knocked out.

Macklin will contest the vacant European Middleweight title with World ranked Finn, Amin Asikainen at the Manchester Velodrome on September 25th as he looks to move within touching distance of a World title fight. Having won 5 World titles himself Hatton knows exactly what it takes to get to the very top and he believes that Macklin has all the right ingredients.
Hatton, who has yet to make a decision on his own ring career said, “I’ve had my fair share of success with World titles in the ring but now I want to start producing World Champions as a promoter and I firmly believe that Matthew Macklin will be one of them.
“I’ve known Matthew for a long time, we’ve trained together, sparred together and worked each others corners over the years and I’ve always believed that he has the ability to go all the way. He won the British title in very impressive fashion last time out and I think he has the ability to step straight up to European title level and I’m delighted to be able to give him that opportunity on one of my shows.”
However Hatton believes that Asikainen represents a huge challenge for Macklin. “Matthew’s facing a very tough challenge because Asikainen is a vastly experienced operator and he’s been European Champion before but I believe that it’s a fight Matthew can win and use as a spring board to a World title fight next year.”
Macklin says he’d delighted to be linking up with long time friend Hatton and he’s already looking ahead to September 25th. “It’s fitting that I’m working with Ricky as my promoter now because we’ve been good friends for so long. We’ve probably sparred over a hundred rounds together and we’ve always supported each other throughout our careers.
“Ricky promised that he would deliver me the big fights and in my very first fight with him I’ll be fighting for the European title so it’s a huge opportunity for me. I’ve seen quite a bit of Asikainen and I’ve got a lot of respect for him because he’s been campaigning at European title level for the last three years. He’s a big puncher and brings all that experience to the table but he has frailties as well and I believe I’ll be able to set a pace that he can’t cope with.”
Macklin believes he can use the European title as a launch pad to a World title shot next year. “I really feel that things are starting to come together for me now since winning the British title. To be honest I had planned on winning the British title a lot earlier in my career. I’m 27 now so the next few years are going to the most important so when the chance at the European title came along I knew I had to grab it.
“The European middleweight scene is red hot right now and particularly in Germany where they seem to be dominating the division even on the World stage. Obviously Arthur Abraham has just moved up to super middleweight and you have Sebastian Zbik who just won the interim WBC title while Felix Sturm has held the WBA title for the last 3 years.
“Another German, Sebastian Sylvester is fighting for the vacant IBF title in September and Asikainen is rated number 4 with the IBF so a win over him would leave me knocking on the door of a World title shot.”
Asikainen however has World title ambitions of his own and is also targeting a rubber match with old foe Sylvester, the two rivals currently have one win apiece in European title fights.
“Winning the European title for the second time would be great,” said Asikainen. “The European title is the most meaningful belt in boxing after the World title. Of course I dream of winning the World title too some day but right now I am totally focused on Matthew Macklin.”
The flying Finn says that fighting on away ground holds no fears for him. “Coming to Manchester to fight is not a problem for me. As an amateur I fought several times outside Finland and as a pro I have won 3 of my 4 fights abroad including a knockout win over Sebastian Sylvester in Germany. Actually I think that fighting away from home kind of suits me better as it takes some of the pressure off.
“I have power in both hands. I knocked out Sylvester with my left hand and I stopped Yori Boy Campas with my right hand so I am armed and dangerous. I am known as a knockout artist, but I never come looking for the knockout. If it happens, it happens but I will prepare for twelve hard rounds and I believe I can win either on points or by KO.”
Asikainen’s promoter Pekka Maki is equally bullish about his fighter’s chances. “Macklin is not a bad fighter, he has heart and skills but I see some big weaknesses as well. He makes a lot of mistakes in the ring and if you make mistakes against Amin Asikainen you will get knocked out.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT INKS FEATHERWEIGHT PROSPECT LUIS DEL VALLE; LOOKS TOWARDS PUERTO RICAN MARKET
DiBella Entertainment has continued its streak of signing the best young talent in boxing by inking unbeaten featherweight Luis Del Valle. Del Valle (5-0, 3 KOs) is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico and signifies another step in DBE’s growing presence on the island.Del Valle, now fighting out of Newburgh, NY, made an impression at a young age coming through the amateur ranks. His triumphs include first place finishes at the 2004 National Golden Gloves, 2005 Under 19 National Amateur Championship, and 2006 Six Nations Cup.
Now five fights into his pro career, his skill set looks like it is transferring seamlessly from the amateur to professional ranks. His sixth fight, and DBE debut, will take place August 26 as a part of Broadway Boxing at BB King Blues Club & Grill in the heart of Times Square.

CES Promoting 3 shows in 3 states Within 10 days in September
PROVIDENCE– Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) has announced that it will promote three professional boxing cards, in three different states, within 10 days of each other in September.
CES, in association with the State of New York, in conjunction with the International Boxing Hall of Fame, will run a show Wednesday, Sept. 2 at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. Two days later (Friday, Sept. 4), CES returns home to Twin River Event Center in Lincoln (RI) and a week after that show, (Friday, Sept. 11) “The Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor Fight Series” continues at Plymouth (MA) Memorial Hall.
“It’s a great challenge but we have a talented staff that will share responsibilities,” Burchfield explained. “Different staff people will be delegated specific duties for each show. We’ve done it before. We’re honored and proud to be promoting this special show. There will be a lot of boxing celebrities there. The shows at Twin River and Plymouth Memorial Hall will feature some of the top talent in New England.”
A press conference will be held next Thursday (August 6, 1 PM/ET) at the Fair Grounds in Syracuse to formally announce the card.

Mikkel Kessler To Defend WBA Super-Middleweight Title Against Perdomo On SHOWTIME From Herning, Denmark

NEW YORK— Talented World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Mikkel “Viking Warrior’’ Kessler of Copenhagen, Denmark, will make his eagerly awaited debut on SHOWTIME earlier than expected.
One of the early favorites in the upcoming Super Six World Boxing Classic™, Kessler (41-1, 31 KOs) will make a mandatory title defense against No. 1 ranked Gusmyl Perdomo (16-2, 10 KOs) of Turmero, Venezuela, on a special Saturday primetime edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, on SHOWTIME, Sept. 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT (same day tape delay).
The 12-round matchup, announced Monday, will be Kessler’s second WBA 168-pound title defense and his first start since Oct. 25, 2008. Sauerland Event will promote Kessler vs. Perdomo from MCH Messecenter Herning in Herning, Denmark, Kessler’s home turf. This is the first fight for Kessler since signing a new contract with Team Sauerland.
“I am happy to be back in the ring,” said Kessler, who is slated to face undefeated 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist Andre "S.O.G." Ward on Nov. 21, in the first group stage of the talent-laden Super Six World Boxing Classic, a six-fighter super middleweight tournament.
“As the mandatory challenger, Perdomo deserves to fight for the title (but) I want to take my WBA belt into the tournament.
“(This) is the last obstacle that I need to overcome. I will be prepared and I will be ready. I will definitely not underestimate him.”
Perdomo is a capable, game southpaw who fights out of Germany. He has won two straight and seven of his last eight. He has never been knocked out.
Perdomo’s only defeats came on points to German contenders Mario Veit on a majority decision and to Dmitry Sartison, who would go on to challenge Kessler, in a tight fight the German-based Venezuelan lost by only one point on two of the scorecards and two points on the other.

“FIGHT NIGHT AT FRONTIER” RETURNS TO ROCHESTER AUGUST 13 FEATURING RONALD HEARNS, UNBEATEN PROSPECTS
DiBella Entertainment and Resnick Productions are teaming up to bring the next installment of “Fight Night at Frontier” to boxing fans at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY on Thursday, August 13. Headlining the show will be junior middleweight contender Ronald Hearns, supported by fights featuring the best young talent upstate New York and the rest of the country has to offer.
Hearns (21-1, 17 KOs), son of former middleweight champion Tommy Hearns, has already shown the power and polish in his young career that made his father a star. That prowess will be tested when he squares off with grizzled veteran Patrick Thompson (15-14-1, 5 KOs). “Fight Night at Frontier” fans will certainly remember Hearns’ first appearance on the series - a devastating second round knockout of Edson Aguirre in 2007.
Lou DiBella, the event’s co-promoter, is thrilled to be bringing a world class talent like his fighter, Ronald Hearns, to the fans in Rochester to headline what promises to be a memorable night at Frontier Field.

“There is no doubt Ronald Hearns has all the tools to challenge for a world title,” said DiBella. “He has all the skills, and of course the power, that comes with his last name. Fans in Rochester are in for a treat when they see just how good Ronald can be.”
The undercard will showcase a pair of young, local fighters being co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Resnick Productions – Willie Monroe, Jr., and Aleem “Hammer” Whitfield – along with DBE’s explosive light heavyweight prospect out of Detroit, Isiah Thomas, and rising super middleweight Jonathan Nelson of Little Rock, AR.
Monroe (5-0, 2 KOs), of Rochester, NY, has only been a pro for 16 months, but already he has taken the local boxing scene by storm, contesting all but one of his bouts in Rochester. In his sixth pro contest he again hopes to excite his hometown fan base with another electric performance as he continues his campaign in the middleweight division.
Whitfield, of Geneva, NY, is another product of the area, and will be looking for a big start to his professional career when he makes his pro debut on the show. An accomplished amateur whose successes included a second place finish at the 2008 National Golden Gloves, Whitfield has already gained notoriety away from the ring after being featured in an episode of the ABC hit show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Thomas (4-0, 4 KOs), of Detroit, MI, is perfect thus far in his young career, having knocked out every fighter he’s stepped in with. A southpaw with seasoned boxing skills and tremendous power, Thomas will bring his show on road to Rochester in an attempt to keep his impressive knockout streak intact.
Nelson (10-0, 5 KOs), a stablemate of former undisputed middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor, has been making a name for himself at 168-lbs. With three wins thus far in 2009, Nelson will look to build on an already impressive year in the ring.
Co-promoter Ron Resnick is excited about bringing such a well rounded card to the city of Rochester.

Hearns (21-1, 17 KOs), son of former middleweight champion Tommy Hearns, has already shown the power and polish in his young career that made his father a star. That prowess will be tested when he squares off with grizzled veteran Patrick Thompson (15-14-1, 5 KOs). “Fight Night at Frontier” fans will certainly remember Hearns’ first appearance on the series - a devastating second round knockout of Edson Aguirre in 2007.
Lou DiBella, the event’s co-promoter, is thrilled to be bringing a world class talent like his fighter, Ronald Hearns, to the fans in Rochester to headline what promises to be a memorable night at Frontier Field.

“There is no doubt Ronald Hearns has all the tools to challenge for a world title,” said DiBella. “He has all the skills, and of course the power, that comes with his last name. Fans in Rochester are in for a treat when they see just how good Ronald can be.”
The undercard will showcase a pair of young, local fighters being co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Resnick Productions – Willie Monroe, Jr., and Aleem “Hammer” Whitfield – along with DBE’s explosive light heavyweight prospect out of Detroit, Isiah Thomas, and rising super middleweight Jonathan Nelson of Little Rock, AR.
Monroe (5-0, 2 KOs), of Rochester, NY, has only been a pro for 16 months, but already he has taken the local boxing scene by storm, contesting all but one of his bouts in Rochester. In his sixth pro contest he again hopes to excite his hometown fan base with another electric performance as he continues his campaign in the middleweight division.
Whitfield, of Geneva, NY, is another product of the area, and will be looking for a big start to his professional career when he makes his pro debut on the show. An accomplished amateur whose successes included a second place finish at the 2008 National Golden Gloves, Whitfield has already gained notoriety away from the ring after being featured in an episode of the ABC hit show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Thomas (4-0, 4 KOs), of Detroit, MI, is perfect thus far in his young career, having knocked out every fighter he’s stepped in with. A southpaw with seasoned boxing skills and tremendous power, Thomas will bring his show on road to Rochester in an attempt to keep his impressive knockout streak intact.
Nelson (10-0, 5 KOs), a stablemate of former undisputed middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor, has been making a name for himself at 168-lbs. With three wins thus far in 2009, Nelson will look to build on an already impressive year in the ring.
Co-promoter Ron Resnick is excited about bringing such a well rounded card to the city of Rochester.

NEW YORK– Crafty former light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver will join ShoBox: The New Generation announcers Nick Charles and Steve Farhood as a guest commentator on the telecast live Friday, July 31, on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Tarver, the former undisputed 175-pound world champion, is the only man to stick two losses on the professional resume of future Hall of Famer Roy Jones, Jr.
Said Tarver about his SHOWTIME commentating debut, “I’d like to think that I am more than a boxer; I’m an on air personality. My experience as both an amateur and professional boxer will bring insight to the telecast. Nick and Steve are phenomenal at what they do and I’m just excited to be able to add the element of experience. I can let the audience at home know what these boxers are feeling at a very difficult time. So many things go through your mind and I understand the anxiety, the desperation, the excitement, and when you’re in a tricky spot, the fear.”
Tarver, still considered one of the best boxers in his era, continues to train and dedicate himself to furthering his boxing career. “By no means does this signal my retirement or the end of my boxing career. This is just another aspect to my career. I’m in the gym, I’m training and I’ll be fighting again this year.”

Undefeated WBC No. 1-Ranked Super Lightweight Opens His Final Workout to the Media
ST. LOUIS—Undefeated World Boxing Council No. 1-ranked super lightweight and mandatory challenger Devon Alexander “The Great” opened his final workout today to the media in his hometown Marquette Gym in St. Louis prior to departing for Rancho Mirage, Calif., to make his first appearance in a world championship boxing match.
Alexander will face former WBC super lightweight champion Junior “The Hitter” Witter on Aug. 1 for the same title that was recently vacated by Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley, who, ironically, is fighting on the same SHOWTIME-televised doubleheader (9 p.m. ET/PT) at Agua Caliente Casino, Resort and Spa against former unified lightweight world champion Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell.
“I’ve watched tapes on Junior Witter,” Alexander said. “He’s a crafty, slick fighter that likes to take pot shots at you when he gets the opportunity. My goal is to give him something where he will not be able to stay with that all night. I want to dominate him for 12 rounds. I want to be smart and aggressive at the same time.”
Alexander has had the same promoter, Don King, since he turned professional and the same trainer, Kevin Cunningham, since he began boxing as an amateur.

Alexander will face former WBC super lightweight champion Junior “The Hitter” Witter on Aug. 1 for the same title that was recently vacated by Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley, who, ironically, is fighting on the same SHOWTIME-televised doubleheader (9 p.m. ET/PT) at Agua Caliente Casino, Resort and Spa against former unified lightweight world champion Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell.

Team Ruiz: Valuev-Haye Wishful Arrogance
LAS VEGAS– Team Ruiz believes a potential World Boxing Association title fight title between champion Nicolai Valuev and David Haye is nothing more than a matter of wishful arrogance.
Team Ruiz has already contacted the WBA inform the WBA Championship Committee that WBA mandatory challenger, 2-time WBA heavyweight John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), will not stand by and allow the reported Valuev-Haye title fight in November.
Despite reports from both camps, Valuev-Haye has not been sanctioned as a WBA title fight, and cannot be without a special permit being requested, filed and passed. Ruiz is the mandatory challenger, Valuev’s deadline for his yearly mandatory defense is August 30, and Haye isn’t rated by the WBA.
Ruiz’ advisor and attorney, Anthony Cardinale, and prominent boxing lawyer, Judd Burstein, emailed all concerned parties the following:
“There has been a recent press release quoting David Haye as claiming that he has come to an agreement to fight Nicolai Valuev for the WBA title this coming November. I am writing to inform the WBA Championship Committee that John Ruiz, the WBA Heavyweight Official Challenger, will not stand by and allow such a bout to take place.

“First, Valuev must honor his mandatory obligation to John Ruiz.
“Valuev won the title on August 30th, 2008 and had an interim title fight against Evander Holyfield last December, when the WBA ranked Holyfield out of nowhere to accommodate Valuev and his promoter. Following that Holyfield bout, Valuev was scheduled to fight (Ruslan) Chagaev last April to clear up the heavyweight title situation. On behalf of Mr. Valuev, Mr. (Pat) English claimed that the Chagaev fight was the equivalent of a mandatory bout, requiring Mr. Ruiz to wait a year for a chance. Chagaev was, however, medically declared unfit. Since, he then fought, in violation of specific WBA rules, for the IBF and WBO championships, and lost. Therefore, he no longer may be considered the WBA champion.
“Accordingly, with a year since his last championship victory about to pass, Valuev must fight his next bout as his mandatory against Mr. Ruiz. John Ruiz will not sit by and permit another delay so that Valuev can have another interim fight, especially against another opponent who is not even rated by the WBA. If the WBA Regulations are to have any meaning, there can be no other result. BROADWAY BOXING FEATURING JOELO TORRES RETURNS TO NYC ON AUGUST 26
DiBella Entertainment is bringing its signature series, Broadway Boxing, back to the place it was meant to be: under the bright lights of New York City. The popular series will return August 26th and BB Kings Blues Club & Grill in the heart of Times Square. The main event will feature unbeaten junior welterweight Joelo Torres (10-0-1, 6 KOs) of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
The undercard is already shaping up as former Olympian Argenis Mendez, unbeaten heavyweight Tor Hamer, and exciting youngsters Luis Del Valle and Eddie Irizarry are on tap to perform.

Promoter Lou DiBella is excited by what is in store for fight fans when Broadway Boxing returns to New York City, featuring some of the world’s best young talent.
“There’s no place like New York City for boxing, and there’s no place for boxing in New York City like BB Kings,” said DiBella. “It brings me great pleasure to bring the Broadway Boxing series back to Times Square, and I promise to deliver a night of hot, summer action.”
Since its inception, the mission of Broadway Boxing has been to bring the world’s most exciting young fighters to forefront. Joelo Torres certainly fits the bill. Not only does he boast an undefeated record, but his power has been evident as of late, with four of his last five wins coming by way of knockout.
Already a popular fighter in his native country, Torres now has his sights set on making a name for himself in the big city.
“This is my second home,” said Torres. “I’m always excited to come to New York, especially to fight on Broadway Boxing. I can’t wait for the bell to ring and show the fans what I’m made of.”
The co-feature will showcase Mendez (13-1, 8 KOs), who represented the Dominican Republic at the 2004 Olympic Games, and is one of the newest additions to the DiBella Entertainment stable. His slick, yet crowd pleasing style, has made him widely recognized as one fighter to keep an eye on in the years to come. In his last fight, Mendez returned home to the Dominican Republic to win a decision over Arturo Gomez.
Hamer (7-0, 6 KOs), fighting out of New York, NY, is already on the fast track to being boxing’s next sensation in the heavyweight division. A graduate of Penn State University and with an education in power, Hamer stole the show in his last fight - a brutal first round knockout of Marcus Dickerson.
Del Valle (5-0, 3 KOs), fighting out of Newburgh, NY, was one of the most accomplished amateurs in the world, and is no stranger to the Broadway Boxing audience. In his last fight Del Valle, whose amateur triumphs include first place finishes at the 2004 National Golden Gloves and the 2005 Under 19 National Amateur Championships, won a 4-round unanimous decision over Tommy Atencio in front of a packed crowd at BB Kings.

Promoter Lou DiBella is excited by what is in store for fight fans when Broadway Boxing returns to New York City, featuring some of the world’s best young talent.
“There’s no place like New York City for boxing, and there’s no place for boxing in New York City like BB Kings,” said DiBella. “It brings me great pleasure to bring the Broadway Boxing series back to Times Square, and I promise to deliver a night of hot, summer action.”
Since its inception, the mission of Broadway Boxing has been to bring the world’s most exciting young fighters to forefront. Joelo Torres certainly fits the bill. Not only does he boast an undefeated record, but his power has been evident as of late, with four of his last five wins coming by way of knockout.
Already a popular fighter in his native country, Torres now has his sights set on making a name for himself in the big city.
“This is my second home,” said Torres. “I’m always excited to come to New York, especially to fight on Broadway Boxing. I can’t wait for the bell to ring and show the fans what I’m made of.”
The co-feature will showcase Mendez (13-1, 8 KOs), who represented the Dominican Republic at the 2004 Olympic Games, and is one of the newest additions to the DiBella Entertainment stable. His slick, yet crowd pleasing style, has made him widely recognized as one fighter to keep an eye on in the years to come. In his last fight, Mendez returned home to the Dominican Republic to win a decision over Arturo Gomez.
Hamer (7-0, 6 KOs), fighting out of New York, NY, is already on the fast track to being boxing’s next sensation in the heavyweight division. A graduate of Penn State University and with an education in power, Hamer stole the show in his last fight - a brutal first round knockout of Marcus Dickerson.
Del Valle (5-0, 3 KOs), fighting out of Newburgh, NY, was one of the most accomplished amateurs in the world, and is no stranger to the Broadway Boxing audience. In his last fight Del Valle, whose amateur triumphs include first place finishes at the 2004 National Golden Gloves and the 2005 Under 19 National Amateur Championships, won a 4-round unanimous decision over Tommy Atencio in front of a packed crowd at BB Kings.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ- This Friday night, former WBA Heavyweight champion of the world Bruce "The Atlantic City Express" Seldon will take on former two-time world-title challenger Fres Oquendo, in Chicago, and Seldon just wrapped up what he calls the most complete camp he has ever had.
Seldon has been training relentlessly for a fight that he is touting as "My heavyweight championship fight."

NEW YORK – Talented, once-beaten prospect Marvin Quintero (16-1, 12 KOs) hopes to continue his ascension through the ranks with a win over hard-hitting veteran Tyrone Harris (23-5, 15 KOs) in a 10-round junior lightweight bout on Friday, July 31, live on ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
In the co-feature, undefeated bantamweight prospect Chris Avalos (10-0, 8 KOs) will take on knockout artist Andre Wilson (11-2-1, 9 KOs) in an eight-round bantamweight bout.
The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and will originate from Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif.
Quintero has won his last two fights on ShoBox and 12 in a row, including nine by knockout, since his lone professional loss on Aug. 9, 2005. The 22-year-old has registered knockouts in more than 70 percent of his fights.
Quintero, who is from Julio Cesar Chavez's hometown of Culiacan, Mexico, is a speedy southpaw with solid boxing skills. But the hard-hitting Mexican may have a weak chin; his sole loss came via first round knockout in his fifth professional fight. Since then he’s won 12 fights, nine by KO.
“Quintero is an aggressive, hard-punching lightweight prospect from Mexico who fights more than he boxes, often to the displeasure of his handlers,’’ said ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood. “In that sense, he reminds me of Antonio DeMarco, who slugged his way to a few wins on ShoBox and is now preparing to fight for a version of the 135-pound title.
“This will be Quintero's third appearance on ShoBox, so we'll be able to gauge in rate of improvement. One thing I've learned about prospects: You need to see them a few times before making sweeping conclusions. The first time I saw Quintero was in an off-TV fight, and he looked average. Since then, he's stepped it up.’’
“He's the quintessential ShoBox prospect and a fighter I always look forward to seeing in action.’’
In his last fight on May 1, on ShoBox, Quintero dominated Wes Ferguson over eight rounds winning an easy decision by the scores of 79-73 and 78-74 twice.
At the end of the second round Ferguson staggered Quintero and then swung big, missing and slipping to the canvas.
“I had my opportunities to knock him out but I wanted to prove to people that I could box,” Quintero said. “It was a very tough fight but none of his punches ever hurt me. I give myself a nine out of 10. I could have worked harder training for this fight.”
In his first ShoBox appearance and just his second in the United States, Quintero registered a third-round TKO over Nick Casal on Jan. 16, 2009.
Now, Quintero has a difficult challenge against the more experienced Harris. Eight of Harris’ 15 knockout victories have come in the first round, so Quintero, who has proven he is vulnerable early, has to watch out for the flash-KO.
“I know I have to keep winning if I want to climb up the division,” Quintero said. “This is a big fight for me. I want to be a world champion, but first I have to beat this Harris. Believe me, I’m ready.”
The 28-year-old Harris, of Lansing, Mich., is looking to bounce back after a tough loss to No. 1- ranked World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 3 ranked World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight contender Urbano Antillon on May 1, 2009.
“This is a must win for me,” Harris said. “A win over a good prospect like this guy is exactly what I need to get my career back on track. “
ShoBox’s veteran play-by-play announcer Nick Charles agrees this is a fight that Harris needs to win.

Of the 19-year-olds’s eight knockouts, five have come in the first round.
“I’ve seen guys fighting on the big stage for the SHOWTIME cameras, but now it’s my chance,” Avalos said. “I’m ready for the big stage. I’m walking out of that ring undefeated.”
Charles hopes to see Avalos develop as a fighter in his first SHOWTIME appearance.
“I'm always genuinely excited to see somebody with skills and upside potential become a genuine prospect,” Charles said. “Chris, I'll be calling you're fight and also watching carefully from a critic’s perspective.”
The power-punching Wilson, of St. Joseph, Miss., will be hoping to end the fight early. Like Avaolos, he has had only two fights go past the fourth round.
“I’ll be looking for the KO,” said the 26-year-old Wilson. “This guy hasn’t lost and I plan on taking that away from him. I’ve been training hard and I’m ready.”

The Boxing Standard; No Holds Barred: Johnny Bos on the Cruel Business of Boxing
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary fight agent and boxing personality, Johnny Bos.
There are few if any people alive who know more about boxing than Johnny Bos. But instead of prospering from that knowledge and wisdom, last year Johnny Bos, the quintessential New Yorker, had to leave this faded but still sometimes active center of boxing for a town not known for being a pugilistic capital: Clearwater, Florida. The main reason was that he could no longer find work in this alleged sport.
Johnny's fortunes in boxing seemed to head swiftly downhill after an incident whose consequences, ironically, brought him back to the Big Apple this week. His fighter, former world champion Joey Gamache, was slated to fight the late Arturo Gatti in Madison Square Garden Feb. 26, 2000. At the weigh-in the day before, however, Bos and many others said that Gatti hopped on and off the scale without making the contracted weight of 141 pounds. While he objected to this, officials from the New York State Athletic Commission declared that Gatti had indeed made weight, and that the fight was on.
Gatti, who reportedly weighed 160 pounds on an unofficial HBO scale the day of the bout, proceeded to score a brutal second-round knockout. Gamache had to be taken to a hospital after it, nearly died there that night, and suffers from permanent brain damage. His career, of course, was over, although he does still train fighters.
Gamache then sued the New York State Athletic Commission for negligence for allegedly permitting Gatti to fight well over the contracted weight. After years of legal wrangling, that case was finally heard this past week, and this was why Johnny Bos returned to New York, in an unusual role as a witness on behalf of Joey Gamache.
We had a chance while he was still in New York, and after the trial itself was over, to speak with Johnny Bos. (A verdict by the trial judge is expected in several months.)

There are few if any people alive who know more about boxing than Johnny Bos. But instead of prospering from that knowledge and wisdom, last year Johnny Bos, the quintessential New Yorker, had to leave this faded but still sometimes active center of boxing for a town not known for being a pugilistic capital: Clearwater, Florida. The main reason was that he could no longer find work in this alleged sport.
Johnny's fortunes in boxing seemed to head swiftly downhill after an incident whose consequences, ironically, brought him back to the Big Apple this week. His fighter, former world champion Joey Gamache, was slated to fight the late Arturo Gatti in Madison Square Garden Feb. 26, 2000. At the weigh-in the day before, however, Bos and many others said that Gatti hopped on and off the scale without making the contracted weight of 141 pounds. While he objected to this, officials from the New York State Athletic Commission declared that Gatti had indeed made weight, and that the fight was on.
Gatti, who reportedly weighed 160 pounds on an unofficial HBO scale the day of the bout, proceeded to score a brutal second-round knockout. Gamache had to be taken to a hospital after it, nearly died there that night, and suffers from permanent brain damage. His career, of course, was over, although he does still train fighters.
Gamache then sued the New York State Athletic Commission for negligence for allegedly permitting Gatti to fight well over the contracted weight. After years of legal wrangling, that case was finally heard this past week, and this was why Johnny Bos returned to New York, in an unusual role as a witness on behalf of Joey Gamache.
We had a chance while he was still in New York, and after the trial itself was over, to speak with Johnny Bos. (A verdict by the trial judge is expected in several months.)

Godfrey relinquishes Sovereign Nations Boxing Council (SNBC) title
PROVIDENCE, World rated cruiserweight contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey has relinquished his Sovereign Nations Boxing Council (SNBC) belt so that worthy contenders may fight for it as he prepares for a major world title shot.
SNBC links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. Its mission is to develop, promote and help regulate professional boxing and mixed martial arts in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.
Godfrey (19-1, 10 KOs), a full-blooded Wampanoag, became the first SNBC champion last November, winning a unanimous 10-round decision against Edward Gutierrez at 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota.
Godfrey successfully defended his SNBC belt, as well as his NABF title, with a unanimous 10-round decision (99-91, 98-92, 97-93) against previously unbeaten Shawn “The Sioux Warrior” Hawk in the main event on a recent ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show in Philadelphia.
After their fight, Godfrey handed his SNBC title belt to Hawk, who grew-up on the Crow Creek Reservation, South Dakota. “I was honored to be the first SNBC champion and I am proud of my Native American heritage,” Matt explained. “I’ve relinquished the SNBC belt only because I am concentrating on a major world title fight and it’s only fair that others have the same opportunity to fight for the SNBC belt that I had. It’s very special to me because it’s the only Native American title in boxing. I handed it to Shawn as a goodwill gesture because he probably should have fought Gutierrez when I did. Hawk and I are both Native Americans, but he grew up on one of the toughest reservations, and I’m from the city. I meant no disrespect at all. Shawn has a lot of potential and he will win the SNBC belt soon.”
SNBC President Pat Packineau understood Godfrey’s gesture. “Matt Godfrey was a great first SNBC champion and we wish him luck when he fights for a world title. All Native Americans will be in his corner. We were honored to have him as our cruiserweight champion. We appreciate him giving other contenders an opportunity. Shawn Hawk is scheduled to fight for the now vacant SNBC cruiserweight title on October 24 at 4 Bears Casino.”
The 28-year-old Godfrey, rated No. 10-ranked by The Ring magazine, as well a No. 3 by the IBF and No. 6 by the WBC, took a different approach to his fight against Hawk, effectively boxing as a southpaw, opposed to his three previous ESPN FNF knockout performances against Emmanuel Nwodo, Felix Cora, Jr. and Shaun George.
Godfrey is primarily an orthodox fighter who often turns around and fights left-handed. Against Hawk, though, Matt fought exclusively as a southpaw. “I outclassed Hawk,” Godfrey said. “I kept him off-balance with my jab. We knew going in he had no experience fighting southpaws. If I kept circling, we knew he’d follow; my jab out of the southpaw stance kept him confused. It’s always good to have two weapons.
“I picked it up in the third round and hit him with some good shots. But he’s a tough, dangerous kid and there was no reason to change our plan when it was working so well. I always listen to my corner and I was told not to go crazy. I won nine rounds against a previously unbeaten fighter.”

WORLD RANKED LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT YUSAF "MACK ATTACK" MACK GIVES BACK TO COMMUNITY AND VISITS KIDS SCHOOL AND REHAB HOSPITAL
PHILADELPHIA— Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack had one of the most fulfilling days of his career and he did not even have to step in the ring to accomplish that.
Mack (28-2-2, 17 KO’s and is currently ranked #6 by The WBC, #7 by the WBA, and #6 by the IBF) spent this past Friday morning and afternoon giving back to his hometown community of Philadelphia.
Mack started the morning out by visiting the Education Works Program at 44th and Girard that is located in Mack’s hometown neighborhood of West Philadelphia.
Education Works is a program that enriches the lives of children, youth, and families by providing educational programs and services in communities confronting high rates of poverty and other barriers to educational achievement.
There are 17 Education Works programs spread throughout the city
Mack gave the kids a confident speech that encouraged the kids to do well in school and telling them the importance of school and education.
“It’s great to talk to these kids and they know after seeing me with my belts that if they put their mind to anything they can achieve any goal they set for themselves”, said Mack
“This stop was extra special because these are kids in my own backyard and I hope that I can be an influence for these youngsters. Education Works is a terrific program and over the coming months, I want to visit all seventeen locations.”
After Mack was done chatting up with the kids he trekked down to Magee Rehabilitation Center.
Magee Rehabilitation Center is the oldest physical rehabilitation hospital in the region which specializes in treating spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, stroke and orthopedic issues.
Mack posed for pictures with all of the patients and signed pictures in hopes of brightening up the day for these special need patients.
“These people are such an inspiration to me. They are the real fighters. To see what they have to go through really humbles me and it meant so much to me to be able to visit them and to see how receptive they were to me makes me want to train harder than ever because I want to be a bigger presence to these incredible men and woman and bring back the world Light Heavyweight championship”See you at the Fights.
