"'STAR POWER' is living up to its name as a mega-event with the addition of Canelo Alvarez vs. Alfonso Gomez," said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO Mayweather Promotions. "To have this event emanate from two separate locations like STAPLES Center and MGM Grand Garden Arena is a testament to the size and magnitude of the event and what it will deliver to the fans in the arenas and those watching at home on pay-per-view. Floyd is absolutely thrilled that Alvarez vs. Gomez will be a part of this show from Los Angeles."

"This is a historic and unprecedented night for boxing and Golden Boy Promotions as we showcase the extraordinary talents of Mayweather, Ortiz, Alvarez and Gomez from two iconic and world-renowned venues in STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the capitol of sports and entertainment and MGM Grand in Las Vegas, truly the boxing mega-center of the world," said Richard Schaefer, CEO Golden Boy Promotions. "September 17 at STAPLES Center will be a night to remember for boxing fans in Los Angeles as it will mark the first time the arena will host a boxing match, a pay-per-view viewing and a post-fight concert all on the same day," Lee Zeidman, STAPLES Center General Manager. Already Mexico's brightest young star, 21-year-old Canelo Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO's) of Guadalajara is quickly becoming an international sensation with fans around the world taking noting of his power and prowess in the ring and his charm and charisma outside of the ring. Following wins over former World Champions Carlos Baldomir and Lovemore N'Dou in 2010, Alvarez kicked off 2011 with a March victory over Matthew Hatton that earned him the WBC Super Welterweight World Championship. Three months later, Alvarez returned to Guadalajara for a homecoming title defense and victory over Ryan Rhodes that captivated a nation. With his American fan base growing at a meteoric pace, Alvarez will hold court in the City of Angels as he defends his title from STAPLES Center and fights for the Mexican people against ultra-tough Alfonso Gomez.

"I'm happy to come back to fight in Los Angeles at STAPLES Center for another Mexican Independence Day weekend," said Alvarez. "Alfonso Gomez is a good fighter and also from Guadalajara, Mexico. I hope the fight will be explosive because that is what the fans will be looking for between two Mexican warriors like us, but I feel confident I am going to win the fight."

A fan favorite who was present in American living rooms every week when he competed on "The Contender" reality show, Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KO's) has proven that he has what it takes to battle it out with the elite in the years since his stint on national television. The owner of wins over Arturo Gatti, Ben Tackie, and Jesse Brinkley, the 30-year old Los Angeles resident (who originally hails from Guadalajara) has also faced current WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto and Peter Manfredo Jr., but he is currently showing the best form of his 10-year career thanks to a five-fight winning streak that includes victories over Jesus Soto Karass and Jose Luis Castillo. Now, he prepares for his second world title shot as he takes on Canelo Alvarez on September 17.

"Canelo's popularity is great for him and for boxing," said Gomez. "I know Canelo's team thinks I'm just another notch on his belt, but it's not the first time a popular fighter made the same mistake. I've fought and beaten much better competition and I'm coming to win the world title. Canelo and I come from the same place and we are both Mexican warriors. I heard there's another fight happening in Las Vegas on September 17, but as far as I'm concerned, the best fight on that day will be at STAPLES Center. I can think of no better way to celebrate Mexican Independence Day weekend...Viva Mexico!"

THREE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION PAUL WILLIAMS AND UNDEAFEATED TWO-TIME WORLD AMATEUR CHAMPION ERISLANDY LARA

PAUL WILLIAMS: Hi everybody. I just want to say I am blessed to be back in the ring and put on a good show on July 9th. I can't wait to get back in there to show everybody that I'm not washed up and that the knockout did not overcome me. This is what I do.

DAN GOOSSEN: A Lot of great champions have gotten stopped over the years and gotten stopped with one punch. That is a staple of our business. And George will tell you the same thing. Lennox Lewis comes to mine, Vladimir Klitschko also.

GEORGE PETERSON: Of course if I had to write Paul's last chapter, I would have to hope that the situation wouldn't have happened with Martinez in his last fight such as it did. Because you know every great champion gets to a point where they want to show they are a true champion. Paul has achieved everything that he can except to show his greatness. This loss that happened gives him an opportunity to show his greatness and there is no other way it could happen. Paul Williams will be back July 9th.

Going back to the place where you had biggest victory and biggest defeat...

PAUL WILLIAMS: I got a lot of love from Atlantic City and I want to give my love right back. I really don't care where the fight is at, but I'm glad it is in Atlantic City - I just want to fight. I feel good that it is in Atlantic City.

GEORGE PETERSON: It doesn't matter where it is. Paul is an entertainer and he wants to entertain. He just needs the opportunity.

DAN GOOSSEN: Paul said it best. He's got some terrific fans in Atlantic City and there is no better place than to go there and perform again. We have our obstacles we have to overcome and this is just another one. This is what makes true champions. Paul Williams is a 3-time world champion and I guarantee he will be a 4-time world champion.

Do you think Paul still has the reputation of a fighter people want to avoid?

PAUL WILLIAMS: I don't think anything has changed because you still need to talk people to get in there and fight me. I think everything has been going the same.

GEORGE PETERSON: We don't want to fight down. We want to fight up. I don't know how many champions or ex-champions Paul has fought. Paul has been fighting everybody that no one has wanted to fight. That has happened and he got stopped in his last fight and now you are nailing this guy to the cross. He can't wait and I can't wait until this is resolved.

DAN GOOSSEN: I am not too much for arguing against anyone's opinion. I have no problem with them. Let them take the side that they want. Everyone has detractors, even the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali, has his detractors. Not only in defeat, but also in victory. The key is to get Paul back into the ring and show that the reputation he built up was well-deserved and I believe he'll go out there on July 9 and accomplish that. I believe we are going to be right back to where we were. We all believe Paul is going to come back stronger and better than ever because there is something about great champions coming back from adversity that makes them a better champion.

Are you motivated by "people jumping off the bandwagon?"

PAUL WILLIAMS: It really doesn't bother me if they jump on or jump off. I just want to go in there and put on a really good show for the people that are my fans that really love me.

Since the loss, Paul has been quiet...

PAUL WILLIAMS: No reason. The way I look at it, I took some time off to have some fun. Now it's back to business. Now why I never said anything - if I did say something - people would still have their opinions. I have to prove to them again, when I get in the ring to do my best. People just may be wondering what's going on.
Going back, would you change anything in the Martinez fight or was it just the one punch?

GEORGE PETERSON: There are no adjustments for that punch. It is a punch that is not seen. You can't make an adjustment for something you cannot see. It's like the wind blowing. We can't see the wind, but it's there. I have been hearing quite a lot about that punch and if we made an adjustment. You don't go to the gym every day and practice for a punch you don't see. It's as simple as that.

DAN GOOSSEN: We thought we were going to go with Ishida, but as the talks progressed, from the prospective of all of us, Lara was the more capable opponent. And George touched on it earlier; there really is no one Paul ever declined to face. There is something to be said about fighting young, hungry lions. Lara has been around like most of the Cuban fighters throughout the years and has a storied amateur background. These guys are tough fighters and you can't look past them. But on the other hand they come with great credentials and it's a great platform for Paul Williams.

Will there be a change in style?

GEORGE PETERSON: Paul Williams' style has gotten him 39 wins out of 41 fights. In addition to that, Paul has a wind over everyone that he fought. I see no reason, if you have 39 wins out of 41 fights; you want to change the style. If something is working, you keep it working. That's what happens in boxing. We'll go with what's working. What's working is what we'll go with.

Will there ever be a Williams-Martinez 3?

PAUL WILLIAMS: It's up to the fans and everybody. I'm down for it. I plan on 3 more fights. My manager is telling me 2 more. Once we get by Lara and the fans want it and HBO wants it - I want it.

DAN GOOSSEN: Believe me, the fans, HBO everyone will want it. It is a fight we'd love to do and I know Martinez' promoter Lou DiBella has made certain comments regarding the presentation of it. I'm not going to get into that now, but the bottom line is, we've got a tough nut to crack on July 9 with Lara. As has been true to Paul throughout his career, there has been no one that he wouldn't fight.

What are your opinions of the weight class you'll be fighting in?

PAUL WILLIAMS: It doesn't matter to me. Everyone talks about me as the 'catch-weight king.' Whatever weight they want me to be at is the weight where I'll go. '54, '47, and '50 - whatever weight Mr. Peterson, Dan and Al decide to go with, I'm there for it.

DAN GOOSSEN: Nothing has changed. He is going out there and showing the Punishment style again. Whether it is his weight or another division, it doesn't matter.

Was Lara an ideal guy to make a comeback?

PAUL WILLIAMS: It didn't matter to me who it was, as long as it was a live body that had some skills. I leave that to Mr. Peterson, Al and Dan.

GEORGE PETERSON: Like Paul mentioned, we just needed somebody in the ring to come back with. Somebody that we can make a statement on. This guy is supposed to be an outstanding fighter. 300 and some amateur fights and he's 16-0 and he's got power. So hey, it's just as well him or anybody else. What we need to do here is get this win. Every time we step in the ring, we know there is a possibility of him winning and a possibility of him losing. Our focus is winning and that's it.

PAUL WILLIAMS: I am going to make a statement regardless. I'm going to show him when I get in there and show my true greatness. For me, that is the best guy to get in the ring with - a guy that can take a punch. People that think I'm washed up I can prove to them it's not so. That is going to be the statement - me getting back in the ring to prove my point.

DAN GOOSSEN: The key is keeping it on the same vein. We move forward with Paul's career since we've been together to get someone to make the media to believe it's a great comeback fight. It's a tough one, whether he's a puncher or a mover, he's a qualified challenger. The best way to make a statement, whether you knock him out or beat him in 12-rounds, is to make it against someone that is considered a formidable foe. That's what we've got here on July 9th. You don't know what can happen when you walk in the ring - win or lose but we've been in this business long enough to know that it's a gamble no matter how many rounds it is. In most cases, you've got two men who want to win badly. There is always a risk but you lessen that risk with someone like a Paul Williams, who's going to go out there and prepare himself for whoever is going to be in that ring.

Were there problems finding a name guy as an opponent?

DAN GOOSSEN: When it comes to finding opponents for Paul Williams it has always been a problem, which is why we have him fight at 147, 154 and 160. Paul and George as always have been willing to do it. Rather then anyone turning down a fight, we were looking for someone to present a formidable task for Paul. The Ishida possibility had some sexiness to it because he stopped Kirkland in the first round. Lara obviously brings a whole new attitude - 300 amateur fights, 2-time amateur world champion, undefeated pro. It was more or less what we were looking for and we got that in Lara and that's where we are.

GEORGE PETERSON: If you've ever seen a Paul Williams fight, you know it's not a sleeping pill. You're not going to go to sleep on a Paul Williams fight. Most opponents know they have to fight 12-rounds. There are not going to be any points of rest in a Paul Williams fight. Most of the guys don't want opponents such as that - throwing 100 punches a round and who will throw more punches in the 12th round than the 1st round. Paul could fight at 147 and 154 - he is not a middleweight and could never make middleweight. The highest he can ever get and that is eating breakfast the day of the weigh-in is 157 lbs. This guy has been fighting out of his chosen weight class for the longest time. He'll fight anybody anytime and if you happen to look up his opponents, you'll find they are guys that no one else would fight. If I had another fighter would I fight Paul Williams? No, I wouldn't fight him.

PAUL WILLIAMS: I would love a gimme fight but they don't ever give me those kinds of fights. When I retire, I want my kids to say, 'he never ducked anybody. That's what I am building my legacy on. When people look at me, I want to remind them of a throwback fighter. I want to fight the best guys that no one else will fight. 'You put on a great show, whether you win or lose.' I am making my own history.

Cintron again?

PAUL WILLIAMS: I plan on fighting 2 or 3 more times. My manager wants 2. Before I hang my gloves up, Cintron and Martinez would be the two we are looking for. But it all depends on how Al, Dan and Mr. Peterson see if after this fight. Then I can talk about Martinez and see how it goes.

Thinking about retiring in 2012?

PAUL WILLIAMS: My business is going pretty good and I've got all my ducks in a row. Mr. Peterson said I' don't need this anymore. You became a 3-time world champion; you've got your money and your business. Do 2 more fights and give it up.

ERIC GOMEZ: We are very excited to be on this call and to be getting this fight against Paul Williams. I still consider Paul one of the top fighters pound-for-pound. He had a little bit of a setback but like all champions, hey; they get it up and show what they are made of. We don't expect anything different for this fight. It is a great opportunity for Lara and the kind of fight he's been waiting for and he's not taking Paul lightly and I think it should be a terrific fight.

ERISLANDY LARA: We just finished up some sparring. We are having a great camp and we are preparing for Paul Williams. We know everything he has done in his career but we are prepared for this fight.

Paul is tall, how do you prepare?

ERISLANDY LARA: I know Paul Williams is very tall for that weight class. We've got a kid here who is tall and been giving us great work is sparring. Edwin Rodriguez, who is a super middleweight, has been working with us. So we are ready for this guy mentally and physically.

What Paul Williams do you think you'll face?

ERISLANDY LARA: We are talking about a guy that is a 3-time world champion. I am not preparing for the Paul Williams that got knocked out in two rounds by Martinez. We are preparing for the Paul Williams that beat the Winky Wrights and guys like that. I have been waiting for this opportunity for a very long time and this is my chance to shine.

Where does it take him if he defeats Paul Williams?

ERIC GOMEZ: This is the kind of fight he has been waiting for his entire life. He was one of the top amateur fighters for many years. As a pro he has passed every test. This is the big show for him. This is his world title fight even though there is no title involved he is fighting one of the top fighters of our time. If he beats Paul Williams, we will be considered in all the big fights. - the Cotto's, the Alvarez' - all the jr. middleweights. This is going to open all the doors. It's going to be on HBO and whenever you get on HBO you have to shine. There is no tomorrow. He has to get past this fight.

Is there a possibility the winner get Canelo Alvarez?

ERIC GOMEZ: There is a possibility. We would look at every offer but we have to see what happens in this fight. It's a good fight and both are tough fighters. Williams is one of the best and we'll see what happens.

DAN GOOSSEN: I heard you mention Cotto - has that one been thought out?

ERIC GOMEZ: Obviously all the big names will be considered. You have a network like HBO that will make things happen and if the money's there it can happen. If Williams gets by Lara, the media and the fans will be pressing for big fights for him - with any of the champions.

You had a tough fight you last time out and were criticized, what makes you think you are ready for this?

ERISLANDY LARA: I took the last fight lightly and had a bad night. Anybody can have a bad night. This time it's going to be a different story. I am preparing for Paul Williams. I am not cutting any corners and of course, if I get past him I am ready for any of the champions.

What made the last fight so difficult?

ERISLANDY LARA: I was not prepared mentally or physically that night. I realized that if I am not prepared 100% I am better off nit fighting. It was more difficult than I had planned for and Molina is a very good fighter. I thought I won the fight clearly, 6-4. Going into this fight I knew it was a good wake-up call. I just got back in the gym and keep pressing.

How much of a risk is it to take a jump up in competition?

ERIC GOMEZ: It's always a risk when you are fighting a guy like Paul Williams. Before his last fight he was one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. A great champion and one of the best of our era. We feel it is time for Erislandy. He fought against Brewer and he dominated him - he won like every round. He fought Perez in a tough fight and won every round. The Carlos Molina fight was a draw and a close fight. Those guys took him through the fire and he came out unscathed and I think he's ready for a fight like this. He is not taking him lightly. If you are going to be something in this sport you've got to get through these tough fights.

What did he find difficult with Molina and how would it help against Williams?

LUIS DECOUBAS JR: He had knocked out the prior 4 guys and sometimes you think boxing gets easy and you tend to underestimate other opponents and that's how he overlooked Molina. Molina is a good fighter and has beaten a lot of good guys.

ERIC GOMEZ: I think we should be thanking Molina. If it weren't for Molina, we wouldn't be getting this fight. We should send him a fruit basket or something.

Do you think he's getting credit for fighting these tough guys?

LUIS DECOUBAS JR.: We fought Danny Perez and in his next fight gave the guy McEwen all he could handle in a draw. He knocked out Raines in one round and we feel that Williams is the right style for our guy.

ERIC GOMEZ: We feel that he is ready. He's beaten some of these guys. Grady brewer was a tough guy. Nobody gave Brewer a chance against Fernando Guererro but we found out he could still fight. Danny Perez is a tough fighter. These are guys that will test your fighter and you'll know what you have. Lara passed with flying colors and he beat them pretty much every round. This is going to be a hell of a fight. It is a big step up but you've got to jump on these opportunities. We feel he has a great shot at beating Paul Williams. When we beat Paul Williams we'll be a very good place.

SHOW ME SOMETHING GREAT' - JUNE 25; Devon Alexander, Lucas Matthysse, Tavoris Cloud and Yusaf Mack

"Show Me Something Great... in the 'Show Me' State!" featuring former WBC/IBF 140-pound champion Devon Alexander vs. WBO No. 3-ranked Lucas Matthysse and four world championships--a first in Missouri history.

TAVORIS CLOUD: I have been training 8 weeks for this fight. My game plan going in is to win the fight.

YUSAF MACK: I am working in the gym and looking for a win. Tavoris is a rough fighter and I’m just looking for a win and a good fight. He brings it and that is the type of fighter I like to fight. We are going to give the fans what they want to see. Come the 25th at the end of the fight I am going to have my hand raised.

You have a recent common opponent in Glen Johnson. Does that have any bearing on this fight?

YUSAF MACK: It is just the style of fight. Going in, I thought Johnson was old but in this fight I will stick to my game plan to win. I took Glen for granted. I should have looked right in front of me and taken care of business. This fight is going to be different and I’m going to show the world.

TAVORIS CLOUD: I looked at it and initially I dismiss that fight but still keep it inside my head that if he starts to fold under pressure, I go about things as usual. I am not expecting the same fighter. He had time to learn from his mistakes. I am expecting a better fighter since he is fighting for a world championship. I am expecting the best Yusaf Mack we have ever seen.

How much did the Johnson fight do for you?

TAVORIS CLOUD: I learned a lot from that fight. It was a good win as far as my confidence. I never had a lock of confidence when it comes to boxing and maybe that’s the reason why I am undefeated.

What kind of performance do you envision?

TAVORIS CLOUD: I don’t predict knockouts. The outcome and the performance I am looking for is a victory, nothing less than a victory. I respect every fighter that gets inside of the ring, especially with me. We just have to see how it will work out and the fashion that the fight will be won in, I don’t know yet, but hopefully it is in great fashion.

How does it affect the mentality going into the fight as a favorite?

TAVORIS CLOUD: It doesn’t affect me and I don’t let it affect me.

How do you beat Cloud?

YUSAF MACK: I don’t have a strategy – just win.

PERCY CUSTIS, Yusaf Mack’s trainer): We have been watching Tavoris and we know he’s a great fighter. We know he’s in shape and we know what we’re up against. We will do what we have to do and make adjustments as we go along on the day of the fight. Right now we are working on a lot of things that we normally do and the rest is up to him. Tavoris brings a lot of stuff to the ring and we don’t know what he’s going to do that day. We know one thing, we are in good shape and we’re ready to go.

YUSAF MACK: I am on my game and just ready. I want to put on a good show and hopefully get a good win. Steve Cunningham and Eddie Chambers (who were in camp with Yusaf), they have all been there before and I’ve been there before and they are pushing me.

With Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal fighting is there added pressure for you to be added into that conversation?

TAVORIS CLOUD: I am not thinking about those fights right now. The only fight I am thinking about is Yusaf Mack on June 25th. Other than that, no other fight matters to me right now.

What are your aspirations in the division?

TAVORIS CLOUD: My plan is to stay in the division and running it, unifying the titles as much as I can. I’m not going anywhere for a while.

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM, trainer and manager of Devon Alexander: I was training at this location [Colorado Springs] when I had Cory Spinks against Zab Judah in the first fight and you know how that turned out, so wait until you see this. We are in a town called Monument, Colorado. It’s about 20 miles north of Colorado Springs, 7500 feet above sea level. There are a bunch of ranches and farmland up here and it’s a beautiful place to train. I look out my window every morning and look at Pikes Peak. We didn’t run Pikes Peak, but we are at 7500 feet so we didn’t need that and we have had a great training camp.

DEVON ALEXANDER: It’s definitely good to be back. Training at the high altitude is great and the last time I was here was the USA Championships as an amateur. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we run the trail and on Tuesday and Thursday we run a monster hill and it’s going pretty good. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we are sparring and Tuesday and Thursday in the gym. So every day we are doing something hard. I am ready to rock and roll now.

ERIC GOMEZ, Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions: Lucas is obviously very excited for this opportunity. This is a great opportunity for him. He lost a very close decision to the IBF Champion Zab Judah. We know that Devon is a top-notch fighter and this is going to be a great fight.

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: I have been in Oxnard, California for two months and we are training out of the Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez training camp. This is a very important fight for me. It is going to be a tough fight. I have been training very hard and am in the last stages of preparation. This is going to be my last week of sparring. This is a very important fight, which I am dedicating to Argentina. It is great training here. It is my second time here. The first time I came over I spent three weeks for the Judah fight and I felt if I had been here longer it would have been better. So this time I have been here for two months and the preparation has been great. It’s tough training but I like it and it’s going to prepare me for this fight. Maravilla has been great and I’ve had the opportunity to train and spar with him a few times. He is one of the top southpaws in the game and it has helped my preparation and I’m very excited.

Have you gotten over the disappointment of the loss to Bradley?

DEVON ALEXANDER: No one likes to lose. I was upset for about a couple weeks but my coach was talking to me and it wasn’t like it was the end of the world. It’s not like Bradley dominated the fight. It was something I didn’t do. I didn’t follow the game plan. There were things I was supposed to be doing in the ring to come out with the victory and Bradley didn’t do anything that we didn’t prepare for in camp. It was all me and I definitely learned from that. Now I am back and ready to rock and roll. I just put it behind me and now I am 110%.

DON KING: We have the biggest show that has ever been in Missouri with four world title fights plus Devon Alexander “The Great” and Lucas Matthysse so we need to make certain the people get what they pay for and get what we promise. This event means a lot to me because I am a promoter of the people for the people and this is an example of that and that’s why I am appreciative of Kevin Cunningham who has been working with me and in the St. Louis area in the great state of Missouri. I have been in touch with the Mayors of St. Charles and St. Louis and the President of the St. Louis Board of Alderman to make this a real happening. It is going to take people like Devon Alexander, Kevin Cunningham as well as Eric Gomez and Lucas Matthysse to make this happen. And we have one of St. Charles’ own in Ryan Coyne challenging Guillermo Jones for the cruiserweight championship of the world, along with the guy that beat Cory Spinks, Cornelius Bundrage—they call him K-9—who is taking on Sechew Powell defending his title for the first time. We have a super hero who fought there before in Tavoris Cloud, the Thunder Cloud who is going to be defending his title against Yusaf Mack. And we put Cory Spinks back on who is looking for redemption from the loss to K-9. I will be arriving in St. Louis tonight (Tuesday, June 14) to work throughout the night of the fight. It means a lot to me to be turning 80 and have a birthday present and you bring these young men together to give them an opportunity to get them into the eyes of the world and it makes me feel good and not do it with knives or guns but with physical prowess and with understanding and love in their heart. They are going to go after it and do each other in. It is a great feeling for me and God bless America and it’s the greatest country in the world.

Talk about fighting in St. Charles.

DEVON ALEXANDER: It feels good and actually I will be fighting right around the corner from where I just moved. It’s going to feel good to get back in the ring in my hometown. My coach and I are preparing 120% to stay focused once we get there and will put on a spectacular performance for the fans in St. Louis.

Do you feel the loss was a blessing in disguise?

DEVON ALEXANDER: I hate to lose and even as an amateur I won every tournament I was in. That fight taught me I had to do what I needed to do, in any circumstance and any obstacle there is in that ring I need to get through it. I didn’t do what I was supposed to do and you saw the result of that. Whoever saw the fight saw that Bradley wasn’t better than me that night – it was all me and what I didn’t do. That’s why we are taking on a tough guy like Matthysse because the Bradley fight didn’t take anything out of me. It only motivated me to get in with the best and continue to fight the best. That’s why I am taking on one of the toughest guys in the division.

Lat time you fought here you thought you were distracted. What will happen this time?

DEVON ALEXANDER: At this point in my career every fight means everything. I have to stay focused no matter how high the stakes are or how low the stakes are, you have to stay focused and follow the game plan. At the end of the day it is going to be you and that guy in the ring and it’s who wins the game will win the fight. That’s what I learned.

Is Matthysse’s knockout power a concern?

DEVON ALEXANDER: Of course I will be concerned about whatever the other person’s strong trait is. We are prepared for that and ready to go 12 hard rounds. We know what we have in front of us and I am confident in my team that we have a strong game plan.

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: I call him Lucas ‘The Beast’ Matthysse. I think he’s a beast and he’s got the highest knockout percentage in the division and that makes him the biggest puncher in the division. We know exactly the challenge we have in front of us and this is exactly what we want. This fight is a lot more dangerous than the Tim Bradley fight. Devon has to be on his game. He is prepared and he has to be focused. These are the type of fights that if you want to claim you are the best in your division these are the types of fights you need to take on. A lot of guys think Maidana is the toughest guy in the division and I think it is Matthysse. He has a better punching style and better boxing skills. He is the most dangerous guy in the division and that’s what we are going to be dealing with n the 25th.

He knocked out Corley in short…

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: You are talking about Chop Chop and he is pretty much chopped liver. He is a strong guy and has a decent skill set. This is the type of guy that Devon will rebound with. Most guys coming off a loss are looking for an easy guy and that’s not what we are in business to do. We want to prove we are the best so we have to beat the best.

What did you gain from watching the Judah fight?

DEVON ALEXANDER: Nothing because he is not going to get the same thing he got from Zab with me. I think Zab is older and his legs are pretty much gone. I am fresher, younger and hungrier. I will be on him and throwing punches all night.

Does the criticism after your last loss weigh on you?

DEVON ALEXANDER: I am going to look spectacular. I learned from the loss against Bradley. I want to beat him and beat him convincingly. Not just go in there and it be an OK fight. I want to say ‘OK, I lost the Bradley fight but now I am back on top’ and be one of the best in the division.

Are there similarities between Judah and Alexander?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: I learned a lot from the Judah fight but this is going to be a different kind of fight because Devon is a much better fighter. He is a better boxer and throws more punches and he will be the best fighter I have ever faced. Martinez has given me tips. It is going to be a tough fight and I am very well prepared.

Did he spar with Brandon Rios?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: I learn from any fighter I go in and spar with. It was a great experience and I did very well against him. We both learned from each other. It was six rounds of intense sparring and it was a great opportunity.

Do you agree with Kevin Cunningham when he stated you are better than Maidana?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: It is due to my training. I train hard. There are a lot of good fighters in this division: Maidana, Kahn, Judah, Alexander. My main thing is I want to be included in the mix and this is my opportunity and I’m happy to be here.

Have you changed training in anticipation of this fight?

DEVON ALEXANDER: We didn’t change much. We added a little strength and conditioning but other than that I just got back to what I do best. We added the stuff I needed to be doing in the Bradley fight, just doing it right instead of going in there and just doing anything.

You are going into another guy’s hometown, Lucas. Does that make you nervous?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: No, I am not worried at all. I train for a knockout. I can’t worry about a decision and I can’t let it get to a decision and that’s what I have been working for.

Did you predict a round?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: I don’t like to predict rounds. That is not my job. If it does go the distance, I have to respect the judges and there won’t be a hometown decision.

Do you hear criticisms regarding the Bradley fight?

DEVON ALEXANDER: People want to criticize everything you do. People criticize Pacquiao, Mayweather or Obama, everyone that is at the top of their game. It’s part of the territory. I didn’t read anything after the fight. I just stayed to myself. I knew there was going to be criticism. I just stayed away from it and blocked it all out. I know what I’m capable of doing in the ring and it only motivated me to get back in the gym and get back on top. So it didn’t affect me at all.

Can you respond to the type of criticism?

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: I wasn’t surprised by it. I lay the blame on Devon and me and that’s where it should be laid. When you don’t go out and do what you’re capable of doing, you are going to get criticized. I accept the criticism, he accepts the criticism and we accept full responsibility for coming up short in a great opportunity that was before us, but I’m telling you we won’t come up short on June 25, and I believe this fight is going to be a lot tougher fight than the Bradley fight.

Did you ever think of taking a lighter fight?

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: If I thought that Devon wasn’t the real deal and exactly who we say he is, then I would think about taking a couple steps back and find a soft touch, but Devon is clearly one of the best fighters in the division, so we don’t need to look for a soft opponent. As far as the Bradley fight, Devon didn’t perform up to his capabilities, and Bradley got the decision, which he deserved, but if you look a the fight, it was a close fight, a back-and-forth fight, and when you see that and say that Devon wasn’t performing up to his capabilities, but it’s a close fight with the No. 1 guy in the division. It was a close fight and my guy is doing nothing he is capable of doing and I know that so there is no reason to take a step back. So that is why we are taking this fight and if Devon performs the way he is capable of performing and we’ll move on from there.

Did you start to slow against Judah?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: That was the game plan. I felt he was an older guy. In the first few rounds we had to work the body and then finish the fight strong and put a lot of pressure on him. The game plan worked perfectly and I won that fight. I thought I won the fight and the judges saw it differently and there is nothing to say about that. I learned a lot in that fight and one thing you can’t take for granted when fighting in another guy’s hometown you have to fight hard and challenge him every single second every single minute of every round.

Why didn’t you fight up to your capabilities against Bradley?

DEVON ALEXANDER: I didn’t do what I needed to do. I listened to the crowd and did what they wanted me to do which is just go out there and fight and that’s not how I do it. We had the perfect game plan throughout camp and we threw it all away in one night and that’s not good.

The Bradley fight is motivation because I know I am way better than Bradley and I let it slip out of my hands. After the fight a guy was telling me that Sugar Ray Leonard lost his first fight against Duran then he came back and knocked him out. That is motivation too. I am self-motivated in any situation but as far as this situation it just got me more motivated.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

DEVON ALEXANDER: I can’t say that I have a biggest inspiration because I look at all positive inspirations. My mom, my dad and my coach, too, inspire me. No one is bigger. I just use it all and take it and use it.

What is your biggest fight to date?

LUCAS MATTHYSSE: It would have to be the Zab Judah fight. It was a very important fight. Now this fight is going to be the biggest and most important fight, so I can demonstrate what I am capable of doing. I train very hard.

How do feel about being the loser in the Bradley fight and coming right back for a big fight when the winner has turned down a much bigger fight and is sitting on the sidelines?

DEVON ALEXANDER: I don’t know who is advising Bradley but coming off a big win and Kahn has a belt I would have definitely taken the fight. I don’t know what Bradley’s problem is and I heard they even upped it to $1.8 [million]. I want to get back to where I am in position to where I am fighting in Vegas. People promise fights and you never know what can happen. You have to take the opportunity as they come and I would have taken it. But everything happens for a reason.

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: You know how we operate. We make fights, we don’t turn down fights. We would have taken that fight but I don’t want to speak for Tim and his team because I’m sure they have a strategy. I can only speak for us, and if we had the opportunity, we would have taken it and hopefully for us if Devon beats Matthysse we get the winner of Kahn-Judah or something like that.

What did you want Devon to become more aware of when you went back to camp?

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: You can’t prepare for Matthysse the way you prepare for Tim Bradley. They are two different fighters, and I think Matthysse is more dangerous. This guy is the biggest puncher in the division. For the most part, we got back in the gym and stayed positive and want to turn the Bradley negative into a positive on June 25. We got back in the gym and worked on the basics, and we’ll come out smelling like a rose.

No Holds Barred: Keisha Morrisey and Bob Carson Critique Strikeforce
and HBO Boxing, and Analyze Shine Fights Cancellation

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman had a late
night discussion with two of our correspondents, Keisha Morrisey
(http://www.bloodlineboxing.blogspot.com) and Bob Carson (http://
carsonscorner.podomatic.com), about the fight festivities from
Saturday night, May 15. Right after these shows concluded, we spoke
about the Strikeforce card from St. Louis shown on Showtime, the HBO
boxing card from New York headlined by the Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi
fight, and the cancellation of the Shine Fights mixed martial arts
card which was supposed to feature former champion boxer Ricardo
Mayorga against mixed martial arts veteran Din Thomas.

Who is chiefly to blame for the cancellation of the Shine Fights card
following an injunction granted to Don King against this card because
of a claim that his company has exclusive rights to promote the fights
of Mayorga? Which card was better between the Strikeforce-Showtime
card and the HBO boxing card? Will Strikeforce heavyweight champion
Alistair Overeem, who stopped Brett Rogers in the first round of their
fight Saturday, ever fight top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko? Should
fighters in mixed martial arts and boxing insist on drug testing based
on the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency? What do we think of
the various athletic commissions, which use different tests if any at
all? Are fighters with steroid-laden bodies effective or even sexy?
What is next for Strikeforce? How impressive was Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
great Roger Gracie, who submitted Kevin Randleman in the second round
of their fight with a rear naked choke, in his Strikeforce and
American debut? Why is the promotion of boxing to the public so awful?

These and other key questions are answered in our discussion, which is
almost like hanging out after the fights and chatting with our trio of
combat sports aficionados.
