Boxing has always made for great drama. There are few moments in sport as exciting as the culmination of a great fight. Victory or defeat is decided by one final round. The crowd rising, the tension building, the fighters tapping sources of pride and energy they didn't know existed. It's the stuff that legends are made of.

The movie industry has been borrowing from that legend for decades. Now there is a place where both worlds collide. The International Boxing Film Festival will provide a venue for the presentation of classic and emerging boxing films, geared to the passionate fans of both art forms.
"We are very excited to launch the inaugural International Boxing Film Festival in New York City," said Festival Director Gary D. Morgan. "We are thankful that the School of Visual Arts has agreed to host the event in their fine theatre. Some of the greatest films in history have been about boxing and we are challenging filmmakers to contribute to that fine tradition." The festival will take place over two days - Nov. 30-Dec. 1 - at the SVA Theatre at333 West 23rd Street in New York City. We are now accepting submissions from all over the world. To read the guidelines for film submission, please visit our web site: www.internationalboxingfilmfestival.com <http://www.internationalboxingfilmfestival.com> . "I am very proud of the stellar advisory board that has been assembled for the festival," said Morgan. "Our group includes World Champions, actors and members of the boxing media. We know that the fans of both film and boxing will appreciate the presence of these unique individuals, who are the heart and soul of the sweet science." The International Boxing Film Festival Advisory Board is made up of: Mark McPherson (Honorary Chairman), Michael Bentt, Mark Breland, Bobby Cassidy Jr., Chris Cassidy, Brian Doogan, John Duddy, Steve Farhood, Juan Laporte, Melvina Lathan, Holt McCallany, Seamus McDonagh, David Schuster, Bruce Silverglade and Vinny Vella. After the news conference, we spoke with our correspondent Keisha Morrisey, who has known Mike Tyson for over 25 years. NY State Senate Unanimously Approves State Athletic Commission. Chairwoman Melvina Lathan for Second, Three Year Term

The New York State Senate today unanimously approved the current chairwoman of the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), Melvina Lathan, for a second three-year term. Tom Santino was also unanimously approved to serve as one of three commissioners on the State Athletic Commission.

"I want to congratulate Melvina and Tom on their appointments," Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez said. "Chairwoman Lathan has served the state with dignity, and I am pleased that the State Senate has confirmed her to continue in her current role. Boxing has a long and storied history in New York, and under Melvina's guidance the Athletic Commission has reinvigorated the sport here, making it as safe as possible and helping better prepare boxers for life after boxing. She has made the Athletic Commission as transparent as it has ever been."

"It has been my honor to serve as chair of the State Athletic Commission," Chairwoman Lathan said. "I am looking forward to continuing my work with Governor Paterson and Secretary of State Cortés-Vázquez, ensuring boxing bouts here are safe and fair. We will never compromise safety in the ring, and I will continue to work with NYSAC-trained doctors and inspectors to ensure their training is as current as possible."

"I want to thank Governor Paterson, Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez and the State Senate for this opportunity. As a former professional boxer, I know how important it is to have an open and transparent Athletic Commission overseeing boxing in New York state," Tom Santino said. "I look forward to working with Chairwoman Lathan and fellow commissioner Judge Edward Torres and continuing their efforts to reinvigorate boxing in our state."

Chairwoman Lathan was appointed by Governor David Paterson on July 25, 2008 – the first woman and the first African American female to hold this title – after holding the position of NYSAC commissioner for the previous year. She has a distinguished career as a professional boxing judge, judging more than 235 fight cards including 82 world title matches in the 10 countries. She became the first African American female licensed as a professional boxing Judge in New York in 1991, and she is also licensed in five other states and by two Native American tribes. Chairwoman Lathan has devised and conducted training seminars for boxing judges for NYSAC, the Washington, D.C., Boxing Commission, the International Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Organization. She is the only female recipient of the Rocky Marciano Officials Award presented by the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing.

Commissioner Santino is a retired NYPD detective, former professional boxer and current coach of the Baruch College baseball team. He lives with his family in Queens, NY.

No Holds Barred: Igor Gracie, Melvina Lathan

No Holds Barred: Igor Gracie, Melvina Lathan

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-06-11T08_40_52-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses on several issues involving the battle for mixed martial arts to become organized like a true sport.

After over a decade of opposing the sport, the New York State Legislature is now in the process of considering legislation to legalize mixed martial arts and place it under the regulation of the New York State Athletic Commission. While a bill to that effect was recently passed in a key Assembly committee, the exploding political crisis in the New York State Senate, which was actually closed down this week due to spiraling in-fighting among the politicians, has jeopardized the passage and enactment of that, and all, legislation.

To get some perspective on what would be required by the New York State Athletic Commission to regulate mixed martial arts, we spoke with its chairperson, Melvina Lathan.

We also outline some of the key ups and down in the checkered history of this commission, as well as explain why the failure of combat sports promoters, then and now, to work together to self-regulate their own events made intervention by the politicians inevitable.

This Friday night, June 12, the Bellator Fighting Championships has its eleventh show in its 12-week series, with this one being held at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. It will be televised in the U.S. the following night, June 13, on the Spanish-language ESPN Deportes network.

The main event features the two finalists in the Bellator eight-man welterweight tournament, Lyman Good and Omar De La Cruz, fighting for the Bellator welterweight title. On the undercard, another member of the legendary Gracie family, Igor Gracie, takes on a fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Vagner Rocha.

We had a chance to speak with Igor Gracie Wednesday afternoon at the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York (http://renzogracie.com), where he is a lead instructor and also trains. We spoke about this upcoming fight as well as his plans to compete regularly in mixed martial arts.

In addition, we offer commentary on some of the positive and negative lessons of the first season of the Bellator Fighting Championships, as well as criticize those in the so-called mixed martial arts "media" who have either downplayed or plain ignored this important organization.

No Holds Barred: Melvina Lathan, Gov. David Paterson, Larry Hazzard, Randy Gordon

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-26T05_51_32-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the appointment of longtime boxing judge Melvina Lathan as head of the New York State Athletic Commission.

We start with a commentary on the significance of this appointment, and what it means for the sports of boxing and mixed martial arts in New York.

At a ceremony held Friday, July 25, at the Police Athletic League in Harlem, New York, officially announcing her appointment, we got comments from Melvina Lathan about her new job, boxing, and MMA. We have the statements both she and New York Governor David Paterson made at this ceremony. We also asked Governor David Paterson about his attitude to MMA coming to New York. And we got the very positive comments of Larry Hazzard, former head of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, and Randy Gordon, former head of the New York State Athletic Commission and now co-host of the show Fight Club on Sirius Satellite Radio, about the appointment of Melvina Lathan, and boxing and MMA.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by criticizing the build-up for this Saturday's important welterweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. In particular, the pay-per-view model, the reliance on nationalism, and the failure to use the Internet properly are singled out. In our interview this week, we speak with the award-winning boxing writer Charles Farrell. In a lengthy and candid discussion, the topics include the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight, the controversy arising from this past Wednesday's rematch between heavyweights James Toney and Hasim Rahman, the major injury suffered by Oscar Diaz in his fight with Delvin Rodriguez this past Wednesday which required emergency brain surgery, and more.
