SecondsOut Radio: Cristian Mijares, Vic Darchinyan, George Kimball on the Four Kings

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman discusses the present and past of boxing, and its present and past champions. This coming Saturday, November 1, there will be a title unificationbout in one of boxing's most exciting and talented weight classes, the super flyweight division (115 pounds). WBA and WBC champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 13 KOs), of Gomez Palacio, Mexico, will face IBF champion Vic Darchinyan (30-1-1, 24 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. This fight will be telecast live on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke with both Cristian Mijares and Vic Darchinyan on a media conference call this past week about what to expect in this fight. No Holds Barred: Has Mixed Martial Arts Become the Dumbest Sport in America?

No Holds Barred: Has Mixed Martial Arts Become the Dumbest Sport in America?

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-10-24T22_55_33-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the devolution of mixed martial arts into becoming one of the dumbest, if not the dumbest, sports in America.

Among the issues raised in this no holds barred commentary are how this sport was once a brilliant laboratory and school where discussion of technique was the order of the day, the imitation of the vulgar fake pro "wrestling" by UFC, the hatred of grappling by EliteXC which eventually led to the self-destruction of that company, the preposterous idea by Affliction of a creating a "reality" show to find an opponent for top heavyweight and pound-for-pound MMA fighter Fedor Emelianenko, the continued reliance on the technologically obsolete pay-per-view television model, and more.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we discuss the masterful performance by Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs) in taking a lopsided unanimous decision this past Saturday night against previously-unbeaten Kelly Pavlik (34-1, 30 KOs) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. We hear postfight comments from the master himself, the 43-year-old Hopkins, about what he did to win this fight. We hear from his trainer, Naazim Richardson, about why Hopkins was able to fight so energetically against Pavlik for 12 rounds. And we also discuss some problems in the way in which boxing is run which have prevented Hopkins from becoming as popular a star as his talent warrants. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

BUTE RETAINS TITLE IN CONTROVERSIAL FINAL ROUND; HEARNS TKO’S CLAVETTE IN 6TH; Catch The Replay Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME 2

MONTREAL, Quebec– It was a controversial finish, yet an unquestionable unanimous decision on Friday’s special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME.

Hometown hero, Lucian Bute of Montreal, dominated the No. 1-ranked challenger Librado Andrade of La Habra, Calif., en route to a unanimous decision victory and third successful defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight world title.

However, it was Bute who appeared to be out on his feet at the end of 12 rounds.

Bute used superior hand speed and excellent footwork to easily handle the rough challenger for most of the fight.

Andrade, who had been clearly battered and beaten through 11-plus rounds, took control only as Bute tired late in the final round. Andrade found a home for a few big punches and had Bute stumbling from pillar to post.

With Bute up against the ropes and seemingly out on his feet, Andrade landed another punishing overhand right that sent Bute down for the first time in his career.

Referee Marlon B. Wright gave what many considered a long count, including a break to instruct Andrade to remain in the neutral corner. When Wright resumed the count, Bute was on his feet, leaning against the ropes. Wright had deemed Bute ready to continue, but since the round had ended, it went to the scorecards.

Judges scored the fight 117-109, 115-110 and 115-111 all in favor of Bute.

“We’ve discussed this before,” said ShoBox analyst Steve Farhood during the telecast. “It is very difficult to win a title on the road. We may have seen an overly dramatic example of that tonight.

“This fight was 30 seconds too long for Bute. He totally collapsed… and basically, the referee cost Andrade the title.”

In the post-fight interview with Farhood, Bute said through a translator, “I think he took advantage of me getting tired. He won the 12th round, and maybe one other round, but I won the fight.

“I am not aware of any controversy but, maybe he was leaving the (neutral) corner. That is not for me to judge.”

“He was completely out,” said Andrade in the ring after the fight. “I didn’t come out of the corner. I don’t know what (Wright) was talking about. It was outrageous.”

Andrade falls to 27-2, 22 KOs. At the post fight press conference, he added, “If he gives me a rematch, we’ll take it. But I didn’t come out to win a decision. I promise you if we have a rematch, I am coming for him.

“It doesn’t matter. I had a job to do and I did it. I knocked him out. But whatever happens, we’ll move forward and whoever I fight next, I am coming to fulfill my dream. Whoever it is, I am coming. I am coming like rain.”

“We said he’d have to walk through fire if he was to win this fight in the last few rounds,” said Nick Charles, ShoBox host and play-by-play announcer. “He did. He came through fire, bullets and smoke. What a gutsy performance from Andrade.

“He leaves the loser, incredibly so, and walks off with tremendous grace.”

A near capacity crowd of 16,000-plus rocked the Bell Centre in favor of Quebec’s favorite fighter. A native of Galat, Romania, Bute has lived in Canada since 2003. He improves his record to 23-0, 18 knockouts.

HEARNS vs. CLAVETTE

In the co-feature, “The Chosen One” Ronald Hearns of Detroit, Mich., continued his climb up the 154-pound rankings with an impressive performance over Paul Clavette of New Brunswick, Canada (TKO 6).

Hearns fought effectively on the outside in the opening rounds. In the fifth, he began inflicting damage with a powerful straight right hand. In the sixth, Hearns sent Clavette down twice before forcing the referee to halt the action at 2:37 of the round.

Hearns entered the ring as the No. 11 ranked World Boxing Council (WBC) contender and No. 13 ranked World Boxing Association (WBA). He improves to 20-0, 15 KOs while Clavette drops to 14-2-1, 2 KOs.

The event was promoted by InterBox. Charles called the action from ringside with Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

HOLT TORRES III

Special Edition of ShoBox: The New Generation

Their first two world championship bouts were unforgettable, action-packed and controversial.

Now, World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion Kendall “Rated R’’ Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) will take on Ricardo “Mochuelo’’ Torres (32-2, 28 KOs) in the final chapter of a thrilling trilogy on Saturday, Dec. 13, live on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME 11 p.m. ET/PT.

STAR BOXING RETURNS TO ATLANTIC CITY NOVEMBER 7TH

On Friday November 7th at the Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing returns for the second time in three months with yet another fantastic double-header. The entire card will be broadcast live on GoFightLive.tv, boxing's newest and most innovative way to view world- wide events.

In the main event of the evening the number five rated heavyweight in the world Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson (20-0-1, 7KO) Asbury Park, NJ, who was last seen September 5th at Bally's when he dismantled former heavyweight champion of the world Bruce Seldon, stopping him in the 5th round, will take on tough Matthew Greer (12-3, 11KO) Parkville, MO, in a ten round heavyweight contest. The co-feature of the night features a fantastic welterweight showdown of New Jersey contenders. Trenton, New Jersey's Terrance "Heat" Cauthen (33-4, 9KO) looks to feed off his latest victory over previously unbeaten Alexis Camacho (16-1, 15KO) and work his way towards another title shot when he takes on Atlantic City's own Shamone "The Truth" Alvarez (19-1, 11KO). In Alaverez's last fight he took on now IBF welterweight king Joshua Clottey, losing a tough twelve round unanimous decision.

"We are back once again and we expect yet another fantastic show on November 7th," stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing. "We have gotten such positive feedback from the shows we did in May and September we just had to do at least one more show before the new year. Kevin recently was moved up to the number five ranked heavyweight in the world and we are working on some very big things for him. We are hoping to get him in an eliminator for the number one spot soon and feel very confident matching him up against any of the heavyweight champions. In the mean time, rather than wait around we want to keep Kevin busy, and we think the fight with Greer is going to be very entertaining as he likes to come straight forward and bang. Kevin has said these are the type of fights he wants to be in, so he can show the boxing world he is just not a one dimensional fighter with a great jab. Don't get me wrong, Kevin's jab is unlike any other's, but as you saw in his last fight with Bruce Seldon, Kevin does have very good power and when he wants to step on the gas and bring the fight to you, he can, and has promised he will once again on November 7th."

A complete list of the undercard will be announced shortly. Tickets are priced at $90and $60 and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 1(800)736-1420 or going online to ticketmaster.com. Tickets are also available by calling Star Boxing at (718) 823- 2000 or by going online to www.starboxing.com.

DEFENDING AND SAVING LIVES WHILE FIGHTING FOR HIS OWN: COP/BOXER PAPPAS DOES IT ALL‏

On Wednesday October 29th at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, middleweight Bryant Pappas (6-0, 6KO) will step into the ring against Christ Morton looking to stay perfect and improve his record to 7-0 with 7 knockouts. In the main event of the evening the WBO #7, IBF #10, WBA #11, and WBC #15 rated Jr. welterweight in the world, "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis (20-2-2, 10KO) takes on Ben Ankrah (19-6-1, 9KO). The entire card will be broadcast live on GoFightLive.tv.

UNDEFEATED SGT. BRYANT PAPPAS

When Pappas is not knocking people out in the boxing ring he works full-time as a Yonkers Housing Police Sgt. Pappas has been working for the Yonkers Police Department for almost ten years now, and recently was involved in the very high-profile arrest Friday October 3rd of 43 year old Eric Hadar. Hadar is the CEO of Allied Partners, one of the New York City's top real estate firms owning 25 properties valued at more than $3 billion.

According to an article in the NY Daily News, while driving to work Pappas noticed Hadar's car swerving in and out of traffic recklessly along the Saw Mill Parkway headed towards Yonkers. "I couldn't believe the way he was driving," stated Pappas. "He was all over the place, passing cars on the shoulder, weaving in and out of lanes, it was amazing that he didn't hit anyone. I called the station and told them to get a few cars ready to pull the guy over once he got into Yonkers. If he wasn't pulled over I honestly believe he would have killed someone."

Upon arriving in Yonkers Hadar's car was stopped. As Sgt. Pappas approached the vehicle, he noticed Hagar trying to stuff brown bags into his glove compartment. Further examination of the brown bags revealed Hagar had on him 100 + grams of cocaine and 703 Oxycontin pills and 352 Xanax pills. Although the quantity of drugs found in Hadar's vehicle "is indicative of an intent to sell", Pappas does not believe the millionaire real estate mogul is a drug dealer. "He told us he was on his way to a party for the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah). Either way, I am just happy no one was injured, and that these drugs were taken off the streets," stated Pappas.

As if Pappas's daily heroic efforts that come with his position as Sgt. aren't enough, he has decided to donate his entire purse on the 29th to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. "It is just another opportunity for me to give back. Sloan Kettering is one of the premier cancer centers in all the world, and I am lucky to be in the position where I can contribute, so I do."

Oh yeah, and his fight on the 29th? "I can't wait," stated an excited Pappas. "Boxing is always something I have had a strong passion for. I don't know what will come of my boxing career, but right now I am just happy that I have been given the opportunity to do something I love. I expect the show on the 29th to be fantastic. You have Vinny Maddalone in the co-feature and "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis in the main event. I am looking forward to fighting on the same card as my fellow Greek Arnaoutis. I hear he brings a lot of Greek fans, and so will I so I expect the atmosphere to be something special. I want to thank Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing for giving me the opportunity to fight, and hope everyone can make it out to the show."

Tickets are available for purchase immediately through all ticketmaster outlets or by going online to ticketmaster.com and www.starboxing.com. Or simply by calling (718) 823-2000 or (212)307-717. Tickets can be purchased for $200, $100, $75, or $40. Roseland Ballroom is located in New York City at 239 W. 52 Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the first bout scheduled for 7:30.

Quillin off “The Grande Event” card; Duddy, Wolak & Teron in action Nov. 21 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC

NEW YORK– Brooklyn’s unbeaten middleweight prospect Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (20-0, 15 KOs) will not be fighting November 21st on “The Grande Event” show, promoted by Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing at the Roseland Ballroom, due to minor discomfort in his right hand.

“With such a strong card -- John Duddy, Pawel Wolak and Jorge Luis Teron -- and Peter fighting January 17 on HBO,” Kushner explained, “together with his management team we’ve made a decision to withdraw ‘Kid Chocolate’ from our November 21st show to insure success for the HBO January 17th show.”

Quillin, rated in the top 10 of four regional boxing organizations, was slated to fight in the 10 round co-feature. “I’m disappointed not to be fighting on this great card but I’ll be there to support everybody,” said Quillin who is scheduled to fight on HBO against James McGirt, Jr. on Jan. 17. “I’m so excited to be fighting on HBO that my management and promoter, Cedric Kushner, decided to take me off ‘The Grande Event’ on November 21st. ‘Kid Chocolate’ will be even sweeter in January fighting on HBO.”

“The Grande Event” is headlined by undefeated middleweight Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs), fighting out Queens (NY) by way of Derry, Northern Ireland, against veteran Sam “The Punching Policeman” Hill (17-9-1, 10 KOs) in the 10-round main event. New York State middleweight and Polish National junior middleweight champion Wolak (22-1, 15 KOs), now living in Brooklyn, meets Christian Lloyd Joseph (12-7-3, 5 KOs) in a 10-round bout.

Bronx lightweight Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), trained by former world and Olympic champion Mark Breland, is the reigning NABO champion rated No. 4 by the WBO. He faces an opponent to be determined another 10-rounder.

Manfredo-Bika headlines Nov. 13 “Tough & Tested”at Dunkin’ Donuts Center; Boxing key part of Providence’s culture

PROVIDENCE– Unlike in many United States cities today, pro boxing remains alive and strong in Providence, which will host “Tough & Tested” on November 13 at the newly renovated Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Two-time world title challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr., runner-up in Season One of The Contender, battles Sakio “The Scorpian” Bika, winner of Season Three of The Contender, in the 12-round main event for the IBO super middleweight title.

“Tough & Tested,” promoted by the Tournament of Contenders in association with Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), will air nationally live on Versus television. The co-promoters have called for a ‘Pink Out’ (everybody wearing something colored pink) to show support for the Gloria Gemma Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from ticket and T-shirt sales will benefit the Gloria Gemma Foundation for research into early breast cancer detection.

Boxing’s rich tradition in Providence started way back in 1890 when George “Old Chocolate” Godfrey knocked out Patsy Cardiff in the 16th round. Over the years, Providence was a hot spot for the “sweet science” at places like the National A.C., Marieville Garden, Infantry Hall, Rhode Island Auditorium Arcadia Ballroom, Elks Auditorium, Metropolitan Opera House, Prince Memorial Stadium, Strand Theater, Rhode Island Convention Center, Twin River and the predecessor to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the Providence Civic Center.

The late, great heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was 28-0 in Providence, where a virtual Who’s Who of Hall of Fame boxers have fought, including “Sugar” Ray Robinson, “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, Sandy Saddler, “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Ted “Kid” Lewis, Ezzard Charles, Mickey Walker, “Barbados” Joe Walcott, Kid Gavilan, Sammy Angott, Ike Williams and many more.

The last major world title fight held at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center (Providence Civic Center at that time) was October 1, 1991, when Vinny Paz stopped Gilbert Dele in the 12th round for the WBA light middleweight championship. Also fighting on that card, ironically, was Peter Manfredo, Sr. – Peter, Jr.’s father and head trainer -- who won an 8-round decision against previously unbeaten Paul Lynch (6-0).

“CES has worked hard to keep the boxing fires burning in Providence for the past few decades,” Providence-based promoter Burchfield said. “The November 13th show continues the great boxing tradition here in Providence.

Manfredo (31-5, 16 KOs), the reigning NABF Interim champion, is the WBC No. 13 rated super middleweight. Fighting in front of his hometown fans, “The Pride of Providence” sports a perfect 16-0 (10 KOs) record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) in the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. All five of Manfredo’s losses as a pro have been to world champions and Peter, Jr. has an opportunity to join an exclusive club of local fighting stars such as world champions Paz, Joey Archibald and Harold Gomes with a win against Bika.

IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight title-holder Bika (26-3-2. 16 KOs), a 2000 Cameroon Olympian now fighting out of Australia, won The Contender III with a dramatic eighth round stoppage of Bridgeport, Connecticut native Jaidon Codrington in the finale in Boston. Bika, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 8 by The Ring magazine, hasn’t been stopped in 31 pro fights.

In the 10-round co-feature, Grady “Bad Boy” Brewer (23-11, 13 KOs), winner of Season Two of The Contender, meets fan favorite in Season Two of The Contender, IBF No. 13 rated Cornelius “K9” Bundrage (28-3, 16 KOs), in an IBO light middleweight title eliminator. Codrington (18-2, 14 KOs), runner-up in Season Three of The Contender, also is fighting on the card in a super middleweight Special Attraction against an opponent to be determined.

Some of New England’s most talented and popular fighters are scheduled to fight on the undercard including WBC World Youth and USNBC featherweight champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard (15-0, 8 KOs), super flyweight Isander “Peachy” Beauchamp (5-0, 2 KOs), Providence light welterweight Jesus Caro (2-0, 2 KOs), and Pawtucket light welterweight Diego Periera (1-0, 1 KO). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $18.00, $23.00, $58.00, $79.00, $107.00 and $222.00, are on sale at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Box Office (401.331.6700) or through CES Boxing at 401.724.2253/2254 or www.cesboxing.com. Tickets will also be on sale through www.Ticketmaster.com, at all local Ticketmaster outlets by calling Ticketmaster direct at 401.331.2211 or 617.931.2000, as well as Manfredo’s Gym in Pawtucket (401.723.1359), 401 Gym in Cranston (401.261.9800), Balletto’s Gym in Providence (401.641.9994), Elite Mixed Martial Arts (401.728.1356) and Ultimate Fitness in Bristol (401.253.3539). Each paid ticket holder will receive a complimentary Dave & Buster’s $10.00 Power Card ($12 value) upon entry.

For more information call 401.724.2253/2254 or go online to www.cesboxing.com, www.tournamentofcontenders.com or www.dunkindonutscenter.com. Doors open at 5:30 PM/ET, first bout 6:30 PM/ET.

BAILEY PRIMED TO BECOME TWO-TIME WORLD CHAMPION; World-Rated & Former WBO 140 lbs. Champion Randall Bailey Dominates Corley – Seeks World Title Shot

New York– Former WBO junior welterweight world champion Randall Bailey is looking as dominant as ever, as seen Wednesday night during DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series at BB King’s Blues Club in New York City. Bailey was in total command in winning a rematch against fellow former WBO world champion DeMarcus Corley - avenging a 2003 points defeat in the process.

Bailey (38-6, 34 KOs) kept the experienced Corley at bay all evening, utilizing his ever-lethal right hand; widely regarded as the most dangerous in the 140 pound division. A Bailey right dropped Corley in round three and the Miami, Florida native went on to cruise to an eight-round unanimous decision victory on scores of 79-72 twice and 78-73.

“Randall Bailey showed last night that he’s ready to challenge again for the junior welterweight world championship. He was willing to take this rematch against DeMarcus Corley on short notice and made it look easy. Randall will fight any champion, anytime, anywhere. If Timothy Bradley’s or Andreas Kotelnik’s people are reading this, let’s make a fight. The same goes for any contender willing to fight us for the vacant IBF belt,” said DBE president Lou DiBella.

A winner in 11 of his last 12 fights, Bailey is currently rated #4 IBF, #6 WBC and #10 WBA. With last night’s victory, the 34-year-old Bailey won for the third time in as many tries in 2008. He captured the WBC Latino junior welterweight title in January – stopping Anthony Mora in five rounds, and this past August 6, “The Knock-Out King” iced Dairo Esalas in 46 seconds.

Since turning professional in 1996, Bailey has enjoyed a stellar career that’s included a spectacular first-round knockout over Carlos “Bolillo” Gonzalez to capture the WBO world crown, followed by two successful title defenses. In February 2002, Bailey knocked out Demetrio Ceballos in three rounds to win the interim WBA world championship.

UNBEATEN TEON KENNEDY BOXES FELIPE ALMANZA ON NOV. 14 AT PHILADELPHIA’S NEW ALHAMBRA

Philadelphia, PA— Undefeated super bantamweight prospect Teon Kennedy, of North Philadelphia, goes for his 11th win as a pro when he takes on Felipe Almanza, of Lorica, Colombia, in a scheduled eight-round contest Friday evening, Nov. 14, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets, next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. First of eight fights at 7.30 p.m.

Topping the eight-fight card is a 10-round contest for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super flyweight title between Raul Martinez, of San Antonio, TX, and Victor Proa, of Monterrey, Mexico. Both men are undefeated: Martinez is 23-0, 13 K0s; Proa is 26-0-2, 19 K0s.

The Martinez-Proa contest, as well as the 10-round welterweight semifinal between Alex Camacho, of Austin, TX, and Edvan Barros, of Bahia, Brazil, will be televised live by Telefutura/Univision as part of a two-hour Solo Boxeo broadcast beginning at 8pm EST.

Kennedy, 22, scored his most impressive win July 18 when he knocked out previously unbeaten Thomas Snow, of Washington, DC, in two rounds at the New Alhambra. He followed that with a six-round decision over Robert DaLuz, of Jacksonville, FL, on Sept. 19 in Hockessin, DE.

Earlier this year, Kennedy earned an eight-round decision over Castulo Gonzalez, of Lynn, MA, at the New Alhambra.

A pro less than two years, Kennedy is 10-0, 5 K0s. As an amateur, he won the 2004 National Golden Gloves championship at 112 pounds.

Almanza, 32, has a 14-14-1 record with seven knockouts. He spent most of his career in Colombia and re-located to the United States in 2008 and now trains with Lenny DeJesus in New York.

“Before I came along Almanza was just taking fights on his own and using anybody he could find to work in his corner,” DeJesus said. “That’s all changed now that he’s with me. You’ll see a different fighter.”

Almanza lost an eight-round decision this year to Eric Morel, of Puerto Rico, who once held a piece of the world flyweight title, and he also lost to former world title challenger Wilfredo Valdez, of Colombia.

Dennis Hasson, of Kensington, takes on Ariel Espinal, of Brooklyn, NY, in a six-round super middleweight contest and lightweight Victor Vasquez, of North Philadelphia, faces Mario Galan, of Hollywood, FL, in a six-round junior welterweight match.

Junior lightweight Anthony Flores, of North Philadelphia, will see action in a six-round fight.

Two four-rounders complete the card.

The show is being promoted by Top Rank, Inc., in association with Peltz Boxing Promotions and Joe Hand Promotions.

Five preliminary fights complete the card.

Cunningham vs. Adamek Newark Press Conference Quotes

NEWARK, N.J.— International Boxing Federation cruiserweight world champion Steve “USS” Cunningham and former world champion Tomasz Adamek foreshadowed their Dec. 11 meeting at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. at a press conference today at the one-year-old venue.

“I work very hard because boxing is my job,” Cunningham, from Philadelphia, said. “My goal is to be the greatest of all time. I know it’s a lofty goal but I want to the best I possibly can be.

“I want Adamek to bring his best on December 11 in Newark. He’s a family man like me but it’s my job to put my hands on him and that’s what I’m going to do.

“I’m a true world champion. I’ve fought in South Africa, Germany and in Poland, twice. I’m more popular in Europe than I am in America right now but that’s about to change. I want to give the world a true cruiserweight world champion that will stay in the division and defend his titles for years to come.”

Adamek, from Poland now living and training in Jersey City, N.J., says he will bring his vaunted right-hand punching power from light heavyweight to the 200-pound limit.

“Steve’s a nice guy but I’m going to beat him, Adamek, the IBF No. 1-ranked cruiserweight, said. “He’s a world champion and I respect him but I will win. Steve’s quick and dynamic. It will be a great fight.

“It made me weak to make 175 pounds against Chad Dawson and I was still able to knock him down. My right hand is bigger at cruiserweight. I’ll be stronger and carry my punch to the 200-pound limit.”

The press conference was co-hosted by event promoters Don King Productions and Main Events. Both Don King and Kathy Duva, as well as New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame President Henry Hascup, spoke of the fact this marks the first time since Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano met in Newark for the third and final time in 1948 that a world-championship boxing match has been staged in the city.

Full Quotes

Steve Cunningham: “I do what I do because I’m born again through Jesus Christ.

“I would like Newark to know they have a great person in IBF President Marian Muhammad. I went to box in Poland and got robbed. She flew over for the immediate rematch to make sure it would be a fair fight. She’s all about the rules and giving fighters a fair shake. The IBF will only be better with the addition of Larry Hazzard.

“I work very hard because boxing is my job. My goal is to be the greatest of all time. I know it’s a lofty goal but I want to the best I possibly can.

Tomasz Adamek: “Steve’s a nice guy but I’m going to beat him. He’s a world champion and I respect him but I will win. Steve’s quick and dynamic. It will be a great fight.

“It made me weak to make 175 pounds against Chad Dawson and I was still able to knock him down. My right hand is bigger at cruiserweight. I’ll be stronger and carry my punch to the 200-pound limit.”

It begins this Friday, October 24, when undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (22-0, 18KOs) defends his title against once-beaten, No. 1 ranked challenger Librado Andrade (27-1, 21KOs) on ShoBox: The New Generation

Taking place at The Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, Andrade will step into hostile territory when he enters Bute’s backyard. Bute, a celebrity in Canada, has a massive following. In his last fight on PPV in the province of Quebec, Bute drew an audience of more than one million viewers, according to InterBox, the promoter for Bute. A crowd of approximately 16,000 is expected to witness the live event.

Eights days later on Saturday, Nov. 1, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING plays host to one of the biggest little fights since Vazquez-Marquez III, when Cristian Mijares, the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight champion faces the International Boxing Federation (IBF) 115-pound champion Vic Darchinyan in a unification bout. O’Connor fighting Nov. 11 in Florida

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate Danny O’Connor, coming off of an impressive pro debut September 17 in Manchester (NH), in which, he stopped Jose Guerrido at 1:55 of the second round, returns to the ring November 11 on the “Bad Boys of Boxing” card at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.

O’Connor (1-0, 1 KO) is matched against Bahamian light welterweight Anthony Woods (5-10, 2 KOs) in a four round bout. “I’m very excited to be fighting at the Hard Rock,” O’Connor said. “I had the opportunity to attend a fight there about a year ago and I was impressed by how it was so well run. I’ll be great to fight in front of Leon (Margules, Executive Director) again and all of the others at Seminole Warriors Boxing (his promoter) like Chico for the first time. I’m pumped.”

The 23-year-old O’Connor, fighting out of Framingham (MA), won this year’s US Future Stars National Championship, in which he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the National Golden Gloves Tournament, both in the 141-pound light welterweight division. Danny’s most notable victory as an amateur was a dominating victory against eventual 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, on May 29 in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

“We’re all excited that this fight is in Florida,” O’Connor’s head trainer and co-manager David Keefe (with Rob Valle) remarked. “It’s going to be a great experience fighting at the Hard Rock, where Danny will hopefully be selling out some day.”

Seminole Warriors Boxing and DiBella Entertainment are co-promoting “Bad Boys of Boxing,” headlined by light heavyweight Glen Johnson and supported by super middleweights James McGirt, Jr. and Edison Miranda in separate bouts.

“I don’t know much about my opponent other than he’s had 15 pro fights,” Danny concluded. “He has a lot of experience. I was pleased with my performance in my pro debut. I fought like a professional, but I was a bit anxious with so many friends and family members there. This fight I want to concentrate on showing my boxing skills. I didn’t really get an opportunity to do that in my first fight because I was looking for a knockout fighting in front of my family and friends. I’m going to concentrate on being a ring technician this fight.”

"ALL OR NOTHING"; JERMAIN TAYLOR TRAINING CAMP NOTES

"I've been doing this so long, it's part of my life and my profession. The nine month layoff was good for me, it allowed me to set some new goals
for myself and to take a good look at where I am in my career and where I want to go. "

MIAMI- The fight that could define his career in the super middleweight division is less than month away, and news from Jermain Taylor's camp in Miami, Florida is very good. It's good, that is, unless you ask Jeff Lacy, Jermain Taylor's opponent for the November 15th fight "All Or Nothing". HBO World Championship Boxing will televise the bout from Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (10:15pm ET / 9:15pm CT / 7:15pm PT).

DiBella Entertainment is presenting the 12-round super middleweight title eliminator in association with Prize Fight Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. Tickets are on sale now at $275, $200, $100, $75, $50 and $25, and available through all Ticketmaster locations at 615-255-9600 or www.ticketmaster.com .

"Training is going very well for me, I'm on schedule with everything. I know Jeff is working just as hard with his preparations, but I feel very confident about November 15th. This is the longest I have been out of the ring since I turned professional and the time off gave me time to put my career in total focus."

Ozell Nelson is serving as Taylor's lead trainer for the second consecutive fight and likes the intensity & focus Jermain has brought to training camp.

"We are on schedule," Nelson said. "Jermain is in tremendous spirits and looks very good. He is enjoying this training camp with a commitment and purpose more than I have ever seen before."

Perhaps the environment is helping, because there is certainly good memories in Miami. Jermain is training in the Sunshine State for the first time since he defended his Undisputed Middleweight Championship on December 2, 2005, with a second straight victory over Bernard Hopkins.

"I have good memories from Miami, " Taylor said. "Miami is like my second home, I have always liked training in Miami. Everything is great here and I'm feeling good about everything as I prepare for
Jeff Lacy on Nov. 15th."

PUNCHING MORE THAN AIR:

Jermain Taylor is steadily moving into more aggressive stages of his training camp, moving away from conditioning and into more sparring work this week.

"We have some great sparring partners here and Jermain is really getting some good work," said Nelson. "We are still getting our running in, getting our legs right, but it's time to start hitting people too."

Taylor is already sparring 10 rounds a day and will move into 12-round sessions next week. One change from previous camps is that Taylor in interacting a lot more with his sparring partners, talking and joking with them, and taking advice from them. For this fight, it's all hands on deck.

"Everything is on the line for me with this fight, this is a total team effort with everyone involved with camp," said Taylor. " My sparring partners are really giving me some good work, It feels good to get there with my sparring partners, they are really pushing me."

STRATEGY SESSIONS:

Ozell Nelson and Jermain Taylor have been watching plenty of videotape from Taylor's two losses to middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, the only two losses of his career. The pair saw Taylor getting
hit with Pavlik's right hand too often, so they've gone to work on better defense in training camp.

"You've got to work on defense," Nelson said. "You don't want your offense to be your defense. We are going to dodge that right hand, stay behind him. Lacy's nickname is "Left Hook," but he has a
sneaky right hand. We're going to stay away from that."

But camp has been about more than defense. Much of the sparring and shadow-boxing work has been focused on getting Taylor to use his left hand more and Ozell expects that it will be Taylor who brings the fight to Lacy.

"I want him to dictate the pace, be more aggressive with his left hand, hooking off the left and jabbing," Nelson said. "We don't want to let Lacy plant his feet and get comfortable. We don't need to knock
Jeff Lacy out. I want him to box Jeff, move and pivot and frustrate him. Relax and dictate the fight."

Taylor has a more simple strategy.

"I just want the win," Taylor said. "I would be happy with a knockout, but what's important is that I dictate the fight and come away with the victory. I'm going to fight my fight."

RESTED AND READY:

Jermain Taylor will be stepping into the ring after nearly nine months away from boxing. Ozell Nelson was concerned how Taylor's transition back to competitive boxing would be after the longest layoff of his professional career, but so far, in training camp there have been no signs of rust.

"I was very concerned about the long layoff," Nelson said. "But Jermain needed the time off. His mental attitude and focus has been great. He wants to get back to winning and being in a position to go for another title."

Taylor said he was ready to get back in the ring before camp even started. Now that he's in the middle of camp, it's like he never left the ring.

"I've been doing this so long, it's part of my life and my profession. The nine months layoff was good for me, it allowed me to set some new goals for myself and to take a good look at where I am in my career and where I want to go. "

DEMETRIUS HOPKINS REFUTES ANY CLAIM THAT HE SIGNED ANY DOCUMENT OR FACILITATED THE REMOVAL OF EARL MORTON FOR REFEREE OF PAVLIK – HOPKINS IN ANY WAY

PHILADELPHIA— Contrary to reports that have surfaced on the internet, undefeated Jr. Welterweight, Demetrius Hopkins did not sign any affidavit that led to the removal of referee Earl Morton from this past week’s showdown between Kelly Pavlik and Demetrius’ uncle, Bernard Hopkins.

Hopkins is adamant that he didin't provide any verbal or written information.

Morton was replaced by Benjy Esteves after Morton was alleged to have a friendship with the elder Hopkins.

“I have no idea where anyone would get that I signed something. Have my uncle and I had disagreements this year? Yes. But I would never do anything like that to interfere in his career. I would have no idea if he was friends with this guy and for a report to come out like that is hurtful to me because I am not that kind of a person.” said Hopkins.

“I am very happy for my uncle on his performance on Saturday and for anyone to make something like that up is just horrible reporting.”

Hopkins manager Cameron Dunkin also backs Hopkins, “He didn’t sign anything at any time.”

If anyone would know, it would be Dunkin because he manages Pavlik as well as Demetrius Hopkins

Hopkins, 28-0-1 with eleven knockouts is ranked #9 by the WBC, #11 by the IBF, and #11 by the WBO will have his next fight announced shortly and is looking forward to challenging for the Jr. Welterweight championship

Manfredo training in comfort zone for IBO world title fight vs. Bika Nov. 13 at Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, live on Versus

“Tough & Tested”

PROVIDENCE– Two-time world title challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr., runner-up in Season One of The Contender, finds himself training at home in a comfort zone as he prepares for his IBO super middleweight title fight November 13 against Sakio “The Scorpian” Bika, winner of Season Three of The Contender, at the newly renovated Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

“Tough & Tested,” co-promoted by the Tournament of Contenders and Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc.

Manfredo (31-5, 16 KOs), the reigning NABF Interim champion, is the WBC No. 13 rated super middleweight. Fighting in front of his hometown fans, “The Pride of Providence” sports a perfect 16-0 (10 KOs) record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) in the same Providence building as his Nov. 13th showdown against Bika. Manfredo’s five pro career losses have all come at the hands of world champions.

“I’m a family man, blue collar guy who goes to the gym (Manfredo’s Gym in nearby Pawtucket) and takes care of business. I’m a fighter, not a reality star, who is going to become world champion November 13th fighting in front of his family and friends in Providence. All of my best fights have been in Rhode Island, especially at The Dunk, and being in a comfort zone is the main reason. I never really loved boxing or training until now. You know I hated going to the gym in California. Freddie Roach is a great trainer, but I missed being home with my family. I made amends with my father and now live in the gym, do my work, and go home everyday to my family. You may not have your fans in the ring with you, but you know that there in the arena. It’s much better sleeping in my own bed, eating food I like, and being with my family and friends. I’m in a comfort zone!

“Bika’s a guy ranked higher than me who has fought two world champions. He may have lost but he’s game. His style is made for me. I wanted him and got him for a world title fight. Bika reminds me of (Joey) Spina, but he’s more disciplined and stronger in the mind than Joey. They’re both big, strong and wide shots. They have similar styles and I’m very confident. I’m not a trash talker, but I took out Spina in 2 1/2 rounds, so, I guess, it’ll take me 4 ½ or 5 rounds to stop Bika.”

“I like this style of match-ups,” explained Peter’s father and head trainer, Peter Manfredo, Sr. “Bika is strong and durable but wide. If you just stand in front of him, he can punch you out. You either stay on the outside controlling the fight with jabs or go inside and use uppercuts. I know that I’m in for a fight. He’s a legitimate fighter, ranked in the top 10 by Ring. He fought two world champions, (Joe) Calzaghe and (Markus) Beyer. Bika almost had Calzaghe out at the end of the 12th round with a hook. He can punch, but I like Peter’s odds because of his speed. It’s going to be exciting; good action with both guys going for it.”
