Matyushenko, Fabiano, Hieron Retain Titles at IFl New Jersey‏

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.– International Fight League titleholders Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko (Belarus), Wagnney Fabiano (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Jay “The Thorobred” Hieron (Freeport, N.Y./Las Vegas) each retained their respective titles at the IFL event at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. in front of 5131 spectators this evening. Matyushenko weathered a strong first round by Jamal “The Suit” Patterson (Jersey City, N.J.), then punished the challenger with a series of right hands before the bout was stopped with 30 seconds left in the second round. Fabiano, known for his world-class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expertise, stunned Shad Lierley (Seattle) with a solid punch just 37 seconds into the first round to record the KO.
Hieron dominated the entire round against Mark Miller (Chicago), finishing the round with a ground-and-pound until the referee stepped in for the TKO. In the camp vs. camp competition between Miletich Fighting Systems and American Top Team, LC Davis (Kansas City, Mo.) of MFS scored a knockout of Rafael Dias (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) with just seconds remaining in the third round of a very competitive featherweight bout. ATT’s welterweight Emyr Bussade (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won a second-round submission via kneebar over Jesse Lennox (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). The light heavyweight bout between Carmelo Marrero (Douglasville, Pa.) and Mike Ciesnolevicz (Williamstown, Pa.) was ruled a no contest when a cut from the head of Marrero from an inadvertent head butt would not stop. Boxing promoter Lou DiBella, President and CEO of DiBella Entertainment and Diane Garnick, an Investment Strategist for Invesco, have been selected as honorees for the 2008 Council for Unity Champions for Children Gala. The gala will take place at 6pm on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at The Lighthouse Chelsea Piers.



The mistress of ceremonies will be Law and Order SVU’s Tamara Tunie, who plays medical examiner Dr. Melinda Warner. Hip-Hop is mourning the passing of another legend today, as news spreads of the passing of pioneer B-Boy Frosty Freeze, who died yesterday (April 3) at the age of 44. The former Rock Steady Crew vice-president, born Wayne Frost, died in Manhattan following a prolonged illness, though details of his medical battle remained unclear. “Frosty, within Hip-Hop, Frosty represents one of the last representations of what original B-Boy style was when the dance first started,” RSC’s leader Crazy Legs told AllHipHop.com. Though funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed, Crazy Legs expects the services to be held as early as Tuesday. Frosty Freeze’s life will be celebrated at the Rock Steady Crew’s 31st Anniversary, set to take place in New York July 24-27. “Those who know me well know that when it’s time to do something, I’m gonna pick the biggest spotlight to shine on Frosty.”

Floyd KO's "Big Show"; "Money" Talks at WrestleMania XXIV,

ORLANDO, Fla. – At WrestleMania XXIV, Floyd Mayweather put his “money” where his mouth was, running his professional record to 40-0 with a shocking knockout of the 7-foot, 441-pound Big Show.


While he may not have come through on his promise to break the mammoth’s jaw, he did, in fact, shock the Citrus Bowl-record crowd of 74,635 WWE fans and millions more watching around the world on pay-per-view by felling Big Show like a giant redwood. The victory, however, didn’t come without a bit of chicanery.



Mayweather’s initial strategy of “you can’t hurt me if you can’t catch me” worked for a while, but just like the proverbial tortoise and the hare, The World’s Largest Athlete won that race in the end. After finally catching The Greatest Fighter in the World, Big Show clobbered his much smaller challenger, seemingly toying with the welterweight champion. The 7-footer brutalized Mayweather with chops, body shots and stomps to the arm. The WBC welterweight champion tried to fight back with a sleeper, but when Big Show dropped him once again, Mayweather’s entourage decided enough was enough.

One of Floyd’s handlers pulled him from the ring, and the group attempted to escape. But like a Velociraptor chasing down guests at Jurassic Park, Big Show hunted down “Money” and dragged him back the ring – manhandling several of Mayweather's corner men in the process.

That wasn’t the last Big Show would see of the entourage, however, as one took advantage of the “Anything Goes” stipulation by introducing a chair into the proceedings. The 7-footer thwarted his efforts thanks to a thunderous chokeslam, but when “Money” tried to capitalize by using the chair himself, Big Show wrapped his massive hands around Mayweather’s 24-inch neck.



Unfortunately, that left his nether regions unprotected. One swift kick to the little “Big Show” stopped The Largest Athlete in the World in his tracks, and that was all the opening “Money” needed. Wielding the chair like a mighty club, Mayweather cracked the Goliath once, twice, three times in the head. With Big Show reeling, the welterweight champion dropped his right glove and snatched a chain with brass knuckles on it from around one of his fallen comrade’s necks. Sliding them on his already lethal right fist, “Money” wound up and slugged Big Show straight in the jaw.

The WWE Superstar dropped like an imploded building, and our fans in the Citrus Bowl sat in hushed silence as referee Scott Armstrong made the count. When it reached 10, the Citrus Bowl erupted in boos as Mayweather celebrated career knockout No. 26.

While it’s bad enough that Big Show failed on his promise to end Mayweather’s career, what could be worse is the backlash he might receive from his own peers. Normally one of the most feared men in the WWE locker room, how will Big Show be received now that he’s lost to a man who is literally half his size?

Floyd Mayweather showed the world at WrestleMania why he is a six-time champion in five different boxing weight classes. In doing so, he proved the old adage that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog – especially when that dog has his whole pound helping him out.

TOTOWA, NJ– First it was WBC Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik. Now it is IBF Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham. One by one the world’s middleweight champions are avoiding undefeated IBF/WBC mandatory middleweight challenger Giovanni Lorenzo.

Only weeks after Pavlik selected Gary Lockett as his next opponent rather than risk his crown against Lorenzo, Sauerland Promotions (Abraham’s promoter) has begun discussions with Warriors Boxing about defending the IBF crown against Edison Miranda in June. Not so fast says Lorenzo.

“The IBF has sent a letter to Abraham’s promoter and to my promoter (Main Events) that negotiations must begin immediately for his mandatory defense against me,” said Lorenzo. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this title opportunity and I’m not going to let politics in boxing screw me out of chance. I thank the IBF very much for supporting me.”

Lorenzo (26-0, 18 KO’s) has stopped his last eight opponents. The 27-year-old Washington Heights, NY resident by way of Jerringa San Cristobal, Dominican Republic has knocked out 15 opponents within the first three rounds. In his last bout on Dec 17, 2007, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Lorenzo blasted Ulises Duarte in one round (KO 1).

WORLD 122-POUND CHAMPION ISRAEL VAZQUEZ VICTORY CELEBRATION LUNCHEON

Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Frank Espinoza’s High-Flying Boxing Club honored one of the greatest, most talented pound-for-pound and exciting fighters in the world, Israel Vazquez, at a victory celebration luncheon Wednesday for his legendary, instant-classic victories over arch rival Rafael Marquez.

Vazquez, who is promoted by Sycuan and managed by Espinoza, successfully defended his world 122-crown by rallying dramatically to outpoint Marquez on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the rubber match of an epic, memorable series.

Vazquez would reign supreme in the exhilarating trilogy, taking two out of three. Each slugfest would top the previous one in energy, excitement and goosebumps, making it one of the most critically acclaimed trilogies of all time.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions will present a similar tribute ceremony for Vazquez next Wednesday night, April 9, at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego.

John 'The Qietman' Ruiz fighting his way back into another title shot; 2-time world heavyweight champion player again

LAS VEGAS– Fresh off of his dominating performance against four-time world title challenger Jameel “Big Time” McCline, two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs) has fought himself back into position for another world title shot.

A rejuvenated Ruiz won a lop-sided 12-round decision on March 8 in a near shutout performance (119-109, 118-110, 117-111) against McCline, who is his previous fight had three times floored Samuel Peter, the new WBC heavyweight champion after stopping Oleg Maskaev on the same card in Cancun. (Judge Julie Lederman, who scored 119-109 in favor of Ruiz, also had McCline losing 112-113 to Peter.)

The new Ruiz is similar to the vintage edition of the Puerto Rican/American who first won the world title in 2001 with a 12-round decision against legendary Evander Holyfield.

“I’m excited and looking forward to my next fight,” Ruiz said. “All of my hard training paid off. (Ruiz weighed-in against McCline at his lightest in five years, 233 lbs.) I’m much more confident fighting this time around. I’m more aggressive than I’ve been in years, throwing more punches and combinations. Everybody’s talking about Sam Peter being the best heavyweight since Lennox Lewis. McCline almost finished off Peter and look what I did to McCline. I’m back at the top of my game and I can beat anybody out there. I’m still in the game; I will be a title holder again and try to unify the titles.

“I’m encouraged by a lot of positive feedback I’ve gotten since the McCline fight. I’m motivated more today than I ever was in the past. I changed my whole crew, especially bringing in Manny Siaca, Sr. as head trainer, which has helped me achieve the position I’m in, back on the right track. I’ve been learning some new things with Manny. I feel like I’m almost starting over again. I’m so excited. Manny has trained 28 world champs and I’m going to be his 29th. What I’ve been through makes me want it more today. Working with Manny has been a great opportunity for me to learn and put it into my game. I’m mentally focused and I’ve been doing everything possible to be my best.”

Ruiz, who has fought in 10 world championship fights, has beaten three world heavyweight champions -- Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – as well as top contenders Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Kirk Johnson and McCline during his 15-year pro career.

Ruiz-McCline was a WBC Qualifier with the winner promised the No. 3 spot in the next ratings. Ruiz is ranked No. 2 in the WBA and cracked the WBO ratings at No. 11.

“My fight against McCline showed I’m ready for anybody in the division,” Ruiz added. “If any of the true world champions want to show what they’re worth, let them prove it by fighting me, somebody who has never ducked an opponent and with more world title fight experience than anybody. I’m ready for any of the title-holders – (Wladimir) Klitschko, Peter, or the (Ruslan) Chagaev-(Nikolay) Valuev winner. I’m back in the gym already getting prepared for my next fight. I’m back!”

CALVIN BROCK TO DELAY RING RETURN UNTIL RETINA HEALS

TOTOWA, NJ – In December 2007 heavyweight contender Calvin Brock underwent surgery to repair retinal damage in his right eye. In response to questions from the media and fans about his return to the ring, Brock has released this statement:



“I have been asked by members of the media and by boxing fans when I will return to the ring,” said Brock. “Recently I underwent surgery to fix damage in the retina of my right eye and I am waiting for the damage to heal. I plan to return to the ring once my eye is 100%. Until then I will rest and do what is necessary to help my eye repair.”

Aussie boxer primed to jump German‏

Inspired by boxing’s ghosts of the past, undefeated Australian world title challenger Jamie “Mr Business” Pittman is primed to cause a boxing boil over and topple German champion Felix Sturm when they face off in Dusseldorf on the 5th April for the WBA World Middleweight Title.

Pittman, a 2004 Athens Olympian with a pro record that now stands at 16 fights for 16 wins with 7 KO’s, has settle comfortably into the German winter despite the sub zero temperatures – the cold European conditions are certainly a change from the sunny Central Coast weather that Pittman has enjoyed of late.

Before leaving Australia, Pittman undertook a pilgrimage of sorts – traveling to Maitland in the NSW Hunter Valley to pay his respects to one of Australia’s greatest sporting icons, the boxing legend Les Darcy.

The 26-year-old Pittman grew up in the Newcastle suburb of Shortland and while his generation has been inspired by the greatness from the likes of Andrew Johns or surfer Mark Richards, for Pittman who has boxed for 16 years, it was the ‘Maitland Wonder’ Les Darcy whose prior world shattering exploits showed him that anything was possible once you laced on a glove and stepped inside a ring.

Tragically Darcy never had the chance to be proclaimed the legitimate “World Middleweight Champion”, dying in 1917, at just 22 years of age.

His passing effected Maitland to such an extent that there has been a bronzed statue of Darcy in his fighting stance erected in the town centre, as well as one of the main roads named in Darcy’s honour. Other ‘sacred’ areas such as where he worked as a blacksmith or the home that Darcy bought for his mother, earned by his ever growing boxing success. All these places are easily found with the map supplied by the local tourist information centre and it was from there that Pittman undertook his pilgrimage to the significant places in Darcy’s all too short life. All in the knowing that he is about to do something his idol never had the opportunity to do.

It’s a well told story that Darcy, entrapped by the wartime politics of the day, fled to America to get his rightfully earned shot at the world middleweight boxing crown – tragically Darcy never got the chance, nor did fellow Newcastle middleweight Dave Sands who died in 1952 in a truck accident while in the prime of his fighting career aged just 26.

To show the class of boxer that Sands was, two international fighters that he defeated quite comfortably later went on to win world titles. For Sands, like Darcy, the opportunity to fight for the world title before they died, sadly never eventuated.

Pittman knows both boxers stories probably better than most and he is determined to make the most of his shot at the world middleweight title – he’s well aware that being the best doesn’t automatically give you a shot at the title and as a young Newcastle-bred middleweight boxer he feels privileged to be fighting in honour of his boxing forebears.

Now based in Gosford, Pittman transcends the “Newcastle vs. Central Coast” friendly rivalry and is a popular sporting figure in both regions. While Pittman is a well known identity in both cities, his profile is not as large in the ‘big smoke’ of major cities such as Sydney – however, come the 5th of April, when he dethrones the German Felix Sturm, the world will know about Jamie “Mr Business” Pittman.

Jaffa Ballogou Set For A Comeback!
