On Saturday, June 7, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will present a world championship doubleheader as Vernon Forrest defends his WBC super welterweight title against Sergio Mora, while Carlos Quintana looks to defend his newly acquired WBO welterweight belt against the boxer he dethroned, previously unbeaten Paul Williams live at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and Fight Nite, LLC, in association with Tournament of Contenders, LLC, DiBella Entertainment and Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with Northeast Promotions. It will emanate from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
Question: Lou DiBella, Dan Goossen, Paul, Vernon, Jeff Wald, and Sergio, can you provide us with some opening comments?
DiBella: I am pleased to have my champion, Carlos Quintana, defend his title for the first time, giving a rematch to the ex‑champion who the granted him the opportunity. It was a terrific fight the first time. I think people saw the terrific ability of Quintana and the strategy and toughness of Quintana and, frankly, the best of Quintana when he beat Williams.
But, Williams has big wins over Antonio Margarito and was a terrific champion in his own right. He is one of the tallest and has one of the biggest reaches I've ever seen in the welterweight division, and is a very dangerous guy.
I expect it to be a terrific fight. Vernon Forrest has been one of the best fighters of his generation. He is really a Hall of Famer. He is a first ballot Hall of Famer when he continues to challenge at 154 pounds and look for a major fight at 154 pounds at this stage of his career. He's got Sergio Mora, who won the first year of "The Contender" in front of him. That figures to be a terrific fight.
SHOWTIME has a tremendous show on June 7. It's something they can be really proud of. But, I think they have the best show on June 7th, and I expect really nice viewership and really good attendance in Connecticut.
Goossen: I thought you were going to say all of the problems were because of me, but you didn't. So, I know there are some reporters out there who are laughing right now.
February 9 was a stunner. It just shows me how crazy this business is. No one gave Quintana a shot and he pulled out a major upset. I am chomping at the bit to get out there next week. I'm anxious to do everything we can to get this thing turned around.
I want to thank SHOWTIME. It's good to be with Vernon Forrest. We go back many years. Lou, you're right, he's a classy man.
Williams: I'm happy to be on SHOWTIME. It will be cool to get my title back. I'm just going to go out there, do my job again and get my belt back.
Forrest: It's a pleasure to be fighting on SHOWTIME again and also in Connecticut again. It's always a pleasure to work with Lou DiBella and Goossen Tutor. But, I have my company with Fight Night. So, finally I get an opportunity to hook up with those guys, and it's a pleasure to be associated with them and continue to do business with them.
We did business in the past. We'll definitely do business in the future. We look forward to a big night of boxing next Saturday.
Wald: I agree with Lou. You've got Dan Goossen, Lou DiBella and Gary Shaw. I'll throw another name in there, Lou, am I right? And you have the first promotion by Vernon's promotion company. You've got Goossen Tutor, Lou DiBella, and you've got "The Contender" and Gary Shaw and we're all still talking to each other.
DiBella: Not for much longer if you keep blabbing.
Wald: You'll see a great fight between Mora and Forrest. Forrest has been a great champion. I've watched him fight many, many times. I saw his last fight. He was terrific. I can tell you that Mora has had a phenomenal training camp. He's in the best shape of his life.
Mora is motivated. He knows what's ahead of him. He has a tremendous amount of respect for Forrest, and he's in it to win it. You are going to see a good fight. What you've seen with a lot of our guys is they go toe-to-toe and don’t run.
Mora is far from a runner, and all of his fights have been really exciting. He' is undefeated and wants to stay that way. It's going to be a great night of boxing. I am also looking forward to seeing Williams and Quintana. That is going to be an exciting rematch. Everybody expected Williams to win the first one, and there was an upset there with Quintana. You are going to see a great, great evening of boxing.
DiBella: Northeast Promotions is my partner of Carlos Quintana, I want to acknowledge them.
Mora: Good afternoon, everybody. I've been listening in. I want to add that, since we're on the subject, why don't I throw in my promotional company while I'm at it. Mora Promotions is starting today. I'm glad to be working with so many talented people. That's what boxing needs, instead of being at war with each other and trying to compete. So that's bulls**t. I'm glad. I'm happy.
The fighters are going to get the best out of me, get the best out of Forrest, obviously. He is a respectable champion. Quintana and Williams have a lot to prove. It's a great card, and SHOWTIME has been proving it, especially this year. So, I'm excited.
Question: Paul, do you consider yourself the champion and that Quintana has to prove himself to you?
Williams: I'm proving I'm the upset because by right he's the champion. So, I have to go back and take that back from him.
Question: Why didn't you return to Puerto Rico to train for this fight as in the past?
Williams: We just didn't.
Question: Why is that?
Williams: I don't know why we didn't go back to Puerto Rico. That's up to my manager. He figured out where we're going to train. I just do what he says.
Question: What are you going to do differently? Did you learn by your mistakes in the past?
Williams: I ended up doing all that in the ring. I'll just do it in the ring on fight night.
Question: Sergio, what are some of your thoughts that you're about 10 days away from the biggest fight of your life? Are you nervous? Have you had dreams about this?
Mora: This is definitely a moment I've dreamed about my entire career. I have aspired to be a world champion. Out of all the belts, the WBC is the most prestigious and actually the nicest looking belt, too. So, it's a great moment of my life. I'm not nervous because whenever you're prepared for something mentally and physically you just look for an opportunity to just come already. I'm eager for it. I know it's going to be a tough fight. Forrest is a hell of a fighter. He is a great champion. He is an Olympian. He does everything right. It is going to be a tough fight.
Question: Do you think having a long body gives you a little bit better chance to defeat Forrest than maybe some of the other guys he's fought who are shorter than him?
Mora: I can think what I want. But, basically it's going to come down to whether I can do it or not. I'm a lot bigger than Shane Mosley. We should be similar in height and length. If Forrest happens to be a little longer, I'll have to adapt to that.
If I'm a little longer, great. But, I think the fight is basically going to come down to who can adapt to each other's style. It is basically a fight of attrition as well. So, that's exciting for me, the fans and for Forrest, I'm sure.
So, I've fought tall fighters before, guys that are six-foot-three, six-foot-one. I like fighting tall guys. I prefer fighting short guys because I have the advantage. It makes no difference if it is a tall fighters or a short fighter.
Question: Jeff, do you look at this fight as a chance for a contender like Mora to score that upset victory? In your eyes, is that a feasible thing to happen?
Wald: Yes, there's no doubt about it. While these guys fight under ‘The Contender’ banner, they fight for themselves and their families. Mora had a career before he came to us. He was brought to us by Fernando Vargas. All these fighters on the phone have promoters.
We're just facilitating what it is they do. We had an upset when Gomez beat Gotti. Everybody forgets Gotti was a huge favorite in that. They already booked the next fight. We had an upset when Brian Vera beat Andy Lee.
Forrest: I'm no Gotti or Andy Lee. You have to realize who you're dealing with. I'm on a completely other level than that them. Don't compare me.
Wald: Talking about upsets.
Forrest: There won't be an upset next Saturday. Trust me on that. You can forget about that s**t.
Quintana: I'm very happy about this opportunity that SHOWTIME has provided me to fight again. I'm expecting another great fight. I can't say what type of win it will be, but I'm expecting another triumph.
Question: Vernon, can you tell us why, with half the promoters in America, apparently, involved in this fight, why you also have decided to create your own promotional company at this point?
Forrest: Actually, I've been my own promoter since I left Main Events back in 1998. But I never signed any fighters. So, finally I decided to open it up and start signing fighters and give other guys opportunities to fulfill their dreams of winning a world championship.
There are a lot of unscrupulous people in this business. When guys honor their word, honor the business, than people like to work with them.
So, I felt it's time that I was the only team I played on. Now, it's time to open it up to other guys to give them opportunity.
Question: How is it preparing for this fight? How is it doing the promotional work and preparing for a major title fight at the same time?
Forrest: I've been training for this fight for three months. I've been in camp since February. So, trust me, I'm not taking Mora lightly at all. I'm really, really focused on this guy. I'm looking at him exactly the same way I looked at all the other fights that I've had.
I only had one guy that I fought that I didn't take seriously, and I got an "L" on my record for that. From that point on I learned my lesson. So, I'm definitely taking him very, very seriously.
Question: Sergio, how are you going to approach this fight?
Mora: It's definitely a big step up for me, but I think it's time for me to take that step. If you look at my last 10 opponents, they have 80 to 90 percent winning records.
I may not deserve this title shot, say maybe the rankings per se, but as far as me being a formidable fighter, and I've proven myself against different opposition that would prove that I actually do have a chance against Forrest. I respect him as a champion and as a hell of a fighter. He's human, obviously. He makes mistakes just like everyone else. I'm just going to try to do my job and try to capitalize on those mistakes. He is going to try to do the same. Whoever has the most success is going to win the fight.
Question: Do you see any specific weaknesses that Forrest has exhibited in his last couple of fights since he's been fighting regularly again?
Mora: We all have weaknesses, whether we choose to exploit them verbally or during the fight, if I would choose. I know I'm going to choose to do it on June 7.
Question: Vernon, is your shoulder or arm giving you any issues during your past few fights or during training?
Forrest: Before I go to camp, I have short camps. You have to get your body in shape to get in shape. Then, you have to get into boxing shape, sparring shape and fight shape.
So, it was more or less a rush job. This time, from since I came back from my injury, what I've been doing when I go to camp is to make sure I'm physically in shape. Then, I'm in boxing shape, sparring shape, fight shape.
When I take my time, condition my body and my mind right, then I don't have any problems. When I have a great camp, I have a great performance. I had a great camp this time so you'll see a great performance.
Question: What did you do during your two years off from boxing?
Forrest: I was still training. Here is the misconception. People thought I was sitting watching football or eating potato chips. No, I was training. I just couldn't fight.
I had to pull out of a couple of fights during that time because my body just wouldn't allow me to fight. I was still training. I never took two years off. I just couldn't fight for two years because my body wouldn't allow me to get in there and compete at a level that I wanted to. So, I had to pull out of a couple of fights.
Question: Carlos, can you talk about your fight with Williams? What kind of adjustments did you make?
Quintana: In the last fight, I had good defense, and I am going to keep that up in this fight. I'm going to come and see what else, whatever new tactics he brings and I'll be able to adjust to them.
Question: Paul, how difficult was it for you to make 147 pounds, and was there a possibility that you were going to move up? How much thought did you give to that?
Williams: I gave a little thought to it, but not that much. But the weight's no problem. It is not tough for me to make it.
Question: Did the weight sap your energy at all?
Williams: I just didn't get in my rhythm last time.
Question: Dan, did you have discussions with Williams on the weight? What are your thoughts on his weight?
Goossen: We discussed it with George (Peterson) and with Al Hayman, and the bottom line was that it was going to be left up entirely to Williams and to Peterson because they're the ones that have to deal with it every day.
We certainly gave them every opportunity to say it was a problem, and that we should move up. But they insisted it wasn't the weight. Based upon that, you move forward.
It was a Williams that none of us had seen before, expected to see that night. Come next week, he has to go out there and show that that's exactly why he lost. His actions next Saturday will dictate where everything is if the weight was good, bad, or if it was a rhythm problem, or just a Quintana problem.
Question: Can you state your case now for any of the viewers out there why people, if they don't have a TiVo, should watch your June 7 broadcast and not a fight on another network?
Forrest: People should watch because it is the best fight of the night. You have me, a world champion. You've have Mora. By winning ‘The Contender’, he has millions of fans that follow him, have been following his career. You have a Quintana-Williams rematch.
Any time a guy beats you, the first thing you want to do is get that win back. So, you're talking about a major upset in boxing. Williams wants to get his revenge and Quintana said it was his win. You've have four of the best fighters in the world fighting that night.
Question: Paul, have you been able to figure out why you couldn't get into a rhythm during the first Quintana fight? Do you think you took him lightly or maybe over trained?
Williams: That's the thing about it. I just couldn't get my rhythm.
Forrest: Paul, sometimes you have a bad night. Sometimes Mickey Mantle had a bad night. Sometimes guys just have a bad night. That's just the way it goes.
Question: Paul, was there any point during that Quintana fight where you were thinking to yourself: I'm having a bad night here, I have to do something, or did it just happen?
Williams: I thought about it in the first round. I couldn't get in my rhythm. He knows it too. You have to work through it.
Question: When you say you couldn't get in your rhythm, what did it prevent you from doing?
Williams: It prevented me from doing everything, how I normally fight. I just couldn't get in rhythm.
Question: You couldn't fight the way you did against Antonio Margarito and everyone else?
Williams: Yeah, I wasn't in my rhythm. This time, I just don't know what it was. I couldn't do it like I could before.
Question: Paul, why is there so much secrecy about where you have trained for this fight?
Williams: Ask my manager, Mr. Peterson. You have to talk to him about why we didn't go to Puerto Rico. He said this is where we're going to train. I follow suit.
DiBella: You go back to basics. You go back to the dingy gyms and that privacy to get that head together. That is exactly why Peterson and Williams aren't in Puerto Rico right now. This is serious business.
Question: Paul, could you tell us how you adjusted your training, or is there anything you've done differently to prepare for this fight so that doesn't happen again?
Williams: You'll see it on the 7th. When I get into the ring, you'll see the difference.
Question: Lou, can you tell us what could be different in this fight?
DiBella: Whenever you have a good fighter like Williams, he's going to make some adjustments and will be a better fighter. You're also going to have a very confident champion in Quintana who beat Williams the first time, who feels like he knows him even better and he's going to be able to be a better fighter. I expect it to be a sensational fight.
I'm interested as a fan, honestly, whether the weight is going to be an issue for the former champion, because it was certainly an issue last time. I want to see if Williams feels comfortable at 147 pounds still. If he is comfortable at 147, it's going to be a great, great fight. I can't wait for it. If he's not comfortable at 147, he'll have a real problem.
Question: Paul, have you had a chance to look at the tape of that first Quintana fight? If so, did you pick out specific weaknesses that you can take advantage of this time that you weren't able to do in the first fight?
Williams: Yeah, I saw a lot of weakness, but I'm not going to share them with nobody.
Question: Do you want to make a prediction for the fight?
Williams: I'm getting my belt back, that's one.
Question: Lou, do you feel the same result is going to happen in this fight?
DiBella: First of all, I'm not Williams, his trainer, manager or promoter, so what I think doesn't matter for s**t when it comes to Williams. That's the truth.
Whenever I see a guy who is as tall as Williams and has as much reach as Williams, he's struggling to make weight. It is an issue. I was really surprised with a champion of Quintana's quality that Williams would want the rematch. But, I promoted Jermain Taylor, and he was having a problem making weight. He could have taken an easier route and used weight as a reason not to take the rematch. He insisted on fighting Kelly Pavlik. It doesn't shock me that the champion wants to get right back to the guy that beat him. I think the result is going to be the same.
Question: Do you think Quintana will pose the same types of problems for Williams?
DiBella: People discount Quintana’s credentials because of one loss to Miguel Cotto. A lot of terrific fighters have been knocked out by him. That night doesn't reflect his career. He's a very tough guy, a very cagey guy, skilled boxer and he's rough. As Williams saw from the first fight, Quintana is a guy that will fight you in the ring, but is also a boxer.
Quintana is a tough fight for anybody. Williams is going to discover again that it's a tough fight. But, I know Williams is not underestimating him, and is ready for a tough fight. I just think that Quintana might have his number and I expect the same kind of fight.
Goossen: Today, Quintana fighting Cotto would be a completely different fight. He's learned a lot from that loss just like any good champion does. I have to disagree with you on one thing. We'll see the real Williams on June 7, which is going to translate into a victory.
Question: Paul, are you prepared for the kind of pace that Quintana is obviously going to set that worked the first time?
Williams: Whatever. I'm going to prepare for whatever I have to prepare for, sir.
Question: Vernon, can you talk about your desire not to be compared to other fighters?
Forrest: Gotti and Andy Lee are overrated. So, when you try to compare, you put me right in the middle of those two guys. I'm nowhere on that level.
So, when you're talking about fighting a guy with my skill level, it is a whole different ball game.
Wald: Vernon, we weren't comparing you on that level. What I was saying is it is real easy to say the guy is going over the hill. Mora is not that little. He won ‘The Contender,’ and he beat those guys.
Forrest: Let me throw something out.
Wald: Let me finish.
Forrest: The only real fighter you had on ‘The Contender’ show was the little guy, Stevie Forbes. That's the only real guy you had on your show. He damn near won the show. So, I am going to call that little boys club ‘The Pretenders,’ not ‘The Contenders.’ Now, I'm going to beat the dog s**t out of your main pretender on June 7. I want you to know that.
So, don't compare me with no Gotti or no Andy Lee. Don't even put my name in the same breath with them.
Question: Sergio, do you think you will be the first fighter from ‘The Contender’ who can actually step out of that pretender role?
Mora: Gomez and Manfredo took the fight for the wrong reasons. One took it for the money and the other for celebrity status to say he fought on that caliber.
I could have both by accepting the Jermain Taylor fight earlier this year. I could have had a nice payday and a big fight for me. I thought I wasn't going to win in Memphis, so I didn't take that fight. I feel that this is my time now. I'm ready and prepared, and I'm hitting my peak, my physique, the way I'm taking camp and life. I'm ready. I'm 27. I'm ready and in my prime.
I have nothing but respect for Forrest. I can see by what he's saying he has no respect for me, which is cool. That's fine. But, when it comes down to it, I can say all I want. I still have to do what I'm going to do. Whether I'm real or not, a contender or pretender, I have to prove something on June 7. Don’t make a mistake of comparing me to ‑‑
Forrest: I just want you to come and fight. Come and fight and I promise you they're going to take you out on a stretcher. I guarantee it. If you do all that running shit you normally do, then it will be a boring fight. I will win by unanimous decision.
Mora: My man, listen, there's no way I'm going to make it a boring fight. I don't come to run, I come to fight.
Forrest: Come to fight and they'll take you out on a stretcher. If you come to fight and step up like a proud Mexican warrior, I'm knocking your mother $$!!## out.
Mora: I don't wish anyone stretchers.
Wald: Vernon, you don't know me, but you fought in Indianapolis at the Indianapolis Center there. I went out of my way to work behind the scenes on that fight and told everyone to invite the people that you handle down in Atlanta from that home that you support. I've been a big fan of yours as a human being for what you've given down there with your fianc?.
Forrest: We're not talking stories. Right now we're talking business. We're talking business. I didn't ask you ‑‑
Wald: You've been very disrespectful.
Forrest: I don't know you either. Right now we're talking about a fight. This is not a buddy system. We ain't friends, so make your point, but don't bring all the other stuff in there. If you've got a point, make it relevant to what we do.
Wald: My point is this is a sport and a business, and there's no reason for you to act like that. So I'm surprised. This is the first press conference we've had with any of the fights we've had where the other side has acted like that. That's all. You can be a little respectful.
Forrest: You ain't fighting. You need to get off the line. I got to fight Mora. You ain't doing nothing but sitting back and watching. Get off the line and let me talk to your fighter.
The middleman has something to say. You sit back and shut up and enjoy the conversation.
Question: Vernon, how would you describe Mora's style, and have you fought anybody with that similar style?
Forrest: I describe Mora’s style as garbage. We sparred before in Los Angeles. He was the first guy that got in the ring after my surgery. I beat him up with one arm. I was lighting him up.
As a matter of fact, I was laughing. Ask his trainer. He was sparring and I was laughing. His trainer asked me: ‘Why are you laughing?’ I can't believe they're getting ready to pay Mora a million dollars to fight. I had to beat King Kong to make that kind of money.
Mora: I don't remember you laughing about it.
Forrest: Ask your trainer. You'll see. He was there.
Question: Sergio, after hearing the disdain Forrest has for you, does that fire you up, is this fight personal now, and are you more motivated than ever?
Mora: No, man that doesn't motivate me. What motivates me is other stuff. Man, I'm getting entertained by this. Listen, I can see what I will do and what I won't do, vice versa. The bottom line is he's the champion. He's proven himself. I'm a guy who is fighting for the championship and I need to prove myself. That's the basic story line. That's it.
I expected to be the underdog, obviously. As far as his insults go, I can't do anything about that. That's what Forrest says. I'm not a pretender. I know that. I know I'm a damn good fighter. I have enough pride not to not embarrass myself or embarrass my promotional company. Bottom line is I'm coming to fight and that's it. I'm ready for this.
Question: Vernon, it seems like you have more fire for this fight than you've had in a long time. What has changed for this fight?
Forrest: I'm setting my legacy. Every fight is personal to me right now. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Those days are over. Nice guys always finish last.
So people are saying, well, you know, you've changed since you've had the surgery. I haven't changed. In order for me to go where I want to go and make it, there are certain things I have to do that some other people might not agree with. But so be it. This is my career and these are the things I choose to do. It's what it is.
Question: George, why the big change in Williams’ training?
Peterson: It's not that the camp was secretive. We just focus on June 7
We're right here in Washington, D.C. If you can remember, Washington, D.C., had world champions several years ago. This is a boxing Mecca here. I'm from here and we're training here. We started here.
Question: Was it a misconception of you training in Puerto Rico this time?
Peterson: It was so convenient, it's our backyard. We decided to go back to where we came from.
Question: Was it evident early on in the first Quintana fight that Williams wasn't himself?
Peterson: It happens. I'm relocated to the Augusta, Georgia, area. I've seen Tiger Woods down there. I know you've noticed it a number of times. It's not every time that he is on point.
It was just a night when Williams wasn't on point. There are times when you see Michael Jordan and any athlete have an off day. I can't understand why they continue to dwell on this Williams having a bad night.
Question: Do you have any closing comments?
Peterson: We'll be present that night and Williams will put out one of the best performances like he's done so many times before.
Mora: I'm glad to be fighting on SHOWTIME. I'm ready to get some press. I hope everybody attends. I want to thank SHOWTIME, and the promoters, whether I fought on your card before or not. I want to take home a title. I’m looking to be the best possible fighter I can be and prove a lot of people wrong. That's it. God bless.
Forrest: June 7 is going to be a great night of boxing I look forward to putting on a great performance. My last performance was pretty good, but I think this one is going to be spectacular. I'm looking forward to continuing to put on great shows in the future with SHOWTIME and Fight Night Promotions.
DiBella: You're going to have a good night of entertainment. I expect my champion, Carlos Quintana, to defend his title successfully.
Goossen: I understand the juices are flowing through Forrest as a fighter and as a promoter now. You did a great job on this call. Bottom line, I'm anxious to see Williams get out there on June 7. There have been a lot of great champions throughout our history starting with Sugar Ray Leonard that had their first loss in a championship title defense, and have come back and reclaimed their titles. There have been some that have tried to get that title back and were unsuccessful against the man that took it.
I believe Williams is going to be successful. George Peterson did the right thing on getting him out to the roots where I believe that we're going to see the difference on June 7.
Wald: I'm interested to see what happens in the ring. First of all, as a fan, it's going to be a great night of boxing. I know what Mora is capable of and what he can do. I've enjoyed watching Forrest, contrary to whatever you heard here, and I can't wait to see Quintana and Williams again. I think that will be a great fight.

Hunky Dorys Fight Night - Magnificent Seven set for Summer Sizzler at the Stadium
The Best of the Fighting Irish are set to showcase their talents at Dublin’s National Stadium on July 12th on the next Hunky Dorys Fight Night. The Magnificent Seven of Bernard Dunne, Matthew Macklin, Andrew Murray, Oisin Fagan, Darren Corbett, Ian Tims and Keith Cresham will see action on what should prove a hot summers night of boxing at the National Stadium.
Dunne will headline the card in an International 10 round contest as he looks to take another step towards a world title shot. The Dubliner rebounded from last years European title defeat in Castlebar last month shedding the ring rust with a comprehensive win over former World Champion, Felix Machado.
The second 10 rounder on the card will see Matthew Macklin square off with Philadelphia danger man Willie “The Gladiator” Gibbs.
Following a career best display in comfortably outpointing former World Champion Yori Boy Campas in March Gibbs promises to be another step up in class for the Birmingham based Irishman.
Fight fans will also get an opportunity to compare the relative merits of Irish rivals Andrew Murray and Oisin Fagan on July 12th ahead of a possible Irish title showdown later this year.
Murray the reigning Irish Light Welterweight champ will look to extend his unbeaten record to 13 straight wins in a scheduled 10 rounder while Fagan, the previous incumbent of the Irish 10 stone title will also appear on the card as he builds towards regaining a belt that he never lost in the ring.
Add the return of big punching Belfast star Darren Corbett to the mix and appearances from unbeaten prospects Ian Tims and Keith Cresham and it all adds up to a mouth watering night of boxing for Irish fight fans.
Promoter Brian Peters believes it could be huge night in the careers of both Dunne and Macklin. “For Bernard there’s a possibility that we could bypass the European title and go for a World title. Rendall Munroe is the European Champion now and I’ve spoken to his promoter Frank Maloney and they’re not keen on coming to Ireland to fight Bernard.
“So with that being the case we need to look at other options and the most obvious one is to go for the world title. There’s no point hanging around at European level waiting for a fight that may not happen anyway.
“Bernard had a good win in Castlebar last month against a very decent opponent in Felix Machado and I’m sure if he can get another couple of wins likes that we’ll be knocking on the door of a world title shot. We can’t afford any slip ups but Bernard still needs to beat the kind of guys that can secure him a world ranking so this is a crucial period in his career.
“Matthew also has a big night ahead of him. He stepped up a level last time and did very well against Campas and Gibbs is definitely another step up again. He’s a big puncher and a really dangerous opponent but if Matthew gets past him it will create a few ripples Stateside because Gibbs is very much a known quantity over there.”
For Gibbs fighting certainly seems to be in the blood, the 32 year old is a cousin of Bernard Hopkins and like his cousin he has developed a ring persona. Hopkins calls himself the “Executioner” while Gibbs goes by the name of “The Gladiator” and enters the ring wearing a Gladiator’s mask. He’s backed up that particular moniker by compiling a professional record of 20 wins and 3 losses. Sixteen of those wins have come by stoppage so he can clearly punch but Macklin isn’t worried about his reputation.“I actually fought on his undercard in Philadelphia a few years back and after my fight I managed to see a few rounds of his fight. He’s a big strong guy but I didn’t see anything to frighten me.”
Despite his impressive win over Campas Macklin admits there were elements of his performance that he wasn’t happy with. “I suppose I’m my own worst critic but watching it back again afterwards I was probably too disciplined. I had said I wanted to get back to using my jab and my boxing skills but looking back at it now I think I overdid it against Campas. I probably over compensated for that and there were times when I probably should have stood my ground a little more.
“That’s something I can work on when I go back to Florida to work with Buddy McGirt again. I just need to strike a happy medium because while I want to get back to my boxing skills I don’t want to lose the intensity because I believe that’s one of the things that gives me an edge over the other guys out there.”
Tickets for the Hunky Dorys Fight Night priced from €50 go on sale from 9am tomorrow (Thursday, May 8th) from Ticketmaster.ie and all usual outlets.

Diaz Diary: Weekend by the bay
Below is a link to the most recent Chicago Sun-Times blog entry from World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz detailing his quick trip to the San Francisco area this past weekend for a public workout.
Diaz is currently training in Chicago for his June 28th title defense at LETHAL COMBINATION against The Mexicutioner, Manny Pacquiao at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., promoted by Top Rank Incorporated and MP Promotions.
Diaz is providing regular updates on his training and preparation for the fight to the Chicago Sun-Times.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/boxing/982895,diaz060208.article
Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs.Diaz, priced at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100, can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall, and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000 or Mandalay Bay (702) 632-7580. Tickets are also available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
Dubbed "Republica Enemy No. 1," Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003 including Erik Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Marco Antonio Barrera (TKO 11, W 12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W 12, D 12), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), Hector Velazquez (TKO 6) and Jorge Solis (KO 8). Pacquiao was named 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Morales, as well as his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Larios. The hard-hitting southpaw has won 22 of his last 23 bouts including 2007 victories over Barrera and Solis. Pacquiao’s 12-round split decision victory over Marquez earlier this year not only avenged a disputed draw from their 2004 battle, it also made Pacman a four-division world champion.
Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, will be making the second defense of his title. He successfully defended it against the three-division world champion Morales last summer winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over the future Hall of Famer. Although behind on the scorecards early, Diaz remained cool and rallied before the raucous hometown Chicago crowd of 10,000 to capture the decision. He swept the championship rounds and won the decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112. With the victory, Diaz cemented his place among the best lightweights in the sport and one of the most popular and respected athletes in the sports-crazy town of Chicago. A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, Diaz, with 12 years of experience as a professional, is more than prepared to handle the pressures that come with battling boxing’s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter.
The Pacquiao vs. Diaz pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. Don King Presents Prizefighter
Best Kept Secret in Women’s Boxing Challenges for IFBA World Title
HENDERSON, Nevada– The best kept secret in women’s professional boxing today, Crystal Hoy, will not be a mystery to her next opponent, IFBA World flyweight champion Elena “Baby Doll” Reid, in their 10-round title fight on Thursday night, June 12 on Fox Sports Net’s Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period card at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period, presented by Cappiello Boxing in association with Hollybrook Regency, Inc., is headlined by a 10-round championship fight between IFBA World junior featherweight champion Lisa “Bad News” Brown (14-3-3, 4 KOs) and challenger Alicia “Slick” Ashley (14-7-1, 1 KO).
Hoy (3-1-2, 2 KOs), fighting out of Las Vegas, is a late replacement for Russian invader Anastasia Toktaulova (12-8, 2 KOs), whose visa problems prevented her from taking on Reid (19-4-5, 5 KOs) for the IFBA crown.
Up until a surprisingly strong performance this past February 29 against NABF title-holder Monica Lovato (11-1), Hoy was a relatively unknown having fought only four times between 2002 and 2004. She hadn’t been in action since November 19, 2005 when she walked up the three steps into the ring to face Lovato in their 8-round title fight. The dangerous Hoy floored Lovato twice in the seventh round but she lost a controversial decision (74-76, 74-76, 74-75) in Lovato’s hometown of Albuquerque that was met by heavy booing upon announcement. After the fight Lovato called Hoy an underestimated, hard hitter who was her toughest opponent.
Hoy and Reid, however, are not strangers and Elena won’t make the mistake of underestimating Crystal. They both live and train in Las Vegas, where they have also sparred. “Crystal’s a great fighter who has a great trainer (Jessie Reid),” Reid said. “I saw what she did to my friend Monica Lovato and I respect Crystal a lot. I prepared for two months to fight Toktaulova and I’m disappointed in few people because they had plenty of time to get her visa straightened out. Crystal is much bigger than Toktaulova but I’m a fighter and at least I know Crystal.
We’ve sparred and two weeks is more than enough time for me to prepare to fight her.
“You know, I really love everything about boxing. It’s tough to explain. I’m really excited to be fighting on the East Coast. Some of my friends, family and fans will be there and others all across North America can watch me fight on Fox Sports Net and see what I’m all about. I’m so excited to be part of this show. Judy (Kulis, IFBA president) puts us all in great match-ups and she does a great service to women’s boxing in the United States. We’re not trying to take away from men’s boxing; we want to add to boxing. Women’s boxing is further along everywhere else in the world than the United States. I could fight in Europe, Japan or Korea and make a lot more money, but I’m an American and I want to help women’s boxing grow by fighting here. Shows like this one, especially with these kinds of match-ups, are what’s been lacking in this country.”
Las Vegas undefeated mega-star Melinda Cooper (18-0, 10 KOs) kick-starts her comeback after nearly 18 months of inactivity against vaunted knockout specialist Donna “Nature Girl” Biggers (19-7-1, 16 KOs), of Shelby, North Carolina, in a special 6-round junior featherweight bout.
Also on the undercard in a pair of 6-rounders, junior featherweight contender Jeri Stizes (14-7-1, 6 KOs), of Springfield, Missouri, faces tough Ela “Bam Bam” Nunez (6-3, 2 KOs), fighting out of Jamestown, New York, while popular Jill Emery (8-2, 3 KOs) and experienced Cristy “Code Red” Nickel (7-6, 4 KOs) -- both fighting out of New York City, college graduates and physical training instructors – meet in an entertaining junior middleweight bout.
Tickets are priced at $10.00, $25.00 and $40.00 and on sale at the Mohegan Sun box office or online at www.mohegansun.com.
Go to www.ifba.com for more information. The undercard will start a 7 PM/ET, followed by the first of three scheduled televised bouts beginning at 8 PM/ET.
IFBA
Since its inception in 1997, the IFBA has sanctioned more than 100 women’s title bouts and was the first to sanction all-women’s cards on cable and broadcast television, including ESPN2, USA Network, Pay-Per-View, Fox Sports International and on SBS, MBC and MBC-ESPN in Korea. With the help of various State Boxing Commissions, the IFBA established many of the rules used in the sport today. The IFBA is sanctioning four championship bouts June 13, featuring a showdown between Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm and Mary Jo Sanders for the vacant IFBA World junior middleweight title and pound-for-pound supremacy, live on pay-per-view television from Albuquerque. For more information, visit www.IFBA.com.

JR. MW James Moore calls out Kirkland & Angulo
Photo of James Moore & promoter Tommy Gallagher – taken by Robert Mladinich
Undefeated junior middleweight James Moore calls out the division’s young guns: Kirkland, Angulo, Hearns, Wolak, Tsurkan
Undefeated junior middleweight James Moore, a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, New York, can’t wait to open the televised portion of ESPN 2’s Wednesday Fights on June 4 at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY. As a veteran of 314 amateur fights and the onetime captain of the Irish national amateur team, he is much too experienced to underestimate his opponent, Gabriel Rosada, 9-2 (6 KOS), of Philadelphia.
The main event will feature Yusaf Mack, 24-2-2 (15 KOS), of Philadelphia vs. Daniel Judah, 22-2-3 (10 KOS), of Brooklyn. At stake will be the vacant NABA light heavyweight title. The show is being promoted by Winky Wright Promotions, in association with Thomas Gallagher Productions.
Being the confident young man that he is, Moore expects to defeat Rosada handily. He will then actively campaign to secure the most challenging fights available. There are scores of young guns in his division, and he is eager to fight any of them right now.
They include James Kirkland, 22-0 (14 KOS), of Austin, TX; Alfredo Angulo, 13-0 (10 KOS), a Mexican who resides in California; Ronald Hearns, 18-0 (14 KOS) of Detroit; and New York rivals Pawel Wolak, 21-0 (14 KOS); and Andrey Tsurkan, 26-3 (17 KOS).
“Kirkland and Angulo looked good on HBO After Dark a few weeks ago, so why not put them back on the network with me as the opponent,” said Moore. “I’d be happy to go in there in the role of the opponent because I know what I can do.”
A while back representatives of Hearns inquired about fighting Moore on HBO. When the Moore camp immediately accepted the bout, the Hearns camp expressed no further interest.
“They came to us, we didn’t go to them,” said Harry Keitt, who has trained Moore for his entire career. “When we accepted the fight, they did their research and everyone they talked to said they wouldn’t win.”
Moore is not the type to bash anyone in print, but has no problem bashing them in the ring. He recently returned from Sicily where he helped IBF junior welterweight champion Paul “Magic Man” Malignaggi prepare for his May 24 title defense against Lovemore N’dou. Malignaggi has stated on numerous occasions that Moore might look like a lamb but he is a tiger in the ring.
“He’d knock his mother out in sparring,” said the Magic Man. “Don’t let his (boyish) looks fool you. When he’s in the ring, he’s a different guy, an animal.”
Promoter Tommy Gallagher, who starred in season one of “The Contender” reality television series, says Moore is one of the top prospects in the world. Former heavyweight contender Seamus McDonagh says Moore is the most confident fighter he’s ever met, and HBO judge Harold Lederman said Moore would be ideally matched with either Kirkland or Angulo.
Moore knows how important a victory over Rosada is on June 4, because it will lay the foundation for what he is sure will be a championship reign in the future.
“I’m not one to talk smack about anyone,” said Moore. “I respect all fighters, but I’m 30 years old and I have been wanting to make my move for a long time. No disrespect to Rosada, but I wouldn’t want to be him and have to fight me on Wednesday night.”
The Aviator Sports Complex is located on Flatbush Avenue, just south of the Belt Parkway, Exit 11S, Brooklyn, NY 11234. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M.
For tickets call Gleason’s Gym at 718-797-2872. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities contact Tommy Gallagher at 917-774-3517.

GARY SHAW, EliteXC Live Events President
“I want to thank everybody for being here. Saturday, at 9 p.m., on CBS is going to be a tremendous, historic night for mixed martial arts and EliteXC is proud to present it to the millions and millions watching on television and live in attendance. No one is going to be disappointed. CBS, its announcers, the production team, all of us at ProElite and EliteXC, the fight team, could not be happier or more excited.
A special thanks to Ken Hershman (Senior Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports Programming, Matt Blanc (Chief Executive Officer, SHOWTIME) and SHOWTIME – without them, none of this would have been possible.
I also want to thank the press for the outstanding job they have done for this mega event. We are on the front pages of sports sections. The turnout here is outstanding. So, thanks to all of you.
I would have our fighters fight with another organization. I have said all along, the UFC is a fine organization. They are nice people. They put on some of the finest fights in the world, but it is not the only organization that has fine fighters or fights.
We will hopefully announce the next CBS fight on Saturday. There are two parts of it – it is CBS programming making sure it doesn’t conflict with any other commitments and it is us getting the right venue. Those are the two things we are working on right now. I can tell you it will be late summer to very early fall. (But) Pray for us for Saturday first.
Ticket sales are at about 7,000 right now. We are happy about it. In-arena ticket sales may be hurt because of the area and because it is going to be on primetime television. I think we have done such a spectacular job talking about CBS that it is almost like people want to stay home and watch it on CBS and have a party.
Roughly 96 percent of the CBS affiliates are showing the fight card. Every major market is showing the fight.
It won’t be much different of a format. For us, we have been on SHOWTIME which is a network that is advertising free. We will roll out the show in the same manner, but will have commercial breaks. The in-arena atmosphere will be high energy and entertaining. Commercials will be the only difference. We are not going to cut away right before a knock out.’’
DOUG DELUCA, Executive Chairman, ProElite, Inc.
“First of all, I want to thank my wife and my baby in the first row. Without them, I wouldn’t be on this wild ride with Gary and Kelly (Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President, CBS Primetime). Thank you to all the press. I am an entertainment guy myself, so to see all of the support for this sport in its shining moment is an amazing thing. This is being broadcast in many other countries. We are in for one hell of a night. You know in a business when the team is gelling. Everybody is working like a team.
Gary said most of the thank yous, but I want to say a big thank you to our partners, SHOWTIME and, now, CBS, who have thrown all the guns at this. You see the press this is getting. You see the promos surrounding the event. They (both) promised they would be a true partner and they have been a true partner. Everyone is really in for a treat. It is really going to be a special event. I am as excited as Gary. This is a first-class announce team. This team is excited. They are working overtime on their own. They know they sport. They are meeting with the athletes.
I always say when I talk about broadcasting how the NFL taught viewers how to watch football. We are going to help the viewers who not-yet fans of MMA, tell them about MMA and draw them in. Anyone who gives it a chance will fall in love with the sport and be compelled by it.
The huge thanks is to our fighters. They put so much pressure on themselves each time they compete. The pressure that this event has added to these guys, I don’t envy. They are all doing it with smiles. My hat is off to you guys. A heartfelt thanks for a great event. Win, lose or draw, you are all champs.
The ProElite team has been working hard for over a year. We promised that it would come together and it will come together on Saturday night. I hope to see all of your there and thank you from the bottom of my heart.’’
EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw speaks at a jam-packed dais during the final press conference for "CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS'' Thursday at Spotlight Live in downtown Manhattan, N.Y. The history-making, first-ever mixed martial arts event in primetime on network television will be shown this Saturday, May 31, on the CBS Television Network (9 p.m.-11 p.m. ET/PT).
GARY SHAW ON KIMBO
"The first time I introduced Kimbo, I was introducing him as a YouTube sensation with over 10 million hits. I knew he was a star then. I knew he could be a superstar. There are great basketball players, but nothing like Michael Jordan. There are great golfers, but nothing like Tiger Woods. Every once in a while there is someone who crosses over that line to a superstar. You just know. When Mike Tyson walked in, the place erupted. When someone else walked in there were only a few claps. Well, Kimbo Slice is a superstar. He is probably the most recognizable name in all of MMA. On May 31, when he gets in the cage, he will be the single most known face of MMA.
(UFC’s) Dana White will be at home watching us on CBS. When he rips Kimbo Slice, it only proves he is an idiot. When he says that BJ Penn is the best fighter in the whole family and can knock out Kimbo Slice, the DEA should raid his home. I know BJ Penn would never say that and is probably embarrassed. Although BJ Penn is the best fighter in the family, he’s not the smartest Penn (JD, his brother, is an executive at EliteXC).
If you want to do something good for the sport, you should support CBS. Whether Kimbo has two fights, or six, he is raising the tide of MMA. All ships rise with the tide. The fighters on this card have said it. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. He trains with Bas Rutten. If you train with him, you are a real fighter. Randy (Khatami), the whole camp you see, are not paid by Kimbo. They are a family. He is first class. He is the closest thing I know to Tyson. He has an off and off switch. When he is off, you would have him baby sit your kids without a second thought. When it is on, someone is in trouble for sure.
Kimbo has a complex side to him as well. He is intelligent. He is well-read, well-versed. He is street through and through. He has not forgotten where he came from. On the bus ride over here, he told me he bought two 26-inch TVs and is going to give them to someone needy in the work area in Newark. He wants to leave Newark with a positive impression. It not only says something about Kimbo but the MMA family. I am telling you, Kimbo Slice is real.
We are up for the challenge in a cage. When this is over, you will be proud that Kimbo has represented MMA. You will be proud he is a family man and has taken care of his kids. You will find when the story is over that Kimbo rose to the occasion as a standup guy. He is our franchise player right now. The guys that has helped us more than he knows. I have called upon him more than any other athlete."
KIMBO
“I don’t have much to say. I was to thank CBS and EliteXC. CBS rules.
I don’t feel like all the pressure is on me to perform a certain way. Not at all.
I don’t underestimate any fighter. Just because he has lost a couple fights, doesn’t mean he isn’t going to come out strong.’’
“JAMES THOMPSON
“It is a wonderful opportunity for me. I have come in nice and quiet and I am looking forward to it. It has been a long time coming to get on CBS. I am very lucky and I look forward to making the most of it.’’
“RUTHLESS’’ ROBBIE LAWLER
“I don’t have much to say. I’m ready to fight. It is nice to be on CBS. I am going to put on a show.’’
SCOTT “HANDS OF STEEL’’ SMITH
"I have to thank my family and friends. They have followed me from Vegas to Miami to Ireland and now to New Jersey. They support and believe in me. They know what I am capable of and now it is time to show the fans that tune into CBS. This fight is a dream fight for me. Robbie is an exciting fighter and a great champion, but I believe that I can be a champion. These guys are awesome. Once again, this is a fight I would buy on pay-per-view to watch. It is great that everyone will be able to see it. Thanks to CBS for allowing me to be a part of it.’’
GINA CARANO
“I would like to thank my fans, all the people that have supported me and God. I think Kaitlin is a great opponent for me. (We’re going to) blow the (heck) of our women’s MMA. I appreciate everyone’s support and I hope the fight goes well. I’m ready. Let’s do it.
It depends on the day if I feel pressure. Sometimes I feel pressure. Sometime it depends on the hour. Sometimes I say ‘forget about the pressure.’ I am just another human being that is living and doing the best I can. I am doing surprisingly well today. I am looking forward to the fight. I want to get this fight over and jump into the gym and train for the next one.
I think Kaitlin is going to be one of my tougher matchups. I think this is going to be a very big test of what I am capable of doing. I hope it comes out good. You can only hope for the best.’’
KAITLIN YOUNG
"I want to thank EliteXC, CBS and ProElite. I think it will be a great fight. We bring out the best in each other. I think that women’s MMA has been overlooked in other leagues until EliteXC came around. I am really excited and honored. I have trained harder for this fight than I ever have. I’m excited to put on a good fight for you on Saturday night."
JOEY VILLASENOR
"I want to say what an honor it is for a veteran like me to fight on such a big card. We are making history, not only for MMA and EliteXC, but for my family. From that night on, my family lives forever. That gives me nothing but great pride. They are going to have a chance to see all of us fighters. Everyone is going to have a chance to see us, family men and real people. It is a chance to get new fans out there. I can’t wait to perform on Saturday. I feel like I am at my best. What an honor.’’
PHIL BARONI
“I am just a fighter. I am here to fight. Once I step in the cage, I am just here to fight no matter how many TV’s are on it.
“I am ready to stomp this guy. He knows it and I know it.’’
JON MURPHY
“I just want to thank Gary and EliteXC, ProElite and CBS. I have been doing this for five years or so and I am glad to be a part of it. We had always hoped that it would get to this level. It is going to gain a lot of fans. I am looking forward to Saturday’s fight.
I am excited to have the first fight. It is a good way to set the tone. When Brett and I go out there and have a great fight, we will set the tone for the evening.
Being on network TV is a huge step for all that is happening in MMA. It is going to be showing to the widest audience possible. It is obviously going to pick up more fans. It is perfect for me.
Brett’s a big, strong guy. He fights hard. He is a pretty athletic guy from what I have seen. I think our styles match up perfectly and it is going to be a great fight. Of course, I am going to win. I don’t predict, I just go and fight. This is the best shape I have been in, so I am ready to rock.
I donated 15 inches of my hair to “Locks of Love” back on Jan. 1. That is pretty much why I grew it in the first place – two and a half years worth.’’
BRETT ROGERS
I would like to thank EliteXC for allowing me to be a part of this. This is real big thing to be on CBS. I have been fighting for five or six years. I never thought I’d be here today. I’d like to thank my family, friends and sponsors. We are the first show and I know it will be exciting.
It means a lot to be the first fight on such a big night. I’m thankful that EliteXC is even allowing me a chance. I am respectful for that. But I’ve been working hard and deserve this. I am definitely going to take my time and win each fight.
I predict our fight is going to be stand and bang unless he decides he wants to take me to the ground. If he wants to hold me, I might play into his game, but I say I win by KO.
It’s funny. Every time Kimbo has fought, I’ve been on the same fight card. I have my views on it, but it is good because everyone wants to see the show. He is the highlight right now. At least people can see me too and I can catch the eyes of the fans. Once I get to his level, there will be no surprises. Everyone will know what I am capable of doing and they will love what they see.’’
GUS JOHNSON, Play-By-Play Announcer
“I’d like to say it’s an honor to work with these artists from the world of mixed martial arts. They are truly real, live warriors. I think we all can learn a lot from their passion, commitment and dedication. This is a sport that has to be given the proper credit for shows like this. These great artists will start to gain recognition nationally and internationally with this broadcast on CBS.
I have had an opportunity to call a lot of major national events with the National Football League on CBS, the NCAA Tournament and I am the voice of the Knicks. I have had a chance to call boxing at Madison Square Garden at a very high level. I have had the opportunity to train as a boxer, to study as a kung fu artist, and most recently to take up jiu-jitsu.
This sport is the sport of the future. It takes a very intelligent person to be able to fight in so many different ways whether that be standing or a jiu-jitsu man using guillotines. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved. I love this sport and it is a rising sport for kids of all ages, especially that 15-22 demographic. I believe there are jiu-jitsu academies and martial art studios popping up all over the county because of it. I really believe mixed martial arts and, hopefully EliteXC, will lead the way to a whole new era in American sports.’’
FRANK SHAMROCK, Analyst
"I certainly know what it feels like to throw some kicks and punches. I’ve done all that stuff. I am honored to be the commentator for this momentous event. Mixed martial arts is a lifestyle. It’s an art form. It is a mini-movement in the USA and around the world. For some reason right now, making a living through fighting and having a purpose for that and representing your family, your community, yourself in a professional fashion has just become fashionable and I appreciate that. I have been that guy for some time. I plan to call it like I see it. I plan to put my special flavor on it, which is to tell the truth. I am proud to be part of such an amazing movement at such an amazing time. Hopefully, I have some good years left in me. It is an honor to be here. Thank you for this.’’
MAURO RANALLO, Analyst
"I want to thank ProElite and everyone involved. I want to thank SHOWTIME and of course the people at CBS for having the foresight to bring the greatest sport to the forefront. I am deeply honored and thrilled to be a part of this landmark event. I have been a fan of Gus Johnson for many years. I think we have the same passion and intensity. I know he is going to be tremendous for this sport. Of course, Frank Shamrock is a pioneer in the sports of MMA, an entertainer and definitely one of the most educated people when it comes to articulating our sport. I think it is up to me and the other commentators to tell the story of all of these tremendous athletes up here. They are all intelligent, all educated, all of them champions in there specialty whether it is judo, boxing. It is a dawn of a new era in mixed martial arts. I had the opportunity to commentate in Japan where there were 35,000-40,000 people in the stands and they were front page the next day. It is about time that MMA is front page news for the right reasons here. We are all going to entertain and educate. These fighters are going to put on one hell of a show. Enjoy the show. Thank you very much."
KARYN BRYANT, Reporter
“Thank you, Gary and Ken. I was so glad someone came and asked me to do this. This is going to be amazing. I have been a fan of this sport for several years. This is the wave of the future. This is the sport of right now. We already get along great, the announce team. I think the enthusiasm, passion and love we have for this sport will really show. I am really glad to see Gina and Kaitlyn here. I’m glad there are women on the card. It is really a thrill to see that and introduce people to the sport. ‘We’ love fighting just as much as the guys. I think it is going to be a win-win for everyone. I’m pleased, thrilled. I’ve been a MTV vee-jay, I’ve sat behind the desk at CNN. I love this job. It’s a blast. Thank you again for giving me the opportunity. I think it is going to be great.’’
NICK LEMBO, NJ Sports Commission
“There is a middle school here where we used to have MMA shows. Within six years, we’ve gone from middle school to primetime network television on CBS. I think it is great for the sport. I’m very glad Gary selected New Jersey as the host venue. It’s a huge moment for the sport.’’
JOY GULLEDGE, Prudential Center
"On behalf of ownership at the AEG facility. I am happy to be here. We are a very new building and are excited to ride the wave of excitement surrounding MMA. We are looking forward to an exciting event. We hope to see everyone there."

DAVID DIAZ JOINS MANNY PACQUIAO FOR SATURDAY BAY AREA OPEN WORKOUT
CHICAGO, IL- World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz will jet to California this weekend to join boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in an open workout for Bay Area fans and media this Saturday, May 31st.
The open workouts will take place at the West Wind School, 1551 University Ave. (between California and Sacramento Streets) in Berkeley. Diaz will hit the ring promptly at 11am with Pacquiao following at 12noon.
Diaz is currently training in Chicago for his world title defense against Pacquiao set for June 28th at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada..
Said Diaz after a vigorous sparring session at JABB Boxing Gym in Chicago, “It’s a quick trip but it gives me a chance to work in front of the fans and media in the Bay Area. I fought there as an amateur in 1995 and the fans were very supportive so I’m looking forward to this trip.”
Further updates on Diaz’s preparation can be viewed at his blog on the Chicago Sun-Times website at www.suntimes.com/sports/boxing . Additional information can also be viewed at his website www.diazboxing.com and at www.toprank.com
Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions, Pacquiao vs. Diaz will take place Saturday, June 28, at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. The 12-round lightweight championship bout will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 P.M. ET /6 P.M. PT.
“This will be my hardest-fought battle,” said Pacquiao. “It’s been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division’s world champion. I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I’m expecting to see the same firepower out of him when we meet. But this is my drive for five. Five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for my people of the Philippines.”
"Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans like Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Larios and Solis. That's why they call him “The Mexicutioner,” said Diaz. “I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He’s a great champion but he’s fighting in my division – lightweight. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him."
“Two world champions, at the top of their game, matching each other in speed, power, stamina and courage is a recipe for a great fight,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Manny has never felt the power thrown at this weight class just as Diaz has never gone toe-to-toe with such a human dynamo. But Manny possesses an inner strength from his fellow countrymen the likes I have never seen as a promoter with over 40 years of experience. Manny is more than a national treasure to the Philippines, he is the very symbol of its national pride. He doesn’t fight for himself, he fights for his people. It’s a responsibility that no other athlete could, or attempt to, accomplish.”
“Boxing fans recognize that in Pacquiao vs. Diaz you have one of the sport’s best fighters and biggest attractions moving up in weight to challenge a bigger, stronger champion,” said HBOPPV’s Mark Taffet. “It’s a very intriguing proposition and we look forward to the event."
The Genuine Nature of Jerson Ravelo

Boxing Herald's, Chris Robinson sits down for an exclusive interview with Jerson Ravelo
Jerson Ravelo
Have a good talk with super middleweight Jerson Ravelo and it might be hard afterwards to associate him with a sport as cruel and punishing as boxing. Ravelo is a man who is extremely positive in his ways and it's hard to find a mean streak in the Dominican Republic native. Maybe his kindness comes from his upbringing or perhaps it stems from his learning lessons while being involved in the sport, but either way, Ravelo's humble nature seems to be what largely defines him.
Jerson Ravelo and Andre Ward
As he prepares for a June 20 showdown with undefeated Andre Ward, Ravelo is at a crossroads in his career. Just four years ago Ravelo was undefeated and on the verge of taking his career to new heights. An unexpected loss to David Lopez in April of 2004 saw Ravelo lose both his undefeated record and the support from many around him. Ravelo regrouped well, but another loss to Allan Green would follow in October of 2006, again setting the New Jersey resident back. Now sporting an 18-2 record with 10 knockouts, Ravelo has carved out a career that has been highly respectable yet still unfulfilled in many areas.
The losses in his career have been hard to take, but the lessons that Ravelo has learned along the way are priceless. Learning the true meaning of friendship and support after his setbacks, Ravelo is a man reluctant to give his trust to just anyone. And these days, he spends much of his time to himself. He knows what it is to be at both ends of the spectrum, as he was once an undefeated prospect on the rise and now finds himself as the underdog to the younger, undefeated Ward -- a 2004 Athens Olympics gold medalist. It may not have been scri pted the way he liked, but Jerson Ravelo's career has introduced him to a healthy dose of the good and bad associated within the sport. To his credit, Ravelo has remained steadfast throughout and a victory over Ward on June 20 will allow him to turn the tables in his favor.
Just weeks away from a pivotal make or break moment in his career, Ravelo was calm and low key as he spoke about his past experiences within the sport. In his own words, this is what Jerson Ravelo had to say about his showdown with Andre Ward, his childhood days, his early years in boxing, his dreams in life, and more…

Coming to Win…
"I'm not really looking at my fight with Andre Ward as far as my advantages go. I don't want to look at it like that. I think it's a very interesting matchup. We have similar styles. He has shown his ability in previous fights and I think it's a good matchup. I just think that he's coming to win, I'm coming to win and whoever wants it more and is more determined will be the victorious one."
Early years…
"I was born in the Dominican Republic. I came to the United States when I was eight years old. Coming up as a kid I didn't have the things that other kids had. I didn't have games, toys, or bikes to entertain myself but I still managed. I usually tried to stay out of trouble and I always wanted to box. I ended up starting when I was twelve years old. I had an uncle who always tried to round kids up in the neighborhood to box each other. He had a pair of gloves and that's basically when it started for me. I tried it once and the love for boxing grew from there."
Coming to America…
"I moved to New Jersey and I've lived here all my life ever since I came to this country. As a kid, coming from a very poor country at the time, you could imagine how I felt coming to America. I was able to experience things that I never saw before. Back in my country I remember people being on horses and in America I was able to take in a whole new culture with new cars and things like that."
Jerson Ravelo and Giovanni Lorenzo
Dominican Heritage…
"My heritage is important to me. I represented the Dominican Republic in the 2000 Olympics even though my goal was to fight for the United States. I started my career in the US, was ranked #1 here and represented the United States in the world championships. Basically my whole career was here in the United States and it would have been nice to represent the US but it was still and honor to represent my country. I always have a flag on my trunks and I come to the ring with Meringue' which is typical Dominican music. So I represent my country very well."
Taking Whatever Comes Your Way…
"I might not even finish if I start talking about all the things I have had to overcome. From injuries to people giving up on me and turning their backs on me, you name it and I've been through it. I've always said that all the things a fighter goes through in their career are things I experienced at the beginning of my career. From not being able to get fights to not finding someone to represent me, to not having enough money for equipment, from taking low pay for fights just to stay busy. Sometimes you can't negotiate because you're just in a position to take whatever comes your way."
Down to Earth…
"I think I'm a pretty down to earth person. I love helping people and I love working with kids. My son has a little league baseball team and I am one of the coaches, and I do it without expecting anything in return. If I could help anyone I would. If I see somebody on the street and they are hungry I would pay for them to eat even if I only had ten dollars in my pocket. I'm that type of person and people can count on me. I'm one of the most loyal people that you will meet."
Jerson Ravelo and Paulie Malignaggi
Self Belief…
"Self belief is very important. A lot of people have given up on me throughout my career and it got to a point where I almost gave up on myself. I felt like nobody had my back and I asked myself how I could get anywhere like that. I almost gave up but then I realized some things after going to camp with Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver. After working with these guys I realized that I was giving these guys great work to the point where I felt that if it was a real fight I probably would have won that fight. Then I just realized I still had a lot to offer to the sport."
Danny Jacobs and Jerson Ravelo
A Good Ride…
"Getting to the Olympics was one of my greatest career moments. Not every fighter can say they went the Olympic Games and that's something I can tell my kids years from now. Not many athletes in general can say that but I can and it's one of my career highlights. As far as turning pro, my first time fighting at Madison Square Garden was another highlight for me. I've fought on many famous fighters' undercards and appeared on television myself. I could go on and on. It's been a good ride for me but I have to capitalize on this fight so that I can be the one guy who people are talking about."
Making Yourself Happy…
"People will criticize you no matter what. People will always have their say, it's just a matter of how you deal with it. I don't really pay to much mind to what people say. I know that I am a good fighter, I know that I prepare hard for every fight and I know that I give it my all when I'm in the ring. If a fighter is a better fight than me, so be it, but I'm not going to worry about what other people have to say. You can't worry about making everyone happy, you have to make yourself happy before anyone else."
Realizing a Dream…
"I've met a lot of interesting people through boxing. From people in other spots such as Basketball, Hockey, and Football to Politicians, I've met and networked with all kinds of people. I've been trying to get a gym going for about six or seven years now and I'm just now getting ready to do it. I want to do it for the kids because it's something that has kept me off the streets. It was always a dream of mine that I was never able to do but because of certain people I've met through the sport, they have been able to help me do it."
Jerson Ravelo and Joe Calzaghe
Family First…
"To tell you the truth, my family is most important to me. That's part of the reason I have to do good in this sport. I like to take care of my family because they are the ones who never turned their backs on me. I feel like I owe it to them to do my best to show them I appreciate everything they did for me."
Trusting Those Around You…
"One thing that I've learned through boxing is to pay attention to those around you. When I first started out I was doing really well, winning my fights and making decent money. I had people who were always claiming to be my best friend and certain people were always attached to me. Once things started going in a different direction for me, that all changed. My back started bothering me, then I broke my hand, suffered my first loss, and next thing I know all these people around me just scattered. All those people who were my best of friends I couldn't find anymore once I needed some help. I even tried reaching out to some of them in times of need and they just denied me the opportunity. Learning about that was one of the main lessons I have kept with me and it all comes back to trusting the people you have around you and staying with positive people."
The Jerson Ravelo-Andre Ward showdown takes place Friday, June 20 on ShoBox: The New Generation. The Showtime televised telecast kicks off at 11 PM/ET.
