USA BOXING NEWS; Three London Hopefuls Advance to the U.S. O lympic Team Trials for Women’s Boxing in Spokane

Six action-filled bouts highlighted Thursday night’s competition at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Women’s Boxing at the Northern Quest Resort. The winners bracket competitors returned to action on Thursday to battle for a coveted spot in Saturday’s championship bout. The challengers bracket boxers took the ring as well, fighting for their tournament lives in three contests.

Flyweight Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) clinched the first berth in Saturday’s final round contest in a close bout with Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.). Esparza held the lead after every round, but Cruz kept the match close throughout all four rounds. Cruz managed to tie the bout up during the final round but Esparza quickly reclaimed the lead en route to a 13-10 final decision.

The second spot in the championship round went to Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) but it didn’t come easy. Nineteen-year-old Kent State student N’yteeyah Sherman (Barberton, Ohio) utilized her long reach and active pace to claim a one-point lead after each of the three round, but Underwood wouldn’t be denied in the fourth. Underwood kept up the pressure over the final two minutes to win a 25-24 final decision and a berth in the final bout.

Sixteen-year-old Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) has impressed the crowd throughout the tournament and Thursday was no exception. Shields battled two-time light heavyweight national champion Tika Hemingway (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the winners bracket finale. Shields built up a strong 20-9 lead after three rounds and despite Hemingway’s best efforts, she couldn’t overcome her opponent’s advantage. Shields won a 23-15 decision to claim the third spot in Saturday’s championship round.

In challengers bracket action, middleweight Raquel Miller (San Francisco, Calif.) continued her surprising run by knocking off top seed Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) in the middleweight contest. Miller took control of the bout in the second round and didn’t let it go, winning a 26-15 final decision. She will face Hemingway in Friday’s challengers bracket final.

2011 National Golden Gloves champion Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.) kept her Olympic dreams alive with a 23-18 victory over 2011 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Tiara Brown (Washington DC). Mayer will battle Sherman tomorrow night for the lightweight spot in the finals with Underwood.

In the first challengers bracket bout, two-time USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Tyrieshia Douglas (Baltimore, Md.) won a 31-19 decision over Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) to move on to a rematch with Cruz.

The three challengers bracket final bouts will begin at 8 p.m. PT on Friday at the Pend Oreille Pavilion while the three finalists enjoy a second day off. Universal Sports will once again live stream the bouts and Friday’s action can be viewed at: http://www.universalsports.com/video/assetid=f7b8a492-bdd5-490a-b5f4-ed7dc13b96c4.html.

BROADWAY BOXING SERIES RETURNS MARCH 7 AT BB KINGS BLUES CLUB IN NYC

On Wednesday, March 7, DiBella Entertainment's (DBE)"Broadway Boxing" series returns to B.B. King Blues Club in New York City, with an exciting eight-bout card, headlined by an intriguing 10-round welterweight matchup between undefeated up-and-coming prospect Alex Perez (15-0, 9KO's) taking on his toughest opponent to date in longtime contender Francisco "El Gato" Figueroa (20-3-1, 13KO's).

DBE kicked off the 2012 season of "Broadway Boxing" before a sold-out crowd that on January 21 with a thrilling night of action-packed fights that had a little bit of everything, including knockouts, wars, and upsets. Now DBE looks to keep the momentum rolling in its ninth consecutive season of the popular boxing series by putting on what promises to be another exciting event headlined by the explosive crossroads matchup between Perez and Figueroa.

Perez last saw action as the opening bout of the January 21 card, scoring a vicious second-round TKO over Josh Sosa (10-1). Prior to that victory, Perez had been out of action for over seven months recovering from a hand injury. With the hand now completely healed, Perez will look to begin his climb up the ranks of the welterweight division, but he must first take care of business against the extremely dangerous Figueroa.

The Bronx-native Figueroa, a former New York State and NABF light welterweight champion, has been a staple of the New York boxing scene since his amateur days. Figueroa will be returning to the ring for the first time since November 2009, as he embarks on another run toward a world championship.
Also scheduled to see action on the card is Queens-native, four-time NY Golden Gloves champion Will Rosinsky (14-1, 8KO's), DBE prospects Tor Hamer (13-1, 9KO's) and Luis Rosa (9-0, 5KO's), as well as an eight-round junior middleweight showdown between undefeated up-and-coming prospects Delen "The Sniper" Parsley (6-0, 2KO's) and Boyd "Rainmaker" Melson (8-0, 4KO's). A complete list of the undercard will be announced shortly.

Paul David To Face Travis Dickinson On 25th Feb - At Light Heavy

English Super Middleweight Champion Paul David is set to face Prizefighter - Light Heavyweight winner Travis Dickinson on the undercard of the Frank Maloney and Tommy Gilmore promoted Denis Shafikov versus Lee McAllister European Light Welterweight Title fight the Exhibition Centre in Aberdeen on Saturday 25th February.

Speaking earlier David, who will be making his first outing under the guidance of his new manager/coach TRAD TKO’s Johnny Eames, made it clear that he was relishing the prospect, “Yeah, I can’t wait, the fights on the undercard of Lee McAllister. I’ve fought up there before and Lee McAllister always sells out, so it’s going to be a packed hall.

I see Travis Dickinson earlier in his career, I didn’t think too much of him so was a bit surprised when he won Prizefighter at Light Heavy.

He’s going to be well prepared and up for it, but I’ve been here at the TKO about a month and half now and have been sparring with Leon (Williams), when he was British Champion, and had no problem with him. There’s Mitchell Balker from the Netherlands and I’ve had no problem with any of these guys.

They’re bigger guys than me but I use my speed and boxing skills to get around them, I’ll deal with Travis Dickinson the same way.

After I’ve dealt with Travis Dickinson I’m going to be looking for a British title fight, either the winner of Tony Bellew-Danny McIntosh or maybe I can get George Groves in the ring, hopefully Frank Warren can take his nappy off him and put him in with me like a real fighter.

I’ll get this fight out of the way then see what Johnny can do for me. All I want is either a serious English title defense, one that really means something, you know Robin Reid beat Daniel Cadman so maybe he’ll have the stones to step in the ring with me and we can start something like a British title eliminator so I can get at George Groves after he takes out his old foe Kenny Anderson.

Yeah, so it’s either Light Heavyweight or Super Middleweight works for me, even Cruiserweight, which is kind of weak at the moment, three divisions is open to me and I’m ready for all of them, I’m just ready to go.”

Johnny Eames then expanded on how the Dickinson fight was made, “Yeah, obviously since he joined us we have been trying to get Paul a fight, in the short time he’s been with us we have had numerous offers of fights, but each time the fight got close we heard nothing more.

I suppose we’ve had twelve different opponents he was going to have, including an English title defense against Patrick Mendy, which didn’t come around for no fault of our own.

Then Travis Dickinson was available, so I made the call to Frank Maloney and he said yes, so we can now get this show on the road and see what we’ve got.

This fights a six rounder at Light Heavyweight, not Super Middleweight - you know it’s a case of this week Light Heavyweight next week Super Middleweight with Paul, as all he wants to do is fight.”

Paul David against Travis Dickenson features on the undercard of the Denis Shafikov versus Lee McAllister’s European Light Welterweight title bout at the Exhibition Centre in Aberdeen on Saturday, 25th February.

Malik Scott Returns To Action Feb. 18 In Corpus Christi, TX‏

The very talented, big and gifted undefeated heavyweight, Malik Scott (32-0, 11 KOs) is back in business after over three years out of the ring, but still a young 31-year-old. Scott will be fighting Kendrick Releford (22-15-2, 10 KOs) on February 18, from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas underneath the "Triple Threat" event featuring Paul Williams, Tavoris Cloud and Chris Arreola. Although Scott owns a unanimous decision over the tough veteran in Releford, this bout is more about what Malik will bring into the ring next Saturday than who he's fighting.

The experts and media all agree, Scott has all the tools to win every time he steps into the ring. But thats where the rub is, when winning is just not good enough. It's the way he wins that has not endeared him to the fans and media looking for that next great American to hold the heavyweight championship. Fans want aggressive actions from their fighters today, along with everyone else, and Scott believes he got the message loud and clear and is prepared to add the last remaining ingredient to his natural born skills; "just fight!"

"I've come back strong from a lot of adversity and climbed a lot of obstacles to get to this point, physically and mentally," said Scott. "I'm totally reincarnated, and a completely different fighter than I was before, and I'm ready to show the people that a powerful American in the heavyweight division is right here, and I'm prepared to reintroduce them to that person next Saturday."

The pictures above illustrate the mindset of Scott in shedding many excess pounds toward his return to the ring with an estimated weight loss close to 30 pounds from when he last entered the ring.

"I'm excited to be fighting on SHOWTIME EXTREME, and I plan on taking full advantage of the opportunity. Kendrick Releford is a tough fighter, which is what I wanted in order to make a statement in my comeback fight. May God be with him when he gets in the ring with me. It is imperative for me to be aggressive and make people notice and I believe its all going to pay off come February 18 in Corpus Christi."

Promoter Dan Goossen said about Scott, "It's ironic, an undefeated big heavyweight, good-looking, great personality, well-spoken and still winning hasn't been good enough, which I understand as boxing fan. We (fans) want our fighters to be badasses in the ring, especially in the heavyweight division. I'm hoping the Malik we all see next week is the one that can add a dynamic to his already gifted abilities and add an aggression that will catch everyone's attention."

The SHOWTIME EXTREME card will also feature #1 WBC Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (33-2, 29 KOs) who takes on Texas' own Eric Molina (18-1, 14 KOs) and will lead into a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING event featuring Tavoris Cloud (23-0, 19 KOs) who is risking his IBF light heavyweight world championship against Gabriel Campillo (21-3-1, 7 KOs) and headlined by the return of two-time world champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams (40-2, 27 KOs) who will be taking on the challenge of former world champion and James Kirkland conqueror, Nobuhiro Ishida (24-6, 9 KOs).

LAMONT PETERSON VS. AMIR KHAN II IS SET FOR MAY 19! HIGHLY ANTICIPATED REMATCH LANDS AT MANDALAY BAY RESORT & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS WITH HBO TO TE

For 12 rounds last December, Lamont "Havoc" Peterson and Amir "King" Khan battled it out in one of the most compelling championship bouts of 2011. When it was over, controversy raged over the officiating and the final judges' verdict, but in the end Peterson won a split decision capturing Khan's world championship belts. On Saturday, May 19, the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. will host the highly anticipated Unified Super Lightweight World Title rematch the boxing world has clamored for as Lamont Peterson will defend his WBA World Super Championship and IBF World Championship against Khan in a fight televised live on HBO's World Championship Boxing.

Their first fight was a pitched and close battle waged in Peterson's hometown of Washington, DC that was considered by most boxing experts to be a "Fight of the Year" candidate. It was a classic battle of contrasting styles with Peterson brawling and banging while Khan used his lightning quick speed and boxing ability. The deduction of two points from Khan by the referee for a seldom-called foul (pushing) proved to be the difference in the outcome of the close fight, leading to questions being raised as to who actually deserved to win the decision. Khan immediately filed multiple protests following the fight, much to the ire of Peterson who felt Khan's actions tainted his victory and were an act of disrespect. On May 19, the fighters will have the opportunity to settle the score on neutral ground in Las Vegas.

"I feel really good about my decision," said Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO's). "I went over every option available to me in terms of the fights that were on the table. I weighed each one of them looking at the pros and the cons and at the end of the day this is the one that made the most sense all the way across the board. I want everyone to know that, as champion, it has always been up to me what fight to take next. I was not persuaded by any of the controversy or anything else. I just can't wait to fight. I told Khan after the press conference when I won that if it was up to me I would fight him on Sunday, but I had to get with my team to look at every option that was out there. I just want to be clear that I never said I wouldn't fight him, but I wanted to take a look at everything that was out there before I made a decision. I'm happy with the terms of the fight. It's at a neutral site and, when I beat him this time, he won't have anything to complain about."

"I'm delighted that I have finally been given the chance to avenge the result of my last fight," said Khan (26-2, 18 KO's). "It's clear I wasn't happy with what went on in the previous fight, but that takes nothing away from how Lamont Peterson fought. He showed tremendous heart that night, but now I have the chance to prove once and for all that I'm the very best in the division. I'm going to take care of business inside the ring and this fight is going to be just as exciting as the last one. The only difference is going to be in the outcome."

"I said before their first fight that this was an opportunity to see the two best super lightweights in the world compete at the highest level of the sport and neither Amir Khan or Lamont Peterson disappointed the fans," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "To see them fight again so soon after their first match on neutral ground in Las Vegas is a treat for boxing fans around the world."

"We are pleased with the decision to fight Khan for the second time," said Barry Hunter, manager and trainer of Lamont Peterson. "I was extremely proud of Lamont with respect to this process. He took his time and looked at all of his options and he decided this was the best option available. Our preparation for this fight will be the same, it is going to be a hard fight and we will be ready for the challenge."

Peterson vs. Khan II, a 12-round Unified Super Lightweight World Title Fight for Peterson's WBA World Super Championship and IBF World Championship taking place Saturday, May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Khan Promotions and Headbangers Promotions. The fight will be telecast live on HBO's World Championship Boxing.

RISING STARS JESSIE VARGAS & DEANDRE LATIMORE TO CO-HEADLINE SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION IN SEPARATE BOUTS ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24

Two rising Las Vegas stars with their sights set on world title fights in 2012 will step into the ring at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas on Friday, February 24, when unbeaten welterweight Jessie Vargas and hard-hitting junior middleweight Deandre Latimore co-headline a ShoBox: The New Generation doubleheader.

Both bouts, which are presented by Mayweather Promotions, are scheduled for 10 rounds and will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). Doors open on fight night at 6 p.m. with the first fight beginning at 6:30 p.m. Opponents for both fighters will be announced shortly.

Once considered the fight capital of the world's best kept secret, 22-year-old Jessie Vargas (17-0, 9 KO's) burst onto the global boxing scene in 2011 with a spectacular year that included early knockouts of former World Champion "Vicious" Vivian Harris and top contender Walter Estrada, but on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz in September, Vargas really showed off his skills and his heart when he scored a hard-fought decision win over then undefeated fellow rising star Josesito Lopez. Now hoping to keep the momentum going in 2012, Vargas will headline his first ShoBox telecast on February 24.

Twenty six-year old southpaw Deandre "The Bull" Latimore (22-3, 17 KO's) is a six-year professional whose exciting style and knockout power always get the fans on their feet. Latimore is a former world title challenger whose 2009 split decision loss to Cory Spinks in their IBF World Championship fight was one of the most controversial of that year. Bouncing back with wins in three of his next four fights, including two in a row, the St. Louis born Latimore is amped up for his first fight in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas and his first appearance on the acclaimed ShoBox series.

Cagri Ermis New WBF Middleweight World Champ

Cagri Ermis New WBF Middleweight World Champ

Germany’s Cagri Ermis reached the, at least so far, highlight of his
up-and-down career on Saturday night when he captured the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Middleweight title by defeating Portuguese Vitor Sa at the Braamkamp 1 arena in Hamburg.

With clever boxing from the outside, Ermis controlled the fight with sharp
and well-timed punches from the get-go, and rarely allowed Sa to get close enough to do any damage. The local man fought a very disciplined fight, and while game veteran Sa never stopped trying he was outboxed and
outmaneuvered by his younger foe.

Ermis was originally to challenge former Champion Karama Nyilawila for the
title last December, but first the bout was postponed when the German got
injured, and later the title was declared vacant when Nyilawila, overdue a
defense, decided not to honor his contract and instead take a non-title
bout, so Ermis did well to adjust to his new co-challenger.

After twelve interesting rounds, all three judges had Ermis a clear winner
by scores of 120-109 (Artur Ellensohn), 120-108 (Zbigniew Lagosz) and
117-111 (Timo Habighorst). Referee was Frank Michael Maass.

The new world champion improved his professional record to a deceivingly
modest 13-10-2 (4), while Vitor Sa dropped to 26-7 (5). The fight
headlined a massive show promoted by EC Boxpromotion.

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko vs Dereck Chisora February 18

The fight will air on Epix in the United States, as well as BoxNation in the U.K., and RTL in Germany. Vitali, 40, is a heavy favorite against Chisora, but while many feel the brash Brit mostly talked his way into this fight, he's fought his way here, too.

Booth: I’m looking forward to making my Channel 5 debut

Nottingham’s former IBF world title challenger Jason “2Smooth” Booth is looking forward to making his debut on Channel 5 this Saturday (18th February) when he enters the ring and challenges Sheffield’s Kid Galahad for the WBC International Super Bantamweight title. “I’m really looking forward to making my Channel 5 debut; I wish it had come 5 years earlier.” said Booth

The 12 round contests will be shown live and exclusive on Channel 5 from 9.55pm.

Booth, who has also held the British and Commonwealth belts and fought for the European title three times in his 44 fight career, was apprehensive at first when he got the call from his manager but after thinking it through he decided to accept the fight. “I was training hard before I got the call from my manager and at first I wasn’t sure whether to take it or not as it was only 4 weeks’ notice, but I was offered a good purse and the opportunity to fight live on Channel 5, so I couldn’t turn it down and it was also a 12 round fight and I like 12 rounder’s.” explained Jason.

“I’ve watched a few of Kid Galahad’s fights, He’s is a good Brendan Ingle fighter who is an awkward switch hitter and he’s known for being an elusive boxer, his team are writing me off, they think he can step up and beat me but I’m quietly confident I can outwit him.

“You also have to question whether Galahad can go the full 12 rounds as he’s only ever completed six.” Added Jason.

Booth, in contrast, has completed the championship course 13 times and as manager Jimmy Gill said: “Titles are won in the last six rounds.”
