"RING KINGS: MAYWEATHER VS. COTTO" TELEVISED PAY-PER-VIEW CARD SET JESSIE VARGAS VS. ALFONSO GOMEZ & DEANDRE LATIMORE VS. CARLOS QUINTANA F

"RING KINGS: MAYWEATHER VS. COTTO" TELEVISED PAY-PER-VIEW CARD SET

JESSIE VARGAS VS. ALFONSO GOMEZ AND

DEANDRE LATIMORE VS. CARLOS QUINTANA

TO BE FEATURED ON MAY 5 MEGA-EVENT

The "Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto" pay-per-view card is set and some of the toughest competitors in boxing today will be featured when undefeated rising star Jessie Vargas faces-off against perennial contender Alfonso Gomez and, in the opening pay-per-view bout, exciting 154 lb. contender DeAndre "The Bull" Latimore takes on former World Champion Carlos "El Indio" Quintana. The two 10-round bouts will take place prior to the WBA Super Welterweight Championship between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto and the Canelo Alvarez vs. Sugar Shane Mosley WBC Super Welterweight title bout Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Twenty-two-year-old Las Vegas resident Jessie Vargas (18-0, 9 KO's) is one of boxing's fastest rising stars with notable wins over Arturo Morua, Walter Estrada and former World Champion Vivian Harris. Last September on the Mayweather vs. Ortiz card, Vargas proved that he is one of boxing's top contenders with an exciting 10-round decision victory over fellow contender Josesito Lopez. Eager to keep his momentum going, Vargas scored a near-shutout win over Lanardo Tyner in February and is now hoping to add Alfonso Gomez to his collection of high-profile wins.

As a member of the cast in the hit boxing reality series "The Contender," Alfonso Gomez (23-5-2, 12 KO's) became the fighter to beat as he defeated the show's top contenders, as well as other top-tier opponents such as Ben Tackie, Jesus Soto Karass and World Champions Arturo Gatti and Jose Luis Castillo. A two-time world title challenger who faced Miguel Cotto in 2008 and Canelo Alvarez in 2011, the 31-year-old from Guadalajara begins another quest for the title on May 5.

Twenty-six-year-old St. Louis-native DeAndre Latimore (23-3, 17 KO's) now resides in Las Vegas and the change of scenery has done wonders for the aptly nicknamed "Bull." As a former super welterweight title challenger who lost a highly controversial split decision to Cory Spinks in 2009, Latimore is looking to regain momentum and battle his way back into title contention. With three consecutive wins, including a memorable 10-round victory over Milton Nunez in February, he is closing in on another shot at 154-pound gold.

Moca, Puerto Rico's Carlos Quintana (28-3, 22 KO's) is a southpaw like the St. Louis native Latimore; however, "El Indio" is more matador than bull, with his excellent boxing skills, which led him to a world welterweight title win in 2008 over a then-unbeaten Paul Williams. With wins over top contenders including Joel Julio, Francisco Campos and Nurhan Suleymanoglu, the 35-year-old Quintana has won three of his last four bouts, most recently stopping Yoryi Estrella in nine rounds in February of 2011.

Latimore vs. Quintana is presented in association with DiBella Entertainment.

"Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto," a 12-round fight for Cotto's WBA Super Welterweight World Championship is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions. Also featured will be Canelo Alvarez vs. Sugar Shane Mosley, a 12-round fight for Canelo's WBC Super Welterweight World Championship which is presented in association with Canelo Promotions and Sugar Shane Mosley Promotions. The mega event is sponsored by Corona, Hatfields & McCoys on HISTORY™, DeWalt Tools, AT&T, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Puebla-Cinco De Mayo and will take place Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Ana Julaton: Back in the ring on May 4, fighting Yolanda Segura!‏

Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton is proving herself to be just such a champion by stepping into the ring on May 4th, her first step towards winning another championship belt after her devastating loss in March.

Ana Julatan's (10-3-1, 1-KO) first comeback bout will be this coming Friday, May 4th in Kanasin, Yucatan, Mexico where she will fight a ten-rounder against the up-and-coming Mexican fighter, Yolanda "La Negra" Segura(8-3, 7-KOs).

The fight is being promoted by Orion Sports Management in partnership with Yucatan Boxing. It will also be broadcast to millions of Julaton's fight fans in the Philippines on theGMA network.

Having lost her WBO Female Super Bantamweight Title to Yesica Patricia Marcos on March 16th, Julaton has been quoted as saying, “That was not me in the ring last time out ... That environment worked against me in more ways than one and to top it off, I fought my opponent's fight. We all learn as we go and that will not happen again. I plan to fight to my strengths. This is all about winning. I owe my Filipino fans around the World that Title back and that is my mission."

Julaton's drive and determination have led her to a vigorous training schedule and a return to the fundamentals that have made her a great fighter. She is also jumping back into the ring a mere six weeks after her loss. That says a lot about her character and to my mind, we can all expect great things from her as she fights her way towards another shot at a title.

The following is the full fight of Ana Julaton's battle against Yesica Patricia Marcos. It'll be interesting to see how Julaton changes her game plan in her fight against Segura this Friday.

Mathis vs. Holm II Confirmed For WBF World Title

It’s now confirmed that a rematch between perhaps the two best
pound-for-pound female boxers in the world, and definitely the two best welterweights, Anne Sophie Mathis (26-1, 22 KOs) of France and American Holly Holm (30-2-3, 9 KOs), will take place on June 15 in Albuquerque, New Mexico for Mathis’ World Boxing Federation World Welterweight title.

This serves as clear indication that the WBF is already the top
sanctioning body for female boxing, and WBF president Howard Goldberg, who will be acting as supervisor for the bout, is delighted about the progress his organization has made in short time: “We have many of the absolute
best female boxers as our world champions, and it is only fitting that the
rematch between these two amazing fighters is for the WBF title. I think
it’s outstanding that the WBF is already at the very top when it comes to
women’s boxing, but I am not surprised that promoters and boxers are
realizing that our title is the title to pursue”.

Mathis and Holm had a grueling encounter last December with Mathis winning
by seventh round knockout. As their original fight, the rematch,
appropriately billed as “The Reckoning”, will take place at Route 66
Casino Hotel, and will be promoted by Fresquez Productions. It will be
Mathis’ third defense of the WBF World title she won in June of last year.

BERNARD HOPKINS & SETH MITCHELL LOOK TO THE FUTURE AFTER SATURDAY NIGHT BOUTS IN ATLANTIC CITY‏

Though they left Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City Saturday night with different results, both future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins and heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell made statements that their careers are going strong and continuing after delivering compelling performances to a packed house in New Jersey and to homes across the country on HBO World Championship Boxing®.

In the main event, "The Executioner" may have come up on the short end of a 12-round majority decision to Chad Dawson, but without question, Hopkins' performance in the closely-contested bout showed that even at 47, there is plenty of fight left in the fighting pride of Philadelphia.

Dawson praised Hopkins at the post-fight press conference for his skill and guile in the ring and exclaimed, "He can still beat anyone else in our division."

While the longtime middleweight king made history for becoming the oldest man to ever a win a major boxing title when he defeated Jean Pascal in 2011, now Hopkins has his sights on besting his own record by winning yet another title later in 2012.

"I fought hard Saturday night and feel the fight was closer than two of the scores reflected," said Hopkins. "Regardless of the result, I will continue my career and challenge any champion in my division. I might be older, but I don't feel a decline in my skills or abilities in the ring. I love to fight and am still competing at a level where boxing cannot deny me the opportunity to succeed."

Kicking off the HBO World Championship Boxing telecast in style was unbeaten Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell, who may have singlehandedly renewed boxing fans' faith in the heavyweight division with his thrilling third round technical knockout win over of Chazz Witherspoon.

Showing off a warrior's heart and huge chin in the first round when he survived Witherspoon's initial attack despite being momentarily dazed, the 29-year old Mitchell kept his composure and rallied in the second round with a punishing body attack. That tactic eventually opened Witherspoon up for a massive left hook to the jaw in the third round that sent him to the canvas. Mitchell then finished the job with a series of powerful shots that forced referee Randy Neumann to stop the bout at the 2:31 mark, giving Mitchell the official title of NABO heavyweight champion and the unofficial crown of America's next great heavyweight. Expect the soft-spoken but heavy-handed Mitchell to wear both titles proudly on his quest to win the heavyweight world championship.

"Every experience I have in the ring allows me to improve my learning curve in the sport as I continue to climb the heavyweight division," said Mitchell. "I know I have the heart, which the fans saw Saturday night. I am very proud of my victory over Chazz and look forward to my next challenge. There is only one dream for me and that is to be the bona fide heavyweight champion of the world."

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tony Thompson July 7th in Switzerland

40-year-old Tony Thompson (36-2, 24 KO’s) thinks he’s got the skills to beat IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (57-3, 50 KO’s) in their rematch on July 7th in Switzerland. Thomson failed miserably last time he fought Wladimir four years ago in an 11th round TKO in Hamburg, Germany in 2008. Now four years older, and even slower than he was then, Thompson thinks he can get a knockout this time.

Thompson said to fightnews.com “Last time I had an injury…I will complete what I missed four years ago. I will knock Klitschko out and take all his belts to the U.S.”

It sounds like a hopeless pipe dream on Thompson’s part. He did have a knee injury for that fight, but he was going to lose anyway because his shots lacked power and speed and he was eating solid right hands from Wladimir round one. By the 11th, Thompson looked groggy from all the right hands he’d eaten. In the rematch, I see it much the same way but with a lot more clinching and leaning by Wladimir. I hope Thompson’s previously injured knee is in good shape because he’s going to have Wladimir leaning all his weight on him for at least 10 clinches per round. Thompson will wear down quickly with Wladimir leaning on him, and we should see a KO by the 4th or 5th round.

This mismatch is pretty much identical to Wladimir’s recent fight against another 40-year-old Jean Marc Mormeck, who Wladimir stopped in the 4th last month. Wladimir is facing a lot older fighters now and they talk a good fight, but they lack the physical skills, talent and youth to beat him. If Thompson couldn’t hang with Wladimir four years ago when Thompson was 36, he certainly won’t be able to now that he’s 40.

Granted, Thompson has won his last five fights since then but they’ve all been against 2nd tier opposition. There have been no risky fights for Thompson, and it’s quite sad that he’s being as Wladimir’s IBF mandatory off of a win over journeyman Maurice Harris and four other 2nd tier fighters. Thompson at least should have to beat someone like Denis Boytsov to get another title shot rather than getting a another crack after five easy fights

CUNNINGHAM – TARVER: A Social Media Experiment

After many months of disregarding and downplaying a potential bout with former two-time IBF Cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, former Light Heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver has finally stepped up to the plate, well sort of.

For the past several months, Cunningham & Tarver have been going back in forth on twitter but whenever the prospect of a fight gets brought up, Tarver has had one excuse after another and then Tarver took a June 2nd fight with little known Lateef Kayode.

Well finally Tarver, has acknowledged that a fight with Cunningham would be a meaningful one and has said a fight with Cunningham could happen if Cunningham could get support of the fans to tune in by garnering 20,000 twitter followers.

Team Cunningham decided to step up to the challenge and has launched a twitter campaign titled, "Can Twitter Make A Fight?- @USSvsMagicMan". This social media experiment will see if twitter is a powerful enough tool to get this fight made with the support of 20,000 boxing fans. The team acknowledges that this is a tall order given the lack of attention the cruiserweight division gets in the states, but they feel that if fans want to see a good fight, this should not matter.

When asked about the prospect of this fight happening, Cunningham said, "This is a fight I have wanted for the longest and Tarver has made up many excuses to not make it happen. I was honestly ready to move on from the idea, but he made the challenge and me and my team are crazy enough to call him on it. Following @USSvsMagicMan is not about being a fan of mine or Tarver's it's about being a fan of boxing and wanting to see a good fight and taking action to get it made".

Boxing fans are now asked to simply follow @USSvsMagicMan and when the number soars to the magic number of 20,000 then this important fight can and will happen.

Ultra-popular around the world for his fierce fighting style in the ring and his gentlemanly nature outside of it, Librado Andrade (30-4, 23 KO's) has long been a top super middleweight contender, with exciting fights against Lucian Bute, Robert Stieglitz, Mikkel Kessler, Yusaf Mack and Eric Lucas to prove it. In search of his first world title, the 33-year-old from La Habra, California by way of Jesus del Monte, Guanajuato, Mexico is coming off of a third round technical knockout over Matt O'Brien for the WBC Continental Americas belt in August of 2011.

Looking to derail Andrade's march towards a world championship is 32-year-old Florida native Rowland Bryant (15-1, 10 KO's). A nine-year professional who knows the time is now to make his move, the hard-hitting Bryant has everything to gain with a win over the well-respected Andrade on April 21.

One of the newest additions to the Golden Boy Promotions roster, Mexico City's Francisco Vargas (9-0-1, 7 KO's) will battle Irvington, New Jersey's Rafael Lora (11-7, 5 KO's) in an eight-round junior lightweight fight. A 2008 Olympian for Mexico, the 27-year-old Vargas has knocked out his last six opponents, making him a tough hill to climb for any opponent.

Nicknamed "The Dominican Man," 26-year-old Lora proudly represents his native Dominican Republic and with four first round knockouts on his record, one punch from him can change the direction of a fight immediately. A fearless battler who will take on all comers, Lora's last six opponents, including World Champion Adrien Broner, had a combined 85-2 record.

A highly accomplished amateur with multiple titles and nearly 100 wins to his name, Chris "Sweet" Pearson (6-0, 3 KO's) has started to take the professional game by storm with his incredible talent and exciting style. Just 21 years old, Pearson has scored two first round knockouts thus far in his young career and will jump right back into the ring for his third fight of 2012 in a four/six round junior middleweight fight against Phoenix's Jose Martell (2-1-1, 2 KO's).

23-year-old Luis Ramos Jr. (21-0, 9 KO's) is well on his way to big things in the lightweight division as proven by his recent three-fight string of wins over Francisco Lorenzo (W8), David Rodela (KO5) and Raymundo Beltran (W10). Ramos will face an opponent to be named in a 10-round fight.

El Paso's favorite fighting son Antonio Escalante (25-4, 17 KO's) is 8-0 in his adopted hometown and the Juarez native has no intentions of seeing that run end on April 21. Escalante scored knockouts over Pipino Cuevas Jr. and Rynell Griffin in 2011 and the former NABO super bantamweight champion will be looking to make a statement at 130 pounds when he takes on Matamoros, Mexico's Francisco Camacho (10-1, 3 KO's) in an eight-round matchup.

What the fighters had to say on Thursday:

JERMAIN TAYLOR:

“I just want to say thank you to my team. I'm back in love with boxing. I can't say it any other way. After losing in Berlin, I took two years off. They were the best two years of my life, because I’m hungry again.

“I've been boxing since I was 11 and I never took a break. Never. When I lost those fights, it was time for me to take a break. I spent time with my family and for the first time in a long time, I missed boxing. Now, I'm back. I feel strong. I took care of business in December and I'm going take care of business tomorrow.

“I love this sport because I'm a fighter. And this is the only sport where you can lose, get knocked out, look bad and then fight your way back to the top. You can get down real low and you can still come back and be on top. I'm on my way back.”

CALEB TRUAX:

“I've prepared for the man that beat Bernard Hopkins but we'll see where Jermain's at tomorrow. I think he might be on the decline but that's not who I prepared for so I'm ready.

“This is where I wanted to be with my career, in a big fight. Being from Minnesota, I don't get all the opportunities to fight in California and New York or other big places. This is the biggest opportunity of my life and I plan to take advantage of it. Everything went well in my preparations. All I have to do is go in there tomorrow and get the job done.”

ERISLANDY LARA:

“I'm part of the A class of my division. A lot of guys don't want to fight me so I have to thank Ronald Hearns for taking this fight.

“I'm going by the name of "The Punisher" for this fight because people saw that I punished Paul Williams. I'm ready to fight another great fight.”

RONALD HEARNS:

“I'm grateful for my fight tomorrow. Thanks to my team, Lou DiBella and SHOWTIME. This is the opportunity of a lifetime and I can't wait for the world to see me perform. It's time to get to work.”

LOU DiBELLA, Promoter:

“The Beau Rivage is our southern home away from home. It's truly the jewel casino of the South. Thanks to SHOWTIME and Stephen Espinoza for putting on this great card. It should be a tremendous night of boxing.

“Jermain is not an ordinary fighter. This is a man who was a pound-for-pounder, one of the few men to hold all four middleweight belts at one time and the only man to beat Bernard Hopkins twice. And this is a new beginning. It's not usual for you to see a guy like him fight in a 1,400-seat venue. But this is a comeback done the right way. It's not a cash out. He is looking to the future by looking into the past and remembering what got him to the top.”

PAT BURNS, Taylor's trainer:

“Jermain has made a new commitment to boxing and life. We're fighting a heck of a tough kid because that's how you pave a comeback. You can't fight guys from the graveyard. Caleb knows his life will change if he wins. It will change his financial situation so he's hungry.”
