No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on Mayweather-Canelo

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell, who is also co-editor of The Boxing Standard (http://boxingstandard.com).
Our main subject was what is expected to be the biggest fight this year, and perhaps the biggest grossing pay-per-view of all time, the September 14 showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
In this bout between these two unbeaten fighters, the 36-year-old pound-for-pound king Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) faces the 23-year-old WBA and WBC 154-pound champion Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) at a catch weight of 152 pounds. It takes place Saturday, September 14, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime pay-per-view, in the U.K. on BoxNation, in Mexico on Televisa, and also on many networks around the world. The event is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions, and Canelo Promotions.
We spoke with Charles Farrell Thursday to preview this fight.
Mayweather is the favorite to win this fight, and we both agreed with that assessment.
"I do think it should be a pretty decisive win for Mayweather," said Charles Farrell. "Aside from some difference in size -- Canelo is a bigger guy and he's a growing guy -- I don't see that Mayweather doesn't have every appreciable advantage. There's nothing that Canelo does that he hasn't seen many, many times before." He added that he expects the likeliest outcome to be a comfortable 12-round decision for Mayweather.
However, this being boxing, we also discussed the possibility, as some others have as well, that Mayweather would win the fight but would lose the decision. Robberies and horribly bad decisions are common in boxing, so we discussed the business considerations behind such a possibility, including Canelo's popularity and potential longevity as a star.
We also discussed the many prominent boxing writers "who don't know anything about boxing", as well as some comments on the compelling co-feature on this show, where WBA and WBC 140-pound champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KOs) takes on slugger Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KOs).
In addition, we play a brief excerpt from the media conference calls for this fight, one with Canelo and another with Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions.
No Holds Barred is also available on mobile phones and iPads through Stitcher (http://landing.stitcher.com/?vurl=noholdsbarred).
Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

Cushman & Wakefield Theater is an intimate theater within Barclays Center. The theater can accommodate 3,500-6,000 seats and is ideal for theatrical performances, concert artists, music festivals, boxing events and comedy acts.

"Brooklyn has become our second home, so it's only fitting that we come back to help celebrate Barclays Center's first anniversary with a stacked card," said Oscar De La Hoya president of Golden Boy Promotions. "The recently signed Sadam Ali is a perfect headliner, as he is a Brooklyn native and unbeaten former Olympian. Plus we have Michael Perez vs. Carlos Molina in an explosive matchup between two fighters hungry for a big win."

"As we head into year two, Barclays Center has established itself as the home for major boxing on the East Coast," said Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center. "We are looking forward to welcoming Brooklyn's own Sadam Ali and are thrilled to team with Golden Boy Promotions for another great night of boxing at Barclays Center."

"There's no place like home," said Brooklyn fighter Sadam Ali. "I've seen some great fights at Barclays Center and I have waited for my name to be called to fight here. Now that day has come and I couldn't be more excited. This is going to be a performance and a win you won't forget."

"Sadam Ali's a great talent with a bright future, but I've been waiting years for an opportunity like this and I can't let it slide," said Jay Krupp. "I've been a fighter my whole life and that's what this is going to be on September 30, a fight."

A decorated amateur boxer who was a Junior Olympic, PAL and Under-19 National Champion, as well as a two-time New York Golden Gloves Champion, 24-year-old
Sadam "World Kid" Ali (16-0, 10 KO's) reached the pinnacle of the amateur game in 2008 when he represented the United States in the Beijing Games. In January of 2009, "World Kid", who is of Yemen descent, turned professional with a first round technical knockout over Ricky Thompson. Ali has gone on to become a popular fighter in the New York and New Jersey area putting together win after win against increasingly tougher opposition. In his most recent fight on October 27, he knocked out Ronnie Warrior Jr. in the second round.

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana now making his home in Catskill, New York,
"Smokin" Jay Krupp (17-5, 8 KO's) is a nine-year pro who gained notoriety for being trained by the man who brought Mike Tyson to prominence, Kevin Rooney. Winner of three straight fights, the 30-year-old Krupp most recently won a hard fought eight-round unanimous decision over Milton Ramos on June 21.

Newark's Michael "The Artist" Perez (18-1-2, 10 KO's) is a gritty 23-year-old fighter who will do whatever it takes to get the win. In 2010, Perez left his mark as a prospect to watch with his eight-round win over Jose Hernandez, a bout that was a definite "Fight of the Year" candidate. Since then, Perez is unbeaten in five of his last six bouts with the only loss to recently crowned World Champion Omar Figueroa Jr. and a technical draw with Lonnie Smith due to a cut from a clash of heads. Unbeaten in New York, Perez hopes to keep the streak going on September 30 in front of his local fans.

A product of the ultra-competitive Southern California boxing scene, where the battles in the gym are as intense as the ones on fight night, Carlos Molina (17-1-1, 7 KO's) has emerged as a top prospect ready to take his game to the next level. Coming off of a tough 10-round meeting with former Unified World Champion Amir Khan last December, the 27-year-old Molina is eager to get back in the ring in his comfortable weight class of 135 pounds and show off the crisp counterpunching form that has led him to 17 victories thus far in his professional career.

Unbeaten as a professional, Staten Island's "Sir" Marcus Browne (6-0, 6 KO's) has made a seamless adjustment from the amateurs (where he represented the United States in the 2012 Olympics) to the pros. Fresh from a knockout victory over Robert Hill on the first Golden Boy Live! card on August 19, the 22-year-old will take a big step up against Engel on September 30. This will be Browne's fourth time fighting in his adopted home at Barclays Center.

St. Louis' Kevin "Hitman" Engel (20-8, 16 KO's) is a hard-hitting veteran ready to push Browne to the limit. Having been in the ring with Anthony Dirrell, Thomas Williams Jr., Edwin Rodriguez and Dallas Vargas, the 33-year-old has the experience and power to make it a rough night for the highly-touted Browne in Brooklyn.

R&R Promotions and Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati to present first ever boxing event at an Ohio casino Sept. 7

R&R Promotions, in conjunction with the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati, looks to make history Sept. 7 when they bring boxing back to Cincinnati with the first ever event to be held at an Ohio casino. "Fight Night at The Shoe," to be held at The Shoe at the Horseshoe Casino, will feature 10 bouts in total with lightweight Brandon "Untouchable" Bennett in the main event. The co-main event will showcase Aaron Pryor Jr., the son of newly crowned pro boxing Hall of Famer Aaron Pryor Sr. Pryor Sr. will be in attendance at the event, along with three-time world champion Adrien Broner and special invited guest former two-time champion Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns, as he looks to support his son Ronald Hearns who is also featured on the undercard.

The top talent in the Queen City will be appearing on the undercard including heavyweights David Long and Danny Calhoun. Welterweight William "Action" Jackson (10-1-1, 5 KOs) and junior lightweight DeVonte Allen (5-1-1, 3 KOs) will also be fighting in separate bouts. Rounding out the card are undefeated prospects Mel Crossty (5-0-1, 1 KO), former U.S. Marine Jonathan Steele (1-0, 1 KO), and 2008 U.S. Olympian Raynell Williams (1-0, 1 KO).

Bennett is currently working his way towards a title opportunity. At 16-1, the 5-foot-6 southpaw could use a win on the seventh to propel him towards that next step. Pryor Jr., 17-7 (12 KOs), is coming off of a scintillating second round knockout July 5 against Mickey Scarborough, and will be looking to continue that momentum.

"I am very excited to be involved with the first boxing show ever at any casino in the State of Ohio," said Andrew Williams, CEO of R&R Promotions. "It has been a pleasure to work with VP Kevin Kline and his great team at the Horseshoe Casino to make this dream a reality."

STATEMENT FROM “FAST” EDDIE CHAMBERS

This is an open letter to the fans who support me as well to those who don’t.
First off, I want to congratulate my opponent Thibiso Mchunu of South Africa for his victory against me.  I do not want to in any form or fashion diminish that win by making excuses about my performance in the ring.  I did my best that I could to make the fight.  To win the fight.  Losing this decision woke up my spirit to compete again and I will continue to pursue my career as a Cruiserweight.
I felt fine throughout the bout.  The weight loss was not a factor in my performance.  I did not expect Mchunu to fight such a defensive, awkward fight.  I was trying to follow instructions from my trainer, James Ali Bashir.  It was very difficult to do as I am a counter puncher as well who was forced into being the aggressor.  I felt that if I did not doing something to make the fight, there would have been no action during the fight.  I am not that kinda guy who is going to lay around crying over spilled milk.

I want to get right back in there the way the old-school warriors used to do many years ago.  I take full responsibility for this critical setback in my career.  My incentive is back and hopefully I will be able to meet Mchunu down the road and there will be a far a different result.
I look forward to meeting the top Cruiserweights in the world.  I think my biggest enemy is inactivity.  I have fought just three times in the last three years.  I want to get busy as soon as possible.  I will show the world that I am a long way from being done.

Sincerely
“Fast” Eddie Chambers

Phil Jackson Benson vs. Scott "Cujo" Sigmon headline Keystone Boxing Event live from Rosecroft Raceways Saturday, September 7

Rosecroft Raceway is once again becoming a hot spot for the Beltway Boxing area. Keystone Boxing has made Rosecroft there location for the past couple of professional boxing shows that they have put on this year. This Saturday, September 7 it will be once again a packed house at Rosecroft Raceways. The venue is a boxing fans dream. It puts the fans up close and personal with all the action going on inside the ring. The card for this Saturday is featuring an exciting main event.  Landover, MD's Phil Jackson Benson (12-1, 11 KO's) taking on Scott "Cujo" Sigmon (23-4, 12 KO's) of Lynchburg, VA for the vacant WBC USNBC super middleweight title.

It will be a fantastic co-main event featuring Forestville, MD's 6' 5" Alantez "SLYAZA" Fox aka "The Jr. Middleweight Giant" (11-0-1, 4 KO's) up against Centreville, VA's 6' 2" Zain Shah ( 5-1, 3 KO's)

Also on the card you will be able to see Waldorf, MD's Mike "Yes Indeed" Reed ( 4-0, 3 KO's) in his first 6 round bout as he takes on Ramesis Gil (8-6-5, 5 KO's) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

2012 National Golden Gloves Champion Mike Reed (4-0, 3 KOs) wrapped up a busy training camp with stablemate Seth Mitchell as they prepared for the biggest fights of their respective careers. Mitchell will battle Chris Arreola on Showtime while Reed steps up to his first 6-rounder against stiff competition in the form of Ramesis Gil. Gil's record (8-6-5, 5 KOs) is deceiving, considering his dubious M.O. of going into opposition's hometowns looking wins. The fight against Reed will mark Gil's tenth straight bout against an undefeated opponent.

Keystone Boxing has put together a great card leading up to the three last bouts
4 Rounds
Light Heavyweight
Eric Govan  vs  Jess Noriega

4 Rounds
Junior Featherweight
Marcus "KO" Bates  vs  Johnny Portillo

4 Rounds

SHAWN PORTER VS. JULIO DIAZ II TO HEADLINE "THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO" FIGHT WEEK CARD ON THURSDAY, SEPT. 12 AT MGM GRAND HOTEL & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS LIVE ON FOX SPORTS 2 & FOX DEPORTES

It's boxing's biggest week, an opportunity for the stars of entertainment and sports to descend on Las Vegas for "THE" fight of 2013, the championship showdown between unbeaten icons Floyd "Money" Mayweather
and Canelo Alvarez.  However, before the world turns its eyes to the MGM Grand Garden Arena to watch these two warriors collide Saturday, Sept. 14, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions kick off festivities two days earlier, on Thursday, Sept. 12, with a special three-and-a-half hour, action-packed broadcast on FOX Sports 2 and FOX Deportes from MGM Grand Las Vegas' Premier Ballroom.
It's the rematch fight fans have demanded, as unbeaten Shawn "Showtime" Porter faces former World Champion Julio "The Kidd" Diaz in the 10-round welterweight bout as the main event of the tripleheader.  The co-featured bout showcases Las Vegas up and comer Badou Jack as he takes on Mexico's Marco Antonio Periban and in the opener boxing's top prospects Julian "J-Rock" Williams faces Hugo "The Boss" Centeno Jr. in a 10-round junior middleweight clash.
Porter vs. Diaz II will take place on Thursday, September 12 at MGM Grand Las Vegas' Premier Ballroom located in the MGM Grand Conference Center on the third level.  The event is presented by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and O'Reilly Auto Parts.  Doors open at 5:00 p.m. PT on fight night and the first bell rings at 6:00 p.m. PT.  The FOX Sports 2/FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.
Additionally, with the purchase of a ticket, fans will be given a reserved seat for the "THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo" Official Weigh-In taking place Friday, September 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  Fans will also receive a 10 percent discount on tickets for closed circuit viewing of the Mayweather vs. Canelo mega-event on Saturday, September 14.
"Two days before boxing's biggest night, this is the kind of event that will get things started off in the right way," said Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe. "There are three exciting and evenly matched fights on this card that will give fans another opportunity to enjoy an exciting night of boxing while they anticipate the outcome of who "The One" will be in Mayweather vs. Canelo."
"This is the perfect way to kick off the festivities for Mayweather vs. Canelo and I know all boxing fans will love this card," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.  "Shawn Porter vs. Julio Diaz is a rematch the fighters and the fans demanded and as good as their first fight was, I think this one will be even better. In addition, we've got Marco Antonio Periban facing Badou Jack in an important super middleweight bout with title implications and there will definitely be fireworks between two of the sport's top prospects, Hugo Centeno Jr. and Julian Williams."
"Getting a full card of quality fights on FOX Sports 2 and FOX Deportes, tapping into the energy being created by the Mayweather vs. Canelo bout later in the week, is a strong offering," said FOX Sports SVP Programming & Research Patrick Crakes.  "We will continue to work with our partners at Golden Boy Promotions to put together packages for fight fans across the country."
"When I was approached with this rematch, there was no question in my mind about taking it," Porter said.  "We had a great fight the first time, but this time around I want a knockout. I'm looking to make a statement on September 12 and I will."
"I think I won the first fight and I'm not the only one who feels that way," Diaz said. "But I give Porter credit for agreeing to this rematch so we can settle things.  He's a good fighter, but on September 12, I'm going to prove that I'm better."
"Marco Antonio Periban is one of the top super middleweights in the world, and I respect him for his accomplishments," said Jack.  "This is the big fight I've wanted though, and I won't let this opportunity pass me by because when I win, I'll be one step closer to becoming a world champion."
"I believe I should be the super middleweight champion right now, but this is boxing," Periban said.  "So to get back to a title fight, I have to make sure I leave no doubts in my fights."  "Badou Jack is a good fighter with a bright future, but he's in my way and I have to remove him on September 12."
"This is the kind of fight that boxing needs, two undefeated fighters putting it all on the line and having the confidence to back up their talent," said Williams.  "Centeno's a tough guy and I know he's going to bring it on September 12, but I have more tools than he does and more ways to win and he's going to find that out once we're in the ring."
"I'm really excited about this fight and this event, because the world is going to be watching," Centeno Jr. said.  "We're both unbeaten and rising up the ladder, and this fight will prove who's going to keep going forward. I expect it to be me."
On December 15, 2012, Akron, Ohio's Shawn "Showtime" Porter (21-0-1, 14 KO's) looked to add the name of former World Champion Julio Diaz (40-8-1, 29 KO's) to his list of accomplishments, but the veteran from Coachella had other plans and the two went to battle for 10 exciting rounds before a draw verdict was rendered.  Since then, the 25-year-old Porter scored a dominant win over previously unbeaten Phil LoGreco and the 33-year-old Diaz gave Amir Khan all he could handle before losing a close decision, setting up the rematch the fighters and the fans wanted.
Coachella's Julio "The Kidd" Diaz (40-8-1, 29 KO's) may have initially made his mark in the lightweight division, where he won the IBF World Championship twice and defeated fighters like Javier Jauregui, Jesus Chavez and Ricky Quiles, but it appears that at welterweight, Diaz is even more dangerous.  After a yearlong layoff, Diaz is winner of two fights by knockout with the only blemishes coming in controversial bouts against Amir Khan and Shawn Porter.  Now, he looks to avenge his draw with Porter by defeating his unbeaten foe on September 12.
A 2008 Olympian for Gambia, Swedish-born Las Vegas resident Badou "The Ripper" Jack(15-0, 10 KO's) has become an international boxing sensation in recent years and the 29-year-old is just approaching his fighting prime.  A pro since 2009, Jack scored a third round knockout over Michael Gbenga on the undercard of his promoter Floyd Mayweather's fight against Robert Guerrero.  After his July 19 victory against Farah Ennis, "The Ripper" is looking for another quick finish on September 12.
Mexico City's Marco Antonio Periban (20-1, 13 KO's) looks to bounce back from his controversial majority decision loss to Sakio Bika in their June battle for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Title by taking on undefeated young warrior Jack in a 10-round clash at 168 pounds.  The 28-year-old Periban is a crowd-pleasing battler who can do it all in the ring.
Opening the night of fights will be a rare meeting of undefeated top junior middleweight talents is another proud graduate of Philadelphia boxing's School of Hard Knocks, 23-year-old Julian "J-Rock" Williams (13-0-1, 7 KO's).  Having already faced a stellar level of competition thus far in his career, Williams stepped up even more in June when he faced former World Champion Joachim Alcine, dropping him three times en route to a unanimous decision victory.  On September 12, he meets fellow unbeaten Hugo Centeno Jr.
Oxnard, California's Hugo Centeno Jr. (19-0, 10 KO's) has spent time making his name known among 154-rising stars, with the 22-year-old scoring a near shutout of fellow prospect KeAndrae Leatherwood in March.  Now Centeno Jr. has the opportunity to make his record 20-0 when he faces Julian Williams on September 12.
"THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO," a 12-round fight for Canelo's WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Championships and Mayweather's WBA Super Welterweight Super World Championship taking place Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona, O'Reilly Auto Parts, AT&T, Valvoline, Mexico Tourism, Fred Loya Insurance and Nature Nutrition.  In the 12-round co-featured attraction, WBC, WBA Super and Ring Magazine Super Lightweight World Champion Danny Garcia and thunderous puncher WBC Interim Super Lightweight World Champion Lucas Matthysse square off in a fight presented in association with Swift Promotions and Arano Box Promotions.  Also, Ishe Smith vs. Carlos Molina square off in a 12-round battle for Smith's IBF Junior Middleweight World Title which is promoted in association with Warriors Boxing.  The opening bout on SHOWTIME PPV features a 10-round welterweight showdown between Pablo Cesar Cano and Ashley Theophane.  The mega-event will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.  The event can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming (SAP).

"SUPERMAN RETURNS" ADONIS STEVENSON VS. TAVORIS CLOUD; WBC WORLD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP September 28, live on HBO in U.S. from the Bell Centre in Montreal

World Boxing Council (WBC), The Ring Magazine and linear world light heavyweight champion, Adonis "Superman" Stevenson (21-1-0, 18 KOs), will defend his crown for the first time, facing former International Boxing Federation (IBF) world light heavyweight champion, American Tavoris "Thunder" Cloud (24-1-0, 19 KOs), on Saturday, September 28 in a titanic collision at the Bell Centre in Montreal, airing live on HBO in the United States.
"Superman Returns" will be co-promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), Don King Productions (DKP) and Gary Shaw Productions (GSP), in association with Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron.
This prestigious boxing event launches the start of the new GYM season, which promises to be more exciting and glamorous than ever.
Stevenson, who turns 36 on September 22 and now lives in Blainville, won his world light heavyweight title by knocking out undisputed light heavyweight king "Bad" Chad Dawson (31-3-0, 17 KOs) in 76 seconds. His dramatic victory before a stunned audience at Bell Centre and HBO viewers was amazing as "Superman" immediately catapulted into the stratosphere of elite international boxing stars. Stevenson was the IBF super middleweight mandatory challenger but IBF Carl Froch wasn't interested in battling the dangerous southpaw Stevenson. Instead, Stevenson gained instant fame and a privileged place among boxing's greats. The Bible of Boxing, The Ring Magazine, selected him as its Fighter of the Month for June, as the WBC also did.
"Adonis Stevenson" goal is not to become just a world champion," GYM president Yvon Michel said on the eve of Stevenon's fight against Dawson. "Adonis Stevenson has the required potential to become a major international attraction in professional boxing, but to get there he needed the stage offered him in the June 8 fight of June 8: a seasoned and dangerous opponent, world title, and prestigious television. The table is set; the future is now in his fists of steel! This prediction is now being achieved!"
Back on June 8, 2012, Stevenson's late, great trainer Emanuel Steward had prophesied, "Adonis will become an authentic, major star in boxing." His presence in the life of Stevenson was short, like a shooting star, but the mark he left is indelible. His head trainer is now Stewart's nephew, Javan "Sugar" Hill, who can now say their mission has been partially accomplished. Knowing that there is often a small margin between victory and defeat, Hill once again because the recipe works has brought back Stevenson to training camp on the reclusive borders of Michigan in Traverse City.
The powerful Stevenson is riding a streak of eight sensational knockout victories including Dawson (KO1), Darnell Boone (KO6), Don George (TKO12) Noe Gonzalez (TKO2) Jesus Gonzales (KO1), Aaron Pryor Jr. (TKO9), Shujaa El Amin (TKO1) and Derek Edwards (KO3). In fact, the last time a fight Stevenson went the limit dates back to 2007.
The 31-year Cloud, fighting out of Tallahassee Florida, has had an illustrious nine-year pro career, highlighted by his 4 years reign as IBF world champion. He won his title in 2009 winning a decision over former world champion Clinton Woods (42-4-1, 25 KOs). He then defended it four times, first against durable Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KOs), another former world champion, following against contenders Fulgencio Zuniga (24-4-1, 21 KOs), Yusaf Mack (29-3-2, 17 KOs) and Gabriel Campillo (21-3-1, 8 KOs). His winning streak ended at 24, the same time as his reign as champion concluded last March in New York, losing by decision to the inimitable Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KOs).
According to The Ring Magazine, Cloud is ranked fourth among the world's leading light heavyweights, and he is considered the No. 1 175-pound light heavyweight contender in the United States. Cloud has suffered only the one defeat in his entire career and he has never visited the canvas. Cloud has an experience advantage over newly crowned champ Stevenson having fought a total of 123 rounds, including 78 in world championships, nearly as Stevenson's total of 80 rounds fought. Cloud believes he has what it takes to become world champion again because of his proven track record combined with his aggressive style and power. This major challenge has Stevenson chomping at the bit to make his mark. Since his resounding and expeditious victory over Dawson, HBO executives demonstrated a sustained interest in presenting the next fight for "Superman" on the air, provided it he agreed to face "Thunder" Cloud, considered by many as the most dangerous contenders in the division. They say in life you need to be careful about what you want because it might happen; Stevenson wanted strong opposition his first title defense, and that is what he has on Sept. 28.
Other fights on the Sept. 28 card will be announced in the next days and GYM is working hard to put together a memorable gala event.
Tickets will go on sale starting August 17 at the Bell Centre, online at www.evenko.ca, at GYM (514-383-0666) or club Boxing Champion (514 376-0980). Ticket prices range from $50 in the red up to $ 300 on the floor.

BELLATOR ANNOUNCES RAMPAGE VS. TITO PAY-PER-VIEW

It was announced live inside the Bellator cage tonight that two of the biggest names in MMA Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Tito “The People’s Champion” Ortiz will meet in a light heavyweight battle live on PPV Saturday, November 2nd. The announcement was made with both Rampage and Tito inside the Bellator cage to a nationally televised audience on Spike TV at Bellator 97 inside The Santa Ana Star Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Rampage vs. Tito” will be held at Southern California’s Long Beach Arena, with tickets on sale at 10 AM PST this Saturday, August 3rd. Tickets can be purchased on Bellator.com, Ticketmaster.com, as well as at the Long Beach Arena Box Office.

“To have two of the biggest names in MMA headline our first PPV is awesome,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Rampage vs. Tito is a fight I’ve wanted to see for years and to have it as our Main Event on our first Pay-Per-View is a spectacular next step in Bellator’s evolution. They’re both re-energized, excited and ready for a war. This will be a great fight.”

“Honestly, I feel like I’ve been re-born.,” Jackson said. “My excitement, energy and aggression, it’s all back and bigger than ever. I feel like a kid again. The Rampage you’ll see Nov. 2nd will be better than any Rampage you’ve ever seen. Everybody knows Tito and I have a very long history. He’s a former teammate and friend, and it’s one of the reasons I stayed away from the UFC as long as I did. But, I want to be very clear; any sort of friendship we once had doesn’t exist when that cage door shuts. I’ve got a ton to prove on November 2nd, and unfortunately for Tito he’s the guy I have to make an example of. He’s in my house now and Saturday, November 2nd on PPV, it’s going to be a horrible night for Tito Ortiz.”

“I’m back,” Ortiz stated. “Over the last few years, my passion for MMA was completely killed, dealing with UFC politics and with Dana. I didn’t have that drive to compete, my heart wasn’t in it. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I’m free. Bjorn and Bellator put together an opportunity that made me part of the promotion, part of the family. I feel like I can breathe again and my old friend is going to be on the receiving end of all that happiness turned into an old school Tito Ortiz ground and pound beating. I’ve fought and beaten the very best in MMA history and on Nov. 2nd, Rampage will be the next huge win on my record. This is a new era for the People’s Champion.”

Jackson arrived in Bellator in June as a former Pride and UFC champion, having last fought on Spike TV in September 2007, in a fight vs. Dan Henderson that drew nearly 6 million viewers, making it one of the most watched fights in the sport’s history. In 2009, Jackson served as a coach on Spike’s “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights,” the highest-rated season by far in franchise history, delivering over 3 million viewers per week. Rampage joins a Bellator Light Heavyweight division that features “King Mo”, Emanuel Newton, Vladimir Matyushenko, Attila Vegh and now, Tito Ortiz.

Ortiz joins Bellator as a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and throughout his career has been one of the most recognizable and polarizing figures during his sixteen year career, fighting the likes of Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans and Ken Shamrock. A true MMA icon, Ortiz will now start a new chapter of his career fighting under the Bellator banner beginning on November 2nd.

More information regarding Bellator’s first PPV will be made available in the coming weeks. A press conference with Rampage and Ortiz will take place on Monday, August 5th. Information regarding the press conference will be available shortly.
