BATTLE OF LIGHT HEAYWEIGHT CHAMPIONS; TARVER vs. DAWSON SET FOR OCTOBER 11 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING

NEW YORK– Building upon its tradition of delivering the most evenly matched and significant fights in boxing, SHOWTIME Senior Vice President and General Manager, Sports and Event Programming Ken Hershman officially announced today the fight that boxing pundits and fans have been waiting for. World champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (27-4, 19 KOs) and undefeated “Bad” Chad Dawson (26-0, 17 KOs) will face off in a battle of light heavyweight kingpins on Saturday, Oct. 11 live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

“There’s been a ground-swell of anticipation for this fight for more than a year,” said Hershman. “Two of the pound-for-pound best going toe-to-toe—this is what SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is all about. Tarver-Dawson is yet another example of SHOWTIME delivering on our promise to televise the most meaningful and competitive match-ups in the sport.”

Tarver, the former undisputed light heavyweight world champion, is the only man to stick two losses on the professional resume of future Hall of Famer Roy Jones, Jr.

After registering a definitive unanimous decision over the defending IBF 175-pound champion Clinton Woods on April 12 on SHOWTIME, Tarver is back on top of the deep light heavyweight division.

Dawson, of New Haven, Conn., is out to prove that he is the man to be at light heavyweight. A ShoBox alum with speed, coordination and power, Dawson is considered by most industry insiders to be the next star of the star-studded division.

“SHOWTIME has had the opportunity to present Chad Dawson on his rise from unknown prospect to world champion,” Hershman said. “Now he’ll face a legendary and highly confident fighter in Antonio Tarver, who may be fighting the best he ever has. It’s a compelling fight on many levels.”

On the same night Tarver was dethroning Woods, Dawson successfully defended his WBC title against the hard-hitting and aggressive Glen Johnson. Albeit a difficult fight for the young champion, Dawson won the unanimous decision and showed his mettle against a heavy-handed adversary.

After the fight, Tarver had some choice words for Dawson in front of a packed media center at the St. Pete Times Forum.

“Chad Dawson would be easy pickings now,’’ Tarver said. “He’s not the fighter now that he was before this fight (against Johnson). He’s a wounded duck.”

Tarver continued, “Dawson took a lot of hard punches against Johnson, but there is a difference between getting hit by Glen Johnson and getting hit by me.

Dawson had this to say: “Johnson is a warrior and we trained for that,’’ Dawson said after winning by scores of 116-112 on all the scorecards. “Glen is a great fighter. But I did my job and now it’s time to move on and fight the big names and the best fighters.

Upon agreeing to the Tarver fight, a clearly agitated Dawson added: “It’s about time he stepped up to the plate. He has finally stopped making excuses and it’s time we settle this. After this fight, I’m going to perform my own trick – I’m going to make the Magic Man disappear.”

“Just like Roy Jones, Glen Johnson, Montell Griffin and Reggie Johnson, Dawson is going to become another world champion with a big ‘L’ on his record from me!,” Tarver said.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Steve Albert and Al Bernstein will call the action from ringside with Jim Gray serving as roving reporter and Karyn Bryant as special correspondent. The executive producer of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is David Dinkins, Jr. with Bob Dunphy directing.

McCloskey desperate for title action

Paul McCloskey is hoping that an impressive win over English Champion Nigel Wright on the Ladbrokes.com Fight Night at the University Arena in Limerick on July 19th will land him the title shot which he desperately craves”.The County Derry stylist is unbeaten in 16 pro fights and he says he’s ready for a title shot be that on the British, European or World stage.“I feel I’m ready for anyone right now,” said the Dungiven native. “I’m 28 so I don’t have any time to waste and I’d jump at the chance of fighting for a major title.”McCloskey has watched with interest some of the major moves in the light welterweight division recently and he hopes to join the movers and shakers with a win over Wright.

“Things are changing all the time, the WBC, WBA, WBO titles have all changed hands recently as has the European title. I’d love a crack at any one of those guys. Ricky Hatton is still the top man in the division and that would be a dream fight for me. I was over in Manchester sparring his brother Matthew before his last fight and Ricky was training for the Lazcano fight. I would have loved the chance to spar Ricky as well but with me being a southpaw and Lazcano being orthodox it wasn’t really an option.”

Speaking of southpaws McCloskey has also been keeping a close eye on fellow portsider and British champion David Barnes who retained his title last weekend courtesy of a points win over former champ Barry Morrison.

“It wasn’t the greatest of fights to be honest but Barnes did what he had to do. Morrison just didn’t seem to have a plan B and you can be assured if I got a crack at Barnes I’d have plenty of plans up my sleeve. He’s a good, solid fighter but I’d be very confident of beating him. He likes to fight at his own pace so I don’t think he likes to be put under pressure.”

In fact McCloskey believes there are a lot of similarities between Barnes and his opponent in Limerick, Nigel Wright. “Well the obvious one is that they are both southpaw but I think they have similar styles as well. Nigel has a tendency to fade in the middle rounds so again I think that putting pressure on him from the start might be the best way to fight him.

He is a pretty fast starter himself though but I think I’ll surprise him because I’ll be quick out of the blocks as well.”

As well as working hard with trainer John Breen McCloskey has also spent time with Ricky Hatton’s conditioning coach and nutritionist Kerry Kayes.

“I had a few good conversations with Kerry when I was in Manchester and since then he’s been over to Belfast to speak with me and the rest of the lads at John’s gym. I’ve always been very interested in that side of the sport and it’s something I’ve always taken seriously so it was great to get some input from Kerry as well.”

McCloskey ha brought in Ugandan puncher Badru Lusambya for some intensive sparring ahead of his July 19th date in Limerick and he says preparations could not have gone better. “Lusambya’s been giving me some good work. He’s unbeaten in 18 fights and has 16 KO’s so he’s pretty ambitious himself. I get great sparring in the gym as it is with the likes of Neil Sinclair, Stephen Haughian, Jim Rock and Jason McKay but you need new guys as well to freshen things up. At this level you can’t afford to cut any corners in your preparations and this fight with Wright really is a very important one for me.”

McCloskey admits to being puzzled at recently being named “the most protected fighter at light welterweight” by the Ring magazine but he says he’s not unduly bothered.

“At the end of the day what’s written on a piece on paper doesn’t matter, it’s what you achieve in your career. I know people will look at my last few fights and say that they’ve been too easy but that’s because I’ve made them look easy.

“That’s my style of fighting and I think it demoralised some of these guys. Garnica had been robbed against Juan Lazcano not long before fighting me and of course he went on to fight Ricky Hatton recently. Bazan was a former World Champion and believe me has was still a tough, tough guy.

“Since fighting me both Bazan and Garnica have gone on to record wins and Bazan is scheduled to fight on the Cotto – Margarito undercard in a couple of weeks time. People have said that they were finished but I think that’s because I made them look finished so sometimes you can be a victim of your own success. I know though that if I get the opportunity I’ll prove I belong at the highest level.”

McCloskey’s ten round bout with Wright is the chief support to the clash between Andy Lee and Willie “The Gladiator” Gibbs on the Ladbrokes.com Fight Night at the University Arena in Limerick on July 19th.

The 8 bout card also features welterweight prospect Stephen Haughian from Lurgan, Galway’s John O’Donnell, former Lee opponent, Jason McKay, Castlebar puncher Keith Cresham, Limerick’s own Jamie Power and the pro debut of Canadian – Irishman Logan McGuinness.

Tickets for the Ladbrokes.com Fight Night priced from €60 are available from Ticketmaster.ie, and all usual outlets.

ROSA CLEMENTE ACCEPTS INVITATION TO RUN WITH CYNTHIA MCKINNEY/GREEN PARTY‏

Today Rosa A. Clemente released the following statement:

"I am honored and excited to accept this invitation to run with Cynthia McKinney. Cynthia McKinney is a hero to me and many others across this country and around the world for her courage in standing up to George Bush while the Democratic Party establishment caved.

"This campaign is the opportunity the Hip-Hop generation has been working for. This is our time to address the issues affecting our communities – rising unemployment, the high cost of food and housing, a lack of quality public education and access to higher education, the prison-industrial complex, and unaccountable corporate media. These issues are not being addressed by either the Republican or Democratic nominee.

"I choose to do this, not for me, but for my generation, my community and my daughter. I don't see the Green Party as an alternative; I see it as an imperative. I trust that my Vice Presidential run will inspire all people, but especially young people of color, to recognize that we have more then two choices. Together, we can build the future we've been wanting."

Hip-hop artist M1 says, "I've never voted in the Presidential election; I've never felt strongly enough about a candidate to. Knowing that Rosa Clemente is down with Cynthia McKinney's run, I feel that now is the greatest opportunity for the Hip-Hop community to put our collective strength and power to the test and vote for someone who represents who we are and what we stand for."

No Holds Barred: Todd Hester on the Soul of Mixed Martial Arts

No Holds Barred: Todd Hester on the Soul of Mixed Martial Arts

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-11T13_13_26-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague Todd Hester, who is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine (http://gladmag.com/).

Todd is someone who has been immersed in the combat sports for many years. He started training with the Gracies in the late 1980's, covered the first UFC in 1993, and has been ringside or cageside for countless MMA events all around the world.

Now, in a provocative new editorial called "Redemption and Transformation", in the current edition of Gladiator Magazine, he argues that MMA has lost its soul.

Commenting on what grappling, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts are really about, he wrote, "it isn't about the fighting." He also argued, "fighting for the sake of pure violence is basically immoral."

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the transformation of mixed martial arts from, as he called it, the "cerebral" sport it once was, to its current state which celebrates "mindless, juvenile violence." We also discuss what can be done to change the sport of mixed martial arts into something which plays a more positive role.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by commenting on this past Saturday's thrilling fight between Kendall Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) and Ricardo Torres (32-2, 28 KOs). After being dropped twice, Holt rallied to knock out Torres in just 61 seconds of the first round to capture the WBO junior welterweight title from Torres. This fight, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, will be replayed Tuesday, July 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on SHO2. Next, the annual meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) took place this past weekend in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The ABC is comprised of the athletic commissions in the U.S. and Canada, including in their tribal communities, and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, attended this meeting. We had a lengthy interview with him about what the ABC is and is not doing to deal with the many controversies which continue to arise in the sport of boxing. Malignaggi Update; Cast off, rehabilitation begins, ready for Hatton in the Fall

NEW YORK CITY– IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs) had a cast removed from his right hand last Tuesday and he has started rehabilitation.

Two world champions -- Malignaggi (R) and pro soccer player Thierry Henry, who was a key player on the 1998 World Cup champion French National Team -- who were at the recent Sara D. Roosevelt Park in New York City.

Malignaggi underwent hand surgery May 28 to repair a fractured metacarpal bone of the middle finger on his right hand, suffered during his title-defense win by 12-round decision against Lovemore N’dou.

“I feel good about the whole situation,” Malignaggi said yesterday from his Brooklyn home. “Getting the cast off was the first step, now rehabilitation starts. There’s no pain or swelling of the hand. I’m moving forward, thanks to Dr. Margles, who has saved my career several times. I’m looking ahead to a big showdown in the fall. I’ll be ready to rock ‘n roll against Ricky Hatton.”

Renowned boxing hand specialist, Dr. Steven Margles, operated on Paulie at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. He has also repaired the hands of former world champions Vinny Paz, “Irish” Micky Ward and Harry Simon, to name a few of his more notable boxing patients.

“I removed his cast and took x-rays,” Dr. Margles explained. “There was no pain and the fracture is healing like magic. Right now, he’s on or ahead of schedule.”

HOLT RALLIES DRAMATICALLY TO WIN WBO 140-POUND TITLE, LAMONT PETERSON STOPS CASTANEDA TO REMAIN UNBEATEN ON A SPECIAL EDITION OF SHOBOX

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Hagler-Hearns gave way to Holt-Torres Saturday as fireworks arrived a day late on SHOWTIME.

In one of the most dramatic and explosive opening rounds and rematches in recent memory, Kendall "Rated R" Holt and Ricardo Torres combined to knock each other down three times in 61 seconds on a truly special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation.

After Holt hit the canvas twice in 34 seconds, the WBO No. 2 contender rallied spectacularly to knock Torres out cold and win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight title at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc., presented the exciting event, which aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

"Rated R" For "Retaliation'': In as wild and exciting give-and-take slugfest as you'll see -- and a serious candidate for not only Round of the Year, but Fight of the Year, Kendall Holt rallied spectacularly from two knockdowns to knock out defending champion Ricardo Torres at 1:01 of the first round to capture the WBO junior welterweight title on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation Saturday on SHOWTIME.
Photos: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

After Torres floored Holt 13 seconds in with a right to the head, the champion knocked the challenger down a second time 21 seconds later. With fans in attendance and those watching on television believing the fight was over, Holt connected with an overhand right to Torres’ head, sent him crashing to the ropes and ended matters at 1:01 of the opening round when referee Jay Nady stopped the exceptionally thrilling contest.

“I may go down, but I get back up,” Holt, who was cut over the right eye, said. “This is better than a dream come true. Let the blood flow.”

Since the turnabout was so sudden and unexpected, everyone in the theater, including Mike Tyson, Paris Hilton and Julio Cesar Chavez, watched a replay on a video screen to see what had really transpired during the 61 scintillating seconds.

Holt (24-2, 13 KOs), of Paterson, N.J., became the 28th ShoBox fighter – and fourth in 2008 -- to capture a world title since the series premiered in July 2001.

“I never saw the first knockdown coming,” said Holt, who joined fellow ShoBox alums, Andre Berto, Juan Manuel Lopez and Timothy Bradley, to claim world championship belts in ‘08. “I looked away and was distracted. I saw the second knockdown coming, but I couldn’t do anything about it.”

A disappointed Torres (32-2, 28 KOs), of Barranquilla, Colombia, seemingly had his third title defense wrapped up before Holt’s incredible comeback.

“I had him (Holt),” Torres said. “He was in my hands. I got careless. He got me.”

ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood was amazed at what he witnessed.

“This is as wild a fight as we’ve had in the seven years of ShoBox,” he said. “It re-confirmed one of the main reasons why we love boxing. Regardless of what had happened earlier, a fighter can do what Kendall Holt did. Five seconds before Holt landed the knockout punch, I would not have given 10 cents for his chances.”

In the co-feature, talented Lamont Peterson (25-0, 12 KOs) kept his perfect record in tact by scoring a late knockdown en route to a ninth-round TKO over hard-trying Rogelio Castaneda (24-14-3, eight KOs), of Tijuana, Mexico.

Unbeaten, world-ranked junior welterweight Lamont Peterson registered a ninth-round TKO over game Rogelio Castaneda in the ShoBox co-feature at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. The doubleheader was promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank, Inc.

Peterson, of Washington, D.C., connected with a punishing right hook to the temple late in the ninth round and sent Mexico’s Castaneda crashing violently to the canvas. Moments later, referee Russell Mora stopped the contest at 2:50 at the request of Castaneda’s corner.

“I thought Lamont did pretty well considering this was his first fight in six months,” said Peterson’s trainer, Barry Hunter. “I give him a ‘B.’ ”

A world-ranked contender at 140 pounds, Peterson explained that he changed stances to score the knockdown.

“I turned southpaw and landed a clean shot to the temple,” Peterson said.

Castaneda’s corner said they waved the white towel to end the contest due to their concern of further punishment.

“The kid (Castaneda) is like a brother to me,” said Castaneda’s trainer, Israel Piceno. “There was only one round to go and he had taken too many punches. It was an easy decision. He wasn’t going to win a decision anyway.”

Nick Charles called the action from ringside with Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing.

Message from Team Edgar Santana...‏

Due to recent rumblings regarding MSG being a potential venue for a September 20th Roy Jones - Joe Calzaghe showdown and Dmitry Salita joining Jones’ Square Ring promotional company, Team Santana has instructed promoter Lou DiBella to reach out to Square Ring and make a Santana – Salita fight.

Santana – Salita is a fight people want to see and would no doubt be a commercial success. We sincerely hope that Jones - Calzaghe comes to NYC. Roy Jones is an active legend and it would be an honor for Edgar Santana to be on a Roy Jones undercard. We can make MSG buzz with further excitement by taking on Salita. We are eagerly waiting to see if Lou Dibella can strike the deal. Once the fight is made the NY Puerto Rican community will come out in mass to buy tickets.

Edgar Santana is ready, willing and able !!

FINAL QUOTES AND THOUGHTS AND WEIGHTS RICARDO TORRES vs. KENDALL HOLT AND LAMONT PETERSON-ROGELIO CASTANEDA; Friday, July 4th,

NOTE: WEIGHTS – Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt each weighed in at 139 pounds during Friday’s weigh-in. Lamont Peterson and Rogelio Castaneda each tipped the scales at 141 pounds.

Both talented fighters weighed 139 pounds, one under the division limit. The fight card is promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank, Inc.

Ten months after a wildly controversial ending to their first fight, Ricardo Torres will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight title against No. 2 contender Kendall Holt in a rematch on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on Saturday, July 5, 2008, live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Holt hopes to show his true colors again, and leave Torres seeing stars on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation tomorrow/Saturday on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) when he challenges defending champion Torres for the WBO junior welterweight title in a highly anticipated main event of a controversial fight that took place 10 months ago.

Photos: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

In the 10-round junior welterweight co-feature, undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA)/WBO No. 5 140-pound contender Lamont Peterson (24-0, 11 KOs) will put his undefeated record on the line against former International Boxing Association champion Rogelio Castaneda. Top Rank will promote both contests from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

Torres (32-1, 28 KOs), who will defend his WBO crown for a third time, rallied to score a hotly debated 11th-round TKO over Holt (23-2, 12 KOs) on Sept. 1, 2007, in the champion’s hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia.

RICARDO TORRES

“Holt’s style bothered me the first few rounds of our first fight, and it took me a while to figure him out. He is not an easy guy to fight.

“Holt kept running away from me and he wouldn’t stand still. He wasn’t really doing anything except running.

“I made some mistakes in the first fight. Now, I know how to resolve some mistakes I made and take advantage of Holt’s mistakes. I will pressure him and make him do things that he is not ready to do.

“I don’t think Holt is going to change how he fights. He is going to run and stay away from me. We plan to cut off the ring and keep him off of the ropes.

“I had some personal problems to take care off before taking this fight against Holt. This was the best opportunity for me. They talked about me fighting Ricky Hatton at one time, but it didn’t happen.

“Holt is a great boxer. His hand speed bothered me in the first fight. I have to get close to him and not let him dictate the rhythm of this fight.”

Stars and stripes forever: Getting into the spirit of the day, Kendall Holt (left) of Paterson, N.J., dons a red, white and blue hat while posing with Ricardo Torres (wearing a hat from his native Colombia) after Friday's weigh-in at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

KENDALL HOLT

“If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense. No one else would have made Torres this kind of money except for me. That is why he took the fight.

“Torres hits really hard, but I will stand my ground and box at my leisure.

“I got caught in an exchange against Torres and the referee prematurely stopped the first fight. The referee stopped the fight because he said I was hurt, but so what? You stop the fight when a fighter can’t defend himself. Arturo Gatti wouldn’t be who he is if they had stopped his fights.

“After looking at the tape of the first Torres fight, I should have been circling and sticking the jab. Torres caught me at a good time and in an exchange when my hands were down. The referee prematurely stopped the fight. I was still able to defend myself. I wasn’t incoherent.

“I fought after the Torres fight and was able to get past our first fight mentally, emotionally and physically.

“Torres fought pretty passively against me. This fight,

I will focus on keeping the action alive and strategically weakening him. I am going to be as active as Marvin Hagler. I am going to make Torres pay for his mistakes.
“Torres is not going to come in there and just try to take my head off. If he said that, he is lying. He is worried about getting hit. When you are a knockout puncher, why would you be asking for smaller gloves?

“This whole week I have been thinking about hitting Torres and watching him fall. When I start to calm down, this fight is in the bag for me. If I box Torres’ ears off, I box his ears off. If I knock him out, I knock him out.

LAMONT PETERSON

“If Castaneda gets too aggressive, I am going to have to let him know that he cannot charge me.

“I can’t look past Castaneda. If I don’t do my job and do what I am supposed to do against him, I won’t be able to have the bigger fights.

“I match up with any of the guys with the 140-pound belts, and I know I can beat them. I would out-skill Timothy Bradley. I can show everyone that I can box against Ricky Hatton. I would track Paulie Malignaggi down.

“This has been the longest time for me between fights. I am ready to hit and be hit. I am ready to work.

“How I win and how I look is important tomorrow night. The better I look, the more demand there will be for me.”

Rogelio Castaneda (left) and Lamont Peterson square off after the weigh in. Both weighed 141 pounds. The unbeaten, world-ranked Peterson and Castaneda will collide in the ShoBox 10-round junior welterweight co-feature at Planet Hollywood.

ROGELIO CASTANEDA

“Peterson is a good boxer, but can’t fight. I want to do whatever is necessary to take him out of this fight. I want to fight inside and come in behind my jab.

“I want to give Peterson his first defeat. I know that I have to knock him out to defeat him. I am not going to win a decision.

“I don’t really know my fighting style. They tell me I’m a boxer and an aggressively strong fighter. I want to run through Peterson.

“I have had problems with cuts. I always get cut in my fights.”

DEANDRE LATIMORE WANTS VERNO PHILLIPS

ST. LOUIS, MO- After his stunning ESPN2 televised knockout victory over Sechew Powell on June 11th at the Hard Rock Café in New York City, Deandre “THE BULL” Latimore is looking for his next victim stated his manager, Jerry Giuliano.

Said Giuliano, “We would really like a shot at the current IBF champion Verno Phillips before he files for social security.” The 22 year old Latimore knows that Phillips is getting up in age and hopes to get a crack at him before he retires.

Continued Giuliano, “Deandre deserves this chance as he not only beat Powell, who was rated # 1 by the IBF, but he is the only fighter ever to stop him. We were hoping for a fight with Cory Spinks with the winner taking on Phillips.

We have called Cory out on several occasions but it is apparent he knows that Deandre is too much for him. The fans of St. Louis would love that fight as a cross-town showdown. We’re prepared to show that Deandre truly is the boss.”

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo,ABC Meeting and MMA

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo,ABC Meeting and MMA On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the discussion we had on the most recent edition of this show with the award-winning boxing writer and author, Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com, about his views on UFC and the mixed martial arts. While we obviously disagreed with most of his views on MMA, we commenton the need to establish the positive social benefits of legalizing and sanctioning MMA. This is not only not done by most of the supporters of MMA, but many of the major MMA promotions actually promote anti-social values and bad sportsmanship. Next, we preview the much-anticipated rematch between WBO junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) and challenger Kendall Holt (23-2, 12 KOs). Their first bout, held Sept. 1, 2007, in Torres's hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, ended with a controversial 11th-round TKO win for Torres. This fight was clearly marred by a wildly unruly crowd, which repeatedly soaked the ring with debris and liquids, even hitting Holt and a cornerman with beer cans. The Torres-Holt rematch takes place this Saturday night, July 5, at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime. It is the most important fight being held this weekend, and should be an energetic, exciting scrap. On a media teleconference call this week, we spoke with both Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt about their first fight and what to expect inthis one. We also got the comments of promoter Bob Arum about thecontinuing controversies in boxing, including the much-discusseddisqualification last week of Humberto Soto in his fight withFrancisco Lorenzo. We next had a lengthy interview with Nick Lembo, counsel for the NewJersey State Athletic Control Board, and a longtime supporter of mixedmartial arts.
