CUNNINGHAM vs. ADAMEK - ON SALE MONDAY IN NEWARK, N.J.‏

IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, from Philadelphia, Will Take on Jersey City, N.J. Polish Superstar and Former World Champion Tomasz Adamek in Main Event Co-Promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions

NEWARK, N.J.—International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-1, 11 KOs) will meet Polish-born former world champion Tomasz Adamek (35-1, 24 KOs) at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Tickets priced at $303, $153, $78, $53, $38 go on sale on Monday at 11 a.m. and can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 201-507-8900.

The event, with full undercard, is being co-promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions.

A classic boxer-puncher, Cunningham will be making the second defense of his IBF 200-pound limit crown, which he won by defeating Krzystztof Wlodarczyk in Poland on May 26, 2007. Six months earlier, Cunningham suffered the sole loss of his career in a controversial split decision won by Wlodarczyk when the two squared off for the vacant IBF championship.

Cunningham also scored notable wins against former IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin “Koncrete” Davis and Panamanian strongman Guillermo Jones, who recently took the World Boxing Association cruiserweight championship from Firat Arslan on Sept. 27.

Adamek burst upon the boxing scene in his first fight in America against Australian Paul “Hurricane” Briggs for the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight championship at the United Center in Chicago on May 21, 2005. Their 12-round slugfest, which Adamek won by majority decision, was one of the better fights of that year.

The inevitable rematch came the following year and rivaled the first match in its brutal intensity. Again, Adamek won by majority decision.

Adamek’s lone loss came against undefeated “Bad” Chad Dawson in Kissimmee, Fla., on Feb. 3, 2007. The slick Dawson built a scorecard lead that Adamek came close to erasing when he landed his vaunted right-hand power shot and sent Dawson to the canvas in the 10th round. Dawson literally held on to Adamek to narrowly escape the round and survived to win the match by decision.

Adamek catapulted himself into position to face Cunningham by scoring an eighth round technical knockout on April 19 over O’Neil “Supernova” Bell, who in 2006 became the first undisputed cruiserweight world champion since Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield held that distinction in 1988.

MARTINEZ READY FOR BREAK OUT PERFORMANCE VERSUS BUNEMA

***World-Rated Contender Sergio Martinez Takes on Alex Bunema for the interim WBC 154 Pound Title this Saturday on HBO***

New York– WBC # 2 rated contender Sergio Martinez will be looking to cement his status as the next superstar of the 154 pound division, when he battles Alex Bunema, this Saturday, October 4 on HBO’s Boxing After Dark from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

The 33-year-old Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KOs) is a former IBO and WBC Latino 154 pound titlist, who earned his opportunity to fight for the interim WBC world title with a fourth round knockout over Saul Roman in April 2007. Most recently, Martinez demolished Archak TerMeliksetian via seventh round TKO on June 7 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.

“Alex Bunema is one of the top contenders in the junior middleweight division…he’s rated by every major sanctioning body, including # 1 by the WBA. When Sergio Martinez beats Bunema this Saturday on HBO, he’ll prove he’s the new man at 154,” said DBE president Lou DiBella.

Residing in Madrid, Spain, and having won and defended the IBO belt in the UK, Martinez is already an international entity, whose dream is to one day make a world title defense at the legendary Luna Park stadium in Argentina.

“With his last three knockout victories all coming in the United States, Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez has just begun to showcase his skills for American audiences. This Argentinean southpaw with movie-star good looks is not only the next boxing great from his country, but a future international star,” added Martinez’ advisor Sampson Lewkowicz.

The Martinez-Bunema twelve-round bout is part of an HBO tripleheader dubbed “Night of the Rising Stars II,” and will include a pair of ten round bouts featuring jr. middleweight Alfredo Angulo vs. Andrey Tsurkan and featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Marcos Ramirez. HBO Boxing After Dark will broadcast all three bouts live, beginning at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast.)

Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Ringside Ticket, in association with Arena Box-Promotion, DiBella Entertainment, and Star Boxing, remaining tickets priced at $150, $100 and $50, can be purchased at Pechanga’s box office, by calling, toll-free, (877) 711-2WIN, or online at www.pechanga.com/tickets/Online .

Doors open at 5 p.m. PT, with the first bout beginning at 6 p.m. PT.

BROADWAY BOXING RETURNS OCTOBER 22; Edgar Santana versus Luis Rodriguez, Randall Bailey battles Kpakop Allotey

***Edgar Santana versus Luis Rodriguez in Jr. Welterweight Main Event, Plus Former World Champion Randall Bailey at BB King Blues Club; Card Will Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month***

New York – DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series returns to New York City on Wednesday, October 22 at BB King Blues Club in Times Square. In the ten-round main event, local favorite Edgar Santana, from Spanish Harlem, takes on Monterrey, Mexico’s Luis Rodriguez, and former WBO world champion Randall Bailey battles Kpakop Allotey.

Originally from Manati, Puerto Rico, the ever-popular Santana (25-3, 15 KOs), a winner of 18 out of 19 bouts over the last five years, is poised to become a world-rated contender, but must first overcome the formidable Rodriguez (22-2, 13 KOs), who has won seven out of eight and made a strong showing during a points defeat to Francisco Figueroa in a bid for the NABF belt on May 14 in NYC.

Former WBO junior welterweight world champion Bailey (37-6, 34 KOs) from Miami, Florida, continues to be one of the most feared punchers in the 140 pound division – having iced Anthony Mora to pick up the vacant WBC Latino jr. welterweight title in January and scoring a first-round knockout over Dario Esalas on the last Broadway Boxing card at BB King Blues Club on August 6th. The 34-year-old Bailey will take on Silver Spring, Maryland’s Allotey (14-5, 12 KOs) in a ten rounder. Of Ghanaian descent, Allotey arrives with extensive big fight experience, having just won the vacant WBA Pan African lightweight belt via TKO 5 over Gabriel Phakula on August 4 in Accra, Ghana.

Also on the October 22 show, Staten Island’s Gary Stark Jr. returns to action for the first time since avenging a May 2007 loss to Andres Ledesma by unanimously outpointing Ledesma at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom on March 5. Stark Jr. (21-2, 8 KOs) will be in ten-round junior featherweight action.

In addition, two-time NY Golden Gloves champion and 2008 National Golden Gloves champion Tor Hamer, a recent Penn State graduate, will make his pro debut at heavyweight versus Joe Rabotte (2-3, 1 KO). Hamer is one of the newest members of the DBE team.

Rounding out the seven bout card will be light heavyweight Will Rosinsky (1-0, 1 KO) from Queens; Brooklyn’s Philip Jackson Benson in a middleweight pro debut versus Robert Harris from Youngstown, Ohio; and super middleweight Hajra Sujak (1-0) from the Bronx.

DiBella Entertainmnet is partnering with Everlast for Breast Cancer Awareness month. “DBE is happy to support the effort to find a cure for breast cancer. I’ve been personally touched by this disease. My sister is a breast cancer survivor,” said DBE president Lou DiBella.

DiBella Entertainment and Everlast are both proud to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation who is committed through research to finding a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. To support this initiative and promote awareness, Everlast will display a pink canvas and corner cushions at the event and every fighter on the card will be outfitted in Pink Everlast Pro Fight Gloves.

Tickets for Broadway Boxing priced at $200 (VIP Table), $150 (ringside table, ringside seats), $100 (floor tables, floor seats, stage seats), $70 (general admission) are currently on sale. They are available by calling DiBella Entertainment at (212) 947-2577. For more information on Broadway Boxing, please visit DiBella entertainment on the web at www.dbe1.com.

ALEX “THE TECHNICIAN” BUNEMA

Alex Bunema was born in Kinshasa, Zaire, nine months after the city hosted the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle,” Muhammad Ali’s stunning upset knockout of George Foreman in October, 1974.

Before and long after the fight, an unprecedented boxing buzz engulfed Zaire and Alex was immediately drawn to the Sweet Science.

“The thing that really got me into boxing was the Ali-Foreman fight in ’74,” said Alex, who tallied a 39-1 amateur record before turning professional in August 1996. Growing up, everybody was talking about that fight.

“That was one of the greatest fights of all time and it happened in Zaire. For months and years, that was the only thing people were talking about. It inspired a lot of kids to pick up the gloves and pursue a career in boxing.”

While the Ali-Foreman fight pushed Alex to learn the nuances and intricacies of one of the most difficult individual sports, it was his father’s calming influence that helped him stay motivated and dedicated to the sport.

“My dad used to be a boxer,” said Alex, who stormed out of the professional gates winning his first 13 fights. “He fought as an amateur. He would tell me about his fights and that would inspire me. I started boxing when I was just eight years old.”

Alex quickly turned heads with his advanced skills and strength. He would dispatch opponents with one-part finesse and one-part power.

He would become a four-time national champion in Zaire. He did it in 1992 at 132 pounds, and from ‘93-‘95 he would terrorize the 139 pound division.

Alex’s hard work and determination led him to qualify for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga., but, through no fault of his own, Alex was unable to compete.

“I was one of the youngest fighters to make it to the national team,” Alex said. “I won the Central African tournament. I was ready to go to Atlanta, but the sports federation wanted my family to give them a certain amount of money, and they didn’t have it.”

Alex would now focus on his professional career.

At the age of 21, on Aug. 30, 1996, Alex said goodbye to the amateur world and said hello to professional boxing. Alex would knockout his first opponent, Scan Ione, in the opening stanza.

Alex would face one of his toughest challenges only a year after turning professional. On Sept. 9, 1997, in Bay St. Louis, Miss., Alex got in the ring with former National Golden Gloves amateur champion Orlando Hollis.

Alex didn’t waste anytime as he got off to a hot start and never looked back. He scored one knockdown in the second round. He dropped Hollis a second time in the third, latter stopping him at 1:48, registering a technical knockout victory.

On March 2, 2000, in Las Vegas, Nev., Alex proved he was capable of winning a tough, close fight against a quality opponent. Alex took home a 10-round split decision victory against former world-title challenger Tony Marshall, who came into the fight with more experience and ring savvy than Alex.

Marshall kept the busier pace, but Alex was the harder puncher. He rocked Marshall in the fifth round and staggered him in the eighth. His hard-hitting style won him fans in the audience and points from the judges. Alex won a split decision where two judges favored him 96-94, and the third judge gave it to Marshall, 97-93.

By now, Alex was gaining experience and momentum. He had only two losses on his resume and a handful of quality wins against tough opposition.

His next challenge would come in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior middleweight title eliminator on Oct. 26, 2001 in Temecula, Calif. against the veteran and crafty Bronco McKart.

It was an exciting fight which earned a standing ovation from the crowd as there were many give-and-take rounds that were close and hard to score. Both fighters were exchanging leather as if it were going out of fashion.

Alex stood a great chance of winning since he applied constant pressure throughout. The judges, however, didn’t see it that way. Alex lost a hard-fought 12-round split decision with one judge favoring him 115-113 while the remaining judges saw it for McKart 116-112 and 117-111.

After the fight McKart admitted, “I almost went down in the fifth. He hit me hard with a body shot and I was very close to going to a knee. Bunema can box and punch with the best of them.”

To date, Alex’s most visible fight came against former world champion Jermain Taylor.

On March 27, 2004, Alex challenged Taylor for his World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas title in Little Rock, Ark. At the time, Taylor was an undefeated, rising contender.

Alex came out aggressively in the early rounds in an effort to wear down the harder-hitting Taylor. Alex is known for his incredible stamina that can wear out even the most conditioned athletes.

Taylor was able to keep a busy pace and consistently landed the harder punches.

Taylor scored two knockdowns in the seventh round, both coming after a series of right hands, and the referee stopped the fight without a count with 44 seconds left in the round.

After the fight, Alex said, “I’m very disappointed. I felt like the referee let me down. I take a knee and he stops the fight. I’ve been down before and have come back to win the fight.”

Alex rebounded nicely after the Taylor loss, winning four of five fights.

The Zaire native took on the biggest challenge of his career when he faced former International Boxing Federation junior middleweight champion Roman “Made in Hell” Karmazin at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 19, 2008.

On paper, it looked as though Karmazin would cut through Bunema. In fact, only one of the three judges gave Bunema a single round in the first nine.

That all changed early in the 10th round when Bunema landed a devastating left hook that sent the Russian to the canvas. Bunema knew he had Karmazin in trouble, but he waited for the right moment to unleash a three-punch combination that left Karmazin crumbled on the floor in his own corner. The only thing left was for the referee to call of the action.

“I knew Karmazin was in very good shape from the opening bell,” Bunema said. “I also believed that he watched a lot of tape on my fights because he changed his style for me.

“He was trying to counter-punch more. The fight was close until I knocked him into the corner in the 10th round. I knew he was in trouble then. I thought it was over when I hit him with the big right but he stayed up.

“I followed him and landed the big hook that knocked him down. I was not surprised I did what I said I was going to do. Now I want a title shot against WBA champion Joachim Alcine.”

Karmazin’s trainer, Freddie Roach, summed it up simply after the fight.

“He told me in between rounds that he had no power and felt really weak,” Roach said. “He got caught and after that he never really recovered.”

Bunema’s next challenge came from respected Argentinean contender Walter Matthysse (26-3) at the beautiful outdoor Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, on July 11, 2008.

Bunema started out where he had left off with Karmazin delivering a three-punch combination in the third round that began and ended with left hooks—with a left uppercut in between for good measure—that sent Matthysse down flat on his back. While Matthysse gamely rose to his feet, referee Michael Griffin deemed him unfit to continue.

Alex is married and has two daughters.

Giovanni Lorenzo reloads after learning valuable lesson

NEW YORK CITY– 2000 Dominican Republic Olympian Giovanni “El Chico Malo” Lorenzo (26-1, 18 KOs) soon embarks on a mission to prove that, coming off of his first pro loss in June, he still remains a clear and present danger in the middleweight division.

Lorenzo lost a voluntary IBF title eliminator fight to former world champion Raul “El Diamente” Marquez in a razor-close 12-round decision, separated by a single point on all three judges’ scorecards, but only after one point was controversially deducted for a head butt, live on Showtime Championship Boxing from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

“Losing to Raul Marquez in my first TV fight was very difficult for me,” Giovanni said. “At the same time, I have gained a tremendous amount of experience from this fight. I waited a little too much thinking Marquez would fade. My plan was to come on hard down the stretch. I felt like the bigger and stronger puncher in the fight. I learned that I need to be more aggressive. I am hoping to land another really big fight very soon and I am training very hard to regain my status as the top middleweight contender so I can complete my destiny of becoming middleweight champion of the world.

“Marquez is the kind of fighter that, if Abraham takes him lightly (Abraham defends his IBF title Saturday night against Marquez live from Germany on pay-per-view in the United States and Canada), he is capable of pulling off an upset. Marquez should not be underestimated because he shows you many different angles. He can punch a lot harder than people give him credit for and he is a tough, tough Mexican warrior with a ton of experience and determination.”

Going into the title eliminator, Lorenzo had been criticized in some quarters for having fought relatively light opposition. Team Lorenzo rolled the dice, even though they didn’t have to fight an eliminator for “Gio” to get a title shot, accepting the challenge (and risk) to fight the crafty U.S. Olympian Marquez. The former IBF junior middleweight title-holder had a distinct advantage in professional experience having fought 40 pro fights, 257 rounds and battled world champions Jermain Taylor, Fernando Vargas, and Shane Mosley. “Gio,” on the other hand (or glove), at that time had only 25 pro bouts and 90 rounds of action under his belt.

“Giovanni is going to learn a lot from our fight,” Marquez remarked. “He could afford to lose that fight, I couldn’t. He’s young and has a very bright future. He’s a big middleweight – strong puncher, definitely with power – who is going to make a name for himself.”

Lorenzo learned an invaluable lesson against Marquez as the 12-rounds of hard-earned experience will prepare him very well for the future. Giovanni is still a top 10-rated middleweight challenger, No. 6 by the IBF and No. 9 by the WBC, who doesn’t celebrate his 28th birthday until October 13.

“The Marquez fight was a good experience for ‘Gio’ who is still young,” Giovanni’s co-manager Rich Ryan said. “Raul was too savvy, too experienced for ‘Gio,’ who had never fought a lefty before. He’s a much better fighter than he showed in that fight, but he still won six rounds against the house fighter. After the fight, we went back to the hotel and Marquez went to the hospital. The next day you wouldn’t have thought Marquez had won if you had seen him because he’d obviously been to a plastic surgeon and was all bandaged up. We can’t wait to get ‘Gio’ back in the ring to show everybody how much he’s learned and improved.”

Lorenzo posted a 247-16 amateur record, capturing 15 gold medals in International competition. He is from Jeringa, Dominican Republic but now lives and fights out of the Washington Heights section of New York City.

Abraham-Marquez; IBF middleweight fight headlines Saturday’s PPV in U.S. & Canada

BAMBERG, Germany-- IBF middleweight champion “King” Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) and mandatory challenger Raul “El Diamente” Marquez (41-3, 29 KOs) voiced their respect for each other at today´s press conference in Bamberg, Germany.

Raul Marquez and Arthur Abraham

Saturday’s Abraham-Marquez headlined card is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland, presented by Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Seminole Warriors Boxing. The broadcast is being distributed in the United States and Canada by Integrated Sports for live viewing at 3 PM/ET – 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV, DISH Network, Viewer’s Choice Canada, and Bell ExpressVue, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. A replay will be shown that same night starting at 9 PM/ET. Al Bernstein and Nick Charles will call the action.

“I am happy to be here in Germany to fight Abraham,” the 37-year-old Marquez said. “He is a great champion and I do have a lot of respect for him. But I came here to win. I don´t think there will be a KO.I have prepared myself for 12 rounds. I am ready to exploit Abraham´s weaknesses.”

“King Arthur” will be out to please his home fans – Bamberg is the city where he started boxing – for a second time in 17 months. Back in May 2007, in his first fight after breaking his jaw against Edison Miranda, the 28-year-old knocked out Sebastian Demers in the third round. But “King Arthur” knows that Marquez will be a much tougher opponent. “He is fast, mobile and clever,” Abraham assessed. “In other words: He is a really good boxer. That will be a tough challenge for me. In my last mandatory title defense I stopped Khoren Gevor but Marquez is much stronger than him.”

Abraham’s head trainer, Ulli Wegner, also is full of praise for the former world champion. “I’ve know Marquez for a long, long time,” he remarked. “I saw him at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. During the times of the GDR, he once fought against one of our guys. Ten years ago he was world champion and he has gotten stronger and more experienced since then. Many people were surprised to see him beat Lorenzo in the eliminator, but not me. Arthur will be in for a hard battle but I expect him to succeed.”

In the 12-round co-feature, Enad Licina (14-1, 8 KOs) will clash with former NABO champion Otis “Triple OG” Griffin (19-3, 7 KOs), winner of the “The Next Great Champion” television reality show, for the IBF Intercontinental cruiserweight title.

Former World Champion Vivian Harris Headlines “Knockout Knights” at Medieval Times

Lyndhurst, New Jersey – Boxing is back at Medieval Times! Former world champion Vivian Harris will headline “Knockout Knights” big-time boxing returns to the beautiful Medieval Times Castle in Lyndhurst, NJ on Wednesday, October 29th.

The hard-hitting Harris, a Guyanese native who resides in Brooklyn, New York, has long been on the list of boxing’s most avoided fighters. A pro since 1997, Harris finally made a splash in 2002 when he fought and knocked out Diosbelys Hurtado to win the WBA junior welterweight championship. Harris (28-3-1, 18 KOs), who has always been at the top of the junior welterweight rankings, will look to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Junior Witter in a title bout. The man they call “Vicious” is looking to make a statement in his first fight back in over a year.

“I am forgetting about the past. I am rededicated to making it back to the top. My first step will be to make a big statement on October 29.”

The co-main event will feature hometown hero Wayne “Lights Out” Johnsen (17-3, 9 KOs). Johnsen is also on the comeback trail after falling short in his last two bouts, both of which came during last season’s “The Contender” boxing reality television series. The extremely popular Johnsen will now be fighting in his own backyard for the first time.

“It’s great to have my comeback fight right here! I have fought in other parts of New Jersey before, but it will be extra special and especially motivating to perform for my fans right here in Lyndhurst.”

Also featured will be unbeaten prospects Alex Perez (9-0, 6 KOs) and Patrick Majewski (8-0, 5 KOs). Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez, fighting out of Newark, is a former highly rated amateur star and has served as a sparring partner for Joel Julio as well as Miguel Cotto.
The Polish-born Majewski is a hard-hitting up-and-coming prospect out of Atlantic City.

Mike Indri, President and CEO of Dignity Promotions, is proud to be putting together such an exciting night of boxing action.

“I am proud to deliver such a quality card for our great fans. Our premier event will feature big names and exciting young prospects. Dignity Promotions is committed to bringing a competitive, action-filled night of boxing on October 29th. Our goal is to put the “DIGNITY” back into boxing…by respecting the fighters and, most importantly, respecting the fans.”

“Knockout Knights” is expected to have eight exciting bouts. The Medieval Times Castle is located at 149 Polito Avenue in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Tickets are priced at $50.00 (Ringside), $40.00 (Reserved), and $30.00 (General Admission).

Corporate VIP tables are also available and include a “Meet & Greet” with many former boxing greats, including: Chuck Wepner, Alex Ramos, Renaldo Snipes, Lou Savarese, Micky Ward, and others

David Wright, the Mets' slugging third baseman

Page 6 Richard Johnson New York Post September 30 2008

David Wright, the Mets' slugging third baseman, preferred talking politics to baseball after his choke-prone team blew a last chance at the playoffs Sunday. That night, Wright, a Republican who has dined with President Bush at the White House, was chatting with Kelly Hocklass, an African-American woman, at Duke's Sports Bar on East 19th Street. A spy said, "[Wright] professed his love for [John] McCain and 'hot hockey mom' [Sarah Palin] and then told [Hocklass], 'I'm a white boy from Virginia. Who do you think I'm voting for?' " Wright also told her, "You are being fooled by [Barack] Obama because of the color of your skin." But Hocklass told us the two were just joking around. "We were just having a conversation," she said. "I wear an Obama pin and said to him, 'Don't tell me you're a McCain supporter.' We started joking about being Democrat versus Republican.

US Olympic Alternate Danny O’Connor; Now a true professional boxer

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– With his successful pro debut now behind him, 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate Danny O’Connor is hoping to stay busy as well as further adjust to fighting longer rounds with smaller gloves and no headgear.

In front of a large crowd of his enthusiastic fans and escorted into the ring by a Irish bagpipe player, O’Connor turned in an impressive performance against on September 17 in Manchester (NH), using a devastating body attack en route to stopping Jose Guerrido at 1:55 of the second round, when Guerrido’s trainer – former two-time world champion Aaron Davis – threw in the towel.

“It turned out to be like me and my coaches envisioned it,” O’Connor reflected. “All of the hard training paid off. I felt good in the ring. I was a little too anxious going for the early knockout and didn’t show all of the ability I have. I’m a big body puncher. I love banging the body because it slows down the opponent and leaves open holes for my shots. That’s what happened.

“I did feel a lot of pressure fighting in front of so many of my fans and family, as well as Leon (Margules, Seminole Warriors Boxing executive director) coming up from Florida to watch me fight for the first time. But I’ve always fought well under pressure and I settled right down. It’s going to take a little while to get used to fighting with smaller gloves, but I liked fighting without head gear, and didn’t really get into the longer rounds. Punching felt different with 8-ounce gloves, but it’s something I’ll quickly adapt to. I did feel naked fighting without a shirt. I like fighting as a professional better than as an amateur.”

The 23-year-old O’Connor, fighting out of Framingham (MA), won this year’s US Future Stars National Championship, in which he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the National Golden Gloves Tournament, both in the 141-pound light welterweight division. Danny’s most notable victory as an amateur was a dominating victory, 23-3, against eventual 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, on May 29 in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

“I really couldn’t have asked for a better result,” O’Connor’s co-manager (with Rob Valle) and head trainer David Keefe remarked. “He wasn’t hurt at all and threw some great body shots, which will serve him well as he moved up. I’m also very happy with the promotional pick we made with Leon and Seminole Warriors Boxing.”

Among the celebrities watching O’Connor’s pro debut were legendary boxers Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns, who won the same National Golden Gloves light welterweight title in 1977 as Danny did this year, Hall of Fame trainer Angelo Dundee, and members of he pop group “Boys Like Girls.” Keefe’s brother John for the is a drummer for gold-record selling “Boys Like Girls” and the band has supported Danny.

Reality TV show winner Otis Griffin fighting for legitimacy in Germany; IBF middleweight Abraham-Marquez title fight....

Reality TV show winner Otis Griffin fighting for legitimacy in Germany; IBF middleweight Abraham-Marquez title fight headlines Saturday’s PPV in U.S. & Canada

HOBOKEN, N.J.– Former NABO champion Otis “Triple OG” Griffin has traveled halfway around the world, from his California home to Germany for Saturday’s (October 4) fight against Enad Licina, in order to prove that “The Next Great Champ” winner is much more than a reality television fighter.

Nothing has come easy for Alabama-native Griffin (19-3-2, 7 KOs), who battles Licina (14-1, 8 KOs) for the vacant IBF Intercontinental cruiserweight title in the 12-round co-feature on a special pay-per-view card, headlined by unbeaten International Boxing Federation middleweight champion “King” Arthur Abraham defending his belt against former world champion Raul “El Diamente” Marquez, live from Bamberg, Germany.

Abraham-Marquez is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland, presented by Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Seminole Warriors Boxing.

Griffin, fighting out of Sacramento, lost his pro debut to Jimmy Mince by four-round split decision in the preliminary round of the 2004 Oscar De La Hoya-sponsored reality television series on Fox, “The Next Great Champ.” When one of the fighters suddenly quit the show, Griffin was brought back and he took full advantage of his second chance, defeating Mohamad Elmahmoud (DEC4), Mince (DEC4 in semifinals) in a rematch and David Pareja (DEC6) in the championship final. The winner was supposed to fight in a sanctioned WBO title fight, but it never materialized and Griffin eventually built-up his pro record to 16-1-2, setting the stage in 2007 for an NABO light heavyweight championship bout against unbeaten Mike Nevitt (14-0), who Otis stopped in the seventh round.

Yugoslavian cruiserweight Licina (14-1, 8 KOs), rated No. 13 by the European Boxing Union and European Boxing Association, now fights out of Germany, where he’ll take on Griffin in Saturday’s co-feature.

Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs), rated No. 2 by The Ring and ESPN, captured the IBF middleweight title early three years ago by way of a fifth-round knockout of Kingsley Ikeke (23-1). Seven successful title defenses have followed against Edison Miranda, Shannon Taylor, Kofi Jantuah, Sebastian Demers, Khoren Gevor, Wayne Elcock and Elvin Ayala.

The 1992 U.S. Olympian Marquez (41-3-1, 29 KOs), rated No. 2 by the IBF as well as No. 8 by The Ring and ESPN, earned his title shot against Abraham by defeating previously undefeated No. 1 contender Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0) in their June 21st IBF title eliminator.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA AND MANNY PACQUIAO TO ANNOUNCE MEGA-FIGHT AT STATUE OF LIBERTY IN

Los Angeles, CA- Boxing superstars Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao will each make one of the biggest announcements of their respective careers when they officially announce their December 6 mega-fight at one of the most cherished landmarks in the United States-the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York City. The press event, the first ever to take place on Liberty Island, will kick-off a six-city press tour marking the official announcement of what is a dream match-up for sports fans and one of the biggest fights in boxing history.

While the Statue of Liberty hosts more than five million visitors each year, this will be the first press conference ever held on Liberty Island. Dedicated in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has become a symbol of freedom and democracy as it was the first landmark that millions of immigrants saw upon arrival in the United States. In 1924 it was named a National Monument and is one of the most recognizable statues in the world.

"We are delighted to be hosting this event on Liberty Island," said Brad Hill, President of Evelyn Hill Inc, the Concessionaire to the National Park Service. "This event is unlike anything we have ever done. By virtue of their great successes, Mexican American Oscar de la Hoya and Filipino Manny Pacquiao embody what the Statue of Liberty represents. We are working hard to ensure that this is not only a memorable day for the fighters and their camps, but everyone who attends."

De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc. and sponsored by Cazadores Tequila, Cerveza Tecate, Dewalt Tools and Southwest Airlines. The 12-round, 147-pound welterweight bout is set for Saturday, Dec. 6 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View.

"Having the opportunity to announce the fight at the Statue of Liberty is like a dream come true for me," said De La Hoya. "As the son of immigrants and a very proud Mexican-American, I believe the Statue of Liberty is the United States' greatest symbol of freedom and opportunity. I take great pride in what I have been able to accomplish as the son of immigrants and see myself as a true testament to the notion that with opportunity, hard work and determination anyone can realize their dreams."

"Although I am from the Philippines, the United States has given me the greatest opportunity to advance my career and financial security for my family and me," said Pacquiao. "Many Filipinos and some of my family members live there and the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of the great opportunities offered by the United States to the rest of the world."

In addition to the Statue of Liberty stop, the De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao press tour will stop at other monumental locations across the country that reinforces the magnitude of the event. The tour schedule is as follows:

The De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao pay-per-view telecast, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. Raul Marquez plans to spoil “King” Arthur’s mega-fight plans against Pavlik or Wright IBF middleweight title fight Oct. 4 on PPV in U.S. & Canada

HOBOKEN, N.J.– Former world champion Raul “El Diamente” Marquez, who overcome the destruction of Hurricane Ike, recently broke his Houston training camp and departed for Germany, where on October 4th he challenges unbeaten International Boxing Federation middleweight champion “King” Arthur Abraham, headlining a pay-per-view card airing in the United States and Canada live from Bamberg, Germany.

Abraham-Marquez is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland, presented by Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Seminole Warriors Boxing.

“I don’t talk trash-talk,” Marquez said right before leaving Houston, “but we took on Hurricane Ike, so Arthur Abraham should be nothing. We still don’t have electricity in my house, I’ve been staying at my sister-in-law’s house, and we had to wait 1 ½ hours for gas. I’m very positive about this fight. We’re going over there to win.

“I fought in Germany as an amateur and I’m sure some of Abraham’s coaches remember me. You read about needing to knockout your opponent over there to get a draw (laughs). I just hope the judges are fair. The judges are from America, Mexico and England. Wayne Kelly from New York City is the referee. I couldn’t ask for a better situation over there. All I can hope for is a fair decision. I’m glad this fight is on pay-per-view so people can judge for themselves. If there’s controversy, people back home will be able to see it and know who really won.”

Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs), rated No. 2 by The Ring and ESPN, captured the IBF middleweight title early three years ago by way of a fifth-round knockout of Kingsley Ikeke (23-1). Eight successful title defenses have followed against Edison Miranda twice, Shannon Taylor, Kofi Jantuah, Sebastian Demers, Khoren Gevor, Wayne Elcock and Elvin Ayala.

The 37-year-old Marquez (41-3-1, 29 KOs), rated No. 2 by the IBF as well as No. 8 by The Ring and ESPN, earned his title shot against Abraham by defeating previously unbeaten No. 1 contender Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0) in their IBF title eliminator on the June 21.

Marquez, a 1992 U.S. Olympian who owned the IBF junior middleweight title belt in 1997, is motivated by talk about Abraham fighting Kelly Pavlik or Winky Wright next year. “It’s like they’re ignoring me,” Marquez explained. “They’re looking ahead. I was a 4-1 underdog my last fight and I’ve trained even harder for this one. Only two out of 35 writers picked me to win my last fight and it’s pretty much the same thing for the Abraham fight. Abraham’s people are looking beyond me. I want to spoil all that talk about him fighting Pavlik or Wright in his next fight. Nobody’s giving me much of a shot but I’m ready.

“My game plan is to make him fight. He’s powerful and strong; I am, too. And I’m motivated by him looking ahead. I’ve gone back to my roots with my father (Arturo) and brother (Aldo) in my corner the last four fights. I tried some different trainers but my father made me an Olympian and world champion. I’m older and wiser now. I’m getting hit and cut less. I think my father’s the best trainer in the world. After I beat Abraham he’s going to be Trainer of the Year.”

Despite taking off 1 ½ years to work as a broadcaster, Raul is still much more battle tested in the ring than Abraham – 269 to 161 in rounds fought – having fought world champions Jermain Taylor, Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas and Yori Boy Campas.

“This isn’t going to be an easy fight and Abraham knows it,” Marquez added. “I have a lot more experience than him having fought Mosley, Taylor and Vargas, as well as other experienced fighters like Campas, (Keith) Mullings, (Jose Alfredo) Flores and (Bronco) McKart. I’ve fought guys with all kinds of different styles. I’m left-handed and I think that’s going to give Abraham problems. I’ve watched tapes of his fights and I think he had problems against (southpaw) Ian Gardiner. Even at 37, I will bring courage, power, great conditioning and keep a steady pace like I did in my last fight.

“After losing to Jermain Taylor, to get this far and fight for a world title again, well, it’s amazing. It’s weird but I feel better now than I ever have. Ten years after I was world champion, 16 years after I made my pro debut (Oct. 3, 1992), I want it (world title) more and appreciate boxing more than ever. I love everything about boxing.”

The 10-round co-feature on the PPV show from Germany has former NABO champion Otis “Triple OG” Griffin (19-3-2, 7 KOs), of Sacramento, taking on Yugoslavian-born Enad Licina (14-1, 8 KOs), now living in Germany, for the vacant IBF Intercontinental cruiserweight belt. Additional undercard bouts to be part of the PPV card will soon be announced.
