NEW YORK– For two, unproven, but talented prospects, the New Year brings a dangerous challenge that will test their ring smarts, skills, mental toughness and unbeaten records.
Leonilo Miranda (24-0, 23 KOs), a featherweight from Mexico, will aim for another knockout victory when he faces fellow unbeaten Orlando Cruz (15-0-1, 6 KOs) of Puerto Rico, in a 10-round featherweight bout on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, live on ShoBox: The New Generation (SHOWTIME 11 p.m. E/PT, delayed on the West Coast).
Both prospects are southpaws and both are making their American television debut. “ShoBox is in large part about giving young talented, unknown and untested fighters opportunities to take center stage,” said Gordon Hall, Executive Producer of the acclaimed SHOWTIME Sports series, ShoBox. “Miranda and Cruz will be fighting, to live up to lofty expectations and to keep their undefeated records intact. They are unproven and untested until they fight on ShoBox.”
Miranda, who supports his boxing career by working as a full-time fisherman in Mexico, finds himself outside the friendly confines of his home state of Sonora for the first time.
“There’s going to be some pressure on Miranda to perform well because this is his first fight in the U.S. and it’s on SHOWTIME so this is a big deal for him,” said Julio Marines of Marines Promotions, the company that co-promotes Miranda along with Gary Shaw Productions. “We feel he has the right tools and attitude to become a special prizefighter.”
Miranda, a tall lefty with an upright boxing style, is coming off an impressive eighth-round knockout victory over the iron-chinned Cruz Carbajal in July 2008. His precise jab, solid footwork and two-fisted power was on display on that summer night.
“His record is deceiving because his high knockout rate would suggest he is mostly a brawler, but he can box beautifully too,” Marines said. “He uses his jab well and he is a sound technician. He didn’t have much of an amateur career so we’re still developing his boxing skills. Once he puts everything together, he’s going to raise some eyebrows.”
Marines was first turned on to Miranda two years ago when one of his talent scouts tipped him off about a certain, young Mexican fisherman who happened to have power in both mitts.
Miranda, who is fighting for the first time outside of Mexico, is thought of as an unproven prospect. Ranked No. 7 by the WBC at the featherweight division, Miranda will get his shot to show off his impressive power on January 16.
“We are impressed with his sparring,” Marines said of 26 year old Miranda. “He moves real well on his toes. He has good footwork which we didn’t expect. He has an amazing story. Leonilo comes from a family of fishermen. The kid has never been away from home and his mom was brought along so she can cook his meals. I didn’t want him to get homesick.”
Cruz, a 2000 Olympian with over 180 amateur fights, is also a southpaw, and much like Miranda, he is an untested prospect. “I have a lot of experience from my past that I rely on,” said Cruz.
While not a power puncher, Cruz has the ability to outbox his competition. He is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision win over Carlos Guevara in March 2008. Cruz’s manager, Victor Montanez, is confident that he will come out on top. “Orlando looks better than he has ever looked in his life. He is completely mentally and physically prepared,” said Montanez. “We believe that Orlando will put on a beautiful show on January 16.”
Cruz, a proud Puerto Rican, grew up idolizing his 2000 Olympic teammates and fellow countrymen, boxing stalwarts, Miguel Cotto and Ivan Calderon. His manager, Juan De Leon, believes that he will one day follow in their footsteps and see the same success that they have achieved. “With his ability and potential, he will make it to the top. Not only does he deserve to be there for his skills but he has the heart of a champion as well.”
In the co-feature, Marvin Quintero (14-1, 11 KOs) of Mexico will face his toughest test to date against ShoBox alum Nick Casal (18-3-1, 14 KOs) of Chicago, in an eight-round lightweight bout.
The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and will originate from the Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa, Okla.
Nick Charles will call the action from ringside with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Rodriguez graduates Saturday night in Biloxi
WORCESTER, Mass.– Unbeaten middleweight sensation Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, former 2-time national amateur champion, fights Saturday night (January 17) in his first scheduled 8-round bout against Brad Austin on the off-televised HBO undercard, headlined by Andre Berto-Luis Collazo WBC welterweight title fight, at the Beau Rivage Resort Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.
“I’m excited,” Rodriguez said between training sessions about his upcoming match. “I can’t wait to show everyone my talents. It’s another stepping stone towards becoming world champion. The HBO people and a lot of other influential people in boxing will be there and I’m going to showcase my talents.”
The Dominican Republic-born Rodriguez (8-0, 5 KOs) hasn’t fought since August 22, when he won all six rounds versus Marcus Upshaw (8-2), but during that inactive period he often sparred with world title challengers Peter Manfredo, Jr. and Elvin Ayala, as well as Jessie Brinkley. Mississippi will be the fifth different state Edwin’s already fought in as a pro.
“My inactivity won’t be an issue,” Edwin promised. “I was very busy with eight fights in my first year as a pro. I took off a few months but I was constantly in and out of the gym. I’d only been with my trainer, Peter Manfredo, Sr., for about eight months and we needed more time to know each other. I’ve learned a lot from him. I’ll be working inside a lot more. I was getting caught with rights pulling away with my chin up. That was a bad amateur habit we had to clean up.
“We’re fighting at 168 pounds but, I’m 6-0 feet tall and can fight at 168 or 160. I’m capable of winning at either weight, but my first goal is to be middleweight champ of the world. Eventually, I’ll probably fight as a super middleweight, but right now I’m fighting this one at 168 and then coming back down to 160.”
Austin (8-5, 2 KOs), fighting out of Tennessee, figures to be a solid test for Rodriguez, largely due to his experience fighting top prospects such as Carlos DeLeon, Jr., James McGirt, Jr. and Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillon.
“Last year was great for Edwin,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army noted. “We decided as a team for Edwin to take off four months to review his fights and hone his skills. We’re thrilled that Edwin is starting 2009 on such a high profile card, his first on an HBO or world title fight undercard. He’s going to learn a lot from this experience, which will help him develop even more. Daniel Santos to Defend WBA Crown Against Interim Champion Sergio Martinez; Smashing HBO-Televised Tripleheader on Feb. 14
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—Daniel Santos will make his first defense of the World Boxing Association super welterweight championship he won in July when he faces interim World Boxing Council super welterweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez on Feb. 14.

The addition of the Santos-Martinez world championship to the previously announced HBO-televised card promoted by Don King Productions makes for a smashing tripleheader. The event already features World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) opposing his IBF No. 1-Ranked mandatory challenger Ali “Rush Hour” Funeka as well as another intriguing 154-pound pairing of former three-time world champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (28-7-1, 22 KOs) and undefeated WBC No. 3-ranked Alfredo “Perro” Angulo squaring off in a World Boxing Council elimination bout to determine the No. 1 ranking and become mandatory challenger.
On Monday, Santos (32-3-1, 23 KOs) was offered the opportunity to step in to replace Joe Greene, who had been scheduled to face Martinez (44-1-1, 24 KOs) in the HBO-televised co-feature being presented on Jan. 17 with Andre Berto vs. Luis Collazo in the main event from Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Miss. Greene pulled out due to a kidney stone ailment.
Santos’s attorney Gabriel Penagaricano advised Don King Productions that 10 days was not enough time for Santos to adequately train and prepare to make a Jan. 17 appearance.
“I couldn’t have agreed more with Gabriel for not taking that fight on such short notice,” King said, “but I had an obligation to run it by him. Danny has worked hard to gain another world title, and even though Gabriel had just corresponded with me to advise of Danny’s desire to return to the ring, 10 days of preparation was not adequate. I am delighted we can move the same fight to Feb. 14 in order to give Danny the time he needs to be ready.”
Boxing fans can rejoice in knowing they’ll have the opportunity to see the return of crowd favorite Nate Campbell risking both of his lightweight world championships in a unification match and also a decisive night in the 154-pound division with a world championship and an elimination bout.

BERNARD HOPKINS HIRED BY ESPN AS
Bristol, CT- Future Hall of Fame middleweight and light heavyweight great Bernard Hopkins has been hired by ESPN as a "boxing analyst" for the 2009 season of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights. Hopkins, who will make a series of regular appearances on the show, will handle his first assignment tonight alongside ESPN longtime host Brian Kenny for the FNF season debut featuring Cuban rising stars Yuriorkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solis and Erislandy Lara from Terrible's Primm Valley Casino Resorts in Primm, Nevada.
Hopkins will make regular appearances on the show and is excited to work with Kenny to hone his broadcasting skills.
"We anticipate that Bernard will add an entertaining and knowledgeable element to our Friday Night Fights coverage," said Matt Sandulli, ESPN senior coordinating producer for Friday Night Fights.

Former Boxer Mitchell Rose Releases Barack Obama Sneakers
January 20th 2009 will go down as an important day in American history where Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the country’s first African American President. Former pro boxer Mitchell Rose not only voted for Obama but strongly supports him. “Like me, Barack Obama is a fighter who supports change” said Rose, who will be in D.C. for the inauguration.Shortly after President George W Bush was almost literarily hit with a shoe in Iraq, Rose plans to hit the market with his own pair. Rose will be selling Barack Obama sneakers which were created for fans to honor our new President. The sneakers are available in black and white as well have the number 44 on the tongue in honor of our 44th President. The sneakers also have his smiling face on the ankle and “Obama” written on the heel. “Obama’s smiling face can literarily be seen a city block away because my sneaker glows in the dark “mentioned Rose, who first gained fame after knocking out popular boxer Butterbean.
Rose’s ultimate goal is to change the sneaker business as a lot of Americans, specifically minorities wear Nikes. Rose however is upset that he has never heard about Nike doing something positive for the urban community. “I have never heard of them building a recreation facility or anything like that”, exclaimed Rose. “I say lets change the sneaker industry with the Obamas".
Ten percent of the total proceeds from the Barack Obama sneakers will go to the National Action Network, a nonprofit civil rights organization in which Al Sharpton is involved with. Their motto is “No Peace No Justice”. “Al Sharpton is one of the few leaders who hast fought for minority rights for over two decades”, said Rose. “He is one of the only people who have the courage to stand up to the police when they are violent toward minorities. We also share the same lawyer Sanford Rubenstein”, continued Rose.
Rose also wrote a book called “Mike Tyson Tried to Kill My Daddy to raise awareness of the problems people who are from the streets face on a daily basis. His book also discusses Surveilivision and the James Davis Reward Fund which are two programs he will make official soon that will help financial and criminal problems in the urban communities. “These are great projects I’m working on that can help out the community in a short amount of time” said Rose, who also sells sneakers as well as playing cards of boxing legend Mike Tyson.

Andy Murray targeting boxing’s Grand Slam
Brian Peters believes that the name Andy Murray is going to become very familiar to sports fans this year – and he’s not talking about the Tennis player. Irish boxing has it’s own rising star in Cavan’s Andy Murray and having just signed a managerial deal with Peters his new manager believes he can be Ireland’s next big boxing hero.
The 3 time Irish Senior amateur champ turned professional in 2005 and remains undefeated having so far racked up 16 straight wins while hardly losing a round and claiming Irish titles at both lightweight and light welterweight.
However he’s also had to endure frustrating periods of inactivity but Peters is promising to keep him busy as he guides him towards a European and even World titles.
“Andy’s an exceptionally talented fighter but he has all the other attributes as well to make it to the very top,” enthused Peters. “He’s very marketable, he’s level headed, he has a great work ethic and he’s very focused on what he wants to achieve in boxing.
“His career has been a slow burning one to date but I believe he will really take off this year. His last win for the Irish lightweight title was very impressive. He won every round in that fight and McDonagh has gone on to have a couple of good wins since then.”
On turning pro Murray had signed with London based manager Michael Helliet but a lack of opportunities on the U.K. scene led Murray to return home. Peters said, “Mickey is a good boxing man but things just didn’t work out for Andy in England and with the pro scene buzzing here at the moment it makes sense for him to be based here.
“He’ll train up in Belfast at John Breen’s gym and that gym is really on a high with guys like Paul McCloskey, Martin Rogan and Stephen Haughian having had such a good 2008.”
Murray is delighted to have signed terms with Peters and believes it will prove the key to him fulfilling his undoubted potential.
“It was a very easy decision to make signing with Brian,” said Murray. “You only have to look at what he’s done for professional boxing in Ireland in the last few years and the job he’s done with people like Bernard Dunne, Paul McCloskey and others. Even last year when I wasn’t under contract with him he kept me busy with fights and it was great to get some TV exposure as well.”
While Peters begins working on the medium and long term goals of European and World titles Murray is happy to take it one fight at a time. “I just want to keep stepping up each and every time until I’m ready for those big fights. I know I’m not the finished article yet and you want to learn from each and every fight but I’ve no doubt Brian will deliver those fights for me and then when the chance at a major title comes along I’ll be ready for it.
Murray’s first outing under the new arrangement will come on February 7th when he features on Stephen Haughian: The Homecoming card at the Craigavon Leisure Centre with Peters planning on keeping him busy throughout 2009 and delivering some significant opportunities.
“Andy’s fight on February 7th should shake off any ring rust he’ll have and allow him to get an understanding with his new trainers, John Breen and Eamonn Magee. After that we’ll be looking to step up the level of competition and start directing him towards the European title. I have no doubt that Andy is capable of becoming European champion and once he’s at that level the world’s his oyster.”

GUS JOHNSON JOINS SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING AS HOST AND PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER;Longtime Host Steve Albert Will Have a Continuing Role on the Series
NEW YORK- Dynamic play-by-play broadcast veteran Gus Johnson of CBS Sports signed with Showtime Networks Inc. to host and call the action on the premium network’s flagship sports series SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, it was announced today by Ken Hershman, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming.
Johnson replaces Steve Albert, who has served as the play-by-play voice of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING since 1987. Johnson will work alongside color analyst Al Bernstein on the monthly series.
"SHOWTIME has been on fire for several years—televising some of the most important and evenly matched world title fights in boxing, breaking ground by televising mixed martial arts and adding INSIDE THE NFL to the line up," said Johnson, who has called boxing for CBS Sports and Madison Square Garden Network. "I am thrilled to join the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING team. And as a division of CBS, my work with SHOWTIME will be complementary to that of CBS Sports.”
Johnson will make his SHOWTIME debut on the first SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast of 2009 – live on Feb. 7 (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) – when the hard-hitting and outspoken Super Flyweight World Champion Vic Darchinyan faces dangerous Mexican champion Jorge Arce, in what is expected to be a thrilling, all-action title fight.
“Gus brings incredible energy and a fresh approach to every broadcast,” said Hershman. “He has the ability to match the intensity of the moment and there are few moments in sports more intense than a hard-fought boxing match. Gus and SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING are the perfect match.”
Albert, who will remain with SHOWTIME Sports and fill in for Johnson when his CBS Sports schedule conflicts, said: “I never imagined that when I called my first fight on SHOWTIME back in 1987 that I‘d still be announcing boxing today. But after 21 years at SHOWTIME, 25 years all told in the sport, I thought it was finally time to pull back. I am happy to remain a part of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING and also excited to be in the process of pursuing other interests.”
Johnson has served CBS Sports as play-by-play announcer for its coverage of the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship since 1995, the National Football League since 1998 and CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS in 2008, among others. He will continue as an active member of the CBS Sports broadcast team.
Johnson is a practicing mixed martial artist who studies Shing Yi Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and boxing.
“Having worked with the likes of Gil Clancy, Tony Paige and Steve Farhood, calling the New York City Golden Gloves and the Broadway Boxing series has prepared me for this tremendous opportunity with SHOWTIME,” said Johnson. “And to work alongside Al Bernstein will be a tremendous honor. I have admired Al’s work for so many years dating back to his time at ESPN. He is a boxing historian, a boxing purist and a true fan. Above all, he is a great broadcaster. Johnson also calls college basketball games on the Big 10 Network and has called play-by-play for the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, Big East Basketball on the Big East Network, college basketball on ESPN and the Canadian Football League on ESPN2. Homecoming for Haughian
Stephen Haughian believes he’s ready to start chasing down major titles in 2009. The Co. Armagh boxer will look to take his career to the next level when he headlines a first ever pro fight night at the Craigavon Leisure Centre on Saturday, February 7th.
The Lurgan welterweight who trains out of John Breen’s Gym in Belfast is hoping to enjoy the same success in 2009 that gym mates Paul McCloskey and Martin Rogan enjoyed last year. Both ended 2008 on a high with McCloskey claiming the British Light Welterweight title and Rogan ending any remaining World title aspirations that Audley Harrison might have had.
“They say success breeds success and I certainly think that’s the case in the gym at the minute,” said Haughian. “Paul had a terrific win over Colin Lynes at short notice and I always fancied Martin to beat Harrison because of his attitude.
“He just loves a challenge and everyone in the gym is the same. The two lads are proof that is you put the work in the rewards can come your way so they’ve definitely been an inspiration to me.”
Haughian has compiled an impressive record of 16 wins from his 17 outings since turning professional in 2005. The sole blemish on his record remains a controversial points defeat to Giammario Grassellini for the IBF Intercontinental title at the Kings Hall in Belfast just over a year ago.
Haughian however reversed that result last time out by outpointing his Italian rival decisively on a Bernard Dunne undercard in November. Despite only recently turning 24Haughian now feels he’s ready for the best in Britian.
“I’d like to think this year will be a big one for me. Obviously it’s getting off to the best possible start with me headlining my own show and after that I’ll be looking for an Irish or Celtic title. After that I’d love a crack at either the British or Commonwealth titles.”
Haughian’s promoter Brian Peters is confident of delivering those opportunities. “Stephen’s the mandatory challenger for the Celtic title so hopefully we can make that happen in the next few months. I’ve made repeated attempts to get Billy Walsh to defend his Irish welterweight title against Stephen but he’s obviously not interested. He’s been talking ridiculous money for an Irish title fight but I think he’s pricing himself out of the fight deliberately because he knows Stephen would be far too much for him.”
“Obviously the Irish title is something that Stephen would love to win but if we can’t make that fight then we’ll move on to the Celtic title and hopefully a British or Commonwealth title opportunity later in the year.”
Haughian’s trainer John Breen believes that his charge is more than capable of matching the achievements of his gym mates. “I’ve been saying for a long time that Stephen’s my secret weapon. He goes about his business quietly but I see him in the gym day in and day out and I believe he has the potential to be as good a fighter as I’ve ever worked with. I don’t see anyone out there in Britain to trouble him.”
Haughian’s February 7th date is essentially a hometown appearance for the Lurgan native and he says all his sacrifices over Christmas will be worthwhile for the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of his own supporters.
“I only live a few miles from the venue so it will be as good as having the fight in my back garden. I’ve been training hard all over Christmas and there’s already a bit of a buzz around the place about it. Everyone’s really looking forward to it. The love their boxing here and when I fought in Lurgan a few years back the venue was too small and they actually had to turn people away at the door.
“My Dad runs the Phoenix amateur boxing club here and his shows are always packed as well so I think there going to be a great atmosphere next month. People can’t get enough of boxing here.
An action packed undercard will feature a host of Irish boxing’s finest talent. Former World title challenger and British Champion, Neil Sinclair will be looking to showcase his feared punching power while unbeaten Michael Kelly will be returning after a break of almost 3 years.
Undefeated in 6 pro starts the former Irish amateur champ says he’s hungrier than ever and wants to emulate the pro success of former amateur rival, Paul McCloskey.
Another man hungry for titles is Belfast’s Kevin O’Hara. By his own admission O’Hara’s career has yet to live up to expectations but with 14 wins from his 18 starts “Sweet Pea” knows that he has solid foundations to launch a fresh bid for titles in 2009.
Also on the card is popular Omagh prospect, Damian Taggart. The Tyrone man has been mentored by the county’s All Ireland winning football manager, Mickey Harte since turning pro just over a year ago and he’s hoping 2009 will be a massive year in his fledgling pro career.

Lauzon headlines “UFC Fight Night” Feb. 7 vs. Franca on national television
E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass.– UFC lightweight sensation Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon fights once again in the main event February 7, headlining “UFC Fight Night” on Spike TV against fellow Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Hermes Franca, live from the Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida.
Lauzon (17-4, 5 KOs, 12 submissions), star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, last headlined April 2, 2008 Joe in disappointing loss by second-round TKO to fellow Massachusetts fighter Kenny Florian on UFC Fight Night 13 in Denver. “J-Lau” bounced right back this past September, registering an impressive second-round stoppage of Kyle Bradley (13-6) on UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Nebraska.
“It’s kind of weird,” Lauzon said, “but I’ve gone from undercard to main event, back to undercard, and now main event again. I’m not complaining at all. This is a huge fight for me, second only to my main event in Denver, which was more personal with both of us (Lauzon and Florian) from Massachusetts.”
Former UFC lightweight title challenger Franca (20-7), fighting out of Juniper, Florida by way of his native Brazil, is a former WEC and AFC champion. His most notable victories to date include a knockout of former UFC lightweight title challenger Caol Uno five years ago and third round submission (arm-bar) Jamie Varner in 2006. In his UFC championship fight in 2007 against Sean Sherck, Franca lost a 5-round decision on UFC 73 - Stacked. In his last action (July 19, 2008), Hermes won a 3-round decision versus Frankie Edgar on UFC Fight Night 14.
“This fight will be different than the one against Florian,” Lauzon promised. “I’m going to push the pace, be more aggressive. He’s a counter-puncher who likes his opponents to come to him. He’s a good defensive fighter, very good in every way. We’re both dangerous. It’s going to be fast-paced, a real dog fight.”

Nakash, 16-0 with twelve knockouts put on his most complete performance in his last bout when he systematically broke down Harvey Jolly over seven rounds on December 5th. It was during that fight that Nakash heard loud cheers from The Blue Horizon crowd and is now solidified as one of the most popular fighters in Philadelphia.
Nakash has a record of 7-0 with four knockouts at The Legendary Blue horizon and has scored seven consecutive stoppages. With a win Nakash could be on the cusp of a world ranking. Nakash’s very formidable opponent will be announced shortly.
In the co-feature, Jr. Welterweight Steve Upsher Chambers will look to extend his unbeaten streak to seventeen as he will take part in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.

Chambers is coming off a solid victory over Ben Ankrah on December 5th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
In that bout, Chambers showed that despite his long length, he could mix it up inside as he consistently outworked Ankrah at close-quarters to pound out the unanimous decision victory.
Chambers, 19-1-1 (1NC) with five knockouts has become a staple at The Legendary Blue Horizon has fought all but one of his fights at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

It has been fourteen months since Elad Shmouel took part on one of the greatest toe-to-toe wars ever inside the confines of Philadelphia and on February 6th; Shmouel will make his long awaited return to the ring
Back on December 7th, 2007, Shmouel and Lenny DeVictoria put on one of the greatest shows in the history of Philadelphia boxing as Shmouel battered and dropped DeVictoria over the first four rounds. It was then where DeVictoria found something deep inside of him and the tide turned as DeVictoria shockingly came back to stop Shmouel in round seven of what Philadelphia fight fans are still calling a classic.
Shmouel, 18-2-1 of Tel Aviv, Israel with nine knockouts has been thinking about that fight for over a year and there have been rumors of a rematch taking place in 2009. In order for that to occur Shmouel must be victorious on February 6th against an opponent to be announced in a six round Jr. Welterweight bout. Unified and Undisputed Hopes for 2009

Suitland Md, December 20, 2008: With the explosion of alphabet boxing associations organizing championship bouts for TV networks, the public has become confused about who the real boxing champions are today, and there is a long standing debate as to whether the multitude of champions in each division are good for boxing in general. They days when identifiable phenoms like Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson attracted millions of fans to boxing are long gone and fans are screaming for a dominant champion like Mike Tyson to re-emerge.
But at no time in boxing history have so many entertaining, but meaningless (at least to the public) fights taken place transferring the championship batton to all comers at a blinding pace and further distorting the public's perception of the real champions in each division as is happening presently. Below is a selective analysis to point out some divisions that should be encouraged to produce a Unified and undisputed champion in 2009 --
CRUISERWEIGHTS (200lbs)
All the hard work by Don King in arranging the Cruiserweight unification contest starting in 2005 was laid to waste by David Haye who seized the title from Jean Marc Mormeck (who had done all the hard work by unifying the titles against Wayne Braithwaite and O’Neil Bell) and promptly dumped all the titles and the division to begin a media hyped run for the heavyweight title like his predecessors before him. His exit destroyed the chances of a recognizable unified champion emerging for the division as the belts splintered again and the very tough and angry Guillermo Jones emerged at the WBA after brutalizing Firat Arslan, Giocobbe Frogmeni emerged at the WBC, and Adamek dethroned Steve Cunningham for the IBF in the best fight of 2008, while the WBO title remains vacant. None of these champions would make much of a headway at heavyweight so they should be forced to fight each other. We are missing the greatest fights of the 21st century by not financing a unification contest in this division, even the TV show the contender picked cruiserweights for its fourth season.
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT (175lbs)
This division is killing itself by recycling the spent Roy Jones, and old workhorses Bernard Hopkins and Glen Johnson. The loquacious Antonio Tarver started the unification campaign by beating Muriqi and Woods for the IBO, and IBF title respectively only to lose it all to the young and aggressive Chad Dawson, who may prove to be the future of the division. Calzaghe’s ranking in the division is meaningless in this assessment because he owns none of the belts and he is only interested in marquee money fights after the financial disaster against last pay day searching Bernard Hopkins. WBO Zsolt Erdei restricts his campaigns to Germany and should be fined for non-exposure to fans stateside, and there is absolutely no buzz around WBC Adrian Diaconu or WBA Hugo Guray. Even if Calzaghe vs. Dawson or Dawson vs. Hopkins could be arranged, the winner would retire before engaging in an unnecessary and cashless event against the other champs. Fans should have Zsolt stripped , or force him to fight Guray, or come out to the US to challenge Dawson who may relinquish his titles rather than fight him for financial reasons (like he did instead of fighting Diaconu), any ideas?
SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT (168lbs)
Unified and Undisputed champ Joe Calzaghe made his successful and long awaited entry up to 175lbs but not before tainting the undefeated record of emerging super star Mikkel Kessler, who rebounded nevertheless to regain the WBA title to stake his claim to being the real champ in the division. However Calzaghe’s exit removed the cover off the snake pit of heavy handed contenders as the dangerous Carl Froch emerged to seize the WBC belt after a war of attrition with Jean Pascal, Dennis Inkin emerged at the WBO and Lucian Bute escaped with his IBF belt after a highly controversial war with Librado Andrade. Europeans can help by forcing Kessler, Froch and Inkin to fight each other to compel North Americans to ship the winner of Bute vs. Andrade to be feasted on by the winner of the Euro contest.
MIDDLEWEIGHTS (160lbs)
Not too long ago Jermaine Taylor seemed to be sinking this division with performance disasters against Spinks and Kasim Ouma, but Pavlik brought back the excitement to the division after beating Taylor to capture and retain the WBO and WBC titles.
Thereafter Pavlik to my dismay made a safe defense and wandered out of the division into his losing misadventure against perennial spoiler Bernard Hopkins, however, this loss may perhaps force him to stay at 160 where he belongs. The next logical fight for Pavlik would be a fight against the IBF's tenacious Arthur Abraham who has repeatedly called him out, and that fight may happen as Pavlik has no other logical money fight scheduled. But, before that fight happens WBA champ Felix Sturm may get the first shot at Abraham to settle certain squabbles between the two. This division is on the verge of unification, but you may be surprised at who finally emerges the undisputed champion.
Light Middleweights (154lbs):
This is the worst division so far, there is no buzz around any of the fighters and to make matters worse you have reigning and interim champs at the WBC and WBO. Nobody wants to fight the awkward WBO interim champ Paul William, except maybe 147 champ Margarito. WBC champ Vernon Forest just recovered from the Sergio Mora upset, the IBF chair is vacant and nobody has heard of WBA Daniel Santos or the WBO’s Sergeii Dzinziruk, who?, I am weary, somebody please take over the drumming
Super Lightweight (140)
IBO titlist Ricky Hatton could be said to be the champ of the division, but he now has WBC Timothy Bradley and WBO champ Kendell Holt to contend with, these champs need Hatton more than he needs them, so they will be calling him out pretty soon hoping he will listen to them. The IBF title is vacant and nobody has heard of the WBA champ, but we can still force Hatton’s hand into a unification contest
WELTERWEIGHTS (147lbs)
In 2007 and 2008 this star studded division was held hostage by the talented Floyd Mayweather who was not interested in unifying the titles; he instead stepped up to 154lbs for a lucrative title fight against De la Hoya instead of tackling Cotto, thereby leaving it up to Margarito who eliminated Cotto and Cintron from unification contention. Andre Berto and Joshua Clottey emerged at the WBC and IBF respectively and a bewildered (by his inability to get a payday against the other titlists) Paul Williams stepped up successfully into the WBO 154 title leaving the WBO 147 title currently vacant. There is no smoke for a unification here, and Margarito is embroiled in a scheduled contest with the tenacious Shane Mosley for his title. The winner will not be interested in any low budget unification fight against the WBC and IBF champs, but would set their sights on the 154 division, with Margarito perhaps looking to avenge his loss to Paul Williams and Shane perhaps looking for a retirement trilogy against 154 champ Vernon Forest. No dominant champ will emerge in 2009 but both Berto and Clottey will make some valiant defenses of their belts to stake claims to being the true champ,
HEAVYWEIGHTS (Unlimited lbs)
Wladimir Klitchko the IBF and WBO champ was slowly emerging as the dominant fighter in the division before his WBC Emeritus champion brother Vitali beat defending champ Sam Peters after a comeback from retirement. Vitali’s victory somehow underscored the weakness of the division that has encouraged even Holyfield to make another title attempt against Nikolay Valuez for the WBA strap. As long as both brothers remain titlists there will be no real unification in the division as they have vowed not to fight each other despite sadistic ploys by the boxing world. Still, both brothers will somehow find a way to remove Chagaev, Valuez or Holyfield from the championship picture in 2009, but hold your breath as either Juan Carlos Gomez, Alexander Povetkin, or David Haye may score an upset against either of the duo to shake up the division yet again. Boxing fans should pray that David “foolhardy” Haye scores the upset against Vitali for he will surely seek to unify against Wladimir to put an end to the disunity plans of the Klitchko brothers. Lightweight (135lbs)
A boxing commission sometimes could stop some bad match-ups fights from happening as Pacquaio would have been compelled to a take a more meaningful unification fight with the triple titled WBA, WBC, and WBO Nate Campbell, instead Pacquaio stepped up to 147 in a winning effort against Oscar de la hoya in a non title fight. But it is unlikely he will come back down to the 135 pound division, so Nate Campbell is left holding the bag with no big money fight despite his accomplishment of unifying the titles. Somebody please set up a unification rewards fund or make Pacquaio sign up for a miracle fight against Campbell.
Super Flyweight (115lbs) -SEE FIGHT PROMO
Kudos to IBF champ Vic Darchinian for brutalizing Christian Mijares to annex the WBA, WBC titles. He is now scheduled to face the tough Jorge Arce, the winner has only to face WBO champ Fernando Montiel to be the undisputed and unified champ in the division. This is perhaps the easiest fight to arrange, but fight fans with contacts at show time must call the execs to make sure it happens.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada
Top U.S. heavyweight in 2009:
PROVIDENCE– 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada, arguably one of the most decorated amateur boxers of the 21st century, is in many ways the United States’ top heavyweight hope to bring home a world title belt.
Estrada possesses the quickest hands and feet in the heavyweight division, along with solid “whiskers,” and he has also shown steady improvement in the power game. All told, though, he’s perceived by many promoters, managers and fighters as too risky to fight, largely because he can box the ears off of anybody in the world who weighs 200 pounds or more.
Estrada (15-1, 3 KOs, 1 NC) won all five of his 2008 fights against opponents with a combined record of 109-24-4 (67 KOs), including former world title challenger Charles Shufford (20-7-1) and multi-regional title-holder Lance “Mount” Whitaker (32-4-1) by 10-round decisions, as well as Derek “The One Man Riot” Bryant (20-4-1, 17 KOs) and Texas State champ Domonic Jenkins (13-8-1) by 8-round decisions, and Carolina champion Moultrie Witherspoon (14-1) by seventh-round technical knockout.
However, finding competitive fights for Jason, who has lost very few rounds during his 4-year pro career, has become a growing problem for his promoter, Jimmy Burchfield. Despite his constant efforts to lure “rated” heavyweights to fight Estrada, Burchfield has been turned down more often than a nerd at the Playboy mansion. A perfect example recently happened when Burchfield’s company, Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., and the Estrada Unit (Jason’s managerial company that includes his father/head trainer Dr. Roland Estrada) agreed to all terms for a WBF heavyweight title fight against Frans Botha in South Africa. While awaiting a signed contract, Burchfield surprisingly discovered that Botha would instead be defending his title against a challenger who sports a 20-15-3 record, Ron Guerrero, who has lost three of his last five, including a first-round knockout loss to Jenkins (aforementioned loser to Estrada by 8-round decision by scores of 79-73 three times) .
“Sooner or later, though, the top heavyweights will to have to fight Jason,” Burchfield commented. ”Like in the days of Vinny Paz, Jason never refuses to fight anybody. He was experienced when he turned pro four years ago because of his vast amateur experience. Heavyweights mature later than other fighters and even though Jason has matured as he’s gotten older, he isn’t anywhere near his potential peak, and will be a dominating heavyweight for years to come.
“Jason has completely dedicated himself to bringing the world title back to the United States. He even opened his own gym (“Big Six Academy”) in Providence to train and teach youngsters. Part of his problem, though, is he makes everything in the ring look so easy. He’s a pure boxer who is learning how to sit on his punches more. The skeptics should be silenced by now, especially those questioning his ability to fight tall heavyweights like the present world champions (7-0 Nicolai Valuev, 6-7 ½ Vitaly Klitschko and 6-6 ½ Wladimir Klitschko). Jason fights his best against taller opponents and everybody saw what he did against (6-8) Lance Whitaker, who came into that fight in the best shape he’s been in for years. Jason Estrada is going to be world champion.”
The 28-year-old Estrada, who is gradually moving up in ratings (WBC #32, NABF #7) has indeed fought anybody and everybody put in the ring with him and none of his opponents had a losing record (260-86-11 combined record of his opponents) when they fought Jason. His only loss was to Travis Walker, who Jason had beaten three times without a loss in the amateurs, by an 8-round majority decision a year ago when Estrada was hampered by a sore shoulder preventing him from effectively throwing his vaunted jab.
Providence-native Estrada compiled an incredible 261-14 record in U.S. competition. He was the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row. Highlights of his amateur career included representing the United States in the 2004 Olympics and capturing a gold medal at the 2003 Pan-American Games.
During his extraordinary amateur career, Estrada defeated some of today’s leading professionals including former world title challenger DaVarryl “The Touch of Sleep” Williamson (25-5, 21 KOs), unbeatens Malik Scott (32-0, 11 KOs) and Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes (29-0-2, 25 KOs), Malcolm “The Showstopper” Tann (23-4, 12 KOs), and Felix “Bad News” Cora, Jr. (19-2-2, 9 KOs).
