No Holds Barred: Dr. Shaka Zulu on the African Origin of Martial Arts‏

Kemet, as he explained in this interview, is the original and indigenous name for what is now called Egypt.
This event takes place this Saturday, February 23, at the National Black Theatre at 2033 5th Avenue between 125th and 126th Streets in Harlem, New York. It will feature a special picture presentation by Dr. Shaka Zulu, live demonstrations in numerous styles and disciplines of the martial arts, a hip-hop dance showcase, holistic health information, and more. All are welcome.
We spoke with Dr. Shaka Zulu by phone Wednesday night, and discussed this event and the African origin of the martial arts and combat sports.
A lot of people, he said in this interview, tend to think of the origins of martial arts "as coming from out of China or Japan." This is historically inaccurate, he said.
"The root of martial arts actually comes from out of Africa, or Nubia, or Kemet."
We discussed the mountain of historical evidence for this analysis, including some of the remaining drawings and artifacts from ancient days, such as the tomb drawings from at least 4000 years ago depicting hundreds of wrestling positions and martial arts techniques. We also discussed the program for the Kemetic Masters of the Martial Arts event, Malcolm X and the martial arts, the need to know the real history of the martial arts including MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, how martial arts and combat sports should promote positive values and not thuggery, and much more.

JAMAAL DAVIS IN ‘MUST WIN’ FIGHT AGAINST PATRICK MAJEWSKI ON FEB. 23 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY

Jamaal Davis, the hard-luck Philadelphian who never seems to win the big one, gets another chance Saturday evening, Feb. 23, when he boxes world-ranked middleweight Patrick Majewski in the scheduled 10-round main event at Bally’s Atlantic City.
Davis, 31, a pro for nine years, has boxed mostly as a junior middleweight, but he steps up to middleweight for this one.
The fight with Majewski marks the fifth time Davis has faced a world-rated opponent. He lost the previous four: Peter Quillen, of New York, Ossie Duran, of Paterson, NJ, Joel Julio, of Colombia, and Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia.
Trying to turn things around in 2012, Davis won his only two fights last year, a pair of eight-round decisions over Eberto Medina, of Newark, NJ, and Doel Carrasquillo, of Lancaster, PA. The win over Medina avenged a previous draw in 2011.
Overall, Davis is 14-8-1, 6 K0s. He is 2-2-1 at Bally’s.
“This is the one I have to win,” said Davis, who is self-managed and trained by Sharron Baker. “I’m at the point where I’ve gotta make something happen and I have no problem at 160 pounds. I’ve had plenty of time to get ready and I’m in good shape. If I beat Majewski, I can jump into the world rankings and make some noise. I’m not interested in being an opponent for the rest of my career. I see other guys stepping in and making money and that’s what I see in my future.”
Majewski, 33, of Somers Point, NJ, is ranked No. 9 in the world by the WBC, No. 15 by the WBO. He has won all of his previous five fights at Bally’s.
In his last fight Sept. 29, Majewski earned a unanimous 10-round decision over another Philadelphian, Latif Mundy, but suffered facial cuts which have kept him on the shelf.
Majewski is managed by Arnold Robbins and trained by Bill Johnson.
Light-heavyweight Chuck Mussachio, of Wildwood, NJ, opposes Lionel Thompson, of Buffalo, NY, in the eight-round semifinal.

DYNAMITE DARGAN READY FOR TEST AGAINST GATEKEEPER RAMESIS GIL February 23rd - The Paramount, Huntington, NY

Undefeated Philly lightweight, Karl "Dynamite" Dargan, 11-0, 6 KOs, is set to jump-start his boxing career when he takes on gatekeeper Ramesis Gil, 8-5-5, 5 KOs, in a 6-round bout at The Paramount, in Huntington, NY, on Saturday, February 23rd.  The bout is on the undercard of a big NBC Sports Network Fight Night card that features undefeated heavyweights Czar Glazkov and Malik Scott in its nationally televised 10-round main event.

All eyes have been on Dynamite since his successful amateur days when he was one of the top American boxers on the international scene.  He filled his trophy case with numerous medals and awards throughout those years, and ever since he turned professional in 2007, hopes have remained high for him to ascend to a professional world championship.

Dynamite fought once last year, but since signing with Main Events he is determined to remain active in 2013 and gain significant ground in the world ratings.  First up is Ramesis Gil.

Dominican-born Gil went unbeaten in his first ten pro bouts before becoming the go-to-guy for testing undefeated prospects.  Gil's last eight starts have been against undefeated risers like Jerry Belmontes, Jorge Maysonet Jr. and Darley Perez.  These tough assignments put a few marks on Gil's record, but they also made him an effective gauge of lightweight talent.  He fell to some of them, but managed to defeat Luis Joel Gonzalez, 9-0-1, and Carney Bowman, 16-0, and drew with an 8-0 Jamie Kavanagh.  This makes Gil a live opponent for Dargan, and capable of pulling the upset at any time.

Dargan said, "Fighting on NBC Sports Network is a tremendous opportunity for me. I am ready for Gil. Training camp was great. Now it's time to fight. There's nothing he can throw at me that I won't be ready for."

Dynamite will have to be fully prepared for Gil and on his toes when the bell rings.  If he can pass this test against Gil, then 2013 may just be the year he fights his way into the world rankings and puts his dream of becoming a world champion back on track.

ABOUT FEBRUARY 23 FIGHTS
The February 23rd card is promoted by Main Events, Star Boxing and Goossen Tutor.  The main event featuring Vyacheslav "Czar" Glazkov vs. Malik Scott, and the co-feature, Chris Algieri vs. Jose "Mangu" Peralta, will be shown live on the NBC Sports Network Fight Night telecast which begins at 10:30 pm ET.

Explosive 6'9" heavyweight contender and former unbeaten, Irish, Commonwealth and British Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, 20-0, 14 KO's, will make his New York debut on Saturday afternoon, April 20th when he takes on former cruiserweight World Champion Steve USS Cunningham, 25-5, 12 KO's, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
This fight is an official IBF Heavyweight Voluntary Eliminator fight for the #2 position between #9, Tyson Fury and #12, Steve Cunningham. The winner will become #2 and must meet #1 or the leading available contender to establish the mandatory challenger for Heavyweight King Wladimir Klitschko. The fight will be broadcast at 4PM ET on NBC as a special 2 hour afternoon presentation of NBC Sports Fight Night.
"Cunningham's got all the tools; a former World Champion, good fighter, he's got a lot of skill. I'm looking to put on a devastating performance; the best of my career to date." said Fury. "I'm absolutely ecstatic to be fighting at Madison Square Garden; it goes back in history and I can't wait to put my name with a long list of Champions who have fought there - I'm a historian of boxing myself so this is definitely the pinnacle of my career so far."
Mick Hennessy, Hennessy Sports CEO, said, "I'm very proud to say that Tyson Fury's American debut is taking place at Madison Square Garden, New York, this is a dream debut in the US for Tyson as this fight is also being shown live on network TV (NBC). It just doesn't get any better than this.

Steve Cunningham is ecstatic, "I'm looking forward to getting back in the ring on April 20th to face Fury. For the first time in my career I have a guy coming to my country to face me. I am certain he's never faced a fighter like me." He added, "What an amazing opportunity to fight in historic Madison Square Garden and return to NBC again. I am prepared to fight a great fight and come out with a victory."

Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO, "Giving Steve the opportunity to fight on NBC again - in a bigger venue for another shot at the #2 position in the IBF - after his controversial decision loss to Tomasz Adamek in December is what Main Events and Fight Nightare all about.' Duva added, "Steve put on a fantastic performance against Adamek and deserves to be rewarded with this fight. We also get to introduce Tyson Fury, a young heavyweight contender, to the American public in a true crossroads match."

KIELCZWESKI & ROSA CARRY NEW ENGLAND BANNER Dib-Gradovich headlines March 1 ESPN FNF at MGM Grand at Foxwoods

The next wave of standout New England boxers, headed by undefeated prospects Ryan "Polish Prince" Kielczweski (15-0, 3 KOs) and Luis "KO King" Rosa Jr. (12-0, 6 KOs), will showcase their talents on March 1, on the undercard of the ESPN Friday Night Fights event, airing live from the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
The ESPN Friday Night Fights card, co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and 50 Cent's SMS Promotions, will air live at 9 p.m. ET. The 12-round main event features International Boxing Federation (IBF) Featherweight Champion Billy "The Kid" Dib (35-1-0-1NC, 21 KOs), who is promoted by 50 Cent, defending his title against undefeated Russian challenger and IBF No. 11-rated Evgeny Gradovich (15-0, 8 KOs).
In the 10-round ESPN FNF co-feature, North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super welterweight champion Willie "The Great" Nelson (19-1-1, 11 KOs) makes his first title defense against Michael "El Magnifico" Medina (26-3-2, 19 KOs). The Nelson-Medina fight is being promoted in association with Rumble Time Promotions.
Kielczweski, fighting out of Quincy (Mass.), and New Haven's (Conn.) Rosa are both scheduled to fight in eight-round fights against opponents to be determined.  They are following in the footsteps of another New Englander and DiBella stable-mate, Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez, of Worcester (Mass.), one of the top super middleweights in the world. In fact, they've fought on several cards headlined by "La Bomba" and each hope that another impressive performance will help to elevate them to heights reached by Rodriguez, now a championship-caliber, top-rated contender.

SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT CHRISTOPHER MARTIN EMBARKS ON HIS “PATH TO GLORY” AND FACES OFF AGAINST JOSE ANGEL BERANZA IN A REMATCH FOR REDEMPTION!

Thompson Boxing Promotions returns to the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario with a double shot of boxing action to open up 2013.

Newly signed Christopher “Marvelous” Martin showcases his super bantamweight talent in the main event on Friday, February 22. Martin faces Mexican veteran Jose Angel Beranza in a fight set for eight rounds for the WBC US super bantamweight vacant title.

It’s a rematch for redemption!

Martin (25-2-3, 8 KOs) has some notable wins on his record such as his 10-round split decision win over Chris Avalos and his knockouts of Robert Guillen and Mexican KO artist Roberto Castañeda last summer. The clever counter-puncher Martin has suddenly discovered his power stroke and needs it against Beranza (35-25-2, 27 KOs) who is the first to defeat Martin. The San Diego prizefighter is anxious to remedy the score.

“When Beranza and I last fought he surprised me with his timing. I expected him to come at me but I ended up having to chase him. He out boxed me and would hit and hold. I got frustrated. This time it’s going to be different. I have been working on sitting down on my punches. I got stoppages in my last two fights and feel confident in my ability to walk away with the win. We’re going to go hard for 8 rounds.

Tickets for “PATH TO GLORY” are priced at $75, $45, and $30. They are available now and may be purchased by calling 714-935-0900.

In the co-main event the lanky San Bernardino destroyer Artemio “King” Reyes Jr. tangles with Tucson’s Rodolfo “Bam Bam” Armenta in a welterweight clash set for eight rounds. Reyes (18-2, 14 KOs) is anxious to reclaim a higher ranking in the welterweight division. He won’t find it a breeze when he faces Arizona’s Armenta (12-9-1, 9 KOs) who has faced some of the best prospects in the division. Reyes’ last win was a blowout of Mexico’s Pipino Cuevas Jr. and he is anxious to make 2013 a great year.

Colombian middleweight standout Alex “El Principe” Theran (10-0, 6 KOs) has an even match up against Hawaii’s Michael Balasi (10-1, 7 KOs) in a six round bout. It’s the southpaw slugger’s first venture into American soil after three consecutive knockout wins in Colombia and he hopes to make a good impression. Balasi is also a southpaw and his only loss was a split decision in the Philippines back in 2006.

Riverside super bantamweight Juan Reyes (8-1-1, 1 KO) returns to the Doubletree Hotel for a fourth time. At the moment, the whirlwind pugilist does not have a contracted opponent but will be in a six round contest.

Others fighting on the February 22nd are Giovanni Santillan (6-0, 4 KOs) vs. Michael Lucero (12-17-2, 4 KOs); Joshua Conley (4-0, 4 KOs) vs. Juan Carlos Rojas (4-4, 4 KOs); and Xavier Montelongo (2-0-1) vs. Pedro Toledo (1-0-1).

Star Boxer Ishe Smith Credits Las Vegas Orthopedic Surgeon for Title Chance Dr. Jedediah W. Jones successfully treated fellow Las Vegas native’s hand injury, and now the fighter to contest IBF Junior Middleweight Championship Feb. 23

Boxer Ishe Smith wouldn’t be climbing into the ring and fighting for the IBF Junior Middleweight World Championship later this month if not for the help of fellow Las Vegas native and resident orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jedediah W. Jones.

“It was Dr. Jones’ care that nurtured me back to health,” said Smith, suffering the serious knuckle injury on his throwing hand during a boxing match in September 2012. “If it wasn’t for his treatment, I would never have had this opportunity. It was a blessing to be able to take this fight because my (knuckle) was in pretty bad shape.”

Smith (24-5, 11 KOs) is attempting to become the first Las Vegas-born fighter to win a world title when he faces current world champion Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage (32-4, 19 KOs) on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit, Mich., on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

It was just a few months ago that Smith’s career was in limbo because of a hand injury. “Sugar Shay” Smith was facing a mandatory six-month medical layoff by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the 34-year-old boxer knew surgery wasn’t an option because he could be out even longer. So Smith turned to fellow Las Vegas native Jones, an orthopedic surgeon in the Hand Surgery Specialists of Nevada, to create a treatment plan that didn’t involve going under the scalpel.
Dr. Jones examined the metacarpal/phalangeal joint on Smith’s middle finger, diagnosing it as a bruised knuckle and a damaged ligament. The injury didn’t require surgery, rather a detailed treatment program to heal it.

“You need to give the body a chance to heal itself,” said Dr. Jones, who consults on wrist, hand and elbow injuries to UNLV athletes. “I know he wanted to get back to fighting, just like an injured firefighter or police officer who wants to get back to work. (Ishe) understood it was going to take some time to fully heal.”

On the surface a bruised knuckle might seem like a minor injury but for boxers the injury is incredibly painful and potentially career threatening. And if not treated properly, it could be a chronic problem.

“It’s an excruciating pain,” Smith said of the injury. “In boxing, our hands are everything. If I can’t throw that punch without pain, I can’t fight.”;

Dr. Jones put a splint on Smith’s finger and laid out a course of treatment. Smith could work on conditioning and shadow boxing but couldn’t land a punch with the injured hand for six weeks. After that period, Smith was allowed to hit a light bag. Although the fighter suffered a minor setback, the injury fully healed. Smith’s recovery took just four months, not the six months or longer some doctors had anticipated.

Smith, who appeared on the original season of the NBC reality show “Contender,” was grateful to once again be pain free. The boxer calls the orthopedist a “caring doctor who listens” and frequently takes to his Twitter account (@IsheSugarShay) to thank Dr. Jones (@DrJedediahJones).

More importantly, Smith has confidence in his hand—and ability—as he’s set for his world title fight.

Dr. Jones will be watching and rooting for the Las Vegas native, knowing the human body’s ability to heal itself and patience is sometimes the best medicine.

“I’m just one part of the team,” Dr. Jones said.
