Big Time - Bernard Dunne's Fight for Glory now online

Big Time - Bernard Dunne's fight for Glory is the acclaimed documentary which goes behind the scenes and features Dunne and his promoter Brian Peters as they travel the road to European title glory is noe available to watch online from the RTÉ website - http://www.rte.ie/sport/other/2008/1230/dunneb_av.html

The documentary covers Dunne’s return home to Ireland following a three year apprenticeship in the U.S. under boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and renowned trainer Freddie Roach.

The Dubliner quickly became a household name in Ireland reeling off a string of impressive victories before challenging for the European title at a sold out Point Theatre in his native city. An emotion charged night saw Dunne become champion of Europe with a career best performance and two successful defences followed.

However Dunne’s world fell apart at the hands of Kiko “La Sensación” Martinez with the Spanish wrecking ball ripping Dunne’s title away in just 86 seconds.

Since then Dunne has picked up the pieces and rebuilt his career with three straight wins as he build toward the ultimate prize – a world title fight in 2009.

“Big Time” tells that story with incredible highs, wounding lows and fearless ambition, all set against the tough and at times cruel backdrop of professional boxing.

Big Time: Bernard Dunne's Fight for Glory is produced for RTÉ by Liberty Films with funding support from Sound & Vision, a Broadcasting Commission of Ireland initiative.

Winky Wright vs Paul Williams

Former World Champion Winky Wright sustained a left hand injury during sparring that causes him to withdraw from his December 4th bout against Michi Munoz. Rumor has it that Winky Wright will return to the ring on HBO on March 14, 2009 against Paul Williams, who holds the WBO interim title at 154 pounds.

Was the so call injury all a publicity stunt to go after Paul Williams? I honestly think many fans including myself have forgotten about Winky Wright, he hasn’t fought since he lost to Bernard Hopkins in July 2007. Do you consider Winky Wright to be a fan favorite?

See you at the Fights.

Holyfield confident of success against Valuev Saturday’s PPV card live from Switzerland

ZURICH, Switzerland- Evander Holyfield is convinced that neither size nor age will matter in Saturday´s showdown with WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev. The 46-year-old challenger is determined to become the oldest heavyweight champion in the history of boxing when he takes on “The Russian Giant” in front of a sellout crowd of 12,500 fans in Zurich, Switzerland. In order to put his name in the record books, though, he needs to defeat the biggest and tallest champion of all time.

“I will display a performance that will surprise many people,” Holyfield said at today´s official press conference. “I have been asked about my age so many times but that is fine. It is not about how old you are. It is about how old you feel and what you can do inside the ring. I am very
experienced and I know what I have to do against Valuev. I am in great shape and I really look forward to Saturday night.”

Valuev-Holyfield is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland’s Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Don King Productions. The broadcast is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports for live viewing at 3 PM/ET – 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN and DISH Network for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. A same night replay will be available at 9:00 PM/ET – 6:00 PM/PT. Award-winning announcers Nick Charles and Al Bernstein will call all of the action.

Valuev will make his second appearance in Switzerland after stopping Jameel McCline in the third round of their meeting in January 2007. “It is great to be back in Switzerland,” Valuev said. “It is a great country and the people are very nice. It is something very special to fight an accomplished champion such as Evander Holyfield. He is a living legend and I am full of respect for him. However, once you are inside the ring, neither names nor titles, matter any more. I have trained very well and I will put on a good performance on Saturday night.”

Manager Wilfried Sauerland admitted the showdown will be one of the biggest fights he has ever staged. “This is a very special bout,” he said. “Holyfield has been heavyweight champion four times. He faces the biggest champion of all time. It is a clash of the superlatives.”

Philippe Huber, CEO of co-organizers Kentaro, believes that Saturday´s clash will help to put Switzerland on the world boxing map. “We are keen to establish Switzerland as a top venue for great boxing fights,” he said. “This is truly an outstanding event.”

A relaxed Holyfield also happily answered questions that were not related to boxing. A curious reporter wanted to know whether he really lived in a house with more than 100 rooms. “Yes, that is true,” Holyfield said. “I have been blessed and I am very thankful for my lifestyle. I have worked very hard for it and that is what I will do on Saturday night: Work hard to win the title.”

Asked about how many rooms his house in Russia has, Valuev smiled and answered. “My new house is not finished yet. These kinds of things take a little longer in Russia.”

Also on PPV is an 8-round super middleweight bout between Danish southpaw Mads “Golden Boy” Larsen (50-2, 37 KOs), former IBO title-holder, and 5-time world kickboxing and Thai boxing champion, Roberto Cocco (9-2, 5 KOs), from Italy.

Highlights from some other fights on the card, time permitting, may be shown including a 12-round co-feature matching two undefeated heavyweights, German-based, Italian-born southpaw Francesco Pianeta (17-0, 11 KOs) defending his European heavyweight title against French challenger Johann Duhaupas (17-0, 10 KOs); former New York Knicks dancer Eileen “The Hawaiian Mongoose” Olszewski (5-2-1, 0 KOs) defending her WIBA flyweight title against undefeated German favorite Nadia Raoul (9-0, 3 KOs); heavyweight Oleg Platov (26-1, 22 KOs) versus Jason Gavern (15-4-3, 8 KOs), cruiserweights Jimmy Kapanov (8-0, 5 KOs) and Paolo Ferrara (25-13-1, 7 KOs); heavyweight Timor Ibragimov (24-2-1, 13 KOs) vs. TBA.

Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson

If you ask Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson, he would tell you he’d fight anyone that you put in front of him, and he wouldn’t be lying. Since first turning pro on February 13, 2003, the Star Boxing prospect has been telling anyone who would listen he was destined to become the next great heavyweight champion. Now 21 wins later against 0 defeats, Johnson is willing to put everything on the line, including a very good friendship, by challenging fellow American heavyweight hopeful Chris “Nightmare” Arreola (26-0 with 23 KOs). Arreola last fought on November 29th on HBO against Travis Walker (28-2-1, 22KO) stopping Walker in the third round.

Johnson’s promoter, Star Boxing CEO Joe DeGuardia said, “We think that Kevin is the best heavyweight in the world. On the other hand, Chris thinks he is the best and has his people telling him the same thing. Depending on who you talk to in the industry, one person will say Kevin is the best, another will say Chris is. So let’s decide who actually is the best and have these two great heavyweight prospects fight each other, plain and simple,” said “It would be a great fight for the fans, a great fight for the heavyweight division and a great fight for the U.S. The winner clearly cements themselves as THE best American heavyweight… and THE rightful challenger to the heavyweight champions out there.”

See you at the Fights.

Leave Shane Mosley Alone

The World Boxing Council has begun an investigation of Shane Mosley in the wake of the recent publication of Mosley’s sworn testimony that he used BALCO’s potent and highly controlled performance-enhancing drugs in the lead-up to a 2003 fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

“It was a real surprise to read that Mosley has confessed that he did take those medicines, those drugs that are totally prohibited by the WBC,” said Jose Sulaiman, the WBC’s president. “The WBC rules state that we must have a hearing. This is a matter of serious concern to us.”

About three months after Mosley won a WBC junior middleweight title in that 2003 fight, he sat before a grand jury describing the potent regimen of steroids and EPO he had used for his training. The Daily News published portions of his testimony earlier this month, along with doping calendars.

Mosley has maintained that he did not know the drugs he was taking were banned or illegal.

Monday, Sulaiman directed his group’s legal counsel to gather evidence on the Mosley matter and put it before the WBC’s 29-member board of governors, which can then vote on sanctions. The rules allow the organization to issue disqualifications or severe fines, even after a fight has concluded.

“Thus far the WBC has seen only press reports, and must therefore investigate any available evidence and review it, in terms of the WBC rules and regulations’ anti-doping provisions” said the WBC’s legal counsel, Robert Lenhardt.

Lenhardt’s efforts will coincide with a hearing, scheduled for Jan. 15, in an old defamation case that Mosley brought in federal court in California in the spring against BALCO founder Victor Conte. The suit was dropped by Mosley in August and immediately refiled in New York state court.

The California defamation suit claims that Conte told newspapers, including The News, that Conte watched as Mosley injected himself with EPO and that he knew what he was using. Conte’s lawyers have filed a motion seeking attorney’s fees and sanctions in that case, which they called an “abusive and meritless action.”

They invoked California’s laws designed to protect plaintiffs from meritless lawsuits meant to silence public participants. Mosley’s lawyer, Judd Burstein, filed a cross motion asking for attorney’s fees and costs in defending Conte’s motion. When contacted by The News Monday night, Burstein cut short an attempt to ask him about the WBC investigation.

Conte, who is in possession of the grand jury transcripts because he was an original defendant in the BALCO prosecution, told The News Monday night that he is “more than willing to cooperate with any investigation of Shane Mosley’s use of performance-enhancing drugs.”

I just hope they leave Shane Mosley alone till after the fight against Antonio Margarito. I don’t want Mosley to say “I lost to Margarito because I was not focus, thanks to the World Boxing Council.”

David Haye vs Vitali Klitschko

The Men’s Health website just release a picture of the British boxer David Haye holding Vitali’s brother Wladimir Klitschko’s severed head. It’s gory. It’s deliberately provocative. And like most boxing trash-talk, it’s also (I think) quite funny. But when Haye’s team tossed a copy of the issue at Vitali in a German restaurant, he reportedly went beserk, grabbing Haye by the collar and vowing brutal revenge.

David Haye has enraged the Ukrainian heavyweight Vitali Klitschko so much that he has agreed to fight Haye in June, probably for a world title.

The Ukrainian was later reported to have said: “It is difficult to describe my feelings. There is David Haye on the photo laughing with the head of my brother… he overstepped the mark. He must pay for this photo… I will enter the ring with a cold heart.”

Between them, the Klitschko brothers hold three of the four available world heavyweight titles. Haye wants them all, and has been agitating for a fight with either brother for the last 12 months, despite the fact that they are champions of long-standing, whereas Haye has fought only one proper bout at heavyweight since becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion in March this year.

This was the key to riling one of the Klitschkos into fighting him for a title.

As Haye’s publicist said to me yesterday, “Men’s Health could be the first magazine to get a heavyweight title fight going!”

SecondsOut Radio: Johnny Bos Talks Boxing On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman had thepleasure of speaking with one of the most knowledgeable people alivein the sport of boxing, the legendary matchmaker Johnny Bos (*http://myspace.com/snoopbee). Right after the marathon of televised fights on Saturday, December 13,we had a lengthy discussion by telephone about the fights themselves and also numerous pressing issues in boxing. We began with the Yuri Foreman-James Moore junior middleweight fight, won by Foreman by alopsided ten-round unanimous decision (Johnny is Yuri's matchmaker). We also analyzed the Kendall Holt-Demetrius Hopkins, James Toney-Fres Oquendo, Wladimir Klitschko-Hasim Rahman, and Shawn Estrada-Shaun Spaid fights, as well as the Tomasz Adamek-Steve Cunningham and Joseph Agbeko-William Gonzalez fights from Thursday, December 11. Interspersed in our discussion were commentaries on why boxing is killing itself today, why young fighters are not being developed properly, how boxing is more "crooked" today than in the past, whichmajor promoter has a history of putting on the best and most competitive cards, the many obstacles Johnny is trying to overcome to continue working in boxing, and more. Johnny is a one-of-a-kind personality and a genuine throwback to theglory days of boxing, so this interview should stimulate some very lively and absolutely necessary discussion about the fate of the sport and business of boxing. James Toney defeats Fres Oquendo, Andre Ward stops Esteban Camou

Heavyweight James Toney (71-6-3, 43 KOs) won a tactical twelve round split decision over Fres Oquendo (29-4, 18 KOs) on Saturday night at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Camazon, California. Toney prevailed on two cards 115-112, 114-113, while Oquendo was up 116-111 on the third card. Oquendo, who closed the bout stronger, was deducted a point in round eight for a low blow that cost him a draw.

Super middleweight contender Andre Ward (17-0, 12 KOs) was impressive in stopping hard-hitting Esteban Camou (23-5, 19 KOs) in the third round. Ward dictated the pace from the beginning of the fight and outboxed Camou for most of the fight. Ward hurt Camou against the ropes and threw non-stop until referee Pat Russell stepped in and stopped the bout at 2:46. “He was a tough fighter, but I eventually wore him down,” said Ward, who is tentatively scheduled to fight in February in his hometown of Oakland.

Andre Ward (L)

2008 U.S. Olympian Shawn Estrada (2-0, 2 KOs) dropped Shaun Spaid (3-3, 2 KOs) twice before the mismatch was mercifully called off by referee Dr. Lou Moret 47 seconds into the first round.
