PHILADELPHIA— On Monday, the fighters that will compete in two co-features on an championship doubleheader that will take place at The National Guard Armory in Northeast Philadelphia met the media at The Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News building in an anticipation of a championship doubleheader as four title will be on the line when Joey Eye Boxing presents Yusaf Mack taking on Omar Pittman in a ten round Light Heavyweight bout for the NABA & Pennsylvania state Light Heavyweight title.
The co-feature will pit Derek “Pooh” Ennis battling Troy Browning for the Pennsylvania State and USBA Regional Jr. Middleweight crowns.

CES building foundation for 2009 title runs
PROVIDENCE– Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) has promoted eight shows this year in three different states, including four broadcast nationally on ESPN, in order to build a foundation for world and regional title runs by its fighters in 2009.
“I’ve been a boxing promoter for a long time and we know how to build champions here,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield said. “I’ve promoted some great fighters over the years – 5-time world champion Vinny Paz, Ray Oliveira, Scott Pemberton, Gary Balletto and others – but I’ve never had a stronger Team CES, top to bottom, as right now. We have a stable of world and regional title contenders, cagey veterans hoping to make another title run, and a group of very talented prospects. CES has worked hard in 2008 to set the stage for making a lot of noise next year in boxing.”
Leading the charge is NABF cruiserweight champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey, rated No. 4 by the WBC and knocking on the door of a world title shot. Godfrey has had three notable victories by knockout on ESPN against Shaun George, Felix Cora, Jr. and Emmanuel Nwodo in Matt’s most recent fight. Godfrey’s only loss was earlier this year in Germany to unbeaten Rudolf Kraj by 12-round decision in a WBC title eliminator.
Super middleweight Peter “The Pride of Providence” Manfredo, Jr. (31-5, 16 KOs, star of The Contender I, had one world title shot, albeit an abbreviated one against WBO champion Joe Calzaghe that was prematurely stopped by the referee in the third round. WBC rated No. 15 Manfredo, who is co-promoted by CES and Tournament of Contenders, was developed by CES before leaving for The Contender. CES and the Tournament of Contenders are tentatively co-promoting a show November 13 in Providence, headlined by Manfredo versus Sakio Bika, winner of The Contender III, for the IBO title.
While Godfrey and Manfredo are the two CES fighters closest to world titles shots, several other CES fighters are in line for regional championship bouts, including undefeated 22-year-old light featherweight title-holder Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard (15-0, 9 KOs), who already owns the WBC Youth and USNBC title belts. Albert & Duran battle to draw; Ballagou wins IBF Continental title in Big Apple
NEW YORK CITY– Two-time Nigerian Olympian Eromosele “Bad Boy” Albert and Ghana-native Ossie Duran (23-6-1, 9 KOs) fought to a 12-round draw in their IBF Continental Africa light middleweight title bout last night (Tuesday, September 23), headlining an abbreviated “KnockOut Poverty” pro boxing card, presented by Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan.
In the co-feature, former world title challenger “King” Jaffa Ballagou (46-6, 40 KOs), from Togo, won the vacant IBF Continental Africa cruiserweight championship by stopping Manu Ntoh (17-15-1, 10 KOs) in the 11th round.
“KnockOut Poverty” was a landmark event to help fight poverty in Africa. Grammy Award winning, UN Goodwill Ambassador Youssou N’Dour and friends were among the many stars appearing for the historic evening of entertainment, music and boxing. N’Dour and other African musical legends performed between fights with proceeds from the event going to the All For Africa charitable organization.
Albert (21-2-1, 10 KOs) and Duran (23-6-2, 9 KOs), former Commonwealth light middleweight and welterweight champion, fought toe-to-toe for 12 rounds, in which, the judges scored 117-111 for Albert, 116-112 for Duran, and 114-114. The IBF Continental Africa light middleweight title remains vacant.
“We are warriors,” Duran commented after the fight. “You don’t usually see that type of fight. But that was a robbery. I won the fight. He wasn’t scoring; I was all night with my jab.”
Before storming out of the ring Albert rhetorically asked, “How was that fight a draw?”
Ballagou (46-6, 40 KOs) got off the mat in the mat in the opening round to knockdown Ntoh (17-15-1, 10 KOs), from Cameroon, twice in the fourth and 11th rounds before referee Eddie Claudio halted the match at 2:47 of the 11th.
“I felt rusty at first – two years off will do that – but I knew that I’d get him,” Ballagou said after the fight. “I’m looking to fight the best light heavyweights in the world – Antonio Tarver, Roy Jones, Glen Johnson. I need them right now. I’m ready for them and I’ve waited so long.”
The scheduled 12-round IBF Intercontinental Africa light heavyweight title bout between former world title challenger Kingsley Ikeke (24-3, 13 KOs) and Sudan-native Abdullah Ramadan (15-8, 9 KOs) was cancelled because Ramadan was unable to gain entry (visa problems) into the United States from Canada. A four-round bout between pro-debuting light welterweight Issouf Kinda, of Bukini Faso, and Jose Guzman (3-3-1) was cancelled by the ring doctor because Guzman was running a high fever.
Among the dignitaries attending the show were former light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson and IBF bantamweight title-holder Joseph Agbeko.

ShoBox: The New Generation Friday, Oct. 3, Live at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME
NEW YORK– Four undefeated rising stars hope to excite and impress Friday, Oct. 3, on ShoBox: The New Generation when highly touted welterweight prospect “King” James De la Rosa takes on Baltimore’s own Tim “Pit Bull” Coleman, and local favorite Fernando Guerrero battles Pittsburgh middleweight Tyrone “TT” Watson. SHOWTIME will televise both bouts live at 11 p.m. ET/Pt (delayed on the west coast).
The evening will be promoted by Duva Boxing, in association with Cavazos Boxing, Prize Fight Boxing and Baltimore Boxing Club from the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in Salisbury, Maryland.
In the 10-round main event, former World Boxing Council (WBC) youth welterweight champion De la Rosa (17-0, 12 KOs), of Harlingen, Texas, will attempt to knock out his fifth opponent in six fights when he takes on Coleman (14-0-1, three KOs), of Baltimore, Md.
The 10-round middleweight co-feature will pit Salisbury resident and native Dominican Guerrero (9-0, nine KOs) against Watson (7-0, three KOs), of Pittsburgh, Pa.
A tornado of offensive aggression, De la Rosa thrilled his hometown crowd and captured the vacant WBC youth welterweight crown by recording a 10-round unanimous decision (99-91 twice and 97-93) over Francisco Rincon in Harlingen on Feb. 23, 2007.
“I looked great against Rincon,” De la Rosa said. “A lot of boxers were avoiding him because he was viewed as a top prospect. I basically won that fight with speed and boxing skills. It wasn’t even a close fight and the scores reveal that.”
De la Rosa, who will make his first SHOWTIME appearance, believes he has all the tools to make Coleman his 13th knockout victim.
“I’m a devastating puncher with blazing speed,” De la Rosa boasted. “The reason I’ve knocked out so many opponents is because they don’t see the punches. Coleman isn’t going to know he’s knocked out until it is too late.
“It might be better if Coleman doesn’t last because if I don’t knock him out, he’s going to get a brutal beating.”
De la Rosa, whose older brother, Juan, competed in the first season of The Contender, made his own national television splash by scoring a fourth-round technical knockout over James Webb Feb. 29, 2008, on Telefutura. De la Rosa floored his counterpart for the initial time with a punishing left hook to the chin at the end of the first round. Another left hook dropped Webb for the second time and ended matters without a count at 0:43 of the fourth.
Coleman, who will make his first ring appearance in nearly 10 months, suffered a broken right hand in the fifth round of his last bout on Dec. 7, 2007, but bravely battled his way to a 10-round draw (96-95, 95-95 and 94-96) against Martinus Clay. Coleman, the 2007 Beltway Boxing Prospect of the Year, fought nine times last year and will step into the ring for the seventh consecutive time in Maryland.
“I have watched tape of De la Rosa,” said Coleman, who was a sparring partner to Oscar De La Hoya during his training for the Steve Forbes fight in May 2008. “De la Rosa looks like a basic fighter. He’s got a nice record, but he hasn’t fought a lot of quality fighters. I don’t know most of the guys on his ‘knockout list’.”
Coleman, who also will make his SHOWTIME debut, relies on slick counter-punching and a deft defense to confuse opponents.
“It’s going to by my night on October 3,” Coleman said. “De la Rosa is young and doesn’t have great amateur experience. He can fight a little, but I have the better pedigree. He’s a baby in that ring. I’m going to tuck him in and put him to sleep.
“I have no doubt that I’m going to win this fight. I’m here and this is my time to shine. It’s my biggest TV fight to date, so I know I’m going to look good when I win.”
A deadly knockout artist, Guerrero has stopped each of the nine opponents who dared enter the same ring against him, and will fight in his hometown for the first time as a pro. Born in the Dominican Republic, Guerrero moved to the United States when he was eight years old. During a stellar amateur career, Guerrero won the Junior Golden Gloves and International Junior Olympics at age 16, and captured the National Golden Gloves at age 17. In 2007, Guerrero became the U.S. National Amateur Champion at 165 pounds.
Guerrero, who is currently sparring with brothers Anthony and Lamont Peterson, as well as WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams, finds himself in the toughest fight of his young career.
“I don’t like to get in the ring and dance around,” Guerrero said. “I like to give the fans an exciting fight.
“Watson is evasive and has good skills. He will be surprised with my foot and hand speed. If I impose my will, like I’ve done in the past, Watson won’t last very long.”
Watson, of Pittsburgh, by way of Flint, Mich. will make his first appearance in nearly 15 months. In his last outing on July 20, 2007, the undefeated middleweight scored a fourth-round TKO over Kenneth Johnson in Greensboro, N.C.
“I controlled the pace in that fight, “Watson said. “That was key. I’ll try to do the same against Guerrero. We’re both young and hungry, so whoever controls the pace is going to win this fight.
“I don’t want to see a blemish on my record. I like being called undefeated and I expect that to remain the same on October 3.”

Irish themed boxing show scheduled for Philadelphia on Saturday, October 4
Promoter Tom Moran, the former manager of heavyweight titlist Tim Witherspoon and current manager of former world junior middleweight champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma, has announced what he calls “A major Irish boxing show” to be held at the Northeast Philadelphia National Guard Armory on Saturday, October 4.
James Moore, Lennox Blackmoore, and Callum Moore, who is the son of Moore's advisor Barney Moore (no relation), and James's biggest fan.
Headlining the card will be Ouma, 25-5-1 (15 KOS), a native of Uganda who because of his relationship with Moran and several Irish fighters has described himself as being “Black Irish.” Ouma was the subject of a lauded 2008 documentary film called “Kassim the Dream,” which chronicled his life from being a kidnapped child soldier in Uganda to his ultimate defection and rise to world boxing champion.
Fighting in separate 8 round bouts in the co-features are extremely popular junior middleweight James Moore, 16-1 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow who fights out of New York, and middleweight Simon “Slick Fighting Irish” O’Donnell, 6-1 (3 KOS), a native of County Galway who fights out of Philadelphia.
“This is going to be a great New York-Philadelphia Irish boxing celebration,” said Moran, who stressed that once New Yorkers hit the New Jersey Turnpike it is only a 55 minute ride to the fight venue. “This is going to be the biggest night of Irish boxing in Philadelphia since Tommy Loughran fought here in the 1930s. If anyone was at that fight, they are welcome to come to this one and compare.”
Moran is thrilled to be promoting in Northeast Philadelphia, which along with neighboring Bucks County has large Irish and Irish-American communities.
“The Irish have always come out to support their fighters,” Moran said. “In Moore and O’Donnell they will get to see two of the most exciting young prospects in the world. I have always considered Kassim to be an honorary Irishman, so it is going to be a great night.”
“Fighting in Philadelphia will be a thrill for me,” said Moore, the longtime captain of the Irish national amateur team who is trained by Lennox Blackmoore. “The fans there are very enthusiastic, so I am looking forward to putting on a great show and increasing my fan base.”

ART UNDER THE BRIDGE FESTIVAL Last call for artists to display their work. DUMBO ARTS CENTER presents the 12th ART UNDER THE BRIDGE FESTIVAL. September 26-28, 2008. Between 250,000 and 300,000 people are expected to make their way to DUMBO for this exciting weekend. Gleason's Gym will close for boxing training and will open as a gallery on Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28, 2008. The gym will display art of all mediums as long as there is a boxing theme to the art. We will show: paintings, sketches, sculptures, books, pictures and prints. We have limited space left for artist displays. If you are interested in showing your work call the gym at (718) 797- 2872. The gym has paid all expenses and the artist can sell their work with no commission. If you have nothing to display just come and enjoy the Art Under The Bridge Festival.

There will be 10 to 12 exciting bouts featuring Senior, Junior and Master boxers. USABoxingMetro sanctions the bouts, which start at 8:00 PM. Tickets for this event range from $75 to $300. Jim Gray Interview with Antonio Tarver and Chad Dawson
Gray: Antonio you have said that Chad is the future and you’re the now. What gives you the indication that he’s not the ‘now’ and the future as well?
Tarver: Well, I feel like I’m at the top of my game. I just took the IBF title from Clinton Woods. I’m here. I’m the unified champion, four-time light heavyweight champion, twice undisputed. I’ve done it all. I’ve beaten everybody so why wouldn’t I feel like I’m the now and he can be the future?
Gray: Chad do you feel Antonio is way past his prime?
Chad Dawson: Yes, definitely past his prime. Look at his last three performances. They speak for themselves. Just look at Clinton Woods. He can’t even beat a ‘paycheck.’ Clinton Woods didn’t put up a fight…. He came to collect a paycheck.
Gray: By that same token, you didn’t have your best night against Glen Johnson and Antonio didn’t have a problem.
Dawson: Like I said, Glen Johnson came to fight, Chad Dawson came to fight. We had a hell of a fight. I’m here, I’m the future and I’m the now. On October 11, I will prove that point to the whole world.
Gray: How do you think you’ll be able to do that?
Dawson: I am in tremendous shape like I always am. I come into every fight in tremendous shape. There’s nothing that Antonio Tarver does that can throw me off my game plan. He’s slow, he’s old. Come on, look at my last three performances and look at his and tell me who the better fighter is.
Gray: Antonio you’re response to what you’re hearing here from Chad Dawson?
Tarver: I’m listening to a guy that is very naïve, a guy that is very young, obviously, mentally and he’s sadly mistaking. (Many) have come and tried to conquer and have tried to take me out. It has never been done before and it won’t get done on Oct. 11. All this guy is hoping for is that I show up less then prepared. They are looking to roll the dice and get lucky. That’s it, bottom line. But I’m here to tell you, I’m here to put the world on notice that it won’t happen. I’ll have my best performance against Chad Dawson. He’s right about the prediction. It won’t go the distance.
Gray: Antonio, he raises an interesting point. You haven’t looked your best in your last three fights. It looks like there has been a struggle and it looks like age now has affected you. What have you done in the interceding time to change that trend?
Tarver: Do me a favor. Put the camera up close. This is a fighter that has been in this sport for 20 years. Now do the same with Chad Dawson. He’s ten years my youth. The bottom line is I got the secret to the success. I’ve been here. I’m not going anywhere. You will see a display of the sweet science when I technically annihilate Chad Dawson on the 11th.
Gray: Chad, a lot of people say possibly you don’t have the chin and you’ve addressed that in the past. What about your chin and what about taking the big punch from him?
Dawson: I’ve never been knocked out. That’s what I have to say to that. I’ve been down but never been knocked out.
Gray: Do you respect not only what he’s (Tarver) done in the past but where he is now as a fighter?
Dawson: I respect what he’s done in the past but where he is right now as a fighter, you can’t compare that to me. I’m young, I’m fast, I’m strong, I’m in the best shape of my life. Every fight I come in on weight. I never have trouble making weight. Never. I mean that’s a true champion right there. I never have to struggle to make weight because I come in to camp on weight, every camp.
Gray: Why do you feel you’re an underdog and there’s this lack of respect, Antonio?
Tarver: They just don’t understand my game. All I do is win and all I do is be successful but they can’t understand my game. I was underestimated coming out of the Olympics. They never thought I would reach this plateau. As long as we have critics it gives me something to shoot for.
Gray: Chad, when you hear all this, what is your reaction?
Dawson: I believe in my abilities and he believes in his abilities. But, like he said, October 11, somebody is going home with hell, and it’s not going to be me.

HIP-HOP BEFORE THE BLING, written by Darlene Lewis, is an historical journey through the eyes of a young female producer/writer who lived simultaneously in the Bronx and Harlem , New York . This talented artist was deeply influenced by music and film. Joan Guzman Personal Statement
Joan Guzman personal statement regarding his canceled fight against Nate Campbell.
I was wrong and I apologize. There is no one else to blame for me not making the lightweight division weight limit of 135 pounds for my WBO, WBA and IBF title bout against Nate Campbell this past weekend.
No trainer is to blame. No nutritionist is to blame. No manager is to blame. No promoter is to blame. Put the blame on me, Joan Guzman, because I was completely at fault.
My conduct in this important matter was unprofessional.
I rolled the dice by coming in too heavy at the start of my training camp. I was able to get away with this many times before but, at age 32, my body shut down on me with 3.5 pounds to go. My metabolism rejected taking off so many pounds in a short period.
I apologize, first and foremost, to Campbell. I hope he accepts my sincere apology.
I apologize to all the boxing fans, his, mine and fans who just wanted to see two accomplished fighters compete.
I apologize to everyone in my native country, the Dominican Republic, and I am sorry
I let you all down after you have given me years of great support.
I apologize to the Showtime network and hope I can earn their forgiveness over time.
I apologize to the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino and to all the great people of the Biloxi area.
I apologize to Campbell's entire team from co-promoters Don King and Terry Trekas on down.
I certainly apologize to my team starting with Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the entire Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and to my manager, Jose Nunez.
I apologize to other members of my own team all of whom worked so hard.
I apologize to the WBO, to the WBA, to the IBF and to the Mississippi athletic commission.
I learned a lesson, a hard lesson, and I just hope that, in time, I can regain the trust and the confidence of all concerned.

World debut of “Renzo Gracie: Legacy,” and Critically Acclaimed “Kassim The Dream,” along with Classic Films By Director Mark Ciardi, Including Invincible, The Rookie and Miracle, Among First Set Nine Of Titles Announced Today
The inaugural U.S. Sports Film Festival, the most comprehensive sports film festival in United States history, today announced the first series of nine films selected to be screened during the three-day run from October 23-26.
The festival will debut the Mixed Martial Arts documentary “Renzo Gracie: Legacy,” the life story of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu master and the American patriarch of one of the world’s fastest rising sports, as well as “Kassim The Dream,” the story of Ugandan-born boxing world champion Kassim Ouma, a kidnapped child soldier and his struggles to break free and regain his life as a professional athlete, will lead the fight films track for the festival. “Philadelphia is a city whose fans and teams are always battling for recognition, and we felt that the city that gave us ‘Rocky’ and Smokin’ Joe Frazier would really take to a track of new films on MMA and boxing. These two are certainly amongst the most compelling,” said festival founder and president Stephan Hartman. “Given MMA’s rising popularity worldwide and its recent approval for competition in the state of Pennsylvania, the debut of the life story of such a living legend as Renzo Gracie was a perfect fit. We also think the story of Kassim Ouma, both as an athlete and a person, is one that fans will really be blown away by.
It is our pleasure to lead our first series of festival announcements with these two amazing life stories of two incredible fighters.” Other critically-acclaimed films slated to run at the USSFF include “Kickin It,” the Ted Leonsis-produced film about a team of homeless soccer players and their life stories and successes on the pitch; “Run For Your Life,” the true-life story of the man who created the New York City Marathon, Fred Lebow; and “Basketball in the Barrio,” the story of two former University of Texas El Paso basketball players who started a program teaching basketball to the impoverished immigrant children of South El Paso, and the stories of those who used basketball as a tool for fulfillment. Each film will include a series of events involving the stars and makers of the films, who will be on hand to discuss all the elements that went into making these landmarks. Already, nearly 100 films have been submitted for review ranging from the traditional sports to Mixed Martial Arts, Extreme Endurance Racing and even Pin Trading.
The remaining list of 10films, many to be seen on a big screen for the first time, will be released in the coming weeks. The inaugural U.S. Sports Film Festival, the most comprehensive sports film festival in United States history, today announced the first series of nine films selected to be screened during the three-day run from October 23-26.
The festival will debut the Mixed Martial Arts documentary “Renzo Gracie: Legacy,” the life story of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu master and the American patriarch of one of the world’s fastest rising sports, as well as “Kassim The Dream,” the story of Ugandan-born boxing world champion Kassim Ouma, a kidnapped child soldier and his struggles to break free and regain his life as a professional athlete, will lead the fight films track for the festival. “Philadelphia is a city whose fans and teams are always battling for recognition, and we felt that the city that gave us ‘Rocky’ and Smokin’ Joe Frazier would really take to a track of new films on MMA and boxing. These two are certainly amongst the most compelling,” said festival founder and president Stephan Hartman. “Given MMA’s rising popularity worldwide and its recent approval for competition in the state of Pennsylvania, the debut of the life story of such a living legend as Renzo Gracie was a perfect fit. We also think the story of Kassim Ouma, both as an athlete and a person, is one that fans will really be blown away by.
It is our pleasure to lead our first series of festival announcements with these two amazing life stories of two incredible fighters.” Other critically-acclaimed films slated to run at the USSFF include “Kickin It,” the Ted Leonsis-produced film about a team of homeless soccer players and their life stories and successes on the pitch; “Run For Your Life,” the true-life story of the man who created the New York City Marathon, Fred Lebow; and “Basketball in the Barrio,” the story of two former University of Texas El Paso basketball players who started a program teaching basketball to the impoverished immigrant children of South El Paso, and the stories of those who used basketball as a tool for fulfillment. Each film will include a series of events involving the stars and makers of the films, who will be on hand to discuss all the elements that went into making these landmarks. Already, nearly 100 films have been submitted for review ranging from the traditional sports to Mixed Martial Arts, Extreme Endurance Racing and even Pin Trading.
The remaining list of 10films, many to be seen on a big screen for the first time, will be released in the coming weeks. Maloney has selective memory regarding Dunne - Munroe
Bernard Dunne’s manager Brian Peters has accused Rendall Munroe’s promoter Frank Maloney of selective memory over the Londoner’s claim that Dunne is “running scared“ from the current European Super Bantamweight champion.
Yesterday Maloney claimed that he had made a “substantial offer” to Dunne to come to England to challenge Munroe for his old title. However Peters remains puzzled as to why Maloney rejected a career best purse for Munroe to defend his title against Dunne in Ireland.
“I’d like to thank Frank for his offer," said Peters . "However he neglected to mention that the offer I made to him for Rendall to defend against Bernard was more than double their offer and would have been easily the biggest payday of Munroe’s career. So by Frank's rationale I'm sure he'd admit that the offer he rejected, was very, very, substantial.
“Clearly they are not as confident of beating Bernard as they would like people to think - but if they want to use Bernard’s name to get some publicity then that’s ok too. Our offer stands by the way and should Frank wish to take it up he can give me a call. Either way I wish Rendall nothing but the best in his career. I hope the kind of offers that his team are rejecting come around again for him in the future.”
Peters says that if Maloney still has no interest in his offer he will move on with other plans for Dunne. “There are plenty of other options on the table for Bernard. He’s already been European champion and to fight for a World title has always been the ultimate aim and that’s what we’re building to at the moment.”

Team Ruiz counters Sauerland’s attack
LAS VEGAS – Team Ruiz blasted Wilfried Sauerland and his promotional company about derogatory remarks made against two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), after the latter responded to a press release in which Team Ruiz demanded a full videotape of Valuev-Ruiz II to further review for evidence of alleged corrupt practices in their August 30th fight in Berlin.
Team Ruiz’ points of contention included Judge Takeshi Shimakawa improperly keeping a running score during the fight; Ruiz not being credited with a legitimate knockdown when he floored Valuev in the second round; Judge Antonio Requena scoring two rounds even despite WBA instructions that there should be no even rounds scored in championship bouts; most importantly, throughout the fight Valuev’s cornermen received judges’ scoring results as the rounds went on.
“Team Ruiz is not as concerned with media quotes in Sauerland’s hometown newspaper,” Ruiz advisor/attorney Tony Cardinale emphasized, “as they are about quotes from international publications from several years ago like Tim Graham’s Dec. 2, 1999 column regarding the federal criminal charges against the IBF’s Bob Lee, ‘How to get ranked in boxing’ on espn.com: “Two other alleged scenarios involved George Foreman and Axel Schultz. According to the documents, Foreman’s people paid (past IBF president Robert) Lee $100,000 for an exemption to defend his title against the unranked Schulz. Big George got more than he bargained for and sweated out a majority decision. Then Schulz’s management allegedly paid Lee $100,000 to order a rematch. He did, but it never came off.” (Team Ruiz note: Sauerland was Schultz’ management team.) We had a good laugh reading what Team Sauerland said, but we are more concerned about what went on in this fight. We want to review the full, unedited Valuev-Ruiz II videotape to strengthen our position outlined in the original release about the issues.”
PunchStat results of Valuev-Ruiz II revealed that Ruiz connected with nearly twice as many power punches as Valuev, 98-52, and that the 7’ 0”, 318-pound Valuev threw 99jabs compared to Ruiz’ 49. Valuev also instigated 79 “clear” clinches to Ruiz’ 29.
“This wasn’t the amateurs where jabs count as much as power punches,” Cardinale noted. “John had Valuev running around the ring, despite the tremendous difference in their sizes (Ruiz stands 6’ 2” and weighed 239 pounds), when Valuev wasn’t throwing that freakishly long, light hitting jab of his to hold-off John, he was holding and pushing John down.”
Upon review of the full videotape of the fight for review, Team Ruiz indicated that it planned to petition the WBA to rule the bout a no-contest and Valuev be stripped of the WBA title for a blatant violation of WBA rules. Team Ruiz will also seek sanctions against any officials involved in permitting these violations to happen.
