On April 24 at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Junior Middleweight, Kassim Ouma of Kampala, Uganda (26-5-1, 16 KO’s) will take on Troy Browning, of Philadelphia, PA (20-3-1, 8 KO’s) in what promises to be an exciting 10 round boxing match. The fight is the co-feature on a Main Event Boxing Series card that also features a 10 round battle between middleweights, John Duddy, of Derry, Ireland (26-0, 17 KO’s) and Billy Lyell from Warren, OH (18-7, 3 KO’s).
Ouma is no stranger to fighting both in and out of the ring. The engaging Uganda native’s life story was recently portrayed in a documentary which was produced in part by Forest Whitaker. In the film Kassim goes from Ugandan child soldier to world champion boxer. His tale of survival proves that against all odds, one can turn tragedy into inspiration. “Boxing is my therapy”, says Kassim.
Since its initial release the documentary has garnered rave reviews and has received numerous industry awards, including nomination by International Documentary Assoc. for Best Documentary Feature. Recently at the March 29th Ann Arbor Film Festival, “Kassim The Dream” received the Life Force Award, awarded to films of distinction and artistic accomplishment. Shumenov takes on another former world champion May 9 vs. Berrio in Kazakhstan
LAS VEGAS– Two of the most exciting fighters in boxing will battle May 9th when world-rated light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov takes on former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio for the vacant IBA light heavyweight championships, as well as Shumenov’s WBO Asia Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council titles, outdoors at Khadjimukan Stadium in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan.
Shumenov-Berrio will be the 12-round main event on a card presented by KZ Event Productions, Inc., which is owned by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, and based in Las Vegas.
2004 Kazakhstan Olympian sensation Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), the 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, who also holds the PABA light heavyweight belt, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His most notable win was a one-sided victory by 12-round decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108) against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs) last August in Kazakhstan.
Beibut’s last action was an impressive performance in Washington last December against former world title challenger Epifanio “Diamente” Mendoza (28-6-1), who was coming off a controversial loss to former world champion Jeff Lacy, easily winning on points by scores of 100-90, 98-92 and 97-93.
“All of us involved with KZ Event Productions are really looking forward to returning home to fight another world champion, Alejandro Berrio,” Beibut said. “I’ve really enjoyed being on the promotional side but, as we get closer to a fight, I’ll concentrate on training and my brother, Chingis, will handle all of the operations.“I’ve put myself on the fast track to fight the top light heavyweights in the world -- (Roy) Jones, (Glenn) Johnson and (Clinton) Woods, etc. We offered to fight several of these guys but they all turned us down. I want to promote and fight in the United States after the May 9 show. Maybe we can get one of the major networks involved so one of the top light heavyweights will finally agree to fight me. All I am looking for is to fight the very best and to be judged on my ability, not by the number of pro fights I’ve had so far. Look at whom I’ve beaten, not just the number. After Berrio, I’ll be willing to fight anybody in the world. Line them up and I’ll knock them all down.”
Bolivian knockout artist Berrio (28-5, 27 KOs), fighting out of Colombia, has been the distance only once in 33 pro fights, knocking out 27 of 28 victims, stopped in all five of his losses.
Berrio’s resume includes two victories against Robert Stiegltiz, in 2007 for the IBF super middleweight title, Syd Vanderpool and Yusaf Mack. Alejandro lost his IBF belt in 2007 to present holder Lucian Bute.
“Berrio isn’t coming to Kazakhstan just for a payday,” Shumenov noted. “He’s a very dangerous fighter but I am, too. PHOENIX– Two Sovereign Nations Mixed Martial Arts (SNMMA) titles will be on the line Saturday night, April 11 in “Extreme Beatdown” at Apache Gold Casino, located five miles east of Globe in San Carlos, Arizona.
SNMMA links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. SNMMA’s mission is to develop, promote and help regulate mixed-martial-arts in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.
Sponsors include MTX Audio, Respek MMA Fight Gear, Catch 22 Sports Grill, and Hacienda Harley. Highlights of “Extreme Beatdown” will be taped and later shown on HD Net’s Inside MMA Show.
Arizona favorite Yaotzin Meza (11-4-0), fighting out of Phoenix and representing Southwest MMA, battles former Arizona high school wrestler Jamie “The Headhunter” Schmidt (7-2-0), of Denver, in the main event (5 five-minute rounds) for the first SNMMA featherweight title.
In the first SNMMA super heavyweight match (266-pounds or more), local hero Chance “King of the Street” Williams (6-2-0) fights in front of his Globe (AZ) hometown fans against Las Vegas invader Brice Ritani-Coe (2-0-0) in the co-feature (5-five minute rounds).
“We are looking forward to bringing a new brand of MMA to the Phoenix area and Apache Gold Casino,” Extreme Beatdown promoter Jon Hegre said. “We feel fighters should be paid what they are worth and fans deserve good fights. The SNMMA sanctioning body is bringing a nationwide spotlight with these two title fights and we are proud to be associated with them.”
In a special female 112-pound catch-weight attraction, Phoenix’ hybrid MMA/boxing star Elena “Baby Doll” Reid (2-0-0), who is a 2-time world boxing champion with a 19-5-6 (5 KOs) pro record, faces Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson (7-2-0), from Albuquerque.
The first SNMMA champion, heavyweight Chris Tuchscherer (16-1-0), a former 2-time NCAA, Division II All-America wrestler from Fargo (ND), will be in action in a non-title match against an opponent to be determined.

Figueroa plans to put Bailey into checkmate position Friday night on ESPN
NEW YORK – NABF light welterweight champion Frankie “El Gato” Figueroa feels every fight is like a chess match and he plans to put former 2-time world champion Randall Bailey into a checkmate position Friday night on ESPN2 during their scheduled 12-round IBF title eliminator in Memphis.
The winner between IBF No. 3 rated Bailey (38-6, 34 KOs) and No. 6 ranked Figueroa (20-2, 13 KOs) will earn a title shot against IBF champion Juan Urango.
Figueroa, riding a 12-fight win streak dating back to 2004, broke camp today in southern Florida and tomorrow he heads to Memphis. “Bailey’s a big banger who uses a single punch – right hand – to stop most of his opponents,” Figueroa said. “I’m not worried about what he’s bringing, more about what adjustments will be made during the fight. The key is figuring out your opponent and making the key adjustments to win. I’m very confident. I love to fight and this is what I do – fight! Figuring out a fighter and making adjustments in the mix is like playing chess. Both fighters come into the fight with a game plan but adjustments have to be made during the fight. I have to put him into a checkmate position to win the fight and reach my goal of winning a world title. I’m not looking past him, but I have one eye on Urango because that’s what drives me. It’s part of me, part of my goal, to be world champion. I’ve overcome obstacles to reach this point and I need to win this fight to have a shot at winning a world title.”
Also rated No. 11 by the WBC and No. 14 by the WBA, the 30-year-old Puerto Rican-American, born in Spanish Harlem and fighting out of the Bronx, is now handled by Roy Jones, Jr.’s Square Ring Promotions.
“I’m in the best shape of my career,” Figueroa added. “This training camp has been the best due to my manager, Sal LoNano, sending me to Boston for training at Mike Boyle’s for strength and conditioning. Andrade to Face Vitali Tsypko In IBF Elimination Saturday, April 4, 2009 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING—Live at 10:45 p.m. ET/PT
NEW YORK– The overwhelming fan underdog in his last fight in Montreal, Canada--a controversial loss to Lucian Bute--30-year-old Librado Andrade is looking forward to the cheers that will undoubtedly rain down on him Saturday night from the boxing-crazed Bell Centre crowd.
Andrade (27-2, 21 KOs) is ranked No. 3 in the International Boxing Federation super middleweight division and figures to be a favorite when he meets Ukriane’s Vitali Tsypko (22-2, 12 KOs), who is ranked a notch above him at No. 2. The winner becomes the No. 1 contender and Bute’s mandatory challenger.
Saturday’s elimination bout will air on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live at a special time 10:45 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) to accommodate fans watching the conclusion of the 2009 NCAA® Men’s Final Four®. The fight will take place before Timothy Bradley and Kendall Holt unify their respective World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) 140-pound titles.
The 12-round fights are co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc., Thompson Boxing Promotions, Inc., and Gillett Entertainment Group. The Tsypko-Andrade bout is promoted in association with Sauerland Events and Golden Boy Promotions.
SHOWTIME: What do you know about your opponent Vitali Tsypko?
LIBRADO ANDRADE: “The only thing I know and hope is that he doesn’t run too much. If he doesn’t run then I’ll be OK. If I don’t have to chase him all around the ring I’ll be fine. My coach watches tape of all the fighters. I don’t like to do it. I don’t like to know too much. It’s get into my head the weaknesses of my opponents and it can play tricks with your mind.”
SHOWTIME: The Montreal fight fans are very knowledgeable and actually cheered for you when they showed you on the big screen at Lucian Bute’s last fight there. How did you become so big in Montreal?
LIBRADO ANDRADE: “It started with my fight against Otis Grant in 2006 (a seventh-round TKO). I started training in Montreal before the holidays, came back, but have actually been back in Montreal since Jan. 17. I’ve always just been welcomed there. There are boos at times but there are more cheers than there are boos. The fans there just want to see a good fight. They are not going to just go after the hometown fighter. They are such a good crowd. They seem to recognize me all the time whenever I’m out in public.”
SHOWTIME: Are you surprised you are fighting in Montreal and on SHOWTIME again?
LIBRADO ANDRADE: “I’m very, very surprised. I really thought we were going to fight in the Ukraine where Tsypko is from. I was prepared for that. It’s just really a credit to my management team and my promoters at Golden Boy Promotions to get this fight there. They’ve really done a great job with me and given me an opportunity to really get my name out there.”
SHOWTIME: You are from La Habra, Calif., near East Los Angeles and are signed with Golden Boy. Do you speak much with Oscar De La Hoya?
LIBRADO ANDRADE: “We talk from time to time. I’ve trained with him for about two months in the past. We have a good relationship. It’s not like a buddy-buddy relationship. He’s real nice when I have to deal with him but as my promoter he’s basically dealing with my management team.”
SHOWTIME: Did it take a long time to get over your controversial loss to Bute?
LIBRADO ANDRADE: “No, I got over it right away. I accepted it and moved on. They keep saying he made a mistake but I don’t think he did. He fought a good fight. He was beating me the entire fight. I did come out feeling like a winner in that fight. I fought the way I wanted to fight and finished like I wanted to finish but I ran out of time. But I accepted it right away. I can only ask for one more chance to fight him and I think I will get it. I want to fight him to clear up this mess.”
SHOWTIME: “What are some things you like to do outside of the ring when you’re not training or preparing for a fight?
LIBRADO ANDRADE: “I like to just be at home and relax with my family. I just miss home so much. I think about it all the time. I’m going to be moving back to California after this fight to where I started at the La Habra Boxing Club and I can’t wait to get back on a normal schedule and routine like I’m used to.”

Beibut Shumenov‘s KZ Event Productions signs prospect Gayratjon Ahmedov
LAS VEGAS– KZ Event Productions, owned by world-rated light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov and his brother, Chingis, announced today that it has signed unbeaten Uzbekistan light heavyweight prospect Gayratjon Ahmedov to an exclusive promotional deal.
The 30-year-old Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs) was national amateur champion of Uzbekistan in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2001. He was a silver medalist at the Asian Games and bonze medal winner at the 2002 Boxing World Cup in Kazakhstan.
“We’re very excited to add a fighter of Gayratjon’s ability to our growing stable of future champions at KZ Event Productions,” Shumenov said. “He’s a devastating puncher who fans will love when they have an opportunity to watch him fight.”
Ahmedov, who has never fought as a pro outside of Asia and Europe, is scheduled to make his KZ Event debut May 9 on the undercard of an outdoor show, headlined by former Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), at Khadjimukan Stadium in Chimkent, Kazakhstan.
Shumenov, the 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, already holds three championship belts – WBC Asian Boxing Council, WBO Asia Pacific and PABA -- and is rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His most defining victory to date was a one-sided victory by 12-round decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108) against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs) last August in Kazakhstan.

Open Letter from Irish Ropes
After reading some derogatory stories unfairly criticizing Irish Ropes Promotions for canceling its March 16th scheduled “Erin Go Brawl II” pro boxing show at WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden, I am compelled to set the record straight about why we pulled the plug 10 days out and to explain what really happened leading up to the final decision.
First, though, I’d like to offer my condolences to Liam Neeson, and his family, for the loss of his wife. He attended several of the shows we promoted and I met him at many Irish benefits. Liam is a great man.
I’d also like to congratulate Brian Dunne on his great world-title winning performance last weekend and also to his promoter, Brian Peters, and trainer, Harry Hawkins - you reap what you sow! I’d also like to congratulate Mathew Macklin for winning the British middleweight championship, Paul McClosky for successfully defending his British title, and Andy Lee for his good performance.
I am, however, disappointed by what Lee said in newspapers back home about our show being canceled. I had a choice of losing $50,000 by canceling when we did, or to potentially lose $250,000 to go ahead. I was not under any contractual obligation to any of the fighters and chose to take the lesser hit.
The poor economy in New York and back in Ireland played a part in poor advance ticket sales, but the real reason for it was Team Lee. Let’s review the situation leading up to the cancelation. My first call to Manny Steward was for Lee to fight Walid Smichet. He agreed and it was even listed on Boxrec.com. Damien McCann, who is in charge of making deals for Lee, said they would take the fight but not for $30,000. Negotiations went back and forth for a few weeks and we finally agreed on $50,000, $4000 in comps (tickets), plus another $10,000 if the gross gate receipts were more than $425,000.
But then Lee said he wouldn’t fight Smichet because he knew about the animosity between Irish Ropes and John Duddy and he didn’t want to embarrass Duddy by fighting Smichet. Well, as it turned out, fans weren’t interested in buying tickets to watch Lee fight somebody that hadn’t won any of his last eight fights, Antwun Echols, who hasn’t won since 2004 and was knocked out the same night Andy fought in Ireland. Lee ridiculed us for the way we promoted the show and he even trashed the traditional Irish pub we had the press conference at, Jack Dempsey’s, where Gerry Cooney had his press conferences in the old days, as well as John Duddy and James Moore, and even a press conference for a documentary about Billy Collins was held there.
We promoted “Erin Go Brawl II” the same way we promoted any of our shows at Madison Square Garden. People simply weren’t buying tickets to see Lee fight a non-competitive fight against Echols. When I decided to pull the plug on the show, 10 days before the scheduled event, we had sold only 1500 tickets, approximately $130,000 worth, compared to $400,000 at the same time for our previous show (“Erin Go Brawl”) there. Bars that normally sell 300-400 tickets had sold only 20-30 for this one and nobody was going in or calling for tickets. It was inevitable and although I was terribly disappointed, I really didn’t have much of a choice about canceling the show.
Lee goes and talks to papers back home ridiculing me, saying he had to find-out from a third party that the show had been canceled. Within 10 minutes of deciding to cancel the show, I called, in order, the commission (New York State Athletic Commission), Madison Square Garden, (Irish-based boxing promoter) Brian Peters to ask if he could put Andy on his card, and then to Emanuel Steward. I told him the bad news was our show was canceled, but the good news was Andy would be fighting on Peters’ show in Ireland a week later than our show was scheduled. Andy Lee was with Emanuel.
Looking back at what happened, there was also a lot of bitterness about boxing in the Irish community (in New York City) resulting from a very negative article written by Thomas Hauser, of Team Duddy. My hands are tied on the advice of my attorney, but when everything is settled in court, I guarantee you the truth will come out on that subject.
We took the high road and didn’t blast anybody in the media for what’s happened to Irish Ropes Promotions. Too many lies and mistruths have been told, so I felt there was a need to explain everything from our side.

We follow up on the commentaries of the past two weeks on this show by Dr. Margaret Goodman, focusing again on why the March 14 fight between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera should have been stopped far sooner than itwas because of a severe cut on Barrera's forehead due to an accidental head clash in the first round. We discuss the latest findings in the Antonio Margarito-Javier Capetillo hand wrap scandal, where authorities in California have officially revealed that the hand wraps they were attempting to use against Shane Mosley in their January 24 fight contained calcium and sulfur, two key ingredients of plaster of Paris. We explain that while lifetime bans of Margarito and Capetillo might be justified in this case, there is, unfortunately and incredibly, no central body in boxing which has the authority to issuesuch a ban. And we also discuss how the American boxing establishment has let the marquee division in boxing, the heavyweights, slip right through their hands and end up centered in Europe. On the positive side, we preview the important 140-pound title unification fight between WBO champion Kendall Holt (25-2, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Timothy Bradley (23-0, 11 KOs). British Boxer Marianne Marston Strikes Gold With New Sponsorship Deal.

American trained English Super Bantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’Marston, along with various soon to be announced American championship boxers, will be spearheading London based sporting equipment and apparel manufacturer Pugilistic Urban Garments planned assault on the $50 Billion American sporting goods market in 2009 with their pugilistic arts flagship brand P.U.G. Athletic. Marianne, a protégé of former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin’Joe Frazier and Cruiserweight World Champion Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, was previously sponsored by P.U.G. Athletic prior to her moving her training base, from Gleason's Gym (London) near Tower Bridge, to Philadelphia and Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s Gym, where she was under the personal tutelage of the legendary Heavyweight champ and his son Marvis, in February 2008. Marianne’s American adventure soon became a roller coaster ride as shortly after committing herself to being with Smokin’ Joe Frazier, to prepare for her professional debut, the Philadelphia landmark gym closed down. Marianne’s dream looked at an end after just 58 days. Not one to give up so easily Marianne tried out for Percy ‘Buster’ Custusat the “home of champions”, The James Shuler Memorial Gym, in WestPhiladelphia.

Initially working with former Junior Middleweight World Champion Robert ‘Bam Bam’ Hines before switching her day to day training, due to her having difficulties understanding Robert’s strong accent which was causing frustrations between them, to the exceptional female trainer Shar’ron Baker. Around the same time P.U.G. Athletic, who were concentrating on theEuropean sporting goods market, decided not to renew their sponsorshiparrangement as Marianne would be initially competing in America and assuch could not see any benefit to their brand at that time. Just as disaster loomed again for Marianne up steps Cruiserweight KingSteve ‘USS’ Cunningham and his wife and manager Livvy who invited Marianne to be part of Team ‘USS’ Cunningham, opening up a whole new world ofopportunities for her including sessions at training camp with Team ‘USS’Cunningham’s world class coach Anthony Chase and advice from team leader Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and “Trainer of the Year” contender Brother NazeemRichardson in addition to day to day coaching from Shar’ron. Marianne, who returned to England at the beginning of March in order toarrange the visa she requires for her professional debut at the 9th May‘09 Ivan Cohen promoted event in South Philadelphia, met with P.U.G.Athletic boss John Rooney Jnr. when she returned to Gleason’s Gym (London)for some training sessions and a new sponsorship deal was arranged inrecord time. Taking a moment out from her grueling preparations a very pleased Marianne said “I’m so pleased to be working with John (Rooney) and P.U.G. Athletic again. John has always been a great supporter of boxing. He used tosponsor my hero, Joe Calzaghe, and supports other great champions like Ian Napa and Danny Williams. It’s so exciting to be involved in their expansion plans, to say I amproud to be a P.U.G. fighter is an understatement. I’m a great believer in their products. Over the past year I have tried out loads of gloves and couldn’t find any that came close to my old ones. I kept having niggly hand injuries so I got a friend of mine to send me over a new pair of P.U.G.’s late last year and hey presto no more problems. They really dooffer the best hand protection! Whilst I’m enjoying being back in London and training at Gleason’s, I’m really looking forward to getting back to Philly so I can be fullyprepared for my fight. I’m missing everyone at Shulers terribly. I missed Tyson’s (Jamaal’s ‘DaTruth’ Davis) and Eddie’s (‘Fast’ Eddie Chambers) fights and missed evenmore not being there to celebrate their victories with them. I’m also going to miss Gee’s (Culmer) fight this Friday (3rd April). NAGA will be hosting their 2009 World Championship on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5, at the Essex County College in the main gym at 303 University Avenue, in Newark, New Jersey. NAGA will award 100 championship belts in all their divisions, making this event the largest grappling tournament in the world.
In a lengthy interview, we spoke with Kipp about the history and development of NAGA, the 2009 World Championship, the role and future of grappling as a sport, and much more.

Don King Files Protest on Behalf of Marco Antonio Barrera; Promoter Claims Amir Khan Won a ‘Tainted Victory’ Until a Rematch Can Be Held
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—Promoter Don King has filed a protest with the British Boxing Board of Control, World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association on behalf of Marco Antonio Barrera claiming his accidental clash of heads with Amir Khan during the first round of their match should have resulted in the fight being ruled no contest.
The five-time world champion Barrera and rising 22-year-old British star Khan—who had been knocked out in 54 seconds six months earlier and badly needed a win—had barely begun to fight in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,000 at M.E.N Arena on March 14 in Manchester, England, when the two boxers’ heads inadvertently slammed together while trying to land punches.
The accidental meeting of heads occurred during the second minute of the fight, opening a huge gash on the left side of Barrera’s head. The deep scalp cut began to bleed profusely and immediately caused a virtual blood waterfall to spill into Barrera’s left eye.

“Amir Khan is in possession of a tainted victory,” King said. “The referee and doctor should have stopped the fight immediately after that incredible, accidental clash of heads. That they allowed the fight to continue with Barrera competing at a huge disadvantage goes against everything that’s designed to protect the health and safety of boxers, the good of the sport and uphold the traditions emanating from the Marquis of Queensbury rules.”
Under the rules governing the bout, had the fight been stopped prior to the end of the fourth round due to the accidental headbutt, the official ruling would have been no contest requiring an immediate rematch. Barrera’s head cut had been gushing blood that flowed into his eye and impaired his vision from the first round, but referee Dave Parris waited until midway through the pivotal fourth round before asking the ringside physician to inspect the open wound for the first time.
Even though blood was visibly flooding Barrera’s eye during the inspection, literally blinding him, the doctor inexplicably ruled the fight could continue only to recommend the fight be stopped in the following round. The key difference being that the rules then allowed for the fight to go to the judges’ scorecards for a decision, which favored Kahn unanimously. After the fight, Barrera would need 33 stitches to close the massive laceration.
Khan, his promoter Frank Warren and the fight’s referee all hail from England—and almost all of the audience were there to see the Briton face the stiffest test of his career.
The English announcers for the Sky Box Office pay-per-view telecast were vivid in their descriptions during the fight.
“It was a heck of a clash, wasn’t it?” blow-by-blow announcer Ian Darke exclaimed in the first round to expert analyst Jim Watt, a former lightweight world champion. Darke later asked Watt, “What can they do?,” referring to Barrera’s cornermen after round three.
“I don’t know that any cut man can stop that,” Watt replied. “I mean that’s like something you would expect in a road accident. That’s horrendous. It’s long and it’s deep. You saw the impact when the heads clashed. That’s as bad a clash of heads as I have seen in all my years in boxing and the damage, I don’t reckon they can do anything with that.”
Darke concurred, “It’s like trying to stem a flood, really, with handkerchiefs or something, isn’t it?”
Barrera said immediately after the contest that the fight should have been stopped in the first round.
“If I’d have had both my eyes the fight wouldn’t have ended this way,” Barrera said. “I couldn’t see the guy from the first round, the blood was in my eye and I just couldn’t see with it.”
Chief Physician for the Florida Boxing Commission and Vice President of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians Dr. Allan Fields, who inspected Barrera prior to the fight and was in attendance at the match in Manchester, said he believes the inspection by the ringside doctor came woefully late and the contest should have been stopped earlier.
“I question why the officials waited to make this decision until the fifth round,” Fields said in a statement. “Barrera was visibly impaired by an accident for almost four rounds, placing him at unnecessary risk and certainly contributing to his subsequent decision loss.”
King is imploring the BBBC, WBO and WBA to step up and right what he perceives as a wrong.
“Marco Antonio Barrera should not lose any of his position and stature to this travesty of justice,” King added. “He should not be punished for what was beyond his control. He fought like the great Mexican champion he is with valor, courage and honor while those charged with ensuring a level field of competition failed the sport and the fighter greatly. They endangered his health and safety and every other boxer who follows him into the ring hereafter if this error in judgment is not corrected.

This dangerous officiating, if not corrected, leaves a black eye on the sport. This is why I am appealing to Paco Valcarcel at the WBO; Gilberto Mendoza Jr. at the WBA; and everyone at the British Boxing Board of Control to correct this egregious error and order an immediate rematch.”

UNDEFEATED HEAVYWEIGHTS BRETT ROGERS AND ABONGO HUMPHREY TO BATTLE APRIL 11
New York- Heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) forces, Brett “The Grim” Rogers (8-0) and “Abongo” Humphrey (12-0) will put their unbeaten records on the line when they face off on the live SHOWTIME televised portion of Strikeforce’s “Shamrock vs. Diaz” mega-fight card at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, April 11.
“I feel like a new and improved person who’s not just in the sport to be in the sport. I’m in this to take it all the way,” said the 28 year-old Rogers, a 6-foot 5-inch, 265 pound human weapon, whose aggressive, unforgiving style of cage combat has ended each of his eight fights in the first round.
“There’s certain things in that first minute of the fight that people do and they do the same thing in every fight. The last couple of fights, I knew what my opponent was going to do and I just waited for him to do it,” explained Rogers of his calculated approach. “For the most part, I try to be as smart a fighter as I can.”
The majority of fans are familiar with Rogers’s kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu skills, but what they have not yet seen put into play by the Minneapolis native is his background in Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art known for its aggressive striking techniques in close quarter combat.
“The way I see it, I just got to get to the point where I feel comfortable enough to use it,” said Rogers of his Wing Chun skill set. “I don’t know if I’m going to use it this time around but, once I do, it’s gonna be on.”
Humphrey, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., introduced himself to a national audience last year as a contestant on BET’s MMA reality series “Iron Ring” where he was a member of a fight team coached by MMA star, “Mr. International” Shonie Carter, and managed by hip-hop artist and producer Lil’ Jon.
“Some people are under the impression that most of the fighters on the show were push overs, but I fought and defeated some pretty well-known contenders,” said the 31-year-old Humphrey, who stands 5-11 and weighs approximately 245 pounds.
Amongst the fighters Humphrey defeated during his stint on “Iron Ring” were former K-1 USA contender, Jeff “Big Diesel” Ford, and Carlos Moreno, who Humphrey knocked out with a head kick.
“I move more like a 205-pounder than I do a 245. I bring a lot of athleticism and skill into the cage,” Humphrey asserted.
While his birth name is “Ronald,” Humphrey prefers to be addressed as “Abongo,” the name of an African warrior spirit believed to protect a village located in The Republic of Ghana. The moniker was bestowed upon him two and a half years ago after he endured a series of mentally and physically grueling tasks during a rites of passage trip to Africa.
Humphrey’s experience there inspired him to establish a non-profit organization that allows him to introduce other African-Americans to their heritage by bringing them to Africa.
“There’s certain things that are lacking in the black community here and one of them has to do with cultural identity,” explained Humphrey. “Fighting and doing the community work in Africa is something that really drives me and motivates me in life.”
The “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first one under the world championship MMA promotion’s new television agreement with Showtime Networks Inc. The live telecast will feature five fights including a thrilling main event between four-time world champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock (24-9-1) and fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC), contested at a catch weight of 179 pounds.
Strikeforce World Lightweight Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) and superstar “El Nino” Gilbert Melendez (14-2) will revisit their classic five-round battle when they collide in a rematch for the coveted 155-pound title.
Middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will also meet in a featured contest.
Women’s MMA power houses, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) and Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) will slug it out in a 145-pound showdown.
Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Diaz” will air live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) on Saturday, April 11.
