Outside The Ropes With Up-And-Coming Light Middleweight Prospect Bobby Bryant‏

Boxing became a way of life for light middleweight Bobby “The Prodigy” Bryant at an early age, and since the love for the sport has coursed through the 19-year-old’s blood.

Turning pro at the age of 17, Bryant has been active within the squared circle and has put together an unblemished record of 13-0 with 9 KO’s. His heavy hands paired with his ability to put on a show have led him to fighting in the featured bout on the James Toney/Bobby Gunn IBA Heavyweight Title fight.

On April 7 at the Landers Center in Southaven, MS, Bobby Bryant will go to battle with Justin Flanagan (9-2, 5 KO), in what may be Bryant’s toughest test to date.

Bryant attributes his success to his extensive amateur experience and training regime. Ending his amateur career with an impressive record of 112-17, Bryant took gold in the 2007 National Jr. Golden Gloves Championship and silver in 2008.

“All of the amateur fights made me ready and gave me an edge when I turned pro,” said Bryant. “I love being in the ring; and every chance I get to run or train, I take advantage of it. I have been lucky to have such a great training camp and I take every opportunity to train with different camps. Right now I am in the best shape of my life; I’ve been able to go 10-12 rounds of sparring for my 8 round fight. This is my first time being on TV and it’s an honor to be on Fox Sports for the James Toney and Bobby Gunn card. It shows me that I’ve been coming along great in my career.”

From the first day Bobby Bryant wrapped up and put the gloves on, his father John Bryant was in his corner. Under his father and coach’s tutelage, Bobby Bryant stood out as an amateur and has quickly risen through the pro ranks.

Often in boxing you see relatives working in each other’s corners, and unfortunately more often than not you read about the fallouts between them, which typically have a negative effect on a fighter’s career.

Having talked to John and Bobby, it was clear they have established not only a very functional but also a very successful relationship in and out of the ring.

“I’m very proud of him; you see a lot of kids that are great boxers in the amateurs, and they lose their drive and passion and fade out,” said John Bryant. “But Bobby always stayed dedicated and taken it a step further, turning pro and working as hard as he does. It’s been a long road to this point, with all of the traveling through the amateurs, but after all of the years of money and time, it’s all coming back and paying off. When he’s not training he attends college. I always tell him education comes first, and then boxing. He is diligent with everything he does; so many father and son’s in boxing have fall outs, but with us it’s been great all along.”

Although both John and Bobby spoke with utter humility, their determination and drive to win a world title was evident in their voice.

In regards to having his father in his corner, Bobby shared, “Sometimes it’s kind of frustrating. I mean, he always tells me how it is, and if you don’t do it right, you’re going to get bumped on the head. It’s different from having a coach; he’s a father inside and outside of the ring, and he has always pushes me to my most potential.”

The father and son combination has proven to be successful in Bobby’s early career, and in coming weeks “The Prodigy” will look to extend his undefeated win streak.

In his young career Bryant has remained active, fighting consistently each year. “Right now we have three upcoming fights lined up; everything’s looking great. I am hoping to get on a few Showtime or ESPN cards later this year. Whatever comes my way, I am ready for it.”

If Bryant continues to walk through his opponents, he will find himself nearing the top 10 ranks by the end of the year.

When asked if he thinks if he will be fighting for a title by year end, Bryant responded, “I wouldn’t say the end of 2012. Maybe in 2013. We are picking it up, but my career is still young. I know I have a bright future ahead, so why rush it?”

Through his first 13 professional fights Bryant is yet to show any signs of complacency and continues to grow as a fighter.

“My experience as a fighter continues to get better with each round and each fight,” said Bryant. “Each fight the opponent gets harder; my conditioning is great right now, and that makes a huge difference. There is a much different adrenaline level from amateur to pro, and that can wear a guy out. I think I have gotten smarter as a fighter. I’ve learned that it is not necessarily about who the tougher fighter is, but who is more intelligent during the fight.”

The boxing line in the Bryant family doesn’t end with Bobby.

Also appearing on the Toney/Gunn undercard is Bobby’s 17-year-old brother Joey. The Bryant brothers are two of the most successful amateur boxers in the Mid-South. Joey ended his amateur career with a record of 214-16, and was the 2007 95 lb. National Jr. Golden Gloves Champion and 2008 100 lb. National Silver Gloves Champion.

About watching his brother progress in his career, Bobby Bryant said, “Working with my brother and father is a great opportunity. It gives me a chance to spend more time with them, and makes us closer as a family. Most people don’t have that kind of chance to spend with their brother and father, and I love it.”

Bobby Bryant is a young, skilled pugilist with the experience and boxing knowledge of an elder fighter. Inside the ring he is a technical and sound boxer with devastating punching power, while outside he is a humble, respectful and well-spoken teenager working towards a better life

“Lastly I’d like to thank my dad, John Bryant…I really appreciate everything he’s done and doing for me, and my mom Lisa Bryant. I thank them both for everything they’ve done for me.”

World Boxing Champion John ‘The Quietman’ Ruiz Opens full-contact gym in Boston area‏

Two-time World Boxing Association (“WBA”) heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz has opened Quietman Sports Gym, inside of Gold’s Gym in Medford (4000 Mystic Valley Parkway), which is a suburb of Boston and only a few miles from where Ruiz grew-up in Chelsea.

Quietman Sports Gym is a full-contact gym, featuring a boxing ring as well as a cage for MMA, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai fighting. The gym also offers boxing and full-contact fighting classes, personal and semi-private instruction, self defense classes, and white collar boxing. The gym is also available for rentals on Sundays.

Ruiz is the owner and chief boxing instructor. Other instructors include John’s brother, Eddie Ruiz, and Jose “Raul” Sanchez for boxing; Miguel Rivera, MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; Michael Matulonis, kickboxing; Rich Bloom, wrestling; NiccKossivas, Muay Thai/MMA striking.

“I grew up in this area and wanted to return to my roots in order to give back to these communities,” Ruiz explained. “I’m very close to my family and friends I have back here, so this is also an opportunity for me to spend more time with them. I believe a gym like this helps communities and children. Our goal is to create a gym that develops Olympians, but also give kids a place to go, just like I had at the Somerville Boxing Club, where they stay off the streets and learn how to box, wrestle or mixed martial arts training. There are so many bad temptations today for kids and many of them really need a place to go. We want to help them develop self-esteem and character.”

Future plans call for Quietman Sports Gym to become a sanctioned USA Boxing gym. Ruiz also wants to become a boxing and MMA promoter – professional and amateur – and he has already started a boxing consulting agency, Quietman Sports, along with his longtime attorney and advisor, Boston Attorney Anthony M. Cardinale.

“I was able to see the world because of boxing and I want to help kids do the same as part of our future ‘Quietman’ traveling team,” John added. “I’ve been fortunate to have had so many memorable times through boxing and I really want to pass along those experiences and what I’ve learned.”

The 39-year-old Ruiz, who lives in Las Vegas, retired from the ring a year ago. He had a 44-9-1 (30 KOs) career record and fought in 12 world title fights.

Quitman Sports Gym offers active military personal, as well as police officers and fire fighters, discount memberships.

Hours of operations for Quietman Sports Gym are Monday-Thursday, 11 AM/ET-9 PM/ET; Friday 1 AM/ET-8 PM/ET; Saturday 9 AM/ET-2 PMN/ET (closed Sunday).

"DYNASTY: PASCAL VS. HOPKINS" SET FOR DEC. 18 AT PEPSI COLISEUM IN QUEBEC CITY LIVE ON SHOWTIME IN THE U.S. AND PPV IN CANADA‏

FUTURE HALL OF FAMER BERNARD HOPKINS TO FACE WBC AND RING MAGAZINE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION JEAN PASCAL IN "DYNASTY: PASCAL VS. HOPKINS" SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, LIVE ON SHOWTIME® FROM THE PEPSI COLISEUM IN QUEBEC CITY, CANADA

Legendary former World Light Heavyweight and Middleweight Champion and future first-ballot Hall of Famer Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins will fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) and Ring Magazine 175-pound championship against current linear champion Jean Pascal as the main event of "Dynasty: Pascal vs. Hopkins" on Saturday, December 18 from the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Canada. The event will air live in the United States on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

For Hopkins, (51-5-1, 32 KO's), the age-defying throwback pugilist from Philadelphia, Pa., a win overPascal (26-1, 16 KOs), the 27-year-old upstart world champion from Montreal, Canada, means becoming the oldest fighter in the history of the sport to win a prominent world title and the continuation of his boxing dynasty.

"Everyone knows I don't like to travel outside the United States to fight, but here we have another fresh face, who happens to be the light heavyweight champion, calling my name," said Hopkins. "I just say 'here we go again.' I am going all the way to Québec City, Canada to once again show that young and tough doesn't always mean good and smart. Let's see if he can stop me from beating him up and taking the title home to the States. It is these types of fights that get me motivated to train hard and once again prove that no one should ever count me out."

For Pascal, the fight signifies a dream come true as he looks to get the win over the formidable Hopkins and to start a dynasty of his own.

"Two months ago I defeated a top-five pound-for-pound fighter viewed by many as the best light heavyweight in the world in dominant fashion," said Pascal, of his win over then-undefeated Chad Dawson in August. "Now it's time to take on the legendary future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins and finally send him into his well-deserved retirement. He's an old fox, but I'm the young wolf. He may be the master, but I am the commander. I know he may have more experience than any fighter out there, but on December 18, I will show the world once again exactly why I am top dog in my division."

"Dynasty: Pascal vs. Hopkins" is promoted by Group Yvon Michel Inc. and Golden Boy Promotions and presented by the Casino de Montreal and The City of Québec Tourism. The 12-round world championship fight will take place December 18 at the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Canada and will be televised live on SHOWTIME® in the United States. Canadian broadcasts will begin at 7 p.m. ET on Canal Indigo, Bell TV, Shaw TV and Viewer's Choice on pay-per-view in French and English.

Tickets for "Dynasty: Pascal vs. Hopkins," priced starting at C$25, go on sale Saturday, October 23 at 12 p.m. ET at Pepsi Coliseum Box Office, by calling 418-691-7211 or 1-800-900-SHOW or online at www.billetech.com. Also available at Club de Boxe Champion 514-376-0980 and Groupe Yvon Michel Inc. 514-383-0666.

"Jean Pascal is a special young fighter in this day and age, a true throwback to the glory days of boxing" said Yvon Michel, president of Groupe Yvon Michel. "He believes that the best must fight the best, and he has shown it time and again, never turning down a true challenge. He shook the world with his win over Chad Dawson in August, and when he finishes 'The Executioner' on Dec. 18 in Québec City, he should be a lock for Fighter of the Year, an accolade given only once to a Canadian boxer in the history of our sport."

"One thing I have learned over the years is that you can never count Bernard Hopkins out," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. "Bernard is at his best when the challenge is great and his fight against Jean Pascal is a great challenge. On Dec. 18, I expect to see yet another history-making performance from Bernard Hopkins that no fight fan should miss."

"We have an amazing lineup of world championship boxing on tap to close out the year on SHOWTIME, the finale of which is this classic crossroads fight," said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®. "We are thrilled to welcome Bernard Hopkins back to SHOWTIME in what could be an historic night for him and we're proud to welcome Jean Pascal in his network debut. Dec. 18 will put an exclamation point on another banner year for SHOWTIME boxing."

"Quebec City is quickly establishing itself as a true hotbed for boxing fans. Hosting this mega-fight between Pascal and Hopkins is an incredible opportunity to bring Quebec City into the spotlight of millions of viewers in Canada, the United States and across the world thanks to SHOWTIME," said the Mayor of Quebec City, Mr. Régis Labeaume. "In addition to witnessing a historic Championship battle, the thousands of fans who come to take part in this incredible event live at the Pepsi Coliseum will also get the opportunity to discover Quebec City and the all-new Christmas events we have planned that are sure to make our beautiful city the destination of choice for the holiday season."

Dec. 18 marks the amazingly ageless Hopkins' first fight since he settled his 17-year long rivalry with fellow future Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. via lopsided 12-round decision this past April. The 6-foot-1, 45-year-old won the World Middleweight title the first time on SHOWTIME in 1995 and continued to defend that title 20 times, solidifying his place as one of the best middleweights in the history of the sport.

In an incomparable 22-year career that began in October 1988, when Pascal was just five-years-old, Hopkins has defeated many of boxing's all-time greats. Signature wins include a stunning 12th round stoppage of Felix "Tito" Trinidad in 2001, a ninth round knockout of Oscar de la Hoya in 2004, a unanimous decision win over Antonio Tarver in 2006 which crowned him Light Heavyweight World Champion and a dominant win over Winky Wright at 170 pounds in 2007. Perhaps the most impressive win of Hopkins' career came in October of 2008 when he "schooled" a then-undefeated Kelly Pavlik in a shocking unanimous decision, proving to the world that Hopkins is a true testament to the phrase "age is nothing but a number."

The 5-foot-11 Pascal, who turns 28 on Oct. 28, is looking to prove his status as one of the top fighters in the world. He catapulted into global prominence after he registered one of the year's biggest upsets in his last outing when he defended his WBC crown and captured the vacant Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight title with a shocking 11th-round technical decision over heavily favored Chad Dawson on Aug. 14. Pascal performed magnificently against Dawson and was ahead on all three judges' scorecards (108-101 and 106-103 twice) when the fight was stopped after an unintentional head-butt opened up a huge cut above Dawson's left eye.

Pascal, one of the most highly decorated amateurs ever to come out of Canada, has come a very long way in a stellar professional career spanning less than six years. After winning the NABO, NABA, and NABF 168-pound belts in 2007, the opportunity to fulfill his dream of winning a world championship came in December 2008 when he traveled to England to take on the undefeated Carl Froch in his hometown of Nottingham for the WBC Super Middleweight World Championship. Pascal dropped a close decision to Froch in a heart-pounding back and forth battle that many boxing insiders called the Fight of the Year. The young Pascal took his first and only defeat in stride and just six months later, in his first fight at his new weight of 175 pounds, defeated the dangerous and then-undefeated Adrian Diaconu for the WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship. Dec. 18 will mark Pascal's fourth defense of that title and his first defense of the prestigious Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Steve Albert, Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver will call the action with Jim Gray reporting from ringside. The executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports is David Dinkins, Jr. with Bob Dunphy directing.

PEPSI COLISEUM, formerly The Quebec Coliseum, is a multi-purpose arena in Quebec City, Quebec. It was the home of the WHA and NHL Quebec Nordiques from 1972-1995, and is currently the home of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).The Coliseum hosts the Québec International Peewee Hockey Tournament annually in February, with almost 2300 young hockey players from 16 countries participating. No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on John McCain, MMA, and Boxing

No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on John McCain, MMA, and Boxing

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-30T10_34_02-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, we focus on discussing the article "Punch Drunk Love. How boxing explains John McCain" by Michael Crowley in The New Republic (http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=8adb26e1-5e0b-48f7-9587-55d3cf9a365f), which quotes me extensively about McCain's obsessive campaign against mixed martial arts in the 1990's. We also discuss the significance of those views of McCain for today.

In addition, we also discuss the EliteXC show on CBS this past Saturday, the monumental drop in ratings from their May 31 show, and other issues including the future of the IFL, MMA coming to New York, and the flawed pay-per-view model for combat sports.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by commenting on the thrillingly brutal welterweight title battle held this past Saturday night in Las Vegas between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, won by Margarito via an 11th-round TKO. Next, we preview the upcoming edition of Broadway Boxing, the local New York fight series put on by promoter Lou DiBella, which will take place Wednesday, August 6, at the B.B. King Blues Club in Times Square in Manhattan. We speak with several fighters who will be on that card: Queens heavyweight Vinny Maddalone (29-4, 20 KOs), Irish junior middleweight James Moore (15-1, 10 KOs), and two fighters making their pro debuts, light heavyweight Will Rosinsky, who was a U.S. national amateur champion and a four-time New York Golden Gloves champion, and middleweight Phillip Jackson-Benson, who was a two-time New York Golden Gloves champion. We also speak with promoter Lou DiBella about Broadway Boxing and boxing in New York. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. German education for Matt Godfrey‏

German education for Matt Godfrey

PROVIDENCE– NABF cruiserweight champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (16-1, 9 KOs) has been boxing professionally for four years, after a lengthy amateur career, but his ring education reached another level last month in Germany, albeit in defeat.

As the No. 1 rated contender in the World Boxing Council, Godfrey was matched against No. 2 ranked Rudy Kraj in a 12-round WBC Title Eliminator to determine the WBC’s mandatory challenger to title-holder David Haye. Kraj won a unanimous 12-round decision by scores of 117-111, 116-113, and 115-113.

Fighters react differently to adversity, especially a first loss; they generally come back stronger than ever because of the experience or fold-up and end-up nothing more than a club fighter. The 27-year-old Godfrey says he’s learned valuable lessons about himself and boxing that will help make him a world champion in the not too distant future.

“I went overseas to fight Kraj in his backyard,” Godfrey said. “I got through a difficult fight and learned a lot that I hadn’t experienced in my first 16 pro fights. I proved that I can dig down and go 12 hard rounds. I also learned that I have to become a lot meaner and more aggressive. I can’t just rely on my boxing ability, being ‘Too Smooth,’ and just looking good in the ring. I need to bite down, push forward and take the fight away from my opponent – like Vinny Paz did – instead of just boxing around in the ring.”

“The loss wasn’t devastating to his career,” Godfrey’s manager Bret Hallenback explained, “as long as he’s learned and that depends on how he comes back. It’s too early to say right now, but it’s no more than one loss, and I strongly believe he learned a lot. One thing he learned is that he’s not invincible, which will put pressure on him in future fights. It was a huge eye-opener for him. Matt has to be aggressive and use the skills and power he definitely has. It was an education. He took a loss, not a beating, and I have no doubt that he learned a valuable lesson. We need to get him into a big fight to prove his last fight wasn’t the norm, but more of a fluke, and an education for him.”

Godfrey was second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, compiling a 194-23 amateur record, including six national championships -- four open tournaments highlighted by the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics – as well as a Bronze medal at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge).

His most notable wins as a pro were devastating stoppages of highly-touted prospects Shaun George and Felix Cora, Jr. on national television of. Matt was riding high until he fought Czech Republic native Kraj in Germany.

“I was terribly disappointed with my first loss, but now I realize that all champions (not named Floyd Mayweather or Joe Calzaghe) lose at some point. It isn’t the end of the world, as long as you learn from a loss, and I’ve learned a lot. I know what I’m capable of and I just have to put it all together. I still believe I’m the best cruiserweight in the world. I can’t wait to fight again. I went back into the gym right away and I’ve been working as hard as if I was preparing for a fight. I want to fight the top guys, on television, and get back to where I belong.”

Once rated No. 1, Godfrey dropped to No. 7 after his loss, which surprised Godfrey’s promoter, Jimmy Burchfield (Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.). “I don’t understand why he’s rated any lower than No. 3,” Burchfield noted. “He lost a close 12-round decision to the No. 2 guy and dropped all of the way to No. 7? I don’t get it. Matt won the championship rounds. He took over the fight but started off too slow and ended-up finishing just a little short. There’s no question that this experience is going to make him an even better fighter.”

WORLD 122-POUND CHAMPION ISRAEL VAZQUEZ VICTORY CELEBRATION LUNCHEON

Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Frank Espinoza’s High-Flying Boxing Club honored one of the greatest, most talented pound-for-pound and exciting fighters in the world, Israel Vazquez, at a victory celebration luncheon Wednesday for his legendary, instant-classic victories over arch rival Rafael Marquez.

Manager Frank Espinoza (left) and WBC 122-pound champion Israel Vazquez pose during Wednesday's victory celebration luncheon in Lynwood, Calif.

Vazquez, who is promoted by Sycuan and managed by Espinoza, successfully defended his world 122-crown by rallying dramatically to outpoint Marquez on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the rubber match of an epic, memorable series.

Vazquez would reign supreme in the exhilarating trilogy, taking two out of three. Each slugfest would top the previous one in energy, excitement and goosebumps, making it one of the most critically acclaimed trilogies of all time.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions will present a similar tribute ceremony for Vazquez next Wednesday night, April 9, at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego.

SCOTT WOODWORTH: “What separates the three incredibly tremendous battles between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez and all the rest is this: All the other trilogies had one, maybe two great fights, but that was it.

Vazquez gets his hands raised by Woodworth (left) and Espinoza with a smiling Tucker at their side.

“The fights that Vazquez and Marquez gave us produced three spectacular fights, with each one being better than the last. I have been involved in boxing a very long time and this is the best trilogy that the sport has ever seen.

“Every night since the third fight ended I go to bed watching a different round. One night it might be round four; another night, he could be round 12 where Israel displayed his true warrior spirit.

“I’ve watched that last fight over 20 times. It was the greatest win that I have ever witnessed. I am so thankful to Israel and his family, who sacrifice so much of their time.

“We can’t honor Israel enough for his performance March 1, or in any of his fights with Marquez. The dedication he put into his training in the months before were on display and undeniable in the third fight. Israel Vazquez is truly a once in a generation type fighter.

“He became a superstar with those fights and we at Sycuan are thrilled to have the privilege to promote him.

“Boxing is a sport not always known for its trust, but Israel’s manager, Frank Espinoza, has been as trust-worthy and as great a friend and business partner as you can have.

“Both Frank and I knew that Marquez was going to be a tough fight. We also knew that sometimes great risk actually does equal great rewards, and in this case it absolutely has. Israel and Frank deserves all the accolades. We, at Sycuan, are just delighted to be part of it.’’

WILLIE TUCKER JR.: “Israel gave such a spectacular performance in such a spectacular fight; we have nothing but admiration and love for him and his wife. The finish of the fight was so exciting, so dramatic, it brought tears to my eyes. It was such a historic moment.

“In 1998, before we knew we wanted to be boxing promoters, we saw Israel fight. To think we are now and have been his promoter makes us so proud.

“It’s an honor to have Israel and Frank and their families as part of the Sycuan family.’’

FRANK ESPINOZA: “I want to thank Scott and Willie and all those at Sycuan for making this victory celebration possible.

“On March 1, 2008, Israel won the last fight of an historic trilogy. He put on an unforgettable performance that will surely land him in the Hall of Fame.

“His display of bravery and relentless passion to win made him countless fans around the one and made him one of boxing’s pound-for-pound greatest.

“On that incredible Saturday night, Israel carved his way into the history books and, in winning, made Team Vazquez and Sycuan Ringside Promotions a part of history.

Vazquez, who's exciting, memorable, epic trilogy with Rafael Marquez struck all the right chords, strikes one of his own as Sycuan's Willie Tucker Jr. (left), Espinoza and Sycuan's Scott Woodworth look on.

“Twenty years from now when they are replayed for future generations, fans will know that Israel Vazquez, Rafael Marquez and their promoters made three spectacular fights a reality.

“They’ll realize just how special a fighter Israel Vazquez was and why he’ll always be known as “El Magnifico.’

“We’re here to pay tribute to a warrior who refuses to take no for an answer, a fighter who truly is an inspiration to those who ever thought about giving up in a tough situation, a fighter who went from a longshot contender to a future legend of the sport.’’

ISRAEL VAZQUEZ: “I’m very touched to be here celebrating the historical trilogy. I feel honored to have been a part of it. It’s just now hitting me I was such a huge part of history. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Rafael Marquez and his team.

Vazquez poses with the mariachi band that performed before, during and after the ceremony..

“The legacy I hope to leave behind is one that will let the fight fans always remember me as a champion. I didn’t back down because I am a true warrior for all time.

“It was both the hard work that we put into our training that made the fights. I am thankful for my family, manager and Sycuan for believing in me.

“When I was knocked down in the fourth round in our last fight, I felt angered because I didn’t see that coming. I was in my own backyard and in front of my hometown fans and so I channeled that anger to take me through to the rest of the fight.’’

John 'The Qietman' Ruiz fighting his way back into another title shot; 2-time world heavyweight champion player again

LAS VEGAS– Fresh off of his dominating performance against four-time world title challenger Jameel “Big Time” McCline, two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs) has fought himself back into position for another world title shot.

A rejuvenated Ruiz won a lop-sided 12-round decision on March 8 in a near shutout performance (119-109, 118-110, 117-111) against McCline, who is his previous fight had three times floored Samuel Peter, the new WBC heavyweight champion after stopping Oleg Maskaev on the same card in Cancun. (Judge Julie Lederman, who scored 119-109 in favor of Ruiz, also had McCline losing 112-113 to Peter.)

The new Ruiz is similar to the vintage edition of the Puerto Rican/American who first won the world title in 2001 with a 12-round decision against legendary Evander Holyfield.

“I’m excited and looking forward to my next fight,” Ruiz said. “All of my hard training paid off. (Ruiz weighed-in against McCline at his lightest in five years, 233 lbs.) I’m much more confident fighting this time around. I’m more aggressive than I’ve been in years, throwing more punches and combinations. Everybody’s talking about Sam Peter being the best heavyweight since Lennox Lewis. McCline almost finished off Peter and look what I did to McCline. I’m back at the top of my game and I can beat anybody out there. I’m still in the game; I will be a title holder again and try to unify the titles.

“I’m encouraged by a lot of positive feedback I’ve gotten since the McCline fight. I’m motivated more today than I ever was in the past. I changed my whole crew, especially bringing in Manny Siaca, Sr. as head trainer, which has helped me achieve the position I’m in, back on the right track. I’ve been learning some new things with Manny. I feel like I’m almost starting over again. I’m so excited. Manny has trained 28 world champs and I’m going to be his 29th. What I’ve been through makes me want it more today. Working with Manny has been a great opportunity for me to learn and put it into my game. I’m mentally focused and I’ve been doing everything possible to be my best.”

Ruiz, who has fought in 10 world championship fights, has beaten three world heavyweight champions -- Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – as well as top contenders Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Kirk Johnson and McCline during his 15-year pro career.

Ruiz-McCline was a WBC Qualifier with the winner promised the No. 3 spot in the next ratings. Ruiz is ranked No. 2 in the WBA and cracked the WBO ratings at No. 11.

“My fight against McCline showed I’m ready for anybody in the division,” Ruiz added. “If any of the true world champions want to show what they’re worth, let them prove it by fighting me, somebody who has never ducked an opponent and with more world title fight experience than anybody. I’m ready for any of the title-holders – (Wladimir) Klitschko, Peter, or the (Ruslan) Chagaev-(Nikolay) Valuev winner. I’m back in the gym already getting prepared for my next fight. I’m back!”

CALVIN BROCK TO DELAY RING RETURN UNTIL RETINA HEALS

TOTOWA, NJ – In December 2007 heavyweight contender Calvin Brock underwent surgery to repair retinal damage in his right eye. In response to questions from the media and fans about his return to the ring, Brock has released this statement:

“I have been asked by members of the media and by boxing fans when I will return to the ring,” said Brock. “Recently I underwent surgery to fix damage in the retina of my right eye and I am waiting for the damage to heal. I plan to return to the ring once my eye is 100%. Until then I will rest and do what is necessary to help my eye repair.”
