NYC Republicans For Obama?
NEW YORK CITY REPUBLICANS FOR OBAMA?
The unanticipated success of Senator Barack Obama’s campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination has positioned the new generation party leader as the presumptive candidate in November. The meteoric rise of the young legislator from Illinois to national prominence and presidential stardom, is generating political pandemonium as new voters engage the elective process and opposing partisans are facilitating a bandwagon effect.
Among the new converts to Obama’s political express is Gary James, a leader of the grassroots activist wing of the Republican Party in New York. James voted for Senator McCain in the presidential primary, and endorsed the Senator in his capacity as national chairman of TheGrandOldParty.org, a website to be formally launched in the fall. James announced that he has reconsidered his presidential endorsement of McCain and is now in support of Obama for president during a directors meeting of the GOP initiative.
James said, “After serious consideration I have decided to work on behalf of Senator Obama’s election to the presidency of the United States. I have discussed my resignation as national chairman with members of the executive committee, and it has been tendered effective immediately. I intend to write on behalf of the candidate on a voluntary basis, speak, organize and work directly with Democrats, independents and like minded Republicans.”
James continued, “I remain an advocate of a 30 / 70 (Republican/Democratic) percent split of the Black vote as a means to establish political leverage power in the community. However, I realize that 30 / 70 is a goal to be achieved in the near future because it is not achievable is presidential election 2008, as a practical political matter. Therefore, I will work for Obama’s election because his candidacy represents a political paradigm shift as well as a fundamental realignment in the Democratic and Republican Parties.”
He concluded, “I still like Senator McCain and continue to believe that he is an exceptional presidential nominee for the Republican Party, such as it is… Unfortunately, the Republican Party district leadership infrastructure in New York City in particular is compromised to the Democrats, and the Republican Party brand is effectively hi-jacked by a sophisticated conservative political splinter group. McCain the political maverick and independent political vote getter has the right stuff, but he is unable to walk on the political water given the current atmospherics.”

James reiterated his unequivocal support for Keisha Morrisey, a new generation Harlem resident now considering to run as a Republican candidate for the New York State Assembly. Ms. Morrisey is a former GOP candidate for the New York State Assembly and the New York City Council in 2002 and 2003 respectively.
Keisha Morrisey said, “I support Senator McCain and I hope to be able to campaign in Harlem with him, if I am successful in getting the Republican Party nomination.”

Alton Chase, former Republican Party district leader in the Bronx, and chairman of the New York City Chapter of TGOP said, “Gary was inspired by the Obama tsunami but he was motivated by the fact that the local GOP leadership continuing to ignore the challenge and opportunity for political investment banking in the Black community. The party resists a forward moving political trajectory.”
Chase continued, “Gary raised the fact of Republican Party intransigence at an executive committee meeting and proposed the idea of ‘New York City Republicans for Obama,’ but the vote split. Supporters of Gary’s idea said that they may form an Obama support group called ‘purple people,’ a concept of blending red state and blue state dichotomy as a national election initiative.
“But apart from the internal dynamic relative to the Obama phenomenon,” Chase concluded, “there were existential forces influencing Gary that may have pushed him over the top politically. He was being lobbied consistently by an old and respected friend by the name of Ron Myers. As I understand, Ron is associated with the Obama campaign and is raising money on his behalf. I think that his friend Ron may have closed him. I suspect that others will follow Gary’s lead.

UNCASVILLE, Conn.,– Heavyweight Roy Nelson (Las Vegas) and lightweight Ryan Schultz (North Platte, Neb.) defended their respective International Fight League titles while Dan Miller (Sparta, N.J.) scored a victory over defending middleweight champion Ryan McGivern (Bettendorf, Iowa) before 4,530 tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Nelson capped the evening with a victory over Brad Imes (Kansas City, Mo.), after Schultz defeated fellow lightweight Deividas Taurosevicius (Lithuania) to retain his belt. Nelson started with a blitz of punches right at the start of the first round which Imes was able to recover briefly. Nelson finished the bout with a crunching series of blows for the quick KO. Schultz and Taurosevicius battled hard, with both surviving near-submissions and solid strikes. Ultimately, Schultz claimed the unanimous decision. Miller’s was a quick finish, after an exciting first three minutes of the first round in which both competitors maintained a high-energy pace. Miller caught McGivern in a kneebar to win his first title. The preliminary bouts featured athletes from four MMA camps, including Team Quest, Team Bombsquad, World Class Fight Center and Team Prodigy. Lightweight John Franchi (Cortland, N.Y.) of Bombsquad got the night off to an exciting start with a first-round submission victory over Frank Latina (Middletown, Conn.). Cruiserweight sensation Aaron Williams headlines his first ESPN2 FNF show May 23 “Ring Warriors” at Twin River Events Center, RI
PROVIDENCE– ESPN2 Friday Night Fights (ESPN2 FNF) returns May 23 to Rhode Island as unbeaten prospect “Awesome” Aaron Williams, the future of the cruiserweight division, headlines his first major show on “Ring Warriors,” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), live from Twin River Events Center in Lincoln.
“Ring Warriors” features some of the hottest, most exciting prospects in the world – potential world champions such as Williams, 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada and Philadelphia’s exciting super lightweight “Hammerin” Hank Lundy – along with a grudge match and some great young boxers.
Williams (17-0-1, 12 KOs), living in Las Vegas but making North Providence his second home, was last scene registering a sensational knockout of Andre Purlette (40-3) in the second round of their April 4 fight on the ESPN2 FNF show at Twin River. Williams, 22, takes on Columbian power puncher Jose Luis “Pantera” Herrera (15-4, 15 KOs), who has knocked out each of his 15 victims.
In an 8-round Special Heavyweight Attraction, Providence heavyweight Estrada (12-1, 2 KOs), coming off of an impressive 10-round decision against former NABO/NABA/WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion Lance “Mount” Whitaker (32-5-1, 27 KOs) headlining the April 4 ESPN2 FNF show, faces Philadelphia knockout specialist Derek “The One Man Riot” Bryant (20-4-1, 17 KOs).
In the chief supporting bout on the stacked undercard, Lundy (10-0-1, 6 KOs) takes on Texas State champion Steve Almaraz (7-0, 4 KOs) in the battle of unbeatens in a six-round bout.
“The action promises to be explosive,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “Fans better not leave their seats during any of these fights. Aaron Williams really is awesome. His devastating knockouts of opponents have been showcased on ESPN, not only on its Friday Night Fights shows, but over and over again on Sports Center. He is a future star; world champion in the making, and he’s made a lot of friends in his two fights at Twin River – incredible first and second knockouts of quality opponents. Aaron will fight anybody and Herrera has 15 knockouts in 15 wins. Jason has already started making noise in the heavyweight division, especially after beating a great fighter like Whitaker so convincingly, on his way to becoming world heavyweight champion someday. His opponent, Bryant, is a typically tough, heavy-handed, very dangerous Philadelphia fighter who has 17 knockouts to his credit.
“Lundy reminds me of a little Vinny Paz, who is one of Hank’s biggest fans. Hank keeps coming forward like Vinny. He’s a very exciting, charismatic young fighter. McCreedy has his Irish fans behind him for his grudge match against always-tough Mayes. Starnino is a very popular fighter in Rhode Island, Camacho can put his opponent’s lights out at any time with either hand, and Beauchamp has been electrifying in his fights. We’re thrilled to bring a great show like this to Twin River and to showcase CES talent again on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights.”
Also on the undercard in a 6-rounder is light heavyweight “Irish” Joey McCreedy (7-2, 5 KOs), who’ll be seeking revenge against “Hurricane” Henry Mayes (7-5-1, 4 KOs), who beat McCreedy in a close decision on April 4.
Unbeaten, crowd-pleasing Johnston (RI) super middleweight Angel Camacho, Jr. (9-0, 4 KOs), the Latino Captain of Team CES, Lynn (MA) flyweight Isander Beauchamp (5-0, 2 KOs), and Italian-American favorite, Providence middleweight Richard “Bobo The Bull” Starnino (8-3-1, 1 KO), are all scheduled to fight opponents to be determined. All bouts and fighters are subject to change.
Tickets for “Ring Warriors” are priced at $25.00, $35.00, $50.00, (Bronze), $65.00 (Silver), $100.00 (Gold) and limited $150.00 (Jimmy’s Platinum Club) and are available to purchase by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.twinriver.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Twin River Event Center (100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, RI), or any TicketMaster location. Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) or Twin River Events Center (877.82.RIVER/ www.twinriver.com) for more information. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first bout at 7 PM/ET.
(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Ring Warriors.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by an adult and they must enter through the West entrance.)

TOKYO, Japan— Promoter Don King has come to the rescue of boxing fans around the world that would have missed out on an opportunity to see Monday’s World Boxing Association lightweight championship by making it available for free at DonKingTV.com.
The same-day webcast of WBA lightweight champion Jose Alfaro defending his crown against Yosuke Kobori from Tokyo, Japan, will be available worldwide to fans logging on to DonKingTV.com on Monday (May 19) at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT (1 a.m. GMT)
The WBA granted special permission for Alfaro (20-3, 18 KOs), from Nicaragua, to make this voluntary title defense against Japanese champion Kobori (22-2-1, 11 KOs) under the condition that the winner must face the mandatory challenger next, which will also be determined on this card.
Fans around the globe will also see undefeated Paulus Moses (22-0, 16 KOs), from Namibia, for the first time since he secured the WBA lightweight No. 1 ranking when he meets Yahuhen Krohlik (7-10-2), from Belarus, to determine who will become the WBA mandatory lightweight challenger.
Kelly Oil is sponsoring the webcast. Promoter Don King represents Alfaro and will be in attendance at the match, which is being promoted by Kadobei Promotions.
“First I went from the Rumble in the Jungle to the Thrilla in Manila,” King said. “Now I will have webcast to a worldwide audience three fights from three different continents in just three months. The future is now.”

Mijares-Munoz Super Flyweight Unification headlines Saturday night’s “Noche De Campeones” PPV Card from Mexico Salado-Miranda co-feature
GOMEZ PALACIO, DURANGO, Mexico– WBC champion Cristian Mijares fights WBA title-holder Alexander “El Explosivio” Munoz on Saturday night (May 17) in the first super flyweight unification title bout in more than 10 years, headlining the “Noche de Campeones” pay-per-view event live from the Auditorio Centenario in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico.
The 12-round Mijares-Munoz main event is a classic boxer-puncher match-up between hometown hero and rising star, Mijares (34-3-2, 14 KOs), and feared Venezuelan knockout artist, Munoz (32-2, 27 KOs). The exciting 12-round co-feature pits Mexican warriors Omar Salado (19-0-2, 11 KOs) and Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda (25-3-1, 18 KOs) in a WBC flyweight elimination bout.
“This is the first show of this type ever from this region,” Knockout Entertainment president Ignacio “Nacho” Huizar said. “It’s impossible to calculate the international television coverage but it’s going to be a fantastic success.'
“Noche de Campeones,” promoted by KO Entertainment in association with DiBella Entertainment, will be produced and distributed by Integrated Sports for live viewing in the United States (9 PM/ET, 6 PM/ET) on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and DISH Network, as well as on The Fight Network in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.
Hall of Fame announcer Col. Bob Sheridan, who has called more world championship fights than anybody, will handle the blow-by-blow duties in English with his color commentator partner, former NFL place kicker Benny Ricardo. On the Spanish-speaking broadcast, Hall of Fame announcer Carlos Avilas will do blow-by-blow with his color analyst, Fernando Paramo, who is a veteran of the Forum Boxing series. Bi-lingual Joe Martinez is the ring announcer.
“I’m ready and I’m sure I’m going to beat my opponent,” Mijares remarked. “I’m not going to say if it’ll end early or go the distance, but I’m prepared for anything because it’s a big responsibility to be fighting at home. We’re not friends but we’re not enemies, either. We’re just rivals for this fight.”
“I’m ready for this fight.” Munoz commented. “I’m going to knockout Mijares and take both belts back to Venezuela.”
The chief supporting fight on the live PPV broadcast features a pair of tough Mexican boxers, super welterweight Martin “Azteca” Avila (9-2, 3 KOs) against Alberto Hernandez (14-11-2, KOs), in a 10-round bout. Slated for the live undercard are lightweights Ricardo “Camaleon” Mijares (9-0, 8 KOs) and Arturo Mijares (5-1, 4 KOs), as well as welterweight Ivan “El Ruso” Pereyra (1-0, 1 KO), are slated to fight on “Noches De Campeones.” All bouts and fighters are subject to change.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the outrageous decision by Arizona State University to close down, without any notice, its storied wrestling program. A web site has been set up as part of a campaign to save Arizona State University wrestling (http://www.saveasuwrestling.com/).
Next, we speak with Jeffrey Siegel, senior vice president, specialized sales and marketing, of ESPN. We discuss the importance of the combat sports of boxing, mixed martial arts, and wrestling to the ESPN group of networks.
Preparations for the first "CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights", which air Saturday, May 31, 9-11 PM ET/PT, are continuing. This event will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and will be first primetime major network broadcast of a mixed martial arts event in America.
On a media conference call this week, we spoke with Gina Carano and Kaitlin Young, who will be facing each other in a women's 140-pound fight. We spoke them, as well as EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw, about this fight and the importance of women competing in mixed martial arts.
On another media conference call, we spoke with EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and challenger Scott Smith, who have a title fight on this card.

Kenny Florian to host "MMA Live" on ESPN.com
By: Adam Morgan
Kenny Florian recently spoke with MMA Weekly and talked about a new show on ESPN.com called "MMA Live" that he will be hosting along with ESPN's John Anik and Newark Star-Ledger reporter Franklin McNeil. Here's some of what Florian had to say about the show:
"(It's) kind of a fast-paced show on the current news and events going on in the sport. There's a whole lot of guys at ESPN that have been trying to get this done I guess for two years," said Florian in an exclusive interview with MMAWeekly.com.
"Basically, I was contacted by ESPN about two weeks before my fight against (Joe) Lauzon, and there was some interest. They finally got the okay to do an MMA show, and they were interested in using me for this show," Florian said.
Florian has done extremely well in his two stints on the UFC broadcasts and is a perfect fit for this position. He also goes on to say that if the show is well received that it may end up on television. That would be a step in the right direction to get some kind of MMA programming on ESPN, something the MMA community has been speculating about for a long time.
The show debuts tonight on ESPN.com at 7 p.m. ET.

JOAN GUZMAN SETS SIGHTS ON WBO 135 POUND CHAMPION NATE CAMPBELL
SAN DIEGO, Calif.– Now that Joan Guzman has vacated his WBO 130 pound title, the undefeated Dominican-born speedster is looking for a challenge at the lightweight level.
“I think Nate Campbell would be a perfect opponent for me,” said Guzman, who is a two-division champion with a record of 28-0 with 17 knockouts. “Nobody wants to fight Nate at 135 pounds and no one wants to fight me at 130 pounds. So let’s just fight each other.”
Guzman, who is promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions of San Diego, Calif., might not have to wait long to get his shot at Campbell.
“The WBO has assured Sycuan that Guzman will in fact become the number one contender at 135 pounds,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions.
“Nate doesn’t have a bunch of options right now. He thinks he’s going to get a shot at Joel Cassameyor, but that fight will never happen. Plain and simple, Nate’s best fight is against Guzman.”
“I’ve always been about fighting the best,” Guzman continued. “If Nate is truly a world champion he will accept the challenge that I have laid out for him.
“Twenty-eight boxers have tired to beat me and they all failed miserably. Nate will be number twenty-nine if he has the guts and courage to fight me.
“I’m ready to fight Nate anytime, any place, anywhere. A lot of boxers are afraid of me, but I sure hope Nate isn’t one of them.”
Guzman, who has won titles at the super bantamweight and super featherweight divisions, made the choice to move up in weight after he grew irritated with Alex Arthur and his promoter, Frank Warren of Sports Network.
Guzman was scheduled to defend his WBO 130 pound title on Saturday, May 3, in Edinburgh, Scotland but the fight was postponed. Although he has been ready to travel to Scotland at a moment’s notice, Warren has not scheduled a new date for the bout.
“My team and I have tried with every good intention to honor our agreement to fight Arthur in Scotland on May 3,” Guzman said. “Frank Warren and his team made every excuse possible to cancel the fight. My team and I decided that it is time for me to make my mark at the 135 pound division and I’m going to start with Nate Campbell.”
