No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie, Chris Weidman, and Luca Atalla on ADCC East Coast Trials

No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie, Chris Weidman, and Luca Atalla on ADCC East Coast Trials

http://nhbnews.podomatic.com/entry/2009-06-14T18_04_22-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on some recent issues in mixed martial arts. We applaud the wise contract negotiations by Mirko Cro Cop with the UFC and Dream, and condemn the absurd fight between former top heavyweight boxer Ray Mercer and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, won by Mercer with a one-punch knockout.

This past Saturday, June 13, the ADCC East Coast Trials were held at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. The winners of the five weight classes contested all earned berths in the 2009 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship (http://www.adcombat.net/adnet/Wrestling/), which will be held September 26-27 in Barcelona, Spain.

Right after his match, we had a chance to speak with Chris Weidman (http://www.chrisweidman.com/) of Serra Jiu-Jitsu, who defeated James Brasco (Pablo Popovitch) by anaconda choke in the middleweight finals. We spoke about this match, what it means for his career, his wrestling background, and his plans in both grappling and mixed martial arts.

At this event was the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, grappling, and mixed martial arts legend Renzo Gracie (http://renzogracie.com/). As always, Renzo had some very poignant comments about the importance of what we had just witnessed.

We also spoke with our old colleague Luca Atalla of Gracie Magazine (http://www.graciemag.com/). Luca has covered all the ADCC world championships, so his comments about these East Coast Trials were particularly insightful.

RAGING BULL ARRIVES IN U.S. FOR SHOWDOWN WITH KING KONG Less Than One Month Remains Until The Stars Collide Saturday, July 11, LIVE on SHOWTIME

NEW YORK– Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan arrived in the U.S. late last week to finish training as he looks to become a world champion in a third weight class when he challenges International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight champion Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko on Saturday, July 11, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Darchinyan has already solidified his status as the No. 1 super flyweight in the world and one of the top pound-for-pound boxers. Now, with less than one month to go before his highly anticipated showdown with Agbeko, Darchinyan is back in the U.S., where he has been dominant in his last three world title fights.
The world championship match will originate from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., and is being co-promoted by Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions, LLC.

"Hurricane Vic is building up steam and should be at full strength by the time it makes landfall in Florida on July 11," said Gary Shaw, Darchinyan's promoter. "King Kong Agbeko will be sunk into a tropical depression of immense proportions when Vic finishes with him."

The hard-hitting, Australian, by way of Armenia, arrived in Las Vegas on Thursday, June 4, for a full month of intense training leading up to the fight at Johnny Tocco’s Boxing Gym.

“I’m just starting to get used to this weather,” Darchinyan said. “It’s too hot here. I came from cold weather in Sydney to the hot humidity here. There’s a big difference. I can tell sweating in the gym.”

“But, it’s getting better and I’m getting used to it. In one more week, I will be ready for the fight and in perfect condition. The heat here is similar to the heat and humidity in Florida, so this will help.”

Darchinyan says his training camp has been going as planned, and fans can expect to see more of the polished boxing skills he displayed in recent fights to go along with his devastating hooks and jabs.

“My training has been going great,” Darchinyan said. “I started my first sparring session in Las Vegas today (Wednesday, June 10). I’ve been preparing very hard and, physically, I’m going to be much stronger than I was in my last fight.”

Darchiyan is on a strict high-protein diet consisting of large amounts of fish, non-fatty meat and fresh soup that is prepared a particular way.

He completed his weightlifting workout while training in Sydney. Now, with just one month to go, he is focusing on cardio and sparring. A typical routine day for Darchinyan consists of running, push-ups, sit-ups and sparring.

The Darchinyan camp has rented a house so that their training in Las Vegas is similar to life at home in Sydney.

“Everything is going as planned. Everything is perfect. In one more month I will be 110 percent ready for the fight.”

Never shy to give his thoughts on the fight and his opponent, Darchinyan, as always, predicts a knockout.

“The guy (Agbeko) is talking big,” Darchinyan said. “He’s saying that he’s too big for me and that I’m small. He says he’s going to send me back to my weight division. But when I punch him and I punish him, he is going to see a big difference from what his other opponents have given him. I’m going to be much more powerful than any one he has faced.

“I’m going to knock him out. From the first round, I am going to go after him, punish him, punish him and knock him out. I’m going to show the fans a real good knockout and a very good, exciting fight.”

Darchinyan (32-1, 26 KOs) solidified his status as the No. 1 super flyweight in the world – and one of the top boxers pound-for-pound – with back-to-back impressive victories over Jorge Arce last Feb. 7 on SHOWTIME and Christian Mijares on Nov. 1, 2008, on SHOWTIME.

An Australia-based Armenian, Darchinyan exited his signature victory over Mijares with the IBF, World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) 115-pound belts. A former IBF flyweight champion, Darchinyan is appearing on SHOWTIME for a ninth time.

Agbeko (26-1,22 KOs), of New York by way of Ghana, will be making the second defense of the 118-pound crown he won with a seventh-round TKO over Luis Perez in August 2007. A winner of five in a row, Agbeko is coming off a 12-round decision over William Gonzalez on Dec, 11, 2008.

The co-feature pits two top-10 ranked 135-pound contenders in the biggest fight of their lives when Antonio DeMarco (21-1-1, 15 KOs), of Tijuana, Mexico, takes on West African native Anges “Baby Face” Adjaho (25-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round bout.

Fernando Guerrero’s 1st main event Friday night at home in Maryland Headlines vs Norman in PrizeFightTV.org PPV show in Salisbury

SOUTHHAVEN, Miss.– Undefeated middleweight prospect Fernando Guerrero fights in his first main event Friday night, headlining the “Boxing’s Future Champions” pay-per-view pro card, in front of his passionate hometown fans at Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

“Boxing’s Future Champions,” presented by Prize Fight Boxing, will air on PPV at www.PrizeFightTV.com, starting at 8 PM/ET, for only $4.95.

“We’re excited to launch this series and bring world-class boxing to diehard fans all over,” promoter Brian Young said. “For a nominal fee fans can watch a first-class production featuring tomorrow’s champions today. We have six unbeaten fighters, including two former International amateur champions, and two pairs of brothers on this card.”

Guerrero (13-0, 11 KOs), born in the Dominican Republic, makes Salisbury his home and he regularly fights there before a packed house. He has already fought twice on ESPN and once on Showtime. The talented southpaw takes on Brian “The Assassin” Norman in the 8-round main event. The 22-year-old Guerrero captured a gold medal at the World Cadet Junior Olympics and 2007 USA National Championships, among his more notable amateur accomplishments. Norman went the distance against Jean Pascal and he has also been in the ring against Henry Buchanan.

“It feels good knowing I’ll be fighting in my first main event,” Guerrero noted, “but every time I’ve fought at home, I felt that I was in the main event because everybody left after my fight. Now, everybody knows I’m in the main event.”

The 6-round co-feature pits 2007 World Golden Gloves champion Shawn Porter (8-0, 6 KOs), arguably the top US amateur boxer of the 21st century, against upset-minded junior middleweight Dion Savage (5-0, 3 KOs), in a rare match-up of unbeaten prospects. Porter, a 2008 US OIympic Team alternate, is a complete fighter who has tremendous upside.

Philadelphia super middleweight Farah Enis (10-0, 5 KOs) puts his undefeated record on the line against another unbeaten prospect, Bobby Jordan (6-0, 2 KOs), in an 8-round bout.

Also on the undercard is exciting middleweight Dominic Wade (2-0, 2 KOs) versus. Anthony Cannon (4-12, 1 KO) and Fernando’s older brother, Alex Guerrero, making his pro debut against cruiserweight Rodrika Ray (2-1, 1 KO) in a pair of 4-round bouts, plus Farah’s older brother, Derrick “Pooh” Ennis, Jr. (17-2, 12 KOs), faces junior middleweight Joshua “Poison” Onyango (14-17, 11 KOs) in an 8-round match.

Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard targets veteran Edel Ruiz in journey towards top tier of featherweights

MANCHESTER, Conn.– WBC Youth and USNBC featherweight champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard faces veteran Edel “Cuate” Ruiz on Thursday night at Michael’s Eight Avenue in Glen Burnie,

The 23-year-old Remillard (17-0, 9 KOs), fighting out of Manchester, Connecticut, stopped 52-fight veteran and former world title challenger Jesus Perez in three rounds this past April in his first Maryland fight.

“I’m happy to be back in action,” Remillard said. “After my last fight in Maryland, people were asking when I’d be fighting there again, and now it’s becoming like a second home for me. There was an instant connection. I must have signed 60 pictures. They are real boxing fans and I’m thankful for their support. I was moved by a few injured soldiers there who had come back from the war. I’d never felt anything like that when we spoke and they told me how much they had enjoyed watching me fight. That was special.”

Remillard went into the Perez fight after registering his most impressive win, by 6-round decision against 3-time world champion (34-9-2) Maurico Pastrana, last November. Ruiz (32-22-4, 23 KOs) represents another test for Remillard, who appreciates the boxing maturation process he has undertaken.

Ruiz is a former WBO Latino, WBC CABOFE and WBC Continental Americas champion who has been in the ring against one present champion, Juan Manuel Lopes, as well as four former title holders (Paulie Ayala, Robert Guerrero, Jhonny Gonzalez and Joan Guzman, and two world title challengers (Jason Litzau and Fernando Beltran, Jr.).

“Look at who Ruiz has fought,” Remillard noted. “He’s had more than 50 fights, many against top fighters, and he’s still only 31. The experience I’ll gain fighting him is exactly what I need at this stage of my career. I need to fight and beat a veteran like him to get to the next level. Our weight class has so much talent. Ruiz is another step up the ladder. I’m looking for bigger fights but take ‘em one at a time. Right now, this guy is in my way.”

Remillard is gradually rising in the ratings, moving up to No. 4 in the NABF and No. 6 in the USBA.

“This is a good fight for Matt,” Remillard’s manager Bret Hallenbeck added. “It’s much more than a stay busy fight against a seasoned opponent like Ruiz, who has fought some of the top guys in the division. He’s tougher than anybody Matt has fought to date. Every fight is a step forward for Matt and he’s learned something new each time out. He’s only 23 but getting closer and closer to a really big fight.”

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

STAR BOXING WINS PURSE BID FOR IBF WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP RODRIGUEZ VS. HLATSHWAYO II

Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing won the purse bid for the Vacant IBF Welterweight Championship of the World between Star Boxing's IBF #2 rated Delvin Rodriguez (24-2-2, 14KO) and IBF #3 rated Isaac Hlatshwayo (28-1-1, 10KO). The winning bid was $136,000.00. Star Boxing, who promotes Rodriquez, beat out the bid of Branco Sports Productions, whose bid was $127,500.

Rodriguez and Hlatshwayo are familiar with one another. The two fought back on November 17th, 2008, in Hlatshwayo's home country of South Africa in an official IBF welterweight title eliminator. While the bout was ruled a draw, many who witnessed the fight, including a large majority of the South African press, felt Rodriguez deserved the victory. Now Rodriguez will have a chance to get his revenge and this time with Star winning the bid, the fight will likely take place on U.S. soil.

The fight will be promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and should be officially announced shortly.

No Holds Barred: Igor Gracie, Melvina Lathan

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-06-11T08_40_52-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses on several issues involving the battle for mixed martial arts to become organized like a true sport.

After over a decade of opposing the sport, the New York State Legislature is now in the process of considering legislation to legalize mixed martial arts and place it under the regulation of the New York State Athletic Commission. While a bill to that effect was recently passed in a key Assembly committee, the exploding political crisis in the New York State Senate, which was actually closed down this week due to spiraling in-fighting among the politicians, has jeopardized the passage and enactment of that, and all, legislation.

To get some perspective on what would be required by the New York State Athletic Commission to regulate mixed martial arts, we spoke with its chairperson, Melvina Lathan.

We also outline some of the key ups and down in the checkered history of this commission, as well as explain why the failure of combat sports promoters, then and now, to work together to self-regulate their own events made intervention by the politicians inevitable.

This Friday night, June 12, the Bellator Fighting Championships has its eleventh show in its 12-week series, with this one being held at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. It will be televised in the U.S. the following night, June 13, on the Spanish-language ESPN Deportes network.

The main event features the two finalists in the Bellator eight-man welterweight tournament, Lyman Good and Omar De La Cruz, fighting for the Bellator welterweight title. On the undercard, another member of the legendary Gracie family, Igor Gracie, takes on a fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Vagner Rocha.

We had a chance to speak with Igor Gracie Wednesday afternoon at the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York (http://renzogracie.com), where he is a lead instructor and also trains. We spoke about this upcoming fight as well as his plans to compete regularly in mixed martial arts.

In addition, we offer commentary on some of the positive and negative lessons of the first season of the Bellator Fighting Championships, as well as criticize those in the so-called mixed martial arts "media" who have either downplayed or plain ignored this important organization.

The Dream Team - Naazim Richardson Training Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham For Title Challenge

The battle between two former Cruiserweight World Champions, Steve ‘USS’
Cunningham (IBF) and Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite (WBC), is a mouth
watering prospect in itself, but when you add into the equation that the
winner will earn the right to face current Champion, Tomasz ‘Goral’
Adamek, in the mandatory defense of his IBF title later this year, you
just know that it’s going to be one seriously exciting, all-action affair
with “Fight of the Year” potential plastered all over it in capital
letters.

Now if that isn’t enough to get every boxing fan salivating at the
prospect, the heavily armed destroyer, ‘USS’ Cunningham, announces that he
has added even bigger guns to his already power packed arsenal by
enlisting, “Trainer of the Year” and fight strategy maestro, Naazim
Richardson, to prepare him for the fight.

Richardson, without doubt the hottest property in the business today after
masterminding and coaching the magnificent victories of Bernard Hopkins
over Kelly Pavlik and ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley over Antonio Margarito - in the
latter also famously discovering the tampering of Margarito’s wraps, has
been working with ‘USS’ Cunningham since March this year, at The James
Shuler Memorial Gym in West Philadelphia, as the former Cruiserweight
King prepares for his long awaited IBF title eliminator against former WBC
Cruiserweight Champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, which will be on the
under card of the Joseph Agbeko-Vic Darchinian Bantamweight title fight,
on July 11th.

A clearly pleased ‘USS’ Cunningham expressed his delight at having Brother
Naazim in his corner for the upcoming battle with Guyanan slugger
Braithwaite, "Man, I have known Brother Naazim since the amateurs, I have
always respected him and wanted to work with him, I've known for years
what the boxing world is just now realizing, HE is the best trainer out
there.

I am really excited to be working with him, going to the gym everyday is
like going to college or something... I know his training will take me to
the next level.... If you've liked watching my fights before..stay
tuned..."

Stay tuned, now that’s an understatement! With this being the first time
the all new ‘Dream Team’, of Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and Brother Naazim
Richardson, going into battle side by side making this is a don’t miss,
not a stay tuned!

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham vs. Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite takes place on
the 11th July 2009. Currently the fight is listed, on BoxRec, as being at
the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, Florida but according to Don King
Productions PR supremo, Alan Hopper, this has yet to be confirmed as the
venue.

See you at the Fights.

“HOUSTON, IT’S LIFT OFF!” FOR MALIGNAGGI/DIAZ

All open issues have been resolved regarding the proposed Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Diaz fight on August 22, 2009 in Houston, Texas.

DiBella Entertainment and Golden Boy wrapped up negotiations today and tied up all loose ends for the fight- including the agreed upon weight of 138.5 lbs.

“I told Paulie to lay off his Grandma’s pasta and eat one less cannoli,” said Lou DiBella about Malignaggi dropping an extra pound or two. “Paulie is confident of his speed and boxing ability and is prepared to win in the lion’s den of Houston.”

“This is a fight between two guys looking to prove something. We are both coming of losses in big fights and we are both coming in hungry. Expect fireworks,” said Malignaggi.

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

FERRANTE-BAILEY HEADLINES SHALYTE INAUGURAL CARD ON JULY 10TH AT THE ARENA IN PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia (June 10, 2009)—On Friday night July 10th the action will be as hot inside the ring as it will be outside as Tony Ferrante of Northeast Philadelphia risks his undefeated record when he takes on the tough Billy Bailey for the WBF United States Light Heavyweight championship that will take place at The Arena in South Philadelphia on July 10th.

This show is promoter by former pro fighter Blaine Garner and Shalyte Entertainmnet.

Ferrante of Northeast Philadelphia has a perfect record of 7-0 with four knockouts and has quickly developed into one of the most popular fighters in Philadelphia.

Ferrante is on a three fight knockout streak which includes his last outing when he stopped Anthony Pietantonio (6-1) in five rounds on May 1st at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

Bailey is no stranger to pulling off upsets in Philadelphia. He has a record of 8-3 with three knockouts which includes his last outing where he stopped Philly’s own Brian Cohen (9-1) in Cohen’s backyard of South Philadelphia.

The native of Bakersfield, California has been in with prospects Roger Cantrell (12-1) and Brandon Gonzalez (4-0) so many in the Philadelphia fight scene believe this is a pick’em fight.

The co-feature will be a six round Super Featherweight affair between Coy Evans of Philadelphia and the durable Darrell Martin of Baltimore.

Evans has a record of 4-0-1 with his last outing being a four round unanimous decision over Jose Espinal (5-3-1) in Brooklyn, New York on February 2nd.

Although he is from Baltimore, Martin is more or less a Philadelphia fighter as six of his thirteen (4-9, 1 KO) fights have come inside the Philadelphia city limits.

Martin scored his career best win when he stopped Jules Blackwell (8-1-2) in three rounds last December at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

The ladies will be front and center on July 10 as two big bouts featuring females will take place.

Jackie Davis, 1-0 with one knockout will look to build on her pro debut knockout on March 13th when she battles Rachel Clark (2-1, 2 KO’s) of Colombia, South Carolina in a four round Welterweight bout.

The very Popular Olivia Fonseca (2-2-2, 1 KO) of Philadelphia returns after a ten month hiatus when she takes on the capable Lisa Bolin (2-2, 2 KO’s) of South Carolina in a four round Welterweight bout.

Fresh off his exciting pro debut on May 8th, Derrick Webster (1-0) of Glassboro, New Jersey will take on Roger Locklear (1-2) of South Carolina in a four round Middleweight bout.

In a battle of pro debuting Heavyweight, Kareem Harrison of Philadelphia battles Winston Thorpe of North Carolina.

Also making his pro debut will be Angel Ocassio in a four round Lightweight bout.

THE ARENA IS LOCATED ON THE CORNER OF SWANSON AND RITNER STREETS IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA

See you at the Fights.

No Holds Barred: Rolles Gracie on Jiu-Jitsu and Health, and Holt Richardson on Green Tea and Health

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins a series
of shows which will focus on the health crisis, particularly in
America. We offer some ideas about what people can do to live a
healthier lifestyle while also fighting the profiteers who provide
poor but increasingly expensive health care.

Key to a healthy lifestyle are diet and exercise.

For the issue of exercise, we spoke with Rolles Gracie (http://
rollesgracie.com), who is the lead instructor at the new Renzo Gracie
Jiu-Jitsu Academy (http://renzogracie.com) in Holmdel, New Jersey.
This facility not only offers top-notch instruction in combat sports
including jiu-jitsu, but also some general training facilities for
everyone from beginners to world champions.

For the issue of diet, we spoke with Holt Richardson of the North
American branch of the Japanese-based Ito En (http://itoen.com/)
company, which manufactures and distributes green tea beverage
products as well as numerous other beverages. We spoke with him at the
Japan Day 2009 (http://japandaynyc.org/) celebration in Central Park
in New York on May 31, 2009. Japan, it should be noted, has, according
to the United Nations, the longest life expectancy of any country in
the world.

The World Boxing Council has officially named Sergio Martinez the welterweight champion of the world. Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KOs) won the interim version of the title last October, stopping well-regarded veteran Alex Bunema in 8 rounds.

In a statement released by the WBC on May 20, President Jose Sulaiman praised former champion Vernon Forrest for his commitment to the sport, but was adamant about the need for Martinez to take the reigns as champion in the division.

“Sergio Martinez is one of the most loyal fighters I have ever met as WBC President,” said Sulaiman. “[Sergio] is now regarded as a new sensation of boxing and I am sure that he will proudly represent the WBC.”

Obtaining ownership of the title was a long time coming for Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KOs).

After winning the interim title 8 months ago, Martinez has been trying to get Forrest in the ring, biding his time with a defense vs. Kermit Cintron in February. Once Forrest pulled out of their scheduled August 1st contest, the WBC made its ruling.

“I’m very proud of the WBC,” said Martinez. “I would’ve been happier winning the title in the ring, but I deserved this honor.”

With the famous green belt now solely in his possession, Martinez, widely regarded as one of boxing’s budding stars, is ready to take on all comers in the welterweight division.

“I’m not running away from anyone,” said Martinez. “Now that I have the green belt, I plan on keeping it for a long time. And if Vernon ever decides to get his title back, I’ll be there.”

No one is happier to hear those words than his promoter, Lou DiBella, who is ready to move his fighter’s career forward.

“It’s a pleasure to promote a fighter who will take on any challenge,” said DiBella. “We’re pursuing all opportunities for Sergio Martinez.”

There is still a chance the bout with Forrest will happen. As part of the WBC’s ruling Forrest is entitled to a shot at his old belt if and when he deems himself healthy enough for active competition.

Team Martinez is not only prepared to finally step into the ring with Forrest, but is welcoming the opportunity to get their long awaited showdown.

“Sergio is looking to defend his title anytime, anywhere,” said Martinez manager Sampson Lewkowicz. “If Vernon Forrest decides to step to the plate, Sergio will be waiting for him.”

See you at the Fights.
