GOODWIN MAIN EVENTS LEON ‘SOLID’ WILLIAMS Vs. TONY ‘CONQUEROR’ CONQUEST Southern Area Cruiserweight Championship 7th July 2012 @ York Hall, London

Former Champ Williams Ready For July 7th Title Showdown With Conquest.

After three false starts, the long awaited showdown, between former British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams and Southern Area Champ Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest, is finally set to take place, on the Olivia Goodwin promoted ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall on Saturday 7th July.

The last time this highly anticipated Clash of the Titans was due to take place was back in January, as Williams’ first defense of his British Crown, however Conquest was forced to withdraw due to a viral infection.

With Conquest out Williams instead defended against Nottingham’s Shane McPhilbin.

For eleven rounds Williams totally dominated the proceedings, including sending McPhilbin to the canvas twice. However after just thirty seconds of the final round things took a dramatic turn, for the worse, after McPhilbin landed a powerful clubbing shot, to the back of the defending Champ’s head, which ultimately lead to the fight being stopped and a new British Champion crowned.

With no quick rematch with McPhilbin, or a shot at current British Champ Enzo Maccarinelli on the horizon, the only way Williams could get back into the Championship mix this year would be to challenge his good friend Conquest.

A situation that wasn’t lost on the former Champ, as he made clear when he spoke briefly, following a training session at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, earlier. “Yeah it’s a stepping stone, I know I gave up the Southern Area title before I beat Rob Norton and became British Champ, but it does lead to bigger and better things.

God willing, I’ll get the chance to get my Lonsdale belt back after beating Tony on the 7th.

No make that Johnny willing, Johnny, my manager Johnny Eames, will do the business side for me, I’ve just got to win.

Preparation has been very good, sparring has been the best. I’m Dereck Chisora’s main sparring partner, so that’s good experience and I learn from it all the time.

This is really going to help me with the fight. Dereck’s a very big, strong guy and after all this work Tony will feel like a lightweight in comparison - Thank you Dereck Chisora.

I’m not trashing Tony, he’s a good friend of mine and a very good boxer, but there’s no friendship when you step in the ring, you fight, and that’s what we’re going to do - fight.

Team Solid is back...and climbing the ladder to the top. Team Solid all day, every Day...Yeah.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest for the Southern Area Cruiserweight title co-headlines Olivia Goodwin’s ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 7th July 2012.

LeGrand Joins Team Fight to Walk!‏

Eric LeGrand is the newest member of Team Fight to Walk.
Created in 2011 by boxer and West Point graduate Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson, Team Fight to Walk’s goal is to raise awareness within the boxing community as well as the entire nation about the importance of bringing Clinical Trials to the United States to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. In association with Team Fight to Walk, Melson, who has a record of 8-1 with 4 knockouts, donates all of his fight purses to Justadollarplease.org to help support the trial.
A New Jersey native, LeGrand was one of the Garden State's top recruits and earned a scholarship to play football at Rutgers in the fall of 2008. On October 16, 2010, the 6’2 275 lb Avenel native severely injured his spinal cord while attempting to tackle Malcolm Brown of Army. The two violently collided and LeGrand remained on the ground for more than three minutes before medical personnel took him off the field.
LeGrand was transported to the ICU at Hackensack University Medical Center, where doctors determined he was a quadriplegic. Doctors told him that every day would be a severe struggle but LeGrand refused to give up. Within three months, LeGrand was able to move his shoulders and felt sensation throughout his body. In July 2011, after working tirelessly during rehabilitation sessions, LeGrand stood upright with the aid of a walker.
Later that year, LeGrand led Rutgers onto the field prior to their game against West Virginia. Sports Illustrated readers voted the best moment in 2011. On May 2, 2012, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now coached by former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, signed the courageous 21-year-old to an honorary contract.
"I’m very happy to be a part of the team and a part of the journey to find a cure for spinal cord injuries,” stated LeGrand. “Everything happens for a reason and miracles happen every day.”
“Eric is the ultimate fighter,” said Melson, who is connected to LeGrand through Dr. Patricia Morton and the Rutgers Foundation. “My best friend Christan Zaccagnino was paralyzed in a diving accident when she was a child and I’ve spent countless hours with her, so I truly understand what Eric goes through to the best of my ability without actually being in a wheelchair myself. He’s an inspiration to people from all walks of life and his inner-strength is unbelievable. We’ve received an excellent response from the boxing community and our roster of fighters supporting the cause continues to grow, but Eric’s presence will help us reach new heights!”
LeGrand will be honored for his courageousness July 11 at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles and Melson’s next bout is tentatively scheduled for August in New York City.
In addition to LeGrand and Melson, Team Fight to Walk is comprised of former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr., 2008 US Olympians Demetrius “Boo” Andrade and Shawn Estrada along with prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Will “Power” Rosinsky, Floriano “Italiano” Pagliara, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

Hector Camacho Jr. Looks To Begin Title Run Saturday Night

Hector Camacho Jr. Looks To Begin Title Run Saturday Night

This Saturday night Hector Camacho Jr. will be stepping into the ring against Bernardo Guereca and looking to get back on track to working towards a potential middleweight title fight.

Camacho Jr. (53-4-1, 28 KO) is 10-1 in his last 11 fights, with his only loss coming at the hands of David Lemieux for the WBC International Middleweight Title. Coming into this fight on a 16 month layoff, Camacho Jr. is ready to get into the ring.

“I am very excited for Saturday night,” said Camacho. “We have had countless fights fall through, and then I dealt with the hand injury. But everything’s great now. I had a great training camp. Guereca is a strong fighter and also a fellow southpaw. I can’t wait to get in there and go to work.”

When Camacho Jr. is not training he donates a large part of his time to working with inner city kids and is a Board Member for the nonprofit organization Find A Dream.

“Find A Dream is a great organization with the best interest of the kids in mind,” said Camacho Jr. “They strive to help build facilities for inner city youth to go to, to keep them off the streets and out of gangs. Too many kids nowadays lack direction or any kind of mentorship, and Find A Dream provides them with that outlet.”

Camacho Jr. is joined by an all-star team at Find A Dream, including former Olympic gold medalist and heavyweight champion Ray Mercer, former cruiserweight champion Bobby Czyz, Don Steele, amongst a few others.

Find A Dream is adamant about its boxers and Board members staying active within their community and portraying a positive image and role. In upcoming months they will be hosting several events to spread awareness and promote their cause.

Hector Camacho Jr. will be going to battle against Bernardo Guereca this Saturday night at La Villita Maverick Plaza in San Antonio Texas.

Former World Champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO's) of Ventura, Calif., former NABF Champion Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17 KO's) of Riverside, Calif., former Three-Time World Champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto and hard-hitting, top rated contender Lucas Matthysse took part in a final media workout on Wednesday at Fortune Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, just days before they do battle on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, June 23 live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

The vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Welterweight title is on the line in the 12-round Ortiz vs. Lopez bout while Soto (59-7-2, 34 KO’s), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, will battle Trelew, Argentina native Matthysse (30-2, 28 KO’s) in 12-round co-featured bout for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight title.

VICTOR ORTIZ:

“Fans can expect a great show on Saturday night. There haven't been many changes in this camp. I have always had a goal to be one of the greatest fighters of all time and that goal is still there. I have trained hard for a good fight and I am ready.

“Josesito is a hell of a fighter. I’m not taking anything away from him, but right now he is stepping into the wrong den. I will show it Saturday night.”

JOSESITO LOPEZ:

“I just recently started watching tapes. It does make a difference. I used to just let my coach watch, but it does give a clearer idea about what you have to look forward to. Training has been going great. I moved up in weight and it’s given me that much more energy. I’ve had the energy, power, and strength throughout camp to not have to slow down.

“I am at a position where there are bigger things I want to achieve, and that’s motivation right there. On Saturday it all starts. On Saturday the smarter fighter will win.”

Regarding the Canelo Alvarez vs. Ortiz announcement:

“I find it disrespectful to announce the fight ahead of time, but if anything it gives me more motivation to achieve what I want to achieve. I think (the result) is going to surprise everyone.”

HUMBERTO SOTO:

“I am a very professional fighter. I feel very good at 140 pounds. Whoever said I lost speed and power, well that’s not true. I proved with my last three fights in this division that I can handle it.”

With regards to his game plan:

“Things change in the ring. I have my game plan, but once the bell rings I am going to see what’s in front of me, but I always prepare to win. I know Matthysse has as well, so it’s going to make for a very good fight.”

LUCAS MATTHYSSE:

“I expect to win by KO. I think I was robbed against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in the United States, so expect a KO. I don’t want it going to the judges on Saturday, so expect a good fight.

“I respect Soto because he was a three-time world champion. He comes from lighter divisions and my strength will help me win.

“I trained in Junin, Buenos Aires, for two months. I sparred with nine sparring partners. I am in the best shape of my life.”

FINAL PRESSER QUOTES + PHOTOS - 'VIVA DON KING II'‏

Tony Grano (NABF No. 1-ranked heavyweight): “We chose to fight DaVarryl Williamson because he has had a very successful career and we need to fight guys like him. I need to fight the best to move up in this sport. I look forward to winning the NABF title.”

DaVarryl Williamson (Former world No. 1 heavyweight): “I feel like I have enough gas left in my tank at age 43 for a final push towards another world heavyweight championship fight. I have been successful in South Florida in the past. I won the NABF heavyweight title by beating Eliecer Castillo in Tampa back in 2004. I look forward to winning it again on Saturday night.”

Joey Hernandez (WBC U.S. super welterweight champion and WBO & IBF No. 10/WBC No. 14, fighting Brandon Baue): “Getting away from Miami to the King Training Camp in Orwell, Ohio, was the best thing for me. I plan on putting on a great show. If I win on Saturday and Cory Spinks defeats Cornelius Bundrage next Saturday, I might be fighting him for a world title, which is my goal.”

Angelo Santana (Undefeated WBA No. 15 lightweight contender, fighting Justin Savi): “I am very prepared for this fight. I am undefeated and this is an important fight in my career. Justin Savi is the best fighter I have ever faced. I must be at my best as I move up in level of competition with each fight towards a world championship.”

Justin Savi (Former WBC Silver Champion): I come here to fight. I must say, I will fight my best. Young Angelo Santana is a good fighter with no losses, but my experience will be too big of an obstacle for him.”

Omar Henry (Undefeated junior middleweight): “I’ve had four opponents for this event. Most of my fights are won by knockout. I like to knock people out, and that’s what I plan to do on Saturday. It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me on Saturday, I will put them down.”

Thomas Snow (WBA No. 15 contender): I have fought down from 136 pounds to 115. I’m the biggest and best 115-pounder out there right now. Get your cameras ready—doesn’t matter what technology—you’ll want to be taking pictures. I’m the only American ranked by the WBA at 115 pounds, so I appreciate your support.”

THE ELITE HEAT BOXING TEAM, TO CALL THEM SPECIAL IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT

THE ELITE HEAT BOXING TEAM, TO CALL THEM SPECIAL IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT

The Elite Heat Boxing Team is made up of an extremely special group of inner city kids who have chosen the sport of boxing as their focus and have obtained monumental success on a national level. Based out of the Elite Heat Boxing Gym in Newark NJ, the kids who make up “the team” can be seen on a daily basis honing their craft with the dedication and drive rarely seen in any athletes other than the most successful world champions on the planet. Their days start at the crack of dawn where these kids are literally doing road work with the vigor and passion that it takes to be a champion. We are talking about 8 year olds – 14 year olds that have made the commitment to focus their energy on something positive, stay off the streets & in addition to their intense training regimen they are required to attack their school work with the same dedication and intensity.

In 2011 The Elite Heat Boxing Team had 5 Team members win National Championships at the Junior Golden Gloves Tournament in Mesquite Nevada at The Casablanca Sports Complex. This unprecedented level of success was the culmination of all the hard work and sacrifice that these kids put in for a year leading up to the National’s. This year “The Team” is looking to improve upon last year’s results and aim to have 17 Team member’s win National Championships at the Junior Golden Gloves in July 2012.

Between the 17 Team Member’s, coaches & chaperones, there are many airline tickets, uniforms, equipment, hotel rooms, meals, rental vans and entrance fees that need to be paid for. I cannot think of a better, more positive cause to donate to. I am asking you to look into your hearts and open up your wallets to assist these special kids in their quest to become National Champions. The truth is whether they win or lose at the Junior Golden Gloves in July, all these kids are already champions. The courage, discipline and honor they display on a daily basis to get to this point is truly remarkable. Please join The Elite Heat Boxing Team as a sponsor/donor, it feels good to be a part of the winning team!

No Holds Barred: Mike Tyson, Keisha Morrisey

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the June 18 news conference in New York featuring former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, director Spike Lee, and producer James L. Nederlander to announce the opening of the show called "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth". This one-man, autobiographical show, featuring Mike Tyson and also marking the Broadway directorial debut for Lee, will run for a limited engagement from July 31 to August 5 at the Longacre Theater in Manhattan's Theater District. At the news conference, the media present participated in an extended question-and-answer session with the speakers.

After the news conference, we spoke with our correspondent Keisha Morrisey, who has known Mike Tyson for over 25 years. We discussed whether or not this show, which premiered in Las Vegas in March but may be altered for Broadway, will actually provide the undisputed truth about the controversial life and career of Mike Tyson both inside and outside the ring.

Is Richard Pierson The Most Feared Super Middleweight Out There?

In addition to his consistency within the ring, one thing that stands out in super middleweight Richard Pierson’s career is the number of fights that continue to fall through for the rising star.

Last week Pierson was supposed to go to battle for the WBC FECARBOX Super Middleweight Title, but never had a chance to throw a punch as three opponents fell through.

First it was Gary Jones, then David Adotey Alottey, and last Aaron ‘Homicide’ Mitchell…all three planned to throw hands with Pierson, but when it came time to step up to the plate, no fighter followed through due to various reasons.

Throughout his career Pierson has faced his share of adversity inside the squared circle and having fights fall through, yet the emerging super middleweight has stayed focused and determined to work towards a world title shot.

Early on he found himself on the grand stage atop boxing’s Mecca’s in Vegas and Atlantic City, thrown into the ring as an ‘opponent’, and regularly coming out the victor.

“Everything happens for a reason,” said Pierson. “Gary Jones has a record of 22 wins and 2 losses; he had no reason to pull out. I believe he was coming out to challenge me but he just couldn't make the 168 pound limit. Danil of Ghana has 18 wins, 8 by KO and 2 losses; he made it to America but sadly he suffered a very bad cut above his left eye during his last sparring session. Aaron Mitchell is 27-1 with 21 KO and is no chump; he didn't pull out. Something went wrong with his meds. None of the fighters I was supposed to fight pulled out; it just wasn't in God’s plan for me to compete for the belt that night. My future isn't made by man so I leave it all in God's hands.”

Pierson prides himself on his fast and heavy hands, and has never stepped into the ring against an opponent with a losing record, something few fighters can say.

“I stay focused with the strength of my children and the positive people that are around me. Of course I would love to have had fought for the WBC FECARBOX Title and walked into my house with it but things happen. I am not upset nor did the cancellation of my fight affect me. I am still happy to even have the WBC look at me and give a chance; it shows me all my hard work is starting to pay off. I love boxing and finally boxing is starting to show me love back. I will have the belts when it’s my time.”

“This kid cannot get a fight,” said Lou Esa, former heavyweight fighter and Pierson’s manager. “We got guys who agree to fight him, but then they end up falling through. He’s a fierce puncher. Four times he was named the ‘B’ opponent, and each time he knocked out the ‘A’ fighter. Now everybody calls him ‘the career killer’. We are trying to get an opponent now for him for July 27 on ESPN.”

'VIVA DON KING II'; Media Workout Quotes Monday, June 18, 2012 Hard Rock Live Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Fla.

Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King was joined by many of the principal fighters on Saturday’s “Viva Don King II” boxing card at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., for media workouts today inside Hard Rock Live, the same venue where the fights will be held.

Heavyweight fighters Tony “TNT” Grano (19-2-1, 15 KOs), from Hartford, Conn., and DaVarryl “Touch of Sleep” Williamson (27-6, 23 KOs), from Denver, both participated in today’s workouts and will fight in the main event on Saturday. Grano is the No. 1-ranked NABF contender and Williamson is a former top-ranked heavyweight, and the winner will win the vacant NABF title.

“I’ve done over 50 rounds of sparring with five different professional heavyweights,” Grano said of his training camp. “I give special thanks to WBA cruiserweight champion Guillermo Jones who came and worked with me.

“This fight with Williamson means everything to me. It’s my time to shine.”

Williamson is looking forward to the challenge from Grano.

“I felt like a champion during training camp in Denver,” Williamson said. “I saw Grano on You Tube and checked on him with people in boxing. The good news I will not have to send out a search party looking for Grano. He’ll be right there in front of me. He comes to fight.”

WBC U.S. super welterweight champion Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez (21-1-1, 12 KOs), from Miami, will take on Brandon “The Business” Baue (12-6, 10 KOs), from Troy, Mo.

“I spent eight weeks training for this fight, the last three secluded at the King Training Camp just outside Cleveland,” Hernandez said. “I wanted to spar with the bigger guys.

“I know if I win my promoter Don King is going to put me in even bigger fights, so I am determined to win convincingly.”

Undefeated WBA No. 15-ranked lightweight Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (12-0, 9 KOs), a Cuban fighting out of Miami, will face the toughest test of his young career against former WBC Silver champion Justin “Le Voodoo” Savi (26-1, 18 KOs), from Cotonou, Benin.

“I have a new physical trainer,” Santana said. “I’m stepping up in competition, so I need to perfect all of my skills.

“It’s great to be trained by former Cuban Olympic coach Jorge Rubio. He splits his time between me and Guillermo Rigondeaux. He is a great coach and I feel I am improving every day.”

Also appearing on the card is undefeated junior middleweight Omar “Oh!” Henry (11-0-1, 9 KOs), from Chicago. He’ll be facing Walter “2 Guns” Wright (14-3, 7 KOs), from Seattle, Wash.

“This is my first 10-rounder, on a big Don King-promoted card,” Henry said after training in San Jose for this fight.

“I want to show everyone my skills. I feel real strong. My motivation is to look impressive.”
