BJ FLORES WANTS JOSE LUIS HERRERA‏

(From February 8th UD12 Darnell Wilson.)

PHOENIX, AZ- Undefeated cruiserweight contender BJ Flores watched intently this past Friday night as prospect Aaron Williams battled Columbian veteran Jose Luis Herrera on ESPN2 in the main event from the Twin Rivers Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Speaking after a Sunday morning training run in Phoenix, Arizona, Flores stated; “It was an outstanding win for Herrera and I congratulate him. He stayed in the fight after he was hurt by Williams in the first and was able to earn a terrific victory.

I was mostly watching to see Aaron Williams fight. His side had called me out earlier this year after their win over Andre Purlette and I hadn’t seen him fight past the two rounds."

Continued Flores, “Aaron had him out in the first round and really should have finished him in the last twenty seconds but he seemed to back off. He’s only 22 but his inexperience really showed in this fight. He can definitely come back but it’s important not to get ahead of yourself in this game.

He needs to realize that early knockouts are not always going to come and there will be times when you’ll have to box your way to a decision. In boxing things can always change quickly in the ring."

In regards to Herrera, Flores said, “I’d love to fight him; it’s a great ESPN2 level fight for the summer. With us both coming off big wins (Flores beat Darnell Wilson by unanimous decision on February 8th on ESPN2) it’s a natural for us to get in the ring together and fight for my USBA title."

The cruiserweight division is heating up, Herrera is now a new player and the fans would see a terrific fight between the two of us. I guarantee his record of never seeing the “finish line” would continue.”

BJ Flores, 21-0-1 (13KO's) is currently worked ranked # 2 by the IBF, #7 by the WBO and # 8 by the WBA.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada fighting again on ESPN2 FNF this week

PROVIDENCE 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada fights this week on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights for the second time in seven weeks when he faces Carolina heavyweight champion Moultrie “Jack Hammer” Witherspoon (14-1, 8 KOs) in an 8-round Special Heavyweight Attraction co-feature on “Ring Warriors,” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), live from Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Providence native Estrada (12-1, 2 KOs), rated No. 9 by the NABO, is coming off of arguably his most impressive victory as a pro, taking a one-sided 10-round decision from former NABO/NABA/WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion Lance “Mount” Whitaker (32-5-1, 27 KOs) in their April 4 ESPN2 FNF show headliner.

On his personal mission to become heavyweight champion of the world, Estrada has fought anybody his promoter, Jimmy Burchfield, has put in the ring with him and none of them has had a losing record (203-73-9 combined record of his opponents when they fought Estrada).

“I’m not looking past Witherspoon,” Estrada said. “He’s coming to beat me, but it’s not happening in my house. I will be world heavyweight champion someday and he’s in my way. I’m real excited to be fighting on ESPN2 Friday Night fights for the second time in seven weeks. Fans all over can see what skills I take into the ring. I’m challenging anybody who believes they can stop me to step up to the plate. Arreola is fighting Witherspoon (June 21). Give me the winner and I’ll show the world who is the best heavyweight prospect, Jason Estrada.

“I dominated the United States amateur scene for years and I’m going to do the same as a pro on the way to becoming heavyweight champ. I’m willing to fight anybody to prove it – prospect, contender, veteran, comebacker, champion or title-holder moving up from cruiserweight. Anybody!”

The 27-year-old Estrada was one of the most highly decorated American amateur boxers ever, compiling an amazing 261-14 record in U.S. competition, becoming the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row. Highlights of his amateur career included representing the United States in the 2004 Olympics and capturing a gold medal at the 2003 Pan-American Games.

During his tremendous amateur career, Estrada defeated some of today’s leading professionals including former world title challenger DaVarryl “The Touch of Sleep” Williamson (24-5, 20 KOs), unbeatens Malik Scott (30-0, 10 KOs) and Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes (28-0-2, 24 KOs), Malcolm “The Showstopper” Tann (23-4, 12 KOs), and Felix “Bad News” Cora, Jr. (18-2, 9 KOs).

Tickets for “Ring Warriors” are priced at $25.00, $35.00, $50.00, (Bronze), $65.00 (Silver), $100.00 (Gold) and limited $150.00 (Jimmy’s Platinum Club) and are available to purchase by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Twin River Event Center (100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, RI), or any TicketMaster location. Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) or Twin River Events Center (877.82.RIVER/ www.twinriver.com) for more information. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first bout at 7 PM/ET.

COV GLOVE TO BE FEATURED THIS FRIDAY ON ESPN 2 "FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS"

PHILADELPHIA- COV GLOVE will be featured this Friday night as Aaron Williams and Jose Luis Herrera headline a night of boxing in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

COV GLOVE is a synthetic material that covers the tape on the wrist. It protects from tape coming loose which in turn stops action in fights. COV GLOVE also protects from the tape scratching against the eyes.

"We got great response after the first card that the product was used on ESPN 2 in late March." said COV GLOVE founder, David Price.

"Since then I have had a lot of commissions and promoters call me and ask how they would go about implementing the product in their fights and states. The fighters that have used it have commented to me about how they feel and how stylish they are. When Teddy Atlas, who is very concerned with safety issues in boxing, mentioned the product during the Kassim Ouma-Corneilius Bundrage show validates COV GLOVE."

The Williams-Herrera show will be shown all over the country on ESPN 2

Quotes from May 21 press conference for June 4 show featuring Yusaf Mack-Daniel Judah and James Moore-Gabriel Rosado in Brooklyn, N.Y. Show on ESPN 2

The show, which will be televised on ESPN 2’s Wednesday Night Fights, is being promoted by Winky Wright Promotions, in association with Thomas Gallagher Productions. Wright, a former world champion, and Gallagher, who starred in season one of “The Contender” reality television series, will both be in attendance.

The main event will feature Yusaf Mack, 24-2-2 (15 KOS), of New York via Philadelphia vs. Daniel Judah, 22-2-3 (10 KOS), of Brooklyn. At stake will be the vacant NABA light heavyweight title.

Mack is not the least bit concerned about fighting Judah, of Brooklyn’s famed Judah family, on his home turf. “I like big challenges, so the fact that he is so well known in Brooklyn gives me more incentive to win,” said Mack. “I’m glad the fight will be televised on ESPN 2 because I plan on having a knockout performance.”

Opening the telecast will be the enormously popular James Moore, 15-0 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens. He takes on Gabriel Rosado, 9-2 (6 KOS), of Philadelphia. In Rosado’s lone New York appearance, he avenged a loss to Joshua Onyango. Both of Rosado’s losses were by close decision.

Moore, a veteran of 314 amateur fights and the former captain of the Irish national amateur team that included John Duddy and Andy Lee, is coming off his biggest win to date, a 10 round decision over J.C. Candelo at Madison Square Garden.

“I am in fantastic shape right now and really looking forward to fighting on ESPN 2,” said Moore, who just returned from Sicily where he helped IBF junior welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi prepare for his May 24 title bout. “This is going to be my breakout year, so I plan on putting on a really good show on June 4.”

For tickets call Gleason’s Gym at 718-797-2872. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities contact Tommy Gallagher at 917-774-3517.

Quotes from May 21st Press Conference for June 4th Brooklyn Show‏

The Aviator Sports & Recreation Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. will host its third boxing event in three months on June 4. The show, which will be televised on ESPN 2’s Wednesday Night Fights, is being promoted by Winky Wright Promotions and Thomas Gallagher Productions, in association with Sal Musemeci’s Final Forum.

It will be headlined by Yusaf Mack, 24-2-2 (15 KOS), of New York via Philadelphia, vs. Daniel Judah, 22-2-3 (10 KOS), of Brooklyn.

In the co-feature, the extremely popular James Moore, 15-0 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, will battle Gabriel Rosado, 9-2 (6 KOS), of Philadelphia.

At the May 21 press conference at Jack Demsey’s Irish pub in midtown Manhattan, Mack said he wasn’t concerned with fighting someone from the famed Judah family in their hometown. Judah is the brother of former world champion Zab Judah.

“This just feeds my fire,” said Mack, whose beloved father passed away last month. “I’m coming to fight and I’m coming to win. I will be victorious.”

“This is the perfect fight for me,” countered Judah. “My family is not fighting this fight. It’s just me. I will hold my ground, and I will win.”

Moore not only stated that he is eager to battle Rosado, he is also willing to accept bouts with James Kirkland and Mexico’s Alfredo Angulo, both of whom scored big victories on HBO’s Boxing After Dark this past weekend.

“I’m looking to make my move, so I’m willing to fight any of these undefeated prospects,” said Moore, a veteran of 314 amateur fights and the former captain of the Irish national amateur team. “I don’t want easy fights. The bigger the challenges, the more I want the fights.”

HBO’s unofficial judge, Harold Lederman, was in attendance and said that the huge buzz about Moore is well-deserved. “He’s exciting and he has quick hands and good power,” said Lederman. “He’s one of the best junior middleweight prospects in the world, and he would be a great opponent for either Kirkland or Angulo.”

The Aviator Sports & Recreation Center is located on Flatbush Avenue, just south of the Belt Parkway, Exit 11S, Brooklyn, NY 11234.

For tickets call Gleason’s Gym at 718-797-2872. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities contact Tommy Gallagher at 917-774-3517.

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES TO STREAM LIVE FROM PACQUIAO-DIAZ BRUNCH ON WEDNESDAY‏

CHICAGO, IL, - The Chicago Sun-Times will stream live on Wednesday morning from the Chicago media brunch for boxing superstar MANNY PACQUIAO and World Boxing Council champion DAVID DIAZ as they promote their showdown set for June 28th at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The media brunch will start at 10:30AM (Chicago time) and will feature interviews with Pacquiao, Diaz and Bob Arum, head of Top Rank Incorporated.

The stream can be viewed at The Chicago Sun-Times website on their sports page at www.suntimes.com/sports. Fans can also visit the site ahead of time to pose questions for the participants.

When two explosive world champions at the top of their game mix it up for the world title, it’s a “Lethal Combination!” Newly-crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion MANNY PACQUIAO and WBC lightweight champion DAVID DIAZ will battle in a 12-round rumble with Diaz’s title at stake.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions, Pacquiao vs. Diaz will take place Saturday, June 28, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. PDT.

Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs.Diaz, priced at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100, can be
purchased at the Mandalay Bay box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall, and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000 or Mandalay Bay (702) 632-7580. Tickets are also available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

“This will be my hardest-fought battle,” said Pacquiao. “It’s been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division’s world champion. I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I’m expecting to see the same firepower out of him when we meet. But this is my drive for five. Five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for my people of the Philippines.”

"Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans like Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Larios and Solis. That's why they call him “The Mexicutioner,” said Diaz. “I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He’s a great champion but he’s fighting in my division – lightweight. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him."

“Two world champions, at the top of their game, matching each other in speed, power, stamina and courage is a recipe for a great fight,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Manny has never felt the power thrown at this weight class just as Diaz has never gone toe-to-toe with such a human dynamo. But Manny possesses an inner strength from his fellow countrymen the likes I have never seen as a promoter with over 40 years of experience.

Manny is more than a national treasure to the Philippines, he is the very symbol of its national pride. He doesn’t fight for himself, he fights for his people. It’s a responsibility that no other athlete could, or attempt to, accomplish.”

“Boxing fans recognize that in Pacquiao vs. Diaz you have one of the sport’s best fighters and biggest attractions moving up in weight to challenge a bigger, stronger champion,” said HBOPPV’s Mark Taffet. “It’s a very intriguing proposition and we look forward to the event."

Dubbed "Republica Enemy No. 1," Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003 including Erik Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Marco Antonio Barrera (TKO 11, W 12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W 12, D 12), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), Hector Velazquez (TKO 6) and Jorge Solis (KO 8). Pacquiao was named 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Morales, as well as his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Larios. The hard-hitting southpaw has won 22 of his last 23 bouts including 2007 victories over Barrera and Solis. Pacquiao’s 12-round split decision victory over Marquez earlier this year not only avenged a disputed draw from their 2004 battle, it also made Pacman a four-division world champion.

Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, will be making the second defense of his title. He successfully defended it against the three-division world champion Morales last summer winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over the future Hall of Famer. Although behind on the scorecards early, Diaz remained cool and rallied before the raucous hometown Chicago crowd of 10,000 to capture the decision. He swept the championship rounds and won the decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112. With the victory, Diaz cemented his place among the best lightweights in the sport and one of the most popular and respected athletes in the sports-crazy town of Chicago. A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, Diaz, with 12 years of experience as a professional, is more than prepared to handle the pressures that come with battling boxing’s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter.

The Pacquiao vs. Diaz pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to 71 million pay-per-view homes. Joan Guzman Slams Lightweight Champion Nate Campbell‏ JOAN GUZMAN: ‘NATE CAMPBELL, YOUR HONEYMOON IS OVER, I’M COMING FOR YOU’

SAN DIEGO, Calif.– Two-division champion Joan Guzman has made it no secret that he intends to win a title in the lightweight division. He already has an opponent in mind; the lightweight kingpin and always colorful Nate Campbell.

Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs), who got married last Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., is currently on his honeymoon.

“Everyone has seen the picture of Nate and his wife in their cute, white, wedding outfits,” said Guzman, who has a record of 28-0, with 17 knockouts. “I hope they’re enjoying their honeymoon because Nate’s honeymoon at the top of the lightweight division is going to end once he finds the courage to fight me.”

Guzman may or may not get his wish since Campbell’s team is in a WBO purse bid with Campbell’s mandatory challenger Joel Casamayor. The purse bid is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27.

“I don’t know why Nate is considering fighting Casamayor,” said Guzman, who is exclusively promoted by San Diego-based Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “I think he’s afraid of me. I’ll make Nate look so bad that he’ll retire after I wipe the floor with him.

“I guess I can understand why Nate doesn’t want to fight me. Twenty-eight boxers have tried to beat me and none of them came close to succeeding.

“I honestly thought Nate was a serious fighter, but I’m starting to question that. If Nate wants a real challenge, he knows where to find me.”

ABOUT SYCUAN RINGSIDE PROMOTIONS

Sycuan Ringside Promotions has many notable boxers in its stable, including undefeated former World Boxing Organization junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman, World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez, World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero, former WBC welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir, former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Julio Diaz, lightweight sensation Jorge Paez Jr., undefeated cruiserweight prospect Shawn Hawk and once-beaten, super middleweight prospect Henry Buchanan.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions is led by Glenn Quiroga, president; Willie Tucker, executive vice president; and Scott Woodworth, vice president.

No Holds Barred: Warrior Culture, Country Music and MMA, Pay-Per-View Model, IFL, Ryan Schultz, Dan Miller, Roy Nelson

No Holds Barred: Warrior Culture, Country Music and MMA, Pay-Per-View Model, IFL, Ryan Schultz, Dan Miller, Roy Nelson

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-05-20T20_26_25-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the beating received this past Friday by former Chris Byrd in his ESPN2 bout with Shaun George. Byrd, a former heavyweight champion, was fighting at light heavyweight, and was stopped in the ninth round after looking drained and getting battered throughout the fight.

We next focus on some important correspondence from a listener who understands the connection between the combat sports, the need for a warrior culture by people who are oppressed and downtrodden, and life in general.

Among the other issues discussed are the appearance of EliteXC fighter Kimbo Slice on the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS, the flaws in the pay-per-view model for the combat sports, and what the International Fight League needs to do to improve their fortunes.

Next, we speak with the three IFL fighters who were victorious in their championship fights this past Friday, May 16, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. They are lightweight champion Ryan Schultz, who won a unanimous decision over Deividas Taurosevicius, to retain his belt; Dan Miller, who captured the middleweight belt with a first-round kneebar submission over Ryan McGivern; and Roy Nelson, who retained his heavyweight title with a first-round TKO over Brad Imes.

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by discussing the fragmented title picture in the 140-pound division, which again is hurting whatever credibility boxing has left, and the need for title unification. This past Wednesday, May 14, in New York, Frankie Figueroa (19-2, 13 KOs) successfully defended his regional NABF 140-pound title against Luis Rodriguez (22-2, 13 KOs) with a 12-round unanimous decision. He now wants a shot at a major world title. We spoke with Frankie Figueroa and his trainer, Buddy McGirt, himself a former champion at this weight, right after this fight about it and what lessons can be learned from it. This coming Saturday, May 24, Ricky Hatton (43-1, 31 KOs) fights in his hometown of Manchester, England, against veteran Juan Lazcano (37-4-1, 27 KOs). This fight will be televised live on the Versus network in the United States and on Sky Box Office in the United Kingdom. On a media conference call this past week, we spoke with both Ricky Hatton and Juan Lazcano about this fight and their plans. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

Nasty Nas, huh? By Iyapiphany

Nasty Nas, huh? By Iyapiphany

half-man, half-amazing/cause in my physical I can express through song/delete stress like Motrin/then extend strong/I drink Moet with Medusa/give her shotguns inhale/from the spliff that I lifted in hell/
It ain’t hard to tell… Nas. One of the dopest emcees to emerge from the new school of hip-hop, resurrecting the East Coast’s reputation for producing the illest, most prolific rappers in the country, in New York language, the planet, now has me scratching my head and questioning whether or not I’ll ever purchase another one of his albums (cd).

I understand the pressure of a career that demands one stay relevant and adaptable to appeal to the palate of an ever-changing fan base, however, that is no excuse for professional irresponsibility and communal disregard. Unfortunately this was exactly what I experienced on May 18, 2008 at 5:30pm while listening to Hot 97’s DJ Envy interviewing Nas about the new album, Ni##@. (Which I have heard is being changed, thank goodness, as of this writing.) Trust and believe I understand all about swag. There is no way an emcee can approach a mic without it and expect to be considered valid. It isn’t going to happen. The swag of course must be accompanied by skill and an ease of delivery that belies any doubt that may be part of the emcees internal experience. Nas has consistently delivered on these counts, whether the song was “OchiWali” or “I Can”. We may have been confused about his stances or if he had one, but he sounded convicted, so we gave him passes on the basis of his unquestionable lyricism and breadth of seeming knowledge. There are times however, when passes have to be revoked. This is one of those times.

DJ Envy questioned Mr. Jones about the title of his album. Nas responded that he received criticism from the elders in regard to this and that the elders didn’t understand that today’s youth have it harder than they (the elders) did. What?! I was thoroughly confounded. How? No one under the age of 40 knows what it is to have a cross burned on their lawn, nor have to get off of the sidewalk to walk in the dirt street because white folks needed the space nor be denied the right to vote nor have their choice of vocation nor love interest. If he meant something else, he didn’t say so. Envy also asked him about his long time relationship with 50 Cent. Nas laughed and said, “You talkin’ ‘bout that song. You wanna know who Biter about.” He went on to say that 50 Cent is in a lot of pain and ...”that brother’s crazy I ain’t saying he bite tables or nuttin’ like that but he be wildin’. That’s why I ain’t git in his ass, but if he ready, he could come see me.” I was at Black woman arched eyebrow mode by this time. DJ Envy said something else but I would be performing a major disservice by even pretending to have heard what because I was thoroughly riveted by Nas’ statements. At this point, Mr. Jones went on an expletive rampage, and very quickly all that could be heard was feedback and a hurried music choice. I waited for Envy to come back on the radio but that took a moment. When he did return he did an interview with TierraMarie, played her new song, played more music and spoke to TLC’s Chilli. Nas was not mentioned. It was as though he hadn’t ever been on the radio.

I stood in my kitchen, shocked and amazed. I quickly called my beau, who is quite familiar with the inner workings of hip-hop and relayed the aforementioned occurrence to him. He asked me a few quick questions about the station and what was going on and we hung up. I was aghast. Not so much by the arrogance in Nas’ statements but because it was incredibly clear that this man did not think about the impact of his words, and if he did, he disregarded any advice his better judgment might have steered him toward. Questions that immediately came to my mind were:
How high is he?
Was he aware of how many people were listening?
Why would he dare put Hot 97’s license in jeopardy (FCC is always listening)?
Was he holding some kind of grudge against someone? The most lingering however was this one: Why would Nas, of all people go out like that?

One thing I always admired about Nas was his ability to think and not be typical. Another thing I admired was his ability to be emotional through his work but not have the need to be overtly antagonistic toward those he took issue with. I thought he had a basic respect for his peers; those of us who have grown up to and with him. My expectation was that he would take up the banner of adult, a grown up or as my Caribbeans like to say, a big man.

No, it isn’t that I am prudish or too bourgeois to appreciate the colloquialisms of urban, inner-city descendants. My favorite emcee is Ghostface Killah (who understands Ghost?) I will love NY emcees ‘til the day I die. There are however, codes of behavior that we-people over the age of 27-need to exhibit to our peers and certainly to the children and youth that look to us as examples of who to be and become. If one doesn’t want to be a role model and uses that as an excuse, it doesn’t matter, they still are. Evidence, you seek? Look at the generation of young people who have little to no fear of authority, feel no personal responsibility to promote life in the community, much less the world they live in, and the every continuing disruption of Black marriage, love and family. THEY LEARNED THOSE BEHAVIORS FROM US! My point is simple, Nas KNOWS better.

At this stage in the game, he could demonstrate that there are ways to move that are just as effective in communicating a point that shows displeasure or irreverence without being crass and vulgar. While we are all responsible for our choices, what is being chosen? His last album was called, HIP HOP IS DEAD. That title leads me to think he was displeased with the direction of the music and culture that many of us found comfort and definition in. Our secret places to vent, express, teach and reveal the inner truths that many of us were too afraid to speak aloud. We, the socio-economically disadvantaged youth from female headed, single-parent homes who would grow up to be nothing more than usurpers of federal and state funded programs meant to maintain our subsistence found credence in our “street disciples”. As one from amongst us, how then does he behave in a manner that undermines his hard work and the influence he’s garnered that has spanned across social, economic and educational strata? No Nas, this is not good. My children’s Nana has always said, “When you know better, you do better.” That cursing tirade did not just affect me. Other working, educated, intellectual, former backpack, conscious folk are also questioning Nas’ devotion to both craft and culture. The prevailing thought and statement has become, “I’m not buying that. It may be something I download.” In the act of not giving a damn, was that his intention?

NYC Republicans For Obama?‏

NEW YORK CITY REPUBLICANS FOR OBAMA?

The unanticipated success of Senator Barack Obama’s campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination has positioned the new generation party leader as the presumptive candidate in November. The meteoric rise of the young legislator from Illinois to national prominence and presidential stardom, is generating political pandemonium as new voters engage the elective process and opposing partisans are facilitating a bandwagon effect.

Among the new converts to Obama’s political express is Gary James, a leader of the grassroots activist wing of the Republican Party in New York. James voted for Senator McCain in the presidential primary, and endorsed the Senator in his capacity as national chairman of TheGrandOldParty.org, a website to be formally launched in the fall. James announced that he has reconsidered his presidential endorsement of McCain and is now in support of Obama for president during a directors meeting of the GOP initiative.

James said, “After serious consideration I have decided to work on behalf of Senator Obama’s election to the presidency of the United States. I have discussed my resignation as national chairman with members of the executive committee, and it has been tendered effective immediately. I intend to write on behalf of the candidate on a voluntary basis, speak, organize and work directly with Democrats, independents and like minded Republicans.”

James continued, “I remain an advocate of a 30 / 70 (Republican/Democratic) percent split of the Black vote as a means to establish political leverage power in the community. However, I realize that 30 / 70 is a goal to be achieved in the near future because it is not achievable is presidential election 2008, as a practical political matter. Therefore, I will work for Obama’s election because his candidacy represents a political paradigm shift as well as a fundamental realignment in the Democratic and Republican Parties.”

He concluded, “I still like Senator McCain and continue to believe that he is an exceptional presidential nominee for the Republican Party, such as it is… Unfortunately, the Republican Party district leadership infrastructure in New York City in particular is compromised to the Democrats, and the Republican Party brand is effectively hi-jacked by a sophisticated conservative political splinter group. McCain the political maverick and independent political vote getter has the right stuff, but he is unable to walk on the political water given the current atmospherics.”

James reiterated his unequivocal support for Keisha Morrisey, a new generation Harlem resident now considering to run as a Republican candidate for the New York State Assembly. Ms. Morrisey is a former GOP candidate for the New York State Assembly and the New York City Council in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Keisha Morrisey said, “I support Senator McCain and I hope to be able to campaign in Harlem with him, if I am successful in getting the Republican Party nomination.”

Alton Chase, former Republican Party district leader in the Bronx, and chairman of the New York City Chapter of TGOP said, “Gary was inspired by the Obama tsunami but he was motivated by the fact that the local GOP leadership continuing to ignore the challenge and opportunity for political investment banking in the Black community. The party resists a forward moving political trajectory.”

Chase continued, “Gary raised the fact of Republican Party intransigence at an executive committee meeting and proposed the idea of ‘New York City Republicans for Obama,’ but the vote split. Supporters of Gary’s idea said that they may form an Obama support group called ‘purple people,’ a concept of blending red state and blue state dichotomy as a national election initiative.

“But apart from the internal dynamic relative to the Obama phenomenon,” Chase concluded, “there were existential forces influencing Gary that may have pushed him over the top politically. He was being lobbied consistently by an old and respected friend by the name of Ron Myers. As I understand, Ron is associated with the Obama campaign and is raising money on his behalf. I think that his friend Ron may have closed him. I suspect that others will follow Gary’s lead.

"El Gato" resigns with Seeno

NABF jr welterweight champion Francisco "El Gato" Figueroa has resigned with the Seeno Boxing Group.

"I initially signed Frankie in 2006 because I believed then that he would become a world champion and I continue to feel the same way now," stated Yaseen Malnik, president of Seeno Group Boxing.

"We will work hard together to continue moving him up the rankings and towards a world title!" The Spanish Harlem-born, Bronx-raised Figueroa (18-2, 13 KOs) captured his NABF title belt on July 28, 2007 stopping hardcore veteran Ubaldo Hernandez in the 12th round. "El Gato" has not lost a fight since 2004 and is on a ten-fight winning streak. Figueroa is the #10 WBC, #13 IBF and #14 WBA ranked jr welterweight contender. He trains with James "Buddy" McGirt, Sr. in Vero Beach, Florida.

NELSON, SCHULTZ, MILLER WIN INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE TITLES AT MOHEGAN SUN Nelson, Schultz Defend, Miller Submits McGivern For First Belt

UNCASVILLE, Conn.,– Heavyweight Roy Nelson (Las Vegas) and lightweight Ryan Schultz (North Platte, Neb.) defended their respective International Fight League titles while Dan Miller (Sparta, N.J.) scored a victory over defending middleweight champion Ryan McGivern (Bettendorf, Iowa) before 4,530 tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Nelson capped the evening with a victory over Brad Imes (Kansas City, Mo.), after Schultz defeated fellow lightweight Deividas Taurosevicius (Lithuania) to retain his belt. Nelson started with a blitz of punches right at the start of the first round which Imes was able to recover briefly. Nelson finished the bout with a crunching series of blows for the quick KO. Miller’s was a quick finish, after an exciting first three minutes of the first round in which both competitors maintained a high-energy pace. Miller caught McGivern in a kneebar to win his first title. The preliminary bouts featured athletes from four MMA camps, including Team Quest, Team Bombsquad, World Class Fight Center and Team Prodigy. Lightweight John Franchi (Cortland, N.Y.) of Bombsquad got the night off to an exciting start with a first-round submission victory over Frank Latina (Middletown, Conn.).
