SHOWTIME Media Prediction Poll: Mijares Is The Clear Choice Over Darchinyan On SHOWTIME
LOS ANGELES, Calif– Both WBA and WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares and IBF 115-pound kingpin Vic Darchinyan will look to add to their belt collection when they square off in a highly anticipated world title unification fight in the main event this Saturday, Nov. 1, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
So who is going to triumph? The experts think Mijares is too skilled a boxer to let the power-punching Darchinyan beat him.
Of the 32 boxing media members who participated in a SHOWTIME Prediction Poll, 26 picked Mijares and six liked Darchinyan.
Here’s how they see the Mijares-Darchinyan world title unification fight:
Robert Morales, Los Angeles Daily News/Long Beach Press Telegram (Mijares): “Mijares is a more technically sound fighter. He is going to frustrate the wild-swinging Darchinyan. Mijares will wind up hurting him late with counter shots. Not sure he will stop Darchinyan, but he might.”
Kevin Iole, Yahoosports.com (Mijares): “Mijares is a brilliant boxer. Darchinyan throws wide punches and Mijares will have no problem seeing them and getting out of the way of them. It should be a boxing clinic by one of the game's best-kept secrets. Mijares wins by decision in 12 rounds.”
J. Michael Falgoust, USA Today (Mijares): “Mijares is a terrific boxer, but Darchinyan's boxing skills leave much to be desired. Darchinyan has a puncher's chance, of course, because Mijares sometimes nullifies his height. He is often found bending over at the waist which obviously gives up his height advantage, and other times he stands too tall and in range of an opponent. That said, Darchinyan is not without a chance, but Mijares wins a decision.”
Steve Kim, MaxBoxing.com, (Mijares): “Not only do I think that Mijares is a master boxer, he's also the natural 115-pounder. Mijares will outpoint the puncher (Darchinyan).”

The raucous crowd had been throwing debris (beer, ice and water) into the ring and the slipping and sliding Holt was unable to regain his footing and was counted out by the referee. Holt, the Paterson , NJ native, was ahead on two of the judges scorecards at the time of the controversial stoppage.
The rematch took place on July 5, 2008 and the short and brutal bout lasted only sixty-one seconds. Holt was knocked down twice in the first thirty seconds. When Holt returned to his feet following the second knockdown, Torres moved in to finish him off when Holt landed a crushing overhand right that send Torres to his knee, held up only by the ropes. Torres, who suffered a concussion, took several minutes to return to his feet before being whisked off to a local hospital for further tests. Holt, the newly crowned champion, also headed to the hospital for stitches over his right eye.
Torres captured the vacant WBO title with a split decision over Mike Arnaoutis, another Atlantic City fan favorite, on November 18, 2006.

Darchinyan (30-1-1, 24 KOs) will face World Boxing Association (WBA)/World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 13 KOs) in an eagerly awaited 115-pound world title unification showdown this Saturday, Nov. 1, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Dirrell (16-0, 11 KOs) meets Oganov (28-1, 28 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

HOBOKEN, N.J.– International Boxing Federation top contender and mandatory challenger, former U.S. Olympian and IBF light middleweight title-holder Raul “El Diamente” Marquez, says he will shock the boxing world November 8 when he fights unbeaten IBF middleweight champion “King” Arthur Abraham at Jako Arena in Bamberg, Germany.
Abraham-Marquez is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland, presented by Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Seminole Warriors Boxing. The broadcast is being distributed in the United States and Canada by Integrated Sports for live viewing in English and Spanish at 3 PM/ET – 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DISH Network, Viewer’s Choice Canada, and Bell ExpressVue, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. iN Demand will show a replay the following day (Sunday, Nov. 9) at 2 PM/ET. Abraham-Marquez, originally scheduled October 4, was postponed due to Abraham’s sudden illness on the day of the fight, which Marquez still questions yet firmly believes will work to his advantage. Raul explained that both fighters made weight the night before and day of the fight, selected gloves, and passed examinations by the commission doctors.
“Everything was good after the weigh in,” southpaw Marquez explained. “After the morning weigh in (the day of the fight) I ate breakfast and went back to my room to rest. Around 11 there was banging on my door – everybody knows not to bother a fighter resting for his fight – and it was my promoter, Leon (Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing), who told me the fight was postponed. I was shocked; I couldn’t believe it. Something wasn’t right all along. I knew he (Abraham) was having trouble making weight. Before the first weigh in, we both checked out our weight – I was on but he was over a half-pound. I was called for the official weigh in and made it; he was called but was 10 minutes late. He came in wearing a robe because he had to go in the sauna. Maybe he was sick but, if he really was, it was because of what he had to do to make weight.
“It’s all positive for me. I’m looking at it as they stopped it for a reason. If he really was sick it would have taken him two weeks to get back to where he was. Four weeks isn’t going to help him if he’s having trouble making 160 pounds. I’ve heard that he’s had trouble making weight for his last few fights and his last was fought at a catch weight of 166. He’s very muscular and and it’s not easy staying in the same weight class. After my fight with (Giovanni) Lorenzo, we wanted this fight (against Abraham) to be in November so I’d have more time for my cut (over eye) to heal. Now it’s in November. I’ve already been to Germany and know what to expect. Germany’s going to be like my second home for the past month-and-a-half. It’s a beautiful country with great people and I made some fans over there. I’ll leave here next Wednesday and have the same 10 days to acclimate myself to the time and weather. The second time around I’m even more confident of winning. I’m not going over there just for a payday. When I beat him the big paydays will come. I’m going to Germany to shock the boxing world.”
Marquez still believes that Abraham is looking past him to a unification fight against Kelly Pavlik, despite Abraham’s claims that he isn’t looking ahead to bigger fights. “I’m an old pro, a crafty veteran who is even more motivated after seeing (Bernard) Hopkins beat Pavlik, old beating young, and I have a lot of experience over Abraham,” Raul continued. “I don’t know why Abraham just doesn’t say he’s focused on me like I would, but he keeps mentioning Pavlik or (Felix) Sturm and you can’t tell me he isn’t looking ahead, no matter what he says. I read a lot about boxing and he still has to beat me in a very tough fight to get Pavlik, unless, of course, he plans to pull out of our fight again. And I know he has had trouble fighting southpaws, like (Khoren) Gevor and (Ian) Gardiner, and I’m a top world-rated fighter.
“I got a lot of respect over there from him and his trainer. They said I’m better than Miranda or anybody else he’s fought. Abraham is powerful and strong with obvious power, but he leaves himself open and fights in spurts. He has flaws. Miranda won the first three rounds (in their last fight) but you saw what happens to a fighter who needed to lose too much weight. I won’t know how hard he hits until we get into the ring, but I’ve been hit by guys like (Jermain) Taylor and (Fernando) Vargas, and those two can really crack. If I didn’t think I could beat him, I wouldn’t be going to Germany. I’m in the best shape of my life, ready to go 12, 15 if they still had that many rounds. All of the pressure is on him. I expect to win and that will open the doors to bigger and better things for me.”

In a sensational matchup of foreign-born, New York-based junior middleweights, unbeaten Yuri Foreman, 26-0 (8 KOS), a native of Belarus who has also lived in Israel, will battle the very popular James Moore, 16-1 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, on Saturday, December 13, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
At stake will be Foreman’s NABF title. The 10 round fight will be part of a Showtime broadcast headlined by the rubber match between WBO junior welterweight champion Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres. Promoting the show is Top Rank, Inc.
The well-conditioned Foreman, 28, is a perpetual motion machine who in his last five outings won decisions over fighters with a cumulative record of 118-17-2. The hard-punching Moore, the former captain of the Irish national amateur team, won an 8 round decision over Christian Lloyd Joseph in his last bout in August.
“I’ve always said I wanted tough fights, and Yuri is a great challenge for me because he’s fast and elusive,” said the 30-year-old Moore, a highly regarded body puncher who is trained by Lennox Blackmoore.
“We both came to the United States with the same dreams, so this is a great crossroads fight for both of us. I am really looking forward to it.”

DEMETRIUS ANDRADE SENSATIONAL IN PRO-DEUBT
Demetrius Andrade was the most sought after Olympian following the 2008 Olympics. Anyone who witnessed him competing in the amateurs always said, as good as he was in the amateur ranks, he would only be that much better as a professional. As both of his co- promoters Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing and Art Pelullo of Banner Promotions have stated time and time again, "Demetrius has all the tools to be the next big superstar in boxing." Those tools, which include lightening quick hands, along with an excellent jab, and crisp combination punching to both the head and body, were all on display in his pro-debut, televised live nationally on Versus, Thursday October 23rd from the Northern Quest Casino in Airway Heights, Washington. Andrade completely destroyed his opponent Patrick Cape (4-3, 2 KOs) stopping him at :24 seconds of the second round.

Andrade, the first 2008 U.S. Olympian to make his pro-debut, came out stalking Cape from the opening bell, measuring his opponent up with his long jab. When Andrade got close enough he would unleash a devastating left hand right down the middle that repeatedly snapped Cape's head back and had him reeling just seconds into the fight. Cape realizing that he would not stand a chance with Andrade by staying on the outside attempted to get in close and tie up Andrade. Showing tremendous poise and ring generalship, especially for someone making their pro- debut, Andrade would flurry while on the inside with crisp combinations to both the head and body not allowing his opponent to get a breather. At the end of the first round with Cape holding his right arm, Andrade unleashed two thundering left hooks to the body, followed by an overhand left that dropped Cape for the count of nine. The left to the head was what put Cape down, but the second left hook to the body was the real damaging blow. Cape was literally saved by the bell as the round ended before the referee could signal the resumption of the ring hostilities.
Andrade began the second round going right at Cape looking to put him away. A straight left hand landed flush on Cape's jaw while was trying to pull away and Cape went down immediately. Rather then even start his count the referee called a halt to the contest at :24 seconds of the second round.
It was a great showing for the highly touted, former amateur world champion. Although it was just his first fight, for those watching it was hard to disagree with the notion that Andrade is truly something special. Look for Andrade to be back in action very shortly.

BUTE RETAINS TITLE IN CONTROVERSIAL FINAL ROUND; HEARNS TKO’S CLAVETTE IN 6TH; Catch The Replay Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME 2
MONTREAL, Quebec– It was a controversial finish, yet an unquestionable unanimous decision on Friday’s special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME.
Hometown hero, Lucian Bute of Montreal, dominated the No. 1-ranked challenger Librado Andrade of La Habra, Calif., en route to a unanimous decision victory and third successful defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight world title.
However, it was Bute who appeared to be out on his feet at the end of 12 rounds.
Bute used superior hand speed and excellent footwork to easily handle the rough challenger for most of the fight.
Andrade, who had been clearly battered and beaten through 11-plus rounds, took control only as Bute tired late in the final round. Andrade found a home for a few big punches and had Bute stumbling from pillar to post.
With Bute up against the ropes and seemingly out on his feet, Andrade landed another punishing overhand right that sent Bute down for the first time in his career.
Referee Marlon B. Wright gave what many considered a long count, including a break to instruct Andrade to remain in the neutral corner. When Wright resumed the count, Bute was on his feet, leaning against the ropes. Wright had deemed Bute ready to continue, but since the round had ended, it went to the scorecards.
Judges scored the fight 117-109, 115-110 and 115-111 all in favor of Bute.
“We’ve discussed this before,” said ShoBox analyst Steve Farhood during the telecast. “It is very difficult to win a title on the road. We may have seen an overly dramatic example of that tonight.
“This fight was 30 seconds too long for Bute. He totally collapsed… and basically, the referee cost Andrade the title.”
In the post-fight interview with Farhood, Bute said through a translator, “I think he took advantage of me getting tired. He won the 12th round, and maybe one other round, but I won the fight.
“I am not aware of any controversy but, maybe he was leaving the (neutral) corner. That is not for me to judge.”
“He was completely out,” said Andrade in the ring after the fight. “I didn’t come out of the corner. I don’t know what (Wright) was talking about. It was outrageous.”
Andrade falls to 27-2, 22 KOs. At the post fight press conference, he added, “If he gives me a rematch, we’ll take it. But I didn’t come out to win a decision. I promise you if we have a rematch, I am coming for him.
“It doesn’t matter. I had a job to do and I did it. I knocked him out. But whatever happens, we’ll move forward and whoever I fight next, I am coming to fulfill my dream. Whoever it is, I am coming. I am coming like rain.”
“We said he’d have to walk through fire if he was to win this fight in the last few rounds,” said Nick Charles, ShoBox host and play-by-play announcer. “He did. He came through fire, bullets and smoke. What a gutsy performance from Andrade.
“He leaves the loser, incredibly so, and walks off with tremendous grace.”
A near capacity crowd of 16,000-plus rocked the Bell Centre in favor of Quebec’s favorite fighter. A native of Galat, Romania, Bute has lived in Canada since 2003. He improves his record to 23-0, 18 knockouts.
HEARNS vs. CLAVETTE
In the co-feature, “The Chosen One” Ronald Hearns of Detroit, Mich., continued his climb up the 154-pound rankings with an impressive performance over Paul Clavette of New Brunswick, Canada (TKO 6).
Hearns fought effectively on the outside in the opening rounds. In the fifth, he began inflicting damage with a powerful straight right hand. In the sixth, Hearns sent Clavette down twice before forcing the referee to halt the action at 2:37 of the round.
Hearns entered the ring as the No. 11 ranked World Boxing Council (WBC) contender and No. 13 ranked World Boxing Association (WBA). He improves to 20-0, 15 KOs while Clavette drops to 14-2-1, 2 KOs.
The event was promoted by InterBox. Charles called the action from ringside with Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Tied at one win a piece, Holt and Torres have battled for 12 total rounds through two fights. The rubber match will eliminate all disputes and determine who reigns supreme in the 140-pound division.

STAR BOXING RETURNS TO ATLANTIC CITY NOVEMBER 7TH
On Friday November 7th at the Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing returns for the second time in three months with yet another fantastic double-header. The entire card will be broadcast live on GoFightLive.tv, boxing's newest and most innovative way to view world- wide events.
In the main event of the evening the number five rated heavyweight in the world Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson (20-0-1, 7KO) Asbury Park, NJ, who was last seen September 5th at Bally's when he dismantled former heavyweight champion of the world Bruce Seldon, stopping him in the 5th round, will take on tough Matthew Greer (12-3, 11KO) Parkville, MO, in a ten round heavyweight contest. The co-feature of the night features a fantastic welterweight showdown of New Jersey contenders. Trenton, New Jersey's Terrance "Heat" Cauthen (33-4, 9KO) looks to feed off his latest victory over previously unbeaten Alexis Camacho (16-1, 15KO) and work his way towards another title shot when he takes on Atlantic City's own Shamone "The Truth" Alvarez (19-1, 11KO). In Alaverez's last fight he took on now IBF welterweight king Joshua Clottey, losing a tough twelve round unanimous decision.

When Pappas is not knocking people out in the boxing ring he works full-time as a Yonkers Housing Police Sgt. Pappas has been working for the Yonkers Police Department for almost ten years now, and recently was involved in the very high-profile arrest Friday October 3rd of 43 year old Eric Hadar. Hadar is the CEO of Allied Partners, one of the New York City's top real estate firms owning 25 properties valued at more than $3 billion.
According to an article in the NY Daily News, while driving to work Pappas noticed Hadar's car swerving in and out of traffic recklessly along the Saw Mill Parkway headed towards Yonkers. "I couldn't believe the way he was driving," stated Pappas. "He was all over the place, passing cars on the shoulder, weaving in and out of lanes, it was amazing that he didn't hit anyone. I called the station and told them to get a few cars ready to pull the guy over once he got into Yonkers. If he wasn't pulled over I honestly believe he would have killed someone."
Upon arriving in Yonkers Hadar's car was stopped. As Sgt. Pappas approached the vehicle, he noticed Hagar trying to stuff brown bags into his glove compartment. Further examination of the brown bags revealed Hagar had on him 100 + grams of cocaine and 703 Oxycontin pills and 352 Xanax pills. Although the quantity of drugs found in Hadar's vehicle "is indicative of an intent to sell", Pappas does not believe the millionaire real estate mogul is a drug dealer. "He told us he was on his way to a party for the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah). Either way, I am just happy no one was injured, and that these drugs were taken off the streets," stated Pappas.
As if Pappas's daily heroic efforts that come with his position as Sgt. aren't enough, he has decided to donate his entire purse on the 29th to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. "It is just another opportunity for me to give back. Sloan Kettering is one of the premier cancer centers in all the world, and I am lucky to be in the position where I can contribute, so I do."
Oh yeah, and his fight on the 29th? "I can't wait," stated an excited Pappas. "Boxing is always something I have had a strong passion for. I don't know what will come of my boxing career, but right now I am just happy that I have been given the opportunity to do something I love. I expect the show on the 29th to be fantastic. Quillin off “The Grande Event” card; Duddy, Wolak & Teron in action Nov. 21 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC
NEW YORK– Brooklyn’s unbeaten middleweight prospect Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (20-0, 15 KOs) will not be fighting November 21st on “The Grande Event” show, promoted by Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing at the Roseland Ballroom, due to minor discomfort in his right hand.
“With such a strong card -- John Duddy, Pawel Wolak and Jorge Luis Teron -- and Peter fighting January 17 on HBO,” Kushner explained, “together with his management team we’ve made a decision to withdraw ‘Kid Chocolate’ from our November 21st show to insure success for the HBO January 17th show.”
Quillin, rated in the top 10 of four regional boxing organizations, was slated to fight in the 10 round co-feature. “I’m disappointed not to be fighting on this great card but I’ll be there to support everybody,” said Quillin who is scheduled to fight on HBO against James McGirt, Jr. on Jan. 17. “I’m so excited to be fighting on HBO that my management and promoter, Cedric Kushner, decided to take me off ‘The Grande Event’ on November 21st. ‘Kid Chocolate’ will be even sweeter in January fighting on HBO.”
“The Grande Event” is headlined by undefeated middleweight Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs), fighting out Queens (NY) by way of Derry, Northern Ireland, against veteran Sam “The Punching Policeman” Hill (17-9-1, 10 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Duddy is rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization, as well as No. 4 by the World Boxing Council and No. 7 by the International Boxing Federation.
New York State middleweight and Polish National junior middleweight champion Wolak (22-1, 15 KOs), now living in Brooklyn, meets Christian Lloyd Joseph (12-7-3, 5 KOs) in a 10-round bout.
Bronx lightweight Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), trained by former world and Olympic champion Mark Breland, is the reigning NABO champion rated No. 4 by the WBO. He faces an opponent to be determined another 10-rounder.
Also scheduled to fight in separate four-round bouts are Queens light middleweight Lambrose “Lionheart” Karaolides (1-0), Bronx super middleweight Hajro Sujak (2-0, 2 KOs), Brooklyn welterweight Luis “El Mero Mero” Ruiz (3-0, 1 KO), Brooklyn light middleweight Romain Oliveri (1-0, 0 KOs), and light welterweight Jonathan Gonzalez, a 2008 Puerto Rican Olympian making his pro debut.

Manfredo-Bika headlines Nov. 13 “Tough & Tested”at Dunkin’ Donuts Center; Boxing key part of Providence’s culture
PROVIDENCE– Unlike in many United States cities today, pro boxing remains alive and strong in Providence, which will host “Tough & Tested” on November 13 at the newly renovated Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
Two-time world title challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr., runner-up in Season One of The Contender, battles Sakio “The Scorpian” Bika, winner of Season Three of The Contender, in the 12-round main event for the IBO super middleweight title.
“Tough & Tested,” promoted by the Tournament of Contenders in association with Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), will air nationally live on Versus television. The co-promoters have called for a ‘Pink Out’ (everybody wearing something colored pink) to show support for the Gloria Gemma Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from ticket and T-shirt sales will benefit the Gloria Gemma Foundation for research into early breast cancer detection.
Boxing’s rich tradition in Providence started way back in 1890 when George “Old Chocolate” Godfrey knocked out Patsy Cardiff in the 16th round. Over the years, Providence was a hot spot for the “sweet science” at places like the National A.C., Marieville Garden, Infantry Hall, Rhode Island Auditorium Arcadia Ballroom, Elks Auditorium, Metropolitan Opera House, Prince Memorial Stadium, Strand Theater, Rhode Island Convention Center, Twin River and the predecessor to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the Providence Civic Center.
The late, great heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was 28-0 in Providence, where a virtual Who’s Who of Hall of Fame boxers have fought, including “Sugar” Ray Robinson, “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, Sandy Saddler, “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Ted “Kid” Lewis, Ezzard Charles, Mickey Walker, “Barbados” Joe Walcott, Kid Gavilan, Sammy Angott, Ike Williams and many more.
The last major world title fight held at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center (Providence Civic Center at that time) was October 1, 1991, when Vinny Paz stopped Gilbert Dele in the 12th round for the WBA light middleweight championship. Also fighting on that card, ironically, was Peter Manfredo, Sr. – Peter, Jr.’s father and head trainer -- who won an 8-round decision against previously unbeaten Paul Lynch (6-0).
“CES has worked hard to keep the boxing fires burning in Providence for the past few decades,” Providence-based promoter Burchfield said. “The November 13th show continues the great boxing tradition here in Providence.
Manfredo (31-5, 16 KOs), the reigning NABF Interim champion, is the WBC No. 13 rated super middleweight. Fighting in front of his hometown fans, “The Pride of Providence” sports a perfect 16-0 (10 KOs) record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) in the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. All five of Manfredo’s losses as a pro have been to world champions and Peter, Jr. has an opportunity to join an exclusive club of local fighting stars such as world champions Paz, Joey Archibald and Harold Gomes with a win against Bika.
IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight title-holder Bika (26-3-2. 16 KOs), a 2000 Cameroon Olympian now fighting out of Australia, won The Contender III with a dramatic eighth round stoppage of Bridgeport, Connecticut native Jaidon Codrington in the finale in Boston. Bika, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 8 by The Ring magazine, hasn’t been stopped in 31 pro fights.
In the 10-round co-feature, Grady “Bad Boy” Brewer (23-11, 13 KOs), winner of Season Two of The Contender, meets fan favorite in Season Two of The Contender, IBF No. 13 rated Cornelius “K9” Bundrage (28-3, 16 KOs), in an IBO light middleweight title eliminator. Codrington (18-2, 14 KOs), runner-up in Season Three of The Contender, also is fighting on the card in a super middleweight Special Attraction against an opponent to be determined.

Two-time world title challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr., runner-up in Season One of The Contender, battles Sakio “The Scorpian” Bika, winner of Season Three of The Contender, in the 12-round main event for the IBO super middleweight title.
“Tough & Tested,” promoted by the Tournament of Contenders in association with Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), will air nationally live on Versus television. The co-promoters have called for a ‘Pink Out’ (everybody wearing something colored pink) to show support for the Gloria Gemma Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from ticket and T-shirt sales will benefit the Gloria Gemma Foundation for research into early breast cancer detection.
Boxing’s rich tradition in Providence started way back in 1890 when George “Old Chocolate” Godfrey knocked out Patsy Cardiff in the 16th round. Over the years, Providence was a hot spot for the “sweet science” at places like the National A.C., Marieville Garden, Infantry Hall, Rhode Island Auditorium Arcadia Ballroom, Elks Auditorium, Metropolitan Opera House, Prince Memorial Stadium, Strand Theater, Rhode Island Convention Center, Twin River and the predecessor to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the Providence Civic Center.
The late, great heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was 28-0 in Providence, where a virtual Who’s Who of Hall of Fame boxers have fought, including “Sugar” Ray Robinson, “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, Sandy Saddler, “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Ted “Kid” Lewis, Ezzard Charles, Mickey Walker, “Barbados” Joe Walcott, Kid Gavilan, Sammy Angott, Ike Williams and many more.
The last major world title fight held at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center (Providence Civic Center at that time) was October 1, 1991, when Vinny Paz stopped Gilbert Dele in the 12th round for the WBA light middleweight championship. Also fighting on that card, ironically, was Peter Manfredo, Sr. – Peter, Jr.’s father and head trainer -- who won an 8-round decision against previously unbeaten Paul Lynch (6-0).
“CES has worked hard to keep the boxing fires burning in Providence for the past few decades,” Providence-based promoter Burchfield said. “The November 13th show continues the great boxing tradition here in Providence.
Manfredo (31-5, 16 KOs), the reigning NABF Interim champion, is the WBC No. 13 rated super middleweight. Fighting in front of his hometown fans, “The Pride of Providence” sports a perfect 16-0 (10 KOs) record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) in the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. All five of Manfredo’s losses as a pro have been to world champions and Peter, Jr. has an opportunity to join an exclusive club of local fighting stars such as world champions Paz, Joey Archibald and Harold Gomes with a win against Bika.
IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight title-holder Bika (26-3-2. 16 KOs), a 2000 Cameroon Olympian now fighting out of Australia, won The Contender III with a dramatic eighth round stoppage of Bridgeport, Connecticut native Jaidon Codrington in the finale in Boston. Bika, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 8 by The Ring magazine, hasn’t been stopped in 31 pro fights.

UNBEATEN TEON KENNEDY BOXES FELIPE ALMANZA ON NOV. 14 AT PHILADELPHIA’S NEW ALHAMBRA
Philadelphia, PA— Undefeated super bantamweight prospect Teon Kennedy, of North Philadelphia, goes for his 11th win as a pro when he takes on Felipe Almanza, of Lorica, Colombia, in a scheduled eight-round contest Friday evening, Nov. 14, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets, next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. First of eight fights at 7.30 p.m.
Topping the eight-fight card is a 10-round contest for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super flyweight title between Raul Martinez, of San Antonio, TX, and Victor Proa, of Monterrey, Mexico. Both men are undefeated: Martinez is 23-0, 13 K0s; Proa is 26-0-2, 19 K0s.
The Martinez-Proa contest, as well as the 10-round welterweight semifinal between Alex Camacho, of Austin, TX, and Edvan Barros, of Bahia, Brazil, will be televised live by Telefutura/Univision as part of a two-hour Solo Boxeo broadcast beginning at 8pm EST.
Kennedy, 22, scored his most impressive win July 18 when he knocked out previously unbeaten Thomas Snow, of Washington, DC, in two rounds at the New Alhambra. He followed that with a six-round decision over Robert DaLuz, of Jacksonville, FL, on Sept. 19 in Hockessin, DE.
Earlier this year, Kennedy earned an eight-round decision over Castulo Gonzalez, of Lynn, MA, at the New Alhambra.
A pro less than two years, Kennedy is 10-0, 5 K0s. As an amateur, he won the 2004 National Golden Gloves championship at 112 pounds.
Almanza, 32, has a 14-14-1 record with seven knockouts. He spent most of his career in Colombia and re-located to the United States in 2008 and now trains with Lenny DeJesus in New York.
“Before I came along Almanza was just taking fights on his own and using anybody he could find to work in his corner,” DeJesus said. “That’s all changed now that he’s with me. You’ll see a different fighter.”

Cunningham vs. Adamek Newark Press Conference Quotes
NEWARK, N.J.— International Boxing Federation cruiserweight world champion Steve “USS” Cunningham and former world champion Tomasz Adamek foreshadowed their Dec. 11 meeting at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. at a press conference today at the one-year-old venue.

“I’m a true world champion. I’ve fought in South Africa, Germany and in Poland, twice. I’m more popular in Europe than I am in America right now but that’s about to change. I want to give the world a true cruiserweight world champion that will stay in the division and defend his titles for years to come.”
Adamek, from Poland now living and training in Jersey City, N.J., says he will bring his vaunted right-hand punching power from light heavyweight to the 200-pound limit.
“Steve’s a nice guy but I’m going to beat him, Adamek, the IBF No. 1-ranked cruiserweight, said. “He’s a world champion and I respect him but I will win. Steve’s quick and dynamic. It will be a great fight.
“It made me weak to make 175 pounds against Chad Dawson and I was still able to knock him down. My right hand is bigger at cruiserweight. I’ll be stronger and carry my punch to the 200-pound limit.”
