Jim Gray Interview with Antonio Tarver and Chad Dawson

Jim Gray Interview with Antonio Tarver and Chad Dawson

Gray: Antonio you have said that Chad is the future and you’re the now. What gives you the indication that he’s not the ‘now’ and the future as well?

Tarver: Well, I feel like I’m at the top of my game. I just took the IBF title from Clinton Woods. I’m here. I’m the unified champion, four-time light heavyweight champion, twice undisputed. I’ve done it all. I’ve beaten everybody so why wouldn’t I feel like I’m the now and he can be the future?

Gray: Chad do you feel Antonio is way past his prime?

Chad Dawson: Yes, definitely past his prime. Look at his last three performances. They speak for themselves. Just look at Clinton Woods. He can’t even beat a ‘paycheck.’ Clinton Woods didn’t put up a fight…. He came to collect a paycheck.

Gray: By that same token, you didn’t have your best night against Glen Johnson and Antonio didn’t have a problem.

Dawson: Like I said, Glen Johnson came to fight, Chad Dawson came to fight. We had a hell of a fight. I’m here, I’m the future and I’m the now. On October 11, I will prove that point to the whole world.

Gray: How do you think you’ll be able to do that?

Dawson: I am in tremendous shape like I always am. I come into every fight in tremendous shape. There’s nothing that Antonio Tarver does that can throw me off my game plan. He’s slow, he’s old. Come on, look at my last three performances and look at his and tell me who the better fighter is.

Gray: Antonio you’re response to what you’re hearing here from Chad Dawson?

Tarver: I’m listening to a guy that is very naïve, a guy that is very young, obviously, mentally and he’s sadly mistaking. (Many) have come and tried to conquer and have tried to take me out. It has never been done before and it won’t get done on Oct. 11. All this guy is hoping for is that I show up less then prepared. They are looking to roll the dice and get lucky. That’s it, bottom line. But I’m here to tell you, I’m here to put the world on notice that it won’t happen. I’ll have my best performance against Chad Dawson. He’s right about the prediction. It won’t go the distance.

Gray: Antonio, he raises an interesting point. You haven’t looked your best in your last three fights. It looks like there has been a struggle and it looks like age now has affected you. What have you done in the interceding time to change that trend?

Tarver: Do me a favor. Put the camera up close. This is a fighter that has been in this sport for 20 years. Now do the same with Chad Dawson. He’s ten years my youth. The bottom line is I got the secret to the success. I’ve been here. I’m not going anywhere. You will see a display of the sweet science when I technically annihilate Chad Dawson on the 11th.

Gray: Chad, a lot of people say possibly you don’t have the chin and you’ve addressed that in the past. What about your chin and what about taking the big punch from him?

Dawson: I’ve never been knocked out. That’s what I have to say to that. I’ve been down but never been knocked out.

Gray: Do you respect not only what he’s (Tarver) done in the past but where he is now as a fighter?

Dawson: I respect what he’s done in the past but where he is right now as a fighter, you can’t compare that to me. I’m young, I’m fast, I’m strong, I’m in the best shape of my life. Every fight I come in on weight. I never have trouble making weight. Never. I mean that’s a true champion right there. I never have to struggle to make weight because I come in to camp on weight, every camp.

Gray: Why do you feel you’re an underdog and there’s this lack of respect, Antonio?

Tarver: They just don’t understand my game. All I do is win and all I do is be successful but they can’t understand my game. I was underestimated coming out of the Olympics. They never thought I would reach this plateau. As long as we have critics it gives me something to shoot for.

Gray: Chad, when you hear all this, what is your reaction?

Dawson: I believe in my abilities and he believes in his abilities. But, like he said, October 11, somebody is going home with hell, and it’s not going to be me.

Joan Guzman Personal Statement‏

Joan Guzman personal statement regarding his canceled fight against Nate Campbell.

I was wrong and I apologize. There is no one else to blame for me not making the lightweight division weight limit of 135 pounds for my WBO, WBA and IBF title bout against Nate Campbell this past weekend.

No trainer is to blame. No nutritionist is to blame. No manager is to blame. No promoter is to blame. Put the blame on me, Joan Guzman, because I was completely at fault.

My conduct in this important matter was unprofessional.

I rolled the dice by coming in too heavy at the start of my training camp. I was able to get away with this many times before but, at age 32, my body shut down on me with 3.5 pounds to go. My metabolism rejected taking off so many pounds in a short period.

I apologize, first and foremost, to Campbell. I hope he accepts my sincere apology.

I apologize to all the boxing fans, his, mine and fans who just wanted to see two accomplished fighters compete.

I apologize to everyone in my native country, the Dominican Republic, and I am sorry

I let you all down after you have given me years of great support.

I apologize to the Showtime network and hope I can earn their forgiveness over time.

I apologize to the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino and to all the great people of the Biloxi area.

I apologize to Campbell's entire team from co-promoters Don King and Terry Trekas on down.

I certainly apologize to my team starting with Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the entire Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and to my manager, Jose Nunez.

I apologize to other members of my own team all of whom worked so hard.

I apologize to the WBO, to the WBA, to the IBF and to the Mississippi athletic commission.

I learned a lesson, a hard lesson, and I just hope that, in time, I can regain the trust and the confidence of all concerned.

Humbly Submitted,
JOAN GUZMAN

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS AND BOXING DOCUMENTARIES AMONGST FIRST SET OF ANNOUNCED FILMS AT INAUGURAL U.S. SPORTS FILM FESTIVAL IN PHILDELPHIA OCTOBER 23-26

World debut of “Renzo Gracie: Legacy,” and Critically Acclaimed “Kassim The Dream,” along with Classic Films By Director Mark Ciardi, Including Invincible, The Rookie and Miracle, Among First Set Nine Of Titles Announced Today

The inaugural U.S. Sports Film Festival, the most comprehensive sports film festival in United States history, today announced the first series of nine films selected to be screened during the three-day run from October 23-26.

The festival will debut the Mixed Martial Arts documentary “Renzo Gracie: Legacy,” the life story of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu master and the American patriarch of one of the world’s fastest rising sports, as well as “Kassim The Dream,” the story of Ugandan-born boxing world champion Kassim Ouma, a kidnapped child soldier and his struggles to break free and regain his life as a professional athlete, will lead the fight films track for the festival. “Philadelphia is a city whose fans and teams are always battling for recognition, and we felt that the city that gave us ‘Rocky’ and Smokin’ Joe Frazier would really take to a track of new films on MMA and boxing. These two are certainly amongst the most compelling,” said festival founder and president Stephan Hartman. “Given MMA’s rising popularity worldwide and its recent approval for competition in the state of Pennsylvania, the debut of the life story of such a living legend as Renzo Gracie was a perfect fit. We also think the story of Kassim Ouma, both as an athlete and a person, is one that fans will really be blown away by.

It is our pleasure to lead our first series of festival announcements with these two amazing life stories of two incredible fighters.” Other critically-acclaimed films slated to run at the USSFF include “Kickin It,” the Ted Leonsis-produced film about a team of homeless soccer players and their life stories and successes on the pitch; “Run For Your Life,” the true-life story of the man who created the New York City Marathon, Fred Lebow; and “Basketball in the Barrio,” the story of two former University of Texas El Paso basketball players who started a program teaching basketball to the impoverished immigrant children of South El Paso, and the stories of those who used basketball as a tool for fulfillment. Each film will include a series of events involving the stars and makers of the films, who will be on hand to discuss all the elements that went into making these landmarks. Already, nearly 100 films have been submitted for review ranging from the traditional sports to Mixed Martial Arts, Extreme Endurance Racing and even Pin Trading.

The remaining list of 10films, many to be seen on a big screen for the first time, will be released in the coming weeks. Additionally, the first 10 films also include a series of classic films by director Mark Ciardi, including “Invincible,” “Miracle,” and “The Rookie Sponsors and media partners for the U.S. Sports Film Festival include: IZOD Fragrance for Men, Intraware, Barefoot Wine, KYW NewsRadio 1060, 610WIP Sports Radio, Greater Philadelphia Film Office, Philadelphia Sports Congress, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp., City of Philadelphia, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Soul.

Maloney has selective memory regarding Dunne - Munroe

Bernard Dunne’s manager Brian Peters has accused Rendall Munroe’s promoter Frank Maloney of selective memory over the Londoner’s claim that Dunne is “running scared“ from the current European Super Bantamweight champion.

Yesterday Maloney claimed that he had made a “substantial offer” to Dunne to come to England to challenge Munroe for his old title. However Peters remains puzzled as to why Maloney rejected a career best purse for Munroe to defend his title against Dunne in Ireland.

“I’d like to thank Frank for his offer," said Peters . "However he neglected to mention that the offer I made to him for Rendall to defend against Bernard was more than double their offer and would have been easily the biggest payday of Munroe’s career. So by Frank's rationale I'm sure he'd admit that the offer he rejected, was very, very, substantial.

“Clearly they are not as confident of beating Bernard as they would like people to think - but if they want to use Bernard’s name to get some publicity then that’s ok too. Our offer stands by the way and should Frank wish to take it up he can give me a call. Either way I wish Rendall nothing but the best in his career. I hope the kind of offers that his team are rejecting come around again for him in the future.”

Peters says that if Maloney still has no interest in his offer he will move on with other plans for Dunne. “There are plenty of other options on the table for Bernard. He’s already been European champion and to fight for a World title has always been the ultimate aim and that’s what we’re building to at the moment.”

Team Ruiz counters Sauerland’s attack

LAS VEGAS – Team Ruiz blasted Wilfried Sauerland and his promotional company about derogatory remarks made against two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), after the latter responded to a press release in which Team Ruiz demanded a full videotape of Valuev-Ruiz II to further review for evidence of alleged corrupt practices in their August 30th fight in Berlin.

Team Ruiz’ points of contention included Judge Takeshi Shimakawa improperly keeping a running score during the fight; Ruiz not being credited with a legitimate knockdown when he floored Valuev in the second round; Judge Antonio Requena scoring two rounds even despite WBA instructions that there should be no even rounds scored in championship bouts; most importantly, throughout the fight Valuev’s cornermen received judges’ scoring results as the rounds went on.

“Team Ruiz is not as concerned with media quotes in Sauerland’s hometown newspaper,” Ruiz advisor/attorney Tony Cardinale emphasized, “as they are about quotes from international publications from several years ago like Tim Graham’s Dec. 2, 1999 column regarding the federal criminal charges against the IBF’s Bob Lee, ‘How to get ranked in boxing’ on espn.com: “Two other alleged scenarios involved George Foreman and Axel Schultz. According to the documents, Foreman’s people paid (past IBF president Robert) Lee $100,000 for an exemption to defend his title against the unranked Schulz. Big George got more than he bargained for and sweated out a majority decision. Then Schulz’s management allegedly paid Lee $100,000 to order a rematch. He did, but it never came off.” (Team Ruiz note: Sauerland was Schultz’ management team.) We had a good laugh reading what Team Sauerland said, but we are more concerned about what went on in this fight. We want to review the full, unedited Valuev-Ruiz II videotape to strengthen our position outlined in the original release about the issues.”

PunchStat results of Valuev-Ruiz II revealed that Ruiz connected with nearly twice as many power punches as Valuev, 98-52, and that the 7’ 0”, 318-pound Valuev threw 99jabs compared to Ruiz’ 49. Valuev also instigated 79 “clear” clinches to Ruiz’ 29.

“This wasn’t the amateurs where jabs count as much as power punches,” Cardinale noted. “John had Valuev running around the ring, despite the tremendous difference in their sizes (Ruiz stands 6’ 2” and weighed 239 pounds), when Valuev wasn’t throwing that freakishly long, light hitting jab of his to hold-off John, he was holding and pushing John down.”

Upon review of the full videotape of the fight for review, Team Ruiz indicated that it planned to petition the WBA to rule the bout a no-contest and Valuev be stripped of the WBA title for a blatant violation of WBA rules. Team Ruiz will also seek sanctions against any officials involved in permitting these violations to happen.

Chamblin and Scypion featured on Lafayette, LA MMA Card‏

Lafayette, Louisiana Native Seeking Third World Title Try, Son of Legend ,Wilford Scypion, defends undefeated knockout record

Kasha Chamblin hasn’t fought since losing a unanimous decision to Ada Velez on November 11th, 2007 for the IBA Super Bantamweight World Championship. The fight was supposed to be a ‘coming out party’ for the attractive Lafayette, Louisiana native and her bringing a world championship to Cajun Country. Velez fought a near perfect fight in defeating the tough, durable, and determined Chamblin.

Saturday night, August 30th, 2008 will be a rematch and a hopeful tune up for Chamblin against Arkansas Keri Hill at Blackham Coliseum in Chamblin’s hometown.
“I want to fight once every month or 6 weeks,” states Chamblin, “as I work my way back into title contention.” Already rated by various boxing sanctioning bodies as a top 15 fighter in the world, Chamblin says she wants that one more shot for a world championship.

Chamblin’s big brown eyes says it all. Deep and penetrating, she looks at everyone with conviction. “I am not going to let anyone down,” she claims. “I want to make Lafayette proud of supporting me.”

Tickets for this MMA/Pro Boxing card entitled COLLISION AT THE COLISEUM 3 can be purchased Southside Bakery and Pete’s Sports Bar on Johnston Street in Lafayette. General admission is $25 and Ringside is $40.

Several MMA fights will be featured along with young prospect Wilford Scypion, Jr in a 4 round boxing match.

Scypion comes with serious power in both hands as a prospect having knocked out all of his 6 opponents by the fourth round.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES SAMUEL PETER vs. VITALI KLITSCHKO, Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Gallagher’s Steak House, New York, New York

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES SAMUEL PETER vs. VITALI KLITSCHKO, at Gallagher’s Steak House, New York, New York

On a night that will electrify the boxing world, active World Boxing Council (WBC) Heavyweight Champion Sam Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) will defend his title against WBC Champion Emeritus Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs), making his dramatic return to the ring after a four-year absence, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, Saturday, October 11.

Immediately following the heavyweight world title fight, which begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT on tape delay, two light heavyweight champions will meet, live on SHOWTIME, when Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver and "Bad" Chad Dawson square off in a long-awaited grudge match.

The Peter-Klitschko showdown will be co-promoted by Duva Boxing, K2 Promotions and Don King Productions from the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany. Tarver vs. Dawson will be promoted by Gary Shaw Productions in association with AT Entertainment and take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada

SAMUEL PETER

“I am very grateful to be here today. I want to clear up one thing. I am the true heavyweight champion.

Vitali, you never beat a champion. You say you are the champion, but you are not a champion. You can’t be the champion until you beat me, and you can’t.

“I have fought 31 fights and never ducked anyone. I fought with my eardrum broken and lost 25 pounds that night, but I still fought.

“I am making one promise today. I will knock Vitali out. Trust me. I will knock out Vitali, and then I will beat his brother (IBF/WBO Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko). There is no doubt about that.”

VITALI KLITSCHKO

“Thank you to everyone who put energy into making this fight happen.”

“I am pleased to say that I am back. I am happy to be back in the ring, happy to fight for my title. I gave away my title freely because of my knee injury.

“I feel sorry for Peter that I must fight him. Skeptical people say that I won’t win because I have been out of the ring for three years, but I did not lose the title. I am honored to fight for (WBC President) José Sulaimán, who gave me this chance.

“I have big respect for Mr. Lou Duva, but his fighters always say they will knock me out and it never happens. Mr. Duva is preparing Peter to knock me out, but this will never happen.

“I don’t underestimate Peter. He is a good puncher. I will give my best to be the winner, to take my title back, and to make history where two brothers will be champions at the same time. It’s a huge motivation for me.

“I promise the fight will not be easy and it won’t go to the scorecards. It will probably end between rounds four-six. I have a lot of presents ready for Peter for October 11.”

DINO DUVA (Peter’s promoter)

“This fight was a fight that a lot of people never thought would happen. When the WBC ordered Sam Peter to fight Vitali Klitschko, I was the most skeptical about Klitschko’s ability. But, a few weeks ago, I ran into Vitali at the Olympics in Beijing. I saw him walk toward me with a fire in his eye and he asked me if the fight was happening. When I told him yes it was, he promised me that he would show up as ready as ever. After seeing him and the fire in him, my doubts were put to rest.

“We are so happy to work with SHOWTIME. SHOWTIME is pound for pound the best network in boxing. We are proud to have this fight on SHOWTIME.”

LOU DUVA (Legendary trainer)

Peter reminds me of Rocky Marciano, and he will definitely knock out Vitali. You’re going to see a fight here, and I’ll tell you what, on October 11, you will see Peter knockout Klitschko.”

BERND BOENTE (Klitschko’s Manager)

“This will be a great fight between two great punchers. I doubt however that this fight goes 12 rounds.”

Lauzon positioning himself for UFC title run in 2009 Bradley fight Sept. 17 in Omaha on UFC Fight Night 15

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass– In a relatively short period, 24-year-old Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon has gone from computer geek to starring on The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, upsetting a former world mixed-martial-arts champ, and then headlining UFC Fight Night 13.

Not too shabby for the nerd-looking but fearless fighting lightweight contender who has a Bachelor’s degree in computer networking from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Two years ago, he was fighting part-time and working full-time at Charles River Analytics in Cambridge (MA), where he was responsible for maintaining a 130-computer network.

Now, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Lauzon (16-4, 3 KOs, 13 submissions) is currently preparing for his next fight, September 17 against Kyle Bradley (13-5) in UFC Fight Night 15, on Spike television live from Omaha, Nebraska.

“Every fighter will tell you that their next fight is the most important and that won’t change here,” Lauzon said. “Fighters can make or break their careers with a few good or bad fights, so I’m not going to let any fight slip by.”

Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, known as the “City of Champions” because Hall of Fame boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler fought out of there, Lauzon fought on the relatively small New England circuit during the early part of his still young MMA career, earning 2004 Massachusetts Fighter of the Year honors.

In 2006, “J-Lau” won an 8-man tournament by defeating three fighters on one night in the World Fighting League, and he was crowned WFL Grand Prix champion. His impressive showing led to a UFC contract, although he believed that he’d lose his love of fighting if he became a fulltime fighter and it became a job.

His UFC debut was against former world light weight champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver (21-7-1), who was a solid 7-1 favorite, in UFC 63 (September 23, 2006). Lauzon immediately took Pulver to the mat, but they got up and Joe rocked Pulver with a right knee, leading to a devastating left hook that dropped Pulver. A barrage followed and the referee halted the fight at 43 seconds of the opening round, marking Pulver’s first UFC loss in eight fights.

“Going into the fight with Jens,” Lauzon reflected, “I had all the upper tier fighters on his plateau and I thought that I was far off. Getting a big win like that let me know that I could compete at that level.”

Lauzon’s impressive performance led to him being cast on The Ultimate Fighter 5, where Joe met his new mentor and training partner, UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn, who was his coach on the television series. Joe won his first two fights in the series against a team coached, ironically, by Pulver, but Joe lost a decision to Manvel Gamburyan in the semifinals. In the finale, however, “J-Lau” beat Brandon Melendez by submission (triangle choke) at 2:09 of the second round.

“The Ultimate Fighter was great for me because it put me on television in front of everyone,” Joe noted. “On the local level, MMA shows are filled by fighters selling tickets to their friends. The UFC has expanded that model by letting the world get to know fighters. You could fight a dozen times and still not have the same connection with people as you do when they see how you live for a month and a half.

After The Ultimate Fighter 5, Lauzon finally left his job at Charles River Analytics to become a fulltime MMA fighter, and took Penn up on his offer to train him, moving to Hawaii where one of his training partners was WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber.

“Training with BJ was the best,” Lauzon remarked. “You always try to have a worst case scenario opponent in mind while training and BJ is just that” world-class Jiu-Jitsu, great striking with heavy ands and a solid chin, as well as crazy flexibility and takedown defense. All of that is hard to come by in one person, but BJ brings it all, the complete package. I am fortunate enough to have worked with BJ and I realize how much further I can improve. I am back training in Bridgewater at my school for this fight, but I’m sure I will be training with BJ again in the future.”

Last November, Joe defeated Jason Reinhardt by submission (rear naked choke) in the first round at UFC 78: Validation, setting up an All-Massachusetts showdown against Kenny Florian in the main event on UFC Fight Night 13 in Denver on April 2. The older, more experienced Florian registered a win by second-round TKO. “I learned from that fight that I need to pace myself better and not think that I have to go all out from bell to bell,” Joe commented. “It was real tough in Colorado with the elevation. I tried to prepare for it but I didn’t do enough. It was a costly lesson but one that I will never make again.”

Lauzon, representing Lauzon MMA, has moved back to Massachusetts and he’s living again in the town he grew-up in, East Bridgewater. Given his youth and talent, along with Penn possibly moving up to the welterweight division, “J-Lau” hopes to parlay an impressive win next month against Bradley into a top 10 ranking and eventually a UFC lightweight title shot in 2009.

Don King Joins Nike To Promote Potential World Tennis Classic Showdown ‘The Grapple in the Apple’

NEW YORK CITY— Nike has invited the promoter of the people, Don King, to join them in creating a significant campaign to bring all the people to bear witness to the two greatest tennis players in the world—No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 2-ranked Roger Federer—and for them to reach even greater fame and acclaim at New York’s annual U.S. Open Tennis Championships

They have dubbed the players’ potential Open showdown “The Grapple in the Apple” and believe they can help expose Nadal and Federer to all of the people, from the masses to the classes.

“This rivalry is unrivaled in mankind, history in the making,” King said. It is an irresistible force against and immovable object, and something has got to give—and give it will at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York. I guarantee you it will be a September to remember.”

The 2008 U.S. Open—one of four Grand Slam events in tennis each year—begins today and runs through Sept. 7 in Flushing, N.Y., and Nike felt the indefatigable boxing promoter (who turned 77 last week) would be the perfect person to join them to help bring the players’ exquisite brand of athleticism to the largest audience possible.

King will serve as a creative partner and a voice for the promotion. Nike is working with longtime creative agency Wieden & Kennedy and Don King Productions.

“We worked with Wieden to develop the Don King idea,” Nike Vice President of U.S. Brand Management Ken Dice said. “When we brought Don in, we restructured our original idea around some of his insights.

“How often do we bring in a third creative partner to the table with a veteran marketing agency and shake things up by saying, ‘Hey, we have this idea and we think you can help us.’ And Nike has always been about collaboration with its athletes, so we brought in a promotional expert to help promote the U.S. Open and this rivalry in a way that maybe we haven’t done in a very long time.”

Newspaper advertisements, taxi toppers, mobile billboards and two “First Amendment Ad Vans”—one for Federer and one for Nadal—launched the campaign in New York City as did a Thursday press conference hosted by King, where he regaled the tennis stars and assembled media with his soaring oratory.

Nadal and Federer sat on a dais separated by King, enjoying their first experience of listening to the legendary promoter describe them to the audience. They seemed to genuinely appreciate King’s enthusiastic pronouncements about their tennis prowess—not to mention snappy one-liners and rhymes that left both the players and the assembled New York media howling in laughter.

“I know Rafa and Roger ain’t no kin, so they can bend,” King quipped. “Don’t let the smiles and embraces fool you. These two want nothing more than to walk off with the 2008 U.S. Open championship, and there will only be one man that does that. Will it be Rafa, or will it be Roger?”

Federer and Nadal have created a tremendous rivalry on the court over the last five years—while remaining good friends off the court—and their recent, epic four-hour, five-set finals meeting at Wimbledon was so tremendous that many have proclaimed it the best tennis match ever played.

The two tennis greats have made it to the final match in the two most recent Grand Slam events, and if they make it to the finals at this year’s U.S. Open, the hope is to bring on added attention to them and their hoped-for showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium main court on Sept. 7 that millions more would be watching on television around the world.

Nike, like King, has long been known for their vision, creative thinking, innovative and imaginative marketing approach. With Nike’s collaborative efforts in the design of its products—and King’s pioneering trailblazer initiative—it made for a natural marketing combination. Nike inviting Don King to help make as many people as possible aware of these two phenomenal athletes was a perfect fit with Nadal and Federer at the top of their games, making tennis history with each meeting.

King said the marketing plan was put together in what he called, “Creative Mental Ecstasy. It was a great exchange of ideas. Working together works. This is a great example of two entities creating something even greater for the benefit of the people.”

FIRE WINS LONG ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

FIRE WINS LONG ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a very productive year in Boxing, Fire once again: came, saw and conquered. This time it was at the Long Island Championships. Fire was supposed to face this year's runner up to her, Alexis Asher, via the New York Golden Gloves in the Long Island Championships finals. After what some deemed as a controversial fight, Fire made sure that when Asher signed for the next Championship Tournament that she too would be signing up also to quench any doubts that Asher or her supporters may have had about the Golden Gloves. In other words, Fire was looking to deliver a beat-down. But to her surprise (but not mine) Asher didn't show up at the finals for the Championship to redeem herself for a fight that she felt she won at the Garden ... So much for talk.

Instead, Fire got to meet a game opponent, Wally Wallo who actually started boxing before Fire. It was a good fight with Wally taking things to the inside and Fire matching her and then taking control on the outside with her jab and movement. Wally had a few good moments throwing body shots with bad intention but Fire was able to handle those shots while returning the favor by giving her a bloody nose & almost stopping Wally in the third round with an eight count. Fire wins this one on speed, power and ring generalship.

“Beibut The Beast” Boxing’s Top Secret Project

KAZAKHSTAN– Former Kazakhstan Olympian Beibut “The Beast” Shumenov is the greatest fighter in the world that most boxing fans haven’t heard of, at least not at this stage of his young professional career.

In less than 10 months, 24-year-old Shumenov has won all six of his pro fights, five by knockout, capturing three title belts – WBC Asian Boxing Council, WBO Asia Pacific and PABA Interim light heavyweight championships.

Earlier this month in Chimkent, Kazakhaston, Shumenov (6-0, 5 KOs) easily won a 12-round decision, in his WBC and WBO Asian title defenses, against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs), whose victims over the years include a pair of future Hall of Famers, Roy Jones, Jr. and James Toney (twice). Beibut won every round, nearly stopping Griffin in the opening round, en route to shutting out the former world champion by lop-sided scores of 120-108, 120-108, 120-107. After the fight Griffin, rated No. 22 by the WBA, was taken to the hospital for stitches for a cut over his eye as well as to get his ribs examined after Beibut’s devastating body attack.

Shumenov, already rated No. 15 by the WBO prior to his victory against Griffin, was highly touted in the 2004 Olympics, winning his opening bout against Polish representative Aleksy Kuziemsky (presently 15-0 as a pro prospect), 37-22. Amidst rumors of a hand injury, Beibut was defeated in the round of 16 by Turkey’s Ihsan Yildorim Tarham, 27-19, in the same light heavyweight division Andre Ward of the United States won a gold medal.

Last November in North Carolina, Shumenov won his pro debut with a first-round TKO of Walter Edwards, followed in order by an opening-round knockout of Cedric Howard in Florida, and fourth-round TKO of 68-fight veteran Shannon Miller in Tennessee. In April,

Beibut put Donnell Wiggins (24-10-4) to sleep in the second round of their fight in Kazakhstan for the WBC Asian and PABA Interim light heavyweight crowns. Ten days later, Beibut stopped Lavell Fingers (26-2) in the first-round of their April 22 fight, also held in Kazakhstan. Beibut successfully defended his two Asian titles and also collected the PABA Interim crown.

Trained by Kenny Adams and advised by E Point K Consulting, Shumenov is resting in Kazakhaston and will return to Las Vegas in late September, early October to prepare for his next fight. Beibut plans to make a title run in 2009.

The word is slowly getting out in boxing: “Beibut The Beast” is on the loose!
