Philadelphia, PA— Undefeated super bantamweight prospect Teon Kennedy, of North Philadelphia, goes for his 11th win as a pro when he takes on Felipe Almanza, of Lorica, Colombia, in a scheduled eight-round contest Friday evening, Nov. 14, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets, next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. First of eight fights at 7.30 p.m.
Topping the eight-fight card is a 10-round contest for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super flyweight title between Raul Martinez, of San Antonio, TX, and Victor Proa, of Monterrey, Mexico. Both men are undefeated: Martinez is 23-0, 13 K0s; Proa is 26-0-2, 19 K0s.
The Martinez-Proa contest, as well as the 10-round welterweight semifinal between Alex Camacho, of Austin, TX, and Edvan Barros, of Bahia, Brazil, will be televised live by Telefutura/Univision as part of a two-hour Solo Boxeo broadcast beginning at 8pm EST.
Kennedy, 22, scored his most impressive win July 18 when he knocked out previously unbeaten Thomas Snow, of Washington, DC, in two rounds at the New Alhambra. He followed that with a six-round decision over Robert DaLuz, of Jacksonville, FL, on Sept. 19 in Hockessin, DE.
Earlier this year, Kennedy earned an eight-round decision over Castulo Gonzalez, of Lynn, MA, at the New Alhambra.
A pro less than two years, Kennedy is 10-0, 5 K0s. As an amateur, he won the 2004 National Golden Gloves championship at 112 pounds.
Almanza, 32, has a 14-14-1 record with seven knockouts. He spent most of his career in Colombia and re-located to the United States in 2008 and now trains with Lenny DeJesus in New York.
“Before I came along Almanza was just taking fights on his own and using anybody he could find to work in his corner,” DeJesus said. “That’s all changed now that he’s with me. You’ll see a different fighter.”
Almanza lost an eight-round decision this year to Eric Morel, of Puerto Rico, who once held a piece of the world flyweight title, and he also lost to former world title challenger Wilfredo Valdez, of Colombia.
Dennis Hasson, of Kensington, takes on Ariel Espinal, of Brooklyn, NY, in a six-round super middleweight contest and lightweight Victor Vasquez, of North Philadelphia, faces Mario Galan, of Hollywood, FL, in a six-round junior welterweight match.
Junior lightweight Anthony Flores, of North Philadelphia, will see action in a six-round fight.
Two four-rounders complete the card.
The show is being promoted by Top Rank, Inc., in association with Peltz Boxing Promotions and Joe Hand Promotions.

Cunningham vs. Adamek Newark Press Conference Quotes
NEWARK, N.J.— International Boxing Federation cruiserweight world champion Steve “USS” Cunningham and former world champion Tomasz Adamek foreshadowed their Dec. 11 meeting at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. at a press conference today at the one-year-old venue.
“I work very hard because boxing is my job,” Cunningham, from Philadelphia, said. “My goal is to be the greatest of all time. I know it’s a lofty goal but I want to the best I possibly can be.
“I want Adamek to bring his best on December 11 in Newark. He’s a family man like me but it’s my job to put my hands on him and that’s what I’m going to do.
“I’m a true world champion. I’ve fought in South Africa, Germany and in Poland, twice. I’m more popular in Europe than I am in America right now but that’s about to change. I want to give the world a true cruiserweight world champion that will stay in the division and defend his titles for years to come.”
Adamek, from Poland now living and training in Jersey City, N.J., says he will bring his vaunted right-hand punching power from light heavyweight to the 200-pound limit.
“Steve’s a nice guy but I’m going to beat him, Adamek, the IBF No. 1-ranked cruiserweight, said. “He’s a world champion and I respect him but I will win. Steve’s quick and dynamic. It will be a great fight.
“It made me weak to make 175 pounds against Chad Dawson and I was still able to knock him down. My right hand is bigger at cruiserweight. I’ll be stronger and carry my punch to the 200-pound limit.”
The press conference was co-hosted by event promoters Don King Productions and Main Events. Both Don King and Kathy Duva, as well as New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame President Henry Hascup, spoke of the fact this marks the first time since Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano met in Newark for the third and final time in 1948 that a world-championship boxing match has been staged in the city.

O’Connor fighting Nov. 11 in Florida
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate Danny O’Connor, coming off of an impressive pro debut September 17 in Manchester (NH), in which, he stopped Jose Guerrido at 1:55 of the second round, returns to the ring November 11 on the “Bad Boys of Boxing” card at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.
O’Connor (1-0, 1 KO) is matched against Bahamian light welterweight Anthony Woods (5-10, 2 KOs) in a four round bout. “I’m very excited to be fighting at the Hard Rock,” O’Connor said. “I had the opportunity to attend a fight there about a year ago and I was impressed by how it was so well run. MIAMI- The fight that could define his career in the super middleweight division is less than month away, and news from Jermain Taylor's camp in Miami, Florida is very good. It's good, that is, unless you ask Jeff Lacy, Jermain Taylor's opponent for the November 15th fight "All Or Nothing". HBO World Championship Boxing will televise the bout from Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (10:15pm ET / 9:15pm CT / 7:15pm PT).

"Training is going very well for me, I'm on schedule with everything. I know Jeff is working just as hard with his preparations, but I feel very confident about November 15th. This is the longest I have been out of the ring since I turned professional and the time off gave me time to put my career in total focus."
Ozell Nelson is serving as Taylor's lead trainer for the second consecutive fight and likes the intensity & focus Jermain has brought to training camp.
"We are on schedule," Nelson said. "Jermain is in tremendous spirits and looks very good. He is enjoying this training camp with a commitment and purpose more than I have ever seen before."
Perhaps the environment is helping, because there is certainly good memories in Miami. Jermain is training in the Sunshine State for the first time since he defended his Undisputed Middleweight Championship on December 2, 2005, with a second straight victory over Bernard Hopkins.
"I have good memories from Miami, " Taylor said. "Miami is like my second home, I have always liked training in Miami. Everything is great here and I'm feeling good about everything as I prepare for
Jeff Lacy on Nov. 15th."
PUNCHING MORE THAN AIR:
Jermain Taylor is steadily moving into more aggressive stages of his training camp, moving away from conditioning and into more sparring work this week.
"We have some great sparring partners here and Jermain is really getting some good work," said Nelson. "We are still getting our running in, getting our legs right, but it's time to start hitting people too."
Taylor is already sparring 10 rounds a day and will move into 12-round sessions next week. One change from previous camps is that Taylor in interacting a lot more with his sparring partners, talking and joking with them, and taking advice from them. For this fight, it's all hands on deck.
"Everything is on the line for me with this fight, this is a total team effort with everyone involved with camp," said Taylor. " My sparring partners are really giving me some good work, It feels good to get there with my sparring partners, they are really pushing me."

Ozell Nelson and Jermain Taylor have been watching plenty of videotape from Taylor's two losses to middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, the only two losses of his career. The pair saw Taylor getting
hit with Pavlik's right hand too often, so they've gone to work on better defense in training camp.
"You've got to work on defense," Nelson said. "You don't want your offense to be your defense. We are going to dodge that right hand, stay behind him. Lacy's nickname is "Left Hook," but he has a
sneaky right hand. We're going to stay away from that."
But camp has been about more than defense. Much of the sparring and shadow-boxing work has been focused on getting Taylor to use his left hand more and Ozell expects that it will be Taylor who brings the fight to Lacy.
"I want him to dictate the pace, be more aggressive with his left hand, hooking off the left and jabbing," Nelson said. "We don't want to let Lacy plant his feet and get comfortable. We don't need to knock
Jeff Lacy out. I want him to box Jeff, move and pivot and frustrate him. Relax and dictate the fight."
Taylor has a more simple strategy.
"I just want the win," Taylor said. "I would be happy with a knockout, but what's important is that I dictate the fight and come away with the victory. I'm going to fight my fight."
RESTED AND READY:
Jermain Taylor will be stepping into the ring after nearly nine months away from boxing. Ozell Nelson was concerned how Taylor's transition back to competitive boxing would be after the longest layoff of his professional career, but so far, in training camp there have been no signs of rust.
"I was very concerned about the long layoff," Nelson said. "But Jermain needed the time off. His mental attitude and focus has been great. He wants to get back to winning and being in a position to go for another title."
Taylor said he was ready to get back in the ring before camp even started. Now that he's in the middle of camp, it's like he never left the ring.
"I've been doing this so long, it's part of my life and my profession. The nine months layoff was good for me, it allowed me to set some new goals for myself and to take a good look at where I am in my career and where I want to go. "

DEMETRIUS HOPKINS REFUTES ANY CLAIM THAT HE SIGNED ANY DOCUMENT OR FACILITATED THE REMOVAL OF EARL MORTON FOR REFEREE OF PAVLIK – HOPKINS IN ANY WAY
PHILADELPHIA— Contrary to reports that have surfaced on the internet, undefeated Jr. Welterweight, Demetrius Hopkins did not sign any affidavit that led to the removal of referee Earl Morton from this past week’s showdown between Kelly Pavlik and Demetrius’ uncle, Bernard Hopkins.
Hopkins is adamant that he didin't provide any verbal or written information.
Morton was replaced by Benjy Esteves after Morton was alleged to have a friendship with the elder Hopkins.
“I have no idea where anyone would get that I signed something. Have my uncle and I had disagreements this year? Yes. But I would never do anything like that to interfere in his career. I would have no idea if he was friends with this guy and for a report to come out like that is hurtful to me because I am not that kind of a person.” said Hopkins.
“I am very happy for my uncle on his performance on Saturday and for anyone to make something like that up is just horrible reporting.”
Hopkins manager Cameron Dunkin also backs Hopkins, “He didn’t sign anything at any time.”
If anyone would know, it would be Dunkin because he manages Pavlik as well as Demetrius Hopkins
Hopkins, 28-0-1 with eleven knockouts is ranked #9 by the WBC, #11 by the IBF, and #11 by the WBO will have his next fight announced shortly and is looking forward to challenging for the Jr. Welterweight championship

PROVIDENCE– Two-time world title challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr., runner-up in Season One of The Contender, finds himself training at home in a comfort zone as he prepares for his IBO super middleweight title fight November 13 against Sakio “The Scorpian” Bika, winner of Season Three of The Contender, at the newly renovated Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
“Tough & Tested,” co-promoted by the Tournament of Contenders and Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), will air nationally live on Versus television. The co-promoters have called for a ‘Pink Out’ (everybody wearing something colored pink) to show support for the Gloria Gemma Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from ticket and T-shirt sales will benefit the Gloria Gemma Foundation for research into early breast cancer detection.
Manfredo (31-5, 16 KOs), the reigning NABF Interim champion, is the WBC No. 13 rated super middleweight. Fighting in front of his hometown fans, “The Pride of Providence” sports a perfect 16-0 (10 KOs) record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) in the same Providence building as his Nov. 13th showdown against Bika. Manfredo’s five pro career losses have all come at the hands of world champions.
“I’m a family man, blue collar guy who goes to the gym (Manfredo’s Gym in nearby Pawtucket) and takes care of business. I’m a fighter, not a reality star, who is going to become world champion November 13th fighting in front of his family and friends in Providence. All of my best fights have been in Rhode Island, especially at The Dunk, and being in a comfort zone is the main reason. I never really loved boxing or training until now. You know I hated going to the gym in California. Freddie Roach is a great trainer, but I missed being home with my family. “Bika’s a guy ranked higher than me who has fought two world champions. He may have lost but he’s game. His style is made for me. I wanted him and got him for a world title fight. Bika reminds me of (Joey) Spina, but he’s more disciplined and stronger in the mind than Joey. They’re both big, strong and wide shots. They have similar styles and I’m very confident. I’m not a trash talker, but I took out Spina in 2 1/2 rounds, so, I guess, it’ll take me 4 ½ or 5 rounds to stop Bika.”
IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight title-holder Bika (26-3-2. 16 KOs), a 2000 Cameroon Olympian now fighting out of Australia, won The Contender III with a dramatic eighth round stoppage of Bridgeport, Connecticut native Jaidon Codrington in the finale in Boston. Bika, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 8 by The Ring magazine, hasn’t been stopped in 31 pro fights.
“I like this style of match-ups,” explained Peter’s father and head trainer, Peter Manfredo, Sr. “Bika is strong and durable but wide. If you just stand in front of him, he can punch you out. You either stay on the outside controlling the fight with jabs or go inside and use uppercuts. I know that I’m in for a fight. He’s a legitimate fighter, ranked in the top 10 by Ring. Duddy returns vs. Hill in NYC; Headlines “The Grande Estate” Nov. 21 at Roseland Ballroom
MIAMI– Undefeated sensation “Ireland’s” John Duddy returns to action November 21st in his adopted New York City home, headlining “The Grande Event” against veteran Sam “The Punching Policeman” Hill, at famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.
Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs), on his way from the middleweight to light middleweight division, is fighting at 158 pounds against Hill (17-9-1, 10 KOs), who has beaten former world champion and Olympic gold medalist David Reid (TKO9), and fought world champions Jermain Taylor and Maselino Masoe.

BUTE’S POPULARITY IN CANADA IS SIMPLY OFF THE CHARTS; IBF Super Middleweight Champ Will Defend Against Librado Andrade, Friday, Oct. 24, 2008,
NEW YORK– Lucian Bute’s popularity in Canada has quickly reached Gretzky-like proportions with the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion ready to defend his title once again in Montreal on Friday, Oct. 24, in a special championship fight on ShoBox: The New Generation.
“In his last two fights, only the Montreal Canadiens playoffs games have been more popular sporting events on television,” said David Messier, the director of communication for InterBox, which promotes Bute’s fights in Montreal, the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec.
Since March 2006, Lucian has been the main attraction of every InterBox event at the Bell Centre, home of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens. His boxing abilities and his style have made him popular among sports fans. His charisma, kindness and generosity have made him a national hero.
America’s neighbors to the north are all abuzz about Bute. With only one previously televised fight in the U.S., America’s boxing fans will get their second look at Bute (22-0, 18 KOs) when he takes on once-beaten, No.1 ranked challenger Librado Andrade (27-1, 21 KOs) of La Habra, Calif., on SHOWTIME on Friday at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
“He is among the most sound, technically proficient fighters in the game,” said ShoBox analyst Steve Farhood. “Although he doesn’t have a flashy style or early-round knockout power, he is refreshing to watch because he's never off-balance, he doesn't fall in after punching, and he fights with calm and poise. Something tells me he would really have prospered going the old championship distance of 15 rounds.
He continued: “For the past few years, the super middleweight division has been all about Joe Calzaghe and then Mikkel Kessler. Bute has to begin to close the gap of recognition. He's already won a title. Now he is looking to establish himself as the best 168-pounder in the world. That's a tough assignment because Kessler is still around, but a win over Andrade will be a big step because Andrade is not only a universally respected challenger, but also the toughest opponent of Bute's career to date.
In a country where hockey has always been king, Bute has garnered interest from sports and non-sports fans alike in Quebec and throughout the entire country. A native of Galat, Romania, Bute moved to Canada in October 2003 when he was 23 years old.

On Feb. 29, in a title defense against William Joppy, a 10-round TKO, there were 1.25 million viewers, according to Messier.
Bute’s trainer Stephane Larouche said the crowd goes wild when he enters the ring. “As of right now, Lucian is the biggest attraction in Montreal,” he said. “When he did his first main event, we sold like, 7,000 seats, then 9,000 seats, then 10,000 seats. It always gets higher and higher. He’s got that charisma in the ring. So far, he’s the talk of the town in Montreal. I think that boxing has never been this popular in Montreal, and Lucian is one of the keys in that right now.”
Messier said there are three big reasons for Bute’s immense popularity: He simply wins, he gives back and he has embraced the French-Canadian culture.
“The main reason he is so popular is because he learned the French language,” he said. “He made the effort to learn French and the people are recognizing him for it.”
Bute is also the foundation president at InterBox. This foundation was created two years ago for young children with difficulties at school and for kids with behavior problems. Last summer, the foundation conducted a youth boxing training camp for 16 children between the ages of 11 and 17. They lived and trained for a week as a boxer would prepare for a fight. A second camp is planned next year.

Legendary Boxing Promoter Invited to Speak at International Peace Conference In the Middle East
Don King Will Join Panel Discussion on ‘Overcoming Hurdles through Sports’
Deerfield Beach, Florida— Legendary boxing promoter Don King will be speaking at an international peace conference organized by Peres Center for Peace, an international non-profit organization that promotes peace and reconciliation in the Middle East, on October 27th at the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Mr. King will participate as a panelist and share his thoughts on the unique ability of sports to transcend barriers in language, politics, religion, and gender and how sports have been used as a powerful peacemaking tool.
Joining Mr. King in the discussion will be Joseph Blatter, President of FIFA; Ramon Calderon, President, Real Madrid Football Club; Alex Gilady, Founder and President of Keshet and Senior Vice President, NBC Sports and Olympics; Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Vice-Chair, Laureus World Sport Academy and Paralympic Gold Medalist; Edwin Moses, Chair, Laureus World Sport Academy and Olympic Gold Medalist; and Jibril Rajoub, President of the Palestinian Football Federation.
“Since the Rumble in the Jungle in 1974 featuring Muhammad Ali and George Foreman and the following year with the Thrilla in Manila where Ali faced Joe Frazier for the third and final time, I have experienced first hand how sports can make a difference in bringing people from different countries, races and religions together to achieve things many once felt were unachieveable,” King said.
“Sports speak a universal language that offers powerful tools to promote peace, tolerance, and understanding between people. Sports have the unique ability to bring people who would not normally join together to cross the lines of religion, gender, race, and geography. I am convinced the value of sports, if better recognized and utilized, could contribute to a more equal, just, fair, and peaceful world.”
The panel discussion will take place on Monday, October 27th and is part of a three-day seminar beginning on Sunday, October 26th. The annual seminar commemorates the formation of the Peres Center for Peace in Israel.
The Peres Center for Peace is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental organization founded in 1996 by Mr. Shimon Peres, President of Israel and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, with the aim of furthering his vision in which people of the Middle East region can work together to build peace through socio-economic cooperation and development, and people-to-people interaction. Top rated light welterweight contender Frankie Figueroa signs with Square Ring; Fighting Gavin Rees Nov. 8 on Jones-Calzaghe in Madison Square Garden
LAS VEGAS– NABF light welterweight champion Frankie “El Gato” Figueroa has signed a promotional contract with Roy Jones, Jr.’s Square Ring Promotions and the Bronx fighter has been added to the November 8 Jones-Calzaghe HBO PPV card at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Figueroa (19-2, 13 KOs) has been in Las Vegas training for his Nov. 8th 10-round fight against former WBA light welterweight Gavin “The Rock” Rees (27-1, 13 KOs). “Fighting Rees is a phenomenal first step for me by my new promoter,” Figueroa said. “Square Ring is doing its job and I’m doing mine by focusing to fight my best. To be fighting on the Jones-Calzaghe card will catapult me to a different level….the big-time! I want to thank Team Rees for allow me to fight Gavin. It’s a great opportunity for me as well as Gavin. Beating a former world champion would show my great heart and chin and for him a win would be good coming off of his first loss. Millions of fans will be watching me take a step toward a world title.”
Figueroa, a Puerto-Rican-American born in Spanish Harlem, not too long ago was counseling rebellious teens in New York City. He was a 2-time New York City high school wrestler, 14-0 as a senior, who didn’t start boxing until eight years ago after taking advice from a friend.
Now 30 and in his sixth year fighting as a pro, “El Gato” is one of the top rated light welterweights in the world: WBC #4, IBF #5 and WBA #15. His last fight on May 5 was a win by 12-round decision against Luis Rodriquez (22-1), extending Frankie’s win streak to 11, dating back to March of 2005.
Welch-born Rees, who has never fought outside of the United Kingdom as a pro, captured the WBA title in 2007, winning a 12-round decision from Souleymane M’baye (35-1-1). This past March, though, Rees suffered his first loss when Andriy Kotelnik (28-2-1) stopped him in the 12th round for the WBA crown.
“A good win against Rees should position me for a title shot against Kotelnik, or a fight against any of the other top 140-pounders win the world, in 2009,” the U.S. Army veteran Figueroa commented. “I see a lot of myself in Rees, but I’m a little quicker, a lot stronger, and a better thinker. I haven’t fought too often at home in New York City lately and this fight is going to be colossal. It’s going to be crazy like the last time I fight in Madison Square Garden (November 11, 2006), when I beat Joey Rios (14-0) on the Klitschko-Brock card for the New York State title (WDEC10). Rios was ‘King Kong’ in the Bronx at that time but people in New York City knew what I could do.
“I’m training in Las Vegas because my trainer, Buddy McGirt, is there working with Paulie Malignaggi (for his Nov. 22 fight against Ricky Hatton). I go where my trainer is. I love it. I’m training at Bones Adams’ gym and there’s a lot of good sparring there.”
Figueroa is nicknamed “El Gato” – The Cat – because he was the only one quick enough to catch a cat that was a mascot at his original gym in the Bronx. This cat is now a fan-friendly, southpaw slugger who is coming out of the bag on Nov. 8 at home in the Big Apple.
“At this stage of my career,” Frankie concluded, “Rees is my biggest fight and I’m getting a great opportunity to knock down the doors for a world title fight. I’ve had good fights in the past but nothing came out of it. Things are going to be different after this fight.”

No Holds Barred: Steve Nelson and Oct. 24 Shark Fight Promotions MMA Card in Amarillo, Texas

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990's in Amarillo, Texas.
Our focus on this show is the debut mixed martial arts card being held Friday, October 24, in Amarillo, of Shark Fight Promotions (http://sharkfights.com).
This card, which will take place at the Amarillo National Center on the Tri-State Exposition grounds right near Interstate 40, will also be available on an Internet pay-per-view. Steve will be the lead commentator for this Internet pay-per-view.
Besides the fight card, there will also be a tribute on this show to Amarillo native, the late Evan Tanner. One dollar of every pay-per-view purchase will be donated to the Evan Tanner Scholarship Fund.
In a lengthy interview, we discuss the debut of Shark Fight Promotions in Amarillo, this fight card and which fighters to watch most closely, mixed martial arts and wrestling in Amarillo and Texas, and more.
We also open the show with some comments on the masterful performance of Bernard Hopkins this past Saturday night, Oct. 18, in defeating Kelly Pavlik by a lopsided unanimous decision.

The Boxing Standard Hopkins-Pavlik
There's a lot to be said both culturally and generationally about last night's fight. Two things jump out at me. The first is that Bernard Hopkins is never going to be snookered into a loss. You've got to really know how to fight in order to beat him. He's a terrible choice as an opponent for someone on the verge of stardom who hasn't been entirely tested. The second thing (and I think it's a very sophisticated point regarding a fighter's development) is that Kelly Pavlik's fate was probably sealed before the fight by the kind of "blue collar hero" marketing that was done on his behalf (to say nothing of Bob Arum's vast overestimation of him.) This type of pigeonholing (which made it necessary for Kelly to stick with an amateur trainer when he could have had a pro) forced Kelly Pavlik to be one kind of fighter. He's capable of learning (witness the vast improvement between his first and second Taylor fights), but can't do that if he's supposed to fight in a specific manner.
