The intraleague season opener for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby was held Saturday, April 25, at the Hunter College Sportsplex in Manhattan, New York, between the Bronx Gridlock and the Queens of Pain. Da Bronx avenged their only loss of the 2008 season, which was to Queens in the 2008 league championship bout, by outscoring Queens by a comfortable margin, 121-78. These are two of the best individual teams in the U.S., as the Gotham Girls Roller Derby won the 2008 Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) (http://www.wftda.com/) national championship, and the Queens and Bronx teams were the best in the best league.
The halftime entertainment included an electrifying performance by world champion trick roper, performer, and singer Chris McDaniel (http://chrismcdaniel.net/), which drew a loud and enthusiastic reaction from this largely New York crowd.
Right after this game, we spoke with Anaïs Ninja and Rat-A-Tat Kat about their first official league games, why they have become derby girls, what the appeal of this sport is to them, and much more. Anaïs Ninja also told us about her transition from martial arts and boxing to roller derby.
Roller derby is considered by many to be the fastest-growing sport in America, so make sure to keep up with what is going on in this fun, sexy, and exciting sport. The next Gotham Girls Roller Derby game is Saturday, May 16, between the Brooklyn Bombshells and the Manhattan Mayhem, also at Hunter College in New York.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Konrad Pi, the co-founder of the Art of War Fighting Championship (http://mmachina.com) and president of the Adoria Entertainment Group in Beijing, China.
The next show for the Art of War Fighting Championship, scheduled for May 23 at the National Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Beijing, will feature a full card of mixed martial arts fights, headlined by a main event with rising Chinese star Wu Hao Tian facing the up-and-coming Japanese fighter, Yutaka Kobayashi. Also fighting on this card will be Rolles Gracie Jr. of Brazil, as well as Malik Mawlayi of Sweden taking on Fransino Tirta of Indonesia, and many other fighters from Asia and around the world.
This event will also be an international "coming out party for the Art of War Fighting Championship," said Mr. Pi in our lengthy interview. According to the Art of War, this show is being held "under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates." There is expected to be in attendance "a delegation of over 300 students, athletes, press representatives and martial arts fans from the United Arab Emirates."
In addition, there will be a reunion of the first family of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Gracies, who are also of course mixed martial arts pioneers. So far listed as confirmed to attend are Rickson Gracie, Royce Gracie, Renzo Gracie, and Royler Gracie. Other notables scheduled to attend this event are Demian Maia, Fabricio Werdum, Ricardo Liborio, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro, Bas Rutten, Josh Barnett, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Tim Sylvia, Jeremy Horn, referees Yuji Shimada and Big John McCarthy, Stephen Quadros, Michael Buffer, Todd Hester, Luca Atalla, and yours truly, Eddie Goldman.
The organizers of the Art of War Fighting Championship hope to use this event to begin to establish their promotion as not only the leading mixed martial arts company in China, the most populous country in the world, but also as one of the top world-class mixed martial arts events in the world. Accomplishing that, they are well aware, will take time, but this event is a major early step along that path.
In a lengthy interview with Konrad Pi, we discussed this May 23 event, the overall plans for the Art of War Fighting Championship, the top fighters on this card, and the rules of this event, which are similar to the old Pride rules. We also discussed the role of martial arts in Chinese history and culture, the importance of both grappling and striking to the Art of War Fighting Championship, the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in China, cultural differences and perceptions between many people in China and the West which cause them to look at many aspects of the combat sports in differing ways, the relationship of the Art of War Fighting Championship organization to the government of the People's Republic of China, prefight medical testing required by the Art of War Fighting Championship, and more.

Hot N.E. prospect Danny O’Connor Ready for 6, heading to 135
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– With six pro fights under his belt since turning pro last September for Seminole Warriors Boxing, unbeaten prospect Danny O’Connor is now ready to move up to 6-round bouts and preparing to go down to the lightweight division.
2004 U.S. Olympic Team alternate O’Connor (6-0, 2 KOs) is coming off an impressive win by 4-round decision against 22-fight veteran Travis Hartman (9-12-1, 7 KOs) last Saturday night on the Froch-Taylor undercard on Showtime at MGM Grand Foxwoods in Ledyard, Connecticut.
O’Connor twice floored Hartman, who had been in against Cesar Chavez, Jr., en route to his sixth victory by judges’ scores of 40-34 three times. “I’m really starting to feel like a professional boxer,” O’Connor said. “I’m comfortable with everything – what I eat the day of the fight, how to prepare in the locker room – and I was very relaxed in the ring. I’m a perfectionist and there must be 100 things I think I could have done better, but other than a few minor things, I was happy with my performance. I still think I could have come quicker off my defense like I usually do and used a few more angles. But I do think it was my best fight as a pro.
“I’m usually amped-up in a fight but when I knocked down Hartman, instead of rushing, I looked to Dave in my corner and was patient. I loved fighting on a big card like that. I could tell it was different from the weigh in with Froch having such a big cheering section. There was a Showtime environment. I wasn’t nervous, more excited, because I wanted to put on a good show for the Showtime people and fans watching that hadn’t seem me fight before. I think I’m ready for my first 6-rounder and over the course of time I’ll get down to 135. My next fight I’ll probably weigh 138-139. I just have to concentrate on my good diet and we’ll see how long it’ll take for me to fight strong at 135. Right now, it’s just one fight at a time.”
The 23-year-old O’Connor, who defeated 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz a year ago in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet, hopes to be fighting again in June.
“I thought Danny looked real sharp and very relaxed in his fight,” head trainer and co-manager (with Rob Valle) David Keefe added. “He’s fought a lot of rounds (19) in his six pro fights and we believe he’s ready to step-up to fight 6-rounders.”

RUSSELL JR. FIGHT HIGHLIGHTS, INTERVIEW ON SHOBOX
TELECAST NOTE: 2008 Olympian Gary Russell, Jr., takes on Alvaro Muro in a four-round featherweight bout Friday night before the SHOWTIME telecast begins. Between the two featured fights, highlights will be shown of Russell’s fight and he will be interviewed about his transition from the amateur to professional ranks and what is next for the Washington D.C., resident. Russell is 2-0 since turning pro in January. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Russell never got to enter the ring as he missed the Olympic weigh-in hours after losing consciousness in his Olympic Village dorm room.

ALLAN GREEN CALLS OUT BUTE AND FROCH
With Allan “Sweetness” Green’s dazzling second-round knockout over Carlos De Leon Jr. on Saturday, he sent a message to the boxing world that he is back. Now, he has a message for the big names in the super middleweight division: Any time, any place.
First on Green’s mind is Carl Froch, the WBC champion who successfully defended his title with a dramatic 12th-round knockout over Jermain Taylor in Saturday night’s main event.
And since Froch traveled to America to fight Taylor, Green has no qualms about going to Froch’s homeland of Great Britain for a shot at the championship.
“No disrespect to Carl Froch, but I want that WBC title,” said Green (28-1, 20 KOs). “It's the title many of the greats I watched growing up held, and since both he and I took care of business last weekend, now the stage is set. He just made his big splash in America and I'm more than ready to make my mark in England.”
However, if a fight with Froch can’t be made immediately, Green has no intentions of waiting for him.
Undefeated IBF champion Lucian Bute was ringside at the MGM Theatre at Foxwoods on Saturday night, and Green is quite sure Bute took notice of his performance.
“If Froch has other less challenging plans, hopefully Lucian Bute has a closer view of my fists than his front row seat offered him last weekend,” said Green.
If neither of those title fights can be worked out, Green has yet another plan: a fight with former welterweight champion turned middleweight contender Paul Williams.

Calling out the retired Calzaghe left Green unimpressed and ready to give Williams a reason to not bypass the super middleweight division so quickly.

With Allan “Sweetness” Green’s dazzling second-round knockout over Carlos De Leon Jr. on Saturday, he sent a message to the boxing world that he is back. Now, he has a message for the big names in the super middleweight division: Any time, any place.
First on Green’s mind is Carl Froch, the WBC champion who successfully defended his title with a dramatic 12th-round knockout over Jermain Taylor in Saturday night’s main event.
And since Froch traveled to America to fight Taylor, Green has no qualms about going to Froch’s homeland of Great Britain for a shot at the championship.
“No disrespect to Carl Froch, but I want that WBC title,” said Green (28-1, 20 KOs). “It's the title many of the greats I watched growing up held, and since both he and I took care of business last weekend, now the stage is set. He just made his big splash in America and I'm more than ready to make my mark in England.”
However, if a fight with Froch can’t be made immediately, Green has no intentions of waiting for him.
Undefeated IBF champion Lucian Bute was ringside at the MGM Theatre at Foxwoods on Saturday night, and Green is quite sure Bute took notice of his performance.
“If Froch has other less challenging plans, hopefully Lucian Bute has a closer view of my fists than his front row seat offered him last weekend,” said Green.
If neither of those title fights can be worked out, Green has yet another plan: a fight with former welterweight champion turned middleweight contender Paul Williams.

“Rage At The River” reunion for McGirt & Ward;Joey “KO Kid” Spina vs. Tiwon Taylor headlines May 22nd show at Twin River Event Center, RI
PROVIDENCE– Legendary boxers James “Buddy” McGirt, Sr. and “Irish” Micky Ward began a friendship in 1986 that continues today. They will reunite May 22nd at “Rage At The River,” promoted Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment, Inc. (CES), as head trainers of fighters on that show.
McGirt, 2-time world champion in two different weight classes and former Trainer of the Year, will be training his son, middleweight James McGirt, Jr. (19-2-1, 9 KOs), who’ll be making his CES debut in a 6-round bout versus an opponent to be named. Ward, a participant in three Fights of the Year, will handle his nephew, lightweight Sean Eklund (6-3, 1 KO), against Jose Guzman (3-4-1) in a 4-round match.
“I think it’s great and I’m excited to be working the same show as Micky,” Buddy said. “He fought on my undercard in 1986, 16 years later were in opposite corners -- I had (Arturo) Gatti – and now we’re together again. Micky Ward was one fighter I didn’t want to fight. I always felt that, if he wanted to, he’d be a trainer. They don’t make fighters like Micky Ward anymore. We’re good friends.”
Ward remembers beating Jesus Carlos Velez (KO6) on Buddy’s undercard (Feb. 21, 1986) in Atlantic City. “Two years later I stopped Joey Ferrell in the first round,” Micky laughed and jokingly added, “the same fighter Buddy beat by (10-round) decision on that same 1986 card. I broke his rib. I was amazed by Buddy. I was in my fifth fight and he was close to fighting for a world title. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I want to be like him.’ I never wanted to fight him, though. Until the end of his career, he only lost to world champions, twice to the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Pernell Whitaker. Buddy’s a good guy, great fighter and trainer, and we’re friends. I’m enjoying the challenge of being a trainer but, I’m not on the same level as Buddy, who has trained a lot of world champions.”

“Irish Lightning” strikes Las Vegas Dean Byrne fights Jose Reynoso Friday night at South Point Hotel & Casino
LOS ANGELES– Unbeaten Irish light welterweight prospect Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne explodes in Las Vegas against Mexican southpaw Jose Reynoso (10-2, 1 KO) in a scheduled 8-round bout Friday night at South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The boxing world will be focused on Las Vegas this weekend for Saturday night’s mega-fight Saturday evening between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, but that show’s appetizer is the Sin City debut of the 24-year-old Byrne, who’ll also have Manny’s trainer, Freddie Roach, in his corner.
Byrne has found a home at Roach’s famed Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, where Dean has benefited from sparring with Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Juan Marquez. A veteran of more than 200 amateur fights, Byrne was an Irish National champion who turned pro in Australia, capturing the New South Wales State belt in only his fourth pro fight, and one fighter later added the Australian crown in a 10-round bout. On his way from Australia to relocate in Boston, Dean stopped in Los Angeles and trained at Wild Card, where Roach took an instant shine to his now protégé.
"Every fight counts, each one a stepping stone for Dean to reach his ultimate goal of winning a world title,” Byrne’s manager Steven Feder (Standing Eight Management) remarked. “To have Dean become champion of the world is what this is all about. He's sparred with so many champions in Wild Card Gym and his turn to wear the belt in the limelight of the ring is just a matter of time.

MADDALONE DOESN'T DISAPPOINT, STEVENS, MOUTON GO TO WAR
On Tuesday Night Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, presented its first installment of "VIP Boxing" at the elegant Russo's On The Bay in Howard Beach, NY. The card was made up of five entertaining fights, headlined by Star Boxing's heavyweight fan favorite Vinny Maddalone taking on Benji "Boom Boom" Baker.
Maddalone, who is known for his all-action come forward style, didn't disappoint his hometown fans, going straight at Baker from the opening bell, landing huge left hooks and thunderous overhand rights. A big overhand right as the bell sounded to end the first sent Baker down hard.
Rounds two and three saw more of the same from Maddalone, as he continuously stalked Baker, opening up on him with any chance he could. A heavy barrage of punches from Maddalone caused Baker to take a knee towards the end of round three.
In the fourth round a huge left hook to the body sent Baker down hard, Baker survived the round, but was clearly in bad shape. Upon the advice of the ringside physician the bout was stopped after the 4th, giving Maddalone the TKO victory. With the victory Maddalone improved his record to (32-5, 23KO) while Baker dropped to (18-6, 9KO). The victory sets up a huge international fight for Maddalone this summer. More details to come soon.
In the co-feature bout of the evening, Star Boxing's exciting super middleweight Curtis "Showtime" Stevens improved to 20-2, 14KO, winning an eight round war over dangerous Don Mouton (9-4-1, 8KO).
Mouton showed a granite chin throughout, but Stevens simply had too much fire power. Stevens worked off a good jab to set up his lethal left hook that seemed to connect every time he threw it. When Mouton would cover up on the ropes Stevens would open up, landing beautiful four and five punch combinations, but to Mouton's credit he took the shots well.
Each fighter had their moments throughout, but Stevens punches seemed to have much more of an effect.
In the 8th and final round both fighters engaged in a heavy exchange bringing the packed house to a standing ovation. All in all it was a very impressive performance for Stevens as he improved to a perfect 3- 0 under the Star Boxing banner.

DANIEL JACOBS ADDED TO MAY 2ND PACQUIAO VS. HATTON UNDERCARD
LOS ANGELES- Rising middleweight star and one of boxing's hottest prospects, Daniel "The Golden Child" Jacobs, has been added to the much anticipated May 2nd pay-per-view undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton: "The Battle of East and West" at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. FROCH NOTCHES EMPHATIC VICTORY IN FIRST U.S. TITLE DEFENSE;WILL RETURN TO ENGLAND UNDEFEATED AND STILL WORLD CHAMPION;GREEN FLOORS DE LEON, JR.
MASHANTUCKET, Conn.– Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) remained undefeated Saturday evening after a stellar comeback performance that had a near sell-out crowd of 3,726 on their feet when he knocked out former undisputed middleweight Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) to retain the World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight world title on SHOWTIME®.
"The Cobra" survived the first knockdown of his career and ended his biggest fight to date in emphatic fashion to retain his WBC 168-pound strap.
In the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING co-feature scheduled for 10-rounds, Allan Green (28-1, 20 KOs) impressed the crowd with his astonishing power after when he knocked down Carlos De Leon, Jr. (21-3-2, 14 KOs) three times in the second round before scoring a fourth and night-ending knock down.
In the second round, a vicious left hook was the beginning of the end for De Leon. In all, four knockdowns forced the referee to stop the fight.
The evening of fights, presented DiBella Entertainment and Hennessy Sports, emanated from MGM Grand Theater at MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Conn.
Froch, of Nottingham, England, had something to prove Saturday night, not only to the American audience, but to the naysayers who hadn’t given him credit as a world class champion. Taylor, of Little Rock, Ark., wanted to show the boxing world that he still had the heart, the skills and composition of the champion he once was.
With both coming out strong, Taylor outshined Froch and sent him to the canvas with a hellacious overhand right in the third round; the first time Froch has ever been down in his career. Froch recovered and was able to find his rhythm as he pressed the action in the middle rounds.
At the start of the 12th and final round, Froch felt that he needed a knockout to win the fight. And that is just what he got. Froch dropped Taylor using his solid jabs and strong right hand and, while Taylor was able to recover, he never fully regained his legs. At 2:46 of the 12th round after sustaining a flurry of monstrous punches, referee Michael Ortega stepped in and held a defenseless Taylor.
After the fight Froch said, “My trainer (Rob McCracken) told me I needed a big round in the 12th. He was right. You saw it, everybody saw it. I’m the champ.”
Regarding the stoppage, Froch said, “You could see he was badly hurt and not defending himself. He was not even looking at me at the end. It was a great decision by the referee. I had to make a statement on American soil and I did just that.”
Taylor respectfully called for a rematch after the fight when he said, “I want a rematch. He came over here and he really is a warrior. I know he’s got a good heart. I put 110% in the gym but he stayed with it and worked it.”
Asked whether he agreed with the stoppage Taylor replied, “He thought it was time to stop it so he stopped it. My hat is off to the ref.”
Green, of Tulsa, Okla., established his jab and firm right hand as soon as the fight began. After continuing to beat and overpower him, Green set up a lead right in the second round followed by a large left hook that sent De Leon to the canvas for the first of four knock downs in the round. Never truly recovered, De Leon continued to take a beating until the referee halted the fight at 1:06 of the second round.
After the fight Green said “I was here to make a statement. I was here to serve notice to Jermain Taylor and Carl Froch. I mean no disrespect but I want the winner of this fight. Lucian Bute is sitting here. I want these guys.”

UFC Undisputed Demo Drops Today / Tyson Not A Fan Of “Punch-Out”

Martin ‘Mac Man’ Lindsay Gleason's Gym (London)/P.U.G. Athletic; Return Of The Mac - Martin ‘Mac Man’ Lindsay Ready For Belfast Title Clash
Belfast’s Martin ‘Mac Man’ Lindsay (13-0) is coming home in style and is
more than ready for his biggest challenge to date, when he takes on
British Featherweight champion, Scotland’s Paul Appleby (14-0), for his
title on the 25th April at Ulster Hall in Belfast.
Lindsay, the current Irish Boxing Writer’s “Young Prospect Of The Year”,
secured the right to face Appleby for the coveted Lonsdale belt after a
stunning come-from-behind 9th round knockout of Liverpool’s Derry Mathews
in September ‘08 at David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye’s promotional debut event in
Sheffield.
26 year old Lindsay is particularly looking forward to the fight on the
25th April as it will be only the second time he will have fought in
front of his home crowd having campaigned in Canada for Orion promotions
since 2007.
Lindsay, who is managed by John Rooney Jnr. of Gleason’s Gym in London and
sponsored by P.U.G. Athletic, is clearly pleased to be home and has
nothing but praise for his Canadian former hosts when he said. "They put
on brilliant shows out in Canada, gave me some tough learning fights and
also delivered me my first title (winning the IBF Youth Featherweight
title against Uriel Barrera in October ‘07). They picked hard opponents
and I thrived on it.
As much as I enjoyed my time out there (in Canada), I was always hoping to
come back and fight in Ireland and England. Nobody from home really got to
see me fight out in Canada. Fighting in front of my home crowd will give
me a lot more profile and will actually allow people to see what I can do.
In any fight, especially at this level, you’re going to have have to dig
deep and pull it out. The home crowd does help to bring that out of you a
wee bit. It gives you a little bit extra. If things start going
pear-shaped you can always rely on the crowd for that extra boost.”

British Featherweight champion, Scotland’s Paul Appleby (14-0), for his
title on the 25th April at Ulster Hall in Belfast.
Lindsay, the current Irish Boxing Writer’s “Young Prospect Of The Year”,
secured the right to face Appleby for the coveted Lonsdale belt after a
stunning come-from-behind 9th round knockout of Liverpool’s Derry Mathews
in September ‘08 at David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye’s promotional debut event in
Sheffield.
26 year old Lindsay is particularly looking forward to the fight on the
25th April as it will be only the second time he will have fought in
front of his home crowd having campaigned in Canada for Orion promotions
since 2007.
Lindsay, who is managed by John Rooney Jnr. of Gleason’s Gym in London and
sponsored by P.U.G. Athletic, is clearly pleased to be home and has
nothing but praise for his Canadian former hosts when he said. "They put
on brilliant shows out in Canada, gave me some tough learning fights and
also delivered me my first title (winning the IBF Youth Featherweight
title against Uriel Barrera in October ‘07). They picked hard opponents
and I thrived on it.
As much as I enjoyed my time out there (in Canada), I was always hoping to
come back and fight in Ireland and England. Nobody from home really got to
see me fight out in Canada. Fighting in front of my home crowd will give
me a lot more profile and will actually allow people to see what I can do.
In any fight, especially at this level, you’re going to have have to dig
deep and pull it out. The home crowd does help to bring that out of you a
wee bit. It gives you a little bit extra. If things start going
pear-shaped you can always rely on the crowd for that extra boost.”

Manfredo looking Green (towards Duddy)
PROVIDENCE– As he heads back to the middleweight division, former world title challenger Peter Manfredo, Jr., rejuvenated by his impressive seventh-round knocked out of Walid “Tempete de Sable” Smichet last Saturday, has his sites set on “Ireland’s” John Duddy.
The 28-year-old Manfredo (32-6, 16 KOs), star of The Contender, Season I, is unable to attend Duddy’s fight tomorrow night (Apr. 24) in Newark, but he’ll be represented there by his promoter, Jimmy Burchfield (CES president), and father/trainer, Peter Manfredo, Sr.
“I was very happy getting a big win against Smichet, especially coming off my defeat to (Sakio) Bika,” Manfredo, Jr. said. “I boxed well, used my head and the knockout came at the end. I’m not where I want to be, yet. A couple of more wins and I’ll be ready for any middleweight. I’m a fighter, that’s what I do. I’ll fight anybody my promoter (Burchfield) and manager (Larry Army) put in front of me. Not too far down the road I want John Duddy. Knocking out Smichet, something Duddy couldn’t do was a plus for me. He’s a great guy and good fighter. We can make some money together. More importantly, though, it’s a fight that fans want and boxing needs; Italian versus Irish between two tough, exciting fighters.
“The last three years I fought as a super middleweight but I should have been fighting as a middleweight. The top super middleweights were just too big for me. When I lost the second fight to (Sergio) Mora – I really didn’t lose that fight – I felt that The Contender people would go with him and I wasn’t going to be their man. I thought moving up to super middleweight would be better for my career. I had good fights against (Scott) Pemberton and (Joey) Spina, then the call came to fight (Joe) Calzaghe for the world title. I got use to fighting at that heavier weight. But I want to be world champion and that’s why I’m going back to 160 pounds.”
The tentative plan calls for Manfredo to have two or three more fights before a high-profile bout against Duddy or, if he can’t get the Irishman into a fight, possibly Canadian champion Sebastien Demers. “We’d take a fight against Duddy right now,” Burchfield explained, “but it makes more sense to wait until after a couple of more fights for both of them. I’ve believed in Peter all along and I’ve never left his side. Some doubters felt he was all done after the Bika fight but he proved himself with a devastating knockout of Smichet. Some have said Peter can’t punch but that (Smichet) may be the Knockout of the Year. It was a tremendous confidence builder. I couldn’t have written the script better than it turned out against Smichet.
“Peter’s next fight will be at 163-164 and then 160. I think Manfredo-Duddy can be like Gatti-Ward or, even though it wasn’t the same ethnic-type fight, Paz-Haugen. Boxing wants to see fights like Manfredo-Duddy – it’s what boxing is about.”
Manfredo, Sr. liked what he saw from his son in Montreal. “He showed his boxing skills and that he was willing to listen,” he added. “He stopped a tough guy. Peter looked good and his defense was much better. He’s strong at this weight and will be even stronger at 160. Duddy’s a good fighter but we believe Peter is better. I like the potential Gatti-Ward comparisons; good for boxing and both camps. Everybody can come out on the plus side. It will be a barnburner, action-packed, one the public wants and needs.”

Shumenov targets Erdei
LAS VEGAS- Light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov, arguably the most ambitious fighter in the world, has targeted WBO champion Zsolt “Firebird” Erdei after his May 9th IBA World title fight against former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio, outdoors at Khadjimukan Stadium in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan.
The star-studded May 9 show is being presented by KZ Event Productions, owned by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, and headlined by Shumenov-Berrio in the 12-round main event.
2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles will also be on the line against Colombian knockout specialist Berrio (28-5, 27 KOs), rated No. 9 by the IBF and No. 11 by the WBC.
“We contacted Universum about Beibut fighting Erdei,” Chingis explained. “They promised to get back to us but never did. We’re not looking past Berrio by any means, he’s very dangerous, but we want a title shot against Erdei. Beibut has already beaten one world champion (Montell Griffin), as well as a world title challenger (Epifanio Mendoza) in his last fight, and now he’s fighting another former world champion, Berrio. We’ve challenged former world champions Clinton Woods, Glen Johnson, Julio Cesar Gonzalez and Byron Mitchell. None of them want to fight Beibut.
“Title contending opportunities should be about the quality, not the number, of opponents fought. Beibut’s only had seven pro fights, true, but look at whom he’s beaten. People forget that in 1978, Leon Spinks had only seven pro fights (6-0-1) when he beat the great Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight title. We never wanted to fight guys just to build-up Beibut’s record, rather, opponents with belts or former world champions. There’s no excuse because we’re self-promoted, so there are no middle men to deal with. Erdei has a title defense scheduled August 22 against TBA. We’ll be ready, willing and able for him.”
Former IBF light middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin will fight at home for the first time in seven years on May 9 in the 10-round co-feature against Luis “Tyson” Augusto Dos Santos (24-15, 20 KOs). Born in Russia, reigning NABF middleweight title-holder Karmazin (38-3-1, 24 KOs) was stationed in the military and later lived in Uralsk, Kazakhstan, where his son, Oleg, still resides and studies.
Also fighting on the May 9th card is former WBO light welterweight title-holder DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (33-11, 19 KOs) versus former Brazilian champion Sidney Siqueira (12-3-1, 7 KOs) and 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), who will be making his KZ Event debut, against WBC Latino and Brazilian title-holder Luzimar “Tiger of Itacre” Gonzaga (25-4, 20 KOs), in a pair of 8-round bouts against opponents to be determined.

Former IBF light middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin will fight at home for the first time in seven years on May 9 in the 10-round co-feature against Luis “Tyson” Augusto Dos Santos (24-15, 20 KOs). Born in Russia, reigning NABF middleweight title-holder Karmazin (38-3-1, 24 KOs) was stationed in the military and later lived in Uralsk, Kazakhstan, where his son, Oleg, still resides and studies.
Also fighting on the May 9th card is former WBO light welterweight title-holder DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (33-11, 19 KOs) versus former Brazilian champion Sidney Siqueira (12-3-1, 7 KOs) and 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), who will be making his KZ Event debut, against WBC Latino and Brazilian title-holder Luzimar “Tiger of Itacre” Gonzaga (25-4, 20 KOs), in a pair of 8-round bouts against opponents to be determined.

Curtain goes up for “Rage At The River” Joey “KO Kid” Spina headlines May 22nd show at Twin River Event Center, RI
PROVIDENCE – The beginning of a new Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) professional boxing series kicks-off May 22nd as world rated light heavyweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina headlines “Rage At The River” at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.“Rage At The River,” presented by CES in association with Twin River, launches a New England-based series at Twin River and Memorial Hall in Plymouth. Rehearsals were held earlier this year at both venues and the series goes into full swing May 22 in Lincoln and June 12 in Plymouth.
“This series will include some fighters positioning themselves for title fights and also provide valuable exposure for some of the best young talent in New England,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield explained. “What we are providing, though, is an evening of entertainment, not just competitive pro boxing, with singing, dancing and much more.”
Spina (24-1-1, 17 KOs), fighting out of Providence, is rated No. 12 in the WBA, as well as No. 13 by the WBC and WBO. He takes on veteran Tiwon Taylor (26-14-1, 19 KOs), former Carolina Boxing Association title-holder, who has been in against world champions Adrian Diaconu, Fabrice Tiozzo and Lou Del Valle, in the 8-round main event. “Joey Spina is one of the most exciting and hardest-hitting fighters in the world,” Burchfield noted. “He’s like Rocky Marciano in the sense he can be losing after six rounds and suddenly put his opponent to sleep with a single punch.”
Young middleweight James McGirt, Jr. 19-2-1, 9 KOs), from Vero Beach (FL), makes his CES debut in the 6-round co-feature against an opponent to be determined.. McGirt is trained by his father, former 2-time world champion and Trainer of the Year, James “Buddy” McGirt.
Also on the card in separate 6-round bouts are EBA super middleweight champion “Irish” Joe McCreedy (10-2-1, 5 KOs) against Victor Paz (9-7-1, 1 KO) and world featherweight title challenger Sandy “Lil’ Tyson” Tsagouris (9-1, 4 KOs) versus TBA.

Jay Holland has trouble finding sparring partners because he’s so tough. He also has a great following. Diego and Omar are two bright prospects from Rhode Island who both have a lot of upside.”

JOEY “MINNESOTA ICE” ABELL TO TAKE ON BILLY WILLIS ON MAY 15TH AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON
PHILADELPHIA— On Friday night, May 15th, Heavyweight knockout sensation Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell will take on streaking Billy Willis in a bout scheduled for eight rounds that will highlight a big night of boxing at The Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia.
Abell of Coon Rapids, Minnesota brings in a record of 23-4 with twenty-two knockouts and is riding high as he has stopped his last three opponents in the first round with the latest being over Galen Brown (32-10-1) this past April 4th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"SHOWTIME" ADDED TO VIP BOXING CARD
Exciting super middleweight contender, Curtis "Showtime" Stevens (19-2, 14KO) will look to improve to a perfect 3-0 under the Star Boxing banner, when he takes on dangerous Don Mouton (9-3-1, 8KO) on April 28th in an eight round super middleweight contest. Stevens vs. Mouton will be the co-feature bout of the evening for Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing premier installment of its new series "VIP Boxing." The bout will take place at the elegant Russo's On The Bay in Howard Beach, NY, and is headlined by Queens own heavyweight fan favorite Vinny Maddalone (31- 5, 22KO) taking on Benji "Boom Boom" Baker (18-6, 9KO), in a scheduled eight rounder.
STEVENS WITH PROMOTER JOE DEGUARDIA
The 24-year-old Stevens, who hails from Brownsville, NY, was one of the most touted amateur prospects to come out of New York in years when he turned pro back in 2004 at the age of 19. Stevens is a very exciting and aggressive boxer and has tremendous power in both hands, as witnessed by 14 of his 19 wins coming by way of knockout. Since joining the Star roster, Stevens is a perfect 2-0, 2KO's including a 48 second annihilation of Ray Smith in his last fight back in November. A single left hook to the temple from Stevens sent Smith down hard, and then stumbling across the ring upon attempting to get up.
Mounton is by no means a push over. In his last fight he knocked out Olympian Jerson Ravelo in the 8th round. Prior to the fight with Ravelo, Mouton won an easy ten round unanimous decision over Walid Smichet. Smichet is best known for giving undefeated John Duddy worlds of trouble when they squared off back in 2008. Many felt Smichet did more then enough to win the fight, battering and bloodying Duddy for ten action packed rounds. Duddy needed 30 stitches to repair cuts in his face he suffered from the fight, which ultimately ended up costing him a $1.45 million dollar payday against middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik.

BERTO VS URANGO TO BE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED AT NYY STEAK
HOLLYWOOD, FL,– The day before the New York Yankees make their debut in their new home in the Bronx, two of boxing’s heaviest hitters – Andre Berto and Juan Urango - will enter the new Yankee Stadium to announce a May 30th event that is destined to produce more big shots than a home run derby.
A 2004 Olympian for Haiti, Andre Berto (24-0, 19 KOs) is one of boxing’s rising young stars, a status he owes to his incredible talent and crowd-pleasing style. Unbeaten as a pro, Berto parlayed wins over Norberto Bravo, Cosme Rivera, David Estrada, and Michel Trabant into a 2008 title shot against Miguel Angel Rodriguez and Berto made the most of his opportunity, stopping his foe in seven rounds to win the WBC welterweight title. The 25-year old has since defended his title with wins over Steve Forbes and Luis Collazo, and he plans on adding a third defense to his record against Urango.
One of boxing’s hardest punchers, pound for pound, Juan “Iron Twin” Urango (21-1-1, 16 KOs) has struck fear into the hearts of opponents ever since his pro debut in 2002. Since then, he has won the IBF junior welterweight title twice, with his only setback coming via decision to Ricky Hatton in 2007. The Monteria, Colombia native bounced back from that defeat with four straight wins, the most recent coming over Herman Ngoudjo in January in a bout that earned him his second world title. Now he chases after bigger game in the welterweight division.

It’s On! - Philadelphia’s Fight Of The Year - Brawl On Broad Street
Philadelphia’s very own Brian ‘Bionic Bull’ Cohen (9-2) heads up an
awesome 10 fight card when he faces Lafayette, Indiana’s Robbie ‘Taz
Mexican Devil’ Tovar (15-4-1) for the WBC Americas Light Heavyweight title
at the Donna Cohen promoted ‘Brawl On Broad Street’ event at South
Philadelphia High School, Broad & Snyder, Philadelphia on the 9th May.
Cohen, who cuts an imposing figure due to his chiseled bodybuilder style
physique, is odds on favourite to add another championship belt to his
already impressive collection, which includes the USA Mid American, USA
Mid West, NABC, C.A.M. Land Indiana State Light Heavyweight Titles, even
though he failed to capture the WBC USBN title in his previous outing in
January this year.
So why is Cohen such a sure fire bet? One thing for sure is it isn’t
because his opponent a lame duck, anything but, as Tovar has an excellent
pedigree and is a three time local champion at two different weights,
Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight. The answer to this conundrum can
be found elsewhere.
Firstly, Cohen’s January loss to Billy Bailey followed a freak asthma
attack bought on by the 95 degree heat in the arena that day. Promoter,
Donna Cohen, is taking no chances of a repeat scenario on the 9th May by
having an air-conditioned trailer placed adjacent to the arena for Cohen
on the day.
Secondly, and probably more relevant, is that out of the Cohen’s nine
victories to date all but one were by stoppage within three rounds, with
four of those being by way of knockout. Now that’s impressive stats and
surely answers the question.
Supporting Cohen vs.Tovar will be a card packed with local talent
including Super Middleweight Dennis Hassan (8-0), Heavyweight ‘Big’ John
Mercurio (2-0), Cruiserweight Pedro Martinez (3-2), Super Middleweight
Dhafir ‘No Fear’ Smith (20-19-6), Featherweight Paul Fernandez (4-2-1) and
Middleweight ‘Mighty’ Mike Tibberi (7-1)
In addition to the seven male fights there will also be three female
fights, although unfortunately the highly anticipated and heavily
publicized debut at this event of former World Champions, the legendary
Smokin’ Joe Frazier and Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s protégé, British Super
Bantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston will not be one of them due to
the American authorities decision not to grant her a visa in time to take
part.
Instead Donna Cohen has bought in an exciting replacement in the form of
No. 8 ranked Welterweight Olivia Fonseca (2-2-2) in addition to
Lightweight Lonnie Jackson Jr. (1-0) and the professional debut of
Lightweight Liz Sherman.

Aaron Williams heading to Germany for showdown against Cuban champ Hernandez
PROVIDENCE– Cruiserweight prospect “Awesome” Aaron Williams is in Las Vegas, sparring with unbeaten light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson, in preparation for his potential career-changing fight May 9 against former Cuban amateur champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez at Jako-Arena in Bamberg, Bayern, Germany.
Nine-time amateur champion Williams (19-1-1, 13 KOs), born in Cleveland and fighting out of Las Vegas, is trained by former light heavyweight champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, who is also getting Dawson ready for his May 9th rematch against Antonio Tarver.
The 23-year-old Williams is coming off a win by eighth-round knockout of David Williams last November in North Dakota, in which, Aaron was selected as “Fighter of the Night.”
Williams was living up to his nickname, “Awesome,” until he was caught by a punch he didn’t see and stopped last May by Jose Luis Herrera on ESPN. Williams, however, has rebounded nicely with two straight wins and now he’s stepping-up in class to face southpaw Hernandez, who lives and fights out of Germany.
“I’m going over there to win,” Williams said from training camp in Las Vegas. “I have to do what I do best and nothing else matters. Fighting him over there, once the bell rings, everything goes out the window. I know he’s highly rated but I take every fight the same. Sparring with Chad helps a lot because he’s a tall southpaw like Hernandez. I helped Chad get ready for his first title win and now we’re helping each other out.”
Hernandez’ lone loss as a pro was to former world champion Wayne Braithwaite by 12-round technical knockout a year ago. Presently riding a 4-fight win streak, Yoan Pablo is rated in the top 15 of all four major boxing organizations – WBC #9, WBA #12, WBO #13 and IBF #14.
“Aaron is a top prospect and this is the type fight he had to take and must win in order to become a legitimate contender and future world champion,” Williams’ promoter Jimmy Burchfield (Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc.) said. “He’s a pleasure to work with and has a rich amateur pedigree. Training under Eddie and sparring with great fighters out in Las Vegas like Dawson have really helped Aaron develop. Beating a fighter overseas like Hernandez, who is rated high by so many major organizations, certainly should move Aaron right into the top 15 world cruiserweight ratings. He has monster-like power and learns every time out. CES is sending another of its young guns and top prospect to Europe and this fight can help make him a worldwide commodity in boxing.”
