On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary mixed martial arts promoter, matchmaker, and commentator, John Perretti.

In another lengthy interview, we discuss one of the biggest scandals in U.S. mixed martial arts history, the controversy revolving around the Oct. 4 Kimbo Slice-Seth Petruzelli EliteXC fight, and the degree to which the promoters may or may not have tried to protect Kimbo by having Petruzelli avoid taking down Kimbo. We discuss the roles of striking and grappling in the mixed martial arts and their evolution since the early days of the sport. Plus, we discuss John's plans for developing his new combat sport, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman takes on the world, and discusses the world of combat sports, around the world.

Among the many international topics broached in this no holds barred presentation are: the latest news in the case of Swedish Olympic wrestler Ara Abrahamian against those who allegedly denied him the opportunity to wrestle for a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics; the continuing vulgarization of mixed martial arts and particularly the UFC in America; the successful title defense this past Saturday in Argentina by WBO flyweight champion Omar Narvaez; the junior middleweight fight coming up this Saturday, Sept. 25, between Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga; and the Oct. 4 mixed martial arts fight between Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by explaining how, in America, to watch live televised boxing, when there is no live boxing on television, as was the case this past Saturday night. We also discuss how boxing hurts itself by not making more major fights available online. Next, we preview two fights which will be televised live in America this coming week. On Thursday, September 25, WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) tests the waters in the middleweight division by fighting true middleweight Andy Kolle (17-1, 12 KOs). Unbeaten heavyweight Cristobal Arreola (24-0, 21 KOs) hopes to show that he is worthy of a title shot when he faces veteran Israel Garcia (19-1, 11 KOs). Both these fights will take place at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, Calif., and will be shown live in the U.S. on the Versus network. http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-30T10_34_02-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, we focus on discussing the article "Punch Drunk Love. We also discuss the significance of those views of McCain for today.

In addition, we also discuss the EliteXC show on CBS this past Saturday, the monumental drop in ratings from their May 31 show, and other issues including the future of the IFL, MMA coming to New York, and the flawed pay-per-view model for combat sports.

No Holds Barred: Melvina Lathan, Gov. David Paterson, Larry Hazzard, Randy Gordon

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-26T05_51_32-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the appointment of longtime boxing judge Melvina Lathan as head of the New York State Athletic Commission.

We start with a commentary on the significance of this appointment, and what it means for the sports of boxing and mixed martial arts in New York.

At a ceremony held Friday, July 25, at the Police Athletic League in Harlem, New York, officially announcing her appointment, we got comments from Melvina Lathan about her new job, boxing, and MMA. We have the statements both she and New York Governor David Paterson made at this ceremony. We also asked Governor David Paterson about his attitude to MMA coming to New York. And we got the very positive comments of Larry Hazzard, former head of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, and Randy Gordon, former head of the New York State Athletic Commission and now co-host of the show Fight Club on Sirius Satellite Radio, about the appointment of Melvina Lathan, and boxing and MMA.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by criticizing the build-up for this Saturday's important welterweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. In particular, the pay-per-view model, the reliance on nationalism, and the failure to use the Internet properly are singled out. In our interview this week, we speak with the award-winning boxing writer Charles Farrell. In a lengthy and candid discussion, the topics include the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight, the controversy arising from this past Wednesday's rematch between heavyweights James Toney and Hasim Rahman, the major injury suffered by Oscar Diaz in his fight with Delvin Rodriguez this past Wednesday which required emergency brain surgery, and more. No Holds Barred on DojoRadio.com and MediaFire.com‏

No Holds Barred on DojoRadio.com and MediaFire.com Reports are still coming in about No Holds Barred being unable to be played through on Podomatic, and cutting out part of the way through the show. This is a continuing problem there, which is why I am posting the show for download on these other sites, at these addresses: http://nhbnews.dojoradio.com/ http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=25383b37f3d776587069484bded33bcd953b4e4689e56022' DojoRadio is just starting out and actually is not finished yet, but the downloads there work fine, as they do on MediaFire. If you listen through iTunes, use these sites instead, since iTunes just gets the feed from Podomatic. No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro on the Mundials, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Grappling, and Mixed Martial Arts

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-07T04_33_31-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), and a correspondent on our show.

In a lengthy and candid interview, we discuss numerous topics, including the victory by Xande Ribeiro (http://unijj.com/) in the absolutes at the 2008 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, the crossover of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes to MMA, how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the foundation of MMA, how the current overall direction of MMA reflects a bias towards striking over grappling, the opposing values which are predominantly promoted by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, the next Fury Fighting Championship MMA event July 12 in Rio de Janeiro (http://www.furyfight.com), the connection between Fury FC and the Japanese MMA promotion Dream, which member of the Gracie family might become the next big star in MMA, why the Japanese MMA promoters seem more interested in the Gracies than the American promoters, and more.

You can also watch Kid Peligro's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu video interviews on the KidPeligroBJJNews on YouTube (http://youtube.com/user/KidPeligroBJJNews).

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by commenting on this past Saturday's thrilling fight between Kendall Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) and Ricardo Torres (32-2, 28 KOs). After being dropped twice, Holt rallied to knock out Torres in just 61 seconds of the first round to capture the WBO junior welterweight title from Torres. This fight, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, will be replayed Tuesday, July 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on SHO2. Next, the annual meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) took place this past weekend in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The ABC is comprised of the athletic commissions in the U.S. and Canada, including in their tribal communities, and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, attended this meeting. We had a lengthy interview with him about what the ABC is and is not doing to deal with the many controversies which continue to arise in the sport of boxing. No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo,ABC Meeting and MMA

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo,ABC Meeting and MMA On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the discussion we had on the most recent edition of this show with the award-winning boxing writer and author, Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com, about his views on UFC and the mixed martial arts. While we obviously disagreed with most of his views on MMA, we commenton the need to establish the positive social benefits of legalizing and sanctioning MMA. This is not only not done by most of the supporters of MMA, but many of the major MMA promotions actually promote anti-social values and bad sportsmanship. Next, we preview the much-anticipated rematch between WBO junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) and challenger Kendall Holt (23-2, 12 KOs). Their first bout, held Sept. 1, 2007, in Torres's hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, ended with a controversial 11th-round TKO win for Torres. This fight was clearly marred by a wildly unruly crowd, which repeatedly soaked the ring with debris and liquids, even hitting Holt and a cornerman with beer cans. The Torres-Holt rematch takes place this Saturday night, July 5, at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime. It is the most important fight being held this weekend, and should be an energetic, exciting scrap. On a media teleconference call this week, we spoke with both Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt about their first fight and what to expect inthis one. We also got the comments of promoter Bob Arum about thecontinuing controversies in boxing, including the much-discusseddisqualification last week of Humberto Soto in his fight withFrancisco Lorenzo. We next had a lengthy interview with Nick Lembo, counsel for the NewJersey State Athletic Control Board, and a longtime supporter of mixedmartial arts. He is attending the annual meeting of the Association ofBoxing Commissions (ABC), which is going on this weekend in Montreal,Quebec, Canada. MMA is a major topic at this meeting. Among the topics we discussed were: what the ABC is doing to educatevarious commissions about regulating MMA in their jurisdictions, whythe New York legislature did not recently approve the legalization ofthe sport, the need for the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act to beextended to MMA, why MMA promoters should work together like evenboxing promoters often do, UFC contracts, the establishment by the ABCof an official MMA record keeper, federal ID cards for MMA fighters, clarifications of the MMA unified rules, guidelines for amateur MMA,the ABC deciding to make discussion about MMA a regular part of theiragenda along with boxing, and more. Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we review some of the major fights held this past weekend, and preview this coming Saturday's fight between Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz. We begin by particularly focusing upon the long-awaited rematch between IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) and Edison Miranda (30-3, 26 KOs), held at a catch-weight of 166 pounds Saturday, June 21, in Hollywood, Florida, and shown in the U.S. on Showtime. While Abraham won their first bout, held in September 2006 in Germany, by unanimous decision amidst great controversy, this time he left no doubt as to the verdict by knocking down Miranda three times in the fourth round and stopping him for a TKO victory. We also discuss the bout featured on HBO this same night, where 24-year-old Andre Berto (22-0, 19 KOs) picked up the vacant WBC welterweight title, last held by the now-retired Floyd Mayweather Jr., by stopping an overmatched Miguel "Miki" Rodriguez (29-3, 23 KOs) in the seventh round. This coming Saturday, June 28, one of boxing's international icons, Manny Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35 KOs), moves up in weight to lightweight to challenge the WBC titleholder, David Diaz (34-1-1, 178 KOs). This fight will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and shown in the U.S. on HBO pay-per-view. After reviewing the records of both fighters, we hear the responses of both Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz to questions we asked of them on their media conference calls this past week. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the recent exposure of what goes on behind the scenes of UFC's "The Ultimate Fighter" show by cast member and fighter Mike Dolce. Here, once again, the true, anti-social nature of that show is laid bare.

Next, we review the entertaining Gotham Girls Roller Derby bout held this past Saturday, June 7, at Hunter College in New York, where the Bronx Gridlock routed the Brooklyn Bombshells, 126-53. Right after the event, we spoke with Bronx Gridlock members Ginger Snap, who is also president of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, and Beatrix Slaughter, the Gridlock jammer who was named this event's MVP.

This week, from Friday, June 13, through Sunday, June 15, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in men's and women's freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The victors in each weight class go on to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, this August.

We had a chance this past week on a media teleconference call to speak with three of the top-rated wrestlers competing at this event: men's freestyle wrestler Mo Lawal (84 kg/185 lbs.), women's freestyle wrestler Marcie Van Dusen (55 kg/121 lbs.), and Greco-Roman wrestler T.C. No Holds Barred: Tom Atencio on Affliction and Donald Trump, Kid Peligro on Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, Vernon Forrest

No Holds Barred: Tom Atencio on Affliction and Donald Trump, Kid Peligro on Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, Vernon Forrest

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-06-05T18_46_51-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the changed business climate for mixed martial arts following the ratings success of last Saturday’s EliteXC show on CBS.

In light of this, we covered the news conference Thursday in New York, where it was announced that the Affliction mixed martial arts promotion (http://www.afflictionclothing.com/banned/) and real estate mogul Donald Trump had entered into a partnership, with Trump buying an equity stake in Affliction. The inaugural Affliction show takes place Saturday, July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view.

We got a brief comment from Trump about why he chose to invest in Affliction, and spoke with Tom Atencio, vice president of Affliction, about the company's business plans, as well as their intention of creating unified MMA championships by working with the new sanctioning body, WAMMA (http://www.gowamma.com/).

This Saturday night, June 7, WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) will defend his title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs) from "The Contender" series. This fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., and will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with Vernon Forrest Thursday afternoon at a New York news conference about this fight and what to expect in it.

Also this busy weekend, the 2008 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, better known as the Mundials, take place beginning Thursday, June 5, and running through Sunday, June 8, at the Walter Pyramid on the campus of California State University Long Beach in Long Beach, California. This event is organized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (http://ibjjf.org/).

To preview the Mundials, we spoke with our colleague Kid Peligro, a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://adcombat.com/) and a correspondent on our show. In a lengthy discussion, Kid offered his picks for the favorites in the weight classes in the men's and women's black belt divisions, as well as the absolutes. We also discussed the critical role of grappling in the mixed martial arts.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we preview two major title fights taking place this coming Saturday, June 7. On that date, WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) defends his title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs) from "The Contender" series. This fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., and will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Vernon Forrest and Sergio Mora on a media teleconference call this past week about what to expect in this fight. Vernon Forrest also discussed his role as a promoter, and offered a highly critical appraisal of the fighters who have come from "The Contender". Also on June 7, middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (33-0, 29 KOs) of Youngstown, Ohio, will defend his title against mandatory challenger Gary Lockett (30-1, 21 KOs) of Cwbran, Wales. No Holds Barred: Warrior Culture, Country Music and MMA, Pay-Per-View Model, IFL, Ryan Schultz, Dan Miller, Roy Nelson

No Holds Barred: Warrior Culture, Country Music and MMA, Pay-Per-View Model, IFL, Ryan Schultz, Dan Miller, Roy Nelson

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-05-20T20_26_25-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the beating received this past Friday by former Chris Byrd in his ESPN2 bout with Shaun George. Byrd, a former heavyweight champion, was fighting at light heavyweight, and was stopped in the ninth round after looking drained and getting battered throughout the fight.

We next focus on some important correspondence from a listener who understands the connection between the combat sports, the need for a warrior culture by people who are oppressed and downtrodden, and life in general.

Among the other issues discussed are the appearance of EliteXC fighter Kimbo Slice on the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS, the flaws in the pay-per-view model for the combat sports, and what the International Fight League needs to do to improve their fortunes.

Next, we speak with the three IFL fighters who were victorious in their championship fights this past Friday, May 16, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. They are lightweight champion Ryan Schultz, who won a unanimous decision over Deividas Taurosevicius, to retain his belt; Dan Miller, who captured the middleweight belt with a first-round kneebar submission over Ryan McGivern; and Roy Nelson, who retained his heavyweight title with a first-round TKO over Brad Imes.

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by discussing the fragmented title picture in the 140-pound division, which again is hurting whatever credibility boxing has left, and the need for title unification. This past Wednesday, May 14, in New York, Frankie Figueroa (19-2, 13 KOs) successfully defended his regional NABF 140-pound title against Luis Rodriguez (22-2, 13 KOs) with a 12-round unanimous decision. He now wants a shot at a major world title. We spoke with Frankie Figueroa and his trainer, Buddy McGirt, himself a former champion at this weight, right after this fight about it and what lessons can be learned from it. This coming Saturday, May 24, Ricky Hatton (43-1, 31 KOs) fights in his hometown of Manchester, England, against veteran Juan Lazcano (37-4-1, 27 KOs). This fight will be televised live on the Versus network in the United States and on Sky Box Office in the United Kingdom. On a media conference call this past week, we spoke with both Ricky Hatton and Juan Lazcano about this fight and their plans. No Holds Barred: State of MMA, Affliction, IFL

No Holds Barred: State of MMA, Affliction, IFL

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-05-10T09_56_34-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses on several key issues regarding the state of mixed martial arts. Among the many topics discussed are the new Affliction promotion and the numerous challenges they are facing, the troubled pay-per-view model, and the recent announcement of major changes for the International Fight League (IFL).

We also hear comments by IFL CEO Jay Larkin and VP of Fighter Relations Bas Rutten on a media conference call this past week, and discuss with them the need for mixed martial arts promoters to co-promote events.

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by reviewing the expectedly lopsided decision victory by Oscar De La Hoya Saturday night over Steve Forbes, and explains what it was really all about. Almost 25 years ago, on June 16, 1983, one of boxing's most notorious scandals took place. On that date in Madison Square Garden, Luis Resto originally upset previously-unbeaten Billy Collins by unanimous decision. It was soon discovered, however, that the stuffing had been removed from Resto's gloves. The outcome of the fight was changed to a no contest, but Collins had been severely battered during this fight and suffered from blurred vision because of it. Nine months after it, while intoxicated, Collins died in a car crash. Now new information has been revealed that makes this case even more sickening. At a recent New York new conference, Resto has now not only admitted that he knew about the stuffing being taken out of his gloves, but also that his hand wraps had been soaked in plaster of Paris. This meant that these loaded wraps were landing almost directly on Collins's head. Filmmaker Eric Drath is working on a new documentary about the Collins-Resto tragedy, called "Cornered". At this news conference, we spoke with him about these new revelations and his upcoming film. We also spoke with Randy Gordon, former chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, who took office several years after the Collins-Resto fight, about the significance of this, and his subsequent dealings with Resto. Amongst his numerous duties in many areas of MMA, Bas is training Kimbo Slice, AKA Kevin Ferguson, at his gym in Thousand Oaks, Calif., for Kimbo's May 31 fight against James Thompson on the EliteXC card at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This show will be broadcast on CBS, the first live, prime time MMA telecast on a major American broadcast network.

In a lengthy interview, Bas discusses his evaluation of Kimbo as a fighter, where Kimbo stands in only his third professional fight, and what his potential is. He also answers some of the critics of Kimbo. In addition, Bas fills us in on some of his other activities in his increasingly busy schedule.

Plus, we offer a preview of the fight between WBC super lightweight champion Junior Witter (36-1-1, 21 KOs) and top contender Timothy Bradley (21-0, 11 KOs), which takes place this Saturday, May 10, at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England. No Holds Barred: Gary Shaw, EliteXC, Ryan Schultz, Ryan McGivern, Vazquez-Marquez Trilogy, De La Hoya-Forbes

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-05-02T02_32_36-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on what is really behind the Oscar De La Hoya-Steve Forbes fight this Saturday, May 3, and why fight fans should not miss the replay of the Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez trilogy on Showtime, also this Saturday, which were the best boxing matches of the past two years. We also discuss the comments by CBS chairman Sumner Redstone that it was not "socially responsible" for CBS to decide to air the May 31 EliteXC mixed martial arts show on that broadcast network.

On our show, we spoke with Gary Shaw, the president of EliteXC's Live Events division, and president and CEO of Gary Shaw Productions, his boxing promotional company.

In a lengthy discussion, we talked about the mixed martial arts and boxing events in which he is involved. We previewed the EliteXC show coming Saturday, May 31, to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, which will be telecast in the U.S. live on CBS beginning at 9 PM EDT, the first major mixed martial arts show on a major American broadcast network in prime time. We discussed the amazing trilogy between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, which he promoted, and the possibility of a fourth fight; the Kimbo Slice phenomenon and why he is in the EliteXC May 31 main event; the rest of the May 31 card including EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith and the return of Gina Carano; the inclusion on the May 31 undercard of Carlton Haselrig, the only six-time NCAA college wrestling champion and a star lineman with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets; his May 17 boxing card featuring unbeaten rising stars James Kirkland, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Alfredo Angulo, in Primm, Nevada, and on HBO; and the June 7 boxing card featuring Vernon Forrest vs. Sergio Mora and the rematch between Carlos Quintana and Paul Williams, from Mohegan Sun and on Showtime.

We also spoke with IFL lightweight champion Ryan Schultz and IFL middleweight champion Ryan McGivern about their upcoming title defenses Friday, May 16, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. In a dangerous fight, Schultz faces submission specialist Deividas Taurosevicius, while McGivern, in his first title defense, fights the tough Dan Miller.
