New road warrior Gabriel Campillo entering enemy territory with upset victory over Tavoris Cloud in mind

Former WBA 175-pound titlist Gabriel Campillo landed in in Corpus Christi, Texas earlier in the week in advance of the Spaniard's challenge for Tavoris Cloud's (24-0-0, 19ko) IBF championship on Saturday night. The battle will serve as the opening televised bout of the Showtime Championship Boxing broadcast that will also feature Paul Williams (40-2-0, 27ko) taking on Nobuhiro Ishida (24-6-2, 9ko) of Osaka, Japan.

Campillo (21-3-1, 8ko) says he and trainer Pablo Sarmiento had a fantastic camp, working with middleweight champion (and Campillos' manager) Sergio Martinez, who is also in heavy training for his upcoming fight (versus Matthew Macklin).

"Few people are giving me a shot in this fight and that just motivates me more to prove them wrong," said the eager Campillo. "This won't be the first time I've gone to another country and returned home an upset victor," continued the Madrid, Spain, native. Campillo has a point. He won his WBA title from an Argentinian in Argentina (Hugo Hernan Garay), defended it successfully against a Kazakhstani in Kazakhstan (Beibut Shumenov), and in his last fight, an IBF eliminator, fought to a draw with a German-based Iraqi in Germany (Karo Murat).

Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, Campillo's promoter, is with his fighter and recommends the live audience and television viewers that night prepare themselves.

"Gabriel had a fantastic camp and he is fully ready to spring a surprise on Tavoris Cloud on Saturday. He is always at his best when he comes into another fighter's territory and is not expected to win. After the fight, the only ones who are not in shock will be our team.

"We know what's coming."

Fighting out of American Top Team in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the
exciting, colorful, and outspoken "Deuce" will be fighting in the main
event of the M-1 Challenge card on Friday, July 8, at The Hangar in

Both fighters in this main event have claimed that they are much
improved since their first meeting. In this interview, recorded by
phone on Tuesday afternoon, Kenny "Deuce" Garner vowed to end this
rematch victoriously, and again in the first round. He discussed his
subsequent loss to unbeaten M-1 heavyweight champion Guram
Gugenishvili, and why he believes that he will defeat Guram if and

No Holds Barred: Boricua Invasion Boxing Comes to New York, But Not MMA‏

No Holds Barred: Boricua Invasion Boxing Comes to New York, But Not MMA;
http://nhbnews.podomatic.com/entry/2011-06-09T06_55_18-07_00

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with boxers Luis Del Valle and Dat Nguyen, who headline the Boricua Invasion card on Saturday, June 11, and also analyzes the stalling of legislation to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York.

Boricua Invasion I and II take place Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11, both at Roseland Ballroom in New York. Boricua Invasion I will be televised on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, while Boricua Invasion II will be televised on Showtime.

In the main event of Boricua Invasion II, Luis Del Valle (12-0, 10 KOs), originally from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, will face Dat Nguyen (17-1, 6 KOs), originally from Vietnam, in a 10-round featherweight bout. We spoke with both of them at the prefight news conference in New York on Wednesday. We discussed the importance of boxing to Puerto Ricans, their careers and goals, and what to expect Saturday night.
While this innovative pair of boxing cards on successive nights and on two television networks is moving forward, legislation to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York appears less than likely to pass before the legislature adjourns on June 20. We discuss some of the reasons why, including the negative image of gambling casinos and those associated with them in New York and the stubbornness of the near-omnipotent 67-year-old Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and how supporters of MMA must continue this battle.

ABREGU KNOCKS OUT GARCIA IN THRILLER; QUINTERO EARNS UNANIMOUS WIN OVER FERGUSON; DON’T MISS THE REPLAY WEDNESDAY MAY 6, 10 P.M., ON SHOWTIME

SANTA YNEZ, Calif.– Undefeated Carlos Abregu met the canvas twice Friday night before sending Irving Garcia there with just one second remaining in the fourth round for a TKO win in the welterweight main event on ShoBox: The New Generation. It was an action-packed fight that had the Chumash Casino Resort crowd on its feet cheering for more.

Abregu vs Garcia – Irving Garcia surprised everyone, especially Carlos Abregu, with his first-round knockdown Friday night on ShoBox: The New Generation. But it was Abregu who got the win with a technical knockout when referee Jack Reiss called the fight at 2:59 in the fourth round. Abregu vs Garcia – Carlos Abregu recorded the knockout punch with just one second remaining in the fourth round against Irving Garcia. Abregu vs Garcia – Carlos Abregu said after the fight he was surprised by the speed and power of his welterweight opponent, 30-year-old Irving Garcia.

Abregu (27-0, 22 KOs), of Salta, Argentina, overcame two knockdowns in the first and fourth rounds, finally connecting on a straight right followed by a right uppercut sending Garcia (17-4-3, 8 KOs) to the ground before referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight to Garcia’s visible displeasure.

“That was one of the most wildly entertaining fights I’ve seen in years,” SHOWTIME announcer Nick Charles said afterward. “Wow. Some guys would have come unwound after being hit like that. It was all bullets and gun smoke tonight."

Abregu said he “just got caught” in the first round on a right counter by Garcia but came back in the second round with a flurry of combinations that had Garcia off balance the entire round. “I don’t know how I survived that second round,” said Garcia, of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. “I’m very disappointed

Said Abregu, sent to the floor on a left hook by Garcia with 1:27 in the fourth: “I thought my hand was going to hurt I was hitting him so hard in the second round. I knew I had hurt him, but he kept coming. He wouldn’t go down.”

Abregu said he was surprised with the performance of the 30-year-old Garcia. “On the tape I watched of him I didn’t think he would be that fast,” he said.

In an entertaining co-feature lightweight bout, Marvin Quintero (16-1, 12 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, dominated Wes Ferguson (20-4-1, 6 KOs) of Las Vegas, over eight rounds winning on all three scorecards, 78-74, 79-73, 78-74. The evening was presented by Gary Shaw Productions.

Marvin Quintero dominated Wes Ferguson for eight of 10 rounds, winning the lightweight bout Friday night by scores of 78-74, 79-73, 78-74 in the co-feature.

At the end of the second round Ferguson staggered Quintero and then swung big, missing and slipping to the canvas. “I had my opportunities to knock him out but I wanted to prove to people that I could box,” Quintero said. “It was a very tough fight but none of his punches really hurt me. I give myself a nine out of 10. I could have worked harder training for this fight.”

Undefeated super middleweight Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell was in the stands watching his brother Anthony win a super middleweight undercard bout in a first-round knockdown against Alexander Quiroz of Miami, Fla., in just under a minute. Andre was interviewed by SHOWTIME’s Steve Farhood between the telecast’s two fights about his future plans.

Dirrell grew up in the same gym as Ferguson in Flint, Mich. “I’ve known Wes since he was 8 years old,” said Dirrell, who hopes to fight again at the end of June. “I thought he hit the jab perfect tonight. He just didn’t counter. He’s slick enough to be a top prospect. I think he can do it.”

Dirrell last fought on SHOWTIME in March, winning a sixth-round TKO over Derrick Findley to improve to 18-0 with 13 knockouts.

2008 Olympian Gary Russell Jr. fought on the undercard, beating Alvaro Muro (6-14, 5 KOs) of Moreno Valley, Calif., in a four-rounder by decision, 40-35 on all three judges’ scorecards. It was the third straight win to no defeats for Russell, who turned pro in January. Russell was interviewed between fights Friday.

Russell vs Muro – Olympian Gary Russell Jr., won a unanimous decision over Alvaro Muro, 40-35, on all three judges’ scorecards.

“I give myself a B tonight,” Russell said. “I’m glad I fought someone who didn’t just go down right away. He was tough.”

Charles called Friday’s action from ringside with boxing historian Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox was Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

“That was the most exciting fight I’ve seen in my eight years doing ShoBox,” Farhood said after the Abregu fight.

Friday’s ShoBox telecast will re-air on SHOWTIME 2® on Wednesday, May 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The telecast also will be available ON DEMAND from May 4-May 31.

Mixed Martial Arts is up next on SHOWTIME as the network will premiere a new series for the next generation of MMA stars entitled Strikeforce Challengers. The debut of Strikeforce Challengers will take place on Friday, May 15 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. In the main event, unbeaten 155-pound sensation Billy Evangelista (9-0) will face BJ Penn protégé “Iron” Mike Aina (11-6-1). The SHOWTIME telecast will air live beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast) and feature up to five fights.

In a special primetime edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on Saturday, May 16 (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), undefeated and No. 1 ranked 2004 Olympic Gold medalist Andre Ward (18-0, 12 KOs) defends his North American Boxing Organization (NABO) and North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super middleweight titles against Colombian knockout artist Edison Miranda (32-2, 28 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. Also, undefeated John Molina (16-0, 12 KOs) will fight an opponent to be determined and Shawn Estrada (5-0, 5 KOs) takes on Tony Hirsch (8-1-1, 4 KOs) in a four-round super middleweight fight.

MMA resumes on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT) on Saturday, June 6, when Robbie Lawler throws down with Jake Shields in the Strikeforce main event at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. In one of the co-featured fights, Nick Diaz takes on hard-hitting KO artist Scott Smith.

On Saturday, July 11, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) will attempt to become a world champion in a third weight class when he challenges IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (26-1-22 KOs) live on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

See you at the Fights.

BUTE RETAINS TITLE IN CONTROVERSIAL FINAL ROUND; HEARNS TKO’S CLAVETTE IN 6TH; Catch The Replay Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME 2

MONTREAL, Quebec– It was a controversial finish, yet an unquestionable unanimous decision on Friday’s special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME.

Hometown hero, Lucian Bute of Montreal, dominated the No. 1-ranked challenger Librado Andrade of La Habra, Calif., en route to a unanimous decision victory and third successful defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight world title.

However, it was Bute who appeared to be out on his feet at the end of 12 rounds.

Bute used superior hand speed and excellent footwork to easily handle the rough challenger for most of the fight.

Andrade, who had been clearly battered and beaten through 11-plus rounds, took control only as Bute tired late in the final round. Andrade found a home for a few big punches and had Bute stumbling from pillar to post.

With Bute up against the ropes and seemingly out on his feet, Andrade landed another punishing overhand right that sent Bute down for the first time in his career.

Referee Marlon B. Wright gave what many considered a long count, including a break to instruct Andrade to remain in the neutral corner. When Wright resumed the count, Bute was on his feet, leaning against the ropes. Wright had deemed Bute ready to continue, but since the round had ended, it went to the scorecards.

Judges scored the fight 117-109, 115-110 and 115-111 all in favor of Bute.

“We’ve discussed this before,” said ShoBox analyst Steve Farhood during the telecast. “It is very difficult to win a title on the road. We may have seen an overly dramatic example of that tonight.

“This fight was 30 seconds too long for Bute. He totally collapsed… and basically, the referee cost Andrade the title.”

In the post-fight interview with Farhood, Bute said through a translator, “I think he took advantage of me getting tired. He won the 12th round, and maybe one other round, but I won the fight.

“I am not aware of any controversy but, maybe he was leaving the (neutral) corner. That is not for me to judge.”

“He was completely out,” said Andrade in the ring after the fight. “I didn’t come out of the corner. I don’t know what (Wright) was talking about. It was outrageous.”

Andrade falls to 27-2, 22 KOs. At the post fight press conference, he added, “If he gives me a rematch, we’ll take it. But I didn’t come out to win a decision. I promise you if we have a rematch, I am coming for him.

“It doesn’t matter. I had a job to do and I did it. I knocked him out. But whatever happens, we’ll move forward and whoever I fight next, I am coming to fulfill my dream. Whoever it is, I am coming. I am coming like rain.”

“We said he’d have to walk through fire if he was to win this fight in the last few rounds,” said Nick Charles, ShoBox host and play-by-play announcer. “He did. He came through fire, bullets and smoke. What a gutsy performance from Andrade.

“He leaves the loser, incredibly so, and walks off with tremendous grace.”

A near capacity crowd of 16,000-plus rocked the Bell Centre in favor of Quebec’s favorite fighter. A native of Galat, Romania, Bute has lived in Canada since 2003. He improves his record to 23-0, 18 knockouts.

HEARNS vs. CLAVETTE

In the co-feature, “The Chosen One” Ronald Hearns of Detroit, Mich., continued his climb up the 154-pound rankings with an impressive performance over Paul Clavette of New Brunswick, Canada (TKO 6).

Hearns fought effectively on the outside in the opening rounds. In the fifth, he began inflicting damage with a powerful straight right hand. In the sixth, Hearns sent Clavette down twice before forcing the referee to halt the action at 2:37 of the round.

Hearns entered the ring as the No. 11 ranked World Boxing Council (WBC) contender and No. 13 ranked World Boxing Association (WBA). He improves to 20-0, 15 KOs while Clavette drops to 14-2-1, 2 KOs.

The event was promoted by InterBox. Charles called the action from ringside with Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

HOLT TORRES III

Their first two world championship bouts were unforgettable, action-packed and controversial.

Now, World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion Kendall “Rated R’’ Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) will take on Ricardo “Mochuelo’’ Torres (32-2, 28 KOs) in the final chapter of a thrilling trilogy on Saturday, Dec. 13, live on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME 11 p.m. ET/PT.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES SAMUEL PETER vs. VITALI KLITSCHKO, Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Gallagher’s Steak House, New York, New York

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES SAMUEL PETER vs. VITALI KLITSCHKO, at Gallagher’s Steak House, New York, New York

On a night that will electrify the boxing world, active World Boxing Council (WBC) Heavyweight Champion Sam Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) will defend his title against WBC Champion Emeritus Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs), making his dramatic return to the ring after a four-year absence, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, Saturday, October 11.

Immediately following the heavyweight world title fight, which begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT on tape delay, two light heavyweight champions will meet, live on SHOWTIME, when Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver and "Bad" Chad Dawson square off in a long-awaited grudge match.

The Peter-Klitschko showdown will be co-promoted by Duva Boxing, K2 Promotions and Don King Productions from the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany. Tarver vs. Dawson will be promoted by Gary Shaw Productions in association with AT Entertainment and take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada

SAMUEL PETER

“I am very grateful to be here today. I want to clear up one thing. I am the true heavyweight champion.

Vitali, you never beat a champion. You say you are the champion, but you are not a champion. You can’t be the champion until you beat me, and you can’t.

“I have fought 31 fights and never ducked anyone. I fought with my eardrum broken and lost 25 pounds that night, but I still fought.

“I am making one promise today. I will knock Vitali out. Trust me. I will knock out Vitali, and then I will beat his brother (IBF/WBO Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko). There is no doubt about that.”

VITALI KLITSCHKO

“Thank you to everyone who put energy into making this fight happen.”

“I am pleased to say that I am back. I am happy to be back in the ring, happy to fight for my title. I gave away my title freely because of my knee injury.

“I feel sorry for Peter that I must fight him. Skeptical people say that I won’t win because I have been out of the ring for three years, but I did not lose the title. I am honored to fight for (WBC President) José Sulaimán, who gave me this chance.

“I have big respect for Mr. Lou Duva, but his fighters always say they will knock me out and it never happens. Mr. Duva is preparing Peter to knock me out, but this will never happen.

“I don’t underestimate Peter. He is a good puncher. I will give my best to be the winner, to take my title back, and to make history where two brothers will be champions at the same time. It’s a huge motivation for me.

“I promise the fight will not be easy and it won’t go to the scorecards. It will probably end between rounds four-six. I have a lot of presents ready for Peter for October 11.”

DINO DUVA (Peter’s promoter)

“This fight was a fight that a lot of people never thought would happen. When the WBC ordered Sam Peter to fight Vitali Klitschko, I was the most skeptical about Klitschko’s ability. But, a few weeks ago, I ran into Vitali at the Olympics in Beijing. I saw him walk toward me with a fire in his eye and he asked me if the fight was happening. When I told him yes it was, he promised me that he would show up as ready as ever. After seeing him and the fire in him, my doubts were put to rest.

“We are so happy to work with SHOWTIME. SHOWTIME is pound for pound the best network in boxing. We are proud to have this fight on SHOWTIME.”

LOU DUVA (Legendary trainer)

Peter reminds me of Rocky Marciano, and he will definitely knock out Vitali. You’re going to see a fight here, and I’ll tell you what, on October 11, you will see Peter knockout Klitschko.”

BERND BOENTE (Klitschko’s Manager)

“This will be a great fight between two great punchers. I doubt however that this fight goes 12 rounds.”

RICARDO TORRES & KENDALL HOLT, PROMOTER BOB ARUM, Monday, June 30, 2008

Ten months after a wildly controversial ending to their first fight, Ricardo Torres will risk his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight title against No. 1contender Kendall Holt in a rematch on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation this Saturday, July 5, live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Torres (32-1, 28 KOs), who will defend his WBO crown for a third time, rallied to score a hotly debated 11th-round TKO over Holt (23-2, 12 KOs) on Sept. 1, 2007, in the champion’s hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia

In a 10-round junior welterweight co-feature, undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA)/WBO No. 5 140-pound contender Lamont Peterson (24-0, 11 KOs) will put his undefeated record on the line against former International Boxing Association (IBA) champion Rogelio Castaneda.

Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc., will promote the doubleheader from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

Question:Bob, Ricardo and Kendall, can you provide some closing comments?

Arum:We're very pleased that we're able to present this event on SHOWTIME because the fight which took place a number of months ago was considered to be very controversial. When things are controversial in boxing, very often lawsuits start.

All of this is going to be settled in the ring at the beautiful new Planet Hollywood hotel in Las Vegas. We're pleased that the fights will be held at the beautiful Planet Hollywood hotel and that SHOWTIME is televising the event for the entire country.

SHOWTIME has made great strides, not only in boxing, but in original programming. The number of new subscribers to SHOWTIME is growing by leaps and bounds. This is just another example of SHOWTIME putting on a very competitive match. The champion, Ricardo Torres, is one of the hardest punchers in boxing today. The challenger, Kendall Holt, is an extremely poised and experienced fighter who wants to add the title champion before his name.

Question:Ricardo, what are your thoughts about fighting Holt again, and what do you remember about the first controversial fight?

Torres:I don't remember the first fight being controversial at all. I beat Holt fair and square, and I moved on. Now, this is the next fight and I believe it should be even better. We know each other better. We should be able to know what each other can do. That's what gives me the confidence that I have.

I'm very well prepared for this rematch.

Question:Kendall, what are your thoughts on fighting Torres again? What do you remember most about the first fight?

Holt:I just remember me not doing enough. I just remember me not being active enough. I believe I was winning the fight. I believe the fight was stopped early. I believe that in this rematch I prepared myself better than I did before. I believe I'm going to be a lot more active in this fight, and I believe this time I'll walk away with a WBO championship.

Question:Were you prepared for all the conditions you faced in the ring in the first fight?

Holt:Actually, I was prepared. I didn't think anything controversial was going to happen. I was just prepared to face Torres. I didn't prepare to face the hostile crowd. I didn't prepare to face a referee who was making a lot of mistakes. I was just prepared to face Torres.

Question:Are you going to press the pace a little bit more in the rematch, or are you going to get the same Torres in the ring?

Holt:At times I will pick up action, I will go forward. I'm a sleek counter puncher, so I will follow the game plan, which is to box. I will press the action when I feel it's time.

Question:Ricardo, what made it important for you to accept this rematch beyond money? What made you accept this rematch when you did not have to after the WBO rule against making an immediate rematch?

Torres:As far as I'm concerned, I'm a champion. I'm out here to face the best fighters out there. They say Holt is that right now. I accept that. I'll fight Holt and move on, and I'll fight even bigger and better fights.

The opportunity was brought up to fight Holt again. I have no problem with that. If that's what needs to be done right now, that's what needs to be done.

Question:Did all the controversy motivate you to take the fight to kind of prove that you were the better fighter in the rematch?

Torres:I never felt like that. I know the first fight was controversial. I know that Holt didn't get hit with anything. The only thing he got hit with was my punches. That's why he went down. As far as I'm concerned, obviously the WBO, it was a fair win. But like I said, I'm willing to fight whoever is out there when the opportunity is here and we'll do it again.

Question:Can you talk about coming to the United States for the rematch, and what made you accept the fight in the U.S.?

Torres:I'm very confident. I have an open mind. I came to do my job. Hopefully, they'll do their job, everybody will see a great fight and everybody will be happy. As far as I'm concerned, I'm very confident about what I'm able to do in the ring.

Question:Have you watched the first fight against Holt?

Torres:I have seen the first fight a few times, and obviously we knew what was happening that night. We knew we were down on points. We knew we had to pick it up. I was down in the sixth round. I got up, and knew I had to do something special. I knew I had to take Holt out, and I did. I took him out in the 11th. The referee did the right thing by stopping it. He was hurt.

Question:Bob, what is your opinion of the stoppage in the first Torres-Holt fight?

Arum:You remember I'm watching it from a tape after the event. I thought the referee stoppage was justified. I thought that Holt was really hurt. It was very, very difficult for me to see on that tape what the fans were carrying on in the arena. I did see stuff being thrown, but you couldn't get the impact unless you were there.

So, it's very, very hard for me to say. But I think the stoppage was justified.

Question:Why do you think Torres eventually took the rematch?

Arum:Torres has a lot of pride. Money, as you say, was a factor. When we (Top Rank) got into the picture, we figured that the way to solve it was to get everybody together, pay everybody, and put the fight on in Las Vegas or in Connecticut.

In boxing, disputes should be settled in the ring. I think it certainly was a terrific fight last time. SHOWTIME viewers and the people coming to watch the fight here in Las Vegas want to see a tremendously competitive and interesting fight.

It will be even better this time. Tickets are priced very, very reasonably. They're $50, $100 and $150. Every seat's a good seat. So, we'll have 4,000 or 5,000 people there on Saturday. It's great for boxing and great for SHOWTIME. It's great for Planet Hollywood and great for the fighters.

Question:Do you know who the referee is going to be for the rematch?

Lee Samuels: The referee is Jay Nady. The judges are Duane Ford, Robert Hoyle and

Bert Clements. Everyone is from Nevada.

Question:Kendall, if you stay after it this time, do you open yourself up somewhere else in your fight plan?

Holt:I'm going to try not to. But, when you go forward and press the action, at times you will leave yourself open. So, that's a risk I'm going to have to take. I'm going to take that chance. I'm going to be smart about it. I'm not going to go out there and lose my head. But, I will take chances in the fight.

Question:How do you feel going into this fight? Do you worry about getting gassed if you go too hard early on?

Holt:I'm a professional fighter. I'm trained to go 12 hard rounds. But I've prepared very well. I've changed some things about myself, and I broke down some mental barriers that were hindering me a little bit in the fight game.

So, hopefully in this fight, all that will shine through.

Question:What did you learn about Torres from the first meeting?

Holt:What I learned about Torres is that I underestimated him the first time. I was a firm believer that he didn't earn his chance to be a world champion. He shouldn't have had a chance to fight Miguel Cotto. After the fight, I realized I didn't think he earned his chance. He shouldn't have been in the fight for the championship. He shouldn't have won the championship, but now I understand that he's here. So, I have to deal with him being here.

Question:Will you be able to put all the emotions of the first fight behind you on fight night and just focus on the battle at hand?

Holt:I'm sure I will be able to put the emotions behind me, but, at times, they might come back into play during the fight. So, I'm not absolutely sure that they won't. But I'm a professional, so I should be able to prepare.

Question:When your hand is raised this time around, will it be sweeter because of all that's taken place previously?

Holt:It will be sweeter because all the controversy has actually made me a bigger star. It made me a more recognizable name. Hopefully, winning this fight will make me a more recognizable face.

Question:Is bringing the title back home to New Jersey important to you?

Holt:It's extremely important to bring the title back home because Arturo Gatti was the last champion from New Jersey. Before him, it was a lot of years that New Jersey didn't have a champion. So, it is extremely important that I bring the title back to New Jersey, especially after the New York Giants just won the Super Bowl.

Question:How do you avoid some of the problems from the first fight in the rematch?

Holt:Well, the biggest controversy was that the stoppage was premature. If we have premature stoppages like that, then there will be no such thing as the Arturo Gatti wars and fights like that. Even if a guy is stunned or hurt, it doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to fight because some of the best fights we've in boxing history were fought when guys were hurt.

You stop a fight when a guy can't defend himself anymore, not because he's hurt. How I'm going to stop the controversy is by limiting myself being wide open, by making mental errors and dropping my hands. I know I'm going to get hit with those big punches, and I should treat it as if I’m in there fighting every single second of the fight.

Question:How many times have you watched the tape of that first fight to come up with these kinds of lessons?

Holt:I have watched the first fight two or three times. Each time I've watched it, I've just watched it more. I've never one time sat and watched it in its entirety. The main thing was that I wasn't active enough. The second thing was that when I was active, Torres caught me with a good punch and I was on the ropes, and my hand was slightly down a little bit.

But, other than that, the fight was fought to near perfection on my behalf.

Question:Ricardo, can you comment on the controversy in the fight and also your view on the time of the stoppage?

Torres:I was hitting Holt with a lot of punches at the end of the fight. I was just after him. He was throwing maybe a couple of slap punches at me. But, the referee did the right thing. His job is to protect the fighters at all times, and I think he was doing that.

Question:Based on what happened in the first fight, what do you expect to do differently in the rematch now that you've seen each other already?

Torres:As far as I'm concerned, we did make some mistakes in that fight. We had never seen Holt before. Now, we have a lot rounds facing each other. That will be the difference because I know him better. I know what I can do against Holt, and I will be prepared to go the 12 rounds.

Question:Do you think that Holt's going to do anything differently against you?

Torres:I always expect different things from fights. Fights are always different. We know each other very well. I don't think Holt can change that much. But, I'm sure he'll try to do some things differently.

Question:What do you think about Holt saying that any place is better to fight the rematch than Barranquilla, Colombia?

Torres:Holt should be grateful for the way he was treated in Barranquilla. He was treated as a very nice guest. He got everything he needed and needed while he was there. He got treated better than I do in my own country.

In the ring, there are just two of us. It doesn't matter where we fight. It's just going to be me and him.

Question:What's your opinion about being the betting underdog in this fight?

Torres:The guy that made the odds is not getting in the ring. The people that are betting on the fight are not getting in the ring. I'm going to prove everybody wrong. I'm prepared mentally and physically for this fight. There's nothing written about it here. There are no favorites. There's nothing. We still have to fight.

Question:Is this personal for you at all?

Torres:As far as I'm concerned, boxing is still a sport. I love to compete against the best. Competition is what makes this great. I come in here to fight the best and to do the best that I can. I don't want anybody getting hurt or getting injured.

I just want to put on a great performance. I hope my opponent does the same thing, and we both move on and get on to bigger fights and other performances down the road.

Question:Kendall, can you address the fact that you are the favorite in the rematch after losing the first fight against Torres?

Holt:Being a favorite doesn't really do anything for me or my confidence. It really doesn't bother me. Like Torres said, the people making the odds don't have to fight. They don't have to train. They don't have to work hard. They don't have to do anything but guess who they think should win or who they think might win.

I appreciate that the odds makers think I'm going to win. At the end of the day, we still have to get in there and fight.

Question:What do you think of Torres saying that he thought the conclusion to the first fight was controversy‑free?

Holt:If I were in Torres’ shoes, I would have said the same thing. But you can't deny what happened. It happened. What happened was unfortunate. But the biggest controversy was that the fight shouldn't have been stopped.

If the fight was stopped, it should have been stopped to clean the debris out of the ring. But, to be stopped and to declare Torres the winner was preposterous you don’t stop the fight just because a fighter is hurt. If that's the case, we wouldn't have the Arturo Gatti fight, the Micky Wards, the people that come back to win the fight in the last second of the last round.

If those fights were stopped when a guy was hurt for the first time, we wouldn't have those wars. You stop the fight when the fighter is unable to defend himself. You stop it when he's unable to continue to go on.

I was willing and able to continue. Was I hurt? No. Was I unable to defend myself? No. Was my head snapping back? No. Was I wobbly? No. So, the fight was prematurely stopped.

Question:Bob, what kind of crowd are you expecting for the fight?

Arum:The venue can be made to hold 6,000. We expect between 4,000 and 5,000. They do a marvelous job promoting at Planet Hollywood. They put everything into it. It's been a pleasure for us to work with them. There's a love there for boxing with Robert Earl and Mike Mecca. They haven't become jaded like some of the places that put on a lot of these big fights.

They're very enthusiastic, and it's been a pleasure for all of us at Top Rank to work with them. I know the fighters are really thrilled with the treatment they've received at Planet Hollywood.

Question:Kendall, what happened in the first Torres fight, and what transpired in the ring? How long did it take for you to get over it and to lose a fight for the reasons that you just said?

Holt:The first Torres fight did not linger. I got over it after the appeals were denied. When the new ranking came out, I moved down only one notch lower than I was before. So, I was the No. 2 contender in the world. My thinking was that I will have two good fights and I will be right back to being a mandatory challenger. So, at that point, I wasn't worried about it anymore. I wasn't worried about fighting for the rematch.

I just knew the rematch would happen. It was just a matter of time.

Question:Once that fight ended and you were in the dressing room, what was your mind set?

Holt:I cried. That fight shouldn't have been stopped. I was stunned. I wasn't unable to defend myself. I could have gone on. I was just completely stunned. Up until the sixth round when I was struck in the face with a beer can, Torres was laid out on the ground recovering, so he didn't see it. But there are still shots of me being hit in the face with a can.

From that moment on, I was not there mentally. I was just concerned about me, my entourage, my trainers and everyone from America making it out of there if I did go after Torres and knock him out. Up until that point, I had only seen one security guard.

So, all of that went through my mind.

Question:Bob, have you ever been involved in a fight that one of the participants got nailed with some kind of object thrown in a ring from a fan?

Arum:Read George Kimball's great book that's coming out called “Four Kings.” When Marvin Hagler won the world title in England against Minter, I have never seen so many cans rain on a ring. It was like a rainstorm of beer cans. I didn't know there were that many cans in all of England. So, yeah, I've seen it.

Question:That was after the fight, though, right?

Arum:It was pretty scary.

Question:Even though we know there's a lot of subjectivity in boxing, what do you think should be done to prevent such craziness from continuing to go on all the time?

Arum:I don't know if it's all the time. You take whatever steps you can to prevent controversies from happening. Mistakes will happen.

There are egregious calls in baseball and football, even with instant replay. In any athletic endeavor, there will be mistakes made, controversies and calls. You try to eliminate them to the extent possible. But I'm not aware that they're occurring at any greater number than at times past.

When you have a controversy like what happened in Barranquilla, the way you handle it is everybody works together to do a rematch so the playing field is leveled.

Question:Kendall, in your first bout against Torres, were you hurt by fatigue or his punches?

Holt:Torres caught me with a good shot in the fourth round and a good shot in the 11th round. Other than that, I was fine.

Question:Ricardo, will you change your approach in this fight considering you gave Holt a demanding lead early in the fight by fighting too passively?

Torres:Without a doubt, I know him better. I know what to expect. I think you'll see me more sure of what I'm trying to do and with the things I need to do. I come more prepared. We're going to go 12 hard rounds, and I know what I need to do. My mentality is there. I'm physically fit. I'm ready to go.

Question:Bob, Ricardo and Kendall, can you provide some closing comments?

Arum:It's going to be a terrific fight, and a great night of boxing. The fights start at 5 p.m. at the arena. SHOWTIME telecast goes on at 8 p.m. pacific time, and it will be delayed on the west coast.

If you really love the sport of boxing and want to see another great fight, this is the fight that you'll enjoy. It will make your July fourth weekend complete.

Torres:I want to invite everybody to come out and see the fight. It will be a great fight, and even better than the first one.

Holt:I'd like to thank Bob Arum for helping to secure a rematch. I would like to thank Ricardo Torres for being a stand‑up person and a stand‑up champion for granting me the rematch.

SHOWTIME Will Re-air Their Memorable First Fight For The First Time On U.S., Television June 16, 19 on SHO2 and June 21 on SHOWTIME

NEW YORK– Their first fight played out like a Hollywood script: rife with drama, incredible two-way exchanges, a broken jaw, multiple head butts, low blows and controversy.

On Saturday, June 21, undefeated middleweight champion Arthur Abraham, and the explosive, hard-hitting Edison Miranda will co-star in the emotionally charged sequel, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). Abraham won the first fight on a hotly disputed unanimous decision in a scintillating affair on September 23, 2006. The 12-round rematch will be contested at a catch weight of 166 pounds.

In the SHOWTIME co-feature, undefeated middleweight Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0, 18 KOs) of New York, by way of Dominican Republic, will face Raul Marquez (41-3, 29 KOs) of Houston, Texas, by way of Mexico, in an IBF World Championship eliminator. The two-fight telecast will originate from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and is promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing and Sauerland Event in association with The Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Setting the stage for the most anticipated rematch since Marquez-Vazquez II, SHOWTIME will re-air Abraham-Miranda I for the first time on U.S. television this Monday, June 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME 2™, again on Thursday, June 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO2 and on Saturday, June 21, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®.

Miranda (30-2, 26 KOs), long known as one of the most feared punchers in boxing, delivered considerable punishment in the first fight. Miranda broke Abraham’s jaw with vicious shots to the head early in the bout and blood flowed steadily from Abraham’s mouth until the final bell.

Miranda, fighting on Abraham’s home turf in Germany, lost five points for low blows and head-butts. Abraham, (26-0, 21 KOs) the current IBF middleweight champion, survived the brutal injury to win a decision by five, six and seven points respectively on the judges scorecards to retain his title.

“In all my life as a boxing fan, and as a producer for more than 20 years, I have never seen anything like it,” said David Dinkins Jr., executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports telecasts, of Abraham’s broken jaw. “For a guy to fight through that kind of injury—and win—is truly remarkable. There’s some unfinished business here. I am really looking forward to seeing them go at it again.”

Fans should look for the same kind of thrilling action on June 21.

“Miranda doesn’t have to fear me in the ring, but he sure better respect my skills,” Abraham said. “I’m going to fight my fight and if he wishes to stand in the ring with me, he better respect my talents.”

“I’m training twice a day,” continued Abraham. “My sparring partners have been excellent. This is the right rematch at the right time.”

Miranda has since moved up to super middleweight where he is much more comfortable and looked dominant in his last two fights.

“The adjustment from middleweight to super middleweight hasn’t been tough at all,” Miranda said. “I feel great at this weight. My punching power didn’t decrease as many thought it would. I fight with a lot more energy at this weight.”

The undefeated Abraham has dominated the middleweight division since he won the vacant IBF belt with a fifth round knockout over Kingsley Ikeke on Dec. 10, 2005. He has made seven successful defenses, four coming by way of knockout.

Nicknamed “King Arthur,” Abraham has brutal power having knocked out more than 80 percent of his opponents.

One of boxing’s most devastating punchers, Miranda is no stranger to world title belts and eliminators. Miranda’s only other loss came against current WBC and WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in a WBC eliminator on May 18, 2007.

After the loss to Pavlik, Mirada moved up to super middleweight. On Oct. 30, 2007, he defeated Henry Porras with a fifth-round TKO and in his last fight he demolished David Banks on Jan. 11, 2008 with a brutal third-round knockout.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Steve Albert and Al Bernstein will call the action from ringside with Jim Gray reporting from ringside. The telecast will be produced by Chuck McKean with Bob Dunphy directing. Dinkins is the executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports.

Showtime Fighters Wear Lakers, Celtics Jerseys at N.Y. Press Conf.‏

Sergio Mora (left) of Los Angeles and Vernon Forrest (right) of Atlanta, make their pro basketball allegiances known Thursday during a press conference at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City. Forrest (donning the No. 24 Lakers away jersey) will defend his WBC super welterweight world title against Mora (sporting the No. 5 Celtics home jersey) this Saturday live at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.

For the record, both fighters predict that the series will “go the distance” and end in seven games. Mora likes his hometown team, the Lakers, while Forrest, believes that the Celtics will take home pro basketball’s ultimate trophy.

“The Celtics have more star players and a better bench,” Forrest said.

“Both teams have a tradition of greatness and rivalry,” Mora said. “However, the Lakers have youth, a hot bench and are destined to win.”

(From left) Carlos Quintana, Sergio Mora, Vernon Forrest and Paul Williams pose during a press conference Thursday at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City. To kick off the world championship doubleheader this Saturday on SHOWTIME, Quintana will attempt to retain his WBO welterweight belt against Williams, the boxer he dethroned in February.

GARY SHAW, EliteXC Live Events President

“I want to thank everybody for being here. Saturday, at 9 p.m., on CBS is going to be a tremendous, historic night for mixed martial arts and EliteXC is proud to present it to the millions and millions watching on television and live in attendance. No one is going to be disappointed. CBS, its announcers, the production team, all of us at ProElite and EliteXC, the fight team, could not be happier or more excited.

A special thanks to Ken Hershman (Senior Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports Programming, Matt Blanc (Chief Executive Officer, SHOWTIME) and SHOWTIME – without them, none of this would have been possible.

I also want to thank the press for the outstanding job they have done for this mega event. We are on the front pages of sports sections. The turnout here is outstanding. So, thanks to all of you.

I would have our fighters fight with another organization. I have said all along, the UFC is a fine organization. They are nice people. They put on some of the finest fights in the world, but it is not the only organization that has fine fighters or fights.

We will hopefully announce the next CBS fight on Saturday. There are two parts of it – it is CBS programming making sure it doesn’t conflict with any other commitments and it is us getting the right venue. Those are the two things we are working on right now. I can tell you it will be late summer to very early fall. (But) Pray for us for Saturday first.

Ticket sales are at about 7,000 right now. We are happy about it. In-arena ticket sales may be hurt because of the area and because it is going to be on primetime television. I think we have done such a spectacular job talking about CBS that it is almost like people want to stay home and watch it on CBS and have a party.

Roughly 96 percent of the CBS affiliates are showing the fight card. Every major market is showing the fight.

It won’t be much different of a format. For us, we have been on SHOWTIME which is a network that is advertising free. We will roll out the show in the same manner, but will have commercial breaks. The in-arena atmosphere will be high energy and entertaining. Commercials will be the only difference. We are not going to cut away right before a knock out.’’

DOUG DELUCA, Executive Chairman, ProElite, Inc.

“First of all, I want to thank my wife and my baby in the first row. Without them, I wouldn’t be on this wild ride with Gary and Kelly (Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President, CBS Primetime). Thank you to all the press. I am an entertainment guy myself, so to see all of the support for this sport in its shining moment is an amazing thing. This is being broadcast in many other countries. We are in for one hell of a night. You know in a business when the team is gelling. Everybody is working like a team.

Gary said most of the thank yous, but I want to say a big thank you to our partners, SHOWTIME and, now, CBS, who have thrown all the guns at this. You see the press this is getting. You see the promos surrounding the event. They (both) promised they would be a true partner and they have been a true partner. Everyone is really in for a treat. It is really going to be a special event. I am as excited as Gary. This is a first-class announce team. This team is excited. They are working overtime on their own. They know they sport. They are meeting with the athletes.

I always say when I talk about broadcasting how the NFL taught viewers how to watch football. We are going to help the viewers who not-yet fans of MMA, tell them about MMA and draw them in. Anyone who gives it a chance will fall in love with the sport and be compelled by it.

The huge thanks is to our fighters. They put so much pressure on themselves each time they compete. The pressure that this event has added to these guys, I don’t envy. They are all doing it with smiles. My hat is off to you guys. A heartfelt thanks for a great event. Win, lose or draw, you are all champs.

The ProElite team has been working hard for over a year. We promised that it would come together and it will come together on Saturday night. I hope to see all of your there and thank you from the bottom of my heart.’’

EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw speaks at a jam-packed dais during the final press conference for "CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS'' Thursday at Spotlight Live in downtown Manhattan, N.Y. The history-making, first-ever mixed martial arts event in primetime on network television will be shown this Saturday, May 31, on the CBS Television Network (9 p.m.-11 p.m. ET/PT).

GARY SHAW ON KIMBO

"The first time I introduced Kimbo, I was introducing him as a YouTube sensation with over 10 million hits. I knew he was a star then. I knew he could be a superstar. There are great basketball players, but nothing like Michael Jordan. There are great golfers, but nothing like Tiger Woods. Every once in a while there is someone who crosses over that line to a superstar. You just know. When Mike Tyson walked in, the place erupted. When someone else walked in there were only a few claps. Well, Kimbo Slice is a superstar. He is probably the most recognizable name in all of MMA. On May 31, when he gets in the cage, he will be the single most known face of MMA.

(UFC’s) Dana White will be at home watching us on CBS. When he rips Kimbo Slice, it only proves he is an idiot. When he says that BJ Penn is the best fighter in the whole family and can knock out Kimbo Slice, the DEA should raid his home. I know BJ Penn would never say that and is probably embarrassed. Although BJ Penn is the best fighter in the family, he’s not the smartest Penn (JD, his brother, is an executive at EliteXC).

If you want to do something good for the sport, you should support CBS. Whether Kimbo has two fights, or six, he is raising the tide of MMA. All ships rise with the tide. The fighters on this card have said it. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. He trains with Bas Rutten. If you train with him, you are a real fighter. Randy (Khatami), the whole camp you see, are not paid by Kimbo. They are a family. He is first class. He is the closest thing I know to Tyson. He has an off and off switch. When he is off, you would have him baby sit your kids without a second thought. When it is on, someone is in trouble for sure.

Kimbo has a complex side to him as well. He is intelligent. He is well-read, well-versed. He is street through and through. He has not forgotten where he came from. On the bus ride over here, he told me he bought two 26-inch TVs and is going to give them to someone needy in the work area in Newark. He wants to leave Newark with a positive impression. It not only says something about Kimbo but the MMA family. I am telling you, Kimbo Slice is real.

We are up for the challenge in a cage. When this is over, you will be proud that Kimbo has represented MMA. You will be proud he is a family man and has taken care of his kids. You will find when the story is over that Kimbo rose to the occasion as a standup guy. He is our franchise player right now. The guys that has helped us more than he knows. I have called upon him more than any other athlete."

KIMBO

“I don’t have much to say. I was to thank CBS and EliteXC. CBS rules.

I don’t feel like all the pressure is on me to perform a certain way. Not at all.

I don’t underestimate any fighter. Just because he has lost a couple fights, doesn’t mean he isn’t going to come out strong.’’

“JAMES THOMPSON

“It is a wonderful opportunity for me. I have come in nice and quiet and I am looking forward to it. It has been a long time coming to get on CBS. I am very lucky and I look forward to making the most of it.’’

“RUTHLESS’’ ROBBIE LAWLER

“I don’t have much to say. I’m ready to fight. It is nice to be on CBS. I am going to put on a show.’’

SCOTT “HANDS OF STEEL’’ SMITH

"I have to thank my family and friends. They have followed me from Vegas to Miami to Ireland and now to New Jersey. They support and believe in me. They know what I am capable of and now it is time to show the fans that tune into CBS. This fight is a dream fight for me. Robbie is an exciting fighter and a great champion, but I believe that I can be a champion. These guys are awesome. Once again, this is a fight I would buy on pay-per-view to watch. It is great that everyone will be able to see it. Thanks to CBS for allowing me to be a part of it.’’

GINA CARANO

“I would like to thank my fans, all the people that have supported me and God. I think Kaitlin is a great opponent for me. (We’re going to) blow the (heck) of our women’s MMA. I appreciate everyone’s support and I hope the fight goes well. I’m ready. Let’s do it.

It depends on the day if I feel pressure. Sometimes I feel pressure. Sometime it depends on the hour. Sometimes I say ‘forget about the pressure.’ I am just another human being that is living and doing the best I can. I am doing surprisingly well today. I am looking forward to the fight. I want to get this fight over and jump into the gym and train for the next one.

I think Kaitlin is going to be one of my tougher matchups. I think this is going to be a very big test of what I am capable of doing. I hope it comes out good. You can only hope for the best.’’

KAITLIN YOUNG

"I want to thank EliteXC, CBS and ProElite. I think it will be a great fight. We bring out the best in each other. I think that women’s MMA has been overlooked in other leagues until EliteXC came around. I am really excited and honored. I have trained harder for this fight than I ever have. I’m excited to put on a good fight for you on Saturday night."

JOEY VILLASENOR

"I want to say what an honor it is for a veteran like me to fight on such a big card. We are making history, not only for MMA and EliteXC, but for my family. From that night on, my family lives forever. That gives me nothing but great pride. They are going to have a chance to see all of us fighters. Everyone is going to have a chance to see us, family men and real people. It is a chance to get new fans out there. I can’t wait to perform on Saturday. I feel like I am at my best. What an honor.’’

PHIL BARONI

“I am just a fighter. I am here to fight. Once I step in the cage, I am just here to fight no matter how many TV’s are on it.

“I am ready to stomp this guy. He knows it and I know it.’’

JON MURPHY

“I just want to thank Gary and EliteXC, ProElite and CBS. I have been doing this for five years or so and I am glad to be a part of it. We had always hoped that it would get to this level. It is going to gain a lot of fans. I am looking forward to Saturday’s fight.

I am excited to have the first fight. It is a good way to set the tone. When Brett and I go out there and have a great fight, we will set the tone for the evening.

Being on network TV is a huge step for all that is happening in MMA. It is going to be showing to the widest audience possible. It is obviously going to pick up more fans. It is perfect for me.

Brett’s a big, strong guy. He fights hard. He is a pretty athletic guy from what I have seen. I think our styles match up perfectly and it is going to be a great fight. Of course, I am going to win. I don’t predict, I just go and fight. This is the best shape I have been in, so I am ready to rock.

I donated 15 inches of my hair to “Locks of Love” back on Jan. 1. That is pretty much why I grew it in the first place – two and a half years worth.’’

BRETT ROGERS

I would like to thank EliteXC for allowing me to be a part of this. This is real big thing to be on CBS. I have been fighting for five or six years. I never thought I’d be here today. I’d like to thank my family, friends and sponsors. We are the first show and I know it will be exciting.

It means a lot to be the first fight on such a big night. I’m thankful that EliteXC is even allowing me a chance. I am respectful for that. But I’ve been working hard and deserve this. I am definitely going to take my time and win each fight.

I predict our fight is going to be stand and bang unless he decides he wants to take me to the ground. If he wants to hold me, I might play into his game, but I say I win by KO.

It’s funny. Every time Kimbo has fought, I’ve been on the same fight card. I have my views on it, but it is good because everyone wants to see the show. He is the highlight right now. At least people can see me too and I can catch the eyes of the fans. Once I get to his level, there will be no surprises. Everyone will know what I am capable of doing and they will love what they see.’’

GUS JOHNSON, Play-By-Play Announcer

“I’d like to say it’s an honor to work with these artists from the world of mixed martial arts. They are truly real, live warriors. I think we all can learn a lot from their passion, commitment and dedication. This is a sport that has to be given the proper credit for shows like this. These great artists will start to gain recognition nationally and internationally with this broadcast on CBS.

I have had an opportunity to call a lot of major national events with the National Football League on CBS, the NCAA Tournament and I am the voice of the Knicks. I have had a chance to call boxing at Madison Square Garden at a very high level. I have had the opportunity to train as a boxer, to study as a kung fu artist, and most recently to take up jiu-jitsu.

This sport is the sport of the future. It takes a very intelligent person to be able to fight in so many different ways whether that be standing or a jiu-jitsu man using guillotines. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved. I love this sport and it is a rising sport for kids of all ages, especially that 15-22 demographic. I believe there are jiu-jitsu academies and martial art studios popping up all over the county because of it. I really believe mixed martial arts and, hopefully EliteXC, will lead the way to a whole new era in American sports.’’

FRANK SHAMROCK, Analyst

"I certainly know what it feels like to throw some kicks and punches. I’ve done all that stuff. I am honored to be the commentator for this momentous event. Mixed martial arts is a lifestyle. It’s an art form. It is a mini-movement in the USA and around the world. For some reason right now, making a living through fighting and having a purpose for that and representing your family, your community, yourself in a professional fashion has just become fashionable and I appreciate that. I have been that guy for some time. I plan to call it like I see it. I plan to put my special flavor on it, which is to tell the truth. I am proud to be part of such an amazing movement at such an amazing time. Hopefully, I have some good years left in me. It is an honor to be here. Thank you for this.’’

MAURO RANALLO, Analyst

"I want to thank ProElite and everyone involved. I want to thank SHOWTIME and of course the people at CBS for having the foresight to bring the greatest sport to the forefront. I am deeply honored and thrilled to be a part of this landmark event. I have been a fan of Gus Johnson for many years. I think we have the same passion and intensity. I know he is going to be tremendous for this sport. Of course, Frank Shamrock is a pioneer in the sports of MMA, an entertainer and definitely one of the most educated people when it comes to articulating our sport. I think it is up to me and the other commentators to tell the story of all of these tremendous athletes up here. They are all intelligent, all educated, all of them champions in there specialty whether it is judo, boxing. It is a dawn of a new era in mixed martial arts. I had the opportunity to commentate in Japan where there were 35,000-40,000 people in the stands and they were front page the next day. It is about time that MMA is front page news for the right reasons here. We are all going to entertain and educate. These fighters are going to put on one hell of a show. Enjoy the show. Thank you very much."

KARYN BRYANT, Reporter

“Thank you, Gary and Ken. I was so glad someone came and asked me to do this. This is going to be amazing. I have been a fan of this sport for several years. This is the wave of the future. This is the sport of right now. We already get along great, the announce team. I think the enthusiasm, passion and love we have for this sport will really show. I am really glad to see Gina and Kaitlyn here. I’m glad there are women on the card. It is really a thrill to see that and introduce people to the sport. ‘We’ love fighting just as much as the guys. I think it is going to be a win-win for everyone. I’m pleased, thrilled. I’ve been a MTV vee-jay, I’ve sat behind the desk at CNN. I love this job. It’s a blast. Thank you again for giving me the opportunity. I think it is going to be great.’’

NICK LEMBO, NJ Sports Commission

“There is a middle school here where we used to have MMA shows. Within six years, we’ve gone from middle school to primetime network television on CBS. I think it is great for the sport. I’m very glad Gary selected New Jersey as the host venue. It’s a huge moment for the sport.’’

JOY GULLEDGE, Prudential Center

"On behalf of ownership at the AEG facility. I am happy to be here. We are a very new building and are excited to ride the wave of excitement surrounding MMA. We are looking forward to an exciting event. We hope to see everyone there."
