Let’s say that Urbano Antillon comes up short in his third try for a world title at the Home Depot Center (Showtime) on Saturday night. Anyone out there think the Urbane One will excuse a defeat by saying he had a sore mistletoe going back to New Year’s Eve?
Btw, had it been an MMA event, David Haye could have kicked Wladimir Klitschko with his missle toe.
And, what if, Raging Bull style WBA champ Brandon Rios is dethroned somehow by the underdog? Anyone think rough and tumble “Bam Bam” will blame it on weak ankles?
No, I didn’t think so.
Like most punters, I’ve got a feeling Antillon-Rios will provide some bombs bursting in air on each fighter’s face but what if it’s just a good but not great scrap. On the other foot, coming on the (ouch) heels of Haye-WKlit, a mediocre match would be an upgrade for viewers.
But, hey, who told Haye to use the same podiatrist that Mr. Blister, Shane Mosley did?
For the rest of the year, I hope losing fighters can start citing injuries above the kneecap. Let’s give the lowest extremities a rest if you will.
How about some knee “ouchies” or some of the familiar baseball injury, some groin pulls? Or a fighter can claim bursitis in his shoulder like Sonny Liston did in the first bout against Cassius Clay?
Which reminds me, how come Ray “Windmill” White never had to have Tommy John surgery?
Good to hear about the impending remarriage between Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire and Bob Arum and the crew at Top Rank.
Hear they’re just finalizing the details and one important one is how Filipina Flasher, Nonito’s sexy wife Rachel, will have to dress during fight weeks, at press conferences and at ringside.
If you recall a peeved Mr. Arum got on his trumpet and accused Mrs. Donaire of dressing like a strumpet.
Arum was not a happy camper when he learned the Donaires had boarded the Good Ship Golden Boy.

I’m hearing from fashion mavens that, while Rachel has rejected wearing a burqua, she is considering coming to the boxing events dressed as a nun.
“I’m just worried that such attire might be habit forming,” Rachel told a pal in Manila. “Not to mention that I never cared for the penguin look.”
Nunnery wear or what the round card girls wear?

Michael MarleyUsing what Don King likes to call “double shock power,” what if there were two huge boxing upsets, one on Sept. 17 and one on Nov. 12?
I guess we could then look forward to the 2012 Fight Of The Century, and certainly the most important all Mexican bout ever, between Vicious Victor Ortiz, who handed Floyd Mayweather his first ever pro loss, and Juan Manuel Marquez who, in his third try, finally whipped Pinoy Idol Manny Pacquiao.
Boxing oldtimers like to say that winning a first world title belt does wonders for a fighter’s confidence and Vicious Victor, based on his words and demeanor Tuesday at the Hudson Theater, was exuding confidence.
“I’ll be the one fighting Manny Pacquiao next year,” Ortiz said.
Some might look at his down times, the draw with Lamont Peterson and the notorious “quit job” against Marcos Maidana, and say that’s the essence of Ortiz. But Ortiz himself says we saw the content of his ring character when he bounced off the deck twice to hand cocksure Andre Berto his first defeat.
And, Ortiz promised, we’ll see more of that positive side of him when he shocks “Money” at the mGm Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Someone mentioned the opening odds—with Mayweather minus 750 and Ortiz plus 525—and Ortiz laughed.
“I don’t care about that,” the 24 year old former Kansan said. “I don’t pay attention to that. I am not one of those made champions. I didn’t get here by fighting tomato cans
“I’m not one of those guys who were fed with a spoon like that. I have a lot of slaps in my face (from critics). This is a great chance for me.
“I plan on being a world champion for 15 years. I didn’t work so hard for this opportunity to let it a slip away,” Ortiz said.
“I am definitely going to beat Mayweather.”
Ortiz explains away his controversial finish against Argentine strongman by citing family issues and a badly injured right hand.
“I let my emotions get the best of me regarding my brother and my sister and some issues,” Ortiz said. “I also had to (secretly) see some doctors and get cortisone shots in my hand.”
Criticism of his heart and courage from that loss still burns deep for Ortiz.
Ortiz revealed that he had to accept a rematch clause to get the Mayweather bout.
“So I may have to beat him twice and then fight Pacquiao,” Ortiz said.
Like I said, in the wake of besting Berto, Ortiz’s confidence level is at an all time high.

M-1 Challenge; Pat Bennett vs Kenny ‘Deuce’ Garner LIVE July 8 on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast)
All 10 fighters competing in tomorrow/Friday’s M-1 Challenge event at The Hangar at OC Fair & Event Center in Orange County, Calif., weighed in on Thursday at Hooters in Costa Mesa. Friday’s five-fight telecast will air LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).The main event will feature a rematch between the 2010 M-1 Selection Americas Tournament heavyweight finalists Pat Bennett (4-2), of Marcellus, N.Y., and Kenny ‘Deuce’ Garner (6-3), of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Garner won the first bout in September of 2010 via first round TKO (punches).
In a featured bout, 2010 M-1 Selection Americas middleweight tournament winner Tyson ‘The Anti-Hero’ Jeffries (7-4), of Troutdale, Ore., will face feared Russian striker Arthur Guseinov (7-2). As a marquee middleweight (185 Lbs.) bout, the clash sets the stage for Jeffries to battle back into title contention after suffering a crushing defeat against the division’s newly crowned M-1
Challenge middleweight champ Magomed Sultanakhmedov.
In other featured fights, Mairbek Taisumov (14-3), of Austria, will square off with Josh Bacallao (6-2, 1 NC), of Lakeland, Fla., at lightweight and Daniel Weichel (26-7), of Germany, will face Beau Baker (8-4), of Harrisonburg, Va., in another lightweight matchup.
In the opening bout of the evening, American military hero Jason Norwood (11-2), of Fort Still, Okla., will fight Tucson, Arizona’s Eddie Arizmendi (14-2), who hasn’t lost a fight in three years.
PAT BENNETT:
“I want it bad. I feel lucky to get rematch and the opportunity to get this one back. He’s the type of dude that if you give him an inch, he’ll take a mile.
“I know Kenny - he’s a brawler and if doesn’t land then he’ll get in the clinch. I’m ready. I have an answer for everything he brings me.
“My dream path would be to get my two losses back. I’ll be happy if I beat Kenny.
“Deep down, I think he knows I’m a much better fighter than I showed in our last fight. Every heavyweight has knockout power – that’s just a fact of being a heavyweight. It doesn’t matter who you’re fighting, you just have to keep your hands up.”
KENNY GARNER:
“You know I beat people’s brains out? The must mean I left some last time that I need to take care of.”
“I fought him and beat him so fast that I don’t think he knows what happened.
“I got bigger, stronger and faster since we fought. If he’s looking at our last fight then he’s in trouble because I’ve gotten a lot better since then.
“I’m a born and bred wrestler, but I’d rather punch you in your face. My wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu is good but I’ve never really had to use it.
“As soon as I connect, start counting. I’ll end the fight in six punches.”
ARTHUR GUSEINOV:
“It doesn’t mean much that I beat (Magomed) Sultanakhmedov and that he beat Jeffries in his last fight. Whatever happens in the fight will happen. I just need to fight my fight and do what works for me.
“I had a good training camp and I’m ready to get back in there and get a win.”
TYSON JEFFRIES:
“I’m going to take whatever he gives me. If a spot is there to take him down I will.
“This would be a big win for me. A finish would be awesome, points are a little boring, but a win is a win.
"He’s kind of wild so I have to watch out for any crazy punches.
“I sparred with Rampage Jackson for his fight with Lyoto Machida and he had zero takedowns against me.”
MAIRBEK TAISUMOV:
“My background is freestyle wrestling but I can adjust to my opponent.
“I respect all fighters. His background is also freestyle wrestling, and he also has good standup. He’s a complete fighter but I’m here to try to win. We will see.”
“In Austria, I train people ranging from 6 years old up to 72 years old. Everyone loves MMA in Austria.”
JOSH BACALLO:
“I think he’s a good fighter, a tough kid. I think he’ll try and do the same thing he always does, throw his right hand. I know what I’m up against.
“I’m not worried about being submitted. I’m sure he’ll keep trying to stand up.
“I enjoy striking and boxing but I’m not scared to fight on the ground. I enjoy the clinch.”
DANIEL WEICHEL:
“I’m a wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist. The last three months I’ve been training a lot on my striking and I feel really good about it.
“It’s a different style of opponent – I’ve known about it for about four weeks. I’ve just had to switch the game plan a little bit. I’m prepared for him and have a good game plan.
“My MMA skills are getting more well-rounded. MMA is getting much more popular in Germany.”
BEAU BAKER:
“I’ve been working with a striking coach so we’ve improved a lot on our striking in the last few weeks.
"I’ll take anyone on short notice. You don’t get anywhere waiting for opponents. But this one I had a lot of time to prepare for.
“I’m my own trainer so you need to be self motivated. It can get difficult but you still have to dial in and get it done.
“I think Weichel is getting more and more confident in his striking, but he’s not a super striker. I know he’s a good ground guy as well. I need to surprise him.”
JASON NORWOOD:
“We’ve been working on our boxing and being more active.
“I’ve been training and sparring with Tim Kennedy. I’ve learned a lot.”
“He talks a good game but I don’t think he’s been tested. And he’s never been victorious against a fighter of my caliber.
“Fighting in a cage is like a war. Getting your face kicked in isn’t fun.”
EDDIE ARIZMENDI:
“I’m looking to knock him out. I think after I hit him he won’t want to stand with me.
“I started out at 225 so it’s a lot of weight to cut. I haven’t fought at 185 since 2009.
“I like finishing fights in general – TKO, submissions, but if I had to choose I’d take a TKO or a KO.
“It’s not weird fighting a military guy like Jason. Business is business.
“I haven’t lost in three years and I’ve learned a lot since then. “

Kermit Cintron and Carlos Molina Workout Quotes

I thought you’d like meeting the NABF’s newest champ. Amanda is our featherweight titleholder, taking it in 1:40 of round one. She’s Bob Duffy’s newest star at 360.
Amanda Serrano is a visual artist focusing on mixed-media sculpture and installation art. JOE DWYER RE-ELECTED NABF PRESIDENT
The NABF Annual Convention was held June 5-8 at the Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Delegates from Canada, the United States, and Mexico met to review the priority actions of the sport of boxing.
Over 100 delegates coming from many different states of these three countries unanimously re-elected NABF president Joe Dwyer and his Executive Committee for a new two-year term.
WBC President Jose Sulaiman addressed the audience with a sensitive message which included a report of the WBC Cares Program and the presentation of a medal to Keaton Wong, a WBC Honorary Champion, who sadly passed away a few days ago after his high school graduation.
Dr. Sulaiman and the NABF family have launched the Tornado Relief Fund with the NABF matching all the funds raised during the convention and the WBC matching the complete amount.
These efforts will help victims of Iowa, Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri.

THREE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION PAUL WILLIAMS AND UNDEAFEATED TWO-TIME WORLD AMATEUR CHAMPION ERISLANDY LARA
PAUL WILLIAMS: Hi everybody. I just want to say I am blessed to be back in the ring and put on a good show on July 9th. I can't wait to get back in there to show everybody that I'm not washed up and that the knockout did not overcome me. This is what I do.DAN GOOSSEN: A Lot of great champions have gotten stopped over the years and gotten stopped with one punch. That is a staple of our business. And George will tell you the same thing. Lennox Lewis comes to mine, Vladimir Klitschko also.
GEORGE PETERSON: Of course if I had to write Paul's last chapter, I would have to hope that the situation wouldn't have happened with Martinez in his last fight such as it did. Because you know every great champion gets to a point where they want to show they are a true champion. Paul has achieved everything that he can except to show his greatness. This loss that happened gives him an opportunity to show his greatness and there is no other way it could happen. Paul Williams will be back July 9th.
Going back to the place where you had biggest victory and biggest defeat...
PAUL WILLIAMS: I got a lot of love from Atlantic City and I want to give my love right back. I really don't care where the fight is at, but I'm glad it is in Atlantic City - I just want to fight. I feel good that it is in Atlantic City.
GEORGE PETERSON: It doesn't matter where it is. Paul is an entertainer and he wants to entertain. He just needs the opportunity.
DAN GOOSSEN: Paul said it best. He's got some terrific fans in Atlantic City and there is no better place than to go there and perform again. We have our obstacles we have to overcome and this is just another one. This is what makes true champions. Paul Williams is a 3-time world champion and I guarantee he will be a 4-time world champion.
Do you think Paul still has the reputation of a fighter people want to avoid?
PAUL WILLIAMS: I don't think anything has changed because you still need to talk people to get in there and fight me. I think everything has been going the same.
GEORGE PETERSON: We don't want to fight down. We want to fight up. I don't know how many champions or ex-champions Paul has fought. Paul has been fighting everybody that no one has wanted to fight. That has happened and he got stopped in his last fight and now you are nailing this guy to the cross. He can't wait and I can't wait until this is resolved.
DAN GOOSSEN: I am not too much for arguing against anyone's opinion. I have no problem with them. Let them take the side that they want. Everyone has detractors, even the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali, has his detractors. Not only in defeat, but also in victory. The key is to get Paul back into the ring and show that the reputation he built up was well-deserved and I believe he'll go out there on July 9 and accomplish that. I believe we are going to be right back to where we were. We all believe Paul is going to come back stronger and better than ever because there is something about great champions coming back from adversity that makes them a better champion.
Are you motivated by "people jumping off the bandwagon?"
PAUL WILLIAMS: It really doesn't bother me if they jump on or jump off. I just want to go in there and put on a really good show for the people that are my fans that really love me.

PAUL WILLIAMS: No reason. The way I look at it, I took some time off to have some fun. Now it's back to business. Now why I never said anything - if I did say something - people would still have their opinions. I have to prove to them again, when I get in the ring to do my best. People just may be wondering what's going on.
Going back, would you change anything in the Martinez fight or was it just the one punch?
GEORGE PETERSON: There are no adjustments for that punch. It is a punch that is not seen. You can't make an adjustment for something you cannot see. It's like the wind blowing. We can't see the wind, but it's there. I have been hearing quite a lot about that punch and if we made an adjustment. You don't go to the gym every day and practice for a punch you don't see. It's as simple as that.
DAN GOOSSEN: We thought we were going to go with Ishida, but as the talks progressed, from the prospective of all of us, Lara was the more capable opponent. And George touched on it earlier; there really is no one Paul ever declined to face. There is something to be said about fighting young, hungry lions. Lara has been around like most of the Cuban fighters throughout the years and has a storied amateur background. These guys are tough fighters and you can't look past them. But on the other hand they come with great credentials and it's a great platform for Paul Williams.
Will there be a change in style?
GEORGE PETERSON: Paul Williams' style has gotten him 39 wins out of 41 fights. In addition to that, Paul has a wind over everyone that he fought. I see no reason, if you have 39 wins out of 41 fights; you want to change the style. If something is working, you keep it working. That's what happens in boxing. We'll go with what's working. What's working is what we'll go with.
Will there ever be a Williams-Martinez 3?
PAUL WILLIAMS: It's up to the fans and everybody. I'm down for it. I plan on 3 more fights. My manager is telling me 2 more. Once we get by Lara and the fans want it and HBO wants it - I want it.
DAN GOOSSEN: Believe me, the fans, HBO everyone will want it. It is a fight we'd love to do and I know Martinez' promoter Lou DiBella has made certain comments regarding the presentation of it. I'm not going to get into that now, but the bottom line is, we've got a tough nut to crack on July 9 with Lara. As has been true to Paul throughout his career, there has been no one that he wouldn't fight.
What are your opinions of the weight class you'll be fighting in?
PAUL WILLIAMS: It doesn't matter to me. Everyone talks about me as the 'catch-weight king.' Whatever weight they want me to be at is the weight where I'll go. '54, '47, and '50 - whatever weight Mr. Peterson, Dan and Al decide to go with, I'm there for it.
DAN GOOSSEN: Nothing has changed. He is going out there and showing the Punishment style again. Whether it is his weight or another division, it doesn't matter.
Was Lara an ideal guy to make a comeback?
PAUL WILLIAMS: It didn't matter to me who it was, as long as it was a live body that had some skills. I leave that to Mr. Peterson, Al and Dan.
GEORGE PETERSON: Like Paul mentioned, we just needed somebody in the ring to come back with. Somebody that we can make a statement on. This guy is supposed to be an outstanding fighter. 300 and some amateur fights and he's 16-0 and he's got power. So hey, it's just as well him or anybody else. What we need to do here is get this win. Every time we step in the ring, we know there is a possibility of him winning and a possibility of him losing. Our focus is winning and that's it.
PAUL WILLIAMS: I am going to make a statement regardless. I'm going to show him when I get in there and show my true greatness. For me, that is the best guy to get in the ring with - a guy that can take a punch. People that think I'm washed up I can prove to them it's not so. That is going to be the statement - me getting back in the ring to prove my point.
DAN GOOSSEN: The key is keeping it on the same vein. We move forward with Paul's career since we've been together to get someone to make the media to believe it's a great comeback fight. It's a tough one, whether he's a puncher or a mover, he's a qualified challenger. The best way to make a statement, whether you knock him out or beat him in 12-rounds, is to make it against someone that is considered a formidable foe. That's what we've got here on July 9th. You don't know what can happen when you walk in the ring - win or lose but we've been in this business long enough to know that it's a gamble no matter how many rounds it is. In most cases, you've got two men who want to win badly. There is always a risk but you lessen that risk with someone like a Paul Williams, who's going to go out there and prepare himself for whoever is going to be in that ring.
Were there problems finding a name guy as an opponent?
DAN GOOSSEN: When it comes to finding opponents for Paul Williams it has always been a problem, which is why we have him fight at 147, 154 and 160. Paul and George as always have been willing to do it. Rather then anyone turning down a fight, we were looking for someone to present a formidable task for Paul. The Ishida possibility had some sexiness to it because he stopped Kirkland in the first round. Lara obviously brings a whole new attitude - 300 amateur fights, 2-time amateur world champion, undefeated pro. It was more or less what we were looking for and we got that in Lara and that's where we are.
GEORGE PETERSON: If you've ever seen a Paul Williams fight, you know it's not a sleeping pill. You're not going to go to sleep on a Paul Williams fight. Most opponents know they have to fight 12-rounds. There are not going to be any points of rest in a Paul Williams fight. Most of the guys don't want opponents such as that - throwing 100 punches a round and who will throw more punches in the 12th round than the 1st round. Paul could fight at 147 and 154 - he is not a middleweight and could never make middleweight. The highest he can ever get and that is eating breakfast the day of the weigh-in is 157 lbs. This guy has been fighting out of his chosen weight class for the longest time. He'll fight anybody anytime and if you happen to look up his opponents, you'll find they are guys that no one else would fight. If I had another fighter would I fight Paul Williams? No, I wouldn't fight him.
PAUL WILLIAMS: I would love a gimme fight but they don't ever give me those kinds of fights. When I retire, I want my kids to say, 'he never ducked anybody. That's what I am building my legacy on. When people look at me, I want to remind them of a throwback fighter. I want to fight the best guys that no one else will fight. 'You put on a great show, whether you win or lose.' I am making my own history.
Cintron again?
PAUL WILLIAMS: I plan on fighting 2 or 3 more times. My manager wants 2. Before I hang my gloves up, Cintron and Martinez would be the two we are looking for. But it all depends on how Al, Dan and Mr. Peterson see if after this fight. Then I can talk about Martinez and see how it goes.
Thinking about retiring in 2012?
PAUL WILLIAMS: My business is going pretty good and I've got all my ducks in a row. Mr. Peterson said I' don't need this anymore. You became a 3-time world champion; you've got your money and your business. Do 2 more fights and give it up.
ERIC GOMEZ: We are very excited to be on this call and to be getting this fight against Paul Williams. I still consider Paul one of the top fighters pound-for-pound. He had a little bit of a setback but like all champions, hey; they get it up and show what they are made of. We don't expect anything different for this fight. It is a great opportunity for Lara and the kind of fight he's been waiting for and he's not taking Paul lightly and I think it should be a terrific fight.
ERISLANDY LARA: We just finished up some sparring. We are having a great camp and we are preparing for Paul Williams. We know everything he has done in his career but we are prepared for this fight.
Paul is tall, how do you prepare?
ERISLANDY LARA: I know Paul Williams is very tall for that weight class. We've got a kid here who is tall and been giving us great work is sparring. Edwin Rodriguez, who is a super middleweight, has been working with us. So we are ready for this guy mentally and physically.
What Paul Williams do you think you'll face?
ERISLANDY LARA: We are talking about a guy that is a 3-time world champion. I am not preparing for the Paul Williams that got knocked out in two rounds by Martinez. We are preparing for the Paul Williams that beat the Winky Wrights and guys like that. I have been waiting for this opportunity for a very long time and this is my chance to shine.
Where does it take him if he defeats Paul Williams?
ERIC GOMEZ: This is the kind of fight he has been waiting for his entire life. He was one of the top amateur fighters for many years. As a pro he has passed every test. This is the big show for him. This is his world title fight even though there is no title involved he is fighting one of the top fighters of our time. If he beats Paul Williams, we will be considered in all the big fights. - the Cotto's, the Alvarez' - all the jr. middleweights. This is going to open all the doors. It's going to be on HBO and whenever you get on HBO you have to shine. There is no tomorrow. He has to get past this fight.
Is there a possibility the winner get Canelo Alvarez?
ERIC GOMEZ: There is a possibility. We would look at every offer but we have to see what happens in this fight. It's a good fight and both are tough fighters. Williams is one of the best and we'll see what happens.
DAN GOOSSEN: I heard you mention Cotto - has that one been thought out?
ERIC GOMEZ: Obviously all the big names will be considered. You have a network like HBO that will make things happen and if the money's there it can happen. If Williams gets by Lara, the media and the fans will be pressing for big fights for him - with any of the champions.
You had a tough fight you last time out and were criticized, what makes you think you are ready for this?
ERISLANDY LARA: I took the last fight lightly and had a bad night. Anybody can have a bad night. This time it's going to be a different story. I am preparing for Paul Williams. I am not cutting any corners and of course, if I get past him I am ready for any of the champions.
What made the last fight so difficult?
ERISLANDY LARA: I was not prepared mentally or physically that night. I realized that if I am not prepared 100% I am better off nit fighting. It was more difficult than I had planned for and Molina is a very good fighter. I thought I won the fight clearly, 6-4. Going into this fight I knew it was a good wake-up call. I just got back in the gym and keep pressing.
How much of a risk is it to take a jump up in competition?
ERIC GOMEZ: It's always a risk when you are fighting a guy like Paul Williams. Before his last fight he was one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. A great champion and one of the best of our era. We feel it is time for Erislandy. He fought against Brewer and he dominated him - he won like every round. He fought Perez in a tough fight and won every round. The Carlos Molina fight was a draw and a close fight. Those guys took him through the fire and he came out unscathed and I think he's ready for a fight like this. He is not taking him lightly. If you are going to be something in this sport you've got to get through these tough fights.
What did he find difficult with Molina and how would it help against Williams?
LUIS DECOUBAS JR: He had knocked out the prior 4 guys and sometimes you think boxing gets easy and you tend to underestimate other opponents and that's how he overlooked Molina. Molina is a good fighter and has beaten a lot of good guys.
ERIC GOMEZ: I think we should be thanking Molina. If it weren't for Molina, we wouldn't be getting this fight. We should send him a fruit basket or something.
Do you think he's getting credit for fighting these tough guys?
LUIS DECOUBAS JR.: We fought Danny Perez and in his next fight gave the guy McEwen all he could handle in a draw. He knocked out Raines in one round and we feel that Williams is the right style for our guy.
ERIC GOMEZ: We feel that he is ready. He's beaten some of these guys. Grady brewer was a tough guy. Nobody gave Brewer a chance against Fernando Guererro but we found out he could still fight. Danny Perez is a tough fighter. These are guys that will test your fighter and you'll know what you have. Lara passed with flying colors and he beat them pretty much every round. This is going to be a hell of a fight. It is a big step up but you've got to jump on these opportunities. We feel he has a great shot at beating Paul Williams. When we beat Paul Williams we'll be a very good place.

(David) Haye Fever spreading fast: Guru Bos feels it but sage Elbaum resists
Haye Fever, that’s what I’m calling it.It’s a condition marked by unbridled optimism bordering on euphoria. Those are the symptoms and they are affecting the brains of fight fans worldwide who are falling into what some would say is a mental trap, into thinking that brash British heavyweight David “Hayemaker” Haye is going to pull off a shocking upset in Hamburg Saturday night by scrambling Wladimir Klitschko.
One boxing maven not afflicted with Haye Fever is ageless promoter-matchmaker-bon vivant Don Elbaum.
Permanently known as the man who got another Don, last name King, started in the boxing promotion field, Elbaum could make a weasel type prediction on the big heavyweight matchup which will be screened live by HBO in the USA.
You know, one of those prognostications in which the predictor says Billy can win in the early rounds, either fighter can triumph in the middle frames and Joey will be the winner if it goes past 10 rounds.
No namby-pamby stuff like that for The Donald.
“Nah,” Elbaum said by phone Wednesday from his Pennsylvania mini-mansion. “I am picking Klitschko early and I’m picking Klitschko late. I’m picking Klitschko in the middle rounds as well.”
Elbaum, like many, believes Haye’s best ability is salesmanship, not in winning fights.
“Haye has been great in selling this fight, no doubt,” Elbaum said. “But that can’t change the fact that Haye’s got no chin and Klitschko whacks.
“Also, Wladimir can be so careful, so methodical, I don’t see him taking any big chance, doing anything to expose himself to David. Haye’s best battle plan is to jump on Klitschko from the opening bell but Klitschko will just jab, hold and then jab, hold.”
Meanwhile, down in Clearwater, Florida, fight guru Johnny Bosdal, better known as the Wizard of Bos, sees a better chance for the decided underdog.
“Haye can knock him out if he puts real pressure on the guy,” Bos said. “Haye is a real, genuine puncher.”
I wrapped it up with Bos then as I was fearful of having a runny nose.
Haye Fever is spreading fast.
But will it last beyond Saturday night?
My fearless forecast? Now I do have this fistic allergy.
Haye gets lucky, comes off the deck early to stop Wladimir in the sixth round.
Brother Vitali then vows familial revenge.

Q & A With UBO Title-Challenger Anthony Dirrell; Dante Craig Steps In To Face Dirrell
In the following Q & A, Dirrell speaks, among other things, about his upcoming fight, new promotional company Team Dirrell Promotions and about beating cancer. And would he ever consider the possibility of one day fighting his brother, Super Six participant Andre?
On July 2nd at Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan, local boxing star Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (21-0, 18 KOs) will take on Dante Craig for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Inter-Continental Super Middleweight title.

Anthony Dirrell has a new opponent for Saturdays Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Inter-Continental Super Middleweight title fight at the Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan. Original foe Michi Munoz won’t be able to fight after being arrested, and in steps 2000 Olympian Dante “Inferno” Craig (18-9-1, 13 KOs).32-year-old Craig turned professional in 2001, beating undefeated Darren Fallen at “The Mecca of Boxing”, Madison Square Garden in New York.
But already in his third professional fight he came up short when another undefeated opponent, Sherwin Davis, stopped him in the third round.
Since being derailed by Davis, Craig has operated with mixed results. His best victory came in 2006 when he stopped former WBA World Champion Carl Daniels, but that triumph was followed by s string of defeats to the likes of Olympic Bronze medalist Terrence Cauthen and undefeated prospects Michael Walker and Aaron Pryor Jr.
The UBO Inter-Continental title fight against Anthony Dirrell is a massive opportunity for Dante Craig to fulfill some of the promise he showed as an amateur and in parts of his professional career.

Anthony, It is well known that your brother Andre won an Olympic Bronze medal, but you were also a very good amateur yourself. Please tell me a bit about your own amateur career, and how it came about that you turned professional in 2005?
I had a good amateur career and my record was 170-23. I have won many amateur titles, and also, I was injured but still competed in the 2004 Olympic trials and got 3rd place. Turning pro for me was a big transition, I enjoyed the move to the pros but early on I was cautious about fighting without headgear.
You are fighting Dante Craig for the UBO Inter-Continental Super Middleweight title on July 2nd. He has fought some big names, is a former NABC champion and has been in several title fights while this will be your first championship fight. Do you feel a lot of pressure ahead of this fight, and how do you expect to handle the challenge that is Michi Munoz?
I don't feel any pressure fighting Dante Craig. I'm just looking forward to the opportunity to step up and fight an opponent with a lot of experience. I expect to handle fighting Craig well, and I'm working hard in the gym for this fight.
Tell me about Dirrell Promotions?
Other fighters like Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, Oscar De La Hoya & Floyd Mayweather Jr. have started their own promotional companies. Team Dirrell felt it was a good opportunity for us as well. We want to give back to our hometown Flint, Michigan. We want the fans and our city to get behind us and our new boxing promotion company.

The Craig fight will be your biggest fight so far inside the ring, a title fight in your hometown, but I take it your biggest fight outside the ring was when you were diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, in 2007. Thankfully you beat the disease, but how did it change your life, and did you ever fear that it would end you boxing career?Cancer was definitely the biggest challenge in my life. With the support of my fans, friends and family I was able to beat cancer and get back in the boxing ring.
The disease did cause for you to be out of the ring for almost two years, but you have won nine straight fights since coming back in late 2008. Do you feel as if your boxing career has a greater purpose now, than just becoming a champion and getting big fights?
Boxing is what I love to do, I'm happy to be fighting for my first pro boxing title and I work hard to provide for my family. Having cancer has definitely made me look different at my life.
The Klitschko brothers have stated many times that they would never fight each other. You and Andre box in the same weight class, but would the two of you ever fight each other if the circumstances were right? Perhaps if both of you become world champions and it’s the biggest and most lucrative fight out there for you?
We spar together, but under no circumstances would my brother Andre and I ever fight each other in a real fight.
Please describe how a typical day for you looks when you are preparing for a fight?
A typical day for me when I'm training for a fight is getting up at 6am for breakfast, 8am going for my daily run, then go home to relax, 1pm going to the gym and train. I usually spar 3 times a week, I also make sure I eat healthy and maintain my weight as I prepare for a fight.
What kind of show can the fans expect from you and Dirrell Promotions on July 2nd at Atwood Stadium?
The fans can expect a good boxing show, and we also have a fireworks show for the fans. This is a big event for Team Dirrell Promotions and our city. Flint has gone thru a lot of changes with factories closing and a lack of jobs. Team Dirrell Promotions wants to lift up our city and inspire our community.
Anything you would like to say in closing?
I want the fans to know that Anthony Dirrell is on the rise in the sport of boxing. I'm looking for a world title fight in the near future. I want to thank my fans for their support. I want all my fans to come out and support Team Dirrell Promotions and my fight against Dante Craig on July 2 at Atwell Stadium.

SKIP "STRICTLY BUSINESS" SCOTT Comments on July 2nd Heavyweight Championship fight between Klitschko vs Haye
Are you excited about the up coming fight between Klitschko and Haye?I am excited. It is a very interesting fight and has been talked about for three years.
What were your thoughts when you saw the fight was finally made?
Exactly that, finally! But I do know it is a business and Haye did an incredible job promoting the fight and talking it up, so he not only has European fans interested but actually the World is going to be watching this fight. We haven't had that kind of excitement in the Heavyweight division in years.
Who do you think is happier that the fight is finally made Klitschko or Haye?That is easy, Haye! He gets a chance to be the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World and his biggest pay day he has ever had. Not bad. Not bad at all!
Who do you think will win the fight and how will that fighter win?
Ouch...that is a million dollar question! I believe it will not go into round 7. You have two hard punchers with questionable chins. Both fighters have been knocked out. At the same time Klitschko's defense and the ability to avoid big punches has improved incredibly well with Emanuel Stewart working with him. Haye has fought tall fighters but none of them are the same as the jab and right hand he will face with Klitschko. I think you will see some interesting movement from both in the first three rounds......then we will see a dogfight...Haye's speed could be an advantage in a slugfest in close.
Do you think the outcome of fight will affect the Heavyweight division and why?
Only if Haye wins. Everyone is ready for a change in the Heavyweight division. It will open a lot of doors and bring some talking back to the division.
If you had to choose which guy you would rather fight?
I would love to fight either, especially Klitschko. He has been champion for the last few years and I think my style would give him problems. I can outjab him because I have a longer reach. He has more experience than me but my heart and desire to win would prevail. He is a great champion but it's getting close to my time to shine. America needs a heavyweight they can be proud of that can box and slug....I'm that guy.
So what if Haye wins would you fight him?
In a New York minute. Yes, he is fast and quick and packs a punch but so do I. I am just as fast as Haye if not faster. My speed is very deceptive because of my size. Not only can I fight at a distance but I can fight in close and when he tries to get close to me he will get hit with jaw breaking uppercuts. So yes I would love to fight Haye, and I wish him the best of luck against Klitschko cause win, lose or draw one of those guys will have to fight me if not both and I am up for the challenge.
Recently...in fact...this past weekend HBO featured a heavyweight fight.
What were your thoughts about the Stiverne vs Austin fight?
If anyone can bring the heavyweights back into the picture is Don King knows that arena well. Stiverne is a new upcoming prospect with a little 'pop' in his punches. Austin still has good experience. I would love to fight either one and sincerely believe I would stop both earlier than the 10th round.
Looking at your record you haven't fought an eight round fight yet.
Are you ready for 8 to 10 rounders?
Absolutely! I train and spar 10-12 rounds. Look ...I've taken my time to do this right so I can be the best heavyweight America can produce. I'm throwing 60 punches a round...every round. I'm jabbing like a heavyweight should. I am a fierce body puncher. I'm ready for television. My agent/promoter, Kerry Daigle, has two to three more fights lined up this year for me. From there...As Mills Lane would say, "Let's get it on"!!

Boxing 360 inks 19-0 welterweight Prospect Vitaliy Demyanenko
Boxing 360 has announced today that it has signed unbeaten welterweight prospect Vitaliy “Demyan”Demyanenko (19-0, 12 KOs) to an exclusive promotional contract.
“We’re looking forward to introducing Vitaliy to a big Kazak community in New York City, in addition to Russian boxing fans living there,” Boxing 360 Founder/CEO Mario Yagobi announced. “This is a great overall signing for our company. Vitaliy was an accomplished amateur boxer whose father was a Olympic silver medalist. Vitaliy is undefeated as a pro and was rated No. 8 by the WBO in May, but he was dropped due to inactivity. We want to get him in a fight, back in the rankings, and on his way to becoming world champion.”
Born and raised in Kazakhstan, Demyanenko had more than 150 amateur fights, capturing the Kazakhstan National Championship in 1999, as well as a gold medal in the Junior Olympics.
Vitali was born to box. Representing the USSR, his father Viktor Demyanenko was the 1980 Olympic Silver Medalist, as well as the 1979 European lightweight champion. His son, Vitali, however, didn’t start boxing until he was 13, after competing three years in Judo.
Demyanenko is a college graduate who speaks Russian, English, Kajak and is learning Spanish. “I heard a lot of good things about Boxing 360,” he said yesterday on his 28th birthday. “They’ve been good to me and will get me a world title fight. I’m ready to fight anybody in the welterweight division. I want to join my fellow countrymen, (light heavyweight) Beibut Shumenov and (middleweight) Gennady Golovkin, as world champion.
“I have so many tapes of different fighters that I watch to learn from. I’m a boxer who can brawl. I have a good punch but, against good fighters, I need to move around and break them down before mixing it up.”
Now living and fighting out of Los Angeles, Demyanenko is the reigning WBO Asia Pacific and PABA welterweight champion. His most notable victories have been against world title challenger Paul Delgado (DEC12), Anderson Clayton (DEC12), Jorge Daniel Miranda (DEC12) and Walter Sergio Gomez (TKO2).”
“The signing of Vitaliy Demyanenko strengthens the Boxing 360 stable even more,” noted Bob Duffy, Director of Boxing for Boxing 360. “We also have one of the top super bantamweights in the world, Leon Moore, former world champion Alejandro Berrio, new NABA featherweight champ Amanda Serrano, undefeated super middleweight prospect Lennox Allen, and so many other talented boxers.”
A southpaw, Vitaliy sparred two weeks with Lucas Matthysse, who was getting ready for his HBO main event last Saturdaynight against Devon Alexander.

“We’re looking forward to introducing Vitaliy to a big Kazak community in New York City, in addition to Russian boxing fans living there,” Boxing 360 Founder/CEO Mario Yagobi announced. “This is a great overall signing for our company. Vitaliy was an accomplished amateur boxer whose father was a Olympic silver medalist. Vitaliy is undefeated as a pro and was rated No. 8 by the WBO in May, but he was dropped due to inactivity. We want to get him in a fight, back in the rankings, and on his way to becoming world champion.”
Born and raised in Kazakhstan, Demyanenko had more than 150 amateur fights, capturing the Kazakhstan National Championship in 1999, as well as a gold medal in the Junior Olympics.
Vitali was born to box. Representing the USSR, his father Viktor Demyanenko was the 1980 Olympic Silver Medalist, as well as the 1979 European lightweight champion. His son, Vitali, however, didn’t start boxing until he was 13, after competing three years in Judo.
Demyanenko is a college graduate who speaks Russian, English, Kajak and is learning Spanish. “I heard a lot of good things about Boxing 360,” he said yesterday on his 28th birthday. “They’ve been good to me and will get me a world title fight. I’m ready to fight anybody in the welterweight division. I want to join my fellow countrymen, (light heavyweight) Beibut Shumenov and (middleweight) Gennady Golovkin, as world champion.
“I have so many tapes of different fighters that I watch to learn from. I’m a boxer who can brawl. I have a good punch but, against good fighters, I need to move around and break them down before mixing it up.”
Now living and fighting out of Los Angeles, Demyanenko is the reigning WBO Asia Pacific and PABA welterweight champion. His most notable victories have been against world title challenger Paul Delgado (DEC12), Anderson Clayton (DEC12), Jorge Daniel Miranda (DEC12) and Walter Sergio Gomez (TKO2).”

Dominguez and Arturo Santiago engaged in a terrific fight that Dominguez fought well and Santiago should incredible courage and kept coming back every time that it seemed Dominguez would be in control.
Dominguez closed the show in style by dropping Santiago in the final moment to secure the victory and remain perfect at 8-0.
In the co-feature, Melissa McMorrow trekked across the country to win the New York State Lightweight title with a split decision over Eileen Olszewski in a ladies Flyweight bout.
It was a good close fight with McMorrow bobbing and weaving herself inside while Olszewski tried to control the fight from range.
McMorrow was able to win a lot of the little inside battles and worked the body to gain the narrow victory.
In what was the most intense and controversial fight of the night, Ariel Duran and Jonathan Cuba battled a spirited bout for the New York State Lightweight crown
The two waged war with Duran landing some nice lead rights and scoring a knockdown on Cuba. Cuba picked up the pace and stalked hurt Duran in the last round.
Most at ringside thought Duran deserved the victory and the title and talk quickly pointed towards a rematch
Other Winners on the card included Michael Brooks, Edward Valdez, Martin Wright, Tommy Rainone and Bryan Abraham, who scored a shocking third round stoppage over Scottie Burrell

Macklin hoping Haye isn't KO'd by the scorecardsMatthew Macklin hopes that the uproar surrounding his controversial points defeat to WBA World Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm in Germany at the weekend will decrease the chances of David Haye suffering a similar fate against Wladimir Klitschko in Hamburg this Saturday.
Macklin appeared to have done more than enough to rip Sturm's title away in front of a sell out crowd of almost 20,000 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne only for two of the three scoring judges to deny him his World title dream.
The decision baffled many of those in attendance and the millions watching worldwide on SAT.1 in Germany, Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and on Epix in the U.S. A viewers poll on the SAT.1 website spoke volumes with 76% of German's polled believing that Macklin had won the fight as opposed to just 24% for Sturm.
The German media were equally outraged with headlines since the fight such as, "A Sturm of Indignation", "German Boxing Disgrace", "Miscarriage of Justice" and "Fluke Victory".
Macklin hopes that the uproar will benefit David Haye should his clash with Klitschko be decided on the scorecards. "I think David has the power and speed to knock Klitschko out anyway and take it out of the judges hands but if it goes to the scorecards then I think the spotlight will really be on the judges after my fight and hopefully David will get a fair shake," said Macklin.
"I got back from Germany yesterday but the fan's over there were coming up to me and apologising for the decision. I think they have been very embarrassed by it and the German media reports on the fight have reflected that. One of the papers even reported that Felix needed to have TV make up applied so that he would look a little better at the post fight press conference!
"I believe I was the better man on the night and it seems to me that almost everyone aside from those two judges who scored for Sturm saw it the same way. It was a tough fight but I thought I was a clear winner.
"After the fight I asked him for a rematch and he told me 'I'm a man, I will give you a rematch'.
He knows I beat him and he's embarrassed by that decision so if he's the fighter I think he is I'm sure he will want to put it right but if not then I won't lose any sleep over it and I will move on. In our hearts we both know that I won that fight hands down. I proved that I belong at the highest level and this has only made me more determined than ever to succeed."
Macklin's manager Brian Peters says that the support from the boxing community worldwide has been heartening. "A lot of very respected people within the sport have spoken out on the decision and it's been great to receive that kind of support. Thomas Hauser and Dan Rafael are among two of the most widely read commentators on the sport and they both had Matthew winning by scores of 117 - 111 and Lennox Lewis said it was 'highway robbery' and one of the worst decisions he'd seen. The former World Heavyweight title challenger Axel Schulz was commentating for German TV and he had Matthew winning by three rounds.
"We've been inundated with emails from German fans expressing their disgust at the decision and Felix's own Facebook page has been flooded with negative comments as well from Germans so that tells it's own story."

"Sturm fought Matthew Macklin in the "champion's" hometown of Cologne, Germany. The bout was televised in the United States live on Epix. It was understood going in that, if there was an outrageous decision, it would be in Sturm's favor. Felix might be a better boxer than Matthew. But on Saturday, Macklin fought a better fight. He clearly won eight of the twelve rounds. Two more were close.
I scored the fight 117-111 for Macklin. Judge Levi Martinez scored it 115-113 for Matthew, which was a bit of a stretch in Sturm's favour.
Then came the obscenity. Judges Roberto Ramirez and Jose Ignacio Martinez each scored the bout for Sturm by a 116-112 margin.
The decision was unfair to Macklin, who has made every sacrifice necessary to get to the point in his career where he was positioned to win a belt."
