NEW YORK– Last weekend for DiBella Entertainment can be summed up in one line, “two out of three ain’t bad”. DBE had three of its combatants fighting in separate bouts in two different locations on Friday and Saturday.



The weekend started off well in the Cayman Islands as Ronald “The Chosen One” Hearns improved his undefeated record to 19-0, 15 KO’s as he knocked out Jose Luis Gonzalez (12-4-1, 10 KO’s) in the seventh round of a highly entertaining affair. Hearns looked impressive, throwing strong jabs in a fight that appeared around the world live on ShoBox. Ronald’s improvement has been extraordinary and he is prepared for bigger and better things.

The next day in Memphis, Tennessee DBE promoted HBO’s Boxing After Dark at FedExForum.


In the night’s co-feature, DBE heavyweight Chazz “The Gentleman” Witherspoon challenged a vicious competitor in WBC Continental Americas champ Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola. Both fighters came out swinging and looking for the knockout. Arreola caught Witherspoon, putting him on the mat twice in the third round. The second knockdown occurred as the bell rang to end the round. The referee had no idea that the bell had rung. After looking confused and deliberating with the Commission for several minutes, the referee disqualified Witherspoon as his corner came in the ring thinking the round was over. The corner was not stopped by the inspector, thus they proceeded. “This was not the way for this fight to end,” said DBE head Lou DiBella. “Chris Arreola is a true warrior and we wish him luck on his quest to win the heavyweight title. This referee was completely wrong and lost control of the fight. The corner was never stopped from coming into the ring. This fight had a right to come to a proper and conclusive finish.”

DBE got back on the winning track with an exclamation point in the main event in Memphis. Top DBE welterweight Andre Berto showed he is the future of the power packed division, when the 24-year old captured the vacant WBC welterweight title knocking out tough and rugged Mexican Mikki Rodriguez in the 7th round. “I am so proud to have promoted Andre since his pro debut and I’m thrilled to add another World Champion to DBE’s family of fighters,” said DiBella. “Andre Berto will be a star in boxing for years to come.”

NEW YORK– There is a new player ready to take over the 154 lb. division and his name is Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KO’s). The DBE Super Welterweight looked outstanding Saturday night knocking out a highly motivated, well prepared Archack TerMeliksetian (16-7, 13 KO’s), in the 7th round of a scheduled 10 round contest. The Argentinean’s win Saturday night came on the undercard of the Vernon Forrest-Sergio Mora WBC Super Welterweight Title fight where Mora, the challenger, upset Forrest to win the belt. Showtime Fighters Wear Lakers, Celtics Jerseys at N.Y. Press Conf.‏

For the record, both fighters predict that the series will “go the distance” and end in seven games. Mora likes his hometown team, the Lakers, while Forrest, believes that the Celtics will take home pro basketball’s ultimate trophy.

“The Celtics have more star players and a better bench,” Forrest said.

“Both teams have a tradition of greatness and rivalry,” Mora said. “However, the Lakers have youth, a hot bench and are destined to win.”

Three unbeaten boxers headline FedExForum card DiBella's HBO event built to be affordable

Boxing promoter Lou DiBella's head and stomach have driven him to Memphis again.

Unbeaten boxers Andre Berto, Chazz Witherspoon and Rayonta Whitfield headline an HBO "Boxing After Dark" tripleheader on June 21 in FedExForum. The eight-bout card is presented by New York-based DiBella Entertainment in association with Memphis-based Prize Fight Boxing.

Berto, the unbeaten NABF welterweight champion at 21-0 with 18 knockouts, faces Miguel Angel Rodriguez (29-2, 23 KOs) in a 12-round WBC title elimination bout between that organizations' No. 1 and No. 2 ranked contenders. In the next few weeks, it's likely the WBC will revise the fight to being an interim world title bout.



Witherspoon, an unbeaten heavyweight (23-0, 15 KO's) who's ranked third nationally by the USBA, will slug it out with Chris Areola, who's also unbeaten (23-0, 21 KOs) and ranked No. 6 in the world by the IBF. The opponent for Whitfield, 21-0 with 10 KOs as the NABO flyweight champion and ranked No. 1 in the world by the WBO, hasn't been finalized.



The complete card will be announced later this week at a press conference in
FedExForum.

DiBella originally had the fight set in New York, but staging it there was cost prohibitive. So he turned to Memphis, where he has teamed once more with tireless promoter Brian Young of Prize Fight Boxing. DiBella and Young staged FedExForum cards the last two years with former middleweight world champ Jermain Taylor of Little Rock as the main attraction.

"Memphis is a great place to do an event, and I do need my barbecue fix," DiBella said. "The Rendezvous already has my name on it for one night, and I'll be doing my circle of barbecue for a week."

The one thing DiBella learned from his previous experiences in Memphis -- besides the difference between wet and dry ribs -- is the ticket price ceiling of the Memphis sports fan.

That's why DiBella and Young have priced tickets from a mere $25 to $100 (for a ringside seat). All seats will be on the floor and the lower bowl of the arena, and Young said 70 percent of the tickets will be $50 or less. Tickets will likely go on sale Friday or Saturday.

"The economy is terrible right now," DiBella said. "But we've gotten a good deal with the FedExForum, and they've allowed us to make this a very affordable fight. I know Memphis isn't Las Vegas and isn't a casino town, but Memphis is a great place to do an event. This (fight) is a way for me to come back to Memphis and price a fight to where even the ringside seats are affordable for regular folk to see some of the best in boxing."

Four years ago, Berto, Witherspoon and Whitfield were chasing Olympic dreams at the U.S. Olympic boxing trials in Tunica. That's why it will be unique to have them on the same card in the three featured fights.

Berto last fought in September, scoring an 11th-round knockout of David Estrada in Atlantic City. The victory gave Berto the NABF welterweight championship and made him the No. 1 contender in the WBC and IBF, just ahead of Rodriguez.



June's fight against Rodriguez will be Berto's third in FedExForum. His last appearance in May 2006, on the Jermain Taylor-Cory Spinks undercard, ended with his seventh-round TKO of Martinus Clay.

"Rodriguez is a real knockout puncher, so Berto has to be careful," DiBella said.

The Areola-Witherspoon fight is scheduled for 12 rounds, but Young said it won't last that long.

"They are both headhunters, and they are the two best American heavyweights out there, America's best hopes to get the title back," Young said. "Right now, the Russians are dominating."

Young said Whitfield's bout is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

"He's very close to fighting for a world title," said Young, who's Whitfield's promoter. "He has this one more test to pass in June, then he could get the world title fight, possibly in the fall. This is the biggest fight of his life so far."

Young is excited about the diversity of talent on the card and the ticket prices.

"We've made the tickets very affordable, so there's no excuse why people can't come out and watch world class fighters on an HBO-televised card," said Young, who is bringing a televised world title fight to Memphis for the seventh straight year.

JOEL JULIO MOVES TO #4 IN THE WBC WITH VICTORY; Top-contender sees title shot on horizon

TOTOWA, NJ– Top jr. middleweight contender Joel Julio’s impressive April 30 victory over Ishe Smith earned him a two-spot jump in the WBC rankings, it was announced today by Main Events CEO Kathy Duva and All Star Boxing President Tuto Zabala. The Colombian bomber is now installed as the WBC’s #4 ranked contender and is looking for a showdown against any of the major sanctioning body champions.

“Ishe is a difficult opponent because he is so good defensively,” said Julio. “That is why I wanted to fight him. Now I want to get back in the ring and fight for a title as soon as possible.”

Julio (32-1, 29 KO’s) is also ranked #4 by the IBF, #6 by the WBA, and #8 by the WBO. The 23-year-old Monteria, Colombia native has stopped 21 opponents within the first three rounds. He has won his last five bouts, three by knockout. In 2005 Julio was named “Prospect of the Year” by several media outlets, including ESPN.com.

CHICAGO, IL- World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz took a quick break from preparation for his title defense against “THE MEXICUTIONER” Manny Pacquiao on June 28th as he was honored as the Grand Marshal at Chicago’s Cinco de Mayo Parade on Sunday afternoon.

Ten of thousands lined the parade route along Cermak Rd. in the Little Village Mexican neighborhood, many moving past the barricades to personally wish Diaz well and have their photograph taken with the Chicago native.

Shouts of “VIVA MEXICO” and” VIVA DIAZ” filled the air along the two mile route as Diaz and his family rode past the huge crowds on the beautiful spring day.

“It was a great parade, the people were terrific. The support they showed me as I work towards the fight with Pacquiao truly humbled me. I’m glad I had the opportunity to share this with my wife and little boy and with all of the families that turned out.”

LAS VEGAS– Former two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz has announced that he’s prepared to replace WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev to fight another former WBA title-holder, Nikolay Valuev, for the WBA belt.

Chagaev pulled out of his scheduled mandatory defense against Valuev in May, reportedly due to a cold that forced him to break training, but Ruslan hasn’t made his initial mandatory defense since capturing the WBA belt on April 14, 2007 via a 12-round majority decision versus Valuev. His only title defense was a voluntary fight this past January in a 12-round decision against Matt Skelton. WBA champions are required to make a mandatory defense within a year of winning the belt and/or last mandatory defense. Chagaev is officially over the deadline and seeking further delays.

“We have to respect mandatory defenses and if Chagaev isn’t willing or able to fulfill his obligation as champion,” WBA No. 2 rated Ruiz said, “he should step aside so the WBA can move forward instead of standing still. There’s so much speculation about Chagaev. First there was Hepatitis B and now another viral infection – it must have moved from his intestines to his throat – and nobody really knows when or if he’ll be able to fight again. We will be filing a letter of petition with the WBA to strip Chagaev and order a fight between me and Valuev for the WBA title.”

Ruiz is also rated No. 3 by the WBC, No. 6 by the IBF, No. 10 by The Ring magazine, and No. 12 by the WBO.

“The heavyweight division drives boxing,” Ruiz added. “Fans are waiting for things to explode, but it seems like the heavyweight champions are holding the title belts hostage. They’re all tied up and don’t want to fight the best heavyweights. No wonder fans criticize heavyweights. I’m ready to clean-up the division and willing to fight any of the world champs or top contenders. How long do I have to wait for my title shot?”

Ruiz is the first and only Latino heavyweight champion of the world. He has fought in 10 world championship fights and defeated three world heavyweight champions -- Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – as well as top contenders such as Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Kirk Johnson and Jameel McCline during his 15-year pro career.

Vernon Forrest vs. Sergio Mora and Carlos Quintana vs. Paul Williams II; World Championship Doubleheader, June 7 at 9:00 pm on Showtime

Forrest will defend his WBC super welterweight title against Mora and Quintana will look to defend his newly acquired WBO welterweight belt against the boxer he dethroned, the previously unbeaten Williams. In his last start, Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs), of Atlanta, Ga., continued his rebirth atop the 154-pound division when he successfully defended the WBC belt against Michele Piccirillo with an 11th round TKO on SHOWTIME on Dec. 1, 2007. Forrest, a former three-time welterweight champion, won the vacant crown with a 12-round unanimous decision over Carlos Baldomir on July 28, 2007.

Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs), of Los Angeles, Calif., won The Contender television series on Oct. 15, 2005 with an entertaining and hard-fought split decision over Peter Manfredo, Jr. The fight with Forrest is exactly what Mora has been aiming for and should prove to be his toughest challenge to date.

The Quintana-Williams bout is a rematch of a WBO welterweight title fight that Quintana won in a shocking upset on Feb. 9, 2008. Williams, who came into the fight confident -- perhaps looking past Quintana, an 8-1 underdog -- lost a 12-round unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112 twice and 115-113.

Quintana, of Puerto Rico, is 25-1 with 19 knockouts. The only blemish on his record came in a hard-fought bout to Miguel Cotto for the WBA welterweight title on Dec. 2, 2006 on SHOWTIME.

Williams (33-1, 24 KOs), of Augusta, Ga, captured the belt with a close decision over Antonio Margarito, who had made seven successful defenses, on July 14, 2007.

JOEL JULIO TO HEADLINE APRIL 30 WEDNESDAY EDITION OF ESPN2 “FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS”; Columbian bomber to battle veteran Ishe Smith on way to title shot

TOTOWA, NJ– World ranked jr. middleweight contender Joel Julio returns to the ring on April 30, 2008, when he challenges veteran Ishe Smith in a 10 round bout from the River Rock Casino Resorts in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, it was announced today by Main Events CEO Kathy Duva. The bout will be broadcast live on a special Wednesday edition of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights,” beginning at 9:00 pm ET.

“I am very excited to fight again on ESPN,” said Julio. “It is very important to me to look good against Ishe because I want to fight for a world title next. Ishe is a good fighter who will bring out the best in me.”

"Sometimes life and circumstances bring the best out of us all!" said Smith.

Julio (31-1, 29 KO’s) is ranked #4 by the IBF and #6 by the WBA and WBC. The 23-year-old Monteria, Colombia native has stopped 21 opponents within the first three rounds. He has won his last four bouts, three by knockout. In 2005 Julio was named “Prospect of the Year” by several media outlets, including ESPN.com. In his last bout on May 16, 2007, Julio blasted Mauro Lucero in one round (KO 1).

Smith (19-2, 9 KO’s) has won four of his last five bouts. The 29-year-old Las Vegas, NV native captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Championship on January 15, 2004, when he decisioned Randall Bailey (W 12). That same year Smith participated in “The Contender” series and lost a split decision to eventual champion Sergio Mora on September 12, 2004 (L 5). In his last bout on February 8, 2008, Smith crushed Carlos De La Cruz in two rounds (TKO 2).

WBO 130 POUND CHAMPION JOAN GUZMAN OBTAINS VISA‏

SAN DIEGO, Calif.– World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) has obtained a visa that will allow him to travel to Scotland to defend his title against interim champion and Scotland-native Alex Arthur.


“This was the last hurdle that we needed to clear before we could make our title defense,” Guzman said. “Now we’re just waiting on the new date.”

The fight was scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, but due to Guzman’s visa issues, the fight will now have a new date.

“All we need now is for Frank Warren (promoter) of Sports Network to give us the new, rescheduled date,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the company that promotes Guzman. “Guzman cleared up his visa issues and is now ready to go to Scotland to successfully defend his WBO junior lightweight belt.”

Frank Warren won the rights to this championship fight in a WBO purse bid.

2-time world heavyweight champion John 'The Quietman' Ruiz, Ruiz rated high, still avoided "Team Ruiz"

LAS VEGAS– Former two-time world heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz used to be the Rodney Dangerfield of boxing as well as one of its most avoided fighters. Now, though, the new Ruiz has gained respect in many circles, particularly after his impressive win against 4-time world title challenger Jameel McCline, yet, John remains the opponent champions and top contenders alike least want to fight.

Top American contender Ruiz and European challenger Alexander Dimitrenko are the only heavyweights rated among the top six in the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation. Rated No. 2 and No. 3 by the WBA and WBC, respectively, and No. 6 by the IBF but, unlike Dimitrenko, Ruiz is also ranked in the top 10 by The Ring magazine.

Mijares-Munoz Super Flyweight Title Unification on PPV; Salado-Miranda co-feature May 17 in Mexico

GOMEZ PALACIO, DURANGO, Mexico– WBC champion Cristian Mijares and WBA title-holder Alexander “El Explosivio” Munoz will fight May 17 in the first super flyweight unification title bout in more than 10 years, headlining the “Noche de Campeons” pay-per-view event live from the Auditorio Centenario in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico.

“Noche de Campeones,” promoted by KO Entertainment in association with DiBella Entertainment, will be produced and distributed by Integrated Sports for live viewing in the United States (9 PM/ET) on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and DISH Network, as well as on The Fight Network in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

The 12-round co-feature pits Mexican warriors Omar Salado and Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda in a WBC flyweight elimination bout.

“A worldwide show like this has never happened in Mexican boxing history,” promoter Nacho Huizar said. “The main event is going to be a war. Mijares is a great fighter; a technician who is very dangerous, too. Munoz is a big puncher. It’s going to be a classic fight.”

Mijares (34-3-2, 14 KOs), who has been boxing professionally since 1997, captured the WBC Interim title on September 18, 2006 by 12-round split decision (114-113, 114-113, 113-114) against Katsushige Kawashima (30-4) in Japan. The crafty Mexican southpaw successfully defended his WBC Interim belt the following November in Mexico, winning a 12-round unanimous decision (118-109, 117-110, 116-111) versus Reynaldo Lopez (28-3-2), and won his rematch for the WBC outright championship on January 3, 2007, stopping Kawashima (30-5) in the 10th round.

Mijares burst upon the global scene a year ago with an impressive, one-sided victory by unanimous 12-round decision (119-109, 118-110, 117-11) on PPV against popular, colorful Jorge “Travieso” Arce (46-4-1, 35 KOs) in San Antonio. “I didn’t doubt that I’d beat Arce,” Cristian noted, “but I didn’t think it would be that easy. I’d like to unify the super flyweight titles and then look to the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions, maybe against Wladimir Sidorenko or Jhonny Gonzalez.”

Currently riding a 24-fight unbeaten streak with 23 wins and one draw, Mijares attributes his success to a combination of a winning attitude, preparation and maximum sacrifice. Now one of the most popular and exciting all-around boxers in the world, Mijares has made four successful title defenses since defeating Arce against, in order, Terrei Kikui (215) by 10th round TKO, Frank Gorrjux (16-7) in the opening round, and Jose Navarro (26-3) via a 12-round decision on February 16 in Las Vegas.

Venezuela-native Munoz (32-2, 27 KOs) is a 2-time WBA super flyweight champion, first winning the coveted belt in 2002 with an eighth-round stoppage of Celes Kobayasho. Munoz made three winning title defenses against Eiji Kojima twice (KO2 and TKO10), sandwiched around a 12-round decision versus Hidenobu Honda (26-2), before losing a 12-round decision and his title belt to Martin Castillo (26-1) in 2004. Munoz won the WBA Fedelatin super flyweight crown in a WBA title eliminator, but Castillo won their 2006 rematch by 12-round split decision.

Munoz regained his WBA super flyweight title on May 3, 2007, taking a dominating 12-round decision from Nabuo Mashiro (9-0) in Japan. In a pair of title defenses, “El Explosivo” retained hos belt with 12-round decisions against, respectively, Kuniyuki Aizawa (13-1-1) and Katsushige Kawasjima (32-6) this past January in Japan.

Unbeaten former WBA Fedelatin super fIyweight champion Salado (19-0-2, 11 KOs) fought a 12-round draw with Ulises Solis (22-1-1) for the IBF light flyweight title in 2006. Salado is rated No. 6 by the WBC and The Ring, as well as No. 11 by the WBA. Miranda (25-3-1, 18 KOs) is ranked No. 3 by the WBC.

Mexican middleweight champion Ruben “Cloroformo” Padilla (15-2-1, 14 KOs) is scheduled to fight in one of two other 10-round PPV bouts against an opponent to be determined.
