Calzaghe says boxing is dying with too few stars

Calzaghe says boxing is dying with too few stars
Associated Press Sports

LONDON- Joe Calzaghe believes boxing is on the ropes, with too many titles and champions and few real stars.

Still to decide whether to quit after beating Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. this year to take his unbeaten record to 46 fights, Calzaghe said Wednesday he was glad he was almost on the way out of the sport instead of just starting out.

"I think boxing is a dying sport. Globally - in America for instance - you've got UFC, which has taken a lot off boxing, business-wise,'' Calzaghe said, referring to the mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting Championship.

But the Welshman, who held the WBO super-middleweight world title for more than 10 years before moving up to light-heavyweight to fight Hopkins and Jones, said boxing also had its own internal problems.

"There is too much politics in boxing, too many belts and too many champions, which dilutes real champions like myself,'' he said. "There are four world champions in each division and it's bad because there are no stars any more. It's a big problem.''

Calzaghe also noted that the United States won only one medal at the Beijing Games - a bronze by heavyweight Deontay Wilder - which points to a grim future for American boxing.

"America only had one medalist in the Olympics this year,'' Calzaghe said. "In Britain, we did pretty good, but I'm glad I'm ending my career and not starting it because I don't think it's going to be that great in the future.''

De ULTIMATE COMMANDER, Tomasz Adamek and KC

Round One- Adamek being the more aggressive in the early rounds Cunningham comes back with punches of his own late in the round.

Round Two- Cunningham with a little taunting after little flurries from Adamek. Both throwing combos at one another. Adamek knocking down Cunningham in the late seconds of the round.

Round Four- Cunningham throwing flurries early in the round. Adamek coming back with another knockdown late in the round.

Round Five- Cunningham getting hit by combos throughout the round trying to come back with punches of his own.

Round Eight- Cunningham hitting Adamek with big shots. Adamek coming back with flurries landing on Cunningham. Adamek knocking Cunningham down again late in the round. Adamek throwing flurries at Cunningham until the end of the round.

Round Eleven- Early in the round Cunningham comes out aggressive landing powerful punches. Adamek coming back with counter punches.

Tomasz Adamek wins by decision

At the press conference, Cunningham went straight to it that he wants a rematch with Adamek. Cunningham thought he won all the rounds except the knockdown rounds. But in my eyes it seemed Cunningham was getting stunned the entire fight due to his lack of defense and going toe to toe with a much stronger opponent.

Mrs Cunningham (wife), Steve USS Cunningham and De ULTIMATE COMMANDER

Adamek won the fight but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a rematch due to the excitement in all rounds. Adamek said at the press conference that it didn’t matter who he fought next as long as the people were glad to watch it. But Adamek’s manager said it depends on the money.

Don King

I believe if Don King wants to promote another big fight it should be a Cunningham-Adamek 2 by putting a lot of money into the fight. If the fight happens it could be the fight of the summer.

KC and Steve USS Cunningham

Joseph Agbeko vs. William Gonzalez

First Round- Agbeko landed a crushing blow to Gonzalez early in the round stunning him. Gonzalez landed a low blow to Agbeko.

Second Round- Gonzalez and Agbeko throwing powerful punches but Gonzalez landing more with him winning the round.

Sixth Round- At the end of the round Gonzalez hits Agbeko with a low blow again.
Round Nine- Both Gonzalez and Agbeko landing power punches but Agbeko landing more with him winning the round.

Round Ten- Gonzalez landed powerful flurries late in the round
Joseph Agbeko wins by decision.

Henry Crawford vs. Maximo Cuevas

First Round- Crawford the more aggressive in the first nearly knocking down Cuevas. Crawford badly swelling Cuevas left eye.

Second Round- Crawford finishes Cuevas with flurries winning the fight by TKO

No Holds Barred: The Grappling Revival

No Holds Barred: The Grappling Revival

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-12-12T12_16_02-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses an important development in the combat sports: the revival and resurgence of numerous important events in various styles of grappling.

As has been reported on the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), not only are plans moving forward for the 2009 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championship, which will likely be held in late summer at a site to be determined, but there also has been an announcement that a new International Professional Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IPJJF) will start running events in 2009. The World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup will take place in April 2009, with trials in Brazil, the U.S., Canada, Japan, Europe, and Australia. More information on that will also be announced shortly.

In college wrestling in the U.S., a new all-time attendance record was set Saturday, December 6, when 15,955 fans jammed into Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City to see the top-ranked University of Iowa Hawkeyes defeat their intrastate rivals, the second-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, by a score of 20-15. That broke the old record of 15,646, set on Feb. 1, 2002, when Minnesota hosted Iowa at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

In the sport of sumo wrestling, a new professional company called the International Sumo League plans to run a tour of the U.S., starting Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, and culminating with a planned championship tournament in Madison Square Garden Saturday, November 7, 2009. Organized by some of the same people who ran the World Sumo League in 2005 and 2006, they are in talks with CBS Sports about televising their shows.

Taken together, it is clear that there is a grappling revival going on, and that is what we discuss on this edition of No Holds Barred.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by discussing how the one-sided beatdown administered by Manny Pacquiao on Oscar De La Hoya this past Saturday, December 6, was symptomatic of the continuing decline of American boxing. With this decisive win by the much smaller Pacquiao over De La Hoya, American boxing now has no real superstars. We next discuss a local New York card which resulted in several surprises. Of the 13 fights on Ring Promotions' "Holiday Hits" show held Thursday, December 4, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, there were four upsets, including in both of the featured bouts. Right after the fights concluded, we spoke with our colleague Keisha Morrisey to discuss this show. We also spoke with three of the victorious fighters: light heavyweight Will Rosinsky (3-0, 3 KOs), heavyweight Tor Hamer (2-0, 2 KOs), and veteran heavyweight Marcellus Brown (26-17-1, 22 KOs), who won his main event bout with Nagy Aguilera (10-1, 6 KOs) by disqualification. Margarito vs.Mosley Jan 24th 2008 in Los Angeles, CA

Boxing is back at The Staples Center in downtown LA on Saturday, January 24th 2009. The two combatants are the Mexican favorite Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KO’s) putting his WBA Welterweight title on the line against Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KO’s). Margarito is 30 and stands 5’11” and Mosley is 37 and goes 5’9”. The fight will be on HBO World Championship Boxing and starts at 7 pm PT. The press conference today brought out the brass from HBO, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions to name a few. While there were no official signs or flashy posters yet, the fight looks to be billed as “The Battle for LA” per Bob Arum. The tickets are priced between $50 and $300 and the promoters put out an offer that would allow any fan that buys $1000 worth of tickets to receive a glove autographed by both fighters. It’s a steep price tag for the souvenir but not a bad idea either way.

Mosley now has Nazim Richardson as his trainer and team Margarito is intact with Sergio Diaz and Frank Espinoza.

Mosley and Nazim Richardson

Both fighters took the obligatory turn at the mike and both looked confident and relaxed. Both camps promised that this would be an action fight with both teams predicting obviously.

We all know Margarito will bring pressure and Mosley will look to use speed and angles. The same issue that will haunt De La Hoya may rear its head for Mosley in this fight. Mosley did not look pound for pound good in his last contest with Mayorga and he is now fighting a non-stop pressure fighter who can also take you out. Many will say this is a bad fight for Mosley as his opponent can make you look awful if you are not perfect like Pacquiao showed De La Hoya. On the other side, Mosley has made a career of beating “bigger” men; F. Vargas, Mayorga, A. Diaz, Stone and he went 12 rounds with Miguel Cotto. Can Mosley out box Margarito while piling up points of his own or can he KO Margarito, Mosley says “He is going to end up getting knocked out because he’ll come right at me and I’ll catch him.” I favor Margarito based more on Mosley’s last outing and his age and a loss of reflex and speed. However, Mosley has never been knocked out and has been in with big punchers. Shane can hang in for 12 rounds and he can cause Marg. some problems but he has to have a great game plan and the will to stick with it. This fight is a litmus test for Mosley’s career. If he wins he is still a major player in the division and could look to rematch Cotto. A loss, especially a bad one, would probably mean another Golden Boy associate sticks to promoting 100% of the time. Crossroads fights are sure fun aren’t they?

Eddie Goldman and Mike Silver on Joey Reynolds

Eddie Goldman and Mike Silver on Joey Reynolds

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-12-10T04_42_09-08_00

Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred and SecondsOut Radio and boxing historian and author Mike Silver were guests on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, December 9/10. Eddie Goldman is also the boxing correspondent for the "Joey Reynolds Show".

Mike Silver has a new book out entitled "The Arc of Boxing: The Rise and Decline of the Sweet Science" (http://www.mcfarlandpub.com/).

Our discussion focused on the theme of this book. We talked about the many problems in boxing and how the sport has fallen from being one of the most popular and technical in the world to one in which mediocrity, at best, rules.

The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at midnight ET and runs to 5 AM ET. KENDALL HOLT WORKOUT QUOTES & PHOTOS Hackensack Police Athletic League Gym

SHOWTIME boxing analyst Steve Farhood caught up with Jr. Welterweight World Champion Kendall Holt at a light, private training session on Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Hackensack, N.J.

To catch the exclusive Showtime interview, please visit http://sports.sho.com. The interview will be available Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) defends his WBO 140-pound title against undefeated, world-ranked challenger Demetrius Hopkins (28-0-1, 11 KOs) in the main event of Saturday’s special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, (SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Before Holt’s interview with Farhood, the SHOWTIME cameras picked up this gem.

(On Torres and Hopkins)

HOLT: Ricardo Torres, pulling a stunt like this so close to the fight. They had to get Demetrius Hopkins, who I like, to fill in. He’s a good fighter who is technically sound. But, because of Ricardo Torres – and I want all the Demetrius Hopkins fans to blame Ricardo Torres – because now Hopkins has to face me and now his “0” must go.

I don’t want everybody to blame me and be mad at Christmas time because Demetrius Hopkins doesn’t have a goose egg anymore because he has his first loss.

Highlights From Interview with Farhood

(On Torres Pulling Out)

HOLT: I think he didn’t want to take the fight from the beginning. I think he was just going through the motions because he’s a boxer. When push came to shove, he realized that he really didn’t want this fight.

(On change in style from Torres to Hopkins)

HOLT: Hopkins is a talented fighter. He has speed, he’s rangy and he has long arms and good foot movement. A lot of mental toughness will come into play on Saturday. Emotionally, physically and mentally I was preparing for a different type of fight. Two months of preparing that way, (now) to a couple days to do a complete (180) is going to be mentally challenging.

(On facing Bradley to Unify the Jr. Welterweight titles in 2009)

HOLT: I’m definitely looking forward to the Bradley fight. I achieved one of my dreams of becoming World Champion. Now, my ultimate goal is to unify the titles. I’ve already signed on to fight (Bradley) so, I just have to get past Demetrius Hopkins and I am on my way to unifying the titles.

See you at the Fights and Thanks for your time.

International Boxing Federation world-championship doubleheader on Thursday at Prudential Center—the first title card in Newark in 60 years

NEWARK, N.J.—Boxers preparing for the International Boxing Federation world-championship doubleheader on Thursday at Prudential Center—the first title card in Newark in 60 years (VERSUS 8 p.m. ET/PT)—participated in a media workout today.

IBF cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-1, 11 KOs), from Philadelphia, said his Polish-born opponent Tomasz Adamek shouldn’t place too much emphasis on the fact he was able to defeat former undisputed cruiserweight world champion O’Neil “Supernova” Bell in April.

“Tomasz Adamek didn’t beat O’Neil Bell. O’Neil Bell quit. If Adamek has a false sense of hope because of that win, he needs to know there’s no quit in me. I haven’t put in all this work and become world champion to go out on my stool. The only way I go out without my belt is if they carry me out.”

“I still live in the hood in Philadelphia as a world champion. I’m still trying to get out of the hood. That’s motivation enough for me to win right there.”

Former World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion Adamek (35-1, 24 KOs) Adamek, who did not participate in the today’s media workout, was reached by phone.

“I prefer to spend the last few days of training alone,” Adamek said. “I’ll see Cunningham on Thursday night. I expect this match to go the same way as the Bell fight where nothing surprised me and I was able to dictate the pace of the fight.”

The co-feature pits IBF bantamweight champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko (25-1, 22 KOs), from Accra, Ghana, against his mandatory challenger, IBF No. 1-ranked William “Chirizo” Gonzalez (21-2, 19 KOs), from Managua, Nicaragua.

Joseph King Kong Agbeko

“I saw Agbeko defeat Luis Perez to become champion but I didn’t see anything special in him,” Gonzalez, making his first world-title appearance, said. “I don’t think he’s special. I am very confident. This match is very important to me and my future, but I’m trying to not think of that right now, only about Agbeko and his championship. I will defeat him and win his belt.

When told of the challenger’s boasts, Agbeko was undaunted.

“I’m glad Gonzalez is confident,” Agbeko said. “He will need his confidence to stay in the ring with me. I know he’s 21 and 2, but he’s never been in the ring with King Kong.”

Chambers is taking nothing for granted as he has had a tough training camp in Philadelphia.

“I treat every fight like it’s a world championship fight” said Chambers, just hours away from boarding a plane to California.

“Opportunity and success comes disguised as hard work and we worked very hard for this fight. Salif has been in with some of the best fighters in the world and has a good knockout record so he has to be respected.”

“A win here gets me right back to where I was before the Povetkin fight as I believe I should be in line to take on one of champions in the division. Everyone knows why David Haye ran away from me after we accepted terms for a fight with him.”

“I feel that I am the première fighter in the Heavyweight division at this point in time. I have a great team with my promoter’s Goossen-Tutor and Score America and trainer in Rob Murray Sr. We are ready to what we have to do to become The Heavyweight champion of the world.”

See you at the Fights and Thanks for your time.

Junior middleweight James Moore relishes the role of the underdog against NABF champion Yuri Foreman

James Moore,(L) and Paul Malignaggi

James Moore, 16-1 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, New York, relishes the role of the underdog in the waning days of his preparation to wrest the NABF title from Yuri Foreman, 26-0 (8 KOS), at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on December 13.

The 10 round bout will open the ShoBox: the New Generation broadcast headlined by WBO junior welterweight champion Kendall Holt defending his crown against Demetrius Hopkins. Top Rank is promoting the show.

Many boxing experts believe that the quick-handed and fleet-footed Foreman, who is rated in the top-ten by all of the major sanctioning bodies, will be much too elusive for the offensive-minded Moore.

“All of the experts picked Oscar De La Hoya to beat Manny Pacquiao, and we know what happened there,” said the 30-year-old Moore who recently returned from a month-long training camp at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, where Pacquiao prepared for De La Hoya.

“The experts have no way of measuring the desire that burns within me, especially for this fight. In essence, I’ve been training for this fight for my whole life. A victory will really shoot me up the ladder and make me a contender overnight.

“It’s funny,” added Moore, a veteran of 314 amateur fights and the former captain of the Irish national amateur team. “In boxing, you are only as good as your last fight or your next fight. I came to the United States to pursue a professional championship. The only way to a title is through Yuri Foreman. I understand that he has the same dreams and ambitions as I do, but I plan on walking out of the ring a winner on Saturday night. I’ve worked too hard and too long to expect or accept anything less.”

Several busloads of Moore’s fans are expected to make the trek to see the fight live. Tickets can be purchased in the New York area at Bar 43, 43-06 43rd Street, Sunnyside, NY 11104, phone 718-361-3090; the Fiddlers Pub, 52-75 65th Street, Maspeth, NY 11378; or through Moore’s adviser Barney Moore (no relation), phone 917-559-8467.

Tickets are also available at Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com, or by phone at 1-800-736-1420. They can also be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall box office, which is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Wladimir Klitschko vs Hasim Rahman

IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman faced off at today’s press conference in advance of their showdown on Saturday night at the S.A.P. Arena in Mannheim, Germany. Rahman stepped in to face Klitschko after mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin was forced to pull out with a training injury.

Wladimir Klitschko: “Hasim Rahman is a real challenger. For him it’s probably his last chance at the title. He has certainly not come to lose….I’m prepared to go twelve rounds, but a clear win means an early win. It can happen in any round. I will try to win the fight as clearly as I can.”
Emanuel Steward: “Wladimir has worked very intently. He knows what Rahman can do and takes him very seriously. We have big respect for Rahman, because he’s a dangerous opponent.”
Hasim Rahman: “I’ve learned from the past and I’m very well prepared. The area here is still Klitschko-land, but on Sunday morning this will be Rahman-land. I will win the fight early.”

PHILADELPHIA'S DEMETRIUS HOPKINS STEPS IN TO FACE KENDALL HOLT FOR WBO Jr. WELTER TITLE

NEW YORK– Undefeated junior welterweight challenger Demetrius Hopkins (28-0-1, 11 KOs) will step in to face WBO 140-pound champion Kendall Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) in the main event of Saturday's special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, (SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Holt was originally slated to face former 140-pound champ Ricardo Torres in a rubber-match, but Torres withdrew from the fight on Monday.

"Torres really wanted to fight but he was ill during camp, missed some training and was not in the condition he needed to be in for a war like this," said Bruce Trampler, chief matchmaker for Top Rank.

Now, Holt will have his hands full with the undefeated Hopkins, the nephew of former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins. The 28-year-old Hopkins is in peak condition as he was originally scheduled to fight Germaine Sanders on the undercard of Saturday's bout. When he learned Torres pulled out, he jumped at the opportunity to fight for his first world title.

According to manager Cameron Dunkin, Hopkins, upon accepting the fight, went immediately into an intense, all-day training session and was unavailable for comment.

Dunkin said, "Demetrius had been training hard for his fight with Germaine, and he has redoubled his efforts. He knows he needs to lose three more pounds but he will be on weight by Wednesday. He has completely devoted himself to being ready for this fight.

"This is a fight that he has wanted for a long time," the manager continued. "His first world title fight; we have wanted this for a long time. I am excited and proud that he will get the chance on Saturday. This is what we've been waiting for."

A top contender at 140-pounds, Hopkins holds key victories over Steve Forbes, Ernesto Zepeda and Jesse Feliciano. With Hopkins hailing from Philadelphia, and Holt from Paterson, N.J., it is essentially a home-game for both fighters.

Remaining tickets are on sale for the event, which is promoted by Top Rank, Inc., for Boardwalk Hall in. Tickets at $200, $100 and $50 are available on www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-736-1420, or at any Ticketmaster outlet nationwide.

Nick Charles will call the action from ringside with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst and Al Bernstein as ringside reporter. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing. ShoBox recently celebrated seven outstanding years on the air.
